FROM the PRESIDENT The legacy of artistic and academic excellence at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities is certainly one of the greatest examples of public education in the nation. Throughout our rich history, our students have embraced countless challenges and learning opportunities that they would have never imagined prior to their Governor’s School experience. Historically, it is evident that our students have met challenges head-on, and they have excelled in every way. Although fame and notoriety is extensive for many alumni and the accumulated accolades of other graduating classes are equally as impressive, none have experienced and overcome the challenges placed before them in the same manner as the Class of 2020. As we celebrate our 20th graduating class, we recognize that their experience has been exceptional in every way. Their commitment to excellence, their dedication to community, and their unwavering willingness to embrace change has been an incredible context for their future pursuits and for moving our school forward. Without question, the Class of 2020 has been tested to a level that may have seemed unfair or unlikely for the average student. They were handed a set of circumstances that no one could have imagined prior to March of this year, yet, in true Govie spirit, they persevered. They were nimble, quick, and accepting of life as it is while continuing to excel with a level of poise and dignity that is not simply a great characteristic of Govies, but a trait that is specific to the Class of 2020.
community and thrive with a level of understanding that they are indeed the leaders of the next generation. These pages support the many milestones that each has achieved on their way to becoming the visionary leaders that the world will need from this moment on. This class has proven that they possess the unique drive and vision for the future that only they can have. Never has this truth been more apparent than for our 20th graduating class. To the graduates, I extend my best wishes to you and a heartfelt congratulations! I know that your success beyond the Governor’s School will be as outstanding as your experience with us. May you continue along the path of greatness and continue to inspire others by your work, your commitment, and your love for your art and for humanity.
As noted within this document, we recognize the awards and achievements of our graduating seniors and honor the impressive journey that they’ve taken to this day. We also celebrate the passion that allowed 92 young artists to assemble in a unique learning

FROM the DEAN When students get their yearbooks, they’ll see a “Letter from the Dean.” It’s dated March 4, 2020, which seems like another era. Because it is. Back then I could encourage them to relish the feel of the yearbook: its heft, its slick pages, that new smell. I made a case for the book in their hands, over and against the online experience. I wanted them to care less about endless scrolling comments and care more about the permanence of the notes their friends would write on the blank pages in the back of the book. I swear to you that, even in 2020, someone would have written, “Stay sweet and have a great summer.” A lower-case "i" would have been dotted by a heart. And there it is again: the subjunctive mood. The hypothetical verb form: would, could. To be precise, it’s the subjunctive past: what would have been. This is the grammar of the grief we’ve been experiencing in waves this spring, the ache of “Tonight would have been prom, or Dreamville, or my senior recital.” You have your own items on a list of losses like these. We all know what this spring would and should have been like.
no less commendable, are their sheer grit, resilience, openness, authenticity, and kindness. We hated to lose the last nine weeks with them, but we’d be making a big mistake if we looked back at all their experiences and accomplishments with loss as our main focus. In fact, our 20th graduating class is the perfect embodiment of the vision of the founder of the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Virginia Uldrick. Even though they weren’t yet on the planet when she cut the ribbon in the parking lot, she knew they were coming. She had an unshakeable certainty that our state would produce their level of talent, even though not many people believed her at first. Our school’s mission has never been stronger than as exemplified by these 92 graduates. Congratulations on your many achievements, which include graduating with distinction in a defining moment in human history.
In the present tense, however, the subjunctive mood is also the language of the imagination. The most basic leap of empathy is subjunctive: “If I were you...” So are “I wish I were a princess” and “Do I dare to eat a peach?” Even the driest grammarian can’t help sound a little poetic when defining it: The subjunctive mood expresses an unreal situation. It expresses a possibility, a suggestion, a wish, a desire, something imaginary, or the way that you want something to be. The subjunctive mood is essentially an artistic vision: expressing something that doesn’t really exist. Yet. Among its many achievements, the Class of 2020 has built some incredible skills in this kind of work. They’ve also achieved in the ways that 20 years of Govies graduating ahead of them have done: winning competitions, making incredible work, tackling challenges, helping each other, teaching their teachers. Less tangible, but

CREATIVE WRITING
Small but mighty, our ten students who comprise the creative writing class of 2020 have proven their talents, not to mention diligence, time and again. Their accolades consist of numerous Scholastic awards earned on both National and Region-at-Large levels, including a Silver Portfolio of Distinction medal, which carries a $1000 purse. Our senior class carries both winner and runnerup in Kenyon Review's prestigious Patricia Grodd Poetry Contest, first place recipient of Hollins University's Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest, and plenty of students who have been acclaimed by literary journals nationwide. We are so very proud of them.

DANCE
The nine dancers in our 2020 class represent some of the best dancers in South Carolina. They have all successfully completed our inclusive, rigorous, systematic and progressive pre-professional dance training program providing them with a strong foundation for continuation into a professional career in dance. Over the years, they received many inspiring and challenging opportunities including the privilege of working with and being mentored by internationally recognized dance artists. This year’s dance students participated in the International Association of Blacks in Dance in Philadelphia. Our students received many accolades as they competed in the Semi-finals of the world’s largest international student ballet competition, the Youth America Grand Prix. Our dancers excelled themselves participating in the Regional and National High School Dance Festival. This year's Festival hosted 1500 high school dance students as well as over 60 recruiting dance organizations from across the United States, Canada, Spain and Australia. Only the best dancers and works are chosen for performance at the Gala Evening performances in front of the world’s leading dance program directors, teachers and choreographers and out of the 250 works submitted, our students were chosen to perform three of our works. Our senior class students finished this year having received over 55 acceptances from recognized university dance programs, trainee programs and summer intensives.

DRAMA
The Drama program is process driven, with achievement measured in the actors’ steady, delicate, and almost imperceptible growth as individuals and artists. We hope to cultivate a lasting artistic aesthetic woven with compassion, scholarship, and citizenship through our studio work, rehearsals, guest exposures, and productions. Our mission is to graduate enlightened artists who will live rich and creative lives. This past fall, seniors presented Talk to Me Like the Rain, consisting of six fully produced one-act plays by Tennessee Williams, directed by Drama Chair Dan Murray. In January, as part of our 20th Anniversary Production Season, actors performed our department's first-ever musical, The Robber Bridegroom, directed by Voice and Singing faculty Candace Dickinson.
Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Coastal Carolina University, Pace University, SUNY Purchase, Fordham, Syracuse, and more.
One of the ways to bridge the distance between high school and pre-professional experience is consistent exposure to working artists of the highest caliber. This year Drama students had the privilege to be taught by: • André De Shields (Artist Forum) - Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award-winning artist and star of Broadway's Hadestown • Robert Francesconi (Mask and Scene Study) - Assistant Dean of Drama Emeritus and Master Teacher of Mask at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts • Dale Girard (Stage Combat) - President of the North Carolina Stuntmans' Association and Fightmaster at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, whose credits include staging violence at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera
The Robber Bridegroom
• David Rambo (Playwriting and Script Analysis) - Credits include television’s CSI, Empire, Claws (TNT), and Tiny Pretty Things (Netflix) • Elizabeth Wiseman (Ensemble and Mask) - Theatre Artist and Master LeCoq teacher, New Mexico School of the Arts In February, Drama seniors journeyed to the Unified Theatre Auditions in Chicago to compete for coveted spots in the nation’s top conservatory and colleges. They were heavily recruited by premier programs, with scholarship offers from schools such as Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts, The University of Minnesota/Guthrie Actor-Training Program, Abril Castillo-Acosta and Victor Sherman in Talk to Me Like the Rain
Effie Ludke and Logan Martin in Twenty Seven Wagons Full of Cotton 11

MUSIC
The members of the Music Class of 2020 have made significant accomplishments during their time at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Some of these accomplishments include placing in regional and national competitions, performing with various ensembles including the Carolina Youth Symphony and the Greenville County Youth Orchestra, and performing for such luminaries as Joseph Young, Desdemona, Andrew Parker and Eric Willie. The department has hosted numerous guest artists who have worked with our students in master class settings. After graduation, our music seniors will attend prestigious schools in the United States to pursue majors in music as well as in other areas of study. This list demonstrates the many musical achievements of the Class of 2020. Boston Conservatory High School Composition Intensive at Berklee Brendan Yarem

VISUAL ARTS
This year, the Visual Arts Department participated in significant competitions, distinguishing our program regionally and nationally. These include the Scholastic Art Awards, a national competition with the highest level of participation from around the country, and regional student art exhibitions at South Carolina colleges and art institutions. The selections of our student works in these settings are a reflection of the high caliber of work being created across our studios. This year, all of our seniors produced largescale drawings for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and the Greenville Center for Creative Arts. The senior painting elective all exhibited paintings in West Pelzer at the Grand Gallery. All of these works were exhibited on and off campus to hundreds of people. Awards and exhibitions are important and gratifying, yet they do not fully show the resiliency, resourcefulness, and innovative mindset of our entire senior class. Congratulations to all awards winners, and great job to everyone.
