019 has been a fulfilling year for the SCGS Basketball Team. Both ‘C’ Division and ‘B’ Division teams successfully defended our championship titles in the National Schools’ North Zone Basketball Competition, with the ‘C’ Division defending the title for 10 consecutive years. We also achieved the ‘C’ Division First-runner up position in the National Basketball School Games Basketball Competitions while the ‘B’ Division

Team emerged back-to-back National Champions. Our success would not have been possible without our team culture of being one big family, acknowledging our need for an unbreakable work ethic, and giving our all during practices. Apart from inter-school competitions, a combined division team took part in the 3-on-3 Pesta Sukan games where all our three teams placed champions, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up in the U16 Girls Category. Our school team member Rachel Ang Rui Ci (4DG) was selected to represent the Singapore School Sports Team in the 11th ASEAN School Games. Sarah Goh (2GY) won the hustle award in the Jr NBA National Training Camp in Singapore. Maeva Loo (2DG) represented Singapore in Jakarta in June after being chosen as one of the Top 5 girls in the Jr NBA National Training Camp. We are extremely grateful for the opportunities provided to us to represent the school. We would also like to thank our teachers-in-charge, Mrs Dora Choo-Fernandez and Mr Yeo Guo Liang, as well as our coach Miss Chiew Poh Leng for their unending guidance and support. ver the years, SC Netball has been consistently growing, not just as individuals but as a team, through both hard work and our immense love for the sport itself. This year has been extremely fulfilling for us. With sheer commitment and tenacity, our ‘C’ Division team clinched 3rd runner up in the 2019 North Zone Inter-School Championships, allowing them to qualify for the North Zone Inter-School Championships. Our ‘B’ Division team also fought hard, making it to the Quarter-Finals. Besides the National Inter-School Championships, SC Netball ‘B’ Division also managed to attain 2nd runner up in the 2019 Pesta Sukan competition, making the school proud. As the SC Netball family, we have grown exponentially, adapting to the constantly changing training venues and limited resources. Furthermore, competitions such as Pesta Sukan, as well as friendlies with Saint Theresa’s Convent and Kuo Chuan Presbyterian, have allowed stronger bonds to be formed both within and between the teams. The 120th celebrations also served as a key platform for inter-batch bonding. These

experiences have instilled in us values such as teamwork, communication and determination. Our coach has always emphasised the importance of character building, reminding us that our goal is not just about winning every game. As a result, a large part of SC Netball is about the development of every girl, building and upholding the identity of an SC Netballer through fostering resilience, sportsmanship, and respect. A strong sense of teamwork also undergirds the SC Netball identity. The trust that has been formed through shared experiences is the foundation of our SC Netball family. Knowing that we can rely on each other spurs us on through every practice and every match, allowing us to strive for excellence with determination. The achievements of 2019 would not have been possible without the endless guidance and dedication of our coach, Mr Justin Teh, and the unwavering support of our teachers-in-charge, Ms Yeo Poh Tin and Mr Johari Khalil. We also extend our gratitude to the SC Netball Alumni for always wanting the best for us and never giving up on us. Finally, we thank the school for providing us with numerous opportunities that equipped us with life-long values, as well as for allowing us to be part of a team that we love. In SC Netball, We Dare. 019 was a rollercoaster ride for the SCGS Tennis team. We had many ups and downs but we never gave up. Instead we worked as a team to overcome them and learned many lessons along the way. The ‘B’ and ‘C’ divisions participated in the National School Games Tennis Championship. To achieve such commendable results, we worked really hard throughout this season and we are very proud of our teams.

019 marks the 8th year since the 84th Company was started in SCGS, and has proven to be an enriching and special year for us. The meaningful Annual Enrolment Service and Parade in April officially marked the welcoming of our Secondary 1 recruits into the company. At the service, they received their first badge, the Brigade Knowledge Badge, which was pinned onto their haversacks by their family members. This year’s Annual Camp was extremely exciting as it was held at the BB / GB Campsite for the first time, making it our first outdoor camp. Through activities such as kayaking, orienteering and outdoor cooking, we learnt to appreciate the great outdoors together and grew more united.

019 has been a fulfilling year for SCGS Girl Guides, packed with exciting events and beautiful memories. Firstly, we achieved the Puan Noor Aishah (PNA) Gold Award, the most prestigious award for a Girl Guides unit. This attests to the hard work and commitment of our Guides and the unwavering support of our teachers-incharge. During our annual March Camp (19 to 21 March) at Camp Christine, we honed outdoor skills through activities such as tent-pitching, fire-lighting and outdoor cooking. Through this, we learnt the importance of teamwork and perseverance. We also enjoyed a cozy campfire, during which the company experienced camaraderie and had fun singing traditional campfire songs and roasting marshmallows. On 5 April, we welcomed Girl Guides and Boy Scouts from other schools to our campfire event, themed Superheroes. The event was a huge success with all guests thoroughly

enjoying themselves. Hosting the campfire was a truly memorable experience for us! The North Division Day was a joyous occasion as our Telematch and Captain’s Ball teams managed to clinch 2nd place while the Make-a-Beverage team emerged Champion! Our preparation efforts also paid off at the North Division Outdoor Challenge when our Creative Gateway team won 3rd place while the Kitchen Dresser team clinched 2nd place. On National Day, a contingent of guides participated in the Observance Ceremony at Pek Kio Community Club, along with other Uniformed Groups. en newest members of the NCC platoon have made much progress in the year since they joined, representing SCGS in events such as the annual Affirmation Ceremony and Camp FORGE, during which they developed camaraderie with cadets from other schools and learnt new skills. By participating in competitions such as Sports and Games, the Road Relay and the Fitness Challenge, they cultivated a sense of teamwork and worked on their fitness levels. Through the year, they consistently pushed themselves to improve and developed values such as perseverance and adaptability. In 2019, the Part Bs participated in many different activities such as Camp STEEL, where they were introduced to different skills, such as the technical handling of the SAR21 rifle. They also attended Air Rifle trainings in preparation for their Individual Marksmanship Test. During Sports and Games Day, the Part Bs obtained second place in Frisbee. Through the competitions, they learnt the importance of sportsmanship and were able to improve on their teamwork.

154

Additionally, LCP Teresa Lim (Sec 2GY) and LCP Shayna Hsu (Sec 2CO) attended the Freestyle Drill Basic Instructor Course while LCP Vasu Durga (Sec 2SY) successfully completed the Physical Training Instructor Course. Overall, the Part Bs have had an enriching and fruitful year. 2019 served as a most significant year for the Part Cs who began their final phase to become the leaders of the Company. Through carefully planned trainings that encouraged them to discover their leadership styles, they successfully discovered their untapped potential. This was displayed in large scale events where each cadet was given significant roles to help her discover her leadership potential. We are proud to present the next batch of NCOs to guide the Company and uphold our NCC standards. It was also a thrilling year for the Part Ds. Besides the planning and execution of the Proficiency Camp and Annual Camp during their term, they also further developed their leadership skills through weekly trainings, and nurturing the cadets to become better leaders who will uphold

the standards of the Unit. In particular MSG Kylie Cheong (Sec 4DG) participated in the Advanced Drill Course which emphasised teamwork and discipline. The Part Ds also helped to organise a booth during the SCGS 120th Anniversary celebrations at Family Day, and contributed to the success of the event. Throughout their term as NCOs, the Part Ds successfully met their goals to impart leadership skills to the cadets and forge stronger bonds within the company. It was a productive year as we witnessed the incredible growth of many cadets as they overcame numerous obstacles with improved skill and cooperation while strengthening their discipline and platoon bonds. We owe much of this success to our teacher officers’ steadfast support and sound advice which helped to ensure the company’s development. We would like to make special mention of the welldeserved promotion of our Teacher officier, Ma’am Doreen Lee, to First Lieutenant. It has been an honor and a privilege to have been able to guide the company over the past year. Next, we began preparing for our combined trip to Brisbane with the String Ensemble. During our trip, we had the privilege of performing musical pieces such as Carioca and The Wizard of Oz at the famous theme-park, Dreamworld. We also had numerous exciting opportunities to improve in our music, such as engaging in a music exchange programme with Trinity Lutheran College and Clayfield College, and participating in an enriching masterclass at Griffith University. It was a truly unforgettable experience that stretched our horizons and marked our progressive journey as a band.

The eventful year ended off with our inschool concert, Cheers, that featured pieces from our Brisbane trip and a new repertoire which includes Overture No.1, Zenzenzense, from the movie Your Name and You’ve Got A Friend In Me, from the all-time favourite Toy Story series. This concert not only marked the Secondary One students’ first performance with the band, but also the Secondary Four students’ last performance and was a bittersweet experience for us. We were glad to conclude the year by looking forward to our upcoming concert at the Singapore Conference Hall in April 2020. We would like to express our gratitude to our Principal, Mrs Eugenia Lim, VicePrincipals, Mrs Shermaine Tang, Mdm Ho Hui Ping and Mrs Shirlene Tieh; and our Patron, Miss Yeo Li Yong. 019 not only marks the milestone of 120 years since the founding of our school, but also the 28th year of the SCGS Choir. Amidst hectic preparations for our special anniversary production, Being: Glad That I Live, we also started rehearsals for the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation as early as November 2018. We are proud to announce that we attained the Certificate of Distinction with our repertoire of choral pieces, consisting of the set piece What Is That I Hear by local musician Diana Soh, Filipino Folk Song Da Kami Ay Anan-ak, as well as the Latin piece, O Lux Beatissima. The preparation for the SYF was extremely exciting and engaging, especially due to the self-composed section of this year’s set piece. We took this opportunity to let our creativity run wild as we put

some tunes together, creating a soundscape that charted Singapore’s timeline since her founding. Our journey to SYF has been one full of love for music. With this passion we were able to overcome the countless challenges to keep on persevering towards achieving our goal. We are incredibly thankful to the school, our teachers-in-charge and choral conductor, Mrs Angela Goh, as well as our family and friends for their unwavering support and guidance during these times, and for allowing us to share these moments of joy with everyone. While the road to SYF 2019 was definitely an arduous one, it undoubtedly became an enriching experience none of us will ever forget. Choir Showcase 2019 Following the SYF, the SChoir embarked on a new project for 2019 – our annual choir showcase, this year entitled Bella Canto, meaning “beautiful song” in Italian. Our soiree was aimed at showing off the fun-loving side of the choir. Under a tighter time constraint, preparation was inevitably hasty. However, we managed to select a medley of songs from a myriad of genres ranging from classical to musical theatre and rock and roll. In addition, we showcased our SYF pieces, as well as items put together by the four levels. All in all, it was an extremely enriching experience to be able to perform for both parents and friends again, and sing our hearts out to songs that were very different from the typical choral pieces. he year started off excitingly with the SCGS 120th Anniversary concert, Being: Glad that I Live. The dancers from both the Primary and Secondary Divisions collaborated to put up an array of items, consisting of dance genres, Ballet, Hip Hop, Broadway and Chinese. In April, the Secondary Division dancers participated in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation. They put up two items, Lost and 春江花 月夜, with both attaining Distinctions in the International and Chinese Dance categories respectively. The dance group was also privileged to be given the opportunity to perform at Celebration In Dance, a concert organised by the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT), in conjunction with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), at the Esplanade Theatre. The dancers performed Winter, a ballet piece choreographed by Ms Vanessa Harijanto. It was truly an unforgettable experience to be able to share the stage with the dancers from SDT, many of whom inspired us. We also admired the performances of other dance academies. In celebration of SCGS’ 120 years of rich Peranakan heritage, our dancers performed a Peranakan ballet piece choreographed by Ms Vanessa Harijanto, entitled Marilah Kita Menari, on Peranakan Night on 14 September. The dance group was invited to the Wellness Carnival organised by the National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU) to perform this Peranakan item, along with the Charleston, choreographed by Ms Didi Lau, on 23 November. nglish Drama has enjoyed a remarkable year. We played an integral role in this year’s 120th anniversary production, Being: Glad that I Live, put up a VIA performance of the musical Cinderella, and were involved in the Singapore Youth Festival Celebrations in the Community - Play! Challenge as well as the Trinity Guildhall Performance Arts examinations. A combined showcase for the performing arts in SCGS, Being: Glad that I Live was a rare opportunity for Drama members to perform in front of a massive audience and to publicly display love for SC. It forged a deep sense of camaraderie as the cast learnt to rely on each other during the most strenuous rehearsals. Being: Glad that I Live truly pushed us beyond our limits and definitely inspired us to become better actresses. English Drama also experienced the joy of giving back to the community through our performance of Cinderella. This production took place in our amphitheatre and instilled a sense of selfreliance and adaptability as we learnt to manage without certain fundamentals used in our regular performances, for example, a backstage area. Not resting on our laurels, English Drama continued to participate in external competitions and platforms. The SYF Play! competition presented a creative challenge as the shortlisted Secondary 2 team had to fully express the story and its complex characters within the constraints of the competition guidelines. The year concluded on a high note with our Trinity Guildhall Performance Arts examinations. This year, members had

a lot more control over their performances, which engendered a deeper sense of belonging through mutual trust and reliance. English Drama has been privileged to have all these opportunities, each as meaningful as the last and we are truly grateful to the school. We would like to thank our teachers-in-charge, Mrs Caruna Yogeeswaran, Ms Vivienne Pang and Mr Paul Cheong, as well as our beloved instructor, Ms Keat, for their constant care and concern and for helping us grow, not only as actresses but as people. his year, Chinese Drama had the opportunity to perform in the school’s 120th anniversary production, Being: Glad That I Live, along with the other performing arts CCAs. Playing a part in this production was memorable and rewarding. Although there were ups and downs, this allowed us to gain greater exposure to theatre and trained our resilience. The CCA also represented the school in the bi-annual Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts presentation. On a lighter note, Chinese Drama visited the Esplanade in July to enjoy a world-class performance, Love Ya Mum! by Godot Theatre Company from Taiwan. Besides allowing our CCA members to pick up a plethora of acting skills, these performing opportunities and exposure to other theatre acts have allowed us to express ourselves more effectively. All these would not have been possible without the constant guidance and support from our instructor and teachersin-charge, Mdm Ng, Mdm Phua and Mdm Loo, who have worked hard to nurture the students into responsible leaders of good character. They have provided members of the CCA with opportunities to not only grow as a group, but also as individuals. his was an exciting and fruitful year for the Handbell Ensemble. In February, we participated in the school's 120th anniversary production, playing two musical pieces, Celtic Praise and Brazil. Through these two lively pieces of music in the celebratory scenes, the actors and musicians bonded together. We also contributed to the production's theme song with our distinctive sound. Our ensemble trained intensively for the London College of Music examination within a month and successfully achieved a Certificate of Distinction for Ensemble Level 5. In April, we participated in the Singapore's Youth Festival Arts Presentation for Instrumental Ensembles and performed a contrasting repertoire with flair and expression to achieve a Certificate of Distinction.

019 was definitely an action-packed year for the String Ensemble. We participated in many performances and events that excited and enriched us musically. These experiences have given us greater exposure to different musical genres and many opportunities to express ourselves musically. One of the most notable events was performing at the school’s 120th anniversary concert, Being: Glad that I Live. Together with the other

performing arts groups, we put together two large-scale concerts which were exceptionally well-received and earned glowing reviews from the audience at the MES Theatre at Mediacorp on 23 February. On 1 April, we participated in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation and performed Shushanik by Edward Mirzoyan and the first movement from the Italian Symphony by Felix Mendelssohn. Our efforts garnered us our second consecutive Distinction. In June, we embarked on a joint cultural exchange trip to Brisbane with the school band. We were honoured to be invited to perform at Australia’s biggest theme park, Dreamworld, and to play alongside the Queensland Youth Orchestra. We also visited schools and attended lessons to learn about life in Brisbane. The 7-day trip broadened our horizons and inculcated in us a deeper appreciation of classical music. Finally, in July, we performed at the Bicentennial Roadshow in conjunction with Singapore’s Bicentennial celebration. These rich opportunities built a strong sense of camaraderie among all our members and motivated us to constantly find new ways to improve. We would like to express our utmost gratitude to Mr Michael Chin, Mr Yip Wan Piu and Mrs Hazel Lim for their tireless support and encouragement. We would also like to thank our conductor, Mr Gevorg, for continually helping us reach our maximum potential, and for instilling in us a love for music and our instruments. 019 has definitely been a fulfilling and enjoyable year for the Art Club. We learnt many art forms from external trainers. A skilled watercolour artist taught us useful techniques to enhance our watercolour paintings and we certainly improved on our artistic abilities. This year, we participated in the City Development Limited Singapore Sculpture Award, exploring the use of sculptures to communicate meaningful messages. We were also able to use Adobe Spark to upload our art pieces, demonstrate the creative process, as well as convey the thought processes behind our work. At the Family Day Carnival, our members helped to manage a booth selling hair clips and balloons. We all arrived early in

the morning and had a lot of fun inflating the balloons. Our efforts paid off when we managed to sell off all our products and raise money for the President’s Challenge. We built a stronger camaraderie by helping with all the decorations that day, as well as conducting the Secondary 1 orientation programme and the Secondary 4 farewell event. These activities taught us the importance and meaning of teamwork. We would like to express our gratitude to our teachers-in-charge, Mr Abdul Razak and Mrs Cha, for their constant encouragement and support. Khalid (2CO), Valerie Sng Wan Lin (2PE), Wang Yifan (2SE), Verma Yashika (2SY) and Ng Kai Xuan, Andria (1PR). They acquired more knowledge about debate and honed their debating skills. Our Secondary 3 debaters served at the Wits & Words: Inter-school Debate Championship which was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education’s Gifted Education Branch, Debate Association (Singapore) and Raffles Institution. Irene Giakoumatos (3CO), Sim Ri-Ane Charlotte (3CO), Summer Fong Wai Yin (3DY), Miranda Chan Shao Min (3GY), Ho Wenn Mae Caithlin (3PE), Guillermo Caryl Kristine Co (3PR) and Sangireddy Samanvita Reddy (3SY) were trained to be adjudicators for this Primary school debating championship and gained important insight into adjudication and a fresh perspective on debating. In July, our CCA participated in a friendly spar with Catholic High School debaters. The entire club was involved in the joint training session and the experience allowed the students of both schools to share debating feedback and learning points. During the November holidays, the CCA was given the opportunity to visit the Parliament House for a tour and parliament sitting. Through this learning journey, we learnt more about the history of the Parliament House and the inner workings of the parliamentary system of government. In particular, we were able to clarify any questions we had in order to better understand Singapore’s judicial system. Irene Giakoumatos (Sec 3CO) Reflection: “I am really happy that I chose Debate as my CCA. I have learnt much and CCA has become something that I look forward to each week. Firstly, I value how the debaters support one another, lending a helping hand while creating a time of fun and laughter. I owe it all to the seniors who have been there for us every step of the way. Secondly, Debate has also taught us many skills that are important in life, such as teamwork, and how to prepare a speech or speak off the cuff before a crowd. For these reasons, I am very proud to be part of this wonderful club.” From the Secondary 1 Batch of 2019

019 has been an exciting year with many memories and lessons to remember. We are extremely grateful for all the effort put in by our teachers and fellow CCA members who have made this year so successful and enriching. Some highlights of this year are: the SCGS 120th Anniversary, Library Week, Health Month, Learning Journey to the National Library, Talk by author Miss Rosie Wee, the National Digital Storytelling Competition and VIA to Silver Circle. These were all carefully planned and aimed to cultivate our growth in many areas such as planning, social awareness and the heart to serve.

Reflections The Lim Boon Keng Library Society has participated in so many activities in 2019 that it was hard to keep track of them. It is hard to believe that one year has already passed. It feels like it was just yesterday when we invited the new batch of Secondary Ones into our CCA. 2019 has most definitely been a fruitful year, packed with numerous activities and events. Though overwhelming at times, our fellow members have certainly grown so much together and gained new experiences that we shall carry with us for years to come. Just as we cherish all the memories of 2019, we also look forward to what 2020 and the years after may bring. Jolin Yau (Sec 3SE)

before the elected prefects were introduced to the school in May. Subsequently, the newly-elected prefects attended the annual Girls-InBoleros Camp, a 2D1N camp that was a meaningful, enriching and emotional one as they bade farewell to the Secondary 4 prefects. They participated in several activities from beach cleaning at East Coast Park to the traditional Endurance Challenge. Though it was a short camp, they grew as leaders and took the time to reaffirm their purpose in serving others and they left the camp more motivated than before to do their best. The 69th Prefectorial Board was determined to uphold the high leadership and service standards set by their seniors. In July, the new board was officially inducted and pledged to ‘Light the Flame, Spark the Change’. In September, with the theme, Weaving a Tapestry of Memories, the prefects planned Teachers’ Day to express our sincere gratitude towards the teachers and nonteaching staff for all their hard work and dedication. This year’s Teacher’s Day celebrations included a class photo booth, a brunch for staff and a concert that ended with a hilarious Kahoot quiz. The teachers were presented gifts that were handmade by the prefects. To cheer on the student body during the examination period, we also created examination care packages. In collaboration with the Peer Leaders, 1000 such packages were packed and distributed to each and every student.
