hroughout this year, amidst a worldwide pandemic, the strength, adaptability and T teamwork of our badminton team was put to the test. We kick-started the year with a Bonding Camp to foster stronger team spirit. Despite the cancellation of the North Zone and National Badminton Championships, our team persevered and continued to train hard through various other means such as having eCCA sessions. Our training evolved to be one that included robust discussions on badminton matches online, and exploring alternative ways to build our physical fitness and skills. The team pushed past personal barriers in spite of the pandemic, a testament to our discipline and dedication. We would like to thank our teachers-in-charge for inspiring us to reach greater heights, our coaches for their tutelage, our parents and peers for their unwavering guidance and support. We are positive that the team will continue to work hard and strive to bring glory to the school. Venus Quanhao Yong (Sec 4CO) Tiong Weixuan, Erin (Sec 4DG)

020 has been a memorable year for the SCGS basketball team. The unprecedented time of COVID-19 rendered us not being able to participate in the National School Games, which was devastating as we had high hopes for our ‘C’ Division team in scoring an eleventh-year winning streak at the Zonal Championships and the ‘B’ Division team in defending their tenth! During lockdown, we had to stop our physical training sessions and move our training online (eCCA) with our basketball coach and teachers. Initially, we were uncertain about having online training due to the limited space we had at home as well as not being able to train with our teammates since basketball is a team sport after all. We remained positive and made the best of the situation. Under our coach’s watchful eye, we completed ball-handling drills and body strengthening exercises which we found suitable and beneficial to keep us fit and dexterous during the Home-Based Learning period. eCCA was a new experience but we truly missed the physical training and camaraderie felt on the basketball court. Since CCA re-started at the last quarter of 2020, we have also been preparing for the upcoming 2021 ‘B’ Division National School Games. As we had not been training together for a long period of time, we had to work twice as hard in order to strengthen the bond and chemistry among the team members as well as catch up on the training we had missed during the HBL period. We are indeed thankful to be able to train together again and to train in our new indoor sports hall. We are committed to training harder to face the challenges of 2021. We are especially grateful to our teachers-in-charge, Mrs Fu Shin Yee, Mr Amithjeet and Mrs Dora Choo-Fernandez and, as well as our coach, Miss Chiew Poh Leng for their indelible support, motivation and expertise. Competition in sight, we felt discouraged as we had been putting in many hours of preparation since July 2019. Despite this, we persevered and made the very best of our circumstances. In January and February of 2020, before the Circuit Breaker, we were able to carry out our Chinese New Year celebrations and a number of fun bonding sessions. Through the activities and our training sessions, we grew closer and became more bonded as a team. During the Circuit Breaker, we met using the platform of Google Meet for our training sessions and played online games together as part of bonding activities.

The team started the new year, conscientiously training towards a common goal—to clinch a trophy at the end of our zonal competitions journey. Even though we only managed to get through the first round, we had our fair share of competing against strong opponents and through our teamwork and resilience on court, we emerged top in the preliminary round for our respective group. Our coaches and teachers-incharge played an important role in giving us a strong pillar of moral support and pushed us even though times were tough. We are also very thankful to our fellow teammates as we helped and encouraged one another during the COVID-19 circuit breaker period. With COVID-19 Safe Management Measures, our training continued online over platforms like Zoom or Google Meet. We had workout routines to keep fit. Although it did help us get moving once in a while, it was very different from actual training because we did not have a court to play on, and some of us did not have our own netballs at home to practice with. Moreover, netball is a team sport where we need our teammates to train together with. However, as much as home-based training was incomparable to training on the court, everyone was cooperative and did the workout routines together over the video call. Other than training, the team captain and vicecaptains also organised bonding activities among levels as most of us did not get to see each other during this time, or get to even talk to the new juniors who just joined the CCA this year. Hence, by organising these little bonding activities over video calls, we were able to bond and interact with people we seldom or had not talked to before and it enabled the team to form closer bonds with one another. 2020 has really taught us resilience and cooperation. Whatever the circumstances, we should always do our best to make the most out of it. With everyone’s eager efforts to continue CCA online, the process of making it happen took very little planning. Everyone’s keen participation really showed the unity of the Netball team. Subbnha Kalidasan (Sec 4DG) Shayndel Khoo (Sec 4GY)

National School Games were cancelled and we also were not able to train at our external venues. However, we adapted and made the best of the situation by training in school and using the walls in the bus bay to practise our basic strokes. We had a few months of online CCA sessions where we made good use of the Zoom sessions. Our coach not only led us through the paces of physical fitness training but also used the sessions to teach us about stroke execution as well as the finer points of umpiring. We were glad to be able to train again after the year-end examinations and are grateful to our teachers-in-charge, Ms June Yap and Mrs Linda Lee, as well as our coach Ms Vicki He for their constant support and guidance which helped us be tenacious and grow in our resilience. Management Measures (SMM). We had to adjust our trainings such that we could only play within the levels and limit the number of people on the court to five, leading to the lack of interaction and bonding between different levels. Despite this, we improvised, and started to conduct CCA training over zoom, to ensure that we maintained our fitness level while giving us the opportunity to clarify any doubts about the sport. In the face of adversity, we continued to grow exponentially and worked within the given circumstances, developing a sense of camaraderie and team spirit. Before the spike in the COVID-19 cases, the ‘B’ Division team participated in the National School Games (NSG) in late January. With tenacity and determination, we managed to advance to the Semi-finals before the games were called off. The ‘C’ Division, however, was deprived of the opportunity to showcase their skills and represent the school in the National School Games (NSG). They continued to dedicate time and effort in training to further their abilities. On behalf of the CCA, we would like to extend our appreciation to our teachers-in-charge, Ms Maryanty Mohtar and Mr Ang Tee Koon, and our coaches, Coach Jensen and Coach Arlou for providing us with their constant guidance and support and pushing us to achieve greater heights. 020 has been a challenging year for the 84th Company. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to participate in the Drill Competition and have our Annual Camp and Enrolment Service which was especially important for the recruits. We missed many sessions and were behind on our drill training and badgework completion. However, we adapted and brought our CCA sessions online, where we continued with badgework and played games, like ‘skribbl.io’. When we could host face-to-face sessions again, we organised bonding sessions where we played charades and a seeking game to find post-its in squads, making GB more united. Thankfully, we could have our Sec 4 farewell. At the end of the year, we held a smaller Enrolment Service for the recruits. We would like to congratulate Yap Kah Him (Sec 4PE) and Sim Hui En, Renee Nicole (Sec 4DG) for attaining the Pioneer Brigader Brooch, the highest award. We are also proud that we could attain the Gold Company Award for the ninth consecutive year for 2019, with support from our officers. We also had the opportunity to give back to the community by delivering the Chinese New Year hampers that were thoughtfully packed by each class to the underprivileged residents in Pek Kio. We also embarked on a new initiative, Project Octo, which aimed to raise awareness for premature babies, by advocating for their cause. The Guides learnt to crochet stuffed octopi for the premature babies at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Ward of KK Women's and Children's Hospital to give them a sense of comfort. Lastly, we were still able to pick up useful outdoor skills such as fire-lighting, tentpitching, gadgets and axemanship, not only enhancing our preparedness, but also forging stronger bonds within our unit! Project Octo Project Octo is a Girl Guides initiative aimed to raise awareness for premature babies through the crocheting of octopi. This project originated in Denmark in 2013, and since then, has garnered the support of individuals who have made 29,000 for preemies in hospitals across Denmark. The initiative has also spread to 38 countries. As the tentacles of the octopus resemble an umbilical cord, which connects the mother and child, it may give the child a sense of comfort and hence bring comfort to the mother and preemie. Erica Low, Secondary 3GR

“One of the key highlights of my guiding journey would be bringing Project Octo to SC. Not only did I enjoy learning a new craft, but I also extremely excited and proud to be able to reach out to the community and help others through this project. I love advocacy and raising awareness, and Project Octo was the perfect platform to me to do so. It has allowed me to better understand the many complications surrounding pregnancy and prematurity, as well as grow as a leader and a Guide.” Michelle Yap Mae Lyn (Sec 4PE), Head of Project Octo 2020

Part As The nine new members of the NCC platoon have made much progress in the year since they joined, representing SCGS in events such as Camp FORGE, during which they developed camaraderie as well as learnt new skills. While they may not have had many opportunities this year, they have consistently pushed themselves to improve throughout the many training sessions held in school, developing values such as perseverance and adaptability along the way and have successfully integrated themselves into the company. Part Bs The Part Bs participated in many different activities such as Camp STEEL, where they stepped out of their comfort zones and were introduced to different skills, such as technical handling of the SAR21 rifle. With the introduction of the new Part As, the Part Bs had their first taste of being seniors within the Unit where they had to learn to guide their juniors through school-based training sessions, Annual Camp as well as Revision Camp. Overall, the Part Bs have had an enriching and fruitful year and showed much improvement in their teamwork and discipline. Part Cs This year, the Part Cs began their final phase in their journey to become the leaders of the Company. Through carefully planned training sessions that sought to encourage them to discover their leadership styles as well as through their hard work, the Part Cs have been able to unlock their potential. As proof of their ability to lead and discipline, all the Part Cs have passed their Specialist Assessment. The second half of 2020 marked the start of their term as the leaders of the company. They had to adapt to the new changes brought upon by the pandemic but with quick thinking and flexibility, the Part Cs started organising online trainings via ZOOM where they held eCCA activities such as orienteering theory and physical training. They showed grit as well as tenacity in adapting to this situation and we trust in their ability to uphold the standards of the company. Part Ds It has been an interesting year for the Part Ds as they led the unit. Although they started the year with great ambition and strong planning, most of these proposals fell through. However, they showed great tenacity and adaptability in pushing through with plans that were feasible at the time. Through their organisation of Annual Camp and Proficiency Camp, the Part Ds were able to further develop their leadership skills. As the leaders of the company, the Part Ds worked hard to fulfil their goal of developing disciplined and resilient cadets who displayed the core values of NCC. It has been our privilege to lead the members from oblivious cadets to confident leaders and witness the incredible growth of the cadets as they overcame numerous obstacles together. This would not have been possible without the immense support and sound advice from our teacher officers who gave direction and insight to ensure the company’s development. With discipline and determination, we have no doubt that SCNCC will soar to greater heights.

T

he SCGS Band started off 2020 with a band exchange with Nanyang Girls’ High School where we were greeted with a warm welcome. After performing separately, we had a joint performance, and both schools also shared about our different cultures to get to know each other better. We performed Overture No. 1 and the light-hearted You’ve Got A Friend In Me from the Disney classic, Toy Story. The exchange gave us a peek into how other school bands conducted their practices and allowed us to make new friends while exchanging new ideas about music. Our next performance was during the school’s annual Chinese New Year celebration where we embraced and ushered in the festive mood with Shi Lian Zhen Xian Lian Meng (失恋阵线联盟) by Grasshopper, a Cantopop group from Hong Kong. This song is a rendition of the original Koo Gud which was sung by Thai singer, Thongchai McIntyre. Soon after, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic escalated and we were suddenly hit with the impact of the global pandemic. Our annual concert that was scheduled for April was cancelled and all practices came to a halt. Without the ability to practise and the chance to perform, the spirit of the band was dampened and we were left feeling hopeless. However, we did not let this get in the way of our musical journey. As schools started Home-Based Learning (HBL), we had to bring our instruments home. Although we were unable to practise together as a band, we persisted from the comforts of our own homes in finding new ways to practise to the best of our abilities. We started off slowly with weekly assignments in which every member had to submit video recordings of themselves. With new technical exercises every week, we made sure we did not lose our spirit as a band. Two months into this routine, things changed with the commencement of eCCA. Identical to how school lessons were conducted, the band met together once a week where we logged onto the online video-communication platform Google Meet, which were hosted by our teachers-in-charge. One of the biggest problems with practising online was managing the sound quality which was compromised by everybody's sporadic internet connection speeds. It was not the most ideal arrangement but we worked with what we had. This also gave us the chance to meet all together as a band once a week. Fast-forward to where we are now, we feel that the band has truly gained so much out of eCCA and it has enriched our journey as a band so far. Not only did we improve on our skills and fundamentals as players, we also became more cohesive. All of us helped each other out during these tough times and we were able to overcome obstacles together. Admittedly, these times were not easy but we emerged together

Throughout this rocky year, we would like to sincerely thank our Principal, Mrs Eugenia Lim, and our Vice-Principals, Mrs Shermaine Tang, Mdm Ho Hui Ping and Mrs Shirlene Tieh, for continuously supporting SCGS Band in our passions. We would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to our Patron, Miss Yeo Li Yong and our Teachers-in-Charge, Mr Liang Kok Ann, Mdm Joyce Goh and Ms Clara Chow, for being the strong pillars of support for the band. Last but not least, we would like to extend our gratitude towards our conductor, Mr Marvin Khoo, for his guidance and dedication with the best interest of the band in mind at all times. and fear, who relied on music as a tool for hope and healing. Despite our efforts to find safer ways of staging the show, it was ultimately cancelled. However, this did not break the choir’s spirit. During the circuit breaker, we recorded audio clips of ourselves singing Voices – a self-composed piece from our musical. Following a metronome and midi track while recording individually was certainly a peculiar mode of choral singing. After putting our videos and audios together, we created a virtual choral performance. In 2020, we were in a position much like the choir in Aria. Surrounded by anxiety, music became a balm for our fearful hearts. Indeed, Life has imitated Art! When we resumed physical choir sessions following safe distancing measures, the choir found alternative ways to conduct fulfilling practices without singing by writing songs and doing physical exercises. Notwithstanding the circumstances, we were able to adapt and learn from our challenges. We could not have done this without the wonderful support of our teachers, Mrs Vivian Tan, Ms Beh Mui Leng, and Mrs Angela Goh. Secondary and Primary Divisions respectively. In February, the Secondary Division reprised the performance of 春江 (chun jiang) for the Esplanade’s HuaYi (华艺节), Chinese Festival of Arts, which was held at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. It was truly a memorable experience performing with dancers from three other schools, whereby each school portrayed the theme of “dancing maidens” through their own performances. In the Primary Division, the dancers were busy preparing and rehearsing two items, 飞翔 (Feixiang) and Bring on the Cards!, for the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2020 (Primary). Unexpectedly, schools were closed abruptly as Singapore entered a period of the COVID-19 lockdown. Face-to-face lessons were no longer allowed. We had no choice but to conduct our CCA practices online. While this greatly inconvenienced both the dancers and instructors, the new arrangement allowed us to further strengthen our foundation and grasp of the various dance techniques. Using online platforms, our instructors were able to monitor each student more closely, and although we were unable to learn new choreographies, more technique-focused lessons were held. In July, as circuit breaker measures began to relax, the Secondary Division dancers were finally allowed to conduct physical CCA lessons. They started CCA sessions in groups, eventually coming together as a whole CCA by the end of October. The Primary Division dancers started physical CCA lessons in October, all the while strictly following the stringent safe management measures. After the end-of-year examinations, we had the privilege of being filmed by MediaCorp to commemorate Mrs Jean Chan’s 50th year of contribution in SCGS. We performed Marilah Kita Menari, choreographed by Ms Vanessa Harijanto, on 29 October. The cancellation of our much anticipated annual dance concert and other external performances brought much disappointment. Nevertheless, we are still grateful for the few precious performances and opportunities given to us. We wish to express our immense gratitude to our instructors and teachers for their unwavering guidance, support and patience throughout the year. Here’s to an exciting and safe 2021!

ENGLISH WING 020 has been filled with ups and downs for English Drama – from starting off the year successfully with our orientation performance to the cancellation of our annual concert due to COVID-19. However, we managed to pull through as a CCA and enjoyed quality time together, both physically and virtually.

2

We kicked off the year with our Secondary 1 Orientation showcase, performing the musical number, “This is Me” from the movie musical, The Greatest Showman. We then underwent vocal and physical training to perform songs from the Broadway musicals, Dear Evan Hansen, Rent, and Mean Girls. Unfortunately, plans for our annual concert were mothballed in view of Singapore’s circuit breaker. Nevertheless, preparing for the concert broadened our horizons on drama and acting. In-person rehearsals allowed us to break the ice with the newcomers and made us united as one family, forming mutual respect for one another through the tireless hours spent practising. Despite the constraints of the pandemic, we kept connected via eCCA sessions over Zoom. During this period, we took on the artistic project of creating audiobooks based on Singapore culture. We had to dig deep into our creativity as we were not able to use our facial expressions as we normally would. The lack of proper recording studios and not being together in person were also challenges that we worked hard to overcome. Though separated physically, the teamwork involved kindled a profound sense of belonging and trust within the drama family. The experience made us all the more thankful when we eventually resumed CCA sessions in school, where we even ran through a mini-musical on Lim Boon Keng. We are privileged and thankful to have the support of our school and teachers-incharge, Ms Vivienne Pang and Mr Paul Cheong. We would also like to express our gratitude to our dearest instructors, Ms Keat, Ms Natalie and Ms Rui Shan for helping all of us in English Drama to blossom. Although the pandemic had restricted many live performances, we were given a profusion of opportunities to develop our theatre skills during these times. Examples included facial expression exercises and backstage training such as creating our props from scratch, in preparation for our future performances. These helped to build confidence and teamwork among members. We would like to express our gratitude to our instructor, Ms Cathrine Zhou and teachers-in-charge, Mdm Phua Chia Ghee and Ms Lee Li Qun, for their constant guidance and support. All of our successes would not have been possible without their dedication and hard work in nurturing the students into diligent learners.

extremely hard for it. To our dismay, our SCHB concert had to be cancelled due to the pandemic situation. We gathered our spirits and continued training even though we knew that most of the events were to be cancelled. To adapt to the new normal, we have shifted our physical ringing sessions to virtual CCA sessions during the Circuit Breaker period. Together with our conductor, Mr Damien Lim, our ensemble worked on our rhythm so as to strengthen our basics as ringers. During Home-Based Learning (HBL), our ensemble learnt a new instrument, the Cajon. Moreover, we attended a fruitful conducting course held online which gave us greater insights on how to work closely with the conductors in future performances. Last but not least, SCHB held our very first virtual farewell session over zoom, where we expressed our gratitude and well-wishes to the graduating Secondary 4 batch. The dedication and commitment displayed by every member of the ensemble was key in pursuing and continuing our love for the Arts, music and performing even at times of crisis. The friendship we made in the CCA and the support within the family made this journey an even more memorable one. With the unwavering support of the school, teachers, coaches, friends and families, the SCGS Handbell Ensemble has grown stronger and more united as one. After encountering and overcoming the difficulties, we have grown to be more adaptable, resolute, and unswerving to the unexpected. These obstacles have allowed us to be stronger individuals who can withstand even greater difficulties. We will continue to hone our ringing skills in the future and put in our very best to strive to do even better next year for our Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). We look forward to a more exciting and eventful 2021. To sum up, SCHB is a family. One for all, all for one. Without SCHB, life would be flat! Hsu Tzu Ching Sunny (Sec 3SY)

020 was definitely a unique yet challenging year for SC Strings to look back on. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CCA was suspended from April to June. Many of our activities such as recording for a Spotify album at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, exchange programmes with other schools and our annual school-based concert were cancelled. This came as a huge disappointment for many of us as we were all looking forward to these plans. However, despite this time of adversity, our CCA unexpectedly forged strong bonds throughout the year.

We started conducting eCCA in June via Zoom. This platform kept everyone on track with their learning. As we could not play as an ensemble over Zoom, we worked instead on musicianship and sectionals. The learning experiences we had over cyberspace during this period were refreshing. Our aural and theory skills also improved and all members were very cooperative in helping and motivating one another during these unprecedented times. In July, we were finally allowed to have face-to-face practice sessions, where only half the CCA could be in attendance each time, hence we practised as two chamber orchestras. Practice as a full ensemble was finally permitted in late October. We would like to thank our teachers in-charge, Mr Michael Chin and Ms Deborah Gan for organising practice sessions for us, and for their constant support and guidance. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation for our conductor, Mr Gevorg, for always trying his best to find opportunities for us to unleash our maximum potential, as well as inculcating our passion for music. We look forward to a more enriching 2021, and more opportunities to perform and share our love for music! Soh Ann Ru, Andria (Sec 3SE)

020, despite its many challenges, was an interesting and enjoyable year for the Art Club.

The largest project we worked on this year was the mural outside the art room, which we filled with our favourite cartoon characters and a few original drawings. Painting the mural allowed us to practise our brushwork, and it was a first for many members who had not previously worked on such a large artwork. Aside from being enjoyable to work on, we hope that our mural will bring smiles to our peers and teachers whenever they walk past it, brightening up the school’s atmosphere even more. We had the opportunity to attend a ceramics course, where our instructor taught us a few pottery basics, including coiling, pinching, and slab-work. During the course, we had an enjoyable time coming up with our own unique creations that we could take home as a keepsake. This again was a first for many members, and as such it was an exciting experience for us all. Our CCA took part in the Extravaganza Illustration Showcase, through which we exercised our imagination to come up with artworks fitting to the given theme. Since we were allowed to choose any medium to work with, we were able to hone our skills in our favourite art media as well. We also had the opportunity to enter the SYF Design Challenge, where we expressed our love for the arts through drawings using our medium of choice. Both competitions challenged us to come up with ideas, and to choose the right compositions and media for our artworks. Overall, they were very fulfilling and enriching. The Art Club also had many bonding opportunities during the year, despite the obstacle of the pandemic. At the start of the year, we had our Secondary 1 Orientation Programme, where we bonded over games and activities. While we were on lockdown, we met over Zoom to catch up, as well as to discuss CCA matters. Even though we were not able to meet in person, we remained in touch and united as a CCA. Finally, we would like to thank our teachers-in-charge, Mr Abdul Razak and Ms Low Kok Lang, for always supporting and reaching out to us with guidance and care, as well as providing us with opportunities to hone our artistic skills. 2020 was a fruitful year for our CCA, and we look forward to many more learning opportunities in the coming year! 020 was a trying yet fulfilling year for SC Debate Society, with our members challenging their limits throughout the year. Through the efforts of our teachers, coach and EXCO members, it was possible for us to attend various competitions and training sessions, albeit online, in the midst of the regulations put in place because of the pandemic. Competiting this year was a vastly different experience for us, as we had to adapt and participate in the Debate Association Debating Championship (DADC), Youth Debate Open and Oldham Cup via video conferencing platforms. All our participants had an enriching time in these formal inter-school debate competitions. SCGS came in fourth overall in DADC, and several of our speakers were named “Best Speaker” in the various rounds of the competitions.

SC Debate is a family in which our debaters, coming from different walks of life, are each able to bring an illuminated opinion to the table, striving to think out of the box. It is a safe space for everyone to grow and develop and we are very proud of all the competition teams for having excelled in such extraordinary circumstances. We hope to push the limits in 2021 and endeavour to make further improvement. Inez Chen Xin (Sec 2PR) Natalie Yiki Toh (Sec 2SE) Verma Yashika (Sec 3SY)

020 has been an unprecedented yet memorable year for our CCA. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we have faced many challenges that resulted in us not being able to hold physical CCA sessions, and one of the library’s key events, Library Week, had to be cancelled. Nevertheless, we learnt to adapt to new circumstances and to overcome these obstacles together. We carried out Health Month successfully while complying with Safe Management Measures. For example, instead of having our Health Month quiz in the library, hardcopy versions were made to reduce contact between students. Due to us not being able to have physical contact with one another, our CCA started to conduct sessions virtually, via online platforms like Zoom. This allowed us to have our VIA virtually by collaborating with Stamford Primary School to have storytelling sessions with young students there. These would not have been possible without the hard work put in by our fellow CCA members and the utmost support of our teachers. We hope that the year has inculcated in our CCA members values and lessons that would stay with them for years to come. Cheong Kai Xin (Sec 3PE) Natalie Teng Yi Ting (Sec 2SY)

Although disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, our usual training resumed after the Circuit Breaker Phase 2. Students learnt photography skills, animation skills and scratch online. Meanwhile, they also prepared for various competitions such as First Lego League, 'Our Schools, Our Stories' MOE Photography Competition and N.E.mation! 2021 Competition. One highlight of the year is the involvement of our photography members in the making of this year’s e-Open House videos. They learnt how to shoot and edit videos under professional guidance. This broadened their learning experience and ignited their passion for technology.

020 was an unprecedented year, with the global pandemic putting a damper on the activities we had always done, as well as those we had planned to do. Despite this, we still had the opportunity to attend online talks and invited speakers from organisations such as Nature Society Singapore (NSS) and Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) to tell us more about their field of work. We also encountered a new format of competitions, where everything was digital and we did not have face-to-face interactions with judges and peers from other schools. We are grateful to still have received awards in the Elementz Competition, Unity Scientific Innovation Challenge, and the first Singapore Energy Grand Challenge, among others. he theme of the 69th Prefectorial Board was “Light the Flame; Spark the Change”, a theme that has been highly applicable to the many twists and turns that the 69th Board was faced with throughout our year long term. With this theme, we hope to have courage to step out of our comfort zones, and to be proactive in standing up for what we believe in.

T

The new school year started off with much fun and excitement as the Orientation Committee organised orientation for the Secondary 1 students and some Secondary 2 and 3 students who were new to the school. The theme of the orientation was “Constellations”, as the new SC girls would enter the school as individual stars, and by the end of the orientation, they would connect and bond with one another to form beautiful constellations. The Prefectorial Board and the Peer Leaders collaborated to warmly welcome these new students to the SC family. However, the year 2020 would prove to be a turbulent one full of change and new challenges. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we needed to have courage in responding and adapting to the challenges that were thrown at us. As new Safe Management Measures were put in place, the prefects ensured that proper safe distancing was practiced, and we supported the school management and teachers in enforcing the new measures. Before schools closed and the Circuit Breaker began, the Prefectorial Board Special Projects Committee led a socially distanced cheer session in line with the #SGUnited and Clap for our Frontline Workers Initiative. Students donned their SC So Cool TShirts and displayed class unity with matching bandanas, pom-poms, and other props as they recited a cheer written by the Special Projects Committee. By staying united as a school, our morale was raised as we were reminded that even in a time of struggle, none of us are in it alone, and that there are always people by our side who support and care for us. When we returned to school after the Circuit Breaker period, the prefects played upbeat music in the morning before school began to lift everyone’s spirits. We created videos to welcome everyone back and update them on some activities that we had

125

been engaging in during the Circuit Breaker period. We were all excited to be back, and the prefects played an important role in helping our peers adjust to the new normal. The Fabulous Friday Initiative carried on in 2020, and we continued to recognise students who have displayed commendable qualities through their actions with a Fabunote presented to them in class. The school management and deans were also presented with Fabunotes for their hard work in dealing with the numerous updates from the Ministry of Education on the COVID-19 situation. The Prefectorial Board Elections were fortunately able to take place, though in a different format. Campaign speeches were pre-recorded and screened to students in their classes instead of being given live, and voting took place in class over a few days, as different levels were in school on different days. These changes made the campaign more complicated logistically, but the prefects remained flexible and coped well with the new adjustments. The Girls-In-Boleros Camp, an overnight camp during which the prefects are trained and given time to bond with one another, was unfortunately unable to take place this year. However, we were still able to have a small-scale session, where prefects could interact and bond in groups of 5, giving the newly-elected prefects an opportunity to form relationships within the board. Prefects were trained over Zoom calls to ensure that they remained wellequipped to carry out their duties effectively. The Welfare Committee continued with the annual Student Feedback Session, but they refined how it was carried out. Instead of having students come up to a booth during recess to give their feedback, the feedback sessions were held in classes during the morning assembly, and students got into small groups to discuss, collate and write down their feedback. Much more feedback was thus collected, and as the students were given time to think and discuss, their feedback was much more constructive.

The Prefects’ Installation, organised by the Secondary 3 prefects, was pre-recorded and screened to each class on National Day. As the school congratulated and recognised our achievement of being appointed as student leaders, we pledged to do our best in serving the school. The prefects also aided in organising SC Day, a greatly anticipated event celebrated in conjunction with National Day. This year’s SC Day was much different, as the National Day concert was live streamed to each of the individual classes, and we were unable to have our usual food and games stalls. Instead, we participated in the SCGS Do For Fun:D, during which each class performed as many jumping jacks as they could within a given time frame. The class would then raise as much money as the number of jumping jacks performed for a charity of their choice and Fund120, a fund which aims to support students in SCGS in need of financial assistance. The event was a meaningful one that enabled us to give back to the wider community in a time of need, while celebrating Singapore’s birthday. This year’s Teachers’ Day was entitled “SCTV, a channel made for you”. The Teachers’ Day concert was live streamed and featured many amazing performances from students, the teachers, and the school leaders! The teachers partook in “The Magic School Bus”, during which they travelled from class to class to visit their students. The event was a rousing success, and we are thankful to have been able to have a great time with our wonderful teachers in the midst of the pandemic. In 2018, our seniors in the 68th Prefectorial Board started the Exam Survival Kit initiative, which we continued during the End-of-Year Exam period. The prefects, peer leaders and accelerated leaders worked closely together to pack care packages of Milo, Hello Panda, and other treats for each member of the student body. Our hearts were warmed as we witnessed the laughter and cheer when our schoolmates received their care packages and ate their snacks together. Although some events were unable to take place this year, we are grateful that we had been able to serve the student body during this trying period. As student leaders, we have shown grit and tenacity in facing difficulties head on. We would like to say a huge thank you to our teachers-in-charge and the school management for supporting us wholeheartedly in our role as student leaders, as well as for being flexible and open-minded in listening to the ideas we put forward. We cannot wait to see what the future boards will accomplish, and we wish them all the best as they carry out their duties. Cameron Setiadi (Sec 4SE)
