Crystal Bowersox is coming home to perform at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds July 9. Tickets, which go on sale at 10 a.m. May 16, are $25 each. “We thought it would be nice to bring her back,” said Jon Overmyer, treasurer of the Ottawa County Agricultural Society. According to Overmyer, the group is hiring light and sound crews and renting a larger stage to cover the existing one in the center of the track. The first 1,500 tickets sold will be for reserved seating in the grandstand. The next level of seating will be on bleachers, and even more seating will be available on the track. “Bring your blanket, bring your chair and sit wherever you want,” Overmyer said. Fair campers will be offered a package deal this year that will allow them to set up before the show for an additional fee. Tickets will be available at the fair board office, 7870 W. Ohio 163, Oak Harbor, or by phone at 419-898-1971. Overmyer said he hopes tickets will be available by email as well at ocfair@amplex.net. Port Clinton Board of Education member Michelle Mueller, Superintendent Pat Adkins and board members David Belden, Beth Benko and Paul Shaw stand behind Bataan second-grader Bella Calderon and she breaks ground on the school’s expansion.
Students, staffers thank supporters at groundbreaking By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor Students of Bataan Elementary saw another step in the school’s history Friday when ground was broken for an expanded campus. Dignitaries, school supporters and alumni gathered with students in the gym to celebrate and thank those who helped the Port Clinton City School District update and upgrade for the future. “Our community has offered today’s sacrifices for tomorrow’s success,” said David Belden, president of the school board. In November 2009, voters supported a bond issue for new facilities. Friday marked the beginning of an $18 million renovation and addition project to
transform Bataan into a state-of-the-art campus for preschool through grade five. “This community really loves you,” State Rep. Dennise Murray told the students. Murray, along with Belden and Superintendent Pat Adkins, thanked the community for that support. The project was designed in partnership with the community, Board of Education, city of Port Clinton, construction manager RJ Runge, Inc., of Catawba, architect Fanning & Howey and a committee of educators from both Bataan and Jefferson Elementary Schools. “I want to recognize and thank all those who served on committees and worked for passage of the levy,” said Adkins.

Sound Off People in Action National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, is a time to celebrate our local American Red Cross volunteers. This year’s theme, Celebrating People in Action, aptly describes Red Cross volunteers as they are doers, people in action. The American Red Cross of Ottawa County has more than 100 volunteers from all walks of life. They come together with one common purpose: to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Red Cross volunteers are always ready to turn compassion into action and help people down the street, across the nation and around the world. They teach lifesaving safety courses such as first aid, CPR, babysitting and care giving. Volunteers serve veterans, members of the military, and their families; work at blood drives; respond to large and small disasters; and provide international tracing ser-

vices. During National Volunteer Week the American Red Cross wants to thank each volunteer. We take this time to recognize the selfless gifts of time, money and blood the Red Cross has received from the citizens of our local communities. National Volunteer Week is also a time to invite you to join us. If you are not a volunteer, give the Red Cross a try. Red Crossers are people who are trained to perform extraordinary acts in the face of emergencies. Right now we especially need people who are interested in becoming a first aid and CPR instructor or a Disaster Services volunteer responder. To volunteer, contact Beth Leggett or Deena Camerato at 419-734-1100. Tim Yenrick Regional Director NW Ohio

Competition — A good thing or a bad thing? Competition is a good thing. It’s about finding out how well you can do something under pressure. It’s about challenging yourself to get better. It can be about working together with others to accomplish a goal. You compete to succeed; to be the best you can be. Yes, it is also about winning. Actually, it’s about wanting to win, working to win and preparing to win. We can have competition with ourselves (often our toughest opponent). We can compete with another person, team, business or country. Competition is the same in a job as it is in sports. It’s the same as being in a class play as it is giving a band performance. To have a good outcome, a person has to focus on and commit to doing the work needed to improve. Doing one’s best when something really important is a challenge everyone should take. As a coach, I wanted players who were good competitors. If they were good athletes, it was a bonus. A really gifted athlete can be a challenge to motivate. If success comes too easily, there is no reason to work very hard. Then, when facing a tough opponent, they may lack the determination to battle and will give up emotionally. Having to work hard in practice will carry over to a game. Overcoming problems in preparation teaches a player to handle adversity later. Competition has a bad reputation, however. Even in a Thesau-

rus, other words for “competitive” are “bloodthirsty” and “cutthroat.” That’s about as negative and unattractive as it can get! When did wanting to win become a bad thing? When did losing become unforgiveable? It turned ugly when it became so important to win that our culture embraced a “win at all costs” philosophy. Kids and coaches are under so much pressure to win today, that the fun has gone out of playing sports for many. We have wide-spread cheating, inflated egos, bad sportsmanship, personal attacks and player burn out. Media coverage has become pretty rough. Talk shows and the Internet give fans a chance to complain to a big audience. Players get raked over the coals for mistakes and coaches get secondguessed for every play that doesn’t work. It takes a thick skin to be in athletics at the pro and Division I levels these days. The pressure is to do anything to win. What makes me truly upset is that this tendency is filtering down to youth sports. We are losing a lot of really good people every year — both officials and coaches — who work with kids in a positive way. We are also seeing a great many kids drop out of sports by the time they enter high school. Actually, that trend has now moved to before middle school. The reasons are usually about not having any fun and the sport taking too much time. Those two
reasons can be traced directly to how much pressure the athletes and coaches feel. The officials are leaving due to abusive crowd behavior. We have lost all perspective about what is important for children, and we are teaching some really negative things about playing sports. What can we, as concerned adults, do to counteract the negative aspects of competition? Primarily, we must lead the way in teaching our kids that being a real winner involves more than just the score. It depends on how one treats other people along the way. It depends on how hard they worked. Did they respect the officials? Did they follow the rules, written and unwritten? Were they honest? Were they gracious to those who didn’t win? Did they acknowledge the people who helped them? We must separate the act of competing from the result of the competition. Will we be proud of them if they compete well but don’t win? Yes. Will we love them just as much? Yes. Can we keep the scoreboard from determining pride or love? If the answers all, “yes,” we will raise competitive winners. nnn

‘Stress Busters’ for the Sandwich Generation You may be too busy to realize it, but April is Stress Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Health Resource Network, a nonprofit health education group, Stress Awareness Month is designed to promote awareness about ways to reduce stress in our lives. And if you’re a member of the so-called “Sandwich Generation,” you may well have plenty of stress to deal with — especially financial stress. And that’s why you may want to look at this month as an opportunity to explore ways of “destressing” yourself. To understand the scope of the problem facing people in your situation, consider this: One out of every eight Americans aged 40 to 60 is raising a child while caring for an aging parent, according to the Pew Research Center. The definition of “eldercare” can range from having the parent living in one’s home to helping pay for the parent’s stay in an assisted living or nursing home facility. When you consider the costs involved in this type of care, added to the expenses of raising your children and possibly even providing some financial support to them as young adults, it’s easy to see how you could potentially face enormous strains, both emotionally and financially. To help ease this burden, consider these suggestions: • Save. As a Sandwich Generation member, you’re probably within shouting distance of your own retirement — so you need to save for it. This may not be easy. You don’t know how much financial support you may someday have to provide your elderly parents — and even after your children are grown, they may need some help from you. Unfortunately, in helping these “boomerang” children, many people disrupt their day-to-day cash flow and raid their savings. That’s why it’s important to try to “pay yourself first” by deferring part of each paycheck into a 401(k) and by automatically moving money each month from your checking or savings account into an IRA. • Talk. Many people in the “Greatest Generation” (over age 80) have not even prepared a will. If your parents are in that group, you may want to talk to them about taking action. Also, find out who, if anyone, is handling their investments. And ask if your parents understand how Medicare works and if they need to add supplemental health insurance, such as Medigap. Plus, you need to find out if your parents have created a power of attorney or health care directive. It’s best to have these conversations sooner rather than later. • Delegate. You eventually may have to take some responsibility for your parents’ care — but you don’t have to do it alone. You could, for example, work with a financial services provider that offers trust services, which can be invaluable if your parents are incapacitated and useful even if they aren’t. A professional trust officer can, among other duties, help manage your parents’ investments, pay their bills, keep their records and supervise distribution of their assets to beneficiaries. In short, a qualified trust officer can make life a lot easier for you. Stress Awareness Month lasts only 30 days, but by taking the right steps, you can de-stress yourself for many years to come. After all, just because you’re in the Sandwich Generation, it doesn’t mean you have to be “squished.” nnn

County getting new administrator The Ottawa County Commissioners have hired Dennis Jensen, a 1985 Oak Harbor High School graduate and 1989 graduate of The Ohio State University where he received a bachelor of science in business administration with a major in accounting. He worked at Deloitte & Touche, LLP accounting firm in Columbus, for 10 years auditing U.S.based and international manufacturing, construction and insurance companies and earned his CPA license. Jensen worked eight years in the insurance industry, most recently at Nationwide Insurance where he was an associate vice president of accounting before leaving to start his own business practice two years ago. Jensen is returning home to Ottawa County with his family to accept the Ottawa County Administrator’s position beginning April 18. The Board of Commissioners is pleased to add the additional skills and knowledge that Jensen can provide to the organization.
