Birders back for Biggest Week Thousands expected for second annual birding festival By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor Birders from around the world are descending on Ottawa County for the second annual Biggest Week in American Birding. The festival — celebrating the spring migration — features 11 days of bird watching and nature activities around Crane Creek, Magee Marsh and the Ottawa National Wildlife Ref-

uge along Lake Erie. The program features guided bird walks, bird ID workshops and programs with birding expert Kenn Kaufman, field trips and family and beginner bird walks, among other activities. “We’ve long surpassed the numbers from last year,” said Kim Kaufman, executive director of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory. “People are still

registering.” Last year, the event pulled thousands to the beaches of Lake Erie and even drew in an unexpected star. “It was very special to have Ken Kaufman find the rarest warbler on the planet, the Kirtland’s Warbler, on the east beach at Magee,” said Kim. According to Kim, the marshes of northwest Ohio are the

only regularly documented habitat of this warbler — a critically endangered species — and people have traveled here from all over the world just to see that species. And thanks to techonology, news of the bird’s sighting traveled fast

The Port Clinton High School Concert Band will pay tribute to “The March King,” John Philip Sousa at its Sunday, May 15, concert. The show will begin at 3 p.m. at the PCHS Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, however, a free-will donation will be taken at the end of the concert. Music includes something for all ages and of course, the concert will conclude in traditional Sousa style with the playing of “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Miss Ohio 2009, Erica Gelhaus, will be the guest vocal soloist. Ottawa County Judge Fritz Hany will be a feature narrator. Rod Miller, PCHS Band Director, will portray John Phillip Sousa. The PCHS Band always honors veterans at the Sousa concert, and this year will pay special tribute to veterans of the Vietnam War. Audiences have always been close to capacity and the same is expected again this year. Doors will open at 2 p.m. and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Port Clinton Music Boosters are having a BBQ chicken dinner at the conclusion of the concert. Meals are $8.50 and include a half-chicken, baked potato, baked beans, and roll and butter. All dinners are carry-out only. Proceeds will go toward the cost of the upcoming trip to Florida by the Port Clinton High School Band and Orchestra and the Port Clinton Music Boosters. Tickets can be purchased from any band or orchestra member or by contacting Miller at 419-734-2147 or rmiller@pccsd. net. Miller is currently in his fifth year as director of bands for the Port Clinton City Schools and this is the 23rd year he has presented such a concert.

Sound Off Tax the rich? Class envy has always been an effective tactic of politicians pandering for votes and nothing has worked better than the call to “tax the rich.” Americans unfortunately have been intentionally deprived when it comes to history and few realize the futility of trying to tax the rich. Shortly after the Wilson administration dumped the progressive income tax on us with the 16th amendment, government raised the top tax rate from 7 percent to 77 percent. Surprise, revenues didn’t change. The rich simply rearranged their finances to defer income through Rabbi Trusts or other vehicles or stopped producing when they approached the higher brackets and nonproduction took its toll on the poor and middle class. Thirty years later, the Internal Revenue Service informed President Calvin Coolidge that higher progressive rates lead to “the point of getting nothing at all.” His Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon found the top rate for maximum revenue was 25 percent. The next time you hear a politician call for a tax on the rich, he is probably drawing a target on your back because he knows there are too few rich and you are the only dependable source when it comes to taxes. You should always ask this question: would you be better off with wealth in the hands of those with the ability to produce more wealth or those who simply redistribute it for votes? Class envy allows corrupt politicians in the name of compassion to sacrifice you as he decides who is needier while civilization degenerates. Jim Boehm Port Clinton

Two years ago this month, Port Clinton streets, automobiles, cellars and basements were flooded by a deluge of rainwater in quantities that our antiquated storm sewers couldn’t handle. One of the reasons was that they were clogged with debris accumulated over time. (Are we heading there again?) Drive down any street in the city at this time of year and you’ll see where this sewer debris comes from: people who have cut their grass and blown the clippings out in the street. I’d like to think that these people are not ignorant or inconsiderate, but … where do they think these clippings go? Do they evaporate? No, they get washed down to clog our storm sewers. And those that do get through the system get

Not a bright idea The Libs are at again. Back in 2007, the Dems passed a bill that effectively bans traditional incandescent light bulbs starting in 2012. Goodbye to Thomas Alva Edison and his invention. What’s next, Congress to tell us what type of socks or underwear we can use? Again, in an effort to go green they have destroyed more American jobs. The last major GE factory making ordinary incandescent bulbs in the United States closed in September 2007. The remaining employees of the Virginia plant lost their jobs. The plant was vulnerable because of the 2007 Bill. Rather than helping American industry, the fluorescents or CFLs are made almost entirely overseas, mostly in China. These bulbs consist of twisted glass tubes which require more hand labor. Shouldn’t the American buying public decide what type of bulbs to buy? The EPA doesn’t like the new bulb because the amount of mercury in one bulb is enough to contaminate up to 6,000 gallons of water beyond safe drinking level. A broken CFL in the home can create a serious health hazard. Last month Mike Enzi, senator from Wyoming introduced a bill to repeal portions of the 2007 law. Write your congressman to support this new bill. Ron Mainous

Workplace safety In the 40 years since the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration was created, the agency has led the way to historic declines in workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. Today OSHA continues to make a difference in the lives of all workers by ensuring that businesses provide safe and healthful conditions for their workers. At the turn of 20th century, death in American workplaces was all too common, working conditions were dreadful and few laws existed to protect workers. Through efforts by individual workers, unions, employers, government agencies and others, significant progress has been made in improving workplace conditions. Since OSHA’s inception in 1970, workplace fatalities have been cut by more than 65 percent and occu-

pational injury and illness rates have declined 67 percent. At the same time, U.S. employment has almost doubled and now totals over 107 million workers at 7.6 million worksites. In 1970, on average, 38 American workers were killed on the job every day. That rate has now fallen to just over 12 workers per day. That’s an outstanding collective achievement. But there is clearly much work to be done to ensure that all workers can be productive and safe, while looking forward to a retirement free from disabling occupational disease and injury. In northwest Ohio, fall hazards, trenching hazards and grain handling hazards, remain serious issues our inspectors have identified. These are hazards for which there have long been common sense OSHA regulations in place. These protections are designed to keep workers safe and earning a paycheck, while also allowing businesses to continue to operate without the tragic interruptions and high worker retraining, insurance and compensation costs that accompany workplace tragedies. In 2004 and 2007, we witnessed tragic accidents occur during the building of the Glass City Skyway, which resulted in five workers being killed and many others injured. In 2010, there were 42 fatalities throughout Ohio. These were preventable situations that don’t need to be repeated, as long as employers and workers are committed to safety. Over the past four decades, American workers across all industry have benefited from common sense government standards and greater awareness of workplace safety practices brought about by OSHA. Workers in high hazard industries such as construction and manufacturing have especially benefited from OSHA’s efforts. OSHA has had a positive impact in the lives of all Americans. However, until every worker can return home safely, free from harm at the end of the day, we must celebrate cautiously and never lose sight of the fact that no job is a good job unless it’s also a safe job. Perry Street resurfacing project gets early start The Ohio Department of Transportation will begin work on the resurfacing of Perry Street within the Corporation Limits of the City this week. According to Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester, the work will include the area between Adams and Washington streets and the area from Oak Street going east to Ohio 2. The street will be milled with several inches of asphalt removed and then resurfaced. Tester said the original plan was to have

this paving work done after Labor Day, but the agreement with the contractor indicated it could occur prior to Memorial Day or after Labor Day. The contractor decided to begin this portion of the project now and have it completed before May 30. The project is financed as part of ODOT’s Urban Paving Program with the City of Port Clinton paying 20 percent of the total project cost and ODOT contributing 80 percent of the total project cost.

TriMotor restoration crew celebrates milestone The Ford TriMotor being restored at Port Clinton’s airport celebrated a milestone last month. It was April 9, 1929, that she made her first test flight over the Ford Airport in Dearborn, Mich., before being delivered to Cia Mexicana de Aviacion in Mexico City, and then ending up in Cuba, and it was Aril 9, 2011, that the birthday celebrated. That makes her 82 years old now and the group of restorers celebrated with a red, white and blue cake. This plane, serial number 5AT-40, was also an Island Airlines plane and served the Bass Islands from 1946 to 1952. Milton Hershberger bought it in Cuba and flew it home from there for $4,100. A piece of the original skin

from the 82-yearold plane was placed behind the cake and in scant blue letters above the door were “Companie Cubana de Aviacion,” hence when it was here it was always known as the Cuban Ford. The crew works on restoring this plane every Monday and Thursday evening in the main hangar at the airport beginning at 7 p.m. If you would like to come out and

Military Navy

Navy Seaman Recruit Kendra M. Hetrick, daughter of Kelly A. and Rollin O. Hetrick, of Oak Harbor, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Hetrick completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is

“Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Hetrick is a 2008 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

BIRD from 1A “We are the first bird festival in the country to use Twitter,” said Kim. The micro-blogging website allows real-time updates from the field. The Kirtland’s message — or “tweet heard round the bird world” at the festival organizers have come to call it — allowed for maximum viewing of the bird. For this year’s sightings, follow “biggestweek” on Twitter.com. Though registration is required for most of the activities, family and beginner bird walks are free. For information on those and other events, visit www. biggestweekinamericanbirding.com or call the Black Swamp Bird Observatory at 419-898-4070.

Lifetime income: A great Mother’s Day gift Mother’s Day will soon be here. If you’re a mother, you will (hopefully) receive thoughtful cards and gifts. But there’s one present you may eventually want to give yourself, and it’s a gift that truly does keep on giving: a strategy for your retirement. Of course, it’s important for everyone to build adequate financial resources for retirement — but the challenge is even greater for women. Largely due to family responsibilities, women spend, on average, 12 years less in the workforce than men, according to the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement. Less time in the workforce equates to lost earnings, missed promotions, smaller and fewer raises and reduced retirement plan benefits. In fact, men have, on average, about $91,000 in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), including all IRA types and the amounts rolled over from other retirement accounts into IRAs, compared to just $51,000 for women, according to a recent report issued by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Whether you’re married, divorced, widowed or single, you’ll want to build financial resources of your own and be prepared to manage your finances during your retirement years. You’ll be helping yourself,

Barry and Dan Bergman stand among the apple trees in one of the family’s orchards last summer.

Bergman Orchards featured in ‘Our Ohio’ Those interested in learning how the massive amounts of rain in March and April will affect the local fruit crops should read the latest issue of “Our Ohio” magazine. This month’s issue highlights owners of Bergman Orchards Dan and Barry Bergman. The brothers are fifth-generation farmers who operate a 500-acre farm, including 150 acres of cherry, nectarine, plum, peach, pear and apple trees. “A rainy season will aggravate diseases in the orchard,” Barry said. “Diseases have to have a host, and water is it.” The Bergmans work closely with field scout Ted Gastier who helped launch Ohio’s Integrated Pest Management Program for fruit growers in 1989. Gastier monitors pest and disease chal-

lenges at 18 orchards in northern Ohio throughout the growing season, and offers solutions. Readers will learn about the techniques the Bergmans and other orchardists apply to control pests and diseases without high pesticide usage, such as pheromones and other scented traps. For the full article about Bergman Orchards, readers can visit OurOhio.org, the magazine’s website or to receive Our Ohio magazine, sign up to become a Farm Bureau member by calling 1-888-GrowWithFB or visiting GrowWithFB.org. Our Ohio is an effort to help further the Ohio Farm Bureau’s mission of forging a partnership between farmers and consumers and is supported by Nationwide Insurance.

and, by becoming financially independent, you’ll also avoid the possibility of depending on your grown children for support. To help ensure a financially secure retirement, consider these ideas: • Fully fund your IRA each year. As the numbers above show, women are way behind men when it comes to funding their IRAs. And IRAs, with their tax advantages, are great retirement-savings vehicles. A traditional IRA have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis, while Roth IRAs have the potential to grow tax-free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2. So make it a priority to “max out” on your IRA each year. In 2011, you can put in up to $5,000 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. • Boost your 401(k) contributions. Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. At the very least, contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. (In 2011, you can put in up to $16,500, or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older.) Your earnings have the opportunity to

grow tax-deferred and you have a range of investment options, so your 401(k) or other retirement plan can be an effective, flexible way to put money away for the future. • Invest in an annuity. If you’ve reached the contribution limits of your IRA and 401(k), you may want to consider purchasing an annuity, which can be structured to provide you with regular payments for the rest of your life. And this lifetime income source is especially important to women, who, at age 65, can expect to live, on average, almost 20 more years, compared to slightly over 17 for men of the same age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a mother, you willingly spend a great deal of time and effort on your children. But it’s important to also think about yourself and your future, so review your strategy for retirement with your financial advisor, and take the actions needed to help make sure you can enjoy all the Mother’s Days of your life in the comfort you deserve. nnn

By KAREN COFFIN

Coffin’s Corner

My girls ... Much is written about the influence a coach can have on his or her athletes. Very little is heard about the reverse: the effect of players on their coach. For those of us who do the job for a long time, especially at the local level, the relationships we build with kids are the main reason we keep at it. The kids become part of our lives. We consider them to be members of our families, even if we interact with them for just a few years. We enjoy the rare privilege of being able to work with youngsters during the formative years of their lives. We get to celebrate the good times with them and console them during the bad ones. Of course, the good times are the most fun! When someone masters a difficult skill, it’s a time for the wonderful feeling of success that comes from hard work. The coach is the one person who gets to notice and appreciate the cost of that effort. We don’t want to miss the chance to recognize it in someway either. The wild celebration that can take place after a truly tough victory against a worthy opponent makes a lifetime memory. For me, it was just as memorable to be there and receive a long emotional hug from a JV player after her first win. The experience of having a doubles team run toward me with outstretched arms after advancing to District competition still brings a smile. It also brings thanksgiving that I saw them coming and braced myself or I would have been flattened and would have needed a visit to the emergency room! The bad times are tough. Sometimes you just sit quietly beside a player until they can collect their emotions and begin to face teammates, parents or the press. Other times, you are angry with the player’s performance, but you have to channel the anger into motivation for things to change. Occasionally, you have to help kids forgive themselves for messing up, and other times you have to shield them from their own angry parents. Generally, you just have to be there. Remember, I coached girls. Girls cry when they are sad and when they are happy. I had permanent mascara stains on all my jackets where players cried on my shoulders. I didn’t care. It was part of my job, and it meant they knew I cared about them. That’s the real key. Good coaches care about every kid and want the best for them. Not every player believes that unfortunately, because coaches have to make

difficult decisions that cause them pain. A decision that makes one athlete happy may well devastate another. Privately, we agonize over the unhappiness, but making hard decisions is also part of our job. My biggest reward came from watching insecure teenagers grow into remarkable young women. As freshmen, they were tentative and afraid of making mistakes. As seniors, they were confident, and composed. They faced adversity with courage. They had experienced winning and losing and knew how to handle both. Certainly, this maturation was not all due to playing tennis, but I truly believe that it was an important factor. All this reflection on my part is largely due to the upcoming induction of one of “my girls” into the Port Clinton High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Dr. Laura Kokinda, PhD, will be the sole inductee on May 21st at the Port Clinton Elk’s Club with dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the induction ceremony. It was my privilege to be her high school coach. She was a standout performer throughout her career, setting many records and receiving numerous awards including three second team All-Ohio honors. She attended BGSU on a full athletic scholarship and played four years of Division I collegiate tennis. As fine a tennis player as she was, Kokinda was an even better person. She was dedicated, disciplined and a quiet team leader. She earned the respect from opposing players, parents and coaches and always upheld the highest standards of good sportsmanship. Laura was a winner both on and off the court. She truly represented her school and community with class. She’s not just one of my girls; she belongs to us all: her teammates, Port Clinton residents, PCHS, the SBC and her own family. Please think about attending the HOF Induction on the 21st. Tickets are available at the high school. It’s a chance for us to honor one of our best before she heads back to California to continue her career in clinical psychology. It would be great to let her know how proud we are of one of our own. nnn
