Agriculture education teacher Louie Damschroder goes over plans with Jake Bartrom, 17, for a table the student was making as a Mother’s Day gift.

Popular teacher retires after 35 years in the classroom

This year’s FFA T-shirt was dedicated to retiring teacher Louie Damschroder.

By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor Louie Damschroder — or Mr. D as he is known by his students — is retiring after 35 years of teaching agriculture education at Oak Harbor High School. In that time, the farming industry and landscape have changed, but Damschroder’s commitment to his students and the agriculture community has not. He has spent countless hours involved in community projects, volunteering for the Oak Harbor Young Farmers and Young Farm Wives groups as well as serving as an FFA advisor and 4-H leader. Over the years, Damshcroder has taught generations of area families and become a stable fixture at the Ottawa County Fair.

“It’s going to take some time to get used to him not being here,” said Ashley Buhrow, a 16-year-old student who has known Damschroder most of her life. According to Buhrow, Mr. D’s teaching style includes using a lot of his own life stories and lessons — lessons that Damschroder is quick to thank his coworkers for providing. “I’ve been given many outstanding people to work with,” Damschroder said. “Those people have empowered me to be who I am today.” One of those coworkers is former ag teacher and current high school principal Keith Thorbahn. “His biggest strength is probably his

The National Guard FLW Walleye Tour will visit Lake Erie in Port Clinton today through Friday for the first of four events this season. The tournament, hosted by the City of Port Clinton and Lake Erie Shores and Islands, will feature more than 260 top walleye anglers, casting for awards of up to $63,000 in the Pro Division and $10,500 in the Co-angler Division. “The biggest thing about that event right now is the lake is going to have to lay down,” said Walmart pro Dean Arnoldussen of Appleton, Wis., who is the FLW Walleye Tour’s all-time leading money winner. “With the wind and the amount of rain we’ve gotten so far, we really need the water to clear up. We’ve been looking at the satellite imagery and it’s pretty dirty right now. I’ve had a lot of buddies go out there and not do that great because of the wind and the decreased visibility right now.” Arnoldussen believes that Erie will clear up by the time the tournament begins and said anglers should do well once they locate fish. He said the most popular techniques will be dragging spinners or crankbaits in anywhere from 20 to 50 feet of water. “We just need a couple of good days of prefishing,” Arnoldussen said. “It’s just a matter of looking for the correct water clarity. You’ll find them wherever.” Arnoldussen said the majority of the fish will have spawned by tournament time and will be more dispersed in Erie’s waters. “Once you locate pods of fish it will be pretty easy to catch them,” Arnoldussen said. “I would say it will take about 30 pounds a day to make the cut. And I think to win it you’ve got to have between 33 and 35 pounds a day.” Anglers will take off from Nor’ Easter Club on Catawba Island at 7 each morning. Today and Friday’s weigh-ins will be held at Wate Works Park in downtown Port Clinton beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s fi-

Sound Off Friends of PC Parks This year, at the request of the City of Port Clinton Parks and Recreation Committee, the Friends of Port Clinton Parks plans to install electric hand dryers in the restrooms at Lakeview Park. This project will eliminate the cost and litter of paper towels and help in the prevention of disease — not to mention saving a few trees. We also have been asked to install baby-changing stations in each restroom for the convenience, privacy and safety of the youngest visitors to our Park. The total cost of this project is approximately $1,950. We are also planning to complete a new plexiglass sign for the park so that visitors will know they are in Lakeview Park, Port Clinton. The sign shows a large boat, sailing on Lake Erie’s waters with seagulls gliding overhead. The sign will grace the front of the new restroom building, accompanied by a large plaque containing the names of all who have contributed over the years to the enhancement and maintenance of Lakeview Park. The cost of this project is $1,600. There is still time to purchase a lamp post for $1,200 (only four are available), a sidewalk square for $250, a parking space for $120 or a brick for $50. Any donation, large or small, will be

very helpful and greatly appreciated to finish the projects that need to be done in Lakeview Park. Donations can be mailed to: Friends of Port Clinton Parks 2011 Membership Drive 113 Cedar St. Port Clinton, OH 43452 For questions, call Sharon Mefferd at 419-734-2954. Sincerely yours Robert E. Butcher, Bob Underwood, Sharon Mefferd, Caroline Droll, Larry Hartlaub, Nancy ONeil, Jeanne Auxter, Roseann Barker,

Tax the Rich? Yes. “Few realize the futility of trying to tax the rich,” said Jim Boehm in a recent letter to this paper. But as one goes through his shallow arguments, one quickly realizes that he offers few facts or data to back up his claims. A more thorough discussion using the most recent information from the IRS and other government sources (2007) rather than Calvin Coolidge should help put the issue in a clearer perspective. Firstly, it is true that the rich on the whole pay more income tax than the less fortunate, but when all taxes and fees are considered, the numbers are considerably different. For example, in Alabama, those making more than $230,000 a year pay less than 4 per-

cent in state and local taxes. Those earning less than $13,000 a year pay 11 percent. Also, Social Security, Medicare and other taxes (which make up 50 percent of federal taxes) are paid by all, and disproportionately by the lower earning classes. Because of tax loopholes and other benefits, many rich earners (Donald Trump, anyone) haven’t paid income tax for years. Even when they pay taxes, the rich get off better than others. The top 400 income tax payers have seen their share of taxes drop to 16.6 percent. The middle class, however, has seen its share rise from 13.1 percent (1961) to 22.5 percent (2007). Opponents of raising taxes on the rich say that the money collected will only be a drop in the bucket. ‘Tis true, but enough drops will fill that bucket. I’m not saying that cost-cutting shouldn’t be part of balancing the budget, many programs have to be pared. When the uber rich such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Ben Stein and others claim that the rich should pay more taxes, then people should listen. Since I have no confidence that I’d be “better off with wealth in the hands of those with the ability to produce more wealth,” I’ll go with option B and raise taxes on the rich, both individuals and corporations. GREENING UP DANBURY TOWNSHIP

More than a month of soggy conditions prevented the planting of a rain garden at Meadowbrook Marsh in Danbury Township. Finally, on May 4, the skies parted long enough for volunteers and employees to install native plants near the park’s wildlife observation deck. Helping out with the planting was Road Superintendent Jim Dress, maintenance employees Brett Waldron, Jared Griffith and Danny Bergman, Township Trustee Dianne Rozak, Soil and Water Conservation District employees Becky Simpson and Mike Gargac, and members of the Ottawa Sandusky Master Gardener Program including Steve Gluk, Stanley Gahn, Ron Knopf and Shirley Beck. Funding for the rain garden plants and sign was provided by a grant from the Soil & Water Conservation District. On May 7, Bill and Margie Klaehn and their family along with Jody Adams and Marv Rothenbuhler joined Dianne Rozak at Sackett Cemetery for the annual planting of orange cosmos flower seeds along the fence line.

Local honored at Terra’s graduation Four members of the Terra Community College Class of 2011 received more than their diplomas during commencement ceremonies Friday. Delayne Geesey, Angela Harris, Barb Rayle and Jason Fatzinger were recognized as the winners of the annual Terra Graduate Awards for 2010-2011. Geesey, a medical office admin- HARRIS istration major from Fremont, was chosen to represent the Class of 2011 as the student commencement speaker. Harris and Rayle will receive the Perseverance Awards while Fatzinger will pick up the Community Service Award. A Port Clinton resident, Harris is finishing a double major in social work and social work-chemical dependency. She will begin classes in the social work program at Spring Arbor University this fall. She was touched by the nomination. “I have had a tremendous amount of adversity to overcome from many different sources,” Harris said. “It is nice to know that my peers/teachers have noticed and took the time to nominate me for this award. It has been a difficult, but rewarding journey, and I appreciate this recognition.” Terra’s 42nd annual commencement ceremony was Friday, May 7, in the Student Activities Center.

The project has already achieved Designed to Earn the Energy Star status through the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program. Fanning Howey is an award-winning architectural and engineering firm, focusing on educational and community facilities planning and design. PC schools name Flagship winners The Flagship Awards are part of Port Clinton City School District’s recognition program to honor parents, community members, staff and students that help the district fulfill its motto of “Proudly Charting a Course for Success.” At the March 21 meeting, the Port Clinton Board of Education recognized the following with Flagship Awards: • Jane Fleming, First Mate Award (Parents) — No matter what the event, if it involves PCHS students Jane Fleming is probably there. Jane is the mother of three and her twin boys, Jared and Jacob, are seniors. Throughout her children’s education, Jane has been extremely involved in all of their activities. Her involvement does not benefit her children alone. Her hard work, dedication and being considered the “goto person” for so many organizations and events, she gets the job done for all our students. Here are just a few examples of her dedication: she has organized the set-up of the Sousa Concert and served as a chaperone for various band functions including the trip to Florida in 2007; she is actively involved in the PC Wrestling Parents Club and has volunteered from biddy to the varsity level; she has helped check in alumni band members at the annual alumni band night since its inception; and she has spearheaded countless team feeds for football, baseball, track and the PCHS Band. Jane is one of the parents who goes above and beyond to make our athletic and music programs strong. Her

He is a 1935 graduate of Port Clinton High School and went on to play baseball in the major leagues. He can be seen at football, basketball and countless other Port Clinton City School District events. He is also a member of the Port Clinton High School Athletic Hall of Fame and has served as an invaluable member of the selection committee for years. His children and grandchildren attended Port Clinton City Schools and he instilled the value of service to his children,

Mike and Donna, as they volunteer countless hours to our student athletes and athletic programs … just like their father. Mike Drusbacky Sr.’s biggest impact has been on the Redskin baseball program. Baseball and kids have always been a big part of his life. For decades, he has been a volunteer coach sharing his expertise and love of the game. He never expects praise or recognition for helping hundreds of Redskin athletes learn the game of baseball. Last year, even heart surgery didn’t keep him away from the team long. The school district is extremely grateful for the thousands of hours “Coach Druz” has spent with the Redskin baseball program and his endless commitment to Port Clinton student athletes.

ability to listen,” said Thorbahn, also a former student of Mr. D. “I just think he really represents what the Oak Harbor a program is really about.” Damschroder said his connection with the students and fellow staffers is something he has continually worked at over the years. “You’ve got to earn the respect of the students and prove you love them,” he said. But it’s not only the students that Mr. D reaches out to. The teachers — and ag education leaders from around the state — have taken to calling Damschroder for advice and innovative ideas. “He’s always a good sounding board,” said Thorbahn. “You can run an idea past him and he’ll give an honest answer.”

Ohio University has announced the names of 3,647 students from the Athens Campus who have been named to the 2011 winter quarter dean’s list. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must have earned a grade point average of at least a 3.5 for the quarter and have earned a minimum of 16 quarter hours, 12 of which were taken for letter grades. In my file on Paul’s Love Chapter (I CORINTHIANS 13), there is a new article about the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Ky. receiving a thank you letter in the mail. Nothing unusual about that. They’ve received quite a few. What was unusual was the address on the envelope: Angels of Mercy Somewhere in Kentucky Somehow the loving and merciful reputation of the Frontier Nursing Service was enough to bring them the letter with the seemingly inadequate address. Reading that article, I couldn’t help but think of a hymn that is often sung in churches — “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love.” In MATTHEW 25, Jesus Himself said something about recognizing Christians by the way they love and care. There are other non-Christian faiths in which love plays a central role in the lifestyle commanded by the faith. Critics of the Christian Church are often heard to say “The church preaches a lot about love, but it doesn’t really show

much love … and, when it does, it is usually ineffectual.” The same criticism is hurled at other faith-based expressions of love. When Christians fail to show love, the critics have a point. To be a Christian and not show love is like being a painter and never painting. When Christians and others acting out of their faith do show love, the results are anything but ineffectual. A secular study I have kept in that same file points out that if you want $1 to reach the needy, it will cost you $3 to get it through the federal government distribution centers. Through voluntary charitable institutions, it will cost 27 cents, but through the church the cost is only 8 cents. The study went on to give three reasons for the church’s ability to serve with such low overhead. First, the church has been in the business of helping longer than any other institution. Second, while church employees are not presently paid as poorly as in the past, their basic salary schedule is less than in other fields. Third, churches American Legion Post 113 are accustomed to cutting corners and avoiding frills. Yamaha donates simulators to Skills for Life program The marine trades Skills for Life program recently got a shot in the arm when the Yamaha Motor Corp. USA donated six engine simulators to the program. “This is just awesome,” said Instructor Gregg Sharp. “These simulators are invaluable to the people participating in this program. We are so grateful to Yamaha for thinking of us and making this donation. There is no way this program could have afforded to purchase such items.” The simulators include those

for both in-board and outboard engines and are valued at $16,850. They will allow participants to troubleshoot all kinds of problems that can occur with such marine engines. Such opportunities can only sharpen the skills of the program’s participants, Sharp said. The first to benefit from use of the simulators are those enrolled in the first-ever Advanced Marine Mechanics program. Fourteen marine mechanics employed in the marine industry are par-

ticipating in this program made possible by the Ottawa County Improvement Corp., the University of Toledo, Penta Career Center and WSOS Community Action Commission, which together developed and submitted a proposal that was funded by the Ohio Board of Regents-Ohio Skills Bank to advance the current marine trades Skills for Life program. For information on the marine trades program, call 419-3348911 or 1-800-775-9767.

Randy Witt, of Port Clinton, and Steve Frank, of Oak Harbor, examine the simulators donated to the Marine Mechanics program by the Yamaha Corp. Witt and Frank are enrolled in the Advance Marine Mechanics classes currently under way in Oak Harbor.

Own a small business? Consider these plans For a variety of reasons, many people, particularly those in the baby boom generation, are considering retiring later than they might have originally planned. If you’re in this group, you’ll want to take full advantage of those extra working years by contributing as much as you can to a retirement plan that can help you build resources, defer taxes and, ultimately, maximize income. And if you own a small business, you’ve got some attractive plans from which to choose. Let’s look at two of these retirement plans — the “owner-only” 401(k) and the defined benefit plan. If you have no employees other than your spouse or a partner, you can establish an “owner-only” 401(k), also known as an individual 401(k). This plan

offers many of the same advantages of a traditional 401(k): a range of investment options, tax-deductible contributions and the opportunity for tax-deferred earnings growth. You may even be able to choose a Roth option for your 401(k), which allows you to make after-tax contributions that have the opportunity to grow tax free. Your owner-only 401(k) contributions consist of two parts: salary deferral and profit sharing. In 2011, you can defer up to $16,500 of income, or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older. The amount of your profit-sharing contribution is based on your earnings. The sum of your employer contribution and your salary deferral contributions can’t exceed $49,000 in 2011 (or $54,500 if you’re 50 or older). Keep in mind that if your spouse is employed by your business, you each can contribute the maximum amount allowed.

You’ve got considerable flexibility in funding your owner-only 401(k). Both the salary deferral and the profit-sharing contributions are discretionary, so you can change them at any time based on your business’s profitability. Now, let’s move on to the defined benefit plan, which might be appropriate for you if you are highly compensated and have no other employees. By establishing a defined benefit plan, you’ll be providing yourself with a monthly payment (or “benefit”) for life, beginning at the retirement age specified by your plan. In 2011, the yearly benefit limit is $195,000. The amount you can contribute to your defined benefit plan each year is based on several variables, including your current age, your compensation level and your retirement age. But you’ll certainly be able to contribute large amounts: A defined benefit plan is the only retirement account that allows contributions in excess of the limits placed on 401(k)

s and other defined contribution plans. Generally speaking, the closer you get to retirement, the larger your maximum yearly contributions will be. (This is because you’ll have fewer years left in which to fund your defined benefit.) And since your defined benefit contributions are tax-deductible, you are, in effect, getting a big boost from the government to fund a generous retirement plan. Here’s one more benefit to owner-only 401(k) and defined benefit plans: You can contribute to both of them at the same time. But before you choose either or both of them, consult with your tax and financial advisors. After all, you work hard to help provide for a comfortable retirement tomorrow — so you’ll want a retirement plan working hard for you today. nnn

Local among Terra’s honored graduates Four members of the Terra Community College Class of 2011 received more than their diplomas during commencement ceremonies Friday. Delayne Geesey, Angela Harris, Barb Rayle and Jason Fatzinger were recognized as the winners of the annual Terra Graduate Awards for 2010-2011. Geesey, a medical office administra- HARRIS tion major from Fremont, was chosen to represent the Class of 2011 as the student commencement speaker. It has been a difficult, but rewarding journey, and I appreciate this recognition.”
