Community comes to the rescue By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher The lives of 46 people who live in the Lakeview Estates apartment complex were turned upside down in the early hours of Monday morning. A fire broke out in the apartment of Rita Barnett, 51, on the first floor of the building on Buckeye Boulevard in Port Clinton. She was critically injured in the fire. Now, the rebuilding of these peoples lives begins, and the com-

munity has pitched in to help … BIG TIME. You see, most of the people who live at Lakeview Estates are special needs individuals with a variety of disabilities. So, when smoke filled the building, the 46 people who live there were without a home and got out with little more than the clothes on their backs. Up steps Ron and Deb Miller, owners of Our Guest Inn in downtown Port Clinton. They are providing rooms for these

displaced persons all week long. Then, the American Red Cross came with even more assistance along with Magruder Hospital who sent two nurses and a pharmacist. Also, Truth Ministries is in there seeking donations and the Oak House is providing food and temporary shelter. The tenants held a meeting Tuesday at Our Guest Inn to be updated by the owner of the building, Owner’s Management Company from Cleveland and

their representative Jim Kazak. He was still waiting to meet with insurance adjusters and contractors to begin putting the apartment building back together. He told the residents that he would not move any of them back into the building until it was completely clean and safe. They also heard from Beth Leggett from the Red Cross and from their building manager, Ann Chio. Only a handful of the tenants had any insurance to help them

find a place to stay in the event of a fire. Few had contents insurance. Leggett told the tenants that they can help them pay for a place to stay until Sunday, but after that, they would need to find a place on their own. Kazak said it would take a minimum of a week to begin the process of letting the tenants get back into the building and back in their apartments. “I want to go home,” was the plaintiff cry of one of them. That will take some time.

Tell Tales

Don’t lose sight of what the day is all about Welcome to Memorial Day weekend, the “official start” of the summer season in the heart of Walleye Country! With all that will be going on this weekend, it is important to pause, especially on Monday, to remember why we celebrate this holiday. Amidst all the fun and family activities, which we get to enjoy because we live in a free country, it is most important that we remember that our freedom is not, nor ever will be free. Brave men and women paid for our ability to

enjoy ourselves in blood. They made the ultimate sacrifice. That is why we chose a special wrap for our insertions this week to commemorate those brave men and women. On the outside is an American Flag, which I urge you to display in your homes or vehicles to show your patriotism and how much you appreciate their sacrifice. nnn

The exhibit — created by Pat Williamsen from the Ohio Humanities Council in Columbus — features photographs taken by Depression-era artists accompanied by photographs of the same places as they were in 2010. These photographs depict work by the Civilian Conservation Corps, parks and monuments, and the planned community of Greenhills, Ohio, one of three “Greenbelt” communities built by the federal government during the 1930s. Also on display are Depression-era photographs taken from the museum’s collection showing life in Ottawa

County in the 1930s. Local photographs feature buildings built by local men employed through relief programs as well as images depicting how Ottawa Countians lived in difficult times. Early photographs of Standard Products, the Port Clinton train depot, the VFW and farm life show life as it was during difficult times. The Ottawa County Museum is located at 126 W. Third St. in Port Clinton. The museum is open from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and will be open after Memorial Day from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Curator Peggy Debien will open the museum at any time upon request; call her at 419-732-1039. Admission is free.

To help, donate used cell phones, chargers, pagers and accessories. These items are

sent for recycling which enables Cell Phones for Soldiers to buy pre-paid calling cards for military personnel. Exercise your financial fitness muscles A series of classes has been scheduled for residents to find out just how their financial fitness stacks up. Residents interested in learning how to improve/repair their credit rating, establish a savings plan, buy a home, or to understand other financial matters can attend one of the following classes: Tuesday, June 28; Tuesday, Sept. 27; Tuesday, Oct. 25; or Tuesday, Nov. 29. All classes start at 6 p.m. and are held at the Sandusky Area YMCA located at 2101 W. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. The classes are taught by a housing counselor from WSOS, who is approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Currently, millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet and live within a budget, and they are finding that doing so is not an easy task. These classes can help residents to develop a workable spending and savings plan, get out of debt, understand and improve their credit report, or learn how to buy a home. Those who may already own a home, it can help them plan for home repairs and other financial matters. These classes are made possible by a partnership of the City of Sandusky and WSOS Community Action Commission. Interested residents are encouraged to register early for the classes since these free classes fill quickly. To register, or for information, call Jaime Jennings at 419-734-2652 or 800-775-9767.

Otterbein North Shore award winners were: Board Chairman Jerry Phelps (back left), Volunteer of the Year Beth Infield, Philanthropist of the Year Bob Jones, Provider of the Year Sarah King, Partner of the Year Kim Beaver, Executive Director Lisa Hart and Community Service Award winners Dave Glasmire (front left) and Anna Glasmire.

Otterbein North Shore hands out awards Otterbein Homes President and CEO Jill Hreben recently presided over the State of Otterbein and the Otterbein North Shore award ceremony. She shared the positive report that Otterbein Homes remains solvent and continues to be A- rated by Standard and Poor’s, one of only 12 retirement communities nationwide to receive this endorsement. While the economy has had an impact on the non-profit organization, steady management and wise investment strategy by staff and board members has ensured that the company is strong throughout all of its locations in Ohio.

Robert W. Jones, a resident at Otterbein North Shore since 1998, received the Philanthropist of the Year award for his generous contribution toward the Benevolent Care program, which ensures that residents will never have to leave their home, if through no fault of their own, they outlive their financial resources. Jones’s wife, Betty, was on the original Otterbein North Shore board, and a street on campus is named after her. His gift was given in her memory. The President’s Outstanding Partner (employee) of the Year was Kim Beaver, a State Tested Nurse Aide, who works in the Jane Baker House. Lisa Hart, executive director, wrote the nomination and said Beaver is a problem-solver, leader, never rattled and patient. The Volunteer of the Year award went to resident Beth Infield, for her faithful delivery of resident mail, assisting in the Marketing office and helping in abundant other ways throughout the campus. Residents Anna and Dave Glasmire received the ComTHE BEST FOOD IN THE AREA munity Service award for their tireless volunteerism and community service, primarily centered on their church, but reaching out to the broader community. Seafaring vistas on display at PIB’s new Wyland Gallery Stephen Muldoon will be the first artist to unveil his works at Put-in-Bay’s new Wyland Gallery at 495 Catawba Ave. The Cleveland-born artist will be on hand daily and by appointment Thursday through Monday, May 26-30. During his Put-in-Bay show, Muldoon plans to unveil vibrant canvases depicting seafaring life and scenes of the area. In addition, he will meet gallery visitors and discuss his inspirations and techniques. Born into a family of artists, Muldoon demonstrates a passionate commitment to his work. His extensive travels in Europe and Central America have been a significant influence on his painting.

His love of water and life alongside it has inspired him to create compelling portraits of people ranging from small children to weathered seafarers, and their activities on and around the lakes and oceans. He is also known for his depictions of the classic vessels that travel America’s waterways. Muldoon prefers to leave his paintings untitled so viewers can interpret each one in their own way. Art lovers are invited to meet Muldoon, and discover his evocative images. For information, call the gallery at 419-285-2233 or visit www.wylandkw.com.

County’s only movie theater gets major upgrades

Stephen Muldoon’s painting of children is reminiscent of early days in the area. The artist will showcase his images May 26-30 at Put-in-Bay’s new Wyland Gallery.

Ottawa County’s only movie theater, located in Lakeside’s downtown business district, recently received major upgrades to enhance the movie experience. Area residents may attend two special preview weekend screenings of “The King’s Speech,” starring Academy Award-winner Colin Firth, at 8 p.m. May 13-14 and “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, at 8 p.m. May 20-21. There is no admission to enter the Lakeside gates for the two preview weekends. Special preview movie ticket prices are $5 for adults and youth. Orchestra Hall has been entertaining movie-goers for more than 90 years. Major upgrades in the Orchestra Hall movie theater include a rebuild of the movie projector, purchase of a new movie screen and installation of Dolby Stereo Sound. As a non-profit institution, Lakeside Association would not have been able to fund the upgrades without the support of community members who donated to the Lakeside Fund, an annual giving campaign.

children’s movie with an all-star cast will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday, May 27, and 3:30 and 8 p.m. May 28-29. Movie tickets are $6/adult and $3/youth (under 12). To view upcoming movies for the season, visit www.lakesideohio. com/arts. During Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30, and the Chautauqua summer season, June 18-Sept. 5, a gate pass is required to enter Lakeside but free movie passes are available at the gates. Enter the gatesa half-hour before the movie begins, and exit the gates a half-hour after the movie ends. The movie pass must be validated at the movie theater by the attendant at the time the movie tickets are purchased. Present the validated movie pass when exiting the Lakeside gates. Free parking is available off-site, or a car pass, which costs $7.50, is required. For information, visit www.lakesideohio.com or call 419-798-4461.

Lakeside worked with a consultant from Full Aperture Systems, James Bond. Movie equipment was sent from Chicago and the movie projectors were fully rebuilt. Bond, along with Lakeside volunteer Bill Shannon and Lakeside Orchestra Hall Manager Richard Thomas, replaced projector components, ran speaker cable and installed the Dolby Stereo Sound with three large speakers positioned behind the screen for optimal sound experience. “The new sound system will rock Orchestra Hall,” said Bond. “Guests will be amazed at the clarity of the sound.” To enhance the overall movie-viewing experience, a new custom-made movie screen was delivered to Lakeside in March. The crew mounted the new screen on casters, which allows the screen to move forward to the front edge of the stage for movies and back to the rear of the stage for other programs and presentations. Orchestra Hall will officially open for the summer season Memorial Day weekend with “Rio.” This animated

OAK HARBOR

Bank shows commitment to downtown The past few years have been tough for many downtown districts. With a struggling U.S. economy, many Oak Harbor merchants work hard to survive while others shut their doors for good. Take a stroll through the village and one will quickly notice empty buildings and deteriorating facades. One such building, once the prominent Oak Harbor Hotel, is currently undergoing a renovation. Armed with the backing from National Bank of Ohio, owners Peggy Dennis and Mark Kohn have taken on this endeavor to breathe new life into the historic Kuebeler building. It will be a few more months before renovations are complete and pa-

trons can begin enjoying this new restaurant and bar named “The Beekeeper.” In another attempt to revitalize downtown Oak Harbor, NBOH is leading an effort to offer lowinterest loans to assist Oak Harbor business owners in revitalizing the facades of their buildings. NBOH is committed to lending $25,000 to assist business owners in the cost of siding, window replacement, painting and other improvements. The funds are not meant for major infrastructure improvements, such as roofs or interior remodeling. The terms of the loan vary, so it is best to consult a commercial lender from NBOH for details on the

program. “As a community bank, we understand that providing financing is a key element in a successful downtown revitalization effort,” said Gary P. Macko, president and CEO. “NBOH is committed to assisting Oak Harbor businesses in renewing this downtown district and believes these investments can improve the quality of life in our community as well as make good business sense.” For information on these lowinterest loans, contact an NBOH commercial lender at 419-8985741 or visit the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce. For information on The Beekeeper, visit www.beekeeperoh.com.

Ohio tourism grows

Sharon Woodson, sales associate at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services Catawba Gold Office, has been awarded the Best of the Best Award along with Quality Service Recipient, Mega Million Dollar Producer, Listing and Sales Leader, President’s Circle, Champion’s Club and the National Sales Excellence Award.

The Tourism Division of the Ohio Department of Development recently released numbers from a study that shows the impact of the tourism industry on Ohio’s economy. The study shows overall growth of the tourism industry along with growth in the number of jobs sustained by tourism and the tax revenue generated by the industry. The Executive Director of the Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association Matt MacLaren was not surprised by the results. “Tourism plays a critical role in the economy of Ohio, even in a down year,” MacLaren said. “We are proud to provide research that shows what our industry can do for Ohio. Our state is extremely rich with opportunities to bring in individuals from other states to visit, as well as get Ohioans to explore

other parts of the state.” The study showed growth in three fundamental areas. The tourism industry, as a whole, grew by about $2.2 billion. It generated $100 million more in taxes. And there were 2,000 more jobs sustained by tourism over 2009. “Showing not only growth but the vital role tourism plays in Ohio’s economy will help generate excitement and development across Ohio,” MacLaren said. For two consecutive years, an independent organization has surveyed visitors to the state finding that for each dollar spent on tourism advertising, $13 in new money is returned in the form of state and local tax revenue. Financial Focus

‘Munis’ can still work for you — even in tough economic times

No matter where you live, the chances are good that a state or local government near you may be having some difficulty in balancing its budget. As a citizen, you’re probably concerned about how this situation will affect your life and your community. But as an investor, you may also wonder how this might affect any municipal bonds you own. Fortunately, the outlook might be brighter than you think. Of course, taken to the extreme, the financial challenges of some state and local governments could conceivably affect their ability to fulfill the payment obligations on their municipal bonds. But investment-grade quality municipal bond default rates historically have been very low, especially when compared

to those of corporate bonds. And municipalities are cutting spending, eliminating nonessential programs and, in some cases, raising taxes or fees. In short, they are taking steps that, while potentially painful to residents, are likely to help them continue making timely payments of interest and principal on their municipal bond obligations. Furthermore, municipalities must still fund various projects, and even one bond payment default could impact their future ability to borrow money in the form of new municipal bonds. So are munis right for you? The answer depends on your situation — your goals, need for investment income, current investment mix, risk tolerance and so on. But if you want to

receive interest payments that are exempt from federal taxes, you may well be interested in exploring municipal bonds. Keep in mind, though, that municipal bonds may be subject to state and local taxes and the alternative minimum tax (AMT). In addition, you’ll want to be familiar with “taxable-equivalent yield.” Typically, municipal bonds pay an interest rate that’s lower than those paid by taxable bonds. Since this interest is free from federal taxes, however, the rate may not be as low as it appears. The taxable-equivalent yield measures the rate you’d have to earn on a taxable bond to match the income from a taxexempt municipal bond. And the higher your tax bracket, the higher your taxable-equivalent

yield. Suppose that you’re in the 35% marginal tax bracket, and you are considering a tax-exempt municipal bond with a 3.33% yield. You simply divide 3.33% (0.0333 in decimal form) by 1 minus 0.35 (your tax bracket), which would give you 0.0512, or 5.12%. In this tax bracket, a muni with a 3.33% yield is equivalent to a taxable bond with a 5.12% yield. (This example is for illustration purposes only.) Keep in mind that, before investing in bonds, you should understand the risks involved, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. Bond investments are subject to interest rate risk such that when interest rates rise, the prices of bonds can decrease, and you can lose prin-

NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY

Sign up now to fish for a cure at Midway Marina Enjoy yourself and help people with multiple sclerosis by signing up for the MS Walleye Fishing Tournament on June 8. Get a group of six friends, customers or co-workers to fill a boat. The fully stocked boat will set sail from the Midway Marina in Port Clinton. Join more than 150 anglers as they participate in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 22nd annual Walleye Fishing Tournament. The anglers are treated to a continental breakfast before heading out to fish aboard a charter boat with a licensed charter boat captain at the helm. Each boat is stocked with food, beverages, bait and ice. When the participants return in the afternoon, they take part in a light dinner and get the chance to win some prizes while their catch is being cleaned and bagged for them to take home. Prizes are awarded for first-, second- and third-place for largest fish and stringer. The cost for a boat with six people is $1,200. Individual tickets are also available for $250. The money raised through the MS Walleye Tournament helps more than 20,000 Ohio residents living with multiple sclerosis. Funds are directed toward services like

Blood donations carry special meaning for Memorial Day While Memorial Day may signal the unofficial start of summer, the holiday’s true meaning is inescapable for those wishing to honor members of the United States Armed Forces. Making a blood donation through the American Red Cross is one way to pay homage to the service men and women who protect and defend our nation. Coming to donate blood before, during or after the long weekend can also help strengthen and maintain America’s blood supply for the summer season. “Your blood donation this time of year works as both a tribute and a testament to our nation’s armed forces,” said Annie Marckel, program manager communications for the Western Lake Erie Region of the American

Red Cross. “By rolling up your sleeve, you’ll honor those who dedicate their lives to others, and you’ll give the gift of life to help others in need.” Day in and day out, hospital patients need blood for emergency and ongoing care related to serious illness, accident or trauma. In fact, every 2 seconds, someone in America needs blood. But while that need is constant, the number of people donating blood isn’t. Blood donors may travel, start new routines or simply overlook donating blood — especially during the summer when people spend more time doing recreational or seasonal activities. To encourage summer donations, particularly around holidays, the Red Cross applies creative twists to giving

blood, including nationwide promotions such as Red Cross Racing. Now in its fourth season, this online rewards program recognizes frequent donations by offering racing-themed rewards for blood and platelet donation activities. The program also allows donors to earn and contribute points that benefit the Service to the Armed Forces network, a special Red Cross program that supports U.S. service members, their families and veterans. Donors can visit redcrossracing.com for details or to join. “We understand many people are simply motivated by the desire to honor others and to help save lives,” said Marckel. “Red Cross Racing is a way we can say thanks and bring some fun to giving blood.”

Magruder Hospital receives Gold Seal of Approval for quality, safety Magruder has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in hospitals. The accreditation award recognizes Magruder’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-ofthe-art standards. Magruder underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey in February. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated Magruder for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. “In achieving Joint Commission accreditation, Magruder has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients,” says Mark Pelletier, R.N., M.S., executive

director, Hospital Programs, Accreditation and Certification Services, The Joint Commission. “Accreditation is a voluntary process and I commend Magruder for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.” “With Joint Commission accreditation, we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis from the top down. Joint Commission accreditation provides us a framework to take our organization to the next level and helps create a culture of excellence,” says Mike Long, President & CEO of Magruder. The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address important functions relating to the care of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with health care experts, providers, measurement experts and patients. Magruder has earned this high standard of accreditation for more than 30 years. “Achieving Joint Commission accreditation, for our organization, is a major step toward maintaining excellence and continually improving the care we provide.” says Dr. Dan Cadigan, Chairman of Magruder’s Quality & Improvement and Utilization Review Committee.

Date with the Dentist

What you save by skipping the dentist will cost you later Times are economically tough. With a financial crunch, it is all too often professional dental care that a person delays, thinking of the expense and not the necessity. What you save now in the short run can cost you more in the long haul, both orally and systemically. Many people, with or without dental benefits, think they cannot afford dental care. In reality, one cannot afford to ignore dental problems. The end result is a potentially dangerous effect on one’s health; which itself can be very expensive. Financially difficult times necessitate that we think things through and get our priorities straight. Don’t put off until tomorrow what should be treated today. Delaying preventive care or treatment of dental problems can cost much more in both dollars and health. Missing dental cleanings can lead to gingivitis, periodontitis (gum disease), and tooth decay. These problems are much less dangerous, and less expensive, when signs are detected early by a dental exam. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that, when untreated, progresses with bone shrinkage and tooth loss. It does this by affecting the gums and jawbone; the structures which hold your teeth in place. Seventy-five percent of Americans have some form of gum disease, which affects the health of the entire body; gum infections and inflammation have been scientifically linked to heart disease, strokes, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, pneumonia, and more. Hundreds of years ago, people usually died from such tooth infections. Since then, antibiotics have been developed and dental care has been modernized, but a person may still die if a serious infection is ignored. This is not an area where one should cut costs. Broken and decayed teeth need to be examined. When decay reaches the nerve of a tooth, it can cause a toothache or abscess. Correcting this situation requires an expensive and dreaded root canal and crown (cap) restoration, or tooth extraction. Sometimes the tooth cannot be fixed due to the amount of decay or severity of a fracture, and the only choice is to remove the tooth. Missing teeth need to be replaced with an implant, bridge, or removable partial denture to prevent remaining teeth from shifting, and to maintain proper chewing and digestion. It is unwise to put off more involved treatment because it will only get worse, more expensive, and may be detrimental to your health. Each tooth is important; the back teeth are grinders; the front teeth are cutters. When back teeth are missing, a person grinds their food with the front teeth, which will wear down at a rapid rate, break, or loosen. Pockets can form in the gums that harbor bacteria (periodontal infections) when teeth drift and tip; TMJ problems, malnutrition, and poor digestion can result, as well as sensitivity of the teeth and a collapse of muscular support of the lips and face. A person may experience poor digestion and a prematurely aged appearance. Yeast infections might form in the creased corners of the lips due to the pooling of saliva. The mouth is the first organ of digestion and should be treated as such. The smile is a bonus. Also, don’t cut back on dental care during pregnancy. This is a very important time to visit the dentist for preventative maintenance. Hormones increase the possibility of gingivitis. This gum inflammation can raise the chance of low birth weight babies or preterm deliveries. What you save is just not worth the risks. All of these potential outcomes are much more expensive than a preventive appointment or perhaps a simple filling early on. It is comparable to changing the oil in your car to prevent the early failure of an expensive engine. Prevention and maintenance are the best medicine. It is time to prioritize our spending. People spend the same amount annually on pet food as dental care, $50 billion a year. $300 billion is spent on legal gambling. More than $100 billion is spent on hair care products per year, but only $2 billion is spent on dental products. Beautiful hair has little value without a beautiful smile. Remember, a healthy smile does a body good. nnn Dr. Lowe is a graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine with over 25 years experience in dentistry. She practices at 327 Buckeye Blvd., Port Clinton, Ohio.
