The design process is still under way for the new middle school and additions and renovations to Bataan Memorial Elementary School. Groundbreaking ceremonies involving the entire community will be scheduled for the new buildings in early 2011 once the bidding process is complete.

Reminders of home

I received a nice note from Dean Rothaar who received a clipping from his sister penned by R.F. Brough from the Florida Times-Union. The clipping talked about growing up in Port Clinton and the sacrifice made by Tank Company C in the early days of World War II in the Philippines. R.F. graduated from PCHS in 1955 and was honored to play taps twice at special Memorial Day ceremonies. Then he wrote: “Little did I know then that I would one day complete 28 years of U.S. Naval service and lead prayer at least twice in Memorial Day tributes.” nnn

By DIANNE ROZAK The first quarter of the year was very eventful in Danbury Township. For the past two years we have been researching and evaluating the potential for building a new administrative complex to house all of our departments. A shift in focus occurred after we had an opportunity to view the former Garden Path landscaping building that was up for sale on Bridge Road. We purchased this five-year old building for $375,000. It encompasses 3 acres and is located across the street from the 15 acres the township currently owns. The front part of the building will be remodeled to accommodate a new police station which will provide excellent visibility for the department. The large bays in the rear of the building will be utilized for storage of seasonal maintenance equipment. We are reviewing the potential for relocating recycling and possibly township clean-up to this new site. Any relocation of services would be announced in township newsletters and press releases well in advance of changes being made. Once the police station is completed, we will move forward with retrofitting our current township hall to make the facility ADA accessible. Administrative, zoning and maintenance department employees will remain at our building on Port Clinton Eastern Road as will the township meeting room. New dugouts and a batting cage have been installed at the township athletic complex. These new amenities will be greatly welcomed by the numerous teams who use these ball fields. Thanks are extended to the Natural Wave Salon and Firelands 4-H Club for coordinating recent cleanups at Meadow-

brook Marsh. The Natural Wave also provided a new bench for the park. We greatly appreciate the efforts made by these entities. The park is being used regularly by residents and visitors. It is open year-round from dawn until dusk. Shortly, a new ADA parking area and connecting trail will be installed. This will provide full ADA accessibility to nearly 3,000 feet of paved multipurpose trails and the pond side observation deck. The township recently received an award from the Bureau of Worker’s Compensation for outstanding safety performance. This 100 percent rating was given for being injury-free during 2009. The township is a member of the Ottawa County Safety Council. We conduct regular meetings with our employee safety team and also provide safety workshops for all employees. Also new this quarter is the implementation of Tasers for our police officers. This valuable tool provides our officers with a critical option in between the use of pepper spray and deadly force. All officers have been fully trained in the use of this new equipment. Zoning permits continue to be on the rise as well as the number of inquiries from residents, Realtors and builders. The township was recently favorably upheld in the Ottawa County Common Pleas court on three zoning cases. Both our Board of Zoning Appeals and the Zoning Commission have attended recent training on current topics affecting their duties. Lastly, many thanks are extended to our maintenance staff for planting flower seeds at Sackett Cemetery. This task is usually handled by several citizen volunteers but the weather did not co-

Rosalie Mantkowski Died June 4, 2010 HURON — Rosalie K. (Boysen) Mantkowski (age 67) passed peacefully Friday, June 4, at 4:27 p.m. with family and friends in attendance after a lengthy illness. Rosalie was a graduate of Port Clinton High School Class of 1960, belonged to Cochran’s Majorettes, and was an upstanding member of the Huron Eagles No. 2875. She was an avid reader and gardener. She also was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, devoted to friends and family. She was always there to help, whatever the need. She was often a sought after guest at gatherings, not only for her sparkling personality and great sense of humor, but also for her famous macaroni salad. She is survived by her four sons, Michael (wife Renee), David, Stephen (wife Vicki), and Christopher; grandchildren Justin, Ashlyn, and Alex; her sister, MaryAnne (husband Roger) Mooney; sister-in-law, Joan (Mantkowski) (husband Larry) Butler; nieces and nephews. Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Lydia “Dolly” (Pluckhorn) Boysen; and her husband, James T. Mantkowski. Filmmaker holding all-day bullying seminar School bullying has often been regarded as just a part of growing up; something that happens to a handful of unpopular kids. Unfortunately, history tells us something quite different: school bullying has become an epidemic with consequences ranging from unbalanced adulthoods, youth suicides and murder. In nearly all school and campus shootings, it is reported by peers that the young shooter was a victim of torment and bullying. While some believe that the problem has been around too long to be significantly lessened, it has been proven that awareness and commonsense strategies have a major and positive effect on the bullying problem.

National speaker and award-winning educational filmmaker Thomas Brown decided in 1991 that he wanted to address the school bullying problem. First, with the assistance of his friends, he made a little film called “Broken Toy” about a bullied kid and what happens to his “tormentors” when their behavior toward this boy almost ends up in a tragedy. The film made an immediate impression on educators and children in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Within a few months after release, Brown and his program The Broken Toy Project, found himself speaking in schools throughout the United States and Canada, as well as appearing on nu-

merous American and Canadian news and talk shows. Nearly two decades after creating “Broken Toy,” Thomas has created 20 additional educational films, including six with his Port Clinton-based educational production company Closer Look Films. In addition to films on school bullying, Brown’s films have also covered bullying on the school bus, kids with Asperger’s and autism who are bullied, the fatal choking game, underage drinking parties, youth suicide, hazing, the importance of wearing bike helmets and child abduction. On Saturday Aug. 7, Brown will present his anti-bullying awareness program “The Broken Toy Project” for any interested

adult at Magruder Hospital, Conference Room A, for a seminar. The all-day event is “You will be moved, angered, enlightened and ready to make a difference in the lives of your own and others children, and you will learn common-sense strategies for home and the classroom that will help you reach that goal,” Brown said. Happiest, silliest and more from Cedar Point It’s Friday, June 11, and I’m sitting in the picnic area at Cedar Point Amusement Park. I have not been in this park for years but today I’m helping with a group of youth and their families who are here with the United Methodist Church for our conference’s Youth Day. Three churches are with our group: Port Clinton Trinity, Republic Trinity and Bloomville. Counting all adults, children and youth there are about 49 of us. Everyone had to bring a packed lunch. Beverages were provided by one of the churches. And bags of snacks circulated around, too. As I begin writing, lunch is finished and I’m now keeping watch over the picnic supplies, jackets, coolers and I don’t know what else that are gathered on a picnic table. It seems like a great time to write Beacon Bits. Here are some things I have seen: • The happiest: Kids high fiving their dads when their dads measured them up against the painted boards with height markings and finding that, “I can ride everything this year!” • The silliest (in my opinion, anyway): Elderly women in skimpy outfits with tattoos in unlikely places. • The most carefree: The littlest kids running and jumping for joy. • The most ill-advised: Throwing food to the seagulls that lurk around and then make nuisances of themselves. • The spunkiest: Melissa McBride, of Catawba Island, making the day with the help of a wheelchair after sustaining a painful broken toe only yesterday.

• A youth advisor’s nightmare: Asking a teenage boy to say the table grace resulting in “Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub, Yay God.” That got laughter from the kids, a scowl from the advisor and seemed to herald permission to start eating because the kids in that group dug right in. • The strangest comment: A tall stately woman was walking along outside the picnic pavilion and a bird (a grackle, maybe) darted out from the covered area and swooped in front of her. She stopped walking, spoke to herself, and said “I’m not a bird.” I’m not kidding. That’s what she said. “I’m not a bird.” • And here is something I’ve never seen before and firmly believe I will never try. Some guy brought a huge grill and began cooking big hamburger patties at about 10 a.m.! Then, instead of keeping these hot somehow, he put them into sandwich buns and sealed the “finished product” into the bags that the buns had come in. He kept them on the table for a couple of hours until his large group arrived to eat. It seemed to me as if the hamburgers would be cold and the buns would be soggy. Maybe he knew what he was doing. But I doubt it. • The most prevalent sight at Cedar Point: Girls wearing very short, cut-off jeans and boys wearing big ugly high top tennis shoes in strange colors. Purple seemed to be popular. Well, enough of that. I’ve seen a lot and I haven’t even been inside the gates yet. But this is a day for the youth and I’ve got the easy job of watching their belongings while they have fun. nnn

Something of interest to people of all ages will be the visit of the U.S. Brig Niagara, a replica of a ship in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Here are some ways to lower your electric bill in summer gleaned from several sources: • Turn your lights off whenever possible. Summer is a good time to use less lighting because of the longer hours of daylight. (And we’re coming up on the longest “day” of the year — June 21.) And turn off all electric-using toys, appliances, computers when you’re not actually using them. • Set the thermostat on your air conditioner at the warmest temperature you can tolerate and then don’t touch it. • Turn on your ceiling fans. They’ll help you keep cool and you won’t need to use your air conditioner as much as you would otherwise. • Other fans, such as floor fans, etc, will also help to keep you cool. (I personally like the fans that make very little noise. And, if you direct them at places where you spend time, such as in front of the kitchen sink or toward your favorite lounging chair, you’ll get good benefits from them). A small fan at your desk will keep you cool and another in the bathroom gets towels and washcloths dry fairly quickly. • As always, find where household air is escaping, such as around doors and windows. The Ottawa County Community Foundation is a real success story. It was formed in September 1999 and a Code of Regulations for the organization was adopted by November of that year. The first annual meeting was held in January 2000 and new trustees were elected. They were Earl Johnson, Darrell Opfer, Jack Schiller, John Blatt and Dave Martin. The first two funds established were the John Blatt, Mayor of Put-in-Bay scholarship fund and the Ida Rupp Library Endowment Fund. The foundation has grown quickly and today has 53 funds with an approximate value of $2,780,000. The Toledo Community Foundation is “parent” to the local group and invests local funds with its own,

Recently I was shopping at a garage sale and I found a tape of Connie Francis singing some of her wonderful hits songs from many decades ago. I bought it and listened to it. This popular singer had a powerful, emotional voice and when she sang a great song, it was almost impossible not to listen to her with nearly spell-bound attention. I looked up some information about Connie Francis. She was one of the truly great performers. Born into an Italian family, her name was Concetta Franconero. Her father may have been a music teacher (not sure) and he was her career mentor. Her father surely had an impact on her early career and personal life. She played the accordion but later in life was sorry she had not studied piano instead. Her first 10 singles did not do well. But then, at her “last” recording session Connie Francis sang an older song, “Who’s Sorry Now?” at the suggestion of her father. It took off and launched her global career. She began searching for another song and found “Stupid Cupid,” written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. “Cupid” was an instant success and Sedaka and Greenfield wrote many of her subsequent songs, including the immensely popular (and powerfully sung), “Where the Boys Are.” Francis sang in Las Vegas and on television specials. Her early career spanned the late ’50s and most of the ’60s. Then she took a few years off before resuming her work. She has written two autobiographies. The second, “Who’s Sorry Now?” was a New York Times bestseller. A footnote: Connie Francis fell in love with singer Bobby Darin when she was young and her father forced them apart. The two young adults had met when he was writing songs and actually before his own great singing career took off. Connie’s father did not approve of the relationship. When he learned that Darin was planning to elope with his daughter, the father ran Darin off with a gun. Connie later said that when she heard that Bobby Darin had married starlet Sandra Dee, she wanted to die. And much later she wrote that not marrying Bobby Darin was the “biggest mistake” of her life. She was later married four times with all four marriages ending in divorce.

I am not writing to complain about our streets, which is no longer just bad, but has become shameful, disgusting and dangerous. Nor am I writing to complain about our outrageous water and sewer bills, which I believe will even be higher in the near future. And I am not even going to mention Lakeview Park, where an unbelievable amount of money is being spent on a “small masonry building,” where the tourist can wash the sand off their feet. The fact is I am not writing to complain about anything, or anyone, I am writing to give praise and thank yous to some of Port Clinton’s finest citizens. First of all I would like to thank two ex-councilmen who gave years of their time, trying against all odds, to make Port Clinton a better place to live. These gentlemen were not “bobbleheads, or followers,” they were leaders, who did their own thinking — and they always kept the citizens informed on what was going on. I truly believe that Dr. Chapman and Jeff Morgan were the best thing that happened to our administration in last 50 years. I know they will be missed but I do not believe they will ever be replaced. I would also like to thank the many people who ask my friends, my family members and myself why I no longer write letters to the editor, and will I again be doing so. A little more than a year ago I lost someone who I miss more than I can put into words, and since then nothing seems important. I see no reason to write anymore letters, because I believe Port Clinton has finally become a “Tourist Town.” A few years ago I told you what an old business man told me back in 1939, what makes a tourist town — he said “a tourist town is a town where the business people gets the dollars, the workers get the pennies, and the residents gets the shaft.” Now tell me, citizens, is Port Clinton a tourist town or isn’t it? Local women attend Memory Day at State Capital COLUMBUS — In a display of public solidarity and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, an estimated 250 Alzheimer’s advocates from across the state participated in the 12th annual Memory Day at the Ohio Statehouse on Tuesday, April 13. Memory Day provides families, caregivers and those affected by Alzheimer’s disease the opportunity to meet face-to-face with their elected officials to discuss the unique challenges associated with caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Among them were Marian Blevins, of Port Clinton, and Jody Andres, of Sandusky, who had the opportunity to speak with Sen. Mark Wagoner (2nd district), Rep. Jay P. Goyle (Dist. 73) and Rep. Dennis Mur-

ray (Dist. 80) to advocate on behalf of persons with Alzheimer’s. Andres is the retention and recruitment coordinator for Home Instead Senior Care’s Port Clinton office, a non-medical provider of companionship, home helper and respite services. Her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years ago. Andres was able to share her professional experiences in working with the senior population and knowledge of the disease through Home Instead Senior Care’s Alzheimer’s training program. Andres is in a unique position to speak with the legislators because of her professional knowledge and her personal situation with her mother’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Blevins has been a caregiver to her hus-

band since his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She has spent many hours finding all the information she can to assist in his daily life. Blevins was able to give the legislators a first-hand account of the trials that family caregivers face on a day-to-day basis. Blevins recently received first place in an essay contest sponsored by Caring Today magazine which provided her with respite services from Home Instead Senior Care. She wrote about how she had adapted her life style to meet the needs of her husband’s Al-

“I encourage everyone to find their niche, their gift and to use it to give back,” said Linda Smith, who recently penned the first children’s book written exclusively with a Lakeside focus. “Lakeside Rascals” is the story of a squirrel and a raccoon and the mischief they created one day around Lakeside. Proceeds from the book will be used to support the Rhine Center, the arts and crafts learning station in Lakeside. Smith, an Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community gift shop volunteer, will be signing copies of

her book at the retirement community from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 18. Otterbein is located at 9400 North Shore Boulevard. The public is welcome. Smith wrote a story about and for each of her five grandchildren when they were born, which became a gift to them when they were 2 years old. She has eight additional children’s stories that may be published. A retired teacher and reading specialist, Smith and her husband, Bill, decided to retire to the Lakeside-Marblehead area because they had always vaca-

tioned in the area and they like being around people of all ages. The book illustrator is Jenny Campbell, who runs a thriving cartooning business in Chagrin Falls. She has illustrated 12 children’s books. In 2002 she was approached by John Gibel to do a comic strip about seniors and they created what is now the nationally syndicated comic strip Flo and Friends — all about aging with an attitude. Docents learn roles for summer The Wolcott Keeper’s House, 9999 E. Bayshore Road, Marblehead, recently prepared volunteers to greet summer visitors with an annual docent training and breakfast. Veteran docents brought returning docents and newcomers up to date in the lore of Benajah Wolcott and his family, and their life as farmers and lighthouse keepers in the 1820s Ohio frontier. Nearly two dozen men and women volunteer to welcome summer visitors to the 1820s stone home of the Marblehead Lighthouse’s first keepers, and to the adjacent gift shop and museum. Afterwards they were treated to a brunch catered by Avery’s. The house, cemetery and gift shop/ museum will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Sept. 3 and the second Saturdays of each month through October.

An informational meeting on the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, the Emergency Watershed Protection Floodplain Easement Program or the Farm and Ranch Land Protection Program is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 22. As a producer or landowner, you may qualify for funding through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The meeting will be held at Luckey Farmers main office, 1200 W. Main St., Woodville. EQIP is primarily for agricultural

producers with a natural resource issue, such as soil erosion. WHIP is for landowners who want to create or restore wildlife habitat, or combat invasive species, on their land. FRPP is for farmers who want to keep their land in agricultural production by placing a conservation easement on the property. The EWPP-FPE is for landowners who have floodplain lands that have been impaired by flooding within the last 12 months or that have a history of repeated flooding (flooded at least twice in the past

10 years). A conservation easement will be place on the floodplain and the land restored to its’ original state. Sign-up for GLRI funding is currently taking place until July 1. Both financial and technical assistance is available for these programs using GLRI funding. Ohio has $6.4 million for landowners with land in the priority watersheds of the Lake Erie Watershed for 2010. book. This program is offered to residents or siblings of residents residing in Ottawa County. The next program will be on Tuesday, June 22. The classes are available for children in grades two to five; a parent or guardian must be present for this program. Tombstone mystery solved A Civil War tombstone in the Ottawa County Historical Museum recently brought together members of the Bovia family from Toledo and Port Clinton. When the Toledo branch of the Bovias learned of the whereabouts of the Civil War tombstone of Francis Bovia, they called the museum to find out how it came to be on display there. Francis Bovia fought in Company G of the Ohio 100th Infantry during the Civil War, was wounded in the wrist, and died in 1878 of tuberculosis contracted during the Civil War. The Bovias’ call resulted in a family get-together at the museum with Dick Ward and his wife Elsie Bovia Ward, who had donated the tombstone to the museum years ago. Elsie had received the nearly illegible tombstone

Debbie Garrard. A gun salute by the honor guard Larry Twarek, Paul Hallier and Dan Monak Sr. was followed by Earl Davis with the sound of taps as Camille Sobolewski captured the moment. The evening was not complete until a CD was played and the voice of Penn Kemp filled the canteen, reminiscent of past remembrances of Memorial Day.

McCallum Gallery artist to unveil new painting Saturday Donald Boncela, a nationally known fine art painter, will be unveiling his latest painting — “N 41. 34. 30. W 82. 51. 31. Homeward Bound” — during the scheduled festivities Saturday, June 19, at the McCallum Gallery, 724 W. Main, Marblehead. Boncela’s works of art are best described utilizing a French term, Trompe L’oeil — a painting style that gives the illusion of reality. This painting is a classic example of the artist’s attention to execution and detail. Boncela was an instructor of painting techniques and portrait drawing at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1975-1982.

He also instructed painting techniques and portrait drawing for the “Old Masters Reproductions Classes” at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1999-2004. The unveiling of the painting will take place during The Art of it All, a scheduled event from 1 to 10 p.m. The event includes a Grammy Award-winning jazz and blues band, DBC from Cleveland. In September, Emily Wadsworth joined Stein Hospice as a nurse at the inpatient care center. Friends worried that working at a hospice center might be difficult for Emily, whose cancer was in remission. “Because I have cancer, I should be there,” the 61-year-old Clyde nurse told them. Emily’s career at Stein was brief, but her impact was vast. She served patients and families with compassion and dedication, never satisfied until all their questions were answered. When Emily’s cancer returned and she was no longer able to work, she shifted her attention to other Stein projects. This spring she laid the groundwork for Emily’s Library. A room at the care center will soon hold books, recordings and computers to help educate and comfort patients and families. “I think one of the best gifts you can give a family is the understanding of what is happening,” she explained. Emily joined a Stein committee that was planning a caregiver conference so she could share her experiences from both sides of the bed. And in an effort to further reach out to others, she asked to be part of Stein’s advertising campaign. Emily wasn’t able to complete all her projects. She died April 8 at the care center, receiving the kind of care she once delivered. Stein Hospice helped Emily deal with her death on her terms.

More than 150 take part in PCMS 5K run/walk

PCMS Student Nathan Stubblefield was the first to complete the PCMS Fitness Club 5K Run/ Walk on June 1. Stubblefield finished in 21:12.5.

Port Clinton Middle School students, as well as staff and some parents, completed a 5K run/walk June 1. The event was the final one for the successful PCMS Fitness Club program coordinated by Angela Reineck, school nurse, and Jenifer Dackermann, physical education teacher. PCMS Fitness Club members completed an eight-week training for 5K including strength and cross training. Throughout the program, several guest speakers visited practices to talk to the club members about various topics regarding health and nutrition. The program was funded by a $500 grant from the Ohio Action for Health Kids Zone 1 Coalition to be used for improving the health status of children in Northwest Ohio schools. Ohio Action for Healthy Kids is a nonprofit national and statewide initiative dedicated to improving health and academic performance of children through better nutrition and physical activity in schools. Other 5K Run/Walk sponsors included: Bassetts Market; Community Market; Raymond Colavinceizo, DDS; Magruder Hospital;

Laundromat customers are welcome to use free Wi-Fi, various game machines, Coca-Cola vending machine or browse through a selection of magazines. For customer convenience, there is a drop-off parking zone located in the front of the building, as well as five spaces in the rear for laundromat customers only. An attendant will be on hand throughout the day for assistance with the machines. Also, for the local Marblehead and surrounding area, a two-hour gate pass is available during the season at all gates. The pass must be stamped by the laundromat attendant in order to exit Lakeside. However, last year, the Lakeside Laundromat opportunity became available. With Tomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s background experience in operating the family bowling business for 25 years and owning a commercial cleaning business for 15 years, he decided to revive the Lakeside Laundromat. Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit going up in area LAKESIDE — Experience the unique symbolism of fences and how they are entwined with politics, industry and daily life at Between Fences, the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street traveling exhibit, featured at Lakeside’s historic Hoover Auditorium from June 20-July 10. Between Fences opens Sunday, June 20, with a special slide presentation of Lakeside fences by the Lakeside Heritage Society in the Fountain Inn Green Room from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Brief remarks will follow on the steps of Hoover Auditorium at 3 p.m. The exhibit will be open 7:30 to

8:15 p.m. Monday through Saturday prior to Hoover Auditorium nightly performances, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, except July 4. Admission to the grounds requires a gate pass. Free 90-minute shopping/dining passes are available at the gate and can be validated by the exhibit docent, allowing participation at no cost. An auto pass is required to drive in Lakeside. Visit www.lakesideohio.com for details. Lakeside is one of eight communities in Ohio to host the exhibit, and the final stop on the

exhibit’s 10-month tour. “Given its rich history of educational programming, Lakeside is a natural to host this exhibit. Between Fences educates us all on what fences say about our society and our communities,” said Kevin Sibbring, president/CEO of the Lakeside Association. “We are very fortunate to introduce this excellent exhibit as part of our 2010 Chautauqua program, providing thousands of our residents and guests with a unique perspective on American history.” Throughout the years, various reasons have existed for building fences, including establishing

property lines, ensuring safety and security and serving as decoration. Using photographs, tools, publications, product literature, journals, postcards and posters strategically placed between fences, the exhibit illustrates how and why we build fences and how these boundaries reflect us as individuals and communities. Displays and docents prompt discussion and participants are encouraged to converse with each other about the themes and role of fences in American society. Special youth exhibit tours (ages 8-12) will be held 2-3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday during

the exhibit, with an opportunity to decorate a paper picket or draw a fence picture to hang in Hoover Auditorium. There is no cost to participate. Due to limited space, pre-registration is required at the C. Kirk Rhein, Jr. Center for the Living Arts on the Sunday prior from 1-3 p.m. Lakeside hosts the Museum on Main Street exhibit organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Ohio Humanities Council and the Lakeside Association. ‘Summer entertainment lineup is the best around’ “You are always guaranteed to be greeted when you arrive and treated like family while you are here,” said Nick Bousliman, about his business that has been open for 19 years now. Nick’s Roadhouse, more casually known as Nick’s, started in spring of 1991 and has been open to tourists and locals ever since. The bar, located at 124 Buckeye Blvd., Port Clinton, is open 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through

Not only does Nick’s use a searchlight to grab people’s attention, but it also has entertainment on the weekends. “Our summer entertainment lineup is the best around with bands ranging from The Menus, The Breakfast Club, The Spazmatics, Allie, Glasgow Kiss, Rutherford County and Tricky Dick and the Cover-Ups,” said Bousliman. Every Thursday night, Nick’s offers karaoke with

the “Island Idol Show,” hosted by Richie and Ron Howard from The Cruisin’ band. Nick’s offers happy hour daily at 3 p.m. and Monday’s it offers a half-pound burger and steak fries at $3.99 and Tuesday is all-you-
