Fun for the Fourth Activities planned throughout the county for holiday

The scope of Independence Day was not lost John Adams. Even a day after completion of the Declaration of Independence he wrote: “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” Using Adam’s words as a template, the Port Clinton Area 4th of July Planning Committee is pleased to announce a full slate of events for the 4th of July. • 3:30 p.m. — Ice Cream Social: The ladies and gentlemen of the Port Clinton Senior Center will again host this event on the Ottawa County Courthouse lawn in conjunction with the Community Band Concert and Firecracker Cutie Contest. Donations will be accepted for the ice cream and toppings. • 4 p.m. — Community Band Concert: The sounds of the season and much more will be heard echoing through Port Clinton. The Community Band will have a free concert on the lawn of the Ottawa County Courthouse. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy. • 6 p.m. — Little Mr. and Miss Firecracker Cutie Contest: Open to ages 0-7 years old. Speakers will be set up in Waterworks Park to broadcast the soundtrack to the fireworks. Volunteers will be canvassing the crowd requesting donations to support next year’s event. Davis Besse back online The Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station located west of Port Clinton and north of Oak Harbor went back online early Tuesday morning and is back creating electricity. The plant had been shut down for nearly four months for refueling and repairing cracks in nozzles that fed into the reactor head. Davis-Besse officials have agreed to operate the plant for only 14 months before their next planned re-fueling shutdown to tend to the problems with the nozzles. During the re-fueling, engineers made more than 280 manual examinations of the corrosion that appeared on the reactor lid. On March 12 they identified indications of boron deposits indicative of leaks in the nozzles. The reactor head has 69 nozzles, and 24 of them were identified for modification. However, First Energy engineers stated emphatically that the structural integrity of the reactor head was not compromised. At a public hearing several weeks ago Ken Byrd, Manager of Design Engineering, said the defective nozzles had been rewelded and moved to a region with no primary water stress corrosion cracking and that a new weld material was used that is resistant to degradation. Byrd said that the new welds should last 25 years, long after the scheduled time for the reactor head to be replaced. The modifications are intended to reduce the core temperature in the reactor by 5-8 degrees, lessening the problem. However, the leaking will be closely watched and the plant could be shut down earlier than the scheduled 14 months.

Magruder CEO resigns

Oak Harbor The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating our independence on Saturday, July 3, along the Portage River, in downtown Oak Harbor. The Chamber “Family Festivities” will begin at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies followed by entertainment by Class A Dance Studio and music by Legacy II. This year the winner of the Village Anniversary T-shirt contest will be announced. No coolers will be allowed, all beverages must be purchased at the event. Get in on the 50/50 raffle the Chamber will be holding this year. Tickets can be purchased from chamber volunteers before the fireworks. Glow necklaces will also be available for purchase this year.

Drawing for the 50/50 will take place right before the fireworks display. The Apple Festival Royalty will have the famous “Duck Race” at 8 p.m. on the Portage River. Watch as the excitement builds to see if your duck is a lucky prize winner. Paul Druckenmiller, chairman of Magruder Hospital’s Board of Trustees, announced that the board accepted the resignation of President and CEO Cliff Harmon, who is moving on to pursue other interests. Michael Long, Magruder Hospital’s Senior Vice-President, who has held several leadership positions at the hospital for 20 years, has been appointed as Magruder’s interim President. HARMON “We as an executive committee, accepted Cliff ’s resignation with regrets,” said Druckenmiller. “Cliff is a fine man and has brought many good leadership development ideas to the hospital. He has decided there are other opportunities he wishes to pursue, and we respect his decision. The board wishes Cliff well.” Harmon took the helm of Magruder Hospital as president and CEO in June of 2007 when Dave Norwine retired after 14 years as the hospital’s President and CEO.

BP spill

Protesting the BP oil spill, Eric Britton, an environmentalist Perrysburg lawyer, regurgitated the idiotic mantra “we’ve been driven by our addiction to oil.” Does he really think that consumers would not purchase another product if it were more efficient, more economical and profitable for the producer? If it weren’t for the radical environmentalists and the crony capitalism between government and energy producers and government intervention preventing innovation in the free market we would have alternatives or at least be cleaning up oil on the ground in Wyoming or Montana instead of a mile deep in the gulf. BP should be held responsible for shortchanging safety warning, but to turn over their $20 billion to our politicians in Washington would be a huge mistake. The real question regarding this spill is why isn’t the mainstream media covering the huge flow of money between billionaire and New York World Order pimp George Soros, president Obama to Petro

Brazil and how that sets up Petro Brazil to take over the oil companies who own the 33 offshore wells that will go under after they lose almost $17 million per day per platform for the length of the ban. Oops! I forget. It’s the mainstream media. Jim Boehm

Question: When does a town-hall meeting become a mob? Answer: When leaders who by their silence allow unruly behavior. Shouts at the recent Town Hall meeting sponsored by Congressman Latta, to “treat Democrats as enemies,” “kill them” and “shoot him in the face” (referring to the President) are unruly mob behavior, not responsible constituent suggestions. Most Republican leaders I respect and worked with, including his father, would have rejected such suggestions as extremist, outof-place and inappropriate at any public forum. By his earlier silence, Latta encouraged the more outrageous remarks and behavior. The “win-at-all-costs” attitude expressed at the meeting is patently antiAmerican and threatens the stability of our country and economic recovery. Unfortunately the same attitude prevails among most minority congresspersons who have vowed to use every means possible to “bring down” a lawfully elected President. Under this strategy, what happens to constituents with real problems, like the unemployed tool and die maker? They are overlooked because of political expedience and appeals for the votes of the ill-informed. Rehashing the obvious personal, partisan and self-serving rhetoric of Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh and deliberate lies presented as “news” on Fox do nothing to address real issues. What is needed are positive suggestions on how to reverse policies that have nearly

destroyed the middle class in this country over the past 30 years. We need to recognize that “free trade” has benefitted only transnational corporations like BP and has devastated our manufacturing base, jobs and economy. Deregulation has transferred wealth into the hands of large political contributors creating socialism for the super-rich and capitalism for the rest. The role of a leader is to educate, as well as to listen. It’s time to stop diverting attention from real issues and start governing instead of playing political games with our future. Be safe on the Fourth of July

The celebration of Independence Day, the observation of our country’s freedom from the rule of Great Britain, is this weekend, Sunday, July 4. Fireworks are slated in many communities. The “Prevent Blindness America” society has sent out a notice asking that people avoid using personal fireworks. The notice says that approximately 5,000 Americans went to hospital emergency rooms in 2008 as a direct result of injuries from fireworks. About 1,000 of them were eye injuries. These included contusions, lacerations, debris in the eye and burns. Children under age 15 accounted for 40 percent of the total injuries. So, it’s obvious that children can really be at risk on this holiday weekend. Even fireworks approved for personal use may be dangerous. And fireworks actually injure bystanders more often than they injure the person using them. Families are, therefore, urged to attend only fireworks displays conducted by professionals. The Society suggests some alternate activities for families to use with youngsters to have fun. Some of them are paraphrased (and supplemented) here: • Wrap flashlights in colored cellophane and let the kids play with them outdoors in a safe area after dark. • Glo-sticks, glo-ropes and glo-jewelry are fun for kids at night. • Use glow-in-the-dark paint to decorate T-shirts and hats. Adding glitter will make them sparkle. • Create noisemakers by banging wooden spoons on pots or pans. Create a marching band with horns, whistles, bells or commercially produced noisemakers. And if your kids like popping sounds — let them pop the bubble wrap used for packaging. • In the kitchen, kids can celebrate the holiday by making fun desserts. Artificial whipped cream with an addition of strawberries and blueberries makes an easy-tofix dessert in our nation’s patriotic red, white and blue colors. • Use hypo-allergenic paint to “design”

your child’s face. Adults should apply it, carefully following the instructions, and remove it using cold cream or eye makeup remover. Call 1-800-331-2020 for a Safe Summer Celebration brochure. nnn

I’m trying to think of some “old-time” activities to use with a group of young people. Some that have come to mind are playing croquet or checkers, making homemade ice cream, making homemade lemonade, and eating old-fashioned sugar cookies or molasses cookies. I think that everything planted in my garden is out of the ground and “showing green.” There has been so much rain and heat that growing conditions have been good. Farm crops, in general, look great. But there are still some fields that farmers have not been able to plant because they have remained too wet. nnn

This past weekend was stiflingly hot. The thermometer in my car said 92 degrees for most of Sunday afternoon while some weather channels reported that the temperature was even higher — in the mid90s. I don’t do well in that kind of heat. I was looking for an easy chair in an airconditioned place or for somebody with a swimming pool willing to have a guest floating around in it! On Sunday afternoon it was easy to identify houses that have swimming pools. They were the ones that had lots of cars around them! When I got home I loved the cool air inside the house and turned on several fans to keep it moving around. nnn

It’s been interesting to watch the restoration and reconstruction of the historic porch and portico on the very large house (in my memory always called the True mansion) at the corner of Perry and Fulton Streets, Port Clinton. I believe that it is owned by Jeff and Carol Morgan and it’s a beautiful place. Signs indicate that the talented Bruce Shermbeck is in charge of the renovation project. Take a look when you go past. It looks great. nnn

Say congratulations to Julie McCord when you see her. She celebrated a special birthday last Friday. Julie received a huge bunch of yellow helium-filled balloons at her work location in the courthouse. (There may have been, let’s see, perhaps 40 of them!) It was definitely the largest bunch of balloons I’ve ever seen. Anyway, at the close of the workday it was fun to watch her get them into the back of her van to transport them home. It required cooperation from some co-workers and a lot of laughter from others. nnn

Local newspapers ran accounts of the visit of Amy Wilhite, Marblehead, to the White House to meet with President Barack Obama. They were shown in the ultra-historic “East Room” meeting with news media. Amy is the mother of 12-year-old Taylor Wilhite who was diagnosed with a form of cancer; the family has experienced astronomical bills for her care. The President cited Taylor’s story when discussing the new health care legislation. The Wilhites have been articulate advocates for improved health insurance. Congratulations to them for taking this fun and helpful journey to Washington to illustrate new national health care provisions. nnn

“Just Dessert It” is a new shop in downtown Port Clinton in Suite E of the building at 109 Madison. Jennifer Buxton and Latoya Kleinhans are the owner/managers. The shop features a nice assortment

of desserts. Of special interest is a variety of flavors of Gelato, an Italian ice cream. It all looked very good when I stopped to browse — so I bought some of the goodies too. nnn

I’ve recently seen quite a bit of Queen Anne’s Lace, that airy white flower that grows along the road sides. It is also called wild carrot (probably because of the carrot-like appearance of the root — or maybe it’s actually a relative of the garden variety carrot). Some people refer to it simply as “Lace.” It’s a wonderful flower. It grows abundantly in fields, especially in hedgerows and along roads and lanes. In years past I’ve often cut it to use in floral arrangements. It’s a nice addition to most bouquets. And it makes an attractive floral arrangement when no other flowers are used, too. Just cut a lot of it and put it in a pretty vase with abundant water. Another use for this flower — and this is fun for kids to do, too — is to add food coloring to water and stick the flower stems into it as soon as you bring them into the house. The color is taken up the stem with the water and it colors the white flowers. I’ve had a lot of fun with this over the years. Another weed with prolific, if small, blossoms right now is chickory — a plant we used to call “snake weed.” Small blue flowers on a spindly stem without much foliage characterize this plant. But recently I have seen another wild flower growing along the sides of the roads and a friend named and described it for me. Take a close look at it when you have an opportunity. It is particularly abundant out on the Ohio 2 bypass south of Port Clinton but actually I’m seeing it nearly everywhere. And next week I’m going to describe it in detail because it is a remarkably interesting plant. Until then …

‘Take me out to the ballgame’ Teresa VanLerberghe joyfully sang, “Take Me Out To the Ball Game,” as she enjoyed a trip on the Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus activity bus, headed for a day at the ballpark. Seven residents accompanied five staff members enjoyed Senior Day on Tuesday, June 15, at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, to watch the favorite Toledo MudHens. Resident’s enjoyed a lunch of classic stadium food including hot dogs, hamburgers and popcorn, to name a few. While the

sky was overcast, a cool breeze kept temperatures perfect for the afternoon game. Though the MudHens lost 12-6, that did not steal the fun for the residents and staff of Riverview. The day was full of laughs and memories that will live on forever.  A special thanks to the staff from Ohio Veteran’s Home of Sandusky for making extra room in their section for the added comfort of the residents of Riverview Healthcare Campus.

Preschool offers First Kathryn Cobbledick new hours scholarship handed out Port Clinton Preschool has changed its hours. Programs are offered three days a week for both programs for kids ages 3 to 5. There will now be morning and afternoon sessions offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Hours for the 4- and 5-year-olds will be 8:30 to 11 a.m.; 3- and 4-year-olds will go from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Daily activities include the development of academic skills and preparing the children for kindergarten. Preschool themes are incorporated to encourage the development of fine motor, gross motor, visual perception and self care skills. Fieldtrips, holiday parties and parent participation are also a part of the program. The preschool is licensed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and the curriculum plan follows the Ohio Academic Content Standards for ages 3-5. All staff members are certified in First aid, CPR and continue in educational seminars. A drawing was held May 24 for the original Rick Dziak oil painting to benefit the Kathryn Cobbledick Art Scholarship. Dylan Cobbledick held the bucket filled with 940 tickets, and the winning ticket was drawn by Kim Holmes. Kim thought of the idea to start a scholarship in her friend’s name. The winner of the Dziak painting was Kelly Myers. On Tuesday, May 25, the first Kathryn Cob-

bledick Art Scholarship was awarded to Danbury Senior Kaitlin Hemmer. Kaitlin will be attending The Cleveland Institute of Art on a scholarship this fall, majoring in medical illustration. Collin DiMario made the dean’s list for Defiance College for spring 2010. The dean’s list recognizes those students who have achieved a 3.5 grade point average or higher in at least 12 semester hours of coursework. Collin is a senior majoring in business administration.

Local among Surgical Tech grads A new batch of EHOVE Career Center Adult Education students are transitioning to a new career. Seven students from the local area were enrolled in EHOVE’s Certified Surgical Technology program. All of them passed their national certification exam, graduated from the program on June 9, and are on their way to new opportunities. The graduates include Sue Piacentino, of Port Clinton; Marie Thorne, of Huron; Delilah O’Neal and Cassie Hector, of Vermilion; and Marcus Tremmel, Shaniece Hendrickson and Cheryl Stanley, of Sandusky. Combining their knowledge of hu-

man anatomy, sterile technique, surgical procedures and passing instrumentation, a Certified Surgical Tech facilitates a physician’s performance in a variety of settings. clinical experience. “This fast-paced environment offers job security in a continually growing field,” said EHOVE Coordinator Beth Snay. Champions for Children offers summer enrichment camps to provide working families quality childcare during the summer months. The nine-week camps are enhanced by enrichment activities

Historic anchor goes on display A historic anchor has been put in place outside the Ottawa County Historical Museum. Park McRitchie and his team from QuikStir in Erie Township, where the anchor has been in storage since being hauled up from the bottom of Lake Erie, installed the anchor with its lengthy chain on a concrete pad donated by Park, who is a trustee of the museum. McRitchie’s team cleaned, restored and preserved the anchor and did the research on its origin. Based on their research and information from the U.S. Navy, McRitchie believes the anchor to be a British anchor with chain from the 19th century, most likely a British anchor from the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. The anchor and chain were salvaged by Jake Dunfee, of Rescue Marine, with the cooperation of Rod Althaus and Patrix Heschel of New Wave Dive Shop. The anchor had to be removed with the U.S. Geological Survey and Federal Wildlife permission, because their Kevlar fish-

Red Cross gets grant from Ottawa County Community Foundation The American Red Cross has been awarded a grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundation to provide babysitter training to area youth. The award will allow 67 scholarships to students, giving them the opportunity to obtain skills needed to become more responsible babysitters — be it in an employment situation that adds to the family’s household income, or at home where they are left as caretakers for younger siblings. ODNR officer makes move FINDLAY — Reid Van Cleve, 38, was recently named as the new wildlife officer assigned to Ottawa County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. Van Cleve’s new assignment follows the retirement of former longtime Ottawa County Wildlife Officer John Waltos. “Reid is a great asset to the law enforcement program in Wildlife District Two, and will serve the citizens of Ottawa County well on all wildlife-related programs and the enforcement of fish and wildlife regulations to protect our wildlife resources,” said Paul Kurfis, law enforcement supervisor for Wildlife District Two in northwest Ohio. Van Cleve is from Evansville, Ind., and is a 1997 graduate of Vincennes University. He started as the wildlife officer assigned to Monroe County in 2007 after graduating from the Ohio Wildlife Officer Academy.

Declare your own financial Independence Day The Fourth of July is almost upon us. To commemorate Independence Day, we shoot off fireworks, attend picnics and maybe even walk in parades. While it might not be as dramatic, another celebration of freedom should eventually play a big role in your life — specifically, your personal Financial Independence Day. And you can speed the arrival of this day by making the right moves.

Whenever your salary goes up, try to contribute more to your 401(k). Generally, your contributions are made with pretax dollars, so the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. And your contributions grow on a tax-deferred basis. In 2010, you can put up to $16,500 into your 401(k), or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older. • “Max out” on your IRA. In 2010, you can contribute up to $5,000 to your IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. Your traditional IRA contributions may be deductible, depending on your income level, and your earnings can grow tax deferred. Contributions to a Roth IRA are never deductible, but earnings can grow tax free, provided you don’t take

Encouragement better than punishment Mistakes in sports are usually called errors, and they can be a pretty big deal. A foot fault can lose a game. A fumble can cost a championship. Signing an incorrect scorecard disqualifies a golfer. A blown call can ruin a pitcher’s perfect game. We all make mistakes — everyday. Resilient people try to deal with them, learn from them and move on. We hope others will forgive us and refrain from reminding us about it forever. Athletes don’t seem to have the same luxury.

When a pro player, coach or official makes a mistake, it becomes news. Announcers focus on it, replays are shown over and over, and reporters rant about it. Fans dish out angry criticism. When the person involved is interviewed, they will certainly be grilled about it — and maybe even years after the incident. With our ever-growing intensity in youth sports, we are seeing a lot of over-reaction to kids’ mistakes. We must realize that doing something incorrectly is part of the learning process. It’s OK to make mistakes! We should understand mistakes will be made. Consider an error to be a steppingstone to get better. Almost no one learns something new without messing up. When toddlers are learning to walk, they fall down a lot. People don’t get mad; we get excited because it’s a new skill. We encourage them with smiles and applause. We brag about them to anyone who will listen. We need to use the same approach with young kids learning new skills. We should be excited, encouraging and patient. It can take months before something new is actually incorporated into competition. Often, the player gets worse before they get better, especially if they are changing an old habit. It can be very discouraging. Patience is necessary. The real issue is how to treat the mistakes so improvement occurs. Coaches, parents and fans should unite in handling errors in a positive way. We need to replace recrimination and punishment with education. Help the kids learn how to fix the problems, both physically and emotionally. It’s actually easier to change a physical problem. Most coaches have an arsenal of methods to improve skills and teach strategies. Position coaches — ones who specialize in a certain part of a sport — can be great. Private lessons and group camps can help. Lots of practice (using the correct technique), is needed. It really is harder to teach resiliency. If a player receives nothing but harsh criticism, embarrassment or punishment, he or she has few positive responses available. The person dishing out the consequences hopes the player will work harder to eliminate the error. The child may try for a while. A more lasting result is to fear making mistakes. Being afraid causes timid play. Kids will soon begin to hate a coach or parent who is constantly critical. Athletes who are perfectionists suffer the most. Many burn out and drop out before high school because the fun is gone. Do not misunderstand me. Coaches should demand effort to improve. Kids should be expected to do their part by paying attention and practicing on their own. Encouragement just works better than punishment. It’s our nature to pick out what is wrong, but we must train ourselves to also see what is right. A little praise goes a long way toward making a player more receptive to corrective coaching. Kids who don’t care, or who are not willing to change, present big problems for coaches. It’s tough to motivate these players, but they will usually knock themselves out for you if they know you care about them. Look for progress, not just success. Champions, when competing, learn to overcome an error and focus on what happens next. Practice is where they concentrate on how to eliminate having the same problem again. Making a mistake does not make you a failure. Making someone feel like a failure is a much bigger mistake. nnn

Lake Erie license plates fund efforts on Middle Bass TOLEDO — The Ohio Lake Erie Commission administers Ohio’s Lake Erie Protection Fund, which is supported by the sale of Lake Erie (Marblehead and Toledo Harbor Lighthouse) license plates. The Commission awards small grants for a variety of projects, which directly benefit Lake Erie and its tributary watersheds in Ohio. On June 23, Commission members awarded four small grants for regional projects including $13,875 for the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy. The funding will go to habitat restoration efforts in the Middle Bass East Point Preserve. The site contains exceptional habitat for the Lake Erie watersnake and the project supports the Lake Erie Watersnake Recovery Plan. Funding will be used to assist in site restoration including the demolition and debris removal of dilapidated residential buildings, providing reuse of this site for Lake Erie watershed habitat and native vegetation.

East Harbor State Park among grant recipients SANDUSKY — Enhancements to Lake Erie, the coast and the Ohio Lake Erie watershed will be advanced through grants to nine Ohio groups seeking to improve water quality, public access and knowledge of the state’s greatest natural resource, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The 2010 Coastal Management Assistance Grants, awarded by the ODNR Office of Coastal Management, will help fund the development of plans for improving public access to Lake Erie; the creation of educational videos about the importance of Lake Erie-related research; efforts to clean and monitor nine Lake Erie beaches; and study Ohio waters of Lake Erie in an attempt to identify areas where wind energy facilities may or may not pose a threat to pelagic birds. The $311,835 in grant awards will be matched with local or non-federal funds for more than $675,000 in enhancements to communities and resources in Ohio’s Lake Erie watershed. East Harbor State Park

will receive $11,733 for the East Harbor Region Naturalist Funding Project. This project will extend the East Harbor and Kelleys Island naturalist seasons resulting in an increased focus on Lake Erie wildlife assets through the migratory bird season, offering more programs throughout the naturalist season, and additional Nature Center hours and live displays. The total project will cost $28,408. “These grants are precision tools for making sure our natural resources remain healthy while we improve our economy and quality of life,” said ODNR Director Sean Logan. “Our birds, forests and soil do not have to suffer when businesses grow. Fish, Wildlife Service officials reviewing refuge farm programs The Midwest Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is beginning a review of the farming programs on National Wildlife Refuge lands in our eight-state region. The National Environmental Policy Act review includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. Historically, farming has been an important tool used to manage refuge lands. Refuge managers used farming to provide high-quality, energy-rich foods for many wildlife species including migrating waterfowl. Additionally, because of the cold, long winters typical in the Midwest, agricultural crops are also used to provide food for resident wildlife.

Stein Hospice is sponsoring a free, three-hour introduction about the Sacred Art of Living and Dying July 22, at Sawmill Creek Resort. The Travelin’ Lounge Lizards

Paradise Island Band A six-piece powerhouse dance band based out of Columbus, the Paradise Island Band has been entertaining audiences throughout the Midwest for nearly two decades. Known for a crowd-pleasing diversity of styles, Paradise Island does it all from rock

classics to Motown melodies to blues, funk and current hits. They play with a power and authenticity that guarantees a party whenever they perform. The seasoned professionals feature an incomparable line-up of the region’s best entertainers. During the summer months, Paradise Island performs at many out-

door concerts and festivals. They also spend a great deal of time working famous resort sites from the Round House on Put-in-Bay to Sloppy Joe’s in Key West, Fla. Entertaining for corporate events, private parties, wedding receptions and club gigs fill out the rest of the calendar for Paradise Island Band.

The Travelin’ Lounge Lizards were formed in the summer of 1990 when Port Clinton Yacht Club hired the classic rock group Rare Earth to perform at their Parking Lot Party. That event was a seven-hour affair and Rare Earth was scheduled to play only an hour and a half! What to do for the other five hours? Somebody suggested putting together a band of local yacht club members who had played in bands previously. Chuck Reichman was immediately tabbed, along with Todd Finke and John Schaffner, who played in a band in high school. A few other elements were added (Dr. Gary Gruenke on bass and Bob Hille on rhythm guitar) and a band was formed. With a couple of personnel changes over the years, the Travelin’ Lounge Lizards have played to audiences all across northern Ohio and as far away as Gaylord, Mich., and Key West, Fla. The band’s focus has always been on Classic Rock tunes from the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Jimmy Buffet, Grand Funk Railroad and others. The Lizards are Chuck Reichman on lead guitar and vocals, John Schaffner on keyboard and vocals, Glen Tetzloff on bass guitar and vocals, Todd Finke on drums and vocals and Mike Reichman on rhythm guitar
