Standard Mail U.S. Postage Paid Port Clinton, Ohio Permit #80
June home sales up By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher Home sales activity in Ottawa, Erie and Huron counties is up from 2009 levels, according to the latest statistics provided by the Ohio Association of Realtors. OAR President Douglas McCloud said the primary cause of increased activity across Ohio was the finalization of purchases resulting from the federal home buyer tax credit program that expired in April. “It proved to be a big boost to Ohio’s housing market,” he said. On the local level, the Firelands As-
sociation of Realtors reported a 15.7 percent increase in the number of home sales in June 2010 compared to June 2009. The total dollar volume also rose more than 18 percent while the average sale price rose 2.2 percent in the same time frame. For the first six months of 2010, the number of home sales in the Firelands market area were up 10 percent, while the dollar volume of those sales rose nearly 21 percent from $89 million to $107 million. The average sale price for homes rose from just under $100,000 to almost $110,000.
Also on the local level, developers and Realtors reported having an excellent weekend of traffic during the recent Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes sponsored by The Beacon. There was one confirmed sale that came out of that event: a retired couple from western Pennsylvania purchased a unit at Beach Towne at Gem Beach two days after visiting that location during the Parade of Homes. Paul Shaw, general manager of the Vineyard on Catawba, said the volume and quality of the traffic generated that weekend was excellent.

Division of Watercraft moving to Catawba State Park By ANGIE ADAIR Editor The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft, will soon be on the moving its regional office from Sandusky into Ottawa County. Officials and watercraft officers were on hand Saturday at Catawba Island State Park showing residents there what they can expect. The plan is to tear down one of the current ODNR buildings at the park and replace it with a larger, more
modern facility — all without distrupting ramp usage. “Footprint-wise it will take up the same amount of space,” said Jeff Nehls, supervisor of the Sandusky office. “We are not looking to take away any parking spaces.” According to Nehls, the current office on Cleveland Road, is a rented space and was never meant to be a permanent facility. The move, he said, puts the office on the water which will improve response time
and accessibility for boaters. Services offered on site will include vessel safety checks and check-in for large, documented boats. Also in the plans is a 50-person conference room that can be used for a variety of purposes, including boater education classes. The open house gave time for public comment on the project. So far, Nehl’s said the response has been positive.

The Jet Express was packed with passengers this weekend heading over to Putin-Bay to take part in the biggest weekend party of the year — Christmas in July. But this time of year offers more than just fun in the sun, it’s also a chance to further the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. With bell ringers set up around Port Clinton, this year’s push was a big success. The Salvation Army-Port Clinton Service Unit — with staff and volunteers at Kroger, Community Market, the Jet and on Put-in-Bay — brought in $3,107.68. Maureen Saponari, Human Services Director for the PC Service Center, would like to extend special thanks to residents of Ottawa County who took the challenge of our economy at heart by pulling together to make this truly Christmas in July. Proceeds from the drive, which ran July 23-25, will go to the Salvation Army’s Toy Program. For information on Salvation Army’s PC Service Unit and how to help, contact Saponari at 419-732-2769 or email maureen.saponari@use.salvationarmy.org.

I firmly believe when someone shows an act of kindness, or compliments someone, they will be blessed in return. A couple of weeks ago, a dear neighbor of mine suffered a serious medical condition, which required emergency surgery and a prolonged hospital and rehab stay. This woman has always been there for everyone in the neighborhood, from plowing snow for others, to baking cookies. It was our turn to repay her for all of her kindness. Several of us neighbors decided to pool our money together to have her

Red Cross On behalf of the Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the America Red Cross, I would like to thank northwest Ohio for the tremendous outpouring of support for those impacted by the June 5th tornadoes. Our community response is always generous beyond what we anticipate. It not only makes our ability to help those in need with speed, ease, comfort and compassion, but offers hope and support for those impacted. In every effort to be transparent with the community, I wanted to share that to date northwest Ohioans have donated $278,103 to the Red Cross. Thus far we have spent $181,142 to aid those directly impacted, including meals, emergency shelter, cleaning supplies and grief counseling. This amount includes $45,000 transferred to communitybased long term recovery committees in Fulton, Ottawa, and Wood counties, to support long-term recovery efforts after the Red Cross had met the emergency needs of our clients. We will continue to work with the Longterm Recovery Committees on issues and needs as yet unseen or even imagined for those devastated by the disaster and we are ready to provide additional financial support based on requests from these community-based committees. Additionally, we have also pledged $31,200 to the Lake School District for emergency preparedness and safety training for students of all ages. We know these programs will help save lives for generations to come and ensure the community is better prepared should we ever experience another catastrophic event. The road to recovery is long, yet the contributions and support of our community offers aid and support hours after the event

No to Cap and Trade A couple weeks ago, a bill was read on the floor of Congress that took 11 hours to read. Anything that long has got to be a burden on us poor taxpayers. The name of the bill is Cap and Trade. Cap and Trade would work like this: the government would require companies to obtain permits that give them the right to emit a fixed amount of greenhouse gases. The limit on emissions (the cap) would be gradually reduced over the years until it reached an agreed level. There are two versions. The government could auction those mandatory licenses, a process that smells like a tax. CBO figures that government revenues from these mandatory permits could range from $50 billion to $300 billion annually. It would be paid by consumers in the form of higher prices. The mandated reduction of fossil fuels would drive up prices, which drives up prices of gasoline, home heating oil and anything else used by fossil fuels. Obama, Clinton and McCain favor the bill in one form or another. I think McCain has been in Washington too long, the liberal Gods have tainted his brain. The whole Cap and Trade experience in Europe and elsewhere reveals that this is a huge command-andcontrol operation that taxes, spends and regulates on a grand scale. The “cap” part rolls back production to an extent that undermines growth. The big polluters, China and India, already have indicated they want no part of such an international plan. Republicans opponents warned it would impose one of the largest-ever burdens on the American public, further raising petrol prices. It’s probably the largest bill ever considered by the United States Senate in the terms of its impact on our economy. President Bush, who has long opposed mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions, threatened to veto the bill, if presented to him. However with a Democratic Congress and a Liberal President, this Albatross might be placed around our necks. Ron Mainous, Catawba

There must have been worse heat sometime in the past than we had at the end of last week (Thursday, Friday, Saturday), but I personally don’t remember such a miserable time. People were about half sick from dealing with it — they were queasy, grumpy and unable to eat much! I’m not sure how the heat affected the Ottawa County Fair but the show animals must have suffered from it. I was supposed to work at the fair Thursday afternoon but knew I would not be able to tolerate the heat. So luckily I found someone else to take over the task for me. Later that day it was still plenty hot when I took the 5:30 p.m. boat from Marblehead to Kelleys Island to join friends for dinner. We ate at West Bay and all of us really enjoyed the camaraderie and conversation. Coming back on the 8:30 p.m. boat, it was apparent that the weather would finally cool off that day. It rained a little, but not really enough to wash the heat and humidity out of the air.

If you have old tires you want to get rid of, keep them around and you’ll soon be able to get rid of them. The Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Solid Waste District will sponsor a tire recycling event Oct. 16. You may transport a maximum of 10 tires to the site. For Ottawa County that will be the county fairgrounds, W. Ohio 163, 2 miles east of Oak Harbor. There will be a minimal charge: 50 cents per car or small truck tire and $2 for racing tires. A farm tire collection will be held in early September. nnn

There is an interesting article about birds in the 2010 August–September issue of “Birds and Blooms” magazine. It describes how brown-headed cowbirds lay an egg in the nest of another species of bird, leaving the egg (and the bird that hatches from it) in the care of another set of bird parents. The reason? Long ago the cowbirds followed herds of bison and were dependent on the bison for food. “Because the herds were always on the move, cowbirds had no time to build nests, lay eggs and raise young … ” according to George Harrison, author of the article. So the cowbird mama looked for a nest with eggs laid by another
bird, got rid of one of those eggs and laid an egg of her own to replace it. Some species of birds will accept the “orphan” egg, hatch it and raise it. The article even includes a rare picture of a cowbird removing an egg from another bird’s nest. She simply impales the egg on her beak, lifts it and disposes of it. You’ll find the article interesting. There is a lot more information in it, including what kinds of birds will (or will not) accept the strange egg in their nests. nnn
The last part of the column today will be somewhat religious in nature. Keep reading if you’re interested. The Prayer Everybody Knows It is estimated that on April 4 this year, approximately 2 billion people worshipped at some type of Christian service somewhere in the world. That was Easter Sunday and people around the globe, speaking hundreds of languages, engaged in various types of worship services. These varied from place to place and from culture to culture; denominational preferences also constituted some differences in worship liturgy. But one thing that most Christians had in common on that day was praying the “Lord’s Prayer.” Whether spoken, read, recited, sung or chanted, the Lord’s Prayer is usually an integral part of worship. Most people — even if they do not profess the Christian faith — recognize this prayer when they hear it. Some non-Christians even know it from memory. The prayer is also known as the “Our Father” because it begins with those words. The Bible attributes the words directly to the teachings of Jesus and it is found in two of the Gospels: Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11: 2-4. The shorter version in Luke is thought by scholars to have been the earlier account. The slightly longer version in Matthew is incorporated into “The Sermon on the Mount,” a fairly lengthy discourse from Jesus on appropriate behaviors for Christian converts. Some scholars believe
that the words for the “Lord’s Prayer” were general in tone — that Jesus said that his followers should pray in a certain “manner.” Other scholars believe that the words were meant to be memorized and said exactly as the Savior taught them. Of course, when these accounts were first written, they were in Greek. So every other language used for the prayer is a translation. This prayer is divided, basically, into three parts with a praise verse at the conclusion. The first calls upon God as being in heaven and the Father of us all. Then it moves into a petition that God’s kingdom will come into being on earth. The second part is a petition asking God to take care of our basic needs (but only “daily” bread — not looking far ahead or storing up for the future). In the third part, the petitioner asks for forgiveness insofar as he/she has forgiven others. That leads into asking God to keep us away from the lure of temptation or acts of evil in the future. Not mentioned in either Gospel, but often generally used by Protestants, is a concluding doxology (a phrase or song of praise and worship). “For Thine (yours) is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever (and ever). Amen. “Amen,” translated literally means, “so be it” or “let this come to pass.” The Lord’s Prayer is beautiful and reassuring. It is used in many situations — from baptisms to weddings to funerals. It is prayed at hospital bedsides when folks are ill; it is prayed by families and friends when they keep watch beside a death bed. The prayer is also prayed for a person in an unconscious or semiconscious state in hopes that the familiar words will be heard and recognized and that comfort will be derived from “hearing” them. Like Holy Communion and baptism, praying the Lord’s Prayer is an act that was specifically authorized in instructions by Jesus to his disciples and followers. Therefore, the words are precious to Christians around the globe.

Snyder wants to bring people together, tie into the community, and continue to find avenues that will invite people to the Sutton Center. He’s a busy man but says, “When I slow down, my goal is to paint.” The Art Club will be ready for him. Organized in 1956, the Port Clinton Artists’ Club was established to further the training and education of its members. Monthly meetings and workshops are supported by the club fundraiser Arts in the Park, where 150 artists showcase and sell their original art. It will be held on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 7-8 at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. For information about joining the Port Clinton Artists’ Club, contact vice president Helen Arnold at 419-7974411.

Art gallery added to Sutton Center Local developer Bob Snyder and his partners, son Brian, Mike Bassett and Doug Focht, had a vision for Port Clinton when they bought and remodeled the building that is now the Sutton Center to accommodate local businesses and non-profit organizations. Located at 1848 Perry St., the Sutton Center continues to evolve and attract new and varied interest, including an art gallery coordinated by the Port Clinton Artists’ Club. “We were happy when we were approached with the idea, and delighted to have a place to showcase the marvelous work of our members,” said Dee Cochran, art club vice president and chairwoman of the Sutton Center art gallery project. Club members were invited to submit their art to a committee that made selections for the gallery. Linda Snyder, Bob’s wife, Cochran and other club members spent a day hanging the art for display and sale. Much of the art is for sale, some is from private collections, but all shows the considerable talent of the Port Clinton Artists’ Club members. Purchases can be made at Common Grounds Coffee Shop, which is located on the premises, and opened seven

And if your illness is incurable, consider Stein Hospice. More than 80 percent of patients with a chronic disease say they want to avoid hospitalization and intensive care at the end of life, according to the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. But often the decision to call hospice is not made until the very last days or hours of life, after repeated, frustrating and painful medical interventions. At Stein Hospice, we focus on caring for, not curing the individuals in our care. A team of medical professionals, counselors, chaplains and volunteers join together, around the clock if necessary, to bring you and your family a range of services, from respite care to grief counseling. Remember it’s your life. Know your choices for end of life care.

Ohio RCAP offers its first conference for community leaders 7-31-10 7-31-10
On Aug. 24, the Ohio RCAP staff at WSOS will open its first-ever conference to community leaders around Ohio. “This is an ambitious effort, but we are excited about it,” said Deb Martin, director of The Great Lakes Rural Community Assistance Program, administered by WSOS. The conference, slated for Aug. 24-25 at the Hilton Easton, Columbus, has secured U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, as one of its guest speakers; Dr. Ned Hill, of Cleveland State University; and has invited Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland. Titled “Small Towns, Big Futures,” the conference offers three main tracks: infrastructure, economic development and legislative affairs. Under the infrastructure track, topics include rate setting for small communities, reducing energy costs, bringing broadband to rural communities, how GIS can help rural communities and bill collection. GEM BEACH ROCKS
No. 1 Buffett tribute band to headline Gem Beach Rocks Dave Albrecht of the Parrots of the Caribbean bought his first harmonica at the age of 18 and by the age of 30 he landed a front-man position impersonating “Elmwood Blues” — aka Dan Akroyd — in a nine-piece Blues Brothers Band based in Dayton. For the next five years, the band traveled across the country performing in theaters, civic arenas and concert halls. Soon after, Dave signed with “Legends in Concert” a top-ranked show of impersonators based at Imperial Palace Casino in Las Vegas where he was employed for the next several years. By the early ’70s, Dave was inspired by his love for the music of Jimmy Buffett — long before the advent of “Parrotheads” — and took his passion for musical performance in a new direction. With his previous experience singing and dancing on stage, the transition to his Buffett act was just a matter of perfecting the song lyrics. He gathered some of the finest, seasoned musicians for his new band, Parrots of the Caribbean, and over the past seven years has earned his acclaim as the #1 Jimmy Buffett act in the country. • Lead Singer and harmonica player Dave Albrecht — aka J.B. — is a true showman providing a feast for the eyes and ears, “electrifying” the fans with his vocals, music, antics and costumes. • Gary “Riptide” Rigmaiden, Louisiana-born and world-traveled, sings back-up while laying down complex bass guitar riffs that’ll keep you movin’ and grooving.’ • Greg “Great White” Martin is a monster drummer and percussionist who literally pumps up the energy in the house, while singing lead and

A systematic investment plan does not assure a profit and does not protect against loss in a declining market. Such a plan involves continuous investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities, the investor should consider the financial ability to continue the purchases through periods of low price levels.

Throughout her time with the Scouts, one of her favorite things to do with her girls was camping. She not only took them tent camping but also cabin camping at Camp Libby many times. The staff at Edgewood is proud to have been able to be part of honoring this woman for her lifetime of service to this countries youth.
Elsie Woolley, a six-year resident of Edgewood Manor, was honored last month for her 45 years of service to the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio Troop No. 11049 from Port Clinton performed the ceremony under the leadership of Tina Whiting. In her many years of dedicated service, Elsie was a Girl Scout leader as well as a treasurer, recruiter, trainer, cookie manager and service unit manager. Are municipal bonds right for you?
Tax season “officially” ended on April 15. Yet you can explore taxsmart investment opportunities all year round. And when you’re looking at the fixed-income side of your portfolio, you may want to consider two possibilities: municipal bonds and Build America Bonds. You’ve probably heard of municipal bonds, but you may not be familiar with how they work. You can find two key types of municipal bonds: General obligation bonds finance the daily operations of a municipality or school district, while revenue bonds finance hospitals, utilities, airports, affordable housing and other public works. So when you purchase a “muni,” you are help-
ing support a community. Of course, your investment will bring you some tangible benefits, too. First, you’ll receive regular interest payments. Furthermore, these payments typically are exempt from federal income taxes — and possibly state and local income taxes, too. If you’re in an upper income bracket, you may find munis to be especially valuable. (Keep in mind, though, that some “private activity bonds,” which are typically used to finance airports, housing or stadiums that can benefit private entities, may be subject to the alternative minimum tax, or AMT.) Build America Bonds (BABs) share some similarities with tax-
free municipal bonds, although BABs are taxable investments. BABs provide capital to municipalities so that they can build or improve infrastructure, including schools, roads, public buildings and so on. The U.S. Treasury pays state or local government issuers a subsidy equal to 35% of the interest they pay investors for buying the bonds. BABs have proved quite popular among institutional investors, such as pension funds, that typically don’t benefit from tax-free municipal bonds. But are they right for you? It all depends on your individual situation. If you owned a BAB, your interest payments would be federally taxable, but

make payments. Remember, the municipality issuing the bond, not the federal government, backs a BAB. Although past performance is not a guarantee of future results, municipal bonds’ historical default rates have been low. Ultimately, you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor before purchasing either a municipal bond or a BAB. Like all investments, they can provide you with benefits, but you need to be absolutely sure of what you’re getting. nnn

you might get some state tax breaks if you live in the state where the bond is issued. Many BABs have long-term maturities, which may not be a problem if you’re buying the bond for its steady interest payments and plan to hold it for its entire life. But if you think you might want to sell your bond before it matures, be aware that longer-term bonds, by their very nature, are subject to greater interest rate risk than shorter-term bonds — that is, longer-term bond prices will be more affected by interest rate movements. Furthermore, you’ll have to consider credit risk — the possibility that the issuer of your bond will default or be unable to

Explore the magic of nature The following events are coming up at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge: • “The Magic of Moths and Other Nighttime Flyers” — 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6. Did you know that well more than 1,000 species of moths can be found right here in northwest Ohio? Join Kenn Kaufman, world-renowned naturalist and author of the Kaufman Field Guide Series, for “The Magic of Moths and Other Nighttime Flyers” at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge visitor center at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6. Kaufman’s program will begin with an indoor slide program to introduce the dazzling diversity of moth species, and to describe some of the fascinating behavior of moths. As soon as it gets dark, weather permitting, we’ll go outside to see what varieties we can attract to our lights and to our special “moth bait.” In

BAUMANN AUTO CENTER
Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District announces its 2010 fish sale. Area Pond owners you have the opportunity to stock their ponds with fish through this convenient and low-cost program until Friday, Oct. 1. The fish are supplied by Fender’s Fish Hatchery, Baltic, Ohio. Their tank truck, with aerator, will distribute the ordered fish on Thursday, Oct. 7 in the afternoon. Fish available are: Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Fathead Minnows, Largemouth Bass, Redear Sunfish and White Amur. White Amur (more commonly known as “Grass Carp”) are members of the minnow family reported to attain weights in excess of 100 pounds and to live up to 15 years. They bear little resemblance to the common carp. Although cultured in Asia as a source of food, the sterile White Amur is primarily used in the United States to control aquatic vegetation. Leafy, rooted aquatic plants, such as pondweed and coontail, are the preferred food of these fish. Lacking these, they will consume floating duckweed, green algae and even cattails. All fish must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. To receive an order form, call the OSWCD office at 419-898-1595 or stop in at 240 W. Lake St., Oak Harbor. The deadline for ordering is Friday, Oct. 1.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will provide $548,571 to support 13 fish habitat projects in eight Midwestern states under the National Fish Habitat Action Plan, according to Midwest Regional Director Tom Melius. An additional $640,923 in partner contributions will go toward restoring and enhancing stream, lake and coastal habitat, improving recreational fishing and helping endangered species, and supporting long-term protection against the effects of climate change. More than $13.2 million in total federal and partner contributions will be distributed under NFHAP for fish habitat projects across the United States. The funding is provided for priority projects identified through Fish Habitat Partnerships established under the NFHAP. Eight of those partnerships directly influence states in the Midwest and direct funding and other resources to habitat improvement projects offering the highest long-term conservation returns. Aquatic ecosystems are especially vulnerable to changes in climate. Healthy habitats help fish and other aquatic life withstand flows and temperatures that are altered due to climate change. The projects will improve stream flow, remove barriers or acquire scientific information needed for long-term protection against the effects of climate change. “Climate change, fragmentation, invasive species and habitat destruction harm fish habitat in the Midwest,” said Melius. “It is our responsibility to work with our partners to heal the damage and protect our valuable fishery resources against future harm.” More than 40 percent of U.S. fish populations are currently considered declining, half of the waters in the U.S. are somehow impaired, and fragmented conservation efforts are not reversing these declines. In addition to helping stem these declines, NFHAP projects also enhance fishing opportunities for the public by putting more dollars on the ground for fish conservation. For information about the National Fish Habitat Action Plan, its partnerships and programs, visit www.fishhabitat.org.

SANDUSKY — How can we make your Lake Erie experience better? This is the question four Ohio agencies that work together to improve Lake Erie are asking people who live, work and play along Ohio’s 312-mile coast, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Lake Erie Ohio Public Access/Visitation Survey seeks to gather data on perception and satisfaction levels with public access to Ohio’s portion of Lake Erie, visitation habits of Ohio residents and tourists, and activities that people like to participate in while visiting. Open until Sept. 17, the survey can be accessed online by visiting ohiodnr. com/coastal and selecting the “Public Access Survey: Ohio Lake Erie Visitation” icon. The agencies’ goal is to work with coastal visitor bureaus, metropolitan park districts, watershed groups, non-government organizations and communities to improve Lake Erie access and amenities based on the survey results. By basing public access improvements on user feedback, it is hoped visitation to Lake Erie will increase, resulting in positive impacts to coastal communities’ economies. Hospice opens new resale shop As a not-for-profit agency, Stein Hospice is always looking for novel ways to raise money to support its mission. Next on tap for Stein is an upscale resale shop in downtown Sandusky. The shop will be located at 126 Columbus Ave., across the street from Sandusky State Theatre. Featured items will include vintage and designer clothing, accessories, jewelry, collectibles and furniture. It is slated to open late summer. Hospices across the country have opened resale shops in an effort to both raise money for patient services, and help families find a new home for household and personal items after a loved one dies. The success of these new venture depends largely on the amount of support
provided by volunteers. Realizing this, Stein Hospice is currently looking for volunteers who possess a variety of skills including appraising and pricing, refurbishing, repairing and experiece as a cashier. Most important is a friendly attitude; no experience necessary. Stein will hold a meet & greet at 7 p.m. Aug. 10 to introduce the new shop to community members and interested volunteers. Some items on the wish list include: cash register and/or Point of Sale hardware and new or gently used commercial grade carpeting. Donations will be accepted beginning July 31. Those interested in donating or volunteering can call 419-625-5269 or 800625-5269 or visit www. steinhospice.org.

Ottawa County is a hotbed of artistic creativity. The talent, the mediums and the passions are evident in the art that is being offered at this year’s Arts in the Park sponsored by the Port Clinton Artists’ Club. Many artists return to this exciting festival year after year because of their success and the serenity the area has to offer. New artists have found their way here as well. Nearly 150 artists from Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Florida will be showing and selling their original creations at Arts in the Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, and Sunday, Aug. 8. The show is open to the public and will be held at Lakeview Park on Perry Street in Port Clinton across from the public beach. One of the oldest art festivals in Ohio, Arts in the Park is celebrating 53 years of continuing to bring unique and original art to Ottawa County. Demonstrations will be going on throughout the festival, including a chain saw artist, and everyone will want to play Big Birdie Golf, created and made by Ben Knapp. A full-swing yard golf game, it’s a real golf ball attached to an oversized birdie that is hit into a net. It is all the rage with celebrities and homes across the country.
