ICS celebrates 150 years Birders Toledo Bishop LAKESIDE
going for world record
coming to church for Mass, dinner
By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher For 150 years, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church has served the Catholic Community of Port Clinton and the area. This Sunday, following a full year of celebratory events, Bishop Leonard Blair, the Bishop of Toledo, will come to Port Clinton to celebrate 10:30 Mass and the 150 years of the church. A large catered dinner will follow in the school gymnasium. It all began with the conversion of a number of Native Americans long before there was an organized Catholic Church in Port Clinton. According to the late John Gilmary Shea, a former historian for the Catholic Church in America, Fr. Pierre Potier, a Jesuit Missionary, celebrated the sacrifice of the Catholic Mass in 1749 at a Huron Indian settlement near the Sandusky Bay. The first Catholic Church was built in Port Clinton in the mid 1860s, more than 100 years later. It was authorized by Bishop Rappe, the first bishop of Cleveland. Until then, the ability for local Catholics to celebrate Mass was hit and miss when pastors from Fremont and Sandusky could make it here. In the early 1860s, two lots at the corner of 4th and Madison Streets, where the present church is today, were chosen for a new church. Fr. G.A. Verlet was then given the charge to assume the role of pastor of the new church in Port Clinton, named Immaculate Conception. In April of 1901, construction began on a new Church building made of Marblehead white limestone and Ohio blue
sandstone. Fr. Francis Hroch, who became pastor at Immaculate Conception in 1894, oversaw the planning and building of the current facility. The next momentous event was the arrival of Fr. Karl Brand in 1927. He remained the pastor of Immaculate Conception parish until the mid 1960s and is
still remembered fondly for his boisterous style and his loud voice. He helped the church and the school survive the Great Depression by roving the countryside in search of bargains at the local vegetable stands. He then created on his own veg-
From Sept. 15-18, the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium (MBS) will return to Lakeside, where it hosted nearly 1,000 attendees in 2009. “The World’s Friendliest Birding Event” promises to be bigger and better with a crowd of bird watchers expected from around the continent. The symposium will feature programs and performances by North America’s leading bird watchers, an opportunity for birders to network with hundreds of fellow enthusiasts, a vendor area with nature products and services, and field trips to the area’s best birding spots. Among the many speakers slated for this event are National Public Radio commentator Julie Zickefoose, bird artist/photographer Keith Hansen, president of the American Birding Association Jeffery A. Gordon, bird caller Nicole Perretta and writer/humorist Al Batt. Many activities have been planned, including a Lake Erie sunset boat ride aboard the Goodtime I, Back to the Wild exhibit, Kelleys Island Birding excursion and activities for young birders. This year, attendees will be attempting to set a world record for the most people performing a bird call in unison. They have chosen the barred owl for its easy-toimitate call. Bird call expert Nicole Perretta will teach the call to the assembled audience of birders, then will lead them in the record-set-

Last weekend was the beginning of the 200-year observance of the Battle of Lake Erie. It has become a rich tradition on that weekend that Boy Scouts from all over the U.S. have a camp out around the Peace Memorial. The leaders of our local Boy Scout troops have become an integral part of that event over the years, feeding literally thousands of youngsters. Thanks for giving our area a good name. nnn

The Port Clinton Knights of Columbus would like to thank all those involved in making the 2011 Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival a great success. This year, more than 3,000 people attended the festival. Without the assistance of more than 190 volunteers, this festive event would not be possible. Many thanks go out to our suppliers, musicians, sponsors, volunteers, the City of Port Clinton and our supporters. A special thanks go out to our neighbors Americas Best Value Inn, Mendoza’s Mexican Restaurant and Fisherman’s Wharf for their cooperation and assistance. Plans are already being made for next year’s eighth Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival to make it an even bigger and better event. Festival co-chairmen Jerry Arnold and Ed Verkin

WWII honors I enjoyed your article about the WW2 vets and the Honor Flight. I’d like to relate a little story about my dad, Omer Howell. He too is a WW2 veteran, having served in Europe. He was in France, Germany and the
Netherlands. He is 87 years old and still doing pretty good. He has all the aches and pains and memory problems associated with growing old. He and my Mother live in a nice three-bedroom house in Erie Township just down the road from us. Two years ago my wife and I visited some friends in Virginia, close to Washington DC. While there we went to the mall area and saw the war memorials, including the World War 2 Memorial. I told my wife that I had to bring my Dad here. As it happened we were on our way to Virginia Beach to pick them up from their winter stay with my sister in Florida. I told them that we had a side trip to take them into DC. We pulled up to the Memorial and got a really decent parking place just outside the front entrance. My Dad had the WW2 hat that my wife Pat bought him while we were there a couple days before. My Dad is a quiet man and is somewhat hard to engage in a conversation especially if he doesn’t know you. But that day he seemed to relish in the spotlight. People were coming up to him and shaking his hand and even hugged him. He walked around the memorial for awhile and found the column from his home state of Idaho. He posed for some pictures in front of the column. All and all it was great and a day I’ll always treasure. Sometimes in todays fast paced world I wonder if people stop to think about the sacrifices made by soldiers like my Dad that went away for the duration of the war. There was no rotation R and R. My sister was born while he was in a foreign land dodging bullets. He never speaks of his time there except to say that Belgium reminded him of Idaho and made him homesick. I always tell people that my sister was a going away present and I was a welcome home present. Jack Howell
Animal Sanctuary Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary Inc. would like to congratulate the Humane Society of Ottawa County for securing funds to repair their existing premises and triple in size. As the local news reports and Facebook article stated, they are now functioning as the Humane Society, shelter and a sanctuary. We feel that you can never have too many sanctuaries, there is such a need in this community. We wish them the best. Let’s all hope that with two functioning sanctuaries in this county, neither of us will be needed and all the animals will be in safe hands in the years to come. The Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary functions nationwide, but welcomes this area’s needs. As a “sanctuary, ”we house and care for unadoptable cats and dogs. Any adoptable, abused, unwanted or neglected pet issues should be adopted out to caring homes by the Humane Society. All animal abuse and neglect should be reported to the Humane Officer(s) or the Humane Society. Please note that Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc. does not take the place of any Humane Society, nor are they in competition. Our hopes are to work in conjunction to enhance their efforts. We mainly work in conjunction with animal rescue groups and animal shelters nationwide. We are active in educating the public in proper care of cats and dogs. Please visit our website: www.wix.com/islandhas/i Thank you from the entire staff of Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Inc.

BIRDERS from 1A ting attempt. This record attempt has received approval from officials at The Guinness Book of World Records, and symposium officials will be carefully documenting the evening, as required by the Guinness Book. “We wanted to do something fun that everyone could participate in — and most bird watchers know how to imitate a bird or two,” said Bill Thompson III, one of the coordinators of the Midwest Birding Symposium. “I can’t wait to hear what we sound like!” The record attempt, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, will be witnessed by a local government official, notarized, and recorded in both audio and video formats as part of the record documentation requirements. The MBS is a non-profit birding event held every other year in the Midwest. Since the first symposium in the Chicago suburbs in 1989, the event has been held in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio. Lakeside hosted the symposium in 1997, 1999 and most recently in 2009. The symposium donates the majority of its net proceeds to support conservation-oriented organizations and programs. In 2009, MBS made donations totaling $10,000 thanks to a matching donation from The Ohio Ornithological Society. Bird Watcher’s Digest, The Ohio Ornithological Society and the Lakeside Association are hosts of the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium. RAY OF SUNSHINE First-graders in Rita McNutt’s classroom at Immaculate Conception School created a “ray of sunshine” for their classroom by making a field of sunflowers. They showed them off and explained the garden creatures that were added to their special sunflower. Some flowers were decorated with ladybugs, butterflies and bees. Pictured with their masterpieces are: Stefanie Jadwisiak (front left), Luke Saffran, Gabrielle Johnson, Noah Zimmerman, Dalton Reed, Levi Schultz (middle left), Olivia Felbinger, Parker Fanning, Kaitlyn Robinette, Jacob Weldon, Mia Kevlishvilli (back left), Carson Snyder, Carly Robinette, Taylor Bollinger and Lily Spieldenner.
BG Firelands ‘military friendly’ G.I. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has awarded Bowling Green State University Firelands College the designation of Military Friendly School. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. “The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience,” said Executive Director for the Student Veterans of America Michael Dakduk. In its effort to help student veterans find the right school, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans for the first time. Ohio, nation recognizes Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, so does her unborn child. Despite warnings from experts and volumes of scientific/medical research providing compelling evidence for mothers not to drink during pregnancy, one in 100 babies born in Ohio suffer from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder — a wide range of permanent, life-altering physical, mental and social effects. These children are born affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, which according to the U.S. Surgeon General is the leading known cause of preventable mental and birth defects. Recognizing the gravity of FASD and the impact it has on affected children and their families, Governor Kasich designated September as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness and Prevention Month. This coincides with national FASD Awareness Day Sept. 9, which has occurred annually since 1999. The ninth day of the ninth month was chosen as a reminder to women to abstain from alcohol during their nine months of pregnancy. Melinda Slusser, Superintendent of the Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities said that awareness is an important first step to preventing FASD. “FASD is 100 percent preventable,” said Slusser. “Awareness can be one of the most deciding factors in bringing about positive change.”

Women who are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant need to know that no amount of alcohol is safe — not a single drop. According to SAMHSA’s 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 10.6 percent of pregnant women age 15 to 44 reported current alcohol use. In addition, 4.5 percent reported binge drinking, which is four or more drinks in a row, and 0.8 percent reported heavy drinking. The number of women who engaged in binge drinking during the first-trimester of pregnancy more than doubled in comparison to the previous survey period. To help increase awareness of FASD and its life-long effects, the State of Ohio created a task force in 2003, which is composed of several state agencies, prevention professionals, educators and parents or caregivers of children with FASD. The task force promotes abstaining from alcohol during pregnancy to prevent FASD, urging women not to drink a single drop. Locally, the Ottawa County Board of DD Early Intervention & Help Me Grow Program will be raising awareness by presenting “Not a Single Drop” to students of the Family & Consumer Science Class at Oak Harbor High School. For information and resources about FASD, please visit Ohio’s FASD initiative Web site at www.notasingledrop.org.

BSBO honors its volunteers At their annual volunteer recognition picnic, Black Swamp Bird Observatory recognized its many volunteers and presented their prestigious “Shieldcastle Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service,” to Delores Cole of Cleveland, and Karen Zach of Perrysburg. Created in honor of Mark and Julie Shieldcastle, two of the founding members of the Observatory, the Shieldcastle Award recognizes individuals who have given extraordinary time, talent and service to BSBO’s mission to inspire the appreciation, enjoyment and conservation of birds and their habitats through research, education and outreach.
More than 70 volunteers from around the state gathered to celebrate BSBO’s work and the thousands of volunteer hours required to achieve the organization’s goals. In addition to the Shieldcastle Award presentations, many individuals were recognized for volunteer milestones for hours of service and the number of years as a volunteer with the organization. “Caring, committed citizens like Delores Cole and Karen Zach remind us that humans can still have a positive impact on this planet,” said Kimberly Kaufman, the observatory’s executive director. “Everyone at BSBO feels blessed to know and work along-
side these remarkable individuals. They epitomize what it means to give back, and we are thrilled to honor their efforts with this award.” Tim Bollin, chairman of the BSBO board of directors, says he is amazed at what the Observatory accomplishes on a small budget. “When we stop to catch our breath and look back over a year’s worth of hard work, the breadth
and reach of this organization is astounding. From hosting one of the country’s largest birding festivals, The Biggest Week in American Birding, banding more songbirds than any other bird banding research station in the country, and offering free songbird education programs to thousands of local students each year, BSBO has grown into an organization with a national reputation,” he said. “We have a
tremendous staff, but without the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, our work would not be possible.” BSBO offers wide-ranging opportunities for volunteers, from assisting in the gift shop and office, to working on many bird research projects. To learn more about being a part of this organization, call BSBO at 419-898-4070 or email staff@bsbo.org.
Ohio Chapter of the Ninety Nines gather at PC airport Carl Keller Field is the site of the Sept. 18 meeting of the AllOhio Chapter of the Ninety Nines, International Organization of Women Pilots. Pilots and spouses, who are 49 ½s, will fly or drive to Port Clinton airport for a business meeting and later join in the festivities of the Gypsum Reunion. This is the 18th year the 99s have met in conjunction with the annual Gypsum reunion.
Ninety Nines were named for 99 charter members. They formed in 1929 when all 117 licensed American female pilots were invited to assemble for mutual support and the advancement of aviation. Amelia Earhart was the first president. International and local chapters give scholarships to pilots furthering their aviation education. According to statistics from the Federal Aviation Administration,
only 13 percent of all pilot certificates are held by women, but women are the fastest growing sector of aviation. Chairman of the All-Ohio Chapter, chartered in 1933, is Roberta Jones of Columbus and Put-in-Bay. Other chapters in Ohio are Lake Erie (1974), Scioto Valley (1981), Greater Cincinnati (1986) and Women with Wings (1993) in the Akron-Canton area. For many years at different
airports, the All-Ohio Chapter held the Buckeye Air Rally, open to men and women. Chapters cooperate with the FAA and other aviation organizations to present safety seminars throughout the year. Pinch hitter courses are designed to help a non-pilot land a plane if the pilot has a medical emergency. Ninety-nines and other women pilots in the area are invited to attend the social time at 11 a.m.,
program at noon and viewing progress of the ongoing restoration of the Tin Goose (Ford TriMotor) being done by the local Experimental Aviation Association. Aviation activities for those flying to Port Clinton were organized by Linda Blodgett and Chris Creamer of Ashland. For information about this meeting or the 99s, contact Edna Hansen at 419-734-2423.
Bike trail construction to begin at Meadowbrook On Sept. 19, construction will begin on approximately 3,000 feet of paved bike trails and boardwalks at Meadowbrook Marsh. Danbury Township was awarded grant money from the Clean Ohio Trails Fund and Recreational Trails Fund for this project. KF Construction & Excavating will be installing the trails and construction will be completed by the end of the year. During this time, some of the existing trails will be closed in order for the trail connections to be made. Currently there are more than 3,000 feet of existing ADA-accessible paved trails at Meadowbrook. The new trails and boardwalks will connect to the existing trails and create a loop throughout the park.

Canvas cloth, oil lanterns and jungle grass table decorations added to the ambiance. Many of the guests got into the theme, wearing animal prints and safari outfits. “The Good Librations Committee outdid themselves again this year,” said Lorrie Hal-

Profits from the event will go toward bringing that goal one step closer.

National group honors program operated by WSOS In August, WSOS Vice President Ruthann House and Kerrie Carte, development specialist, accepted the 2011 Community Economic Development Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award for the Green Ohio/Weatherization Works Corps program WSOS administered. The award was conferred on WSOS by the national Community Action Partnership (CAP) and is one of four the CAP awarded to agencies across the nation. According to Stacy Flowers, director of Community Economic Development at CAP, only one point separated the winning applications from the others. “The competition was serious,” she said. “I am in awe of the amazing projects in our network.” WSOS administered this program for the past two years and it included operating the program within WSOS and at several community action agencies throughout Ohio. The Green Ohio/Weatherization Works Corps program allowed more than 130 young adults to learn the processes and techniques necessary for weatherizing homes. During the program, the youth weatherized 1,648 homes around Ohio. WSOS operates the weatherization program in
Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa, Seneca, Erie, and Huron counties. The 2011 award was presented during CAP’s annual convention held in San Francisco this year. In addition, WSOS President/CEO Neil McCabe and Carte made presentations at the conference that explained how other community action agencies could operate a similar program. Their presentation was titled “Green Jobs Clinic - When it comes to green, are you green? Have you started a green program and are looking for ways to improve?” Over the past year CAP has researched these questions through listening sessions, case studies, and site visits that included WSOS. Key findings from the research and oneon-one sessions at the organizations profiled in the case studies were shared at the convention sessions where McCabe and Carte made presentations. For information on weatherization or other programs operated by WSOS, call 419-334-8911, or toll free at 1-800-775-9767, or visit us at our website, www.wsos.org
military veteran speakers. Women have performed a vital role in all military services throughout history. They also have significantly different health care needs from male veterans among both the young as well as the aging veteran population. Women veterans may also have post-traumatic stress not only from combat but sexual trauma as well. The department’s Advisory Committee on Women Veterans serves to bring women together to share experiences and resources on these issues, and connect women to organizations that can help. The bi-annual Women Veterans Conference provides a vital forum to network with veterans of today’s conflicts and all eras dating back to World War II. The conference provides women veterans the opportunity to not only learn more about these challenges, but also the resources and strategies available to overcome them. The last conference, held in 2009, brought together more than 700 veterans. The Ottawa County Veterans Service Office is providing transportation to county veterans in support of the Ohio Women Veterans Conference. To reserve a space, call 419898-2089. Ohio Women Veterans Conference coming up The Ohio Department of Veterans Services is teaming with the VA Healthcare System of Ohio to host the Ohio Women Veterans Conference on Saturday, Oct. 8. The conference is in recognition of the fact that women veterans face circumstances different from their male counterparts particularly in regard to connecting these veterans with the benefits they’ve earned. The conference will be held at the Aladdin Shrine Center, located at 3850 Stelzer Road, Columbus. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the conference gets under way at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 per person. “Over 60,000 Ohio women have made the selfless sacrifices necessary to protect and defend this nation,” said Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director Tom Moe. “But many are unaware of the benefits they’ve earned. We also know that there are other unique factors that have had an impact not only on their service but the rest of their lives, and we want to be sure to give them the information and the support they need and deserve.” This year’s conference features keynote speaker Janice Nark, a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Storm. A professional motivational speaker, Ms. Nark shared a podium with dignitaries ranging from General Colin Powell to President Bill Clinton. Her message focuses on finding control in the midst of chaos. Conference attendees will also hear from a range of other professional military and

PORT CLINTON 0 — GENOA 57
Redskins prepare for homecoming Rockets By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher Since the Genoa Comets have become a regional powerhouse, even local Ottawa County teams don’t really look forward to meeting them. Such was the case again last Friday night when the Comets played “wipe out” with the Port Clinton Redskins, leaving True Lay Stadium with a 57-0 win. However, Coach Toby Hammond had some positives to mention: “We played really well early,” the coach said Monday. “We made some execution mistakes that really cost us.” The Redskins also played with three veterans they were counting on heavily this season, who missed the first two games due to suspensions. One of them was two-way starter Addison Rospert, who was slated to be the PC starting quarterback. “It was the first game back for all three, so they each had some good points and bad points,” said
Hammond. “Playing QB on Friday night is a lot different that Saturday mornings.” One player the coach singled out for exceptional play so far this season is defensive end Chounard Stransky. “He has really played well the first three games.” Genoa steamrolled the Redskins taking advantage of PC mistakes. They went into the locker room at 28-0 and the Comets continued to pour it on behind the running of Kyle Nutter. Much of the fourth quarter was played by underclassmen getting some experience under the Friday night lights. This Friday night the Redskins play Edison for the annual Homecoming game and the Redskins’ first Sandusky Bay Conference game of the season. Edison lost to Wellington last week 25-7. “They are a young team,” said Hammond. “They have two physical running backs and a good running quarterback. We can’t fall asleep because they will

Some like the increase in school spirit, some don’t care for the distractions that it creates.
“I think it depends on the kid,” said Hammond. “Some are more concerned with all the activities and forget about executing the game plan. It is always something you try to get through during the week.”
By J. PATRICK EAKEN Oak Harbor trailed Eastwood 21-14 midway through the second quarter, but the Eagles pulled away for a 52-14 non-league victory at Freedom Field Friday. Eastwood scored first on a 70-yard run by Kyle Dierker just one minute and 21 seconds into the game. Derek Snowden added the conversion kick for the Eagles. Then, the Eagles struck again on a 67-yard run by Zach Konkle with 8:54 remaining in the first quarter, and with Snowden’s kick, Eastwood led 14-0. But Oak Harbor returned

BY J. PATRICK EAKEN Danbury’s Lucas Kennedy scored on a one-yard run with 9:02 remaining in the first half to bring the Lakers to within a touchdown Friday against Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic, but the Panthers eventually pulled away for a 42-13 victory. Brandon Bahnsen scored Danbury’s second touchdown on a 3-yard run with 1:37 remaining in the game. Freshman place
kicker James Dorko added the conversion kick. The Panthers scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters to improve to 2-1, plus SMCC pulled off a safety for two points 54 seconds into the second half. It was Danbury’s first loss of the season as the Lakers drop to 2-1. Danbury begins Toledo Area Athletic Conference play this Friday night by hosting Cardinal
Stritch (0-3). The Cardinals have lost to the Cleveland Knights club football team (34-0), Woodmore (49-6), and Lakota (34-26). Cardinal Stritch is led by firstyear head coach and former Lake coach Jim Kubuske. Last year Stritch was 4-6 and 2-4 in the TAAC, and they return seven letter winners from that team, including two offensive starters and two defensive starters. They use multiple offensive schemes
and a 4-3 defense. Leading the team is 6-foot-1, 175 pound senior quarterback Mike Blazevich, who plays corner back on defense. Blazevich threw for 593 yards and five touchdowns in his junior season. Christian Peters is the featured running back and also a linebacker, and junior running back Zach Denomy and tight end Trent Fuller also contribute to the offense.
