Leone is next mayor
Red Kettle campaign kicks off The goal has been set for Ottawa County’s Red Kettle campaign this holiday season. Capt. Steven Lopes, Northwest Ohio Regional Coordinator for the Salvation Army, was on hand at the Red Kettle kickoff breakfast last week to deliver the number: $55,000. Last year, the bell-ringing campaign brought in more than $53,000 to help nearly 1,600 families and 5,500 individuals within the county. Indicators show that need is up around the region and with that, the goal was raised 3 percent. Also announced at the breakfast was the kickoff of “Be a Shield,” a branding campaign for volunteers and donors to show off their support. “I hope you’ll consider making it known to your family and friends that you are a shield for those in crisis,” Lopes said.

Vince Leone is congratulated by his supporters Tuesday night after finding out he defeated incumbent Debbie Hymore-Tester in the race for Port Clinton mayor.
Voters approve PC fire levy; Cole Hatfield joins council BY ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor City Councilman Vince Leone won the race for Port Clinton Mayor by defeating incumbent Debbie Hymore-Tester. According to unofficial results released by the Ottawa County Board of Elections, the vote was 1,057 to 909. “I’ve got some great friends who helped me a lot,” Leone said, minutes after hearing the news. “It’s all their hard work.” Leone and his supporters — sporting bright orange campaign T-shirts — gathered at the Port Clinton Knights of Columbus hall Tuesday evening and waited for the announcement. Shortly after 9 p.m., Vince’s wife Suzi pointed at him from across the room with a giant smile
and said simply, “you won!” The crowd of supporters erupted in cheers and surrounded the next mayor with hugs, tears and congratulations. “I’ve really got to get to work,” he said. “It feels good.” In the race for Port Clinton City Council, Democrat Cole Hatfield garnered the votes needed to join Mike Snider and Debra Benko in at-large seats. “I’m more relieved than anything,” Hatfield said at the K. of C. “I’m excited to get to work.” He said his plans include helping businesses in downtown Port Clinton to succeed and developing an entrepreneurship

In this post Sept. 11 society we now find ourselves, we have all made some changes in the way we, as Americans, conduct our lives. Some of those changes may be perceived as positive and to others some of these changes negative. However, Police Chief Rob Hickman and I would like to highlight what we strongly believe to be one of the positives outcomes of that horrific day. In many circles there seems to be a better understanding of the sacrifices made by the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. For instance, service men and women walking through airports still re-
ceive applause, smiles and waves even though 9-11-01 was 10 years ago. As well, in many towns and villages across the country the sounds of fire and police sirens can be heard leading a caravan to announce the return of another American hero back to their family, friends and the comforts of home after their time in the armed forces is complete. Chief Hickman and I have been trying to obtain a list of individual service members from the City of Port Clinton currently serving our country. However, for many reasons, such a list does not exist. Therefore, together we are asking for your help. With as little as 24 hours notice, the PCFD and PCPD would be honored
to provide BRIGHT & LOUD escorted services from the city limits to the home or meeting place of a returning soldier, Marine or airman. Again, we can only provide this service within city limits and on a limited basis in Portage Township. Please contact Police Chief Hickman at 419-734-3121 or myself, Fire Chief Kent Johnson, at 419-734-3430 to discuss arrangements. If nothing else, please let your family member in the service know that they have the ABSOLUTE support of the members of the PCPD and PCFD. Sincerely, Kent Johnson Fire Chief City of Port Clinton
Sheriff Levorchick names administrative staff Sheriff Shephen J. Levorchick recently announced that his administrative staff has now been set and the Ottawa County Sheriff ’s Office will move forward in a direction of positive law enforcement. Since taking office, Levorchick appointed Jeffrey Hickman as Chief Deputy. Hickman has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience. According to the sheriff, Hickman’s ability to work with the public as well as the Sheriff ’s office staff is an asset
not often matched within the law enforcement community. Current Patrol Sergeant Brad M. York fills the Captain of Operations position. York replaced Olen Martin who began his service in that position earlier in 2011. Martin has accepted a position with another law enforcement agency. York brings approximately 25 years of law enforcement experience to his new position. His working knowledge of the patrol division, as well as his exceptional
working relationship with all local law enforcement agencies will enhance his ability as captain. Director of Administration Rhonda St. Clair and Director of Finance Callie Kihlken will remain in the positions that they held under former Sheriff Robert Bratton. Levorchick said he is xcited about the future of the Sheriff ’s Office and the positive law enforcement service it will provide to the citizens and visitors of Ottawa County.

Or $2970 when buying a case of 12 750ml bottles Whenever we approach one of our centennial Lots we always look for a wine that represents the pinnacle of what we do here at Cameron Hughes Wine – deliver incredible value. Lot 300 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet is our best wine of the year grown in the greatest vineyards of Oakville, Rutherford and Stags Leap with incredible provenance from one of California’s most acclaimed wineries. Given that this producer doesn’t sell a bottle of wine under $100 I believe this wine is an exceptional value at $32.99/bottle. Lot 300 is nothing short of profound: black fruit essence and crème de cassis is interlaced with exotic spice and liquid minerals. Silken texture and fine-grained
tannins provide for a breathtaking palate. Deftly and perfectly balanced, this wine showcases the beautiful fruit and alluvial tannins of Oakville and Rutherford. While this wine is just beginning to emerge from the bottle already you can tell it is dazzling stuff and definitely a cellar candidate. Lot 300 is enjoyable now but be sure to Decant in the near term. We have less wine this year than last, so if cult quality Napa Cabernet is your thing, you’ll want to move quickly on this wine.

At the Republican party’s event at Mango Mama’s, Snider said he had mixed feelings about the results. “I’m happy to remain on City Council, but we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us and I’m afraid it just got a lot more difficult,” he said. The other big issue for Port Clinton voters was the renewal of the fire levy which more than two-thirds of the voters approved. “I’m ecstatic the fire levy passed,” Snider said.

The students and staff of Bataan Memorial Elementary School invite members of the community to their Bataan Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the school gymnasium. The ceremony, which is traditionally held in May, has been moved to Veterans Day due to the facility construction schedule. Bataan Day honors the 32 men from Port Clinton who participated in the Battle of Bataan and the Bataan Death March of World War II. The ceremony helps the students remember the history of their school name and realize the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers and others like them who fought and continue to fight for their country and our freedom. The Ottawa County Republican Women will be putting up American flags before the ceremony around the area of Bataan School.

The Elders of Jazz are indeed elders from Presbyterian Churches on the west side of Cleveland, plus Kay McIntosh, pianist, who now lives in Port Clinton. This group celebrates the roots of jazz based on the spirituals and gospel songs played by the early New Orleans street bands. While this group usually plays in the greater Cleveland area, in recent years they have played at Lakeside for worship in Hoover Auditorium as well as a Sunday night concert at the Gazebo. The Elders of Jazz have also played as part of the summer concert series on Put-in-Bay in front of the Perry Monument. All are welcome to join in this Sunday morning jazz worship experience. Firelands Presbyterian Church is located at 2626 E. Harbor Road in Port Clinton. For questions, call 419-734-6211.

THERESA, the first nun—sweet & scatterbrained ANGELICA, the second nun—gracious & intelligent BENJAMIN, an inventive young man—attractive & audacious BOZO, a police officer, lowest rank—fourth grade elementary education TANIA, an art student—young & beguiling Faced with the responsibility of looking after their orphaned niece, these two middle- aged sisters have settled on the idea of impersonating begging nuns in order to send their niece to an art school in Europe, but as the play begins they have run into double trouble: an agile cat burglar is about to steal their illgotten gains, and a suspicious policeman has followed Theresa home with her collection bucket. However all is not as desperate as it seems; the young thief is a medical student who steals to pay his tuition, while the cop is not above taking what he can on the side. So, the four join forces for some inspired larceny. Then the niece shows up unannounced. The sisters now have to “go straight”, which means going broke, and all sorts of hilarious misunderstandings then occur. In the end Tania is not what her aunts believed her to be; she really is an accomplished art forger who has considerable earnings piling up interest in a Swiss bank account. WARNING When investing, ‘face to face’ beats fingers on a keyboard
SPECIAL FIRING NOTICE 2011
These days, you can purchase just about anything you want on the Internet. However, you can still benefit from a human, face-to-face experience for some purchases — such as your investments. And that’s why you may want to work with a financial professional. Unlike a computer interface, a financial professional will take the time to truly know your situation today — and then help you make adjustments tomorrow. Let’s first look at two key areas a financial professional will consider today: • Your risk tolerance — By asking the right questions, a financial professional can help you determine if you’re a moderate, conservative or aggressive investor and then recommend those investments that are suitable for your risk tolerance. • Your time horizon — If you’re saving for a down payment on a new home you expect to purchase within two or three years, you may want an investment that offers significant preservation of principal. But if you’re saving for retirement, and you’re three decades away from it, you’ll likely need investments that offer the potential for growth. Your
financial advisor can help you choose the mix of short- and long-term investments that can help you make progress toward all your goals. Now, let’s look at the types of milestones that a financial professional can help you with as your life progresses: • New child — When you bring a new child into your life, you also add new responsibilities. Do you have sufficient life insurance? Do you plan on helping the child pay for college? If so, what college funding vehicles should you consider? A financial professional can help you answer these questions. • New spouse — Whether you’re getting married for the first time, or you’re remarrying, you’ll have to reconcile your financial picture with that of your new spouse. A financial professional can review both your situations and possibly recommend ways for you to reduce debt, eliminate redundancies in your investment portfolios and consolidate insurance coverage. • Career change — When you change jobs, you may have to make many investment-related decisions: Should you move the assets from your old employer’s 401(k) to an IRA? Or should you roll over your old
401(k) to your new employer’s plan, if a rollover is allowed? Knowing your options when you leave your job can help you make the right choice for your retirement savings. A qualified financial professional can help you review and understand your rollover options. • Retirement — Once you retire, you’ll have several issues to consider: How much can you withdraw from your investments each year? From which accounts? Should you rebalance your portfolio to provide more potential sources of income? What about the transfer of your wealth? A financial professional who is familiar with your situation can help you make the right moves to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. So, when you really want to invest, leave the “virtual” world behind and connect with a financial professional — someone who has gained insight into your individual needs and who has the experience and expertise to help you build, maintain and adjust a portfolio that can help you move toward your goals. nnn

Terra marketing dept. honored The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations has recognized Terra State Community College for outstanding work in marketing. At its District 3 regional conference in October in Detroit, NCMPR awarded Terra a bronze Medallion Award in the single ad category for its television advertisement titled, “Shower Scene.” “Our fall enrollment campaign provided vignettes that portray access to classes and faculty as convenient and flexible in a humorous and exaggerated fashion,” said Mary Mc Cue, director of marketing and auxiliary services. “The overriding message is the convenience factor provided by day, evening, weekend and online classes.” The commercials were a collaborative effort between Terra and Hanson Inc. of Toledo and included Terra faculty member Michael Shirtz as the professional voice over. Humor was definitely the medium. “Humor, fun and levity are powerful communications tools that tell the marketing story to the viewing audience creatively,” Mc Cue said. “All marketing is about satisfying the needs of the customer. And, in this case, the customer here happens to be current students and future students interested in a convenient college schedule, one that revolves around the student.” The Medallion Awards are modeled after the national NCMPR Paragon Awards to recognize outstanding achievement in college communications. Terra has a history of winning both Medallion and Paragon awards despite competing against colleges with larger marketing departments in major metropolitan areas such as Cleveland Columbus, Chicago and Indianapolis. NCMPR is the only organization of its kind that exclusively represents marketing and public relations professionals at community and technical colleges. The organization has more than 1,550 members from more than 650 colleges across the United States, Canada and other countries. Terra will now compete at the national level going up against the largest community colleges in North America.
