Major Regional Developer to TELLTALES Market Lake Erie Business Park BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

Many of you remember the “old days” when we had a local radio station here …WRWR. I am sad to tell you that an old sidekick from my radio days, Tom Severino, passed away recently after a battle with cancer. Tom made a career out of radio after leaving Port Clinton in the mid-1970s and did very well. When he passed on, he was vice president and general manager of Emmis Broadcasting in Indianapolis. I got the news from an old WRWR fan, Dean Fick, who listened when he was a young man growing up in Marblehead. ——— We had 125 entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Fran Spofford, of Catawba, who found Wylie hiding in the Portside Inn ad on page 12A. Fran wins a $20 gift certificate to Monsoon Lagoon. Our “Win it on the Web” contest winner is Karen Murphy, of Port Clin- ton, chosen from 57 entries. Karen wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. Wylie will try to hide again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office in the Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill. Or, you can click on the Find Wylie icon on our Web site, www.thebeacon.net. Also, click on the “Win it on the Web” icon to register for a free gas card. ——— This Saturday there will be a very special “Tech Expo” at the Nor’Easter Club off Ohio 53 North from 1 to 6 p.m. One of the items featured will be a new waterproof flat-screen TV designed specifically for use on a boat! ——— Friday, July 10, is a special Memorial Service in remembrance of Kenny Young, the long-time proprietor of Young’s Floor Covering. Ken had many friends in the area, and the remembrance event will be held at Port Clinton Yacht Club from 5 to 8 p.m. ——— Also on Friday, The Port Clinton Council 1750 of the Knights of Columbus will hold its monthly perch fry at the Denny Bergeman K. of C. Hall at 109 E. Perry St. downtown. Delicious perch with all the trimmings will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. ——— This Sunday, July 12, is the Annual Arts and Crafts show sponsored by the Port Clinton Women’s Club and the Kiwanis Barbecue at the Shelter House at Lakeview Park. Kiwanis will be serving the famous barbecue beef, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw, chips and cookies from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ——— The Humane Society of Ottawa County will host a run/walk event at Gem Beach this Sunday, July 12. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with the race starting at 8:30 a.m. ——— The Great Lakes Chapter of the Matthews Boat Owners Association will host its annual “Float-In” of classic yachts July 21-23 at The Crew’s Nest in Put-in-Bay. Former Matthews Boat Company employees, who made these classics in Port Clinton from 1908 to 1974, are encouraged to attend. All former employees will receive a free ride to The Bay aboard the Miller Ferry on Wednesday, July 22. For information, call Bob Reynolds at 419-732-7858 or Laurie Schultz at 419-732-1353.

PERRYSBURG — Dillin Corp. — the developer of Levis Commons — is taking over marketing and development of the Lake Erie Business Park in Port Clinton. The 436-acre site located on Ohio 2, has made a commitment to manufacturing and commercial property growth in Ottawa County through implementation of several alternative energy initiatives “We’re interested in unique properties that stand out in the marketplace,” says Larry Dillin, master developer of Levis Commons and newly announced master developer for the Lake Erie Business Park. “The current owners, Jim McKinney and Dave Fahrbach, have made a commitment to renewable energy. Dillin would like to help them reposition the property from a marketing standpoint and help continue in the creation of Ohio’s first industrial park fueled in significant measure by renewable energy.” The park, most of which is available for redevelopment, has proven to support the installation of utility-scale wind turbines and solar-powered assets. Since August, a 60-panel 13.4kW solar electric panel was installed to partially feed Northern Manufacturing, a

current tenant at the park. The power will also soon feed Crown Battery. The 17-acre rooftop of building 460 and the existing concrete pads as well as the never-ending supply of wind from Lake Erie provide promise for the future of additional renewable energy sources to help power the development.

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Crown Battery has been a manufacturing staple of Fremont since 1926. However, some of its principals have strong roots in Ottawa County, which may have been the impetus for the creation of the company’s new Renewable Energy Center at the Lake Erie Business Park. It was all about the unveiling of the first commer- Hawk cially viable Wind Cube, a giant rotating wind turbine within a giant cube engineered to improve the performance of standard wind turbines to generate electrical power. Green Energy Technologies officially unveiled Kelley the new high tech contraption Monday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Lake Erie Business Park that now sits atop the new Crown Battery Renewable Energy Center. Hal Hawk, president of Crown Battery, said the company’s new facility will use renewable energy in the formation charging of batteries, the last step

in their manufacturing process, as well as develop new technologies for energy storage markets around the world. “To better position the Wind Cube as a visible example of renewable energy, we’ve mounted a large LED screen on the building to display real-time data associated with the project, including wind speed, kilowatts of energy being generated by the device and total carbon reduction,” he said. Hawk is married to the former Diane Warnke, who once owned a clothing store in downtown Port Clinton and is the daughter of former Port Clinton High School band director, Earl Warnke. The couple now lives in Fremont where they are very active in the community there. Crown Battery’s vice president of sales is Mark Kelley, whose father came to Port Clinton in the mid-1960s with UniRoyal when it took over the Erie Industrial Park after the Federal Government closed the Erie Army Depot in 1965. Green Energy Technologies is based in Akron, and is manufacturing the idea that was invented by John Fedor, a retired tool designer from Eastlake. Fedor noted that the design used by the cube to funnel wind into the turbine blades, actually doubles the wind velocity when it hits the blades and quadruples the amount of energy created, making it significantly more efficient. “Crown Battery’s Renewable Energy Center is

the perfect location for the WindCube,” said Green Energy Technologies president, Mark Cironi. The Cube was installed by Roth Brothers, Inc. of Youngstown, which will also provide 24/7 monitoring of energy usage using an online remote system specifically designed for this particular turbine. The WindCube is easily visible from Ohio 2 west of Port Clinton.

Maybe Next Year Inaugural Lake Erie Boat Week Event Postponed Until 2010

The inaugural “Lake Erie Boat Week” event, scheduled for Sept. 1-6 in and around Port Clinton has officially been postponed until the summer of 2010. “There were numerous factors that went into my decision to postpone Lake Erie Boat Week this year,” stated Janie Vogel, event director for Lake Erie Boat Week. “I worked tirelessly to try to pull off Financial Focus ..............2B a one-of-a-kind Real Estate Transfers .....8B tourist event for the community and reSports .............................4B gion in general that Ottawa Outdoors...........5B would have brought Classifieds .................9-10B approximately $5 million to $10 milYellow Page Directory .11B lion to the local NorthCoast Live ....See Tab

economy, but the support wasn’t there for the 2009 date in Port Clinton. The state of the economy during this time did not help. I was unbelievably close to pulling this event off after only four months of work on the event in that lo-

cation, but my original business model for ‘Lake Erie Boat Week’ was being compromised, so the difficult decision had to be made to postpone this event until next year.” Details are already being addressed to continue “Lake Erie Boat Week” in 2010. The www.LakeErieBoatWeek. com official event site will remain active throughout the coming year, with updates on progress for next year’s event — including dates and location — posted soon. Vogel is extremely grateful for the support she received throughout these past months, stating, “I want to thank so many people who got behind my efforts in producing ‘Lake Erie Boat Week,’ and hope they will continue to support me in planning for the 2010 event.”

SoundOff Dear Editor, Mrs. Andrea Dalrymple, third-grade teacher at Jefferson School, and her husband David would like to thank her colleagues, students and members of the community who participated in Hat Day as well as the many meals provided over the past months. I would like to thank my family and everyone for all the prayers, cards and support. I have been blessed to come from a great community! Irene Solis Dear Editor, Why? Why? Why? That is the question I ask over and over again. Why do some people think it’s OK to dump a puppy along the road or to dump kittens in Kroger parking lot and in the Goodwill box located there? I receive so many calls for them: in Dumpsters, along the road after they have been thrown from a moving car with head injuries, broken legs, etc. I am the humane officer for Ottawa County, i.e. cruelty investigator, and what I see is appalling! As we all know, kittens and puppies are cute but they do grow up and if not spayed or neutered, reproduce, reproduce. I have had some people tell me they thought it was better for their cat or dog to have at least one litter ‌ no, it’s not. The Humane Society has a very affordable program for spaying or neutering your pet. Call 419-734-5191 to find out the details. Prices are all under $100 and much lower for cats. So, for information to pass along: abandoning or hurting or shooting a cat or dog is punishable by law. If anyone ever sees an animal dumped out, please get the license plate number and report it to the Humane Society of Ottawa County or the sheriff ’s office at 419-734-4404. You will remain anonymous. Nancy Silva Ottawa County humane officer Dear Editor, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur made national news recently when she burned the midnight oil until 3 a.m. loading the horrendous Cap and Trade legislation with 340 extra pages and hundreds of millions of dollars in pork. Then she watched as it was jammed through the Congress once again with no members reading or understanding the consequences of the bill. For that she actually had the stones to congratulate herself. I wonder how many voters will recognize the effects of this when they see their utility bills double, their everyday needs skyrocket and their jobs disappear offshore. There are of course winners such as General Electric, who lobbied hard and spent million who will stake their claim in billions and the pied piper of the global warming hoax Al Gore estimated to cash in on about 100 million. There is hope that this legislation will be blocked in the Senate, but with Sherrod Brown and George Voinovich doing the blocking it will be like the Detroit Lions linemen leading the interference. Neither have a clue that they have a playbook called the Constitution. I would still recommend you contact them fast and often only because I believe in miracles and it is a miracle that is needed if we are to save this republic. Jim Boehm Port Clinton Dear Editor, Congresswoman Kaptur should be applauded for voting to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and help grown a clean energy economy. Now is our opportunity to transition to a clean energy economy and stop global warming. Our company, North Coast Wind & Power has developed clean energy projects throughout Ohio. We have installed numerous wind turbines on homes

and businesses throughout the region and are continuing to expand our business. We have proven the possibilities of clean energy that can deliver new jobs, help grow the economy and reduce Ohio’s air pollution. Northwest Ohio is now the home of three solar facilities — First Solar, Xunlight and Williard Kelsey — and many manufacturers are beginning production of much-needed turbine components. The potential is out there to restore the workforce of NW Ohio. The bill that passed the House is a critical first step, and now it moves to the U.S. Senate. We urge Sens. Brown and Voinovich to strengthen and pass the bill to deliver on the promise that clean energy holds to recharge our economy, put more Ohioans back to work and protect future generations from global warming Linda S. Woods, Controller North Coast Wind & Power, LLC Dear Editor, On behalf of the entire Port Clinton Area 4th of July Committee, we would like to thank everyone for your assistance and support in presenting the community what we believe to be a first-class Independence Day Celebration. There is absolutely no way this day could have happened through the efforts of one person. This was truly a community effort. Everyone had a hand in making the events of July 4th a reality. From the pancake eaters at Second Street Diner; to the nickels, quarters, ones and fives dropped in the Bucks for Booms buckets; from the Port Clinton High School Leadership Council and their call at 7:30 a.m. with a substantial donation; to the Texas Holdem’ Poker Players at the Elks Lodge; from the participants in and sponsors of the Firecracker Cutie Contest and Parade Participants; to the area Service Clubs (Elks, Eagles, Lions, Kiwanis and VFW) that gave not only money but time to lend a hand; from the various city services: police, North Central EMS, street and fire departments who donated more than 100 total man hours of service on July 4th as the fireworks display was being set up, launched and taken down safely; to the individuals, families and businesses that dropped off checks and cash at the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce office; from the Port Clinton Senior Center for organizing, promoting and hosting the Ice Cream Social in the lawn of Trinity Church; to the guest speaker at the Adams Street Experience Mel Maurer who put us all in a heightened state of Patriotic Spirit; from the Chamber of Commerce staff who kept our books; to the thousands that lined the shoreline and sat on boats for the fireworks display; from WPCR/PortClintonRadio.com that broadcast music in conjunction with the fireworks; to the two DJs that donated their time to keep the Water Works Park crowd entertained for hours leading up to the fireworks — Memorylane Music and Retro Mobile Music; from the grand marshal — Dr. Daryl Hablitzel (retired) — to the 4th of July Planning Committee: Judy Smith, Willard Smith, Kim Sedlak, Donna Becker and Greg Peifer; and, finally to my wife Mary Ann and daughter Haley for worrying right along side of me as both planning time and event money was running short. I thank you all for making July 4th, 2009, a wonderful community event. Plans are under way for July 4th, 2010. I know the calendar will get us there in eleven months and 20-some days. Keep an eye out for fundraising events and other tidbits of news about planning efforts for next year. Happy Birthday America! Mike Snider Chairman, Port Clinton Area 4th of July Committee Dear Editor, I wanted to let you know that I will not be seeking reelection to a third term on the Port Clinton Board of Education this fall. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my two terms on the board, but for a variety of reasons, I will not be on the ballot this fall. Providing our children a quality education in these different economic times is certainly challenging. Wehenkel encourages members of the community to consider accepting this challenge and seek election to the board. Thanks, Walter Wehenkel

Beacon Bits I’ve been reading an interesting book. Called “Citizen-in-Chief, The Second Lives of the American Presidents,” this book outlines BY VIRGINIA PARK what happened to most U.S. Presidents after leaving the Oval Office. Authors Leonard Bernardo and Jennifer Weiss have researched money mattes, book deals, the lecture circuit and other details of the private lives of these leaders — both in modern and historic times. The book is a real learning experience. I’ve also just read “Me,” the autobiography of Katharine Hepburn. It is loaded with pictures, many of which are of famous people or are of scenes from her motion pictures. I skipped back to the part about Spencer Tracy. Tracy and Hepburn made nine movies together and were magical — both on and off the screen. She truly loved “Spence,” as she sometimes called him and modified many aspects of her life to be with him over the course of many years. --------Did you know that Jim Crawford, who has been Director of the Ida Rupp Library in Port Clinton for 10 years, is leaving us? He will assume a new job as director of the Lakewood Public Library. He says the decision to leave was not an easy one as he has many friends here and thinks Ottawa County is a very special place. Jim, you will be greatly

missed! Jim wrote to tell me that the library has two new books that have local ties: “Honor Untarnished: A West Point Graduate’s Memoir of World War II” is by Gen. Donald V. Bennett who was born in Lakeside. He won the Distinguished Service Cross and two Purple Hearts for his wartime service. “Chicken Frog” is a children’s book, beautifully illustrated by Kimberly Soderberg, a professional artist. Kimberly is the daughter-in-law of Dave and Patty Soderberg, of Port Clinton. Both books may be checked out. --------The Ottawa County Farmers Union hosts its annual picnic at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Graytown Park. The public is invited to come to hear about liability and health insurance available through membership in the Farmers Union. State president Roger Wise, of Fremont, will be the speaker. Bring a potluck dish and come to enjoy the fellowship. Phyllis Garn, at 419-898-0329, can provide more information if you need it. --------Friends of the Ida Rupp Library’s annual book sale will be Aug. 7-8. Beginning time is 9:30 both days; sale ends at 5 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday. Leftover books are free from 1:15 to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The sale will take place in the community room of the library, 310 Madison St. The library is already geared up for its fall Cinema Arts Series. Showings are on Fridays at 7 p.m. beginning Sept. 4. Stop by the library to get a schedule. One of my very favorite movies, “Out of Africa,” will be shown Nov. 20 but there are many other good ones as well. And the cost is right — it’s free! --------Melissa (Reinheimer) Bucher is pictured as a young girl playing her piano on the front page of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society newsletter for July. Recently Melissa donated her beautiful and historically valuable piano to the society’s museum in the village of Put-in-Bay. The piano was in the estate of John Brown Jr. (son of the famous abolitionist), who lived on South Bass Island. Steve and Joy Urge bought the Brown house and the piano was included in the purchase. They later donated the piano to an island charity auction: Frank and Lynette Reinheimer bought it for their daughter Melissa. The Reinheimers moved it to their home on Second Street, Port Clinton, and had the interior refurbished. Melissa donated it to the museum, the Miller Boat Line generously transported it back to the island (courtesy of Mary Ann Market) and Craig Dieterich tuned it. The old piano is now a wonderful addition to the museum’s new Brown-Alexander Actor’s Colony display. An auction (featuring items donated to the island historical society) takes place Saturday, July 11, at the Crescent Pavilion at Put-in-Bay. Included for sale is a 1966 Plymouth Valiant. Someone will definitely bid on that — it will make a great “island car.” --------Well, we are probably about at the end of the mayfly sea-

son. There are still a few hanging around. But lightning bugs have now made an appearance and so summer must truly be here in all its glory. --------Did you know there is a food safety hotline? It is sponsored by the Ohio State Food Industries Center and now has a new sponsor — the Kroger Company. If you have a question about food and safety, call 1-800-752-2751 and just ask. Questions will be answered by people trained at Ohio State University. Personnel will be available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. After hours, leave a message and someone will call back. The Kroger Company recommends these safety hints: • Chill foods promptly and keep cold foods cold. • Wash your hands and preparation surfaces thoroughly with soap and warm water. • Keep fresh meat away from other foods to avoid spreading bacteria. • Use a food thermometer to make sure foods are cooked properly. For information about the hotline, call Amy McCormick at 614-898-3619. And here is some more information about food choices. This comes from a pamphlet published by “Wellness Councils of America.” It gave information about making the right choices when eating at fast food places. Nearly all the fast food outlets have some healthy things to eat … so just select those things that are better for you — such as a baked potato rather than french fries. In addition, here are some “healthy” fast food strategies: • Avoid adding fats to your food (such as mayo, cheese, sauces, etc.). • Don’t “super-size” anything. Eat the smaller portion. • East slowly; usually when you order fast food, you are in a hurry. Try to slow down even though you need to rush back to work. Actually eating slowly will save you fatigue later in the day, so the pamphlet says. (I didn’t know that.) • Don’t take free refills on soda (pop); soda is loaded with sugar (and sometimes with caffeine). There is not much about a soda that is actually good for you. Stick to water or unsweetened iced tea for a better choice. --------Here’s an update on the Salvation Army’s trip taking kids to Camp NEOSA: Twenty children and their chaperons headed out on a chartered bus on June 17 for Carrolton. They took along snacks and movies and while at camp enjoyed a week of swimming, canoeing, hiking, sports, crafts and other fun activities. It sounded great. --------Maureen Saponari sent a note to say that the Salvation Army is now taking applications for its Tools for School program. And the unit is also looking for bell ringers for their Christmas in July project. We’ll be seeing those red kettles around town on July 24-25. Call Maureen at 419732-2769 if you can help at any of the three sites: Port Clinton Community Market, Port Clinton Krogers and the Jet Express. Proceeds from the kettles help needy people with rent, utilities, food, prescription medicines, clothing and emergency shelter. --------Here is something I’m going to try. The Ohio Farm Bureau and The Bob Evans Farms are sponsoring a recipe contest until July 22 for Farm Bureau members. Each recipe must utilize a Bob Evans product and a locally grown grocery product. I’ve got a good idea for this so I’m going to enter the contest. I’ll let you know the results. --------Don’t forget to recycle materials that may be re-used in the future. Paper, metal and glass — all these can be re-purposed for another time. Recycling helps save our good earth. Be watching the newspapers for special recycling events at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds. You can get rid of your tires, household hazardous waste, appliances, computers, televisions and lead acid batteries. If you want to know dates, just call 1-888-850-7224. It’s toll-free.

Senior Lunches at the Fair The 2009 Senior Citizen’s Day at the Ottawa County Fair will be held Wednesday, July 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. In order to receive your free lunch that day, make your reservations by calling the toll free Senior Resources Info Line at 1-877-888-9445 or locally at 419-732-7245. There are a limited number of meals available, so call early. Please leave your name, address and phone number to expedite the process. If you have any questions, please contact Senior Resources at 1-877-898-6459 or 419-898-6459 Admission to the fair is also free for all senior citizens age 60 and older.

Around Ottawa County The River Front Live! Spirit of Hospitality Strikes a Chord with Two Guitarists Friday, July 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., we are pleased to have Jerry M. Davenport return to the River Front Live! “stage” located at the new North Jefferson Street Pier Pavilion in the downtown Port Clinton historic river front district. A local singer songwriter and lifelong native of Catawba Island, Jerry has been writing songs about love and life on the North Shore of Lake Erie and the Islands for the last seven years. He is nearing 100 original songs and has also written comedic parodies of several popular songs. His songs range from love to comedy. His style ranges from guitar strumming and harmonica to finger picking on “Going Back to the Islands.” “I love to play for the appreciative audiences, my music is unique and is perfectly suited to the open air water front venue,” says Jerry. On Saturday, July 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., we welcome back Brad Kepler, The Great Lakes Minstrel from Fremont, Ohio. “I am a part historian, part a folk singer and part humorist,” says Brad of his performance. The Great Lakes Minstrel

makes history more than stale dates and events. It’s an acoustic show of songs of history and life of long ago. The performers love to volunteer their time and talent to entertain Port Clinton’s year-long & Summer residents, as well as our weekend visitors, showing a true spirit of hospitality at the very delightful river front location at the gateway to the downtown, weather permitting. Have dinner at one of the downtown restaurants before or after the concert or grab a snack to enjoy during the concert, they know all about hospitality. The free River Front Live! outdoor concert series is sponsored by NeideckerLeVeck and Crosser Funeral Home and the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce. If interested in volunteering as a performer [easylistening only] or as a River Front Live! Representative, who is present during performances, names are being taken for next year’s schedule by calling 419-734-2397. Co-organizers are Mary Gordon and Kathy Jo Schweitzer.

Local Scout Earns Highest Rank Anthony Michael Monaco, a member of Boy Scout Troop 360 sponsored by Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton has earned his highest rank in Scouting: the Eagle Scout Rank. In order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, there are certain requirements that must be met. First, a scout has to earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, twelve of which are required by the National Office and nine of his own choosing. Anthony has earned 37 merit badges at this time. The Scout must also hold a leadership position within his Troop. Anthony has held the following offices: Order of the Arrow Representative, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and he currently serves as Assistant Junior Scoutmaster. The Scout must find a service project that benefits his community, his church or his sponsoring body. The Scout must have his project approved by the body that it benefits, the District Advancement Committee and his own Troop. After securing all of the required approvals, the Scout is then able to start the project. Anthony’s project consisted

of the development of a landscaped green space area and restoration of a wooden porch adjacent to the parish rectory of Immaculate Conception Church, located at 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton. The project was completed in the summer of 2008 and involved 623 hours of planning, design, fundraising and construction effort from many volunteers and contributors including fellow scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Troop 360, several parishioners, local contractors, material suppliers and individuals within the community. The project resulted in a pleasant seating area situated under a cedar pergola constructed over a stamped and dyed concrete walkway leading to the restored wooden porch which overlooks the entire green space area including a fountain. A special thank you is extended to all who generously volunteered or contributed to the project. An Eagle Court of Honor was convened on June 28 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton for the presentation of the Eagle Scout Rank to Anthony. Anthony is a senior at Port Clinton High School. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Teen PEP (Peers Educating Peers), Freshman Mentor and has held the office of Class Treasurer and Class President in high school. Anthony also enjoys participating in athletics having earned varsity letters in cross country, track & field and soccer. Anthony is a member of Immaculate Conception Church where he is an altar server, and presently works part-time during the summer months at the Catawba Island Club. Anthony is the son of Gino and Teresa Monaco.

Male Mentors Needed

Male Mentors 18 years and older who would like to make a difference in the life of a child are needed in the Oak Harbor and Port Clinton areas. Mentors share with a young person in such a way that inspires hope, drive and most of all, a sense of belonging with the comfort found in a caring adult-child mentoring relationship. The primary purpose of our program is to provide a oneon-one relationship with a supportive adult to those children who need the personal guidance and support that a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister can provide. The value of the pro-

gram lies in the personal relationship between the child and adult. The knowledge on the part of the child that somebody is interested in him/her as an individual, increases self-esteem, grades improve and helps keep them away from getting involved in drugs and alcohol. The agency’s professional staff supervises these matches. If you feel you would be a good mentor to a child who wants and needs an adult role model in his life, please contact our office at 419-354-2113. We will match you with a child whom we feel would be compatible as quickly as possible.

Car Wash Benefit The Danbury Cheerleaders will hold a benefit car wash Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Danbury High School parking lot behind the football field. Magistrate Wargo talk to Naval Sea Cadet Corps at Camp Perry Louis Wargo III, magistrate of the Ottawa County Municipal Court, addressed members of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps June 24 at Combined Marine Command, Camp Perry. Wargo spoke with the group about the types of cases that are heard in the municipal court on a daily basis. In addition, Wargo explained the court’s operation, its budget and its successful and innovative programs, including the mediation and intervention efforts.

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps includes both male and female cadets, age 15 to 18, from across the country. Corps classes were held at the Camp Perry Training Facilities June 19-30. The class curriculum for the first week centers upon police training incorporating classes on self defense, entering and searching a room, how to subdue a perpetrator and the legalities involved therein. In addition, classes have also centered on Homeland Security matters such as first response, hazmat, terrorist training, CPR and first aid.

“Ninety percent of the young men and women involved in this program go on to serve the public in areas of law enforcement or military, and are thus deserving of our support, said Port Clinton Police Chief Thomas Blohm. “Thanks and appreciation for their participation go out to all the area agencies including the Ottawa County Municipal and Common Pleas Courts, Port Clinton Police and Ottawa County Sheriff ’s departments, including the Special Response Team, Defense Tactic Program and

Canine Division, Drug Task Force, Ohio State Highway Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, Emergency Management Agency, North Central EMS and Fremont Police Department. For information concerning the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps programs, contact LTjg Robert Hoover, NSCC at 5355 Boneta Road, Medina, OH 44256 or at Hoover@Verizon.net. Any civil or community organization interested in scheduling a program with the Ottawa County Municipal Court should contact the Court at 419-734-4143.

With cannons blasting in the background, the residents of Edgewood Manor sat in chairs at the Hayes Presidential Center and enjoyed an outdoor 4th of July. The lawn was packed with people all sharing a love for their country as

the concert began with the singing of our National Anthem. The Firelands Symphony Concert Band performed an hour of patriotic music sprinkled with some oldies. “You’re a Grand Old Flag, “America the Beautiful and “Stars and Stripes

Forever were a few of the tunes with which the audience sang and clapped along. During the performance, the band did a salute to our armed forces. The theme song for each of the five branches of service was

played as veterans stood to be honored by the crowd. Edgewood resident, Donald Provonsil, who was an Army Corporal in the Korean War, stood with other soldiers as the audience clapped and waved their flags in the air.

When it comes to evaluating your portfolio’s performance, or even an individual investment, many people think “gains are good and losses are bad.” That’s fine unless you’re making an investment decision based on that approach. We believe, however, that a limited view of investment performance can lead to big mistakes. Using a disciplined approach when making investment decisions should help you avoid the following common mistakes, especially when the markets are performing poorly, and can help you work toward your long-term investment goals. 1. Evaluating Performance over a Short Period of Time People tend to buy investments that have performed well and sell those that have performed poorly over the short term. This habit of “buying when you feel good and selling when you feel bad” can be the equivalent of buying when prices are high and selling when prices are low. A study performed by Dalbar compared a “buy-and-hold investor” with the “average investor” who tried to time the market. Although investors cannot directly purchase an index, Dalbar used an index to theoretically portray a buyand-hold investor, while monthly net mutual fund purchases and redemptions are used to simulate the “average investor return.” The data showed that the average investor tried to time the market by having a short investing period, and earned significantly less than the buy-and-hold investor. It’s interesting to note the average investor holds a stock or bond only a little more than three years. The following chart compares the estimated difference on a $10,000 investment during the past 20 years for investors who tried to time the market with those who followed a buy-and-hold approach. Recommended Action: Discuss your situation with your financial advisor. We have tools that can help you evaluate your current investment strategy to see if you’re still on track to meet your long-term goals. 2. Blaming the Manager/Financial Advisor for Factors beyond His or Her Control Has the value of your investment fallen because it’s a bad investment or because the overall stock or bond market fell? Market declines are an inevitable part of the investing process and not a reason to sell quality investments. We currently are experiencing the second-largest decline in the U.S. stock market in modern history. Corporate bonds and international stocks have also experienced sharp declines. Assuming poor management or bad advice is the reason for your investment’s decline can be a mistake. Even professional investment plan sponsors sometimes fire investment managers after a period of weak performance, only to watch those same managers post strong results elsewhere. Recommended Action: When evaluating performance, take recent market conditions into account. It’s not realistic to think this crisis could have been anticipated. Realize that even the best managers will have periods of poor performance. 3. Failing to Consider the Impact of Money Moving into and out of the Account A proper performance appraisal will factor in the amount of money being invested and withdrawn. If you don’t do this, you could come to the wrong conclusions about an investment’s performance. Consider the Beardstown Ladies investment club.* The ladies became wildly popular in the 1990s for their extraordinary performance of 23.4% from 1984 to 1993, far exceeding the 14.9% return of the S&P 500. Fame and fortune seemed to be their destiny until it was learned their performance GARY COON, EDWARD JONES INVESTMENTS

failed to account for money added to their account. In reality, their stocks had returned only 9.1% – badly underperforming the market. Recommended Action: Before you judge your account’s value, be sure to consider its cash flow. 4. Looking Backward Instead of Forward When recent performance is strong, investors think it will last forever. However, after long periods of under-performance, people tend to abandon investments only to miss out on potential opportunity. This chart shows 10-year rolling periods where returns were less than 6%. The 10-year period ending December 2008 was the worst 10-year stretch for the S&P 500 since 1926. The good news is that good performance often follows bad performance. After disappointing stretches in the market, investors tend to sell their equity investments, pushing prices lower. Low prices often lead to higher returns, also shown in the chart. Recommended Action: Don’t base an investment decision on a period that was so unusual. Instead, consider why good performance often follows bad, and hold quality investments for the long term. 5. Failing to Account for Income To help you live comfortably in retirement, you should own investments that generate enough income to cover your bills and any extra activities you want to pursue. You’ll likely own fixed-income investments and equities, both of which can pay income. Equities tend to pay a lower rate of income but offer the potential to grow that income over time through dividend increases. Remember that dividends can be increased, decreased or eliminated at any point with or without notice. Recommended Action: Contact your financial advisor to help see if your current investments are properly invested to provide enough income during your retirement. 6. Having Unrealistic Expectations While the stock market has generated total returns (including dividends) of about 10% per year since 1926, the market return has been between 8% and 12% only five times during that same period. The wide price swings in the stock market can be difficult to stomach. Recommended Action: Have realistic expectations for your investments and the returns they should be able to offer over the long term. Talk with your financial advisor about your expectations and the performance you should reasonably expect. 7. Failing to Take Risk into Account People tend to buy riskier investments after the market has risen and safer investments after the market has dropped. This approach is really “buying high and selling low,” which can significantly reduce long-term investment returns. Riskier investments will likely experience wider price swings. The opposite is true for more conservative investments. Recommended Action: Don’t compare your investments to benchmarks, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or S&P 500. Instead, ensure whether your investments are appropriate to help you achieve your long-term financial goals. Review your portfolio with your financial advisor and talk about rebalancing, which can reduce risk and help keep you on track. Health Potassium Iodid Resupply Available The Ottawa County Health Department and the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department announced that a replacement supply of potassium iodide has arrived and is available for those living or working within the Davis-Besse 10mile emergency planning zone. KI can protect the thyroid gland if properly administered in the event of an off-site leak of radioactive iodine from the plant. Public health officials remind residents that the best precaution is to follow evacuation recommendations for their specific area if so advised during an emergency. “The administration of KI is meant to be a supplement to evacuation or sheltering in place, and not a replacement for these actions, said Ottawa County Health Commissioner Nancy Osborn. “The public should not delay evacuation or leave shelter in order to obtain KI. The Ohio Department of Health provided KI tablets to the Ottawa and Toledo-Lucas County Health Departments and Emergency Management Agencies in 2002. The health departments made the KI available to persons who lived or worked within the David-Besse 10-mile EPZ. Schools, nursery schools, daycare centers, nurs-

ing homes, hospitals and detentions facilities were also provided with KI stockpiles. In addition, KI has been pre-distributed to emergency workers such as police, fire, EMS and highway departments. KI distributed to the general public in 2002 was granted a two-year shelf life extension by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007. The extension expired on May 31, 2009. Persons are advised to dispose of KI with an expired date on the packaging. KI can be safely discarded with normal trash. Members of the public in the Davis-Besse 10mile EPZ should contact their county health department for information on how to receive replacement KI. For information, contact the Ottawa County Health Department at 419-734-6800 or on the Web at: www.ottawahealth.org. Additional material may be found on the Ohio Department of Health Web site http://www. odh.ohio.gov/odhPrograms/rp/techs/kipolicy. aspx or at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/emerg-preparedness/protect-public/potassium-iodideuse.html.

Magruder Hospital is now offering tobacco cessation services for adults in the community. Magruder has a Registered Nurse and a Certified Respiratory Therapist trained as Tobacco Treatment Specialists through the University of Massachusetts program, as well as a Registered Respiratory Therapist trained in the “Freedom from Smoking program through the American Lung Association. Both programs are six to eight weeks long, meeting usually once a week for one to two hours each session and the cost is $75 per person. There is some slight flexibility as to the times and locations for the groups, depending on instructor availability and group need. Both programs work a great deal on preparation for quitting tobacco; how to cope with stress and other triggers, discussion of nicotine replacement therapy, reviewing recovery symptoms, developing long term strategies, managing weight and social situations as well as how to handle possible relapse. A small group setting is ideal because it allows for personalization and can also draw on the experiences of peers. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that “there is no clinical treatment available today that can reduce illness, prevent death and increase quality of life more than effective tobacco treatment interventions. Interested individuals in the cessation program at Magruder are asked to call Mark Forney, RRT and Director of the Respiratory Therapy Department, at 419-734-3131, ext. 3461.

Wagon Wheel Rodeo Coming to County Fair Crew Chief Steve Sommer and his crew set up the arena, work the back pens during the rodeo, then tear down the arena and load it on the flatbed semi-trailer to go down the road to the next rodeo. Steve and his crew take care of all the details and finishing touches you see during the rodeo: flags, banners, pens, water and feed for the livestock, and all the equipment required. The pick-up men, Star Hughston and Stuart Pletcher, are both rodeo contestants when time permits. Stuart is an IPRA Northeast Regional Finals Champion in Team Roping. They both ranch full time when they are not working rodeos. Also, they are both active in helping the Michigan High School Rodeo Association. In 2006 they were chosen to work the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. During our rodeos they rescue cowboys from horses and drive bulls out of the arena, but that’s just part of their job. They are usually part of the Wagon Wheel Rodeo Opening, they help Jim sort all the livestock before each performance, and they contribute and haul rodeo livestock, as well as, help keep Jim on track. They are called “Cowboy Lifesavers” but do more than just save cowboys. Bullfighter Shane Grounds is one of the best in the Northeast. He has fought bulls at the Bucking Stock Sale during the International Finals Rodeo and won the Bull Fighting ÀÌ `>ÞÊ*>ÀÌ iÃ] Competition there. The

The rodeo will be riding into town for a performance at this year’s Ottawa County Fair. The show, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, will be put on by Wagon Wheel Rodeo Company. The group is a member in good standing of the International Professional Rodeo Association and has been producing championship rodeos in the five-state area and Canada for 25 years. Owner Jim Fusee prides himself on excellent livestock, professional staff and family entertainment. Jim is very passionate about his patriotic tribute during the rodeo opening. Every year, different music leads new characters through the display of appreciation for our flag and our country. Jim was raised in Onaway, Mich., but now lives in Indiana in the summer and Arkansas in the winter. His rodeo staff is like his family, and like most families now, the kids are scattered all over Michigan and Indiana. Jim feels his ground crew, pick-up men, bullfighters and clown are the best in the business. There are also a few people behind the scenes that contribute a great deal as well. This family pitches in wherever help is needed, nobody has just one job — they all help each other.

Rodeo clowns. Secretary Shelli Overholt and Timer Les Fusee as well as professional IPRA judges. The Livestock are what’s closest to Jim’s heart! Over the years, many of his bucking string have been selected to compete at the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. Three horses have won the honor of Horse of the Year. The latest was No. 295, Fancy Free, who was Bareback Horse of the Year two years in a row: 2004 and 2005. This year two horses were nominated for Bareback Horse of the Year, unfortunately, they canceled each other out and the honor was given to a horse from another company. The contestants are very important to Jim and he considers them his friends, but his priority is entertaining the fans, giving them good rodeo action and family fun. He wants everyone to have good memories of seeing a rodeo, and feel the culture of rodeo, which are fun, family, respect, teamwork, challenge, failure and success. Other entertainment planned for this year’s fair includes: Thursday, July 23 — Brews Brothers Demolition Derby, 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 24 — Faircross Motorcycle Racing, 7 p.m. Saturday, July 25 — Ohio State Tractors Pullers Association Tractor Pull, 6 p.m. Sunday, July 26 — Brews Brothers Demolition Derby, 4:30 p.m. The 2009 Week Event Pass are $25 a seat and grandstand passes are on sale now. The rodeo is $10 a seat and all other events are $5. For information, call 419-898-1971.

Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star? Get Your Questions Answered Sandusky City Schools and Terra Community College, in collaboration with MoronBros Concerts, are excited to announce a once-in-a-lifetime experience for area music/band students. And this event will be the kickoff for the new Terra/Sandusky High School Tech Prep music program. “So You Wanna Be A Rock and Roll Star,” featuring John Christianson from Orange County California ska band Reel Big Fish, is coming to room 300 at SHS Wednesday, July 15. The combination audio/visual program, group discussion and question-andanswer session will delve into life as a successful touring musician and all that goes along with it. Christianson is the trumpet player for Reel Big Fish and has been in numerous Orange County bands over the years. RBF first hit the national stage in the late ’90s when they rose to the top of the third wave ska/punk revival with songs like “Sell Out” and “Take On Me.” Since then they have

toured the world extensively over the years headlining stadiums and clubs alike from Boston to Bahrain and every city in between The event is free for anyone who attends, and is aimed especially for (but not exclusively to) the band and music students who are curious about pursuing music as a profession/career. The event will run from 11 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. After the program, which may include a sneak preview of the upcoming RBF DVD Release, Christianson will have a meet-and-greet and signing session with those in attendance. Later that night, Christianson will appear with the band at a sold-out show at the House of Blues in Cleveland. For info on that show, go to www.hob.com. Space is limited and brass instrumentalists are encouraged to bring their horns along. For information on this event, go to www. moronbrosconcerts.com or contact Sandusky High School Career Center.
