BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

We went to the OSU Marching Band Alumni Concert at Lakeside on Saturday night … what a great show for Buckeye fans. I think I counted six or seven drum majors, including 2009’s! The Jon Waters highlight was the “Script Lakeside” through the aisles of Hoover Auditorium. It was all made more meaningful by Assistant OSU Band Director Jon Waters’ announcement that the concert was dedicated to the memory of Earl Warnke. “If it wasn’t for Earl, I wouldn’t be here today,” Jon, a graduate of Woodmore told the audience. ——— We had 202 entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Ann Christian, of Catawba, who found Wylie hiding in the Crosswinds ad on page 10A last week. Ann wins a $20 gift certificate to Kokomo Bay. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner is Brenda DeVelvis chosen from 110 entries. Brenda wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. Wylie will try to hide again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad on page 10A and drop it at our office in the Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill. Or, you can click on the Find Wylie icon on our Web site, www.thebeacon.net. Also, click on the “Win it on the Web” icon to register for a free gas card. ——— Speaking of Kokomo Bay and Mango Mama’s, the Danbury Parent Teacher Community Organization will hold the next fundraiser there 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Aug. 1, with the “6-7-8-OH” Band performing. The $10 admission price covers it. ——— Bassett’s Market will host the next fundraiser for the Humane Society of Ottawa County. They will be serving Johnsonville brats from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at this special cookout. Yum! ——— Joe and Nancy Young of “Young Love Ministries” will provide the entertainment at the Log Cabin concert in Oak Harbor Sunday, Aug. 2 starting at 6:30 p.m. ——— A memorial fund has been set up in memory of Ernie Isaac Sr. at National City Bank in Port Clinton. Ernie died last month after a battle with cancer, and the fund has been established to help with his medical and funeral bill. ——— Mina Klinow Peterlin, a former bartender and tavern owner around here, will be 95 years young Aug. 9. She worked at the Eagles, the VFW and the Moose Club in Port Clinton. She and her husband Bob used to own Lammers Inn in Danbury Township back in the ’60s. She is the “official grand mama” of the Travelin’ Lounge Lizards and is still as ornery as ever, I am glad to report! Send her a card in care of her daughter Candy Reed at 6834 Silver Rock Drive, New Albany, OH 43054-7156. ——— The Oak Harbor High School Athletic Department hosts its Fall OHSAA Pre-Season Meeting at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 30 at the High School. This is a mandatory meeting for parents and student athletes participating in fall sports for grades 7-12. ——— There will be a bloodmobile at the Oak Harbor Community Market VFW Hall coming Monday, Aug. 3, from noon to 6 p.m.

AT LAST!!! Some positive news about home sales by john schaffner

Turn on the news, and you don’t hear much positive coming from the TV or radio. The big newspapers are just chock full of economic doom and gloom. Finally … some good news! U.S. Home Sales rose by 11 percent in June, one of the fastest increases in more than 8 years. In our area, home sales actually rose in June, albeit very slightly. However even a leveling off could be a positive indicator or future activity in the local housing market. The markets along the lakeshore counties that comprise the Firelands Area Board of Realtors, have been struggling since the fall of 2006 — nearly three years. The first half of 2009 was the worst of it, actual units sold fell by more than 12 percent and the total dollar volume of home sales in the Firelands Area dropped by more than 30 percent. During the same time period, the average home price fell by almost $26,000, a drop of 20.6 percent. However, things were much rosier in the month of June. Following six or seven months of continuing decline, the number of units sold in the Firelands area remained exactly the same as 2008, as did the total dollar volume of home sales and the average price. “The good news is the movement is up,” says Firelands Board of Realtors President Len Partin

of Jack Bradley Realty. “However, once housing sales start increasing, the better buyer opportunities will start declining. Smart buyers realize that so they are buying now.” Buyers appear to be taking advantage of high value prices of homes close to the lake. Buyers are also taking advantage of low interest rates and the tax credit being offered to first-time homebuyers. Several other local realtors have confirmed the up-tick in activity. “It is my understanding that across the country, new listings priced to the current market are selling fast,” said Tomi Johnson of Howard Hanna. “Last week, I had three offers in the first 10 days on a new listing so perhaps this is confirmation. Our market historically is a bit slower than the primary market in larger metropolitan areas, but once they take off, our area follows and continues to stay active longer.” Phillip Bolte, broker/manager of Bolte Real Estate stated, “As one of the younger members of our industry, this is my first goaround with a serious recession. If anything, it makes you thankful of the things you have and even more, appreciate the good times as they come around again.” Cindy Bolte of Bolte Real Estate added, “Anyone not buying now is missing the boat!”

First paved trail complete at Meadowbrook The first phase of construction for Meadowbrook non-motorized paved trails has been completed. Unilliance Construction was awarded the bid for the 1,102-foot long, 8-foot wide asphalt trail. The trail extends north and west along the prairie. It terminates just before the marsh where an ADA accessible pond-side boardwalk 80-foot long by 8-feet wide will be constructed. The trail and boardwalk were made possible by a grant from Coastal Management. Young Brothers Construction will build the boardwalk utilizing recycled plastic lumber. Engineering is under way for the second paved trail which will be 2,525 feet long and 8 feet wide. It will be a loop trail beginning at Bayshore Road and extending north, then east as it intersects with the first trail before heading further east into the woods. Funding for the second trail is through a Federal Land and

SoundOff Dear Editor: President Obama said with his health care program you can keep your existing coverage and your premiums would go down. He was right, but what he forgot to mention is your existing health care coverage would simply go away. In section 102 of his health care plan they would require your insurance to accept regulations like pre-existing conditions which negates the nature of insurance, fix prices below market which only government with its printing presses can endure and forget about profits again like government. Does anyone in his right mind think an above board insurance company can compete in that environment? Government health care would win by default. We could

all look forward then to 77 day waits for emergency MRI’s like the VA and years for necessary surgery and obtaining a physician. The only thing that would be missing is the Kool Aid. Jim Boehm Port Clinton Dear Editor: We all need to be aware of the health care reform going on in Washington. Our own Sen. Brown sits on Senate health committee. The Wall Street Journal reported last weekend that Brown voted against an amendment that would require members of Congress to enroll in the “public option plan. The public option plan is the one that would be good enough for us but not for our senator. We all need to ask him why. Mary Miller, Catawba Dear Editor: Serving as a school board member is one of the most important responsibilities that a citizen can undertake. Board members plan the education for the youth in the community so the children will be able to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Being a school board member is a public service that can be satisfying, but one that demands commitment, energy and ability. Nearly 3,400 men and women who serve on school boards in Ohio dedicate their time and talents to guide the education of nearly 2 million children. The people elected to our school boards will make decisions affecting the quality of life in our community — and the spending of our tax dollars. Being a school board member also can be a frustrating job. There are long hours, complex problems and regular criticism, yet the satisfaction these dedicated men and women feel on graduation day makes it all worthwhile. There are many attributes that are important to board membership. Besides being enthusiastic, intelligent and a good listener, a school board member must want to be part of a team that is dedicated toward improving public education. Good school board members are open-minded and ready to learn. Board members are policy-makers, and while they are not necessarily education professionals, they are the chief advisors to the superintendent on community attitudes. Board members do not manage the day-to-day operations of a school district; they see to it that the system is managed well by professionals. The honor of being a school board member must be earned through constant effort and a strong commitment to serving others. Candidates who are truly interested in serving and devoting the time necessary to meet this challenge should run for a seat on their local school board this November. Petitions must be filed with the county board of elections by 4 p.m., Aug. 20. The Ohio School Boards Association is making an all-

out effort to encourage qualified and interested citizens to seek a seat on their board of education. County boards of elections and every board of education office has received information on school board elections, being a school board member and OSBA’s candidate training programs and kits. Following the election, the association will be offering a series of seminars for newly elected board members as well. Ohio School Boards Association Dear Editor, Edmond Burke, the great political philosopher, said change as reform was intended to preserve and improve the basic institutions of the state. Change as innovation was destructive as a radical departure from the past and the substitution of existing institutions of the state with potential dangerous experiments. Furthermore, the Socialist often justifies change as conferring new, abstract rights, which is nothing more than a Socialist deception intended to empower the state and deny man his real rights. Change unconstrained by prudence produces unpredictable consequences, threatening liberty with chaos, and destroying the very principles the Conservative holds dear. The Conservative seeks to preserve and improve the civil society, not to substitute radical changes in our social fabric. The Republicans introduced many bills to reform health care; Senator Obama voted against all of them as they dealt with existing private insurance companies. President Obama doesn’t want the private sector to run the health care field, his new plan introduces a radical government run program, which will bankrupt our country. The first step in reform should be have lawsuit reform, stop the frivolous lawsuits and limit excessive jury verdicts. Obama has said many times that he is against tort reform. The extreme left is dissatisfied with the condition of his own existence. He is angry, resentful, and jealous. This group misuses the term “Equality to pursue uniform economic and social outcomes. President Obama made this point when lecturing at Wesleyan University, when he said, “Our individual salvation depends on collective salvation. Is this statement Socialistic or worse? The main stream press echoes the philosophy of the extreme left. No matter how robust the economy, they will claim the imminent threat of recession or depression. When economic hardship exists often at the hand of the left, they join them by condemning the free market and advocating more government. The Free Market is the most flexible and successful of economic systems. It inspires creativity and inventiveness. The free market creates more wealth and opportunities for more people than any other economic model. But absolute equality is impossible, the extreme left preaches about a class struggle and class envy, so that excessive taxes area more easily sold to the masses. Ron Mainous Port Clinton

The Beacon   I   Thursday, July 30, 2009

Beacon Bits And so, here we are at the very end of July and with another fine month of summer still ahead. I am writing on Sunday evening. From BY VIRGINIA PARK where I sit in the living room there is a good view through a couple of rooms and out the kitchen window in the back of the house. Sun is shining through the trees and a brisk breeze is rifling through them keeping shadowy patterns of moving leaves dancing on the interior walls. It looks neat. I like to see that. This past weekend I saw my first marsh mallows in bloom (just a couple of flowers) and I saw the first lotus flowers in bloom. The lotus flowers were on the Little Portage River and I saw them from the bridge as I drove across. Both of these are beautiful flowers. And with my favorite, the Queen Anne’s lace (also called wild carrot), blooming so prolifically now along nearly every roadside, it makes this season of the year particularly attractive. It’s a good time to take a drive, just to see what’s bursting into flower. ——— Last week was a very busy one. Vacation Bible School took place at our church. It started on Sunday night, skipped Thursday, and then ended on Friday. We started out each night with a kid-friendly meal (something like mini pizzas or meatball sandwiches), then we would go for a gathering time in the sanctuary where the kids learned songs and Bible verses. After that the various age groups went to a rotating round of classes. In my case it was time to go upstairs to the lounge for the adult class — yes we have an adult study class in VBS — and this year nine people participated. At the end of the evening we would go back to the sanctuary, re-learn our Bible verse, sing some more songs and, at dismissal the kids all get a treat to take home. It was fun but it does make for an exhausting week. ——— And then of course it was also the week of the Ottawa County Fair. A long time ago I was asked to take one day to staff the Democratic Party tent there and Thursday was the only option because I knew I wouldn’t be attending VBS that night. Jim and Trudy Imke and Linda Apling took shifts in the afternoon for me. I went to the fair after work — getting caught in a torrential downpour of rain on the way — to take over. Darrell Opfer, of Oak Harbor; Dan Laity, of Elmore; and Donna Hamann, of Port Clinton, made up the evening crew. Laity took time (about an hour) to don a donkey costume in the evening. Most of the fair-goers really enjoyed that. Something very scary happened at the fair. I looked down the main drive toward the grandstand. About 200 feet from where I was standing at the tent, a plume of black smoke was rising. I mentioned to Donna that it looked as if something had caught fire. In just a couple of moments the smoke got much bigger and we could see the fire. Suddenly the fire was huge, maybe 4 feet by 6 feet and looked as if it was coming out of a cooking grill. Beside it there appeared to be propane tanks. This was frightening to me. I could imagine a horrible explosion with flames shooting everywhere. Both Donna and I tried to dial for help on our cell phones. Neither cell phone worked. Running through my mind was the account of when The Beer Barrel burned to the ground at Put-in-Bay about 20 years or more ago. I thought I recalled that a grill had caught on fire, propane tanks had exploded and massive flames were everywhere. I assumed, but did not know, that the same thing could have happened last week at the fair. Donna and I moved away from the fire, eventually going about 500 feet in the direction toward the highway. We kept looking back at the fire. What amazed me was that people gave no respect to it. They just kept ambling up to it, pausing to take a look, then going on. Some stopped to watch — waiting for an explosion, I guess. It was the last place I wanted to be.

The firefighters on duty at the fair made their way through the crowd with a truck and extinguished the blaze. Donna and I returned to our post. Later I walked down to see the mess and there was a lot of white powdery stuff all around that had been used to douse the fire. Having a very healthy fear of the dangers of all fires, I was really surprised that lots of people walked up very close to it. I couldn’t wait to go in the other direction. I’d like to know if this fire had the potential to be as dangerous if I thought it could be or whether my concern was an overreaction on my part. ——— Sue and Horst Herzog of Catawba Island will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 16 and their sons and daughters entertained family and friends Saturday evening. Daughters Debbie (Peter) Mulcahy, of Alaska, and Amy (Peter) Lillquist, of Minnesota, along with sons Harold Herzog, of Sandusky, and Rick (Vee) Herzog, of Seattle, hosted a neat party at the Elks Club at Port Clinton. All the Herzog “kids” took part. Rick put together a video of continuously running family pictures from many years ago to the present. That was really interesting as Sue and Horst have lived in many places around the world such as Mexico, the Czech Republic, India, England and elsewhere. It was a fun party. ——— Nancy Blair of Catawba Island has a collection of vintage women’s hats that she is willing to sell. She called me to say she remembered reading about a couple of women who present a show about hats. If anyone knows who these women are, please call me at 419-734-2753 or e-mail ginny@nwonline.net. The women might be interested in looking at Nancy’s collection. In fact, I’d like to see the collection. ——— It’s really good news that the ice cream shop at the corner of Ohio 2 and 19 is open for business again. It’s called Barnside Creamery and it features locally produced food products, including Toft’s ice cream and Tank’s (of Elmore) meat products. The shop is owned by Lorne and Tonia Tice and their three daughters are among the parttime workers there this summer. I’m going to stop next time I am out west of town heading for Toledo. ——— You still have time to see “Cheaper by the Dozen” at Lakeside’s South Auditorium. Directed by Brenda BouSliman, the presentation features local children and starts at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, July 30. And the Von Trapp Family Singers will perform at Hoover Auditorium in Lakeside. The performers are the great-grand children of Captain Von Trapp, portrayed in “The Sound of Music” by Christopher Plummer. He married the governess, Maria (Julie Andrews); and some of his descendants will be live on stage at 8:15 p.m. Friday, July 31. ——— I don’t want to conclude this column without mentioning that July 20 was the 40th anniversary of the first person to set foot on the surface of the moon. I remember it. Apollo 11 with three men aboard went to the moon. I allowed my 7-year-old son to stay up to watch history being made as Ohio’s Neil Armstrong stepped out of the landing module onto the moon’s surface. Do you remember those words “one small step for a man … one giant leap for mankind?” It was a glorious moment. Buzz Aldrin followed Armstrong on to the surface of the moon and Michael Collins piloted the space ship above, waiting for their return to it. According to an article in “Time” magazine, only 24 men have ever set foot on the moon. That’s a small, very select group. We ought never to forget their bravery, their contribution to our world’s history and to the contributions they made to space exploration and to scientific advancement.

United Way honors top volunteer As part of the LIVE UNITED movement, United Way in Ottawa County encourages everyone to make a difference in their community by giving, advocating and volunteering. This week, the organization is putting the spotlight on one local woman who displays outstanding volunteerism. Rosalyn Barnhill, a lifelong resident of Marblehead, sometimes refers to herself as a professional volunteer. Her parents raised her to always keep others in mind. “If you bake a batch of cookies, you make extra and think of someone with whom to share them,” Rosalyn said. Rosalyn enjoys serving on the board of Habitat for Humanity in Ottawa County and even served a term as board president. “I cherish the friendships I have made from helping families build their homes,” she said. One of Rosalyn’s pastimes is reading cookbooks, much like her father. She uses her knowledge and experience to organize group meals at her church, and she recently helped bake apple pies with a group at Camp Patmos on Kelleys Island. Other local organizations that benefit from Rosalyn’s time and talents are CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program, Lakeside United Methodist Church choir, Firelands District team for United Methodist Women, the Lakeside Rhein Center’s “Empty Bowl” fundraiser and Stephen Ministry. Rosalyn’s motto is, “Life isn’t just about what you can have; it’s about what you can give.” Thank you Rosalyn, for LIVING UNITED. For volunteer opportunities, visit www.unitedwayottawacounty.org or dial 2-1-1.

County Democrats planning picnic The Ottawa County Democrats will hold the annual picnic at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Carroll Township Complex, 11080 W. Toussaint E. Road off of Ohio 19. Hot dogs, hamburgers, ice water and lemonade will be furnished. Please bring a covered dish to share and your own table service. Call or e-mail if you are coming so we can make sure we have enough for everyone. Call Dan Laity at 419862-3053 or Linda Apling at 419-898-0220. A fun time is had by all. Everyone is welcome.

Continued from Page 1A Water Conservation Grant. A recently-awarded Natureworks grant allowed the purchase of 3 acres of property from Tim Nash. It will be utilized for a shelter house overlooking the prairie as well as a parking area which will be located near the beginning of the first trail. Grant funding is supplemented by Danbury Township in various amounts depending upon the requirements of the grant. Still pending is an application to ODNR for a Recreational Trails Fund grant. If awarded, paved trails would extend into the north woods. The Meadowbrook paved trails will be for walking and bicycling. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on any trails. Mulched and grass trails throughout the park have been in place for several months and circle through the prairie, woods and open areas. A leisurely walk down these natural trails takes about one hour. Meadowbrook Marsh is located on Bayshore Road approximately ½ mile west of Dempsey Access. The park is open from dawn till dusk. Currently there is parking available down the drive where the large entrance sign is located.

The program is designed to help low-income, older individuals enter the workforce, secure more challenging positions, move into new career areas or supplement their incomes. “As the economy continues to falter, many older Ohioans Farm Markets & Greenhouses • Quality Fruit & Vegetables are finding it necessary to find work—either because they were laid off or because their nest eggs have disappeared,” said Kent Kahn, director for Experience Works. “Unfortunately, finding a job can be especially difficult for older people who may have been out of the job search process for many years.”

Ottawa County Veterans Office is looking for WWII veterans If you are an honorably discharged WWII veteran who earned a Combat Infantry Badge or Combat Medical Badge, you are authorized the Bronze Star Medal. The history of the Bronze Star Medal goes back to 1944. In a memorandum to President Roosevelt in February 1944, the Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. George C. Marshall, wrote: “The fact that the ground troops, Infantry in particular, lead miserable lives of extreme discomfort and are the ones who must close in personal combat with the enemy, makes the maintenance of their morale of great importance. The

award of the Air Medal have had an adverse reaction on the ground troops, particularly the Infantry Riflemen who are now suffering the heaviest losses, air or ground, in the Army, and enduring the greatest hardships.” Based on Marshall’s memorandum, Roosevelt authorized the Bronze Star Medal by Executive Order 9419 dated Feb. 4, 1944, retroactive to Dec. 7, 1941. A study conducted in 1947, noted the hardship indicated by Marshall’s memorandum spoke of the hardships that were borne by soldiers who were awarded the Combat Infantry Badge or Combat Medical Badge. As a direct result, the policy was imple-

mented and authorized the retroactive award of the Bronze Star Medal to soldiers who had received the Combat Infantry Badge or Combat Medical Badge during WWII. If you are a WWII Veteran and you were awarded the Combat Infantry Badge or Combat Medical Badge for your heroic service between Dec. 7, 1941 through Sept. 2, 1945, or the dependent of a veteran who qualified the same, contact the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office at 419-898-2089 or visit us at 8444 W. Edgewood Manor Celebrates Christmas in July On his way to vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Santa Claus with red T-shirt, flowered Bermuda shorts, black socks, flip made his yearly scheduled stop at Edgewood Manor for the flops, sunglasses and a red sun visor. 3rd annual Christmas in July celebration. With presents in As multi-colored lights twinkled on the Christmas trees hand, he was dressed in his summer vacation attire complete and animated holiday figures moved to the music, Santa made his entrance amid a round of excited applause. Smiling faces surrounded the room as jolly ol’ St. Nick passed out Christmas presents to all who attended. The bags were filled with stuffed animals, silver picture frames, small brightly colored tote bags, necklaces, bracelets, snacks and cans of root beer. The holiday song styling’s of Dean Martin echoed through the halls as residents and staff joined together to sing along. Rousing choruses of “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Silver Bells” and “Jingle Bell Rock” brought back memories of Christmas’s past. Taste buds were tantalized by strawberry cake topped with whipped cream and fresh sliced strawberries. Thirsts were quenched by a raspberry punch complete with sherbet floats. To bring an end to the memorable party, Santa posed with residents for pictures. As he left for his vacation in the sun, Lillian Larsen, resident of Edgewood, smiles as residents recited the old favorite “Twas the Night before she bear hugs Santa.

On a brutally cold winter day on Dec. 13, 2008, during the OVH Wreaths Across America ceremony, Frank Kucinich proudly presented the U.S. Marine Wreath. Frank attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration as a guest of his brother Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich. At the White House luau on June 25, 2009, Frank met President Obama. Congressman Dennis Kucinich was there with Frank as he was photographed with our President and received a thank you for his military service. Frank Kucinich 60, who had a great love of country, left us unexpectedly on July 2, 2009. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Frank Kucinich and with the families of all who lie beneath our flag.

The symbolic table was set in remembrance and honoring the POW/ MIA.

Danbury High School Class of 1994 gets together Danbury High School’s Class of 1994 got together July 17-19 to celebrate 15 years out of school. Classmate Amee (Wanzo) BellWanzo and her band Black Eyed Betty, based out of Columbus, played at Jamestown Tavern on Friday night. This was an impromptu event that many classmates (and other DHS graduates) attended. On Saturday, July 18, the official reunion was held at the Marblehead VFW — the same place as the 10-year celebration. Dinner and desserts were provided by two classmates. There was music and lots of laughs. The group had yearbooks and

pictures for everyone to look at and reminisce. Everyone was also asked to bring in pictures of their children, which were placed on poster board for everyone to see. In addition, the group raffled off a basket with food, beer and wine from Trader Joe’s. Doug Thompson won the basket. The class also donated $50 to the VFW. On Sunday, the group had a family picnic at the James Park Shelter House for this reunion. Hot dogs, brats and drinks were provided. All classmates brought a side dish to share. The group donated $50 to the James Park fund.

Around Ottawa County Auditor: Tentative property values approved by the state Ottawa County Auditor Jo Ellen Regal announced today that the tentative Ottawa County 2009 triennial update property values have been approved by the state. These new values are available on the auditor’s Web site, www. ottawacountyauditor.org. These values are still tentative until the state approves the final values. The auditor’s office staff will now begin the process of adding the value of any new construction items (new additions to property like new garages, family rooms, additional bathrooms, bedrooms or remodeling projects completed or started during 2008) as well as any destroyed or damaged property. Once all of these additions are completed, Regal will announce the dates for informal hearings, a chance for property owners to discuss any concerns they have over their new values. Ottawa County property owners will receive a notice in the mail with their new values and the dates for informal hearings. The dates will also be posted on the Web site. Those who agree that the new appraisal represents the current market value of the property do not have to do

anything. Those with questions can call the auditor’s office at 419-734-6740 or visit the auditor’s office 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Check the Web site for any offsite hours and locations. You can also click the “Ask the Auditor” button on the Web site to e-mail your questions. State law provides property tax relief to homeowners 65 and older or homeowners who are permanently disabled. Also, owner occupied homes qualify for a 2½ percent reduction.

Check values online

To check for your tentative Ottawa County property values, go to www.ottawacountyauditor.org and click on the search button. You can search for your properties by name, address or parcel number. Your parcel number can be found on your tax bill. Once your property is found, click on the parcel number. The new and old values are listed on the valuation page.

Business Continuing education seminars offered free at Edgewood Manor Nearly 40 health care professionals gathered at Edgewood Manor on July 23 for a continuing education seminar. Stein Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care co-sponsored the event, attended mostly by nurses and social workers. “We were extremely pleased with the turnout,” said Carrie McGlothlin, marketing director at Edgewood Manor stated. “It was a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our facility and provide a great service to the community.” She said the facility is planning to host continuing education seminars each quarter.

The event was for 3 credits on ethics, lunch was provided and was offered at no cost to the attendees because of the partnership with Stein Hospice and Home Instead. “We feel it is important to build relationships with local health care organizations. We have many residents at Edgewood, they can greatly benefit from companion or hospice care.” added McGlothlin. For information about the continuing education seminars, e-mail Carrie McGlothlin at cmcglothlin@covenantcare. com or call Edgewood Manor at 419- Area health care professionals take advantage of a recent seminar. 734-5506.
