Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial

TellTales Observation deck to stay BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

What a GREAT TIME we had last Friday night at the Club Red B*A*S*H for the American Red Cross at Catawba Island Club. The best part was Ed Stout, who many of you know as a long-time waiter at The Garden Restaurant, who dressed up as “Klinger” from the old TV show. They raised gobs of money for a great cause at the event. A good time was had by all who attended. Check out pictures from the event on www.thebeacon.net. —— We had 116 entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Carol Prucha who found Wylie hiding in the Bassett’s ad on page 8A last week. Carol wins a $20 gift certificate to Monsoon Lagoon. Our “Win it on the Web” winner is Earl Kennedy chosen from 74 entries. Kennedy wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. Wylie will try to hide again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad on page 11A and drop it at our office in the Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill. Or, you can click on the Find Wylie icon on our Web site, www.thebeacon.net. Also, click on the “Win it on the Web” icon to register for a free gas card. ——— We goofed! We ran the wrong price for the breakfast buffet in the ad for Ritzki’s Bar and Grill last week. We listed their breakfast buffet at $18.95 when it should have been $8.95. ——— The Humane Society of Ottawa County is having another of its popular Dog Bath and Nail Trim events this Saturday at Dubbert’s Outdrive on Ohio 163 east of Port Clinton. The cost is $5 for a dog bath and $5 for a toenail trim. What a great deal! ——— There will be another special meeting of the Conestoga Neighborhood (Port Clinton east side) on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the Shelter House at Lakeview Park. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to share. ——— Speaking of Lakeview Park, the Port Clinton citywide Garage Sale will be held there on Aug. 22. To reserve a space to sell some stuff, call Roseanne at 419-734-4497. ——— On Sunday, Aug. 9, two barbershop quartets will be entertaining the Oak Harbor Log Cabin crowd starting at 6:30 p.m. “The Buzz” and “Brothers Three & Me” will provide the harmonies. Also, before the singing begins, Frank Gluth and John Liske will present a history lesson on the village of Oak Harbor. ——— Carroll ‘n Company 4-H Club is holding a Chicken Barbecue fundraiser for Katelyn Apple this Friday, Aug. 7, at both Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union locations, West Fremont Road in Port Clinton and Ohio 19 in Oak Harbor from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $7. Katelyn is the daughter of Kevin and Mary Beth (Rounds) Mylander and Mark Apple. She was recently diagnosed with “Precursor Bcell Lymphoblast Lymphoma. ——— A special celebration of the life of Dian Schnitzler will be held this Saturday, Aug. 8, at 647 North Park Lane in Marblehead. They will have hors d’oeuvres and other refreshments. It all gets under way at 2 p.m. ——— The Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society will have a chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in the picnic area by the Lighthouse. Cost of the dinner is $8.50 with proceeds going to the Life Saving Station/Education Center Museum building fund. The Lighthouse and Museum will also be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The closure of the elevator which transports visitors to the top of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial has been pushed back until Oct. 1. Visitors to the memorial will be able ride the Otis elevator to access the observation deck for at least two more months, acThe U.S. Brig cording to Superintendent Niagara will Blanca Alvarez be returning Stransky. to Put-in-Bay “Originally, Aug. 19-23 we anticipated closing the ob——— servation deck Page 11A in August to allow for the necessary repairs on the elevator. However, we just learned today that the contractor must develop shop drawings before work can begin on the elevator. Therefore, we are pleased to announce that the Memorial will remain open until at least September 30, 2009,” Stransky said. “Funds from the Recovery Act will allow us to repair the 1932 Otis elevator that transports approximately 150,000 visitors to the observation deck every year. More importantly, we will also repair the freeze/thaw damage that has occurred over the years to the observation deck due to poor drainage,” added Stransky. This month, visitors to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial will see a new sign posted at the entrance to the 352-foot Doric column. The sign is welcome news to the park because it indicates that the much-needed repairs to the Memorial are getting under way. The dark blue sign is required to be posted at all construction sites awarded Recovery Act funds, said Superintendent Blanca Alvarez Stransky. “We are looking forward to beginning Phase One of the repairs on the memorial. It’s been three years since

fering several new Ranger programs including construction tours. “The building of the actual Memorial between 1912 through 1915 was an incredible feat and one that should be shared with our visitors. I am very pleased that my staff will be able to share the construction story with our visitors,” Stransky added. For information about the project, contact Stransky at 419-285-2184.

Kelleys or bust A brave group of locals and guests recently took on the 4-mile swim from the Lakeside pier to Kelleys Island. The 13 men and women — including groups of moms and collegiate swimmers — took part in the annual event.

Medicare gives Riverview 4 stars

Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus has received four out of five stars in the Medicare Five Star Rating System for the second quarter of 2009. This rating is an improvement over the previous rating of three stars. This rating also ties Riverview Healthcare Campus for the top rating among long-term care facility in Ottawa County. the 500-pound piece of granite fell from the top of the observation deck and forced us to close the upper plaza and fence the entire area,” added Stransky. A remnant of the 500-pound granite block that fell from the Observation Deck will be put on display late this month. The granite block created a 24-inch wide hole on impact with the upper plaza. The park is also of-

data: health inspections, staffing and quality measures. A star rating is provided for each of these three sources, the three ratings are combined for an overall rating. Riverview received four stars for health inspections, four stars for staffing and two stars for quality measures. The quality measures represent only a few of the many aspects of care that may be important to a consumer. Riverview’s strong rehab focus often brings new admissions that have many health concerns related to the reason for their need of skilled nursing care. These concerns must be reported to Medicare though the condition most likely developed prior to admission. Some examples of quality measures viewed in this rating are pain and decreased mobil-

ity. Both of these measures present upon admission on a resident coming for rehabilitation. It is always important to talk to the nursing home staff about these quality measures and ask what else they are doing to improve the care they give their residents. Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus is located in Oak Harbor and has been a county-owned and operated facility for 138 years. Riverview offers long- and short-term stays; inpatient and outpatient therapy (physical, occupational, speech); a specialized short term rehab unit; the only long-term care facility in Ottawa County to contract with the Veteran’s Affairs; houses Ottawa County’s only specialized memory care unit; and Ottawa County’s only adult day service, DayBreak.

Case Port Clinton Police Department Dear Editor: President Obama is pushing the health care bill hard, but as Americans find out what is in the bowels of this bill they are referring to it as the health scare bill for good reason. A red flag for Americans should be that neither president Obama, Congress or the Senate wants any part of this bill for themselves. President Obama tells us not to worry because if you want to keep your existing private insurance you can. What you won’t tell you is how quickly your private insurance will disappear for these reasons. Insurance companies are in business to make profit. They sell insurance which is a product to cover your expenses in the event that you have a problem in the future. That is the nature of insurance. With the health care plan the product insurance companies will be required to sell is for preexisting problems. That is not insurance, that is another bailout. They have changed the nature of the product. Wouldn’t it be great if we could buy auto insurance after the accident? This plus the other regulations would require huge rate increases. Unfortunately, government will set the rates charged. Remember government’s program does not require profit. Your private insurance can’t compete. When you factor in section #425 kill grandma part of the bill for anyone over 59 and all the other government intrusions, plus the costs. This bill should be stopped in its tracks. ANNIVERSARY Dubbert

William and Helen (Hambley) Dubbert celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Saturday, July 25. The couple were married at the old Methodist Church on Second Street in Port Clinton in 1946. The couple reside in Port Clinton and are the parents of Russell Dubbert, Troy, Al.; Carolyn Currier, Bonnie Welch, Karen Snyder and Dianna Reed, all of Port Clinton. The couple thought they were leaving town for a special anniversary dinner. Instead, their daughter drove to the Bay Township Hall that was decorated in a tropical paradise theme for a surprise party. Sixty-five guests attended the party to make this a memorable day for the couple. William received another surprise when the band arrived. The band members were some of his fellow workers from years ago when they worked together at Celotex. Guests attending flew in from Georgia, Rhode Island and Wisconsin to surprise the couple.

Beacon Bits Well, it’s early Monday evening as I sit down to write and Beacon Bits BY VIRGINIA PARK and I’m in a hurry. So … ——— I finally have picked two tomatoes and two zucchini squash from my tiny garden. Now, of course, I do know that other people have had lots of produce already, but I am never lucky about an early crop. So I take what I can get, when I can get it and I am happy with that. I saw Bob and Joyce Fritz on Saturday night — home in Port Clinton from their permanent home in Arizona — and they said they plant their tomatoes in February and their crop is already harvested and done. ——— I saw some large seagulls that were definitely not white down in the parking lot of Burger King restaurant. In fact, they were brown and cream color and I thought that some of them might be young birds. But then I noted some with those darker colors were about as big as a young chicken. So I don’t think they were “youngin’s.” Can anyone explain that to me? ——— Did you know that Jim Sass was one of the winners of the hog calling contest out at the county fair? JoAn Monnett, formerly

the Ottawa County Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas, was the announcer for the event. She kept the show going by asking the commissioners, who had been judging the contest, to do some calling themselves. I understand that two of the commissioners gave it a try and that Jim won. Well, he grew up on a farm so he ought to know how to call a pig, right? ——— Pauline and Walt Eaton had their annual picnic recently down on the shore of the Portage River for many of the folks who attend the 8 a.m. Sunday worship service at Trinity United Methodist Church. Walt cooks hotdogs and everybody else brings a potluck dish. Pauline says that this year she was going to make s’mores but totally forgot that she had purchased the ingredients to do that. Maybe next year, Pauline! Meantime those chocolate candy bars will be good for snacks as the summer rolls along. ——— So, hasn’t this been a great summer so far? I heard a rumor that July might be the coolest July on record around here — but I’m not sure if that is true. I do know that it has been cool and sunny on lots of days. I’m enjoying the weather. And I am even enjoying the big rains we got during the past month. They were great for my garden and that is always a plus. ———

Let us help bring the coast to you with our Stanley Coastal Living Collection

The Port Clinton High School Class of 1959 celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend with three events for the reunion celebration. On Friday night there was a party at Casey Lambert’s beach house. On Saturday evening there was a dinner dance at the Port Clinton Yacht Club. And on Sunday morning there was a breakfast buffet at the Nor’Easter Club. I heard there were 71 classmates at the Saturday night party. There were lots of people there I had not seen for a long time. Gaye Gaudern Mackey was home from Florida and I had not seen her in many years. I do keep in contact with Jeanne Woolley Kronemeyer but rarely have the chance to get together with her and she and her husband Dave were in attendance, too. Jeanne and Dave have a mobile home and are footloose and fancy-free. They no longer have a permanent home and just travel around the country as the spirit moves them. Once in a while they settle down long enough in Kentucky for Jeanne, a registered nurse, to do a little temporary nursing work at a facility near where they used to live. When they feel the urge to move on again, they just go. Lots of folks who were guests at the Yacht Club that night wandered in and out greeting friends that they knew from school days. That is one of the great benefits of living in one’s hometown. I think that the class of ’59 may decide to get together more frequently now that most people are retired and find it easier to travel. ——— The two Lutheran Churches on the Danbury Peninsula join together for outdoor worship Sunday, Aug. 9, at the Danbury Township Hall shelter house. Gospel Hymn Singing starts at 9:30, worship with the puppet ministry featured is at 10 a.m. The picnic potluck lunch is at 11. Following that there will be games and fun. Every-

one is invited. ——— I received a nice note from Pat Munn. She says there will be a rummage sale at the Danbury Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. Proceeds will be by donation. No prices will be marked. The sale takes place at the senior center, 8470 E Harbor Road in Danbury Township. While you are on the peninsula that day, stop over at St Paul Lutheran Church at 541 Church Road to enjoy some of the season’s best peaches. Food will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Homemade chicken noodle soup, sandwiches, pie, ice cream, locally grown sliced peaches, salads and beverages are on the menu. I have been watching as a group plans a 100th anniversary of the building of a church. That has inspired lots of research into what was going on in our world 100 years ago. For one thing, the church trustees bought four lots for a total price of $100. That was probably a lot of money then. That year Admiral Peary made it to the North Pole, the first person to accomplish that feat. Work was started on building the Titanic. Postage stamps cost 2 cents each. Zippers had not been invented. In the United States, women could not vote. Henry Ford was building the Model T automobile and the Wright brothers adapted their new airplane for military use. And a woman named Alice Ramsey drove a motor car all the way across the United States, the first time a woman had accomplished that. All of that happened back in 1909. ——— Steve Hartman of CBS News did a report from Lakeside on July 31. I think it was called “The Most Honest Town in the Country.” Hartman said he had been coming to Lakeside on family vacations all his life and he did his story on the honesty and integrity of the people who do business, live or visit there. It was really neat.

Hypnosis can help you lose weight easily and permanently without dieting. Hypnosis allows you to easily let go of your cravings for sweets, unhealthy snacks or emotional eating patterns. In hypnosis your subconscious mind accepts and creates new healthy patterns and habits. Stop feeling bad or beating yourself up, because the fact is willpower doesn’t work. Hypnosis helps you eliminate the selfsabotaging behavior and thoughts that are keeping you from true positive change in your life; and because each session is customized for your specific needs, your eating behavior changes after the first session.

Ottawa County Historical Society volunteers will be cooking tasty “fast food” the old fashioned way at the Wolcott Keeper’s House from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. Hot coals will substitute for microwaves and electric griddles as they make corn bread, Jonny cakes and apple scones from heritage recipes. Maple leaves and soap stone will replace Teflon — Ohio pioneers knew how to save work too. The Wolcott Keeper’s House, 9999 E. Bayshore Road in Marblehead, was the home of Benajah and Rachel Wolcott, first keepers of the Marblehead Lighthouse and some of the first permanent settlers in what is now Ottawa County. It was built in 1820 from local limestone by the builder of the Marblehead Lighthouse. Several OCHS members took hearth cooking training courtesy of a grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundation. Their instructor, Georgeann Brown, of Dundee, Mich., held the first session at the restored Keeper’s House fireplace, and the second at her cooking school, Un Coup de Main, in Dundee. The group learned about frontier cooking methods, ingredients and utensils, and started a collection of books for further exploration of the food lore of the era to share with the visitors to the 1820s stone house. The House is open to visiAugust 12, 8AM - 7PM tors weekdays from June 1 Building A – Roy Klay Hall through Aug. 28, and second Saturdays from 1 to Classes begin Monday, August 24 5 p.m., for the Lighthouse Festival Oct. 10, and by appointment for groups. Schools Terra trustees OK tuition hike The Terra Community College Board of Trustees approved one budget in June. And like so many other state entities, Terra’s trustees were confronted with a shortfall — of a half million. Sen. Mark Wagoner, at last week’s legislative reception, told trustees and elected officials that they should be prepared for yet more cuts later this year. On July 29, the Terra Board, in a five-to-three vote, approved a $4.19 per credit hour tuition increase for the 2009-10 school year, bringing the per credit hour rate to $123. Terra’s tuition has remained the same since 2007 when the legislature froze tuition across the state. At the increased rate, a full-time student taking 15 credit hours would have a tuition bill of $1,857.60 for the semester as compared with the previous amount of $1,794.75. The increased tuition re-

sults in a difference of $62.85 for the semester. Board Chairwoman Helene Zielinski said the increase is imperative in meeting the operating needs of the College. “Terra remains committed to affordable and accessible higher education for our students and their families; however, we must not compromise the quality of that education and the factors associated with providing an excellent academic experience for students. At this point, without any increases for the last two years we have to make an adjustment,” Zielinski said. The 2009 fall term is on track to be one of the largest in the history of the community college. Summer term enrollment was up by 37 percent and the current fall term is up by 33 percent over the same time last year.

“We are keenly aware how devastating this historic economic downturn has been for families in our region.,” said Marsha S. Bordner, Terra president. “It’s incumbent upon us to be good stewards of money and increase operational efficiencies whenever possible. But, we can only shoulder so much of the burden without an operating increase,” she said. Adding 65 new sections due to the enrollment increase has also strained the Terra budget. “We are hiring adjunct faculty members and using every bit of space on the campus for classrooms,” said Bordner. The recent fiscal cuts in the higher education line item of the biennium budget have had a sharp impact on Terra’s overall operations. That and the combination of increased overhead costs contributed to the reluctant approval of tuition increase for Terra students.

Toledo law and leadership students hear from Justice Judith Lanzinger TOLEDO — Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger recently spoke to a group of 30 eighthgrade aspiring lawyers as part of an effort to expose them to careers in the law. Lanzinger visited with the Law and Leadership Institute students at the University of Toledo College of Law. The Law and Leadership program seeks to improve diversity in the legal profession by sparking an interest in the law among students from underserved communities. In its second year, the program expanded to four additional Ohio cities this summer (Akron, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo) from the original sites last year in Columbus and Cleveland. About 140 students are involved in the program overall. The Supreme Court serves as one of the program’s sponsors. “As a former teacher I particularly enjoy talking to students about studying law because law school can ben-

efit them in so many ways,” Lanzinger said. “Even if they don’t become lawyers, no matter what their eventual careers are, completing law school will teach them to think clearly and communicate well — the mark of a well-rounded and educated person.” As part of their curriculum, the Toledo students learn about criminal and civil law; take field trips to private law firms, government offices and courthouses where lawyers and judges work; and hear speakers from all levels of the judicial system. The five-week program ends Aug. 7. Additional partners for the 2009 summer institute include the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Center for Law Related Education, the Ohio State Bar Foundation, Ohio’s metropolitan bar associations, city school districts and Ohio’s eight other law schools: the University of Akron School of Law, Capital University Law School, Case Western Reserve Univer-

Kindergarten Rocks! at the Open Book

A special story hour is planned at the Open Book to help youngsters get ready for school. Some kids are a little afraid of going to kindergarten, or even higher grades but not Dexter. No, he’s not a bit afraid . . . he’s “terrified.” What if he gets lost? Or, what if the teacher is mean? Or, he misses his mom or dad? Or, worst of all, he loses his most important ally, Rufus? “Kindergarten Rocks!” in which 5-year-old Dexter insists he has no qualms about the big day: ‘Kindergarten will be a piece of cake. Nooooo problem.’ However, Dexter allows that his toy dog, Rufus, might be ‘an eensy teensy beensy bit scared.’ Naturally, all fears prove gloriously unfounded.” With the same warmth, exuberance and sly wit that have made her a favorite of booksellers and children, Katie Davis tackles a problem every kid — and parent — has to face sooner or later: first-day fears. And she shows that it’s okay to be scared, but that, as Dexter’s older sister Jessie says, “Kindergarten rocks!” This book, along with several others on hand at the Open Book, will help your child face this big event and look at school as a place to enjoy, meet friends and learn. The story hour will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Open Book, 118 S Front St Fremont. Call 419-332-4601 to save a spot.

sity School of Law, the University of Cincinnati College of Law, Cleveland State University Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, the University of Dayton School of Law, Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law and the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Lanzinger is the only person ever elected to every level of Ohio’s judiciary. The 150th Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, she previously served on the 6th District Court of Appeals for Ohio, the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas and the Toledo Municipal Court. Her varied judicial experience allows her a unique perspective of the state court system. She currently chairs the Supreme Court’s Commission on Superintendence, which recommends rules for all Ohio courts. Lanzinger is a member of Port Clinton Yacht Club.

Around Ottawa County Sip wine and martinis for a good cause Support the Harvest Festival by sampling wine and martinis Saturday night at Slater’s Madison Street Pub in downtown Port Clinton. The fundraiser, from 7 to 11 p.m., will feature drinks and light appetizers catered by Papa Jimmie’s. Tickets are $10 presale or $12 at the door. Ticket prices include five drink tickets for wine or martini. Cash bar will be available as well as 50/50 raffles and prizes. The event is sponsored by Roberts Winery. Harvest Festival committee members are regularly meeting to plan a festival for 2009 that will be similar to past Harvest Festivals — food, entertainment and the ever-popular fruits and vegetables grown locally. This year’s festival will be held Sept. 25-27 and will coincide with Port Clinton Alumni weekend. K96 Country music station located in Sandusky has agreed to do a live remote from the festival on Friday evening for a few hours. Live entertainment will be featured in the beer and food tent on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Acts include Ted Riser presents Hurricane — a Neil Young tribute, Crystal Bowersox, Junk Band and Denny Jesse.

At the regular meeting of the Danbury Township Board of Trustees held July 22, 2009 the following business was conducted: • John Englebeck reported the first paved trail at Meadowbrook has been completed, additional playground equipment has been installed at the township hall athletic complex and the week-long township clean-up has been busy. • Police Chief Mike Meisler reported 355 incidents to date in July. • Zoning Inspector Rhonda Botti Sowers reported five zoning permits written month to date in July. • Trustees are awaiting input from the county engineer on an offer by the Lakeside Association to stripe a crosswalk at Erie Beach Road to make it safer for residents of Otterbein North Shore to attend Lakeside programming. • Trustees reported the three nuisance complaints received at the last meeting have either been corrected or are in the process of being corrected. • Following expiration of the local cable franchise, the board agreed to notify Time Warner Cable of its intent to collect a 3 percent video service provider fee. This fee was previously collected as a 3 percent cable franchise fee. • The board began initial discussion regarding a Natureworks grant-funded shelter house at Meadowbrook. • Dianne Rozak and Botti Sowers attended a post audit

conference with representatives from the state auditor’s office. There were no citations or findings for recovery issued in the audit report which covered 2007 and 2008. Two recommendation of the audit were that the board request an opinion from the Ohio Ethics Commission confirming there is no conflict of interest regarding purchases from Luckey Farmer where trustee John Englebeck is employed and that the board establish written policies for credit card and cell phone usage. Trustees will follow through with both recommendations. • The board determined it would not renew its contract with Avizent as BWC third-party administrator since the township utilizes the legal services of Marshall & Melhorn for employment law and worker’s compensation. • Trustees set a special meeting for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 for the purpose of presenting administrative complex plans to the public. • Bills in the amount of $26,428.27 were approved. • After learning that land is available adjacent to the township’s Bridge Road property where an administrative complex is planned, the board authorized purchase of approximately 5 additional acres from Henry Kihlken at a cost of $12,000 per acre. A survey will be conducted to determine the exact acreage. Purpose of the purchase is to provide for future expansion.

GSE selling Charms for ‘HOPE’ Port Clinton’s GSE Jewelers has gone to the dogs … to the cats too. The jewelry store’s special fundraiser and truck show — featuring a jewelry case lined with dog and cat charms — will run Aug. 13-15. A portion of animal charm sales made during the three-day event will go to the Ottawa County Humane Society. GSE also hopes to bring in some animals from the Humane Society for adoption. The jewelry lines presented are “Nice Doggies and Pretty Kitties,” “Best of Show” and a sterling silver line including more than 200 breeds listed with the American Kennel Club, as well as about 20 cat breeds. “Nice Doggies and Pretty Kitties” was developed in 2002, combining gold, rhodium and techniques known only to a few, to create a collection of some of the most charming and detailed

canine and feline charms in existence. When GSE owners Roger and Linda Velliquette discovered that they could do a fundraiser/trunk show, they thought it would be a great opportunity to help raise funds for the local Humane Society. The jewelry store plans to make this an annual event, and hopes to expand it in the future. The charms range from $30 to a few hundred, depending on what metal they’re made from, and include things like dog bowls, fire hydrants, bones and mice. Pins and key chains are also available. “We can personalize the charm with spots and color markings free of charge,” Velliquette said. “So if your Lab puppy, Mudd, has a distinct brown around his nose, no sweat. So will the miniature version.”

Danbury cross country kicks off next week The Danbury High School Cross Country team will begin practice on Monday, Aug. 10, at 7:30 a.m. Practice will be held at East Harbor State Park meeting at the first shelter area. Athletes are reminded that they need a current physical to participate. Anyone interested in joining the team may call Coach Rinaldo at 419-732-3907 for questions.

Work of local artist on digital display at Ottawa County Historical Museum The Ottawa County Historical Museum recently acquired a digital copy of the work of local artist George Jensen, which is now on display in the museum. A digital photo frame purchased with a grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundation presents a slide show of Jensen’s work, which includes more than 100 landscape oils, pencil drawings and still-life paintings. Jensen was one of the first artists to have a one-man show at the Toledo Museum of Art. He was born in Port Clinton on Aug. 9, 1878, to Danish immigrants Bergetta (Fergasen) and John Jensen, who was a grocer in Port Clinton. Jensen’s first oneman show was held in 1912 just after the Toledo Museum of Art opened its main building on Monroe Street. As a young man, he was associated with advertising art firms in Cleveland and Toledo for 20 years. During that time, some of his commercial art appeared in the former weekly Saturday Evening Post, Time magazine and other national publications.

Jensen studied at the former Zanarian Art College in Columbus, and later attended art schools in Woodstock, N.Y.; Provincetown, Ma,; and Saugatuck, Mich. Jensen studied with such noted American artists as John F. Carlson, George E. Browne and Carl Gaertner. While most of his art career was devoted to painting and teaching, Mr. Jensen worked in several media and specialized in oils. He exhibited paintings in Youngstown; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Detroit; Cleveland; Philadelphia; Minneapolis; and many other cities. Jensen taught art until he was 95. At one time, he taught more than 150 private students and members of the Newcomers Club of Toledo, the Arts and Crafts Club of Montpelier and the OnIzed Art Club of Toledo. He was an honorary life member of the Toledo Artists Club. Jensen died in 1977 at the age of 99. The digital copy of his work on display in the museum was donated by Don Baumann, of Toledo, who along with his twin brother, Ron, are grandsons of Jensen. The paintings on

In addition to considering qualifications and achievements, you’ll want to find someone who makes you feel comfortable and who will work hard for you. Most importantly, you’ll want someone who listens, is responsive to your needs, and will work 24/7 for you.

Coffin’sCorner By Karen Coffin

“Improving Self-Esteem” is often listed as a main reason for children to play sports. This absolutely can happen and there are many opportunities in athletics which can lead to increased confidence. However, I must add a caution that this is not necessarily a sure thing. There is work involved. It’s not enough just to show up. Watch young children celebrate when they learn a new athletic skill. They really get excited. As kids get older, they usually are not as demonstrative when they have the

thrill of conquering a skill, but they are excited just the same. This can happen during a practice or drill and may be just a small part of an overall skill or strategy. When it can actually be used in a competitive situation, it is even sweeter. When an athlete acquires a new way of doing something, it may be weeks or longer before it can be used routinely without concentrating on it during a game or match. Confidence grows. I think of self-esteem as confidence. If it is merely feeling

good about yourself, it can be lost whenever tasks get hard. A confident athlete will perform better. They are secure in their abilities and their worries are about doing their best rather than not making mistakes. They can play well under pressure. They are willing to try new things. They are excited and receptive to challenges. Confidence is gained by being successful…at something which is hard to do. It will be a task which has required learning through practice. Sometimes it requires a lot of practice. In sports, when learning something new, a player may get worse before they get better. They have to believe in their coaches and themselves to persevere through tough times. (Adults need to teach new things with the understanding that mastery may take a while.) Unfortunately, in today’s society, we have come to equate self-esteem with being happy all the time. Disappointments, struggles, frustrations and failures may undermine happiness and many adults try to prevent that. Some people try very hard! They establish few boundaries for behavior. They intervene if their child is disciplined. They blame coaches and teachers if their child doesn’t star or get great grades. We all are protective of our children, but we need to be very careful we don’t protect them so much that we hamper their development into adulthood. If we never let them experience disappointments, struggles, frustrations or failures, how will they learn to deal with them? They will experience adversity as adults. Dealing with unhappiness takes some definite skills. Kids need to go through losing and failures to know how to diagnose problems and work through them. Learning to have resiliency is important. Perseverance solves problems and leads to success. It can be emotionally and physically tough on them at the time, but children who experience success at solving problems at a young age will be strong, resourceful adults. How can you help? First, step back, get the whole story and try to put it in perspective. Is there something positive to teach here? Let the kid do the hard work of handling what has happened. Don’t protect them, but work with them to find a solution. Second, embrace the notion that mistakes are OK. They are integral and unavoidable when learning to play a sport. Pros make errors, for heaven’s sake. Why expect a 16- year-old to be perfect? What we should expect is that the athlete makes a sincere effort to correct whatever went wrong. Adults must be very careful about their body language and verbal responses to mistakes. If the coach screams and throws a clipboard while the parents bury their faces in their hands, the guilty kid is not likely to approach the next chance with confidence. Negative reactions have just made success much harder. Mistakes don’t need to be ignored to create self-esteem; they need to be used to help build it. I will write about positive coaching in another column. ————— Karen Coffin, retired coach, is a member of the P.C.H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame. She speaks to coaches and parents about “Kids and Sports” and facilitates Coaching Education classes for the State of Ohio. Contact her at coachcoffin@ cros.net.

New Lake Erie Islands guide explores nature, history COLUMBUS — Nature lovers and history buffs planning excursions to the Lake Erie Islands have a new resource at their fingertips. Explore the Lake Erie Islands: A Guide to Nature and History along the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail is a 64-page guidebook that provides detailed descriptions of each island and its parks, preserves, and historical sites. Entries also include lists of flora and fauna often spotted in the area, as well as directions, transportation options and contact information. The guide was funded by the Ohio Lake Erie Commission’s Lake Erie Protection and Restoration Fund and created in partnership with Ohio Sea Grant, the Ohio Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail. It was developed to fill a need for the 68 percent of American travelers who seek destinations where they can experience the outdoors. The hope is that the book will also highlight the need to

protect these natural spaces. “The Explore the Lake Erie Islands Guide will be a wonderful resource for visitors, with exciting places to visit and information on birds, plants, snakes, and butterflies, and where to find them,” says Lisa Brohl, chairwoman of the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy. “It should bring an awareness and new appreciation of the natural treasures that the islands hold and the need to preserve them for future generations of visitors.” Unlike traditional Lake Erie tourism, which generally takes place during the warm summer months, resource-based tourism happens year-round. Birdwatchers, in particular, are more likely to visit during the spring and fall migration seasons. An increase in the number and diversity of tourists to the area supports economic development in the Lake Erie region. “This publication will be benefi-

Ohio’s bald eagle count continues to rise COLUMBUS — Reflecting national trends, Ohio’s bald eagle population continues to grow in numbers and expand in territory. Biologists with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife counted a record 215 nests in the state this year, the 22nd consecutive year that the state’s breeding bald eagle population has increased. Of those 215 nests, 113 were known to be successful in producing young eagles. Current reports from wildlife biologists and volunteer observers have estimated a minimum of 197 total young eagles produced in nests in 52 Ohio counties. “As Ohio’s bald eagle population continues to grow, we can expect more sightings and viewing opportunities throughout the state,” said Andrea Tibbels, bald eagle project coordinator with the Division of Wildlife. Last year, Ohio had 184 nests, with 119 of the nests producing an estimated 222 eaglets; a determination of the number of eaglets in 16 nests could not be made. This year, 33 new nests have been identified. In the third year since being removed from the federal Endangered Species List, bald eagles have made a dramatic comeback. Since 1979 — when only four bald eagle pairs were found in the state — the Division of Wildlife has helped reestablish Ohio’s eagle population through habitat development and protection; fostering

WARNING

of young eagles; and extensive observation of eagle nesting behavior. Most eagle nests in Ohio are located along the shores of Lake Erie, but now some are well inland, including nests in Delaware, Hancock, Mercer and Wyandot counties. An average eagle nest ranges from 3 to 5 feet in width and 3 to 6 feet in depth. The nests are usually built high in tall trees. Both male and female eagles share in the incubation and feeding of the young, which begin to leave the nest at about 12 weeks of age. An adult bald eagle has snow-white head and tail feathers. Its body color is very dark brown, almost black. Yellow eyes, beak and feet accent the bird’s appearance. Young eagles do not achieve this appearance until the age of 5 or 6 years. Until that time, they are uniformly dark brown from head to tail feather. Their undersides are mottled white with buff and cream blotches.

cial not only to each individual site, but also to the many businesses and communities throughout the region that depend on these visitors for much of their income,” says Larry Fletcher, executive director of the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau. “I anticipate seeing nature and history lovers spending a lot more time in the Lake Erie Islands area once this guide gets into their hands!” Guidebooks can be downloaded at http://ohioseagrant.osu.edu. Individual copies may be picked up at no cost at the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Welcome Centers in Port Clinton and Sandusky, as well as at South Bass Island’s Aquatic Visitors Center and the South Bass Island Lighthouse. prove both our forests and our economy,” said Gov. Ted Strickland. “The stimulus dollars used to fund the Ohio Woodlands Job Corps is a wise investment that will encourage healthier forests while creating jobs in regions of our state that are severely challenged by underemployment. I would like to thank President Obama and Ohio’s Congressional leaders for helping put Ohioans to work while improving our natural resources.” The Ohio Woodlands Job Corps is scheduled to start 11 six-person crews working and training at seven separate state forests beginning Sept. 14. The headquarters for these crews include: Blue Rock (Muskingum County), Hocking (Hocking County), Maumee (Fulton, Henry and Lucas counties), Pike (Highland and Pike counties), Scioto Trail (Ross and Pike counties), Shawnee (Adams and Scioto counties) and Zaleski (Athens and Vinton counties) State Forests. “While employment of Ohioans is a crucial component of this program, the Ohio Woodlands Job Corps also provides a unique educational opportunity that draws on the expertise of state forestry staff, the Ohio Forest Industry, OSU Extension and Hocking College,” said ODNR Director Sean Logan. “This program will provide valuable training and real world learning experience for corps members interested in making a career in Ohio’s $15 billion wood industry, which directly employs 119,000 people.” Both The Ohio State University and Hocking College are partners in the training component of this program. Four of the 25 total weeks of employment for corps members will be spent training in how to fight wildfires, safely and properly use chainsaws, identify invasive and native tree species, and on logging best management practices. On a forest resource level, participants will spend a majority of their time removing woody invasive plant species from state forestlands. The presence of these exotic invasive plants, such as bush honeysuckle and Tree of Heaven, suppresses native understory species and is detrimental to healthy woodlands. In addition to removing invasive species, the crews will also assist with forest inventory work, timber stand improvement activities, trails maintenance and tree planting activities. As an affiliate of Americorps through The Corps Network, corps members will be eligible to receive up to $2,300 towards their college education. To apply for jobs through the Ohio Woodlands Job Corps visit ohiodnr.com/forestry or ohiomeansjobs.com. The deadline is Aug. 9. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr. com.
