Board of education approves November bond issue
PC City Schools receives $3.2M stimulus for facility construction The Port Clinton City School District recently received word that it qualifies for a minimum of $3.2 million to assist in the construction of new facilities. The funds will be made available to the district through interest-free bonds. This federal assistance is a one-time only opportunity, therefore, the Port Clinton Board of Education voted on Tuesday morning to proceed with a bond issue in November. In June 2009, the 25-member Facilities Action Team, consisting of members of the community and school officials, made a recommendation to the board to place a facilities issue on the ballot. Their recommendation, based on input from two community forums, is: 1 — Build a new middle school on the northwest corner of the high school site (off Jefferson Street; current soccer practice area and portion of the main parking lot) 2 — Remodel and expand Bataan into a grades
Living
pre-K through second building and design a specific grades three to five addition for this building. The current physical separation between primary grades (K-2) and grades three to five will be maintained. (Green space and athletic practice area maintained.) 3 — Minimal upgrades to the high school with a focus on increased efficiency and long-term cost savings. There were a total of 37 school districts approved to receive a share of a pool set aside for school construction. Districts that do not pass their issues in November forfeit the financial assistance. The pool of $100,000,000 is then available to districts that pass their issue in November. Port Clinton City School District is guaranteed $3.2 million but would likely receive more, depending on the number of districts passing their issue.

SoundOff Dear Editor: I was interested to read in Jim Boehm’s article in Sound Off that our health insurance companies are in business for profit. That isn’t news to us. But it is the main reason our costs for health care are so high. It is also the reason that those same companies are paying lobbyists millions of dollars to keep the real facts obscured with lies and distortions. The facts speak for themselves. We Americans spend more for health insurance and get worse results than any other advanced nation on earth. Of course these companies don’t want to compete with a public plan. Public plans across the globe cover all their citizens while giving them choice and the care they need at affordable prices. If Mr. Boehm is going to make claims like long waits for emergency care and surgery, he should at least provide facts to back up such claims. It is past time for the United States to provide real health care coverage for all our citizens. Medicare for all would accomplish this. Nancy Beadle Dear Editor: The former employees of Matthews Boat Company and a guest were recently invited to Put-in-Bay by the Matthews Boat Owners Association, Great Lakes Chapter, to at-
tend their annual “Float In.” The employees were treated to a day on the island, lunch, golf cart usage for the day, and tours of the boats in attendance. It was an incredible day of sharing pride in the craftsmanship of these boats by both the employees and the boat owners, for the first time in the more than 35 years since the plant closed. The former employees would like to thank all who were involved in generously providing this gathering for them. A special thanks to the Matthews Boat Owners Association, Great Lakes Chapter for inviting them to the rendezvous, that alone meant a lot to the employees. The MBOA also provided a nice lunch catered by the Village Bakery for all in attendance. Thank you to: MBOA member Chan Stevens, who provided golf carts to the employees for use for the day; to Miller Boat Line for their generous offer of a free ferry ride to all registered employees from Catawba to Put-in-Bay; to Island Transportation for their help in getting the employees downtown; and to Miller Marina for use of their beautiful Pavilion as the gathering spot for all who attended. Thanks also to The Beacon, The News Herald, and the Put-in-Bay Gazette for helping to promote the gathering and helping us find many former employees
who we might have not found otherwise. Thank you to Peter Huston of the Put-inBay Gazette, Neil Allen of the Sandusky Maritime Museum, Irv and Jean Usner (MBOA), and Kate Dawson (former employee) for going out of your way to help us to record this special day. Thank you to all who helped to make this a day to remember for both the former employees and owners of Matthews Boats. Laura Schultz Bob Reynolds Open Letter to my Representative, Marcy Kaptur: I’ve only lived in your district for the last couple of years so I wanted to find out how well you represented me so I have some questions for you? On Socialized Medicine: If Medicare and Medicaid are broken, why don’t you fix them first? Have you gotten the opinion of doctors in your district about this health care plan? Would you vote to enforce proof of residency to provide health care insurance to immigrants? Would you vote to for Congress to be on the same plan? Who is going to pay for this trillion dollar mandate? How can I trust you to represent my health care issues when you: In 1999 you voted no on establishing tax exempt medical spending accounts? In 2000 you voted no on subsidizing private insurance for Medicare Rx coverage? In 2003 you voted no on capping damages & setting time limits in medical lawsuits? In 2003 you voted no on small business associations for buying health insurance? In 2003 you voted no on limited prescription drug benefit for Medicare recipients? In 2004 you voted no on reporting illegal aliens who receive hospital treatment? Why am I in fear of losing my health care insurance because of the mandates placed on small business? In 2003 you were rated 21 percent by National Taxpayer’s Union, indicating a “Big Spender” on tax votes. Did you read the stimulus bill before you voted for it spending almost $1 trillion of my tax money? How many jobs do you feel you have saved/created in Erie County? Over 96 percent of the time you voted straight party lines which makes me believe you don’t think for yourself. I don’t think you represent me or the people that I have met in this District. I believe the people here are paying close attention to your voting record on health care, the economy and cap and trade. If you don’t represent us now, we will have a chance next year to elect someone who will. Alice Martin Huron Dear Editor: Similar to the elements needed for a successful harvest (rain, sun, oxygen and
nutrients from the soil), certain things must be in place for our upcoming Port Clinton Area Harvest Festival the weekend of Sept. 25. If the support provided to make the Harvest Festival’s first-ever Wine and Martini Tasting fundraiser is any indication, the 2009 Harvest Festival is off to a great start. Thanks to the following businesses and individuals: Aimee Slater for planning/ overseeing the event, providing the location (Slater’s Pub, Madison St. in downtown Port Clinton. Ace Hardware, Budweiser/Maple City Ice, The Book Exchange, Mary’s Blossom Shoppe, Shore Side Pizza, Mozinart, Island House Restaurant and Lounge, Coffee Express, Jet Express, Wendy’s, First Choice Haircutters, Kroger, Dianna’s Restaurant for their donations, and of course to the people that attended and had a great time supporting our cause. Thank you, The PC Harvest Festival Committee To the editor, Being a journalist, I have seen how issues come to the forefront, and then how people tire of them and move on to another subject. There is an initial frenzy of interest, then editors feel that people have heard enough. Despite the myriad of new findings, I am concerned that this is becoming the story about climate change. The science is getting more and more clear, but journalists are not continuing to cover the story commensurate with its importance. We are permanently harming all life on our planet, and all life to come. This is by far THE most important issue. Many scientists, such as Sir James Lovelock, warn that billions of people will likely die this century because of the impacts of climate change, unless we make major changes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The group Christian Aid found that 185 million people are expected to die from the disease impacts of climate change just in sub Saharan Africa this century, unless major changes are made. Climate change is a creeping disaster, as an Alaskan Senator described it. But it is also accelerating and unpredictable, as a 2004 Pentagon report on abrupt climate change details. That report, done by Defense Advisor Andrew Marshall, found that climate change is a much more serious threat than terrorism. The recent passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act by the House of Representatives is the most important step our country has taken to combat this crisis. We must mobilize to pass the act through the Senate. Misinformation, such as claims that the legislation will require home owners to do an energy audit before they can sell their homes are simply not true according to the National Association of Realtors. The insurance industry and several energy companies are in favor of the legislation, which does not go nearly far enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Still, it is a critical step, that will create nearly two million jobs, and clean up our air, water and landscapes as we transition to clean, renewable energy used far more efficiently, while combating the most serious crisis our species faces: climate change. Beacon Bits Do you like barbershop singing? If so, you might like to hear the barbershop BY VIRGINIA PARK quartets on August 14 and 15. This is the 62nd annual local performance taking place on the Lake Erie Islands. On Friday, August 14 the singers will be at the Perry’s Monument Visitors Center on South Bass at 7 p.m. On Saturday, look for them at 7 p.m. at the Middle Bass Island Town Hall. They are great! Also on August 14 at 7:30 p.m. on South Bass there will be a sale of artfully decorated Adirondack chairs. Purchase price is tax deductible as the chairs will be auctioned to benefit three charities: Put-In-Bay EMS/ Fire Department, Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Put-In-Bay Arts Council. Starting August 17 you may schedule a free prostate cancer screening at Magruder Hospital. On or after that date, call 419734-3131 extension 3505 and leave your name and phone number. Want to have coffee with the curator of the Ottawa County historical Museum? If so, coffee, chatter, and goodies will be served up from 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, August 19 at the Museum on Third Street.
By the way, I’ve been told that the dessert is often a scrumptious blueberry coffee cake. This is a great way to learn about the museum. The museum building is being expanded to nearly double its size. Even in these difficult economic times, the proceeds of an inheritance of a local house and scaled back plans have allowed this wonderful addition to proceed. Some new exhibits are planned. This would be a great time for local residents to get involved as volunteers at the facility. Regina Peters sent me a nice note about an event she attended on July 14 when the Town and Country Garden Club of Oak Harbor went to Oregon, Ohio for a special event at the Bayview Bed and Breakfast (7250 Cedar Point Road). In case you should want to call there, the phone number is 419-836-1444. Owners of this Bed and Breakfast business are Jim and Dee Davies. It sounds fascinating and I’d like to see it sometime. Here in part, and paraphrased, is what Regina wrote about this place: As we passed through red metal gates I was greeted with a bubbling birdbath, a flower bed with blooming perennials, and a vista of red and white cottages with a meandering path through the trees. Are you ready to change your life and let go of cigarettes forever? "For the past 45 years, I have smoked 1 to 2 packs of cigarettes a day. I tried EVERYTHING to quit many times. After only one hypnosis session with David Prudhomme I am now a non-smoker. There have been no cravings and no anxious moments. I am now in control of my life. Thank you, Dave." — Ed Verkin, Former Federal Agent
Stop Smoking for Good with Hypnosis Hypnosis has helped millions of people easily quit smoking for good after the first session, without gaining weight and without the need for willpower. Hypnosis allows you to change your subconscious mind to match you conscious desire to be a non-smoker. A study presented October 22, 2007 at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians found that hypnosis was more than twice as effective as quitting “cold turkey,” and over three times as effective as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

of multiple colors were adorning Victorian posts along the pathway. Dee greeted us in her red dress and apron and said, “Come on in and take a stroll around the pathway.” After viewing the property we entered her tea room cottage. What a remarkable little place she has created. The tables were set with beautiful china and hand crocheted doilies. The table cloths were chosen to match the types of tea she served. Ours had hand stitched clover blossoms on it. Inside the tea room was furnished with lighted candles, a collection of different tea pots, corner cupboards, and other pretty adornments. What an enchanting place to sit for a couple hours and chat and sip tea. Dee floated in and out serving us culinary delights and six different teas. She started with thistle tea, shortbread, and different scones. We had clover tea and cold strawberry soup, then a salad with sliced almonds and blueberries. It was followed up by blueberry tea, lemon ginger tea, and the final mint tea was served in tiny individual little tea cups and saucers from different countries. We were all looking to see where our tea cup and saucer came from. The main course was little cucumber and egg salad sandwiches, pitted sweet cherries, a slice of zucchini bread, and the plate was garnished with a sprig of dill and edible ditch lily. When Dee took the main china away, she had another doily under the plate for our desert. Doilies were all different – again with star, butterflies and various patterns. She served lemon delight for desert. It was quite a culinary delight for the senses. She told us to just stay and enjoy the (ambiance) as long as we wanted. The bathroom was full of fancy dresses that guests can wear for tea. All who came back to our table were in awe over the bathroom décor. Also, Dee had various hats that you could try on. I heard someone remark that it was quite different from the teas she had as a child. There was a hammock hanging between two trees behind the tea house. I was thinking after this blissful experience a little nap in the hammock might be welcome. What a marvelous experience! If you have an afternoon free, go to see Bay View Bed and Breakfast. It’s like a fairyland. It’s an enchanting place where finches and cardinals play. Congratulations to Emily and Lauren Shaw of Catawba Island. They just returned from the Ohio State Fair where they represented Ottawa County with their 4H projects. Emily received an “Outstanding of the Day” ribbon for her Health project “First Aid in Action”. She also participated in the 4H Fashion Review with her “Joyful Jumper” clothing project. ner project where she not only received an “Outstanding of the Day” ribbon, but also won the “Clock Trophy” as the overall winner in her category for the three-day event. The girls said that more than 800 young people from all over the state participated in the Fashion Revue in twenty different clothing categories. Each county is assigned one day to participate. Circle and individual judging takes place. Each morning and afternoon session culminates into a grand runway show where members from each category model their outfit while an announcer reads their interests and learning experiences. “Outstanding” ribbons are awarded daily and overall winners are announced on the final day of judging. The Shaw family agrees it was an honor to be a part of the exciting Fashion Revue where they met young people with the same interests from around the state and got to see some really creative costumes. Outer layers, lounging apparel, active sportswear and dress up formal wear were just a few of the categories. Emily and Lauren are members of the “Ace of Clubs” 4H Club. I saw Clyde Lentz of Port Clinton at a picnic and had a nice chat with him. He was telling me how much he enjoys serving as a volunteer at Stein Hospice in Sandusky. He does not work directly with the residents but performs other needed tasks. Later I happened to read the message from my good friend, Jan Buckholtz, Executive Director of Stein Hospice, in the organization’s newsletter. Jan wrote that many families wait a long time before calling for Hospice service and there are a variety of reasons for this. Calling earlier, in fact as soon as a person is diagnosed with a terminal illness, is probably a better decision. Hospice doctors and nurses are experts in pain management, patients can be made comfortable, grief counselors will help family members and caregivers and volunteers are available to help in numerous ways. Jan also wrote that a study of hospice care revealed that it may actually prolong the lives of some terminally ill patients. “Researchers studied 4,500 patients with congestive heart failure or cancer and found that the mean survival rate was 29 days longer for patients who chose hospice care compared to non-hospice patients.” (I think that those additional 29 days of comfort might be very helpful for both the patient and family in dealing with the death and grieving situation.) Jan says, also, that at Stein Hospice “We focus on making each day, however many days the patient has left (to live), full of joy and comfort.” That’s a great philosophy. Why not find out about Hospice care now, before it is actually needed by you or a loved one?

Around Ottawa County OCTA launches new Web site OAK HARBOR — The Ottawa County Transportation Agency has gone live with a new Web site, making it easier than ever for riders like Shawn Shukeat, 10, to get scheduling and fare information, downloadable maps and more. “We put some effort into this because our goal is to be completely accessible,” said Transportation Director Bill Lowe. “We want to make sure the public can get the information they need about our services whenever they want it.” OCTA’s Web site has a variety of new features, including: • A Rider Guide with scheduling and fare information • Frequently Asked Questions • Current weather forecast for Ottawa County • Reduced fare eligibility form for seniors and people with disabilities • Employment application • A place for comments and feedback about OCTA services • Information about the Board of Directors and contact information for staff • Service statistics • Information about the vehicle mainte-
nance and vehicle advertising programs “At OCTA, we talk a lot about how to get people where they are going, safely and on time,” explains Board President Gerry Arnold. “By putting this information on the web, we are making another major stride in our efforts to be more visible to the community. People see the vehicles all over the county, but often don’t realize that OCTA is available to everyone.” Throughout the month of August the OCTA Web site will also feature a community transportation survey as part of a multiagency effort to develop a coordinated plan for Ottawa County. “We hope everyone who sees this will go to www.octapublictransit.org and take the confidential survey,” says Lowe. “And we are especially eager to hear from people who have not called us in a while because maybe they were turned away a few years ago when we didn’t have enough capacity to meet everyone’s needs. As we grow, we have to understand where county residents need to go, what times of day they travel most, and what kind of assistance they may need.” Shawn’s mother, Nicole, is one of OCTA’s drivers, but all Shawn knows is that “riding

Federation of Women’s Clubs holds 115th convention

The Lakeside Federation of Women’s Clubs held its 115th convention in July 8-9 at the Fountain Inn in Lakeside. The theme for the convention was “Keeping Our Convention Going.” Presiding over the convention were co-presidents Evelyn Bachman, of Bowling Green, and Elaine Barth, of Tiffin. Vice president Mary Oyer, of Wauseon, planned the programs. The history of the Lakeside Federation of Women’s Clubs was reviewed in the welcome from Kevin Sibbring, President of the Lakeside Association, and in Detra Bennett’s presentation at the annual luncheon held at Hotel Lakeside. It was pointed out that the idea for the federation came from two members of the Port Clinton Literary and Social Club. In 1888, the membership consisted of four clubs. Membership grew and it was documented in 1896 that the convention was attended by 484 women. Societal changes have made for decreased membership. Today, the federation has a membership of 25 clubs. Wednesday morning of the convention, attendees enjoyed a self-guided garden tour sponsored by the Lakeside Association. Neil Allen, of Lakeside, provided the afternoon program by telling about some of the famous people who visited Lakeside. Included on his list were several U.S. presidents, Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. A beautiful memorial service was conducted by Jo Vernon, of Bowling Green. Members gathered at Green Gables, the Lakeside Women’s Club Home, for a tea hosted by the No Name Club of Bloomville. Thursday morning, Craig Ritter, a football coach from Defiance College, talked of his work through his church with school girls in Jamaica. In his 19 trips to Jamaica he has taught girls sports, but most of all he leaves them with the message of eliminating the word “can’t” from their lives. He believes there is hope for these girls through education. At the annual luncheon held at the Lakeside Hotel, past president Jean Lanning of the Women’s Club of Bowling Green installed officers for the 2009-2010 year. New officers are: co-president Evelyn Bachman of the Bowling Green Women’s Club and Elaine Barth of Tiffin Women’s Club; vice-president Mary Oyer of Wausion Women’s Club; secretary Lou Ann Newlove of Bloomville No-Name Club; and treasurer Mary Etta Hemmerly of the Women’s Club of Bowling Green. Area club members from Port Clinton and Lakeside attended. The 2010 convention will be held at Lakeside July 14.

Northeast Ohio educational group to develop feature-length film addressing athlete hazing PORT CLINTON — Closer Look Films is announcing development of a feature-length film that will dramatically and intensely address the subject of hazing and bullying. The story, “Final Quarter” deals with a young man named Kevin looking back to when he was a middle school student, at a time when hazing would tragically affect his own life. The first portion of the story deals with his antagonism and hazing of Timmy, a neighborhood kid who is desperate for friends and acceptance. While the hazing sequence in this part of the story is unsettling and very sad, what then follows is much worse. Part one of the film will end with the antagonist having to deal with a mighty life lesson about the unexpected consequences and unfairness of hazing and bullying others. The second part of the story is about his best friend Ryan, a small-built youngster who desperately wants to play middle-school football. On speed and determination alone Ryan makes the
team, and when it seems life couldn’t be any better for him, complete with a seventh-grade love interest, “hazing” by a small group of older players, and the aftermath, will result in unforeseen and shattering consequences. The producers of the film admit that this is going to be a very emotional and uncomfortable film for people to watch, but are rigid in their conviction that hazing is every year, getting more and more prevalent and out-ofcontrol in this country, affecting those in middle school through college. Closer Look Films has previously produced “The List” which deals with a young bullied girl mistakenly accused of creating a hit list, and “Glass” about a bullied youngster contemplating suicide. “Final Quarter” is expected to be released before the end of the year. For information about this project, including development or being involved in some manner, e-mail: finalquarter@gawab.com
Singing group Music Staff pose after entertaining the residents of Edgewood.
Singing group ‘Music Staff’ visits Edgewood Manor The ladies and one gentleman of the Edgewood Manor Red Hat Club were pleasantly surprised at their July meeting when the singing group “Music Staff ” with “Ruby Red Hat” performed. Several of the entertainers were part of the Sandusky State Theatre’s production of “Hats! The Musical” which was touring the country. The group of 10 ladies showed up decked out in their red hats and purple accessories. Amid a room covered in artistically placed red and purple decorations, everyone in attendance enjoyed drinks and desserts while listening to the all-female ensemble belt out oldies such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “God Bless America.” “The singing was really good,” said resident Doris Rounds. “Their voices were just beautiful,” A huge piece of red velvet cake and specialty tea and coffee were offered to each of the Red Hatters to tantilize their taste buds. Before the performance came to a close, a drawing was held for door prizes. Ruth Bliss, Doris Rounds and Millie Krempa were all lucky enough to hear their names called. Then even though the singing was over, they all gathered together for a rousing game of Red Hat Bingo.

The American Red Cross would like to thank the many businesses, groups and individuals for their contributions to Red Cross B*A*S*H, another sold-out Club Red fundraiser benefiting our local Red Cross. In addition to disaster relief, educational programs, and collection and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products, the American Red Cross links members of the U.S. Armed Forces with their families during a crisis. Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, the Red Cross quickly sends emergency communications to deployed service members on behalf of their families. We were thrilled to recognize so many veterans, both military and Red Cross, at this event. We were also honored by the presence of PS2 Jennifer Dubbert who, together with her family, spent her last evening before beginning her deployment to Afghanistan supporting the Red Cross. Thank you to Club Red, a women’s auxiliary dedicated to providing educational opportunities regarding American Red Cross programs and services, as well as raising funds for our local office. Club Red hosted a wonderful evening of fun and purpose. A very special thank you goes to the Catawba Island Club and the Stouffer Family for their ongoing support to our mission.

Entertainment Ex Libris in Marblehead
Author on hand to sign books Sunday Author Robin Carrig will be signing copies of her newest novel “Flash Point” Sunday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ex Libris, Marblehead. Flashpoint tells the fictional story of Alexander Hammond, a Union officer held along with Confederates at the Johnson’s Island Prison Depot. Because of what we might today recognize as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the reason for Alexander’s incarceration is revealed to the reader through a number of flashbacks he suffers with no memory of the event afterward. A contemporary story runs concurrently as lighthouse restorationists Simon and Nora Rafferty Lemond work on repairing the 1864 Green Island Lighthouse and in doing so bring to light the fate of Hammond and his companion. An interest in travel and history leads Carrig to the settings and events in her novels as she weaves fact with fiction
to create tales of adventure, paranormal activity and elements of romance. In doing so, she carries the hope that others will become interested in the value of historic sites, including our lighthouses, and set out to learn more. Carrig is the author of “Light Years” which features Simon and Nora restoring an Alaskan lighthouse, and her debut novel, “A Place To Call Home,” set in late19th Century South Dakota. These will also be available for sale. Carrig is currently working on “Keeper,” set on Squaw Island in Lake Michi-
gan. Carrig and her husband, Tim, reside in Kenton where they own a commercial printing company. They have two teenage sons.
Upcoming entertainment at Lakeside The following entertainment is coming up this weekend and beyond in Lakeside: • Lakeside Symphony Orchestra with Opera Circle, 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Hoover Auditorium, 115 Third St. For the sixth concert of the summer season, under the direction of Robert Cronquist, the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra will perform with Cleveland’s Opera Circle Company. Opera Circle was established by Jacek and Dorota Sobieska in 1995 for the enjoyment of music’s timeless beauty and regards to the highest artistic standards for the general public. The group will perform Don Pasquale, a comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti. Don Pasquale is full of delightful, comic intrigue, a contrast to the many dramatic and tragic operas of the period. The aged Don Pasquale’s attempt to marry a young woman and disown his nephew backfires, but eventually ends happily. His young nephew obtains the woman of his dreams and the old Don Pasquale finally gives his blessing to the marriage. The character Don Pasquale will be sung by Ray Liddle, popular Cleveland Opera Company’s bassbaritone. Other characters are Ernesto, performed by Tim Culver, Norina, the lady in question by Dorota Sobieska and Dr. Malatesta, played by baritone James Love. • Loosely Strung, 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Steele
Memorial Bandstand (Central Park). Loosely Strung is a highly energetic band that boasts a five-string banjo, guitars, mandolin, harmonica, tenor banjo, steel-top resonator guitar, a lap steel and a bass. The group plays traditional American music, bluegrass, folk, country, old standards and Dixieland. Members of Loosely Strung include Ted Christy, Dan Epley, Dean Gledhill, Jackie LaMuth and Betty Wingerter. The group formed coincidentally after all members met at a central Ohio jam session and have been together since spring 2002. Loosely Strung enjoys playing for friends, causes and other interesting events. Loosely Strung’s musical background includes family music, square dance band, song leading, gospel group, rock & roll garage band and blues. The ensemble’s eclectic, ever-growing playlist is full of clever lyrics, good stories and memorable melodies. • Marvin M. Cole “Mark Twain,” 8:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, Hoover Auditorium, 115 Third St. Marvin M. Cole has been impersonating and interpreting the writing of Mark Twain for more than 30 years. He has performed in more than 20 states and brings to life the classic tales, Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as other Twain renditions. Cole has been giving one-man dramatic Twain presen-
tations since 1977. He has performed more than 1,000 shows and lectures, including conventions in New York City, Atlanta, Sacramento and elsewhere, as well as on the major river boats of the Mississippi River; Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen. Audiences will enjoy the wonderful representation of Mark Twain. • Lakeside Symphony Orchestra Concert – Lincoln Portrait & New World Symphony, 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, Hoover Auditorium. Dr. Jay Mann will be the narrator in Aaron Copeland’s Lincoln Portrait for the seventh concert in the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra’s summer season. He is professor emeritus of music at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. Dr. Mann earned his Master’s in music from Indiana University and Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati. Also included in the mostly American program will be two selections from Copeland’s prize-winning ballet, Rodeo. “Saturday Night Waltz” and the spirited “Hoe Down” remain concert favorites. The concert will close with Antonin Dvorak’s famous New World Symphony. This was Dvorak’s last symphony, written when he was living in New York as director of the National Conservatory of Music. The now-famous melodies were his conception of what American music should be.
Soothing sounds and melodies end River Front Live! season Professional harpist Karen Svanoe Westgate will be making her 10th appearance at River Front Live! From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Her harp music has been featured on both radio and television. “I love to play the harp. The Lord has given me a wonderful talent that I want to share,” said Karenc. Dave Ninke of Dream Works Entertainment, from Oak Harbor, will be back by popular demand from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. He specializes in ’50s thru ’80s oldies and rock ’n’ roll and usually grants all musical requests. “Dream Works offers a huge musical selection so that I can tailor my performance to the crowd,” says Dave. Health Digital mammography now available at Magruder Hospital Magruder Hospital’s Women’s Center is now taking appointments for its new digital mammography system. The technology, which was installed at the end of July, was purchased from GE Healthcare and is the company’s Senographe Essential system. GE is one of the leaders in the digital mammography technology available in the market today. “There are so many advantages to this digital system. The images are clear and easy to read and it offers an excellent view of the breast, especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue types. Digital mammograms take as little as half the time of film and, if a second opinion is needed, the electronic image can be printed and sent to a consulting physician,” said Linda Badamy, Magruder’s Director of Imaging Services. While the technology is expensive — approximately $420,000 — Magruder had some generous financial assistance from donors who are big supporters of the hospital having this technology. “The Magruder Hospital Auxiliary has really been a great supporter of purchasing
digital mammography. The Auxiliary used the money from four fundraising events, the 2008 charity ball and the last three golf outings, to put toward this purchase. Magruder is very grateful for their contributions,” said Cliff Harmon, president and CEO of Magruder. In addition, funds from the John & Bernice Pluta Family Foundation were also earmarked for the purchase, according to Harmon. “The Pluta Family Foundation has generously given to Magruder over the years. In 2008, they agreed to have their donation put toward digital mammography. So between the generosity of the Auxiliary and the Pluta family, approximately $100,000 of the purchase came through donations to the hospital,” said Harmon. “Patients are thrilled Magruder now has digital mammography. Anything to improve the fight against breast cancer is a step in the right direction,” said Badamy. Magruder’s Women’s Center is taking appointments Monday through Friday and has additional hours on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Otterbein North Shore grants provide personal medicine cabinets One of the things in the new small house nursing facilities that Otterbein Homes has developed is that each resident room has a personal, locked medicine cabinet. This idea virtually eliminates medical error and establishes systems coordination, while doing away with a noisy, medical cart traveling down the hallway. With grants from the Ottawa County Community Foundation and the Albert G. & Olive H. Schlink Foundation, Otterbein North Shore was able to carry this cutting edge concept into its 38 assisted living suites. All rooms are now equipped with a personal, locked medicine cabinet. Nurses and medication aids will have easy access to individual medications, which translates into less error and more quality time with the resident.
Arthritis Foundation presenting program at Magruder Hospital Cherie Chatreau-Grifo from the Arthritis Foundation will present a program on arthritis at noon Monday, Aug. 17, in the Magruder Hospital Conference Center. She will cover varieties and causes of arthritis as well as the management and treatment of the condition and be available for questions and answers. This program is part of the monthly health education luncheon series put on by Magruder and it is open to the public. Cost for the lunch is $6 and interested individuals can RSVP to 419-734-3131, ext. 3363, by noon Friday.
Blood drives coming up in Ottawa County The American Red Cross is working hard to make sure there is an ample blood supply on hand at all times — which means volunteer blood donors are always needed. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit givelife.org for information. If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to present valid identification. The following blood drives are coming up in Ottawa County: • Saturday, Aug. 15 — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Church of the Nazarene, 205 W. 4th St., Port Clinton, appointments only. • Monday, Aug. 17 — Noon to 6 p.m., St. John United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington, Genoa. • Tuesday, Aug. 18 — Noon to 6 p.m., St. John United Church of Christ, 448 East Rice, Elmore.

With football season looming, fans are planning parties for some of the big games. And though wings and pizza may be the go-to meals, two Marblehead entrepreneurs are hoping to help locals mix it up. A.J. Rusch, 48, and Marina McManus, 24, are cooking up Eastern European classics and selling the tasty treats at their new shop, European Yummies, at 5644 E. Harbor Road, Marblehead. “We want to cater to the football fans, give them something other than wings, said Rusch. Choices, all homemade or Ohio-made, include pierogies, kielbasa, halushki, stuffed cabbage and peppers, salads, kielbasa, Slovenian sausage, smokies, marinated garlic and a new addition, pirozhki, which is a pizza-like dough stuffed with grilled onions and either corn beef or ground sirloin. The pierogies, sold for $8 a dozen, are filled with potato, potato and cheese, sauerkraut, sweet cheese and corn beef. The stuffed cabbage, at $6.99 a pound, are heavy on the meat, light on the rice — just like grandma’s recipes, they said. Rusch, who grew up near Cleveland, said he’s been coming to area his whole life but made Marblehead his home eight years ago. Marina, on the other hand, is a little farther from home. The Russian-born cook and part-time sketch artist, makes the food with Rusch and serves the carry-out customers. Though the pair are transplants to the area, they are prepared for the looming tourist exodus. “We know it’s going to die down in the winter but we’re hoping for local support, said Rusch, and the pair not only plans to stay open, they are working on opening a second location. The new store, on Cleveland Road in Sandusky, will feature the same homemade “yummies as the Marblehead shop and both will add soups to the menu for
the colder months — crab bisque, borscht and American favorites like chicken and dumplings. Also coming soon will be a selection of ethnic baked goods including baklava and nut roles. The pair share the Marblehead space with neighbor Doreen Kirk — a Clint Eastwood fan who runs Make My Day Coffee CafÊ featuring coffee, tea, espresso, cappuccino, smoothies and traditional American treats like zucchini bread, brownies and cookies. In addition to carry-out service, European Yummies will set up at local festivals, deliver and cater weddings, parties ‌ whatever. To place an order or for more information, call 419-734-
Message from the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce president On May 29, 160 members of the Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce received an e-mailed invitation to participate in an online survey. Responses were collected by Creative Option C, and remain completely unanimous. A strong majority of members read the newsletter or visit the Web site for information. A majority of members will call or visit the office. Nearly 72 percent of respondents have attended a Business After Hours in the past year, whereas only 46 percent attended the spring banquet and 37 percent attended the Lighthouse Festival. Two-thirds of respondents indicate they have volunteered for or donated to Chamber events. 97 percent of respondents are current members, and nearly one-third have been a member for more than 10 years. Respondents register a high degree of satisfaction with the quality, value, and timeliness of services, as well as with communications and responsiveness. More than 90 percent of respondents say it is important to pursue joint activities with other area Chambers. Nearly 94 percent of respondents say they plan to renew their membership in the Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce; 72 percent indicate they would recommend membership to other area businesses.
Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce 5681 East Harbor Road Marblehead, OH 43440-9788 419-734-9777 • www.marbleheadpeninsula.com The friendly, hardworking people, and the way they conduct services rises to the top of the strengths list. No single idea rises above the others for things to change or things to offer in the future. Opinion is split concerning whether the board should hire an executive director. It is noteworthy that many respondents declined to answer a majority of the questions. Such lack of need to offer opinions can be fairly interpreted to mean members are largely satisfied with their chamber, its leaders and services provided. I’m very excited and pleased! This is your chamber working for you. Always feel free to call the office or me with any suggestions or comments that we as a chamber can do. Thank you, Ann Duez

I’m really amazed at how easy this has all come about. I am very impressed with hypnosis. It’s nothing like I’ve seen on TV. I was awake and aware the whole time. It was a great experience.
