The City of Port Clinton has launched a new initiative on the Internet. Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester has had a six-minute video professionally produced by part-time local resident John Seidell touting the city and, especially, the Water Works property for economic development. The video has been posted on Hymore-Tester YouTube and can also be seen on www.thebeacon.net and the WPCR Web site at www.portclintonradio.com. ——— We had 111 entries to our Find Wylie Contest this week. Our winner is Bertha Sanns, of Port Clinton, who found Wylie hiding in the Herman’s Furniture ad on page 9A. Bertha wins a pass to Monsoon Lagoon. Good luck! ——— I am very sorry to learn of the death of Annette Reider, who was one of my mentors in media. For many years, Annette and her husband Bob published the Ottawa County Daily News and in 1961, they started WRWR radio, which is where I got my start. Annette and I have remained friends ever since. Her son Bobb called me Monday night with the sad news. We also lost Micki Herl following a courageous battle with cancer last weekend. She too was a great lady. ——— There will be a Family Fun Day at Community Markets in Port Clinton this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be root beer floats for $1, games, crafts and prizes for the kids, a DJ, a hamburger and hot dog cookout and much more. Wylie Walleye will also make an appearance. ——— They are having a “Dollar Dawgs and Buck Beers” open house Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Nor’Easter Club off Ohio 53 North. Leadership Ottawa County is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with the biggest class yet. Eighteen people will take part in the community leadership development program that seeks to prepare, involve and sustain leaders from diverse backgrounds. Participants have the ability to broaden their leadership skills as well as establish a personal and professional network of individuals who are active in the community. “People who have lived here 40 and 50 years say ‘I never knew that about Ottawa County,’” said LOC’s board president and 2004 grad Cathy Allen. “They really value the networking opportunities they get whether its classmates, speakers, alumni …” The program was developed by a group of community leaders from local organizations including the OSU Extension Office, United Way and Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce. Former OSU Extension educator Jim Wiedenheft served as first president of the board and he, along with other founders, developed a curriculum based on similar programs. Members of that first board helped with each class. “I was involved with planning and conducting a couple of the monthly classes based on the outline of leadership

Libraries cut hours after slash in state funding Local libraries are feeling the effects of the state’s recently approved budget. Funding to area facilities has been slashed by more than 30 percent and so far in Port Clinton and Oak Harbor, hours are the first things to go. Ida Rupp Public Library will now be closed Wednesdays and Sundays with shortened hours the rest of the week: 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Ida Rupp anticipates a 35 percent reduction in funding because of the cuts that became effective retroactively to July 1. The Oak Harbor Public Library is currently operating with a 31 percent decrease in funding. As a result, that facility has also reduced its hours of operations. The library will be closed Sundays but open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Additional reductions will likely continue into the future — including reductions in workers and supplies. “Staffing cuts will be announced before Sept. 1,” said Barbara Wenzinger, Ida Rupp Board president. “Without a director it makes it very difficult to work through these changes.” Former director James Crawford recently left his post after 10 years at the facility to accept the position of director of the Lakewood Public Library. The search for his replacement has been put on hold. “We’ve had to raise our prices on copies and of course we won’t be ordering as many materials for a while,” said Robin Vail, head clerk at the Oak Harbor Library. With more and more people coming in to file for unemployment benefits and search for jobs, the crowd is still the same, just forced to work faster and with more competition for machines. “I’ve seen quite an increase of people coming in,” Vail said. As for the future of the facilities, a lot is still unknown. “We’re still trying to figure out exactly where we stand,” said Wenzinger. “At this point, we are going to have to consider an operating levy.”

Marcy Kaptur: I usually make the small amount of correspondence that I send to you in a one-page letter because I am led to believe that you won’t read past one page. I am making an exception and I hope that you will too. In the past I didn’t feel the need to correspond with you, but lately I believe that I don’t have a choice. I am not part of a mob, and I am certainly not unAmerican. But I am really upset about the management by crisis being exhibited by both the executive and legislative branches of our government. Starting last October, I have observed a hurry-up-and-get-it-done mentality by congress. You don’t take time to read the bills let alone study them to come up with a viable solution to something that may or may not be a problem in the first place.

Just because you hear someone say that the sky is falling, you don’t need to start a panic to pass bills that do not help those of us in your districts. Your terms of office are measured in years not weeks. This letter is aimed at both parties. From the polls that I have seen the approval rating of congress is as low as 17 percent and as high as 24 percent. This means that the people in this country are very unhappy with your performance. They are probably as tired as I am of having programs formed upon us that require higher taxes. You can’t tell me that we can continue the spending program that you are on that will not have to be paid for eventually. I can’t see burdening our grandchildren with all of the debt that this Congress is imposing on us. You all seem to be more concerned with the illegal aliens than you are for the people who have made this country a success. How about taking the money that you want to spend on health care for them and instead use that money to send them back where they came from and secure our borders? This has been done in the past and could be done again today with the proper leadership. This would also greatly reduce the numbers of people that don’t have healthcare. Speaking of health care. I hear that Medicare and Medicaid are going broke. Surprise, surprise. The government runs the post office, Amtrak, social security and the department of energy that all are losing money. I heard the president say that UPS and FedEx are making money. It seems that with good management the post office and the others could too. We the taxpayers are funding these programs that you say are a bargain. But all of the money that you spend is tax dollars, the government doesn’t have any money except our tax dollars. So now you want to impose a health care program (that according to the latest polls) most of us Americans do not want. How about a study on a fix for Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, etc. in lieu of forcing a new government-run program of socialized medicine on us. If you are bent on passing a bill, how about putting it in a referendum on which we can all vote. While I am at it, I think that all of you should be able to think for yourselves. I am tired of hearing that the other party did it to us so now we are going to do it to them. Sounds like a bunch of school kids. Don’t separate th parties by an aisle, this encourages cronyism. Maybe if you seated yourselves in alphabetical order we could have more dialog. Open up all of your meetings. Don’t continue to shut members of the other party out. Above all, don’t put yourselves above the people that you are supposed to represent. You have the best health care programs, the most lucrative retirement programs, all paid for by the taxpayers. for your own health care, but with the government checks that are funded by the taxpayers. I think that you should be under the social security program like the people that you represent, and then have to put in at least 20 years for retirement again like the people that you represent (another reason for term limits). Any new health care bill should include the provision that all members of the executive, judicial and legislative branches of our government must be under the new government plan. I believe that the town hall meetings are the place to state how you feel about health care. But I am led to believe that the majority of the townspeople don’t get the warning about what and where the meetings will be. I understand that in Columbus, the town hall meeting was filled with people who had received e-mails from the White House long before the meeting was announced to the public. I hope that this is wrong. I have also heard the overflow room was not filled, but the public was turned away. If the people appear to be extremely unhappy it is because the people are extremely unhappy. If it sounds like I am saying that you put yourselves above the people that you represent, you are right. What is fair for you should be fair for all. Let me make some bullet points for you: • Balance the budget. • Quit management by crisis. • Study and solve the existing problems first. • Reduce taxes to encourage the economy • Think fairly; don’t impose programs we question on us. • Be Fair. Be like the people that you represent. • Don’t turn your back on the people that made this country great. • Don’t exempt yourselves from programs that affect the rest of the American people. Trying to cut health care costs and improve coverage will be a formidable challenge in the face of savage opposition from the powerful lobbies of the more than 400 for-profit health insurance companies. There is one thing I don’t understand. The Republican mantra is that the government health care plan would be a catastrophe. Try these: â&#x20AC;˘ Coffee maker: Run one brewing cycle of cold water with Âź cup vinegar. Pour that out and then run another cycle using fresh water. â&#x20AC;˘ Teakettle: Boil a kettle full of water and Â˝ cup vinegar for 10-15 minutes in the teakettle to remove mineral de-

Rinse completely with water. â&#x20AC;˘ Dishwasher: Run the rinse cycle with Â˝ cup vinegar in an empty dishwasher to open clogs in the drain lines and freshen the machine. â&#x20AC;˘ Microwaves: If you have a lot of splatters lining the inside of your microwave, make a solution of one cup of water and Âź cup of vinegar and put it into a glass cup. Place in microwave oven and boil the water for 3 minutes. Carefully remove the cup and wipe out the oven with a damp cloth or sponge. â&#x20AC;˘ Refrigerator: Wipe interior and seals with a cloth or sponge dampened with vinegar. â&#x20AC;˘ Oven: After cleaning your oven as usual, wipe down with the interior surface with a solution of 50 percent water and 50 percent vinegar. It may help prevent future build-up of grease. â&#x20AC;˘ Stained aluminum pans: Boil the pans in a large kettle filled with water to which you have added 2 tablespoons of vinegar. â&#x20AC;˘ Broiler pan with burned on food residue: While pan is still warm, add 2 cups vinegar and Âź cup sugar to residue and let it soak for one hour. Then clean it by washing it as you would any other pan. â&#x20AC;˘ Counter tops: Wipe over them frequently with undiluted vinegar to maintain their shine. All the above hints were found in a little book called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over 100 Helpful Household Hintsâ&#x20AC;? and were slightly rewritten. â&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

Citing an article in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;New York Times,â&#x20AC;? written by Tara Parker Pope, the local newsletter says that an active social life appears to delay memory loss as people age. It seems that strong social ties with family, friends and community groups can help preserve the health of our brains as we age. Conversely, â&#x20AC;&#x153;social isolation may be an important risk factor for cognitive decline.â&#x20AC;? The article suggests that when people are helping to care for an elderly person, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to realize that for the person to have someone to count on or to lean on for support may not be as important as helping the elderly person be completely engaged and participating in our society. There are many avenues to accomplish this. Family networks can help, friendship networks can help â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even social engagement by volunteering in civic organizations can help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to have all of these things. Schools Net books, digital readers piloted in classrooms Technology Director Neal Barrett presented an update and implementation report relative to district technology at the July 28 meeting of the Benton-CarrollSalem Board of Education. Net books and digital readers, provided by stimulus grant money, were piloted in fourth-grade classrooms during the 2008– 2009 school year with positive feedback from teachers and students. Net books are

mini laptop computers, similar to notebook computers, but smaller with less onboard computing power. Digital readers are devices on which books and publications may be downloaded to carry wherever you go. Training sessions for teachers in the proper use and handling of laptops for their students is ongoing. The district utilizes 18 smart boards at present — six at the high school, four at the middle school and eight throughout the four elementary buildings. Not only are the bats and balls very different from today’s equipment, so are the rules of play. A player who swears, argues with the umpire or leaves his shirt tail untucked faces a fine. Respect for other ballists and polite behavior are the rule. The Squires’ home matches are played in the open field behind the Hayes Museum. The final home match of the season is 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, with the Clodbuster Base Ball Club.

4-foot by 4-foot float. The contestants will wear football helmets and life vests for their protection. The object is to knock the opponent into the water using the pugil stick. The program, which ends Aug. 31, is available to income-eligible households in the four-county area of Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa and Seneca counties where there is a person with a certifiable medical condition relieved by the use of an air conditioner or a household member 60 years of age or older. The program pays for either an air conditioner or electric bills up to $175 for those 60 years of age or older. Any household with no member 60 years of age or older, but a member with a certifiable medical condition of a breathing disorder can receive assistance on an electric bill up to $175 only. In July, the program assisted 213 households with electric bill payments and 45 households with air conditioners. In 2007, this program served 371 households by the end of July at a cost of $75,373. However, beginning last year, the program was cut to only two months at a much lower funding level.

Of the 213 households, 62 in Sandusky County received utility bill payments and 15 received air conditioners; 38 in Ottawa County received utility bill payments and 7 received air conditioners; 66 in Seneca County received utility bill payments and 12 received air conditioners; while 47 in Wood County received utility bill payments and 11 received air conditioners. This assistance is available only for those 60 years of age and over. These residents have the option of a one-time payment of $175 toward the electric bill or an air conditioner, whichever they choose. Residents who do not meet the age requirement can still find assistance if they have a member of the household with a medically certified breathing disorder. These households can receive assistance of up to $175 for electric bill payments. In addition, Emergency Services continues to certify residents for enrollment in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan for customers of Columbia Gas, the American Electric Power Company, Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison and Suburban Gas. VFW Auxiliary’s polka fest a success By Mary Ann Monak The Marblehead Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7572 Ladies Auxiliary held its annual fundraising polka fest from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug 8. This event was the Whitey Priebe Polka Fest in loving memory of Post 7572 comrade Whitey Priebe, who originated this festive occasion in 2000. Ladies Auxiliary members assisting, providing entrees and supporting President Debbie Garrard included Jean Dewey, Camille Sobolewski, Blanche Baillie, Donna Ungvarsky, Elaine Roth, Mary Glovinsky, Carol Hamit, Alice Peroni, Lilah Groene, Donna Renton, Roseann O’Keeffe, Mary Ann Monak and Jeanne Snowball, with her 7-month old daughter Josie. Special thanks Commander Bob Peroni of the welcoming committee; to comrades Bob Dewey, Terry Rahner, Dave Groene, Pat O’Keeffe, Dave Glick and Dan Monak; and to Men’s Auxiliary President Mike Garrard with members Terry Glovinsky, Frank Zalar, John Batcha; and post members Harvey McGiver, Doc McCormick and Dan Elchisco for their support. Timing for their fishing trip was perfect for the second year in a row. John and Libby Batcha, with their children Nick, Kate and Anna added to the afternoon fun and brought back pleasant memories of John’s father, past Commander Emil Batcha playing the drums to many polkas and the

music our families loved. Another former drummer in the Mike Batcha band was Anthony “Jim” Glovinsky, father of Terry Glovinsky. Terry and Mary were there to enjoy the afternoon fun and to promote Polish Pride. “Happy Campers” were Donna Renton, Harvey McGiver, Edna Zalar, Bob Dewey, Dale M. Fitterling of Pennsylvania VFW Post 8795, and Jessica Garrard. “Happy birthdays to John Batcha, Jean Dewey and Debbie Garrard. Thank you to Frank Moravcik and the members of his band for bringing to VFW Post 7572 the music of our lives; a posthumous thank you to Whitey Priebe, who introduced Frank Moravcik to us; thank you to the workers Commander Bob Peroni, Quartermaster Bob Dewey, Jean Dewey, Camille Sobolewski, Blanche Baillie, Donna Ungvarsky, Alice Peroni, and Carol Hamit; thank you to Jim Leihenseder for his special donation; and to Jessica Garrard for the donation from her 50/50 drawing winnings. Wagoner and Murray host Lake Erie Shores & Islands Legislative Days Over two days, more than 100 members of the Ohio General Assembly, state officials and other key policy makers recently had the opportunity to participate in activities and events that showcased the region’s travel and tourism industry and the importance of Lake Erie to the state as a whole as part of Legislative Days. State Sen. Mark Wagoner (R-Ottawa Hills) and State Rep. Dennis Murray (DSandusky) hosted the event. “I am pleased that so many legislators joined Representative Murray and me for two full days on Lake Erie. Lake Erie Shores & Islands Legislative Days gave us the opportunity to emphasize not only the impor-

tance of having a healthy Lake Erie, but also the importance of travel and tourism to our area. I want to thank everyone who volunteered their time and provided the resources to make this event possible,” Wagoner said. “Lake Erie is Ohio’s single greatest natural resource. The lake and its shoreline are significant drivers of the local economy,” Murray said. “Legislative Days highlighted the linkage between obtaining both present and future returns on these assets because the Lake Erie of the 1970s produced few tourists or fish while the Lake Erie of 2009 yields a bountiful harvest of both. It was important for key decision makers from around the state to learn about Lake Erie’s past suc-

cess as well as looming and emerging challenges.” Participants in Lake Erie Shores & Island Legislative Days enjoyed: a luncheon at the Crescent Pavilion followed by a tour at Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial; a tour of Gibraltar Island, which included Cooke’s Castle, Ohio State’s Stone Laboratory, information on diving Lake Erie, water snake exhibits and trips on a research vessel; an informational dinner at Niagara Event Center which featured keynote speaker Amir Eylon, Ohio State Tourism Director; a choice of tours at Kelleys, Middle Bass or South Bass Islands; a luncheon highlighting Ohio Tourism at Crew’s Nest Pavilion, and

Wagoner noted that while many participants were aware of the recreational opportunities in the region when they came, he was pleased that more people had learned about the quality programs and research conducted at Stone Lab by the time they left. Stone Laboratory is a teaching and research facility for The Ohio State University and the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States. Here, researchers from 12 agencies and academic institutions work to improve the overall health of the Great Lakes.

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District will hold a special election for District Board of Supervisors in conjunction with the District’s 58th annual banquet and meeting Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds. Tickets for the barbecue chicken or pork chop meal can be purchased at the SWCD office at 240 W. Lake St., Unit B, Oak Harbor. One board member will be elected to a three-year term of office. Candidates in this year’s election are: Richard Thorbahn, of Oak Harbor, and Connie Sandwisch, of Graytown. You may cast your ballot at the annual banquet or by Sept. 29 at

The district is funded by the Ottawa County Commissioners and county funds are supplemented by funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The district is governed by a five-member board of county residents. Board members serve staggered three-year terms.

Danbury Township Trustees At the regular meeting of the Danbury Township Board of Trustees Aug. 12, the following business was conducted: • Police Chief Mike Meisler reported 533 incidents in July and 201 incidents to date in August. • Zoning Inspector Rhonda Botti Sowers reported nine zoning permits processed in July and three permits during the month of August to date • The Board of Zoning Appeals will hold two hearings on Aug. 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. • Trustees received notice that the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court has ruled in favor of the Board of Zoning Appeals which denied two variances in 2007 to Lakeside property owner Gerry Drackett. • Following receipt of construction guidelines from the county engineer, trustees will negotiate an agreement with the Lakeside Association for a crosswalk on Erie Beach Road at North Shore Boulevard. Lakeside has agreed to stripe and maintain the crosswalk. • The nuisance complaint at 238 Sunnydale has been corrected and the complaint regarding Lot 26 of West Harbor Landings is still pending. • Property at 202 Sunnydale was again declared a nuisance and notification sent to mow the property or trustees will order the work done. • The board approved a resolution authorizing collection of a 3 percent video service provider fee. This fee was previously collected as a 3 percent cable franchise fee.

• Discussion continued regarding a Natureworks grant-funded shelter house at Meadowbrook. • The board received an opinion from the Ethics Commission regarding trustee Dave Hirt and purchases from his employer, Bill’s Implement which is owned by his brother. The opinion stated that purchases will not constitute a violation of the ethics law if certain conditions are met. The Commission, however, does not have statutory authority to interpret ORC 511.13 as it applies to public contracts and recommended the board consult with the township’s legal counsel regarding this section. Trustees will seek further advice from the county prosecutor. • Trustees authorized Keith Heilman Excavating to mow phragmite at Meadowbrook at a cost of $275. • A resolution was adopted to initiate text amendments converting the zoning resolution to a digital Clearzoning format. • A request was received to lower the speed limit on Mistic Bay Boulevard and Mistic Bay Point. The request will be submitted to the county engineer. • Trustees approved the transfer of $500,000 from the Marblehead Bank checking account to STAR Ohio investment following the receipt of the second half property tax settlement. • July financial reports were approved as were bills in the amount of $104,733.42. • Trustees held an executive session to discuss purchase of property.

Ohio Wildlife Council hears proposed fishery management changes COLUMBUS — The Ohio Wildlife Council is considering proposals that will affect Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch, crappies in 44 inland lakes, and Ohio River catfish according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. A proposed change to the timing of when bag limits are set for Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch will be discussed. This proposal would make new bag limits effective on May 1 instead of March 1. Changing this effective date allows for the walleye and yellow perch quotas set by the Lake Erie Committee to be considered prior to setting the bag limits. The Lake Erie Committee comprises fishery managers from Michigan, New York, Ohio, Ontario and Pennsylvania. The committee’s work is

facilitated by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, a Canadian and U.S. agency on the Great Lakes. Each year the committee sets the total allowable catch for walleye and yellow perch from Lake Erie. Total allowable catch represents the number of fish that can be caught by sport and commercial fishers without putting the stocks at risk. From the total allowable catch for the lake, individual state quotas are calculated. Open houses will be held at the same day and time in Akron, Athens, Columbus, Findlay, Port Clinton and Xenia from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Information recorded at these open houses is forwarded to the division’s central office in Columbus, where proposed rule changes to the Ohio Administrative Code are considered. It’s almost time. Almost time, that is, for Yvonne and Charles (Chuck) Swartz, of Port Clinton, to head to Minot, N.D., to the largest Scandinavian festival in America, the Norsk Hostfest. In late September, the local couple will attend the celebration as special guests at the annual Sondre Nordheim Wreath-laying Ceremony where Chuck will present a wreath to lay on the grave of Nordheim, the father of modern-day skiing. Chuck was chosen for the honor because the famous skier was his great-great grandfather. As a child, Chuck had always known about the connection to his famous relative. But it wasn’t until they made a business trip to Minot in the mid-1990s and met with city officials that the search for more details began. Chuck saw a plaque on the wall with the name Sondre Nordheim, and he mentioned that it was his great-great-grandfather. In the discussion that followed, he was asked for a picture of Sondre because there was no official portrait there. “That day I became more aware of how famous he really was,” Chuck said. From that point on, Yvonne began the project of digging into the family ancestry and searching for information on the Internet. Norheim lived from 1825 to 1897 and played a critical role in changing skiing from a utility activity to a sport that could be enjoyed by many throughout the world. He changed the design of the ski equipment from a single birch or leather strap for each foot, to bindings that kept the foot secured at both the toe and heel thus allowing skiers to make turns instead of only going in a straight line. The turns led to slalom skiing, high-speed skiing and ski jumping. He was known for skiing off the rooftop of his father’s cottage and later became famous for the Telemark and Christiana turns. Nordheim has an eternal flame and statue in his honor located in Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot as well as a flame and statue in Morgedal, Norway, where he was born. He is also the subject of a 1971 movie made about his life that was broadcast in Norway and later translated into English. “He was never in it for the fame,” Chuck said. “He just loved the sport.” During the ceremony in September, Chuck plans to say how honored he is to have someone in his family who has contributed so much to people all over the world and how honored he is to have this history to past down for generations to come. He will introduce members of his family who were also invited to the celebration: his mother Marlys Swartz, and siblings Toni Holmes, George, Richard and Paul Swartz, all from other states. Among other guests they will be meeting is H.E. Wegger Christian Strommen, Norway’s Ambassador to the United States. Does skiing run in the family? Although he skied as a child, ice skating was Chuck’s sport of choice.
