BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

This Sunday will be the 49th annual Green Island Race hosted by Port Clinton Yacht Club. The starting sequences begins around 9 a.m. Sunday morning. The starting area was moved west this year so the best place to view the starts probably would be at Dock's Beach House on West Lakeshore Drive. More than 60 auxiliary sailboats from Toledo to Detroit to Sandusky to Vermilion are expected to participate. ——— We had 145 entries to our Find Wylie contest this week. Our winner is Ludmila Duran who found Wylie hiding in the Desdemonas ad on page 6A. Ludmila wins a gift certificate to Kokomo Bay. Our “Win it on the Web” contest winner this week is Steve Karl who was selected from among 78 entries. He wins a $20 Friendship Food Stores Gas Card. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week. When you find him, just drop a note at our office or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net. While you’re there, just click on the Win it on the Web icon and enter yourself for a $20 gas card also. Good luck! ——— The youth group ICYC is adding two more P’s to this weekend’s Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival with Painting and Pitching. Donations will be accepted for face painting from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and a cornhole tournament is planned Saturday. Registration begins at 2 p.m. at Mendoza’s Restaurant just west of the Knights of Columbus building. The tournament will begin at 3 p.m. The tournament will be double elimination with a maximum 16 teams. There will be two playing sites with eight teams at each. The cost is $25 per team with the winning purse dependant on the number of teams that sign up. The tournament will follow American Cornhole Association Rules but will include a no skunk rule, no “win by 2” rule and no going back to 13 if you go over 21. The first team to 21 wins. Proceeds from the events will go to pay for abstinence speaker Jason Evert who is coming to talk to the Port Clinton High School students and possibly Danbury students as well. For more on this weekend’s Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka festival in downtown Port Clinton, check out Northcoast Live inside today's Beacon. ——— Don’t miss the final chicken and rib barbecue and bake sale of the season at Community Market parking lot in Port Clinton Sunday, Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Ottawa County. ——— Calling all cat lovers: Special reduced adoption fees are available for cats and kittens for the month of September at the Humane Society of Ottawa County. Cost is $25 for one or adopt a pair two for $40. They have a wide variety of healthy and friendly cats and kittens, spayed or neutered, up to date on all shots just waiting for you to invite them into your home and become part of your family. Hours are open 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Stop in or call 419-734-5191. ——— Due to popular demand, Gentle Gem Yoga has been extended through September 24. Classes meet on Gem Beach on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Bring a blanket or a beach towel. A $5 donation is appreciated, with a portion going to United Way in Ottawa County. So far this summer, more than $1,100 has been contributed to United Way in Ottawa County. Contact Donna Lueke at 419-341-4110 for information or to see if the class will be held in case of questionable weather. ——— A benefit is planned for Bill Stubblefield Sept. 12 at Rack Attack. Bill, who has a son in high school and one in middle school, was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma. He had a secondary tumor removed from his brain several weeks ago and surgery last week on the primary source of the melanoma. He will be undergoing radiation, further testing and treatment. To help with the unexpected costs associated with the illness, friends and family have come together to plan a day of fun. To donate, come down to the event from noon to 7 p.m. Activities include an 8-ball pool tournament with sign up at 11 a.m. Preregister by calling Matt Heath at 419-627-6780. A cornhole tournament is planned at 3 p.m. and Grandma’s Backyard BBQ will be serving chicken dinners for dine-in or carry-out from noon to 7 p.m. Dinner tickets are $7 pre sale or $9 the day of the event. A DJ will be on hand and a special performance by Pumpin’ Ethyl is planned along with a variety of raffles.

Despite a decline across the state, home sales in the Firelands Association of Realtors area jumped by 6.3 percent in July, according to statistics released by the Ohio Association of Realtors. That jump was in comparison to July 2008 sales. This is the second straight month of good news on the home sales front. We have been hearing about increased activity from local Realtors for several months and the July numbers tend to support that a modest turnaround might be in the works. "The MLS market areas of Port Clinton, Catawba Island Township, Danbury Township, Oak Harbor, and the Islands reported 44 units sold in July 2009, up 2 units from July 2008," said Leonard Partin, broker for Jack Bradley Realty. This shows a 4.5 percent increase in unit sales. In the Firelands area, covering most of Erie County as well as eastern Ottawa County and most of northern Huron County, there were a total of 219 home sales in the month of July, compared with July 2008’s 206 units sold. However, the average sale price dropped from $132,291 to $118,943,

Real Estate Transfers | 4B a better than 10 percent decrease. There are many factors in those numbers, including the increased number of foreclosures compared to last year. "Sales in the lower price range could be a result of the tax stimulus for home buyers," Partin said. "Anyone thinking of buying should talk to a Realtor or mortgage lender and ask about the buyer tax stimulus program. “This is not to say that we are out of the woods by any means,” Says Jonathan Hall, President of the Ohio Association of Realtors, adding, “however, we are at least seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.” The Firelands area was one of only 12 Ohio markets to show positive sales, trailing only Holmes County and West Central Ohio, which were showing more than 20 percent increases in the number of units sold. "The real estate market seems to be headed upward, however it is far from recovered. It is truly a very good time to buy," Partin.

Playmakers taking it to state

Matt Parker as Gunner (left), Monette Garn as Clara, Jacklyn Kromer as Bernice and Jeff Bugby as Kanute practice a scene from “Don’t Hug Me” at Playmakers Civic Theatre Tuesday night. The actors will take the show on the road this weekend when they perform at Ohio Community Theatre Association’s state competition. The group — along with Rich Riedmaier, who plays Aarvid, and director Brenda and Bou-Sliman — won the district competition in June with a 30-minute excerpt from the show performed for local audiences in March. This is the first time in 25 years a group from Playmakers has made it to the state level. Two groups were chosen to represent the Northwest region at the competition. Harlequins in Sandusky will perform its show “Ravenscroft.”

'I Can Help Lake Erie' TOLEDO — During the 2009 Coastweeks observance, Ohioans will focus on the preservation and protection of Lake Erie and its watershed through a variety of cleanup events along the shoreline and throughout its watershed. Many clean-ups are scheduled for International Coastal Clean-Up Day, Sept. 19, when people around the world will remove trash and debris to promote waterway health and improve the natural beauty of the shoreline. Coastweeks is a celebration of Lake Erie’s diverse coastal region and the cultural and economic resources that contribute to the quality of life and vitality of the region. Lake Erie has influenced the growth of Ohio through productive agricultural lands, industries, international harbors and as a recreational destination. This year, Coastweeks focuses on the theme, “I Can Help Lake Erie.” The program encourages people to give back by recognizing and advocating resource protection while balancing economic, cultural and environmental interests. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission coordinates

Dear Editor, On behalf of the Port Clinton Artists’ Club, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the many people who traveled from near and far to participate in and support the 52nd Arts in the Park, held Aug. 1-2 at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. Many thanks to the Beacon — John, Mary Alice, Angie — for extraordinary coverage. The power of the press, great weather and exceptional art, drove record crowds both days to the largest art event in Ottawa County. Special thanks to Jerry’s Auto Plaza for letting us borrow a golf cart on short notice, Kroger for giving us trash boxes and ACE Hardware for sharing their parking lot. Our volunteer entertainers received an abundance of compliments. They were singer Dave Ninke, saxophone player Dave Miller and our roaming Barbershop Quartet featuring Jason Barton-Kashmer, Tom Evans, Paul Rothschild and Ted Williams. We also appreciate the judges who shared their expertise by reviewing all booths and choosing Best of Show, which was a tie for John Hammond, photographer, and Barbara Wismar, tile maker. The judges were Irene Finck, Gil Gonzalez, Jodie McCallum, Barbara Radebaugh and Rona Rothschild. People’s Choice winner was wood artist Greg Johns from Fremont. Please join us next year for another celebration of art on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7-8, 2010. Barbara Radebaugh 2009 Arts in the Park Chair Dear Ottawa County Community, On Aug. 15, we held the Gem Beach Rocks … Again event to benefit the United Way in Ottawa County. We are proud to report with the support and generosity of so many of you throughout this community, the event was a resounding success contributing more than $50,000 to the annual fundraising campaign. We would like to thank our committee for giving generously of their time and talents. The committee members are Amy Below, Joan and Jeff Bryden, Kim Godfrey, Jan Hackett, Debi Hahn, Tom Halsey, Amy Heflinger, Ed and Rose Markel, Jackie Mayer, Carrie McGlothlin, Lisa Molnar, Greg Peiffer, Joy Riedl and John Schaffner.

We would like to thank the more than 200 volunteers who assisted the committee the day of the event to insure everything ran smoothly. The volunteers were energetic, friendly and willing to do whatever they were asked to make the event a success. We would like to extend a special thank you to our major sponsors: FriendShip Food Stores, Croghan Colonial Bank, Gem Beach Marina, Terra Community College, aha Creative, Always Genuine Events, The Beacon/Minuteman Press, Continental Airlines, generousgems.com, Jimmy Catawba, Logo to a Tee, Marathon Petroleum Company LLC, Arby’s, CTM Media, Drew’s Carts, Fellhauer Mechanical Systems, Kalahari Resorts, Magruder Hospital, Meaden & Moore, Mid-America Boating, NOMS, Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community, Tom Halsey, Winke’s Boat Storage and WPCR Port Clinton Radio. Guests at the event enjoyed a day of great music, great weather and great memories with family and friends while supporting this great cause. Thank you everyone who supported and attended our event and most importantly demonstrated how we Live United in Ottawa County. Steve Lovitt, Megan Lovitt Co-chairs, 2009 United Way Campaign Dear Editor, In answer to Louis Ball’s questions in the Aug. 27 Beacon, for the past 13 years I have gone to any doctor in any state and to any hospital in the country for my medical care. Presently I see a local family practitioner and a Sandusky dermatologist whenever I need to. I have blood tests, mammograms and whatever tests my doctor orders at Magruder Hospital. While in Florida last winter I saw a doctor in Bradenton and was treated there. In the future, I hope to continue with my government coverage. It is called Medicare. My medical plan allows me to go to any doctor and any hospital in the country. My fervent wish is that all Americans might have as good medical coverge as I do. Every other advanced nation in the world sees providing medical care to all its citizens as a moral right. Why the people of the richest country on earthy do not see it the same way is beyond my comprehension. Nancy Beadle, Marblehead

No fish is accepted by Foley's MUSSELS! "FRESH" until carefully scrutinized for quality and freshness. ALL NATURAL SEA SCALLOPS Foley customers are guaranteed exceptional flavor because of Foley research into the 'vineyards' of the sea. Hundreds of taste tests have taught us that fish GEORGE'S WHILE of the same species can vary tremendously in flavor depending on the fishing grounds from which they are harvested. To use an analogy to wine, the flavor BANK SUPPLIES distinction is predicated on the fishing grounds (vineyard) that are unique because of the nutrients, the quality of the water and the amount of sunlight. Thursday, September 3, 2009   I   The Beacon

Beacon Bits Is seems to me that there has never been a year when the wild carrot, also called Queen Anne’s lace, has been so abundant. I’ve picked BY VIRGINIA PARK several bouquets of it and usually had it in the living room to enjoy — sometimes mixed with cosmos. That makes a beautiful, air-y floral arrangement and it really lightens up a room. “Laceâ€? is beautiful outside, too, especially along the roadsides. I’d like to get some of it to grow as the backdrop in a flower bed. It would really frame, nicely, groupings of low growing, colorful flowers. ——— The first monarch butterfly I’ve seen this season was on a “butterfly bushâ€? in my front yard. That was on Saturday. There was only one butterfly though, so I hope to see more of them soon. ‘Tis the season. And it’s also the season, or soon will be, for the temperatures to start cooling off. I really hate it when the weather is hot and humid. But this year we haven’t had much of those conditions. Last Sunday night I happened to see woods off to the east just as the sun was dropping toward sunset. Light from the sun illuminated only the tops of the trees and I was surprised to see there was some very light autumn coloring in the foliage. It hardly seems possible, but it signifies that another season’s change is at hand. (And the sky later that night looked like an “autumn skyâ€?, too.) ——— I went to an auction Saturday where the household goods of Sylvia Kimball were being sold. Sylvia is going to down-size from a full house to an apartment and she wanted to get rid of an accumulation of many possessions. Chad Brough was the auctioneer. I enjoyed the show and I got a few bargains, too, including a snow shovel to carry in my car. There were sales goods in the front yard, back yard, garage and tool shed. It was surprising how many articles a person gathers over a lifetime. I thought I would buy a few things and I did. But it turned out that what I wanted — and what I actually purchased — were completely different things. ——— The good stuff is coming on in the garden now. Tomatoes and cucumbers and green peppers and zucchini squash are among my favorites. You really have to watch those zucchini. You look at them on the plant, they are 4 or 5 inches long and skinny, you turn your back, look again and they are as big as a small submarine! Well, that might be a slight exaggeration. But they do grow fast and I like the small ones best. My favorite zucchini recipe is a modified ratatouille. It’s easy and everything goes in one skillet. Cut about Âź pound bacon into slices and fry it. Peel about 3 tomatoes and one big onion. Chop them coarsely and toss it in the skillet with the bacon and bacon grease. Slice two small, unpeeled zucchini squash in 1-inch slices and put in the skillet. Optional ingredient: some diced pepper — green, red, orange, whatever. Cook until the vegetables are done. You can hurry the process by adding a tight-fitting lid to the skillet. This is delicious (and inexpensive) as a main dish. Or serve it as a side dish to accompany a meal. Oh, yes. I forgot. Don’t use a cast-iron skillet. I did once and didn’t like the flavor. ——— Does anyone have a used laptop computer or one of those notebook computers to sell? I’d like one for a specific use I’ve encountered. I’m also looking for a gently used big recliner chair and I don’t care about what color it is so long

as it’s clean. Leave a message at 419-734-2753 or ginny@ nwonline.net if you have either of these articles to sell. ——— If you haven’t visited the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Mich., lately, now would be a good time to make the trip. Friends of mine went recently and reported that they were tremendously impressed with the exhibits and educational opportunities for their children. They said there is one must-see exhibit called “With Liberty and Justice for All. It explores the proud and often painful evolution of American freedom: !UTO (OME ,IFE -ORE from the Revolutionary War through the struggle for civil rights. &OR A POLICY THAT lTS YOUR BUDGET AND LIFE Included in the exhibit is the chair President Abraham Lincoln was sitting in during the production of “Our CONTACT A !!! )NSURANCE !GENT American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre when he was assassinated on April 14, 1865. An original camp bed used by the first president, George Washington, is also on display. Restored and exhibited at the museum is the bus in which Rosa Parks helped inaugurate the civil rights movement on Dec. 1, 1955. Visitors can even board the bus and sit in " % (ARBOR 2D the seat where Parks made history as you listen to accounts of her ordeal. 0ORT #LINTON /( “Heroes of the Sky: Adventures in Early Flight is an other important exhibit. From it you will be inspired by people’s stories from the first forty years in aviation. There is a Wright Flyer Replica, a 1939 Sikorsky VS300A Helicopter and a 1939 Douglas DC-3. A 1928 Ford Trimotor is also on display. It was the plane that Admiral Byrd flew over the WWW !!! COM South Pole — and was the first plane to do so. People from around the Port Clinton and Gypsum area would really like to see that because the Ford Tri-Motors have such a large part in local history. A stroll through Greenfield Village brings you to the “Porches and Parlors District where you can see the homes of Robert Frost and Noah Webster, as well as the Thomas Edison Homestead to name a few. The “Main Street District features the home of the Wright brothers from 1870 New M em to bers O nly Direct access Lake & Bay to 1913 and the Wright CyModern Showers & Restrooms cle shop where they worked on bicycles to help pay for 30/50 Amp Service/City Water their aviation experiments. Private Gas Dock & Pump Outs The home and shop were moved to the village from 24 Hour Guarded Security Gate Dayton. * * * * These are just a few of the many things to see at Beach Memberships the Henry Ford Museum. There will be an Old Car Seasonal Campground Lots Festival Sept. 12-13 in Greenfield Village. And if Public 9-Hole Par-3 Golf Course you visit the museum before Sept. 7, you can see the Rock Stars’ Cars & Guitars exhibit featuring more than 20 eye-popping cars and 50 iconic guitars from rock’s greatest legends. Around Ottawa County Riverview residents enjoy picnic in the park Residents of Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus enjoyed a cool Lake Erie breeze during a picnic lunch at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. Residents took in the view while enjoying an appetizer of barbecue or sour cream and onion chips, followed by cold cut sandwiches topped off with home-grown tomatoes from activity assistant Tina Fleming’s garden and homemade pasta salad. The meal was followed with a dessert of fresh honeydew melon and chocolate chip cookies. The activity bus took the scenic route back to the facility through the Catawba Point and along the Marblehead peninsula.

“God gave us the perfect weather for a beautiful picnic,” said resident Alice Novak. Ottawa County-owned Riverview Healthcare Campus is located in Oak Harbor.

Trinity United Methodist Church celebrates 50 years of open-air church In the summer of 1959, Trinity United Methodist Church began early morning worship services at the Ottawa Drive-In Theatre on Ohio 163 as a way of reaching the hundreds of vacationers and seasonal residents away from home during the summer months. This ministry is still going strong but since the theater no longer exists, outdoor worship is now at 8 a.m. at the Mon Ami Historic Restaurant and Winery, on Ohio 53 just north of

Ohio 163. Outdoor ushers guide the cars into lines of parking places, with vans and larger vehicles moved to the back row. In place of the farm wagon from years ago, Trinity Church now uses an all-weather customized vehicle with Plexiglas windows, a pulpit, keyboard and sound system. An FM transmitter sends the sound through car speakers; there are also loudspeakers on the top of the wagon to send out sound to those riding in on motorcycles or bi-

cycles. On Sunday, Sept. 6, there will be a special commemoration of this ministry, including donuts, rolls and coffee served outside by the chalet at 7:30 a.m., followed by morning worship (including communion) at 8 a.m. The community is invited to this celebration. The 2009 season of Open Air Worship will conclude on Sept. 20, with the 2010 season beginning Memorial Day weekend, May 30.

Football Roundup By J. Patrick Eaken

OAK HARBOR 14 — SPRINGFIELD 0 Oak Harbor traveled into Northern Lakes League country and opened the season by spoiling Springfield High School’s debut of its new football field. On the new field turf in Holland, Oak Harbor scored two first half touchdowns in rolling to a 14-0 victory in the rain over the Blue Devils. “The Springfield game was a big win for us,” Oak Harbor second-year coach Mike May said. “Our kids worked very hard during the off-season and they came out and played hard Friday night. I was real proud of the leadership of our seniors and the way our kids handled adversity during the game. The key for us is to keep improving every day.” The Rocket defense accounted for four interceptions in holding the Blue Devil offense out of the end zone. Jake Scott had two interceptions, returning them for 25 and 11 yards, and Brad Perry had the other two, returning them for 42 and 10 yards. On the wet field turf, three fumbles were lost, including two by Oak Harbor and one by Springfield. Oak Harbor opened the scoring on a two yard run by Matt Klippstein with 1:28 remaining in the first quarter, and Myles Backus provided the point after conversion kick. Just a few minutes later, the Rockets scored again as Zack Priesman caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from veteran quarterback Steve Young. With 10:37 remaining in the first half, Backus provided the PAT kick and Oak Harbor had a 14-0 lead. The second half was a scoreboard stalemate for both teams, but it was enough for the Rocket defense to earn the shutout in its season opener. Oak Harbor had 191 total net yards to Springfield’s 184. The Rockets had 128 yards rushing and 63 passing, while Springfield had 104 rushing and 80 passing. Oak Harbor had 14 first downs to Springfield’s 11. Klippstein led Oak Harbor running backs with 66 yards on 17 carries and Scott had 43 yards on 12 carries. For Springfield, Leroy Alexander ran for 83 yards on eight carries and Alex Grogg had 63 yards on 13 carries. Blue Devil quarterback Dirk Ruckman completed 5-of-19 passes for 77 yards, but with the four interceptions. Three of Ruckman’s passes were completed to Glandoy Hill for 48 yards, including one that covered 33 yards. Young completed 7-of-13 passes for 63 yards, including a 12-yard completion to Priesman, an 11-yard completion to Klippstein, and a nine-yard completion to D.J. Everett. Preisman caught four passes for 33 yards and Klippstein caught two for 21 yards. The Rockets host Ottawa County rival Genoa this Friday in the annual Celestial Bowl, kick-off at 7:30 p.m. The Comets routed the Rossford Bulldogs in their season opener, 60-0.

PORT CLINTON 34, WOODMORE 26 The Port Clinton Redskins had about as much excitement as they needed in defeating the host Woodmore Wildcats in the season opener, 34-26. “We scored twice late,” Coach Toby Hammond said. “We scored a touchdown and were down by a point, so we went for two and made it. They got the ball and in another couple plays they threw an interception, and we were able to put another score up so we were up by eight with about two minutes to go.” The first touchdown came when quarterback Derek Colston threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Redskin receiver Eric Reynolds. Jason Faust ran the two-point conversion Hammond was talking about. After the Redskin interception by Allen Tigner, Richard Harris ran one yard into the end zone to put PC up for good. Harris also had a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Hammond said Harris also had a second half interception on defense. It was a game where Hammond said “a little bit of everything” went right for the Redskins. “(Quarterback) Derek Colston threw three touchdown passes and no interceptions, so that was big,” Hammond said. Colston threw two of his touchdown passes as the Redskins scored the first two touchdowns of the game -

one for three yards and the other for 25 yards. Up 13-0 in the second quarter, Woodmore came back to take a 19-13 halftime lead. Harris ran for his first touchdown to open the second half, tying the game at 19. Woodmore scored on a fiveyard run by Pierce Fonseca with just over three minutes remaining, and that set up PC’s last minute fireworks that sent them into the victory column. For PC, Colston completed 14-of-29 passes for 130 yards. Nine were caught by Tigner for 85 yards, and two each by Eric Reynolds and Josh Graves. Harris ran for 42 yards on 13 carries, and Steven Pastor ran for 34 yards on 14 carries. PC was outgained in total yads 237 to 216, and Woodmore had 17 first downs to PC’s 14.

Danbury Auction House now open for business

by angie adair

Second-Hand Jim’s has given life to a second business: the Danbury Auction House. The former consignment shop — still open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. Sundays and by appointment — is now the site for monthly auctions featuring items from furniture and artwork to knickknacks and, well, pretty much anything. Owner and Catawba resident Jim Foard said the change from store to auction Jim Foard house was because of a few factors. “I had a great time and a great run. Economics has something to do with it. Closing in the winter has something to do with it,” he said. And according

Marblehead Bank offers marketing Special Excursion opportunity to area businesses Submitted by Marblehead Bank The Ottawa County Historical Society is taking advantage of a new program at Marblehead Bank to tell visitors the story of the Marblehead peninsula. The group will have a display in the lobby of the peninsula branch, located on Bridge Road, during regular business hours throughout the month. Stop in and learn about the history of Danbury and Marblehead and ear-

ly residents and founders of the area — Benajah and Rachel Wolcott, the first keeper of the Marblehead Lighthouse; and William Kelly who built the Marblehead Lighthouse and the Keeper’s House. The Marblehead Bank has established this opportunity for area businesses to positively promote their business by designing a display at the facilities of the Bank’s Peninsula Branch.

The display space will be limited to approximately 5 feet wide by 3 feet deep by 7 feet tall. Access to the display will be during normal business hours. Area business owners may contact Andrea Moore or Sherila Carr at the Peninsula Branch for further details of the program and to reserve a time slot for their display. There is no charge to the business for this marketing opportunity.

WSOS enrolling now for preschool Area families can find quality childcare and preschool services now for the new school year at any WSOS Child Development Center. Currently, the WSOS Head Start/ Early Childhood Development Program is enrolling income-eligible children birth to 5 years old. In Ottawa County, centers are located in Port Clinton and Genoa. Other children are served through the home-based program where a teacher visits the child in the home. The service provided at WSOS is a comprehensive early childhood and family program. It provides children with age-appropriate educational services in addition to health and nutrition services. Social services for the entire family are also provided. Options for families include fulland half-day classes for the child and/or home visitation services. Eligible families are those whose total annual income does not exceed 100 percent of the federal poverty guidelines ($22,050 for a family of four) for Early Head Start/Head Start and 200 percent for public school preschool. Children with special needs are also eligible for these services. Please call to verify the income levels. All but two of the WSOS Child Development Centers around the WSOS four-county service area have been designated as Step Up to Quality award centers. Port Clinton and Genoa centers both earned Two-Star Step Up to Quality awards. These awards are conferred on a center by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Bureau of Childcare and Development. If your family could benefit from the WSOS Head Start/Early Childhood Development Program or you know a family that would, call WSOS at 1-800-775-9767 or visit the Web site at www.wsos.org

The Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at the B-C-S board office Aug. 25. Curriculum coordinator Andrea Smith presented the 2008-2009 state report card results for the district and individual schools. B-C-S achieved 26 out of 30 indicators for an overall “effective” rating. Both the middle school and Rocky Ridge Elementary improved from “effective” to “excellent” ratings. The high school achieved an “excellent” rating again this year, and Carroll, R.C. Waters and Graytown Elementary Schools each maintained an “effective” rating. The district met the criteria for Adequate Yearly Progress and was rated “above expected growth” on the Value Added Measure. All individual schools met AYP, except R.C. Waters, which will implement a detailed improvement plan to ensure the school will meet AYP in 2009-2010. Smith explained that B-C-S is constantly working to align curriculum with the state model and to improve teaching methodologies, which should continue to drive state report card results upward. Smith also reported that University of Toledo professor Judy Lambert is conducting a research project involving B-C-S fourth-grade elementary

teachers and students. Lambert will study the correlation between student achievement and the daily use of wireless mini-computers in the classroom. Lambert is also providing training and mentorship to the fourth-grade teachers on effective use of computer technology.
