A local couple, Tara and Todd Riggs of Port Clinton, have become involved with the Claddagh Farm Horse Rescue operated by Megan Print and Cliff Crowl, both of whom served in Iraq. They presently have more than 25 horses that they must care for and feed. SoundOff Dear Editor: Recently, I attended the “Mad as Hell Doctorsâ€? rally held at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. Though the weather was cold and windy for the first time in a while there was still a decent turnout of roughly 90 or so people. I do have to applaud these doctors for going out of their way to promote what they feel should be the health care plan in practice in the U.S. This being the single-payer plan that everyone would be required to pay into and would abolish private health insurance companies. Though I respect these gentlemen for their courage, they did not make much of a case for universal health care and to me only reinforced my belief that any government involvement in the health care industry is disastrous. When you boil it down, the two main things that they were mad about were the fact that health insurance companies are profitable and that these “special interestsâ€? control the ear, and ultimately the actions, of Congress. In fact, their disapproval of the federal government’s role in health care was pretty apparent. The disdain these doctors had for anyone making a profit didn’t surprise me, it’s a central point in the economic philosophy that promotes the government control of an industry, what did surprise me was that they went to long lengths to point out that our own government was to blame for our current health care mess. Why then would they promote a single-payer health care plan that could only be run and regulated by the government? Nor did they address the problem of funding such a program in the future when there are more people in retirement than there are working. The credibility of these “Madâ€? doctors then lessened when they never pointed out any specifics about single-payer, also when one doctor stated that they didn’t know much about the insurance side of the health industry I had to chuckle just a little. But the clincher was when yet another of these doctors stated that “80 percent of physicians support single-payer.â€? I have trouble believing that statistic. Maybe I only know or have talked to the 20 percent that are against it. I would recommend that anyone who has any interest in this debate talk to their family physician or any other local MDs and seek their opinion on the matter. The event concluded with a few medical testimonies from the crowd. One that stood out to me was a young woman with two little girls. She stated that she was mad because her insurance provider would not cover fertility drugs for her when she wanted to have children. I have sympathy for her and her husband and I’m glad that they were blessed with children but I would not consider fertility drugs as a medical necessity to be paid for by the population as a whole. At that point I considered passing around the collection hat and asking for money to pay for the labor and delivery costs for own 2 ½ -monthold daughter. I thought “if ever there were a time and a place for that, surely these of all people would be willing dig into their wallets and donate some of their hard earned money.â€? Of course, I would never ask for such a thing because it MY responsibility and no one else’s. I don’t expect these traveling physicians to understand that since one of them actually mocked the idea of individual responsibility in his opening statements. I might be old fashioned but if we are to prosper as a society we cannot forget that collective responsibility can never exist without individual responsibility. Bert N. Fall
Dear Editor, On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Port Clinton voters have the opportunity to do something special for themselves and their community. It is to vote yes for the Library Operating Levy. Ida Rupp Public Library, which has served our community for 101 years, is truly a community treasure. Where else can the citizens of our area have a place to borrow books and DVDs, read magazines and newspapers, attend programs for all age groups, use computers with internet service, attend community meetings, do genealogical research, and view films on Friday evenings? There is a wealth of information and entertainment found in this one special place. In the past the state has paid for 95 percent of the library’s expenses, but state funding has been drastically reduced already, and our library has already made cuts. Ida Rupp must rely on community members to vote yes to restore all services and return laid-off staff so that our library will remain a community treasure. The cost to a homeowner of an appraised $100,000 home would be less than $3 per month, which is about the cost of an average monthly magazine. Certainly, all of us can afford such a small amount and yet reap such great rewards. Please vote yes for the library operating levy. Marlene Gulas President of Friends of the Library Dear Editor: After a year’s absence, the Port Clinton Area Harvest Festival returned this year and was, by all measures, a resounding success. It was the product of hard work by a relatively small number of volunteers. As important as the volunteers were, it wouldn’t have been possible without the generous contributions, both monetarily and in services of numerous supporters. Without the help of some individuals listed below we would not have had a Harvest Festival and sincerely hope that they will help us again in 2010. We would like to recognize and thank each of the following whose generosity helped make this years festival a success. Thank you also to the following — without them there wouldn’t have been a festival: Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 2295, Community Markets, Toft Dairy, Fellhauer In Focus, Key Bank, Baumann Auto, Zink Calls, Dupp’s Printing, Our Guest Inn, Rent a Center, OK Rental, Island House, Huntington Bank, Kroger, Slater’s Pub, Craig Carr, BudweiserMaple City Ice, Aimee Slater, Port Clinton Fisheries, Shore Side Pizza, city of Port Clinton administration, city of Port Clinton Parks & Rec, city of Port Clinton Street Department, Port Clinton High School student volunteers and the Ottawa County Sheriff ’s Office. Beacon Bits BY VIRGINIA PARK
A few weeks ago I wrote about a Monarch butterfly in this column. I saw it near my butterfly bush at the mailbox. He was a beautiful specimen and I had watched with great pleasure as he flitted from flower to flower. A few days after the column appeared in this newspaper, the folks at the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District sent to me a clear plastic case with a plastic drinking

cup set in the bottom of it. There was dirt in the cup and a ragged-stemmed plant was growing in it. I couldn’t figure out why they had sent this weird gift to me. But then I was told by the person who had delivered the case that it contained cocoons of two Monarch butterflies. (These were in the pupa stage.) Sure enough, when I examined it more closely, I saw that there were two green things, each about an inch long and maybe three-eighths inch in diameter, hanging from the inside of the lid of the plastic case. I was told to watch them, and when the butterflies made their way out of the cocoons, that I should release them. This happened on Sept. 22. I had placed the case on the front porch, thinking that the light out there would be good for it. When I went out that afternoon to take a look, two beautiful monarch butterflies had “hatched. I carried the case carefully out to near the butterfly bush, thinking that the butterflies would enjoy being there. I opened the top of the case and one of the butterflies immediately escaped and took off flying to the east. There was a breeze from the west so maybe the butterfly was riding that. I don’t know. Maybe he just wanted to go east. Whatever the reason, the butterfly flew beautifully eastward and upwards, climbing ever higher until he was out of sight. Then I turned my attention to the other butterfly in the case. That one seemed not to be very interested in moving so I reached in and carefully removed the plastic cup with the plant in it without touching the butterfly. With more space at hand, the butterfly flexed its wings, and left the case. Both butterflies, right from the first instant that they took flight, seemed to have extreme confidence and ability to fly. The second butterfly lofted off to the east, wings beating miraculously, just as the first had done, and climbing and climbing until it, too, he was out of sight. What a spectacular view it was. I wish that I could have watched them longer. But I also had an overwhelming sense of providing them their freedom so that was an uplifting emotion, too. I know that Monarch butterflies can fly very long distances. They migrate thousands of miles. But somehow, I had never thought of them as being high fliers, I’d always thought of them as staying close to the ground. That wasn’t the case. Once freed, they took off for the heights. Later, I looked them up on the Internet. Monarchs are interesting creatures with a relatively short life span. They feed on milkweed, which is poisonous to many other creatures. That makes the Monarch butterfly poisonous to many predators. Monarchs are among the few bugs that can make a transatlantic flight. Imagine that! The weather and wind conditions have to be just right, but Monarch butterflies have been traced going from islands near our continent to England. I also learned on the Internet that some people grow specific kinds of milkweed in order to attract certain Monarch butterflies. I can’t describe how much pleasure I got from this interesting experiment in growing Monarch butterflies. It was really a neat display of part of the life cycle of one of nature’s spectacular creatures and I loved it. ——— Here is one more item about “bugs. Lately I have complained in this column about having a lot of fruit flies in my kitchen this summer. Two people gave me a remedy that I’m going to try. Here it is. Put a little

with John Schaffner A Message From SPANGLER MOTOR SALES, Oak Harbor, Ohio.
To all our friends and customers,
" By now, we're sure you are aware of the fact that Chrysler Motors LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, by doing this it has allowed them to trim the dealers in the U.S. eliminating close to 800 Chrysler dealerships in this country. We were one of the 800 dealerships to be eliminated. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of customers we have had the pleasure to serve over the past 49 years. Over the last couple of years the down turn in our industry has been extremely difficult for all of us. We realize this has forced some of our customers to purchase their Chrysler or other brand vehicle in most cases out of Oak Harbor, for this we apologize and certainly share in your frustrations. But, “WE ARE HERE TO STAY! Spangler Motor Sales has been one of Northwest Ohio's oldest family owned and operated Chrysler dealerships since 1960 and we have “NO intentions of closing our doors. True, we cannot sell new Chrysler brand vehicles, but we still can and have been providing the same quality service to all our customers, and warranty work has not been an issue. As for the sale of vehicles we are providing the highest quality preowned vehicles available to our customers. Many of our vehicles are CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED, all vehicles are inspected in our shop before they leave our lot and come with one of the BEST WARRANTIES in the industry. We are still the same company you have grown to know and trust since 1960 and as we many times say, “NOT THE BIGGEST, JUST THE BEST! Spanglersales@cros.net -** /&&

bit of cider vinegar in a small bowl and add just a drop of dishwashing liquid. Both people who shared this said that the fruit flies are attracted to the cider smell and are killed when they drink the fluid containing the dish soap. I’m going to try it because I’d really like to get rid of these pesky fruit flies permanently. ——— It looks as if the Island House Hotel, in downtown Port Clinton, is getting a new roof on the overhang near the front and side doors. I wondered what was going on there when I saw the workers early last week. Then Jack Lano and I went there for lunch on Wednesday and saw what they were doing. Jack, always an interesting conversationalist, is here in his hometown from his present home in Southern California and is visiting friends and relatives. We usually go to lunch and catch up on each others’ news when he visits Ohio. This time we talked about some of his younger years working at US Gypsum Co. before he joined the Marines and went off to World War II. We also talked about his life after the war, his marriage, college career at Ohio State University and his subsequent career. After that, Jack, his wife and two sons lived all over the country as he pursued his career. Jack is a world champion weightlifter and has won many awards and medals in the pursuit of this sport. Although we didn’t talk about it this time, the last I knew he was still competing in age-appropriate weight-lifting competitions. ——— On Thursday, the big white tent went up downtown to accommodate visitors to the weekend’s Harvest Festival. It looked like rain would be coming our way, but tonight, Thursday, the rain hasn’t arrived yet. We surely do need it though. My lawn is dry, dry, dry and is beginning to look pretty bad. ——— I just received a nice note from Susan Keefer. She wrote that Rev. Tony Fadely, with his wife Vera, had had a great time on their visit to Port Clinton. I think he was here for a PCHS class reunion. Anyway, he had a memorable time as he renewed many friendships. The congregation at Chapel on the Lake hosted him for preaching and teaching while he was here. Unfortunately, Fadely suffered a slight stroke, upon his return to Cocoa, Fla. He is going to be all right though. His speech was somewhat affected, but the recovery is coming along nicely. If you want to write to him his address is: Whole Loaf Worship Center, 806 Forest Ave., Cocoa, FL 32922. His phone number is 321-305-6906. If you want to talk to Susan Keefer about Fadely’s current life and ministry, call her at 419-656-5503. She keeps in touch with him regularly. ——— Now I am writing on early Monday morning. There was thunder and lightning overnight, but I don’t know if we had any rain. It is still dark, and I haven’t been able to look outside yet to see if the ground is damp. Heavy rains are forecast for today and I hope that forecast materializes. ——— I talked to some folks who went to the Ohio State game in Columbus on Saturday. They said that there were torrential rains there. Some of the spectators in the stadium remained completely dry, while others, depending on where they were seated, were drenched. Actually, I don’t know whether the Buckeyes won or lost. I was so busily asking about the weather that I forgot to ask the score of the game. ——— If you are interested in continuing education, consult the Kern Center catalog of courses being offered this fall. Lots of interesting topics will be offered.
REUNION from 1A teacher Tom Maher, DECA sent its entire class to the state competition. This was a feat never achieved by any other PCHS DECA Chapter. That started the PCHS DECA Dynasty. Throughout the next two decades, the school consistently won state and national titles. More than 20 DECA alumni came back to be a part of the festivities.
PCHS Alumni Brunch
On Saturday, PCHS Alumni gathered at Port Clinton Yacht Club for a brunch and entertainment. Alumni Association President Bo Loeffler welcomed PCHS alumni and guests. Ralph Moore, PCHS principal, highlighted PCHS academic achievements. Guests enjoyed entertainment provided by the PCHS Vocal Chamber Ensemble, Touch of Class with the PCHS Alma Mater as their finale. Music was provided by talented PCHS student Jon Koch during the
meal prepared by Second Street Diner. The earliest graduate in attendance was Mary Alice Streeter, Class of 1939; Ted Wierzba was the most recent graduate (1994), and Barb Malik Keys was honored as the alumnus who traveled the farthest ‌ from Alaska.
Alumni Rock Kokomo Bay
Hundreds of alumni rocked Kokomo Bay, unofficial count was 239. They enjoyed food and friends while listening to the music of various talented PCHS alumni: piano player, Steve Muncey (1979), singer/songer writer and guitarist Jerry Davenport (’70), guitar “crooner extraordinaire John “Crash Davenport (’68) and the garage band Low Expectations, featuring PCHS alumni Molly (Loeffler) Mack (’79), John Schaffner (’67); Mike Reichman (’97); Bob Hille (’69), Bo Loeffler (’75) and David Bodie (’90). Later, they entered the streets of downtown Port Clinton to enjoy all the Port Clinton Harvest Festival had to offer.

DayBreak group spends a day at the zoo DayBreak, Ottawa County’s only Adult Day Service, was proud to take part in the Toledo Zoo’s Senior Safari Day on Sept. 22. The Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio coordinates this special day to give seniors citizens their own special day to tour the zoo. Six DayBreak clients, two community volunteers and three staff members enjoyed their day at the Zoo free of charge. The animals were active and playful throughout the zoo. The garden was in full bloom with rose brushes and other colorful flowers perfuming the area and attracting a few busy bees as well. The favorite stop of the day was with the orangutans; they played and interacted with the clients through the glass, which brought many smiles. “This trip allows the clients to experience the zoo, in a day especially designed for them. This is something many of the DayBreak clients would not have the opportunity to experience without this day trip, said Social Service Director Meleny Bonnell. DayBreak is celebrating its third year of service to Ottawa County and its residents. The program has quickly grown from its first client and is now serving 16 families. DayBreak continue to strive to offer Ottawa County residents with a much-needed service for those that wish to live at home as long as possible. The program is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is located in Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus. The program accepts a wide range of clients whose needs are as different as the individuals
themselves. The program also provides family caregivers a break and peace of mind. Many clients come to the program for socialization as an alterative to be home alone. DayBreak invites anyone 60 years of age or older to come and enjoy socialization and group activities in our cozy homelike atmosphere. Contact DayBreak coordinator Suzanne Witte, LPN, at 419-898-2851, ext. 208.

OLEC honors Lake Erie advocates TOLEDO — The Ohio Lake Erie Commission has announced the winners of the 2009 Ohio Lake Erie Awards, which annually recognizes an individual and an organization that have made outstanding contributions to enhance Ohio’s Great Lake. Fred Snyder, from Fremont, whose career and life have been dedicated to the betterment of Lake Erie through educational programs, research and teaching, received this year’s Lake Erie Award. Snyder, who recently retired from the Ohio Sea Grant Program where he served as an Extension Specialist with OSU/Ohio Sea Grant College Program, was the first Ohio Sea Grant Extension Agent for the state. He has served as District Sea Grant Extension Specialist for western Lake Erie since 1978 and has been the program co-coordinator since 1998. Snyder grew up in the fishing tackle/bait business in West Liberty. He conducted the first Ohio Charter Captain’s Conference in 1981 and has helped it grow to become the largest in the nation. Sny-
der’s marine advisory efforts have focused on the fishing industry development, exotic species in the Great Lakes, water quality improvement, tourism and coastal business development. Ducks Unlimited received the 2009 Lake Erie Award for its wetland conservation efforts in Ohio, which have protected more than 6,500 acres in the Lake Erie Watershed since 1985. DU has restored more than 21,000 acres of wetlands statewide and has consistently provided leadership, science-based solutions, partnership-building and funding to implement on-the-ground wetland conservation throughout Ohio and the Lake Erie Watershed. DU Director for Public Policy Gildo Tori and Manager of Conservation Programs Roy Kroll accepted the award on the organization’s behalf. Winners were announced at the Commission’s annual meeting on Sept. 28 at the University of Toledo’s Lake Erie Center.

Lube, Oil, Filter & Tire Rotation $19.88 Chassis Lubricate, includes up to 5 qts. The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District conducted a rain garden seminar last week in the picturesque Shedel Gardens. PHOTO BY ANGIE ADAIR
Rain gardens, rain barrels and native plants at Schedel Gardens Local residents, Master Gardeners and Ohio EPA gathered together in Elmore at the beautiful Schedel Arboretum and Gardens on Sept. 22 to learn how to make their own rain gardens. Rain gardens are functional landscapes designed to filter polluted runoff. Crystal Dymond, with Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, explained that as the water runs over the land it could pick up pollutants such as oils, greases and heavy metals and deposit them in larger bodies of water such as Lake Erie. One way you can help treat the water and reduce flooding is to build a rain garden that will allow the water to gather in a sunken landscape and filter the water into the ground instead of running off the land and polluting our water. Rain Gardens can be installed in many locations including: low laying areas in your yard, next to downspouts or between neighbor’s drainage paths to reduce problems areas. They are designed to filter into the ground within 12 to 48 hours so mosquitoes are not a concern since they won’t have enough time for their eggs to hatch. Mike Libben, with Ottawa SWCD, demonstrated how to construct rain barrels, which were later given away as door prizes to Sandy Zenser and Sue Dymond. Mike explained that homeowners could save money by using rain barrels to collect rain water off rooftops to water landscapes instead of using treated tap water. Residents can purchase rain barrels at the Ottawa SWCD for $60. Tricia Tallman and Pat Tebbe with Ohio EPA won rain garden starter kit door prizes provided by Jan Hunter with Naturally Native Nursery. Jan presented a variety of native plants and expressed the importance of using natives, which provides low maintenance, reduced watering needs due to deeper root depths and the reduced use of chemicals since our native plants have adapted to our local conditions and insects. The workshop ended with a visit to the scenic Schedel Arboretum and Gardens for a fun and relaxing evening. For information, contact Ottawa Soil & Water Conservation District at 419-898-1595.

Are you ready to change your life and lose weight without dieting? “In two weeks I lost 16 pounds. I lost my desire to eat everything in sight. My attitude changed instantly with more positive thoughts and emotions. I’m really amazed at how easy this has all come about. I am very impressed with hypnosis. It’s nothing like I’ve seen on TV. I was awake and aware the whole time. It was a great experience. It works! — John Gluth
Lose Weight Easily with Hypnosis Hypnosis can help you lose weight easily and permanently without dieting. Hypnosis allows you to easily let go of your cravings for sweets, unhealthy snacks or emotional eating patterns. In hypnosis your subconscious mind accepts and creates new healthy patterns and habits. Stop feeling bad or beating yourself up, because the fact is willpower doesn’t work. Hypnosis helps you eliminate the selfsabotaging behavior and thoughts that are keeping you from true positive change in your life; and because each session is customized for your specific needs, your eating behavior changes after the first session.
The Journal of Clinical Psychology reported that in a recent study weight loss subjects who utilized hypnosis as an adjunct to their weight loss programs experienced significantly more weight loss than the subjects who did not use hypnosis. The mean weight loss was 6 pounds without hypnosis and 15 pounds with hypnosis. The benefits increased substantially over time.

FootballRoundup OAK HARBOR 33 — MARGARETTA 21 BY J. PATRICK EAKEN A healthy Steve Young completed 14 of 26 passes and threw two touchdowns as Oak Harbor came from behind to defeat visiting Margaretta 33-21 in Sandusky Bay Conference action. Young, who missed several games because of an injury, connected with Zach Priesman for two touchdowns. In all, Priesman caught five passes for 102 yards. Young also had 9 yards rushing on four carries, including two touchdowns, and he did punting duties — placing three boots a total of 107 yards, including one 47-yard punt. “Our offense did a great job of answering their scores in the first quarter, which kept us in the game. Steve Young played a fine game at quarterback, accounting for four touchdowns in his first game back from injury. Our offen-

sive line also played well led by Mike Mallernee and Zach Sandwisch,” Oak Harbor coach Mike May said. Oak Harbor improved to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the SBC. Oak Harbor had 338 total net yards to Margaretta’s 330. The Rockets, with 187 passing and 151 rushing, had 20 first downs to Margaretta’s 12. One of the big factors in Oak Harbor getting into the end zone after the first quarter was that the Rockets converted on 7-of-14 third downs, while Margaretta converted only once in 10 third down situations. Oak Harbor converted on 1 of 2 fourth downs, Margaretta on 2 of 4. A first quarter shootout ended with each team scoring three times, but Margaretta held a 21-20 lead. The Polar Bears would not score another point. Oak Harbor scored twice in the final quarter to close out the victory. Young scored on a two-yard run with 11:07 remaining in the game, and then Jake Scott added a 4-yard touchdown run for insurance points with 1:49 remaining. “The win over Margaretta was a big win for us. I was proud of the way our kids handled adversity and played hard the entire 48 minutes,” May said. Margaretta got on the board first via a 28-yard touchdown pass from Devin Jones to Kyle Homerick. After Kaine Kerr’s conversion, the Polar Bears took a quick 7-0 lead with 9:41 remaining. But Oak Harbor came right back on Young’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Zack Priesman with 5:47 remaining in the first quarter. Backus’s kick evened the score at seven points apiece. It took Margaretta 21 seconds to get on the board following Priesman’s TD, as Polar Bear back Bryce Frederick took off on an 85-yard touchdown run, but the kick failed leaving Margaretta in the lead 13-7. It only took Oak Harbor 11 seconds after Frederick’s TD to score as Young connected on a second touchdown pass to Priesman, this time covering 63 yards. The Backus kick gave the Rockets a 14-13 advantage, but 5:15 still remained in the opening quarter.
CARDINAL STRITCH 41 — DANBURY 16 BY J. PATRICK EAKEN Cardinal Stritch running back Kyle Gladieux had a field day in the Cardinals 41-16 victory over Danbury Saturday at Northwood High School’s field. Gladieux scored two touchdowns and had over 100 yards rushing to lead Stritch, and that was just in the first half. “My hats off to Stritch,” Danbury coach Tim Heffernan said. “They are a good program and all year long they have been building. That No. 7, Kyle Gladieux, is a phenomenol player.” Gladieux led Stritch to a 34-0 halftime lead, and 41-0 after three quarters, but the Lakers would have a quarter of thier own. In the fourth quarter’s final three minutes and one second, the Lakers put together two touchdown drives and almost had the chance to get a third. Could they win? Probably not, but they were never going to give up. “We showed we can do some things in the second half,” Coach Heffernan said. “We got a little momentum going.” After Danbury freshman defensive back Dan Gast recovered a Stritch fumble at the Laker 44-yard line, the Laker offense finally started clicking with eight minutes remaining. But it took two consecutive fumbles by Stritch before the Lakers could get on the board. After recovering another fumble with 5:11 remainig, Danbuy took over at the Laker 49. Sophomore back Lucas Kennedy then ran twice for 9 and 24 yards, and Rodney Johnson ran the final two times with runs covering 13 and 5 runs. It took four running plays, but Danbury had six points. Kennedy than ran the two-point conversion to give Dan-

Margaretta got back on the scoreboard with 3:29 remaining as quarterback Devin Jones found the end zone from 32 yards out. Jones completed a two-point conversion pass to Corey Yontz to put the Polar Bears back in front 21-14. The opening quarter saw its final touchdown when Young ran into the end zone from 6 yards out with 11 seconds remaining. The conversion attempt failed, leaving Oak Harbor on the trailing end of the game until the final quarter. “Defensively we struggled on the first quarter, but were able to make some adjustments and shut them out during the final three quarters. Davey Burkett had a key play that changed the momentum in our favor with a huge hit and forced fumble,” May said. Besides Priesman, Young completed three passes to Brad Perry for 38 yards, including one pass covering 19 yards. Young also completed three to D.J. Everett, good for 29 yards, and three to Matt Klippstein for 18 yards. Everett and Klippstein each caught one pass covering 11 yards. Scott led Oak Harbor’s running game, covering 96 yards on 23 carries, including one 12-yard run. Klippstein ran for 37 yards on 12 carries, Brad Perry had eight yards on one carry, and Jordan Cannet had two runs of 0 and 2 yards. On defense, D.J. Everett had one interception for Oak Harbor, which he returned seven yards. Devin Jones completed 8-of-23 passes for Margaretta, including four to Homerick for 51 yards. Frederick led Margaretta’s running game, covering 104 yards on only six carries, while Jones ran for 85 yards on 13 carries. On defense, Jones had two interceptions. This Friday, the Rockets travel to Port Clinton to take on the Redskins. “Port Clinton is a big challenge for us. They are a very athletic team at the skill positions. I think they have one of the top quarterbacks and receivers in the SBC. We need to play physical and keep from giving up big plays to win this Friday,” Coach May said.

bury eight points with 3:01 remaining. An onside kick was recovered by 6-5, 270 Danbury junior Hunter Stephens at the Stritch 48. From there it took one play--Kennedy ran a reverse 48 yards into the end zone. After a Nathan Hartman pass was incomplete, Stritch was flagged for pass interference. On a second conversion from under two yards away, Johnson found the end zone easily. Trailing 41-16 with 2:46 remaining, another onside kick to the opposite side of where Laker players were set up almost worked, but Stritch recovered and had little difficulty putting away two minutes of time until having to punt. But with 45 seconds remaining, Danbury had the ball again at the Stritch 43, and almost found the end zone. The Lakers came up five yards short. First, Johnson took the first down play nearly 30 yards on a run, but after a Danbury offensive holding penalty, his run was cut down to 14 yards, plus 10 yards taken away for the violation. At the Stritch 39, Kennedy than ran 28 yards to the Stritch 11. Only 11.3 seconds remained, but Kennedy ran another six yards but the Lakers could not get off another play. “The second half we had some fun,” Heffernan said. “I think they were upset with themselves the way they played in the first half. We shot ourselves in the foot a few times with turnovers. We average three turnovers a game, and that’s not good. That’s something we definitely need to work on. We grow as we get older and as we get more mature those are the things that we are going to work on and get better at.” The Lakers were playing most of the game without the services of senior fullback/linebacker George Biedenbach, who may have suffered a concussion early in the game, Danbury coaches say. But the services of Kennedy were received well, since he had missed much of the early game this season due to injury. He had also part of 2008 because of an injury. Senior E.J. Tennant and junior Dakota Hruby were also on the sidelines with injuries. “He (Kennedy) broke his foot in the last game last year, and hurt his knee in our second scrimmage this year so we haven’t had him to use,” Coach Heffernan said. “We’ve been fighting adversity all year long. Yesterday, our starting guard went down. “Injuries are the name of the game. We’ve had injuries all year long. We’re not going to use that as an excuse. Good teams overcome adversity, and injuries are a form of adversity so we have to do that,” Heffernan continued.

Lessons From a Bear Market If you invest for many years, you’ll eventually encounter both bull and bear markets. Although you obviously prefer seeing the bull, you may actually learn more from the bear — and when it’s “hibernating, you can put these lessons to good use in making investment moves for the future. Here are some of the key “bear market lessons to consider: s 0URCHASE QUALITY INVESTMENTS ! bear market tends to drag everything DOWN WITH IT "UT QUALITY INVESTMENTS — those with strong fundamentals and good prospects — have the potential to BOUNCE BACK QUICKLY ONCE THE BEAR MARKET ENDS 4HAT S WHY YOU LL WANT TO CONSIDER OWNING THESE QUALITY VEHICLES in all investment climates. In fact, try to avoid owning investments today that you wouldn’t want to own in a bear market tomorrow. s -AINTAIN REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS -ANY INVESTORS LOOK BACK FONDLY AT THE MID TO LATE S WHEN WE FREQUENTLY experienced double-digit stock market returns. Unfortunately, these results “raised the bar in terms of what investors expect — and these elevated expectations led to problems for people whose long-term financial goals were based on overly optimistic projections. By anticipating more modest returns, you’ll be able to set more realistic, achievable goals. At the same time, don’t be surprised at the recurrence of bear markets, which are a normal part of the investing process. s +NOW YOUR RISK TOLERANCE )F YOU lND YOURSELF LOSING sleep over the fate of your investments in the midst of a bear market, you may need to review your risk tolerance and adjust your portfolio accordingly. But keep things in perspective. Instead of fretting over daily or monthly downturns, ask yourself this: “How much can I afford to lose and still meet my financial goals, such as achieving a comfortable retirement? You’ll come up with different answers at different stages of your life. s "ASE INVESTMENT DECISIONS ON PRINCIPLES ˆ NOT PREDICtions. Everybody can make investment predictions — and they usually do. But many of these prognosticators have poor track records. So, instead of acting on predictions, base your investment decisions on principles, such as buyING QUALITY INVESTMENTS MAINTAINING A LONG TERM PERSPECtive and diversifying your portfolio. While diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, it can help reduce risk when the market is volatile. s -AINTAIN ADEQUATE LIQUIDITY )F YOU ARE PLANNING ON cashing out a long-term investment to pay for a major expense, such as a down payment on a home or college tuition for a child, you could run into difficulty if a bear market is raging and the value of your investments have dropped. To avoid this problem, maintain a portion of your portfolio in LIQUID INVESTMENTS !LTHOUGH THESE VEHICLES WON T PROVIDE you with a high return, they offer greater preservation of principal — which is just what you need when you need the money now. s ,OOK FOR GOOD INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES $URING A BEAR MARKET YOU CAN ALMOST ALWAYS lND QUALITY INVESTMENTS While their prices may be down, these investments can still offer good growth potential — and typically, the best time to buy them is when their value is down. By following these lessons, you can prepare yourself for a bear market — and help avoid getting “clawed by it.
