Port Clinton Lakefront Preserve
Partnership protects coast PORT CLINTON — The public’s access to Ohio’s Lake Erie coast was recently enhanced with the acquisition of 25 parcels in Port Clinton. Combined, the Port Clinton Lakefront Preserve includes 12.04 acres of coastal wetlands and marsh, and a 1/3-mile sand beach shore. The preserve is located north of East Perry Street. The road is part of the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail of the National Scenic Byways Program; the land, part of the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways for migratory birds, is an Audubon Ohio Designated Important Bird Area. “By preserving this waterfowl and bird habitat site, we have the opportunity to increase eco-tourism and create nearly a mile-long continuous stretch of Lake Erie public access by connecting Water Works Park on the west to Lakefront Park City Beach on the east, said Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester. Only 16 percent of Ohio’s 312-mile Lake Erie shore is publicly accessible. This acquisition increases Ohio’s publicly accessible coastal miles to 48.9 at 144 sites. Just as the preserve links land, the purchasing process brought together partners at the local, state and national level.

Thanksgiving feasts

For the 19th year on Thanksgiving Day, the Port Clinton area will come together at the Trinity United Methodist Church fellowship hall, corner of Adams and Second streets, from 11:30 to 2 p.m. to celebrate Thanksgiving. Plans are now being made for this great time of fellowship as volunteers and committee members create a festive atmosphere and prepare a buffet of traditional foods for all to enjoy. The committee continues to invite new volunteers, as well as those who have assisted in past years, to help in the Fellowship Hall with table service, greeting, delivery coordination and food preparation. This event can only be made possible through monetary and food donations from the community as well as the great amount of time given by our local volunteers and committee members. Welcoming all to this Thanksgiving Feast, the committee encourages area residents to bring families and friends, or to come alone, and join us in celebrating this important time of togetherness. Reservations are never required.
To volunteer, to donate food (hams, turkeys, canned sweet potatoes are needed), or for information call Ginna by Friday, Nov. 20, at 419-967-0185. To sign-up for shut-in delivery, call Marion by Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 419-732-3582.

The menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, dinner roll, homemade pumpkin pie and a beverage. Everyone is welcome for dine-in services. No carry-outs will be available but those in Allen, Benton, Carroll, Clay, Harris and Salem townships who are unable to drive can arrange to be picked up for the community celebration. Dear Editor. I recently attended the dinner for the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Erie and Ottawa Counties at the CIC Club. We had informative speakers, wonderful food and deserving award recipients. The only mar of the evening was from a gentleman whom I don’t know his names, but from watching him interact with people he is well known. ——— Speaking of church circle, our focus tonight was on the work of the Salvation Army. We collected a few nonperishable foods and paper products to be distributed to anyone who needs them. Executive Director Maureen Saponari will speak to our group sometime during the winter or spring. Right now she is busily preparing for the red kettle bell-ringing season. She is also collecting coats for people who will need them during cold weather. Your monetary donations to the Salvation Army will be greatly appreciated. And if you can assist in ringing those bells, that would be a help, too. Call Maureen at 419-732-2769 to find out how you can be of service to this good organization. ——— Next I do want to mention that my nephew John Kirk told me that several folks have called to ask the Port Clinton Boy Scout troop to do some various chores to help raise funds for a trip to New Mexico in 2010. The boys, who are ages 13 to 15, will work for donations. Money raised will be used to fund the $900 per person fees to make the trip. So, if you need some work done, just call John Kirk at 419-734-5755. United Way mid-way through campaign
When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees.
PORT CLINTON — Imagine, if you will, a troubled 13-year-old girl. “Julie comes from a blended home that is so burdened with financial worries, they don’t have time to make her a priority. As a result, Julie feels neglected and has developed a history of defiant behavior, has fallen behind in school and struggles with depression. Julie is actually a real girl in Ottawa County and her situation is unfortunately more common than you might think. Fortunately, there are programs that exist to help. In Julie’s case, the Ottawa County Family and Children First Council’s Family Preservation Program, funded in part by United Way in Ottawa County, was able to step in. A wraparound coordinator created a plan for Julie’s family that included an academic accountability component, a plan for quality family time, counseling and solicitation of outside funds to help facilitate Julie’s

PRESERVE, continued from 1A In 2006 the city of Port Clinton approached the Ohio Office of The Trust for Public Land seeking assistance in acquiring the preserve properties. The city also applied for a grant from the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Management. In Federal fiscal year 2007, the preserve’s acquisition was ranked 12 out of 59 projects competing nationally for CELCP funding through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. After three years of negotiations by the TPL, the Port Clinton Lakefront Preserve properties were purchased for just under $1.4 million. A CELCP grant provided slightly less than 50 percent of the funding and the rest came from the Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Fund. The city of Port Clinton owns the property and Black Swamp Conservancy holds a conservation easement over the entire preserve, requiring that the land be maintained as a nature preserve forever. “Lake Erie is a tremendous natural resource. The lake provides drinking water for millions of Ohioans and habitat for many species of fish, birds, animals and plants. Lake Erie also attracts thousands of visitors each year for boating, fishing, swimming and other recreational opportunities, said Kevin Joyce, executive director

of Black Swamp Conservancy. “Our conservancy is extremely pleased to be able to partner with the city of Port Clinton, state of Ohio and The Trust for Public Land to protect the Lakefront Preserve in perpetuity for public use. TPL would like to use this project’s success as an example to lead additional coastal communities to increase their public access. “Because of the leadership and vision of community and political leaders, the Port Clinton lakeshore will be protected and enjoyed by the public. We are grateful to the state, the city of Port Clinton, and the Black Swamp Conservancy for working with TPL and the community to create a spectacular Lake Erie preserve, said TPL Project Manager Neal Hess. “TPL is working with other community leaders to provide park land along Lake Erie, and the Port Clinton Lakefront Preserve is a significant success story representative of our commitment. The city of Port Clinton plans on seeking additional grant funding for removal of invasive plants and improvements to coastal marsh habitat. “The Lakefront Preserve is one of the great achievements for Port Clinton in some time, said City Council President Linda Hartlaub. “We could not have accomplished joining two parks together with the Lakefront Preserve addition without The Trust for Public Land and our other partners.
“The most important advice I can give is to have a plan. It’s so important to try to envision where you see yourself in 20 years, set some realistic goals based on that outcome. Throughout my career and life I have always set short- and long-term goals that have fed into each other. When I had accomplished my short-term goal the long-term wouldn’t be so far away. This assisted me in mapping out clear expectations and meeting my goals.
What is it that motivates you to continue fighting after 40 attacks? “That’s simple. Soldiers. I never forget where I came from; I was once a young Soldier and I looked up to my role models and mentors because they were the ones always at the tip of the spear — out front leading by example. This has been a driving force throughout my career. I live by the motto, ‘Don’t ask anyone to do anything that you would not do yourself or have not done yourself already.’ I have kept that in my mind’s eye for my entire career and believe it is what has made me who I am today.
As a soldier, how important is Veteran’s Day? What does it mean to you? “This is the most important day of the year to me because we are reminded to pay tribute to those who have served and are currently serving our great nation. We must never forget the sacrifice that these Service members and family

have made in support of our defense. I take great pride in being a professional Soldier and can’t think of any greater job for me. The service has been a family, a way of life. I have people that I can call on in the middle of the night and know they will be there for me. It is a ‘brotherhood.’ On this day and every day we need to remember those Service members that have made the Ultimate Sacrifice, and think of the many families that have been left behind. GOD BLESS OUR SERVICE MEMBERS.
Any fun memories you’d like to share about your time in Oak Harbor/at OHHS? “My greatest memories are from my senior year on the wrestling team. As I look back, what stands out is the positive impact one person can have on a group of young kids. Coach Joe Bergman had a positive impact on all of us — especially me. Here is a guy that saw each individual for who he was and worked to get the most out of each young person. He trained us hard and brought us together. He proved to me that hard work equals success. This has stayed with me as a lasting influence throughout the years. Thanks Coach!

Schools Pumpkin Day lessons at Port Clinton Middle School On Friday, October 30, 2009 Port Clinton Middle School held its annual “Pumpkin Day for Fleet 7 Oct. 30. This interdisciplinary lesson covered many subject areas allowing for fun and educational lessons for grade 7 students. In science class, students weighed 30 pumpkins and counted the seeds. The students would then calculate the average number of seeds per pound and then estimate the number of seeds in the “Mystery Pumpkin which weighs 15 pounds. The person who guesses the closest to the actual number wins a prize. Then, depending on the number of seeds in the mystery pumpkin, students will talk about their hypotheses to see if they could or could not mathematically predict the seed count.

Holiday happenings at the Vineyard The Vineyard on Catawba celebrated Halloween in grand style Oct. 30. Seventy-four residents, staff and guests entered the Community Center to find it transformed in a haunted forest and graveyard. Those attending sat at dinner tables decorated with macabre decorations, candy and snacks. A tour guide, Paul Shaw, led residents on a trip through the cemetery. Talented Vineyard staff members portrayed the Grim Reaper, a mummy, a ghost, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, a lumberjack, two witches, Dracula and a damsel in distress. Michael Jackson (aka Karen Muirhead) brought down
the house with a rendition of “Thriller. Residents were then rewarded with prizes for the scariest costume (Joan Hudak as the Dark Lady) and the funniest costume (DJ Pogan as Santa’s Elf). John and Robin Bennett of the Second Street Diner then served dinner for everyone, ending with John’s famous apple crisp and ice cream. The Vineyard is now looking forward to its annual Holiday Tour of Lights at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. The public is invited to this free event, featuring sleigh and carriage rides, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and homemade treats and beverages.

Respect the referee Want to be a referee, umpire or judge in sports these days? Lots of people are loudly critical of the officials they are watching, but really don’t have any desire to join them. It’s a whole lot easier to second guess and criticize than it is to actually make the calls. I’ve often wondered how referees keep their concentration and composure when taking abuse from fans and coaches. It has to be a serious problem in a job where you have a police escort to and from the game. I had a great interview about that with Sid Rodeheffer, one of the most experienced referees in the country. Sid is a long time NCAA Division I basketball and football referee. He began by working city recreation games in college and moved through the ranks until he now works exclusively at the highest level of college basketball. He’s had 23 years of football experience during which he officiated some high visibility games. His 25 years in Big Ten basketball include 15 of being selected to referee NCAA tournaments in the famous March Madness championships! It was a terrific interview and I have an increased respect for how tough the job is and how well it is done in the high pressure venue of college sports. I appreciate Sid taking the time to meet with me! You will find his answers enlightening. What is a referee’s primary goal in a game? Give each team an equal opportunity to win the game. You want to assure every participant a level playing field so the players decide the outcome of the game.
You orchestrate the entire contest. What are the qualifications needed? Have common sense about the sport. Previous experience playing or coaching helps you better understand the flow and momentum of that particular sport. Single out the common “moves” in the sport and know which ones are fouls. (The coaches will have a “book” on each ref and anticipate consistency.) Get experience before moving to each higher level. Expect a lot of travel. Referees have no home games. The training is a natural progression. It’s ongoing and demonstrated in front of thousands of people. It’s a challenging job, and you must be a survivor. Is sportsmanship important? Yes. The lack of it reflects society’s disrespect of authority in general. The sportsmanship effort transcends the activity itself. Administrators at all levels are struggling with the issue. How do you handle hostility? From Coaches: Understand college coaches are under tremendous pressure to win and they are intense. Listen to complaints but don’t try to justify a call. If the coach’s behavior steps over the line, signal them to stop. If the behavior continues, the penalty consequences begin. “Give them a rope. They either hang themselves or get under control.” “Working the ref ” (trying to get favorable treatment on future calls), is only an announcer’s perception. You try to get every call right, but you can’t. Ask yourself if you would make the same call again. If you made a mistake, admit it and move

on. Coaches should be referees at some point in their career so they have a better perspective of an official’s job. From Players: Athletes hoping to turn pro need minutes to impress scouts and build stats. If they get fouls, they lose playing time; hence the anger. Work the game for the players. If the players respect the referee, the coach will too. From Fans: Do not get involved unless the behavior interrupts the game. Then play must be stopped until the offenders are removed by administrators or security. Officials must forget that there is anyone outside the lines. The roar from the crowd becomes just noise. Total concentration is essential. Don’t take harassment personally. They’re yelling at the shirt. It’s an outgrowth of the contest. Be professional. Do not let the crowd (or coaches) influence a call. Reflection: “Very few people get to go through life doing something they have a passion to do and get paid for it. I’m very lucky.” Sid Rodeheffer asks that I remind everyone that kids can’t play organized sports without referees. My request is: Respect them! Karen Coffin, retired coach, is a member of the P.C.H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame. She speaks to coaches and parents about “Kids and Sports” and facilitates Coaching Education classes for the State of Ohio. Contact her at coachcoffin @cros.net.

The awards program, unique to the state, has developed into “healthy competition among the operators and has proven to be beneficial not only to the health department, but to the residents and visitors to Ottawa County. Firelands ranked as top employer Firelands Regional Medical Center has been ranked the 38th best place to work in healthcare in the nation, according to Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare. This ranking makes Firelands the top hospital in Ohio to receive this designation and one of only four healthcare organizations in the state of Ohio to be in the top 100. Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare recognizes outstanding employers in the healthcare industry on a national level. “It is an honor for Firelands to be named as one of the nation’s best healthcare employers and the top hospital in Ohio, says Jim Sennish, Vice President of Human Resources at Firelands Regional Medical Center. “This ranking has significance to our organization and to the community because we know that satisfied employees are the foundation to excellent patient care. Employee satisfaction has a direct effect on how an employee performs his or her job duties — and in our case, that means being part of the patient care team that cares for our community. Only in its second year, Modern Healthcare’s Best Places
to Work in Healthcare Program collects information from both the employer and employees and is open to all healthcare companies (providers, suppliers, payers, associations, etc.) with at least 25 employees. Employers completed a survey detailing company policies, practices, benefits and demographics. Employees were asked an in-depth set of questions that resulted in an analysis in 8 core areas: leadership and planning, culture and communications, role satisfaction, working environment, relationship with supervisor, training and development, pay and benefits and overall satisfaction. For a complete listing of the Modern Healthcare’ Best Places to Work in Healthcare, visit www. modernhealthcare.com. In addition to being ranked the 38th best place to work in healthcare in the nation, Firelands Regional Medical Center was ranked seventh in the state of Ohio in 2008 as Best Employer by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce which ranked all types of employers.
