ARRIVE ALIVE Campaign Launched at Huron High

Around Town Page 2 —————— Milestones & Church Chat Page 3 —————— Library,

The students at Huron High School discovered last week the challenges and problems associated with distracted driving as the campaign “Arrive Alive” was launched during the Texting and Driving Awareness Week. Patty VanBarg, the art teacher at Huron High, was astounded by the number of students who had openly admitted to texting and driving. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in crashes involving driver distraction (16% of total fatalities). The 16-20 age group had the highest proportion of distracted drivers involved in fatal crashes (16%). (http://www.distraction.gov/stats-andfacts/) With these facts being known, VanBarg with the help of School Resource Officer Keith Lobsinger and support from Police Chief John Majoy, Superintendent Fred Fox, John Ruf, Principal and Tony Munafo, Assistant Principal, the “Texting and Driving Awareness Week” was launched. The week long awareness event consisted of the art classes making campaign posters informing the community of the dangers of “texting and driving”, an anti-texting button campaign, multiple contests associated with the theme, an all school assembly on Thursday and a handson texting and driving car simulator for the students to try. Last Thursday morning all Huron High School students attended an assembly focusing on distracted driving. Guest speakers included a combination people who have been touched by texting and driving. Victims of texting and driving spoke of their horrific accidents and how those events have impacted their lives. Whether the individual was the victim of a driver texting or was the driver texting, the silent student body listened in to every word being shared by the presenters. One of the presenters was one of their own classmates, McKenzie Davis, a senior who had cause her own accident last December while texting and driving. A very brave Davis stood in front of the student body, supported by her friends, Taryn Graham and Allie Shied, and shared the reality and severity of her accident. In addition, Bruce Miller, a State Farm Agent also discussed the ramifications and financial responsibilities of an accident. Huron Police Chief John Majoy spoke to the students about the laws surrounding texting and driving and shared a personal experience of having to deliver the unfortunate news of an accident to a family member as a result of texting and driving. On Friday all the students had the opportunity to experiment with the virtual text driving simulator sponsored by the Huron Police and the Huron Eagles. The simulator was an actual car with virtual reality gear in it which would

simulate the full effects of driving while texting. Classmates watched each other on a big screen outside the car as they realized to give both activities; texting and driving, full attention is very difficult and dangerous. Frank Arvay, a Law Enforcement Liaison of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, was onsite to observe the “Arrive Alive” program with Huron as the frontrunner in the model of developing a statewide program for texting and driving.

Classmates had the opportunity to watch each other attempt to drive distractedly and learn from each other’s mistakes. This reinforcement helped the students see repetitively how challenging and dangerous texting and driving is. Inset: Josh Evers, a student at Huron High School, tries out the texting simulator. Students were asked to make a promise and take a pledge not to text and drive knowing the dangers of injuring or killing themselves or someone else. Although it is a law in Huron not to text and drive, there is presently a bill in legislation currently to make texting and driving illegal throughout the state of Ohio. A new study by AAA reported, “Parent’s are the biggest influence on how teens drive.” The One-Call system was used as a public service announcement to encourage parents to get involved and discuss this important topic with their students. Many community members, school officials, teachers, parents and students had come together to make last week a lesson learned and hopefully raised an awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. Much appreciation goes to the following individuals who made this program possible: Superintendent Fred Fox, Mr. Ruf, Principal,

Student Athletes Honored at Hall of Fame Dinner Recently the Wistert Chapter of the National Football Foundation held their 49th Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner in Toledo at the Stranahan Great Hall. At this celebration of the student athlete, three of Huron’s finest were honored. They included seniors Joey Bogden, Jacob Hillman, and Dan Nagy. The guest speaker of the event was none other than OSU’s Jim Tressel. Offensive lineman Joey Bogden and wide receiver Jake Hillman were chosen to be Scholar-Athlete Awardees for their outstanding achievements both on and off the field. Bogden has maintained a 3.761 GPA while also performing community service, coaching Youth Flag Football, and participating in the Tiger Football Mentor Leadership Program. On the field, he was awarded first team All-SBC, All District Offense, and Honorable Mention All-State. Meanwhile, Hillman, who was also first team All-SBC, first team All District Offense, and third team All-State, maintained a 3.688 GPA while also participating in the Mentor Leadership Program and coaching in the Youth Flag Football program. One of the biggest awards of the evening was given to Huron’s own Dan Nagy. He was awarded the prestigious Don King Courage Award & Scholarship. Mr. King was the “voice of ” many Toledo sports and college athletics in Northwest Ohio. He also served our country during the Korean War as part of the 101st Airborne. He was a big advocate for the student athlete. Nagy is just 5’6” and 135 lbs, but played fullback and defensive lineman this past season. His teammates thought so much of him that they awarded him the “Selfless Award” which is the only individual award given in the Huron program. The award reflects on the person’s loyalty, dedication, and inner strength. Danny has faced many challenges in his personal life including family adversity and has displayed class and dignity according to his head coach Tony Legando. Through all the struggles, Danny has been able to maintain a 3.408 GPA while taking college prepatory classes. He has also served many hours of community service while still competing as a two sport athlete at Huron High School.

Around Town Helping Hands Food Pantry Awarded $2,500 BY LISA YAKO A few months ago, Sue Finnegan of Florence Township received a call from the Monsanto Fund informing her that she was chosen as the 2011 Erie County, Ohio, winner of Monsanto’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities Program. As a winner, Sue was given the opportunity to designate a local nonprofit to receive $2,500. Sue felt very strongly that she wanted “to give the money to someone who needs food. Sue and her husband, Mike, explored many options in deciding where to give the money. They chose the Huron Helping Hands Food Pantry at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church because this organization helps feed hundreds of people monthly, even those who might be neighbors of the Finnegans. Monsanto’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities Program was started in 2010. Farmers in more than 1,200 counties in 38 states have the opportunity to enter to win $2,500 for a local nonprofit of their choice. The purpose of this program is “to recognize the vital role that America’s

farmers play and to help them grow their communities by supporting a local organization that is important to them. Through this program, the Monsanto Fund expects to invest more than $3 million in local communities. On Wednesday, April 6, Mike and Sue Finnegan and Tom Ruffing of Sunrise Cooperative, Inc., in Norwalk, who sells Monsanto’s products and who served as their representative, presented Pastor Tom Holzaepfel of the Huron Helping Hands Food Pantry with a check for $2,500. Mike and Sue Finnegan were glad to have the opportunity to give the $2,500 award to the Huron Helping Hands Food Pantry, even though it was not an organization with which they were personally familiar. Pastor Holzaepfel gave the Finnegans and Mr. Ruffing a tour of the facility and described the services that his organization provides for the community. In the end, the Finnegans were very impressed with the facility and its outreach, and happy to have designated the Huron Helping Hands Food Pantry as the recipient of their donation.

TAXES Deadline April 18th FROM THE DESK OF DEE HARTLEY, SENIOR TAX ADVISOR AT HURON H & R BLOCK The filing deadline for the 2010 tax return is Monday, April 18, 2011. Even with the extra 3 days anyone not ready to file should consider filing an extension, but remember this does not extend the time to. In today’s world even the extension form can be e-filed. For those who have filed their return, here are tips right from IRS of what to do with those papers you gathered to get the job done. If, as you are sorting the papers, you find something you missed there are always amended returns to tidy up what you may have been in a hurry to finish. Tips for Managing Your Tax Records After you file your taxes, you will have many records that may help document items on your tax return. You will need these documents should the IRS select your return for examination. Here are five tips from the IRS about keeping good records. 1. Normally, tax records should be kept for three years. 2. Some documents — such as records relating to a home purchase or sale, stock transactions, IRA and business or rental property — should be kept longer. 3. In most cases, the IRS does not require you to keep records in any special manner. Generally speaking, however, you should keep any and all documents that may have an impact on your federal tax return. 4. Records you should keep include bills, credit card and other receipts, invoices, mileage logs, canceled, imaged or substitute checks, proofs of payment, and any other records to support deductions or credits you claim on your return. 5. For more information on what kinds of records to keep, see IRS Publication 552, Recordkeeping for Individuals, which is available on the IRS website at http://www.irs. gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Three National Performance Poets to Appear at BGSU Firelands Nationally-known performance poets Sara Holbrook, Ray McNiece, and Michael Salinger will conduct workshops and perform at Bowling Green State University Firelands College on Wed., April 20, as part of the college’s Performance Poetry Series during National Poetry Month. “Performance poetry differs from traditional poetry in that it is specifically written for a live audience,” said Larry Smith, professor emeritus of Humanities at BGSU Firelands and the director of the Firelands Writing Center. “These poets need to appeal to the audience on a level that goes well beyond the written word. We’re offering some training in performance for area poets, young and old.” The programs is supported through a grant from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Erie County and sponsored by the BGSU Firelands Speech Activities Organization-Theatre and BGSU Firelands Writing Center. “This is a truly exciting poetry event and we are pleased to help bring this to the Firelands campus,” said John Allton, spokesman for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Erie County. Free and open to the public, there will be two programs offered at the college on Wed., April 20. An earlyday workshop presented by the three performance poets will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the college’s Cedar Point Center. EHOVE Interactive Media Technology students Amanda Torres (Vermilion H.S.), Josh Cowan (Norwalk H.S.) and Mary Miller (Edison H.S.) were awarded sixth place and a $200 prize at the 10th annual Kick Some Butts anti-tobacco contest. Over 100 teams from all over Northwest Ohio competed for the top prizes. EHOVE Treasurer and Kick Some Butts Committee Member Larry Hanneman helped develop the competition about ten years ago “Our original goal was to reduce teen smoking by 50%. We want to get the message out to kids and we continue to reach more and more,” said Hanneman. “We had over 100 videos this year. That’s over 300 teens researching and creating these messages.” Hanneman also described how one high school chose to broadcast the video its students made on its morning video announcements. “It reached over 1000 students alone at that one school,” said Hanneman. Pleased with the increase in participants, Hanneman thinks the competition has raised the creativity factor. “What some of them come up with raises the hair on the back of your neck. Their creativity and thought process is incredible. They’re getting the message out.” Hanneman said that tobacco settlement monies collected by the State of Ohio originally funded the competition, but now have been diverted to other projects. The program relies on support from local hospitals, physicians, dentists, and community members to continue the program. Kami Moon of K96 volunteered as emcee and Matt McMorrow donates his time to manage the online needs of the group for video submissions and more. Other sponsors include Fisher-Titus Medical Center, The Bellevue Hospital, Samaritan Regional Health System, Samaritan Hospital Foundation, Memorial Hospital, Firelands Federal Credit Union and Pepperidge Farm.

Huron pitcher, Ian McCready’s complete game shutout took down the team from Brookside on a day, in years past, when only the weather would have picked up a win. Playing on the new diamond at Woodlands Elementary, the Tigers scored two runs in both the second and third innings to take the lead, while McCready’s three hitter did the rest for the 5-0 victory. The solid pitching effort was also aided by a zero error performance by the young Tiger defense. Offensively, Huron scored five runs on seven hits. Kyle Pisano, Troy Delamatre, and McCready led the home team with two hits a piece. Delamatre and McCready, alone, accounted for three doubles and a triple. But Zach Souter also came up big scoring two of the Tiger runs himself. Still, according to coach Kastor, there is still work to be done. “We left way too many runners on base. We left seven teammates stranded in the first four innings (ten total). I’m hoping that we will start getting those timely hits in the right situations.” “Ian had a very strong outing tonight,” summarized Kastor. “He only gave up three hits and they were all in different innings. He did a great job of locating his fastball on the corners as well as changing speeds. Overall, I’m pleased with the development that we are making as a team. We are starting to expect to win instead of hoping that it happens.”

In the JV doubleheader against Norwalk, Huron’s Larry Pisano tries to turn a double play against the Truckers JV squad. Huron ends up short in both games despite great effort.

Lady Tigers Earn First Win Things have been tough early on for the Huron varsity softball team. For the most part, they have not had there entire squad for a game yet. They have also faced some pretty good offensive teams in their preparation for the upcoming SBC schedule. This past week started out on a high note with the ladies getting their first win of the season against Brookside, 7-4. Karissa Shepherd and Olivia Warren combined for the victory on the mound. Warren looked particularly sharp holding the opposition to zero hits for her first decision of the season. Renee St. Clair led the offense going 3 for 4 with a triple and 3 RBI’s. The Tigers trailed 4-1 going into the sixth inning when freshman Amanda Vacca singled, followed by walks from Kate Weber and Lauren Volz. St. Clair then ripped a triple to clear the bases and tie the game at four a piece. Morgan Asberry then doubled across St. Clair to give Huron the lead for good. The Tigers scored two more insurance runs in the seventh. (Huron was technically the visiting team

but Brookside asked if the game could be moved here because of the weather.) “It was a complete team win today,” said head coach Mike Everman. “We were again glad to be home on our new field and get our first win of the season at home. Karissa Shepherd pitched a good game and Olivia Warren came in and shut down their bats for the win.” Later in the week, Huron mounted a massive come back against the Truckers of Norwalk, but fell just short, 17-16. The teams combined for 41 hits en route to scoring 33 runs. Senior shortstop Lauren Volz led the team tonight going 5 for 5 with 3 doubles and 2 singles. She also scored three times and added four RBI’s. St.Clair remained hot at the plate with thee more hits, including two doubles and four RBI’s. “We just fell a few short tonight,” said Everman. “Everyone was putting the ball in play. We just needed to capitalize on the other team’s defensive mental mistakes.

Bill Scott’s Tiger track team finished in first place on Saturday at an invitational held in Castalia. The women’s team also had a very good day by posting a third place finish out of six teams. The boys’ win was in the balance as the teams lined up for the 4X400 relay, the final race of the day. But Ryan Biddlecombe, Dan Nagy, Mitch Hagstrom, and Jake Hillman outdistanced the rest of the pack to finish with a time of 3:30.4. Huron overtook Margaretta and Willard by two points in the final standings, 94 - 92. Other winners on the day included: The boys shot put relay of Ryan McNulty, Joey Bogden, Tyler Sams The boys 4X200 relay of Treyvon Matthews, Ryan Biddle-
