observations from the Director

It's spring and we are looking forward to our upcoming summer Tanglewood season in the Berkshires. In the meantime, we have had the opportunity to visit artists studios and choose new work as well as better understand what goes into the creative process.

Photo: Jim Schantz

In recent months, we have visited Dan Dailey and Linda MacNeil's Studios in New Hampshire, Jose Chardiet in Pawtucket, RI and Paul Stankard's Studio in Mantua, NJ. Last month we visited artists that we represent who work in Seattle including, Lino Tagliapietra, Dale Chihuly and Richard Marquis among many other important artists.* We feel very fortunate to represent these artists and that they are able to share their time with us to present their most current work. We have an obligation to our collectors to be the liaison for the artist. Our role is to gain better insight into the artists passion for their work and convey that to our clients.

What we have witnessed is the artists willingness to share their experience with us, our collectors, and with each other. It is this willingness to share that is essential to the evolution of the glass movement. On this trip, we also had the opportunity to select the best and most representative works to produce exhibitions for our gallery. We love what we are doing, sharing the passion for this great art with the audience and contributing to the advancement of the medium of glass as an art form. Exterior Fold Grouping, 2012 Opaline blown glass dimensions varied (tallest Bottle is 23.5”h, shortest vessel is 9”h)

Benjamin Moore’s solo show, "Translucent", is currently on display at Museum of Glass in Tacoma. Internationally recognized, Moore has been paring his style down for a while now, focusing on vessel forms that are, in his words, “simple, clean, with strength.” Now, even the barest hint of color is gone, the glass has become a translucent white. Simplicity and minimalist perfection in his glass vessels. Translucent presents a selection of Moore’s masterpieces that simultaneously evoke aspects of historical tradition with the refinement of a unique contemporary aesthetic.

Curated by Tina Oldknow, Masters of Studio Glass: Richard Marquis is part of the Corning Museum’s ongoing Masters of Studio Glass series developed to provide a platform for in-depth surveys of artists represented in the Museum’s permanent collection.

Presented for the first time in Canada, The Musee Des Beaux-Arts Montreal is presenting an exhibit of Dale Chihuly’s spellbinding environments created by his installations opening June 8 - October 20, 2013. The Morean Arts Center, is happy to announce Dale Chihuly’s return to St. Petersburg, Fla, and the arrival of a temporary new installation to the already phenomenal collection of Chihuly masterpieces. The Sealife Stoppers will be on view March 8 through June 30, 2013 at the Chihuly Collection.

Richard Marquis, glassblower and collector of beat-up, vintage objects, has had an extraordinary influence on the development of contemporary studio glass in America and around the world. His work is humorous, ironic, smart, and beautifully— some might say obsessively—made. As an artist, Marquis is admired for his understanding of color and form as much as for his humor and willingness to experiment. As a glassblower, he has influenced an entire generation of artists working in glass who aspire to his technical mastery and the originality of his vision. Through February 2014

· · · · · · · Preston Singletary is pleased to announce the completion of a monumental project, nearly 3 years in the making to date: a 7 foot tall 3-dimensional totem, weighing 2,000 pounds! Carving of the wooden totem began in 2011 and casting the glass in 2012. There were a few unsuccessful attempts to cast such a largescale work in the US, so Preston contacted his friend Charlie Parriott to assist with the project in the Czech Republic. After waiting three months for the heavy, thick glass to anneal, Preston traveled to Prague to see the totem in its finished state; the surface cleaning and retouching had been completed and the three sections assembled. The years of work have paid off to produce a magnificent, seven foot tall, 2000 pound glass totem, an homage to his grandmother and her pet grizzly bear cub. 413.298.3044 www.schantzgalleries.com

Botanical Anomaly from the Berkshire Series, 2013 5.75 x 2.5 x 2.5"

At the Renwick Museum, the career of Paul Stankard is the focus of an exhibition which has works that span more than four decades. At first glance his works appear to be simple paperweight forms. Upon closer inspection, one can see the painstakingly detailed, intricate botanical compositions, with roots that are often figurative. Stankard, who cites the poetry of James Joyce and Walt Whitman as inspiration for his miniature representations of North American wild flowers, meticulously lampworks each piece in sections that are then encased in clear glass. · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · Ethan Stern made this piece in Japan last fall during his residency at the Toyama Institute of Glass. "Sentakuita" is a Japanese term referring to a traditional washboard. The work will be exhbited at Wheaton Glass: The Art of the Fellowship, through December 31, 2013. Curated by Tina Aufiero and Dianne Wright. Among the other artists exhibited are David Walters and Hiroshi Yamano.
