INSIDE LOOK: The Whimbrel

Does your home need a warm weather refresh? With summer just around the corner, it’s time to swap out your throw pillows and spruce up your home with a touch of color. In this issue of At Home with Schell Brothers, designer Susan Herring helps us showcase The Whimbrel at Peninsula Lakes, a home that will undoubtedly inspire you to add new energy to your living space!

As a five-time award winner and our second best selling floor plan, The Whimbrel has proven to be a favorite among our buyers. Now in its third version, the home has been thoughtfully modified and beautifully updated based on valuable customer feedback.

The functional floor plan encompasses three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a flex room, along with your choice of six unique exterior elevations. Those looking for additional personalization may transform this ranch-style home into a three-level living space with six bedrooms and four baths.

Featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that span the entire back of the home, The Whimbrel welcomes you into a living area flooded with natural light. Optional vaulted ceilings and white beams contribute to the open, airy atmosphere. The natural connection with the outdoors continues on a beautifully appointed courtyard that overlooks the pond.

Great Room

Similar to our other floor plans, The Whimbrel offers a spacious, two-foot rear extension that expands the great room, dining area, and primary bedroom. Still want more space? Add a two-foot side extension for an even roomier great room. A popular accompaniment for the added space is an inset fireplace with built-ins on either side. Here, Susan chose to showcase crisp, white cabinetry and a contemporary fireplace with an Arctic Gray marble surround. “I wanted to keep everything light and bright in the great room so the kitchen would be the standout in this openconcept plan,” explained Susan.

Centrally located, the kitchen undeniably sets the stage for this home, featuring Sapphire cabinets, a new blue finish offered by Wellborn. “To offset the bold blue, I added bright, white cabinets to the command center, so the perimeter cabinets would be the showstopper in the space,” said Susan. But let’s pause for a second to swoon over the gorgeous matte white appliances with brushed bronze hardware that complete the sophisticated look. A dining table with a marble top and brass accents is a perfect complement to the bold colors in the dining room rug and blue credenza. “I stumbled on the blue credenza at the High Point Furniture Market and knew it was very close to the kitchen cabinets’ Sapphire finish,” said Susan. “When staging the model, I was excited to see that it was a perfect match.”

While staying true to her palette in the primary suite, Susan chose colors that promote relaxation. “Soft blue walls are a welcoming feature in the primary suite and are re-introduced on the tile in the primary bath,” said Susan. In addition to the spacious bedroom, Luxury Suite 2 includes two oversized walk-in closets, an impressively large shower—truly magazine worthy—and dual vanities with an option for additional cabinetry.

While two additional bedrooms and a flex room are located on the first floor, those expecting frequent weekend guests may want to consider adding a second level. Our model showcases an additional bedroom and a bathroom as well as a common space for your guests or kids to have a gathering area of their own.

Since it’s always nice to have some extra room, we decided two floors just weren’t enough. Here, the basement functions as a bonus space for entertaining or bingewatching your favorite shows, especially when you don’t want to wake the kiddos. Complete with a full bar and separate lounge and game areas, this well-designed living space is proof that there’s no better way to bring out the inner child in you than to outfit your basement with an upscale ping pong table!

One of the first words that came to mind when we entered The Whimbrel was: jovial. Susan’s color palette and décor are cheerful yet tasteful, bold yet livable. We love the sophistication that this home embodies while still being fun and playful. It’s a fresh new look that you won’t want to miss!
