Garden One

Stonewalling in Ferris Provincial Park CAROL ROBERTSON 474 County Road 8 Campbellford

Ontario Parks and the Friends of Ferris welcome you to our beautiful park.

Park staff will greet you at the Gate House (which is just off County Road 8, south of Campbellford). You will need to show your Garden Tour passport to the park employee. The driver then turns right and proceeds on the park road to the next opportunity to turn left. There, parking will be signed, and the host will be at a pop-up tent at the 'stone stile' corner.

At this point, Carol Robertson will meet you and talk about the history of the 16 kilometres of existing stone walls that are more than one hundred years old. Appreciate the efforts made in rebuilding thirty metres of walls which had deteriorated. Even consider the possibilities of creating a stone feature in your own garden. Our 10th annual restoration/demonstration project will be this August.

Garden Two

Gardening in our Golden Years

HOWARD & CATHY MCCANN Homac Acres Inc., 70 McCann Road Codrington Stop and see what a husband and wife duo have created in their semi-retirement from dairy and cattle farming. With some knowledge of growing plants and a love of flowers, gardening seems to be a good fit. Now that there is free time to more fully engage in our hobby, everyone is welcome to observe our labour of love.

With no grand garden plan but lots of curiosity and enthusiasm to try new plants, the flower beds have gradually expanded and evolved over the years. Newly discovered plants were brought home and then it was decided where to plant them. Last year, a vintage farm wagon was rescued and filled with multiple layers of petunias and trailing vines where it became the focal point of the front lawn. Situated on a corner lot of approximately two acres, there is lots to see, even from the road and there is no hidden 'back yard'. Although nothing is particularly fancy or ornate, the gardens are diverse, colourful and expansive. We invite you to stop and take a stroll around the property, as the gardens continue to be a work in progress. Enjoy a snack with coffee and weather permitting, a small quilt display. We look forward to welcoming you and we hope you enjoy the tour.

Garden Three True North Daylillies

TIM HOBBS & DONNA PASS 59 Hutchinson Road Warkworth Daylillies at True North range in the thousands (actually 35,000 and growing) with each one being unique. Mother Nature selects those that will flourish, ensuring that any plants you buy will be hardy and provide many years of enjoyment. If you wish to buy some while you are here, feel free to do so. Your selections will be freshly dug, bagged and ready for their new home. Otherwise, just browse around and enjoy this treat to your eyes. A large selection of named hosta plants are also for sale if you are interested. There are lots to pick from, ranging in size from small to large and having interesting patterns. Visitors will also find numerous sun and shade-loving perennials along with an ornamental pond and other interesting features spread over two acres.

Come and visit. Take time to walk among the daylillies and leisurely stroll through the gardens.

Garden Four Schoolhouse Gardens

DENNIS & TOM 404 Concession 3 West Warkworth A hidden gem known as Schoolhouse Gardens invites everyone to experience an enchanting stroll through a whimsical park-like garden. As members of the Canadian Peony Society, Dennis and Tom have a vast collection of peonies numbering over 350 varieties, including a rare collection known as the Gilbert Collection. These peonies give six weeks of bloom. Dennis and Tom have won many ribbons with their blooms at the Annual Peony Festival in Oshawa and at the Annual Canadian Peony Festival. Schoolhouse Gardens also contains a vast collection of hosta and daylillies interplanted with perennials, shrubs and trees. You will notice many statues and artifacts collected over the years.

With their farming background, Dennis and Tom have created the Schoolhouse Gardens with the theme "English Country" and a controlled/uncontrolled look. Since this isn't a 'botanical' garden, all plants will not be named as the garden is in constant change. Please enjoy your stroll through Dennis and Tom's four acre site. No smoking on site and no pets allowed.

Garden Five

Wonderland on Mahoney Road

TERESA DAVIES & DENISE MCDONALD 66 Mahoney Road Trent Hills We had our house built ten years ago. When we moved in, we decided to 'pretty up' the landscape. We started around the pine tree on the east side of the property. We put in a hosta garden, then decided to extend it, putting in a small walkway with a yellow magnolia and continued all the way up the driveway. The 'wow' factor of this garden is the fairy garden behind the house, as well as all the 'surprises' you will find tucked in here and there. Enjoy this garden!

Garden Six Rural Paradise

BART & GERTI CRASHLEY 90 Goacher Road Meyersburg After many moves, I was very tired of leaving my gardens behind. So when we came here ten years ago, I tried to dig up and bring as much as possible with me. Some plants handled the challenge and stress of being uprooted, some didn't. The apricot tree hasn't had a fruit on it yet, and gets threatened by my husband every year. When the little cherry tree has fruit on it, the birds usually get there first and don't share with me. The red, white and pink currant bushes seem to be very happy and give more than we can eat each year. There are snowdrops in my spring garden that come from my hometown in Austria, along with two still very young walnut trees grown from walnuts out of my mom's garden near Salzburg. There is a huge catalpa tree beside the garage, and a couple of smaller ones here and there grown from some of the huge seed pods. The two larches on each side of the driveway were planted at the same time. Why one is five times bigger than the other, no one knows.

The dappled willow is doing so well out by the road, I planted a second one on the other side of the driveway along with a cranberry bush, a magnolia and a ginkgo tree. But best of all is still the beautiful view we have of the creek with all sorts of wildlife around it, and the hill with cows out on pasture in the summer. I hope you'll enjoy it.
