National Park & Recreation Month

SPRING/SUMMER 2018

FROM THE DIRECTOR

We are excited to launch our first ever Schertz Parks & Recreation FUN Guide to highlight all of the exciting events and amazing recreational opportunities we have here in Schertz. Through our partnership with the YMCA, we offer an indoor Recreation Center with fitness equipment, group exercise classes, a rock climbing wall and so much more. Right next door is our new Aquatic Center, which celebrated its one year anniversary in January 2018. With two pools and numerous aquatic programming opportunities, this 19,000 sq. foot state of the art facility is something that Schertz residents should be proud of. Don’t forget to get out and explore all of our park properties highlighted on pages 16-21. Each location has different amenities, including two outdoor pools, and there is something for everyone. If a more natural experience is appealing to you and your family, check out the programs we have offered at Crescent Bend Nature Park – Bird Walks, Star Parties, and the Nature Discovery Series for children are just some of the fun things we have planned. Finally, July is National Park & Recreation Month, and this year’s theme is “A Lifetime of Discovery” highlighting that parks and recreation are more than just playgrounds and rec centers. Our department offers senior programs, innovative health and wellness opportunities, sports fields, aquatic complexes, community celebrations, nature education, miles of trails, flood mitigation, maintenance, and much, much more. “A Lifetime of Discovery” awaits at your local parks and recreation facility! ENTERTAINMENT

SPECIAL EVENTS

AT A PARK NEAR YOU

4

Schertz Parks & Recreation is excited for another great year of movies and concerts in the park. Families and friends are invited out to one – or all – of this year’s great events for a day of fun for the whole family.

The Music and Movies in the Park series showcases a variety of live bands and movies and was established by the Schertz Parks and Recreation Department back in 2016 as an initiative to get the community to come out and enjoy their local parks. We encourage everyone to bring lawn chairs, refreshments, friends, and neighbors out for a free day of entertainment. This year’s schedule will include six feature movies and two live music events at different area parks. For more information, go to Schertz.com or follow the City of Schertz on Facebook.

NATURE EDUCATION

WHY NATURE EDUCATION?

Research shows that children are spending hours on electronic devices and less and less time outdoors, with detrimental effects to their health. Getting kids outdoors and learning about the natural world has been shown to reduce health risks such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, and ADHD, while fostering the next generation of environmental stewards. So get outdoors as a family and explore the natural world!

FRIENDS OF CRESCENT BEND NATURE PARK

The Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park is a group of volunteers who have a passion for the park and help the Parks & Recreation Department maintain the park through volunteer service hours. The group organizes volunteer clean up days, maintains the bird blinds, documents flora and fauna in the park, and volunteers at various park events throughout the year. If you’re interested in joining the Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park, see their website at www.friendscbnp.zenfolio.com.

PARK DEVELOPMENT

PARK DEVELOPMENT

The City of Schertz strives to continue developing the areas around the City with more beautiful parks and facilities. With the growth of the City's population, the Parks and Recreation Department has many future projects.

MARY WHITFIELD BURKS PARK 3175 Schertz Parkway

Park Development plans include a 220-foot long, 10foot wide spur trail off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the oak trees and back on to the parkway. Outdoor fitness equipment will be installed along the trail for runners and walkers to expand their workout on their regular exercise route. Seven different pieces of equipment are included in the development: recumbent cycle, cardio walker, chest press, leg extension, high-low chin up bars, balance board, and a captain’s chair. Also included in the park is an accessible drinking fountain with pet bowl, a bench, a trash can, and park signage.

COMMUNITY PLAYSCAPE RESTROOM ADDITION 629 Westchester Dr.

The Community Playscape is a heavily-used park, primarily by families with small children, and a restroom facility was badly needed. Funding was budgeted in the FY 16-17 budget, and a grant from GVEC was additionally secured to fund the project. Construction of the restroom is taking place off-site at Corworth Restroom Facilities in Marble Falls, Texas. The pre-engineered building is expected to be delivered to the site in March 2018 and hooked up to the utilities that are being extended prior to its arrival. It will be ready for use by park patrons before the busy summer season gets underway.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018

WENDY SWAN MEMORIAL PARK POOL UPGRADES 4601 Cherry Tree Dr.

The department completed a cosmetic renovation of the Pickrell Pool office and bathhouse and added a beautiful mural in FY 16-17, so it was planned in FY 17-18 to complete a cosmetic renovation of the Wendy Swan Memorial Park Pool office and bathhouse as well. New paint, windows, office desks, restroom fixtures, outdoor showers, and pool lounge chairs were added. A mural in the same vein as the one at Pickrell Pool is also planned for the site to be ready for the 2018 summer season.

SCHERTZ EXERCISE TRAIL Community Circle Dr.

Schertz Parks and Recreation Department received a Trail Grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to establish a 10-foot wide decomposed granite trail along Dietz Creek and Community Circle Drive directly behind the city campuses. The trail route will go behind the Schertz Ballpark, cross the ditch to the Clemens High School side (via pedestrian bridge) and follow Dietz Creek behind the Post Office to Elbel Rd. Trail users will then connect to the sidewalk on Elbel and cross the bridge to the other side of Dietz Creek and continue up the other side of the creek past the County Annex Building. The trail will then route up the alley behind The Estates at Wilson’s Preserve neighborhood and to Live Oak Road where it will connect to new sidewalks along Live Oak Road. Anticipated trail completion is June 2018.

SCHERTZ PEDESTRIAN ROUTES & BIKE LANES PROJECT City-Wide

PARK DEVELOPMENT

This exciting project for the Schertz community will install $1.1 million worth of trails, sidewalks and bike lanes throughout Central Schertz. A 10-foot wide decomposed granite trail is planned off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the LCRA easement roughly parallel to Wiederstein Road and connects to the established trail in Forest Ridge Park. The second part of the project includes striping compliant bike lanes (proper width, proper signage and striping) on both sides of Savannah Drive from the Selma/Schertz city limits to FM 3009. Bicycle traffic in this area is heavy due to the elementary and intermediate schools along Savannah Drive. Compliant bike lanes will also be added to Woodland Oaks Drive from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. The third component of the project is to install sidewalks along both sides of Live Oak Road from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. This will complete a much-needed connection for pedestrians between two-highly utilized corridors through the city.
