Welcome to the 3rd edition of our Schertz Parks & Recreation FUN Guide —an award winning publication! The 2019 Spring/Summer Guide received an Award of Honor from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO), and we are so excited to bring you the first ever Fall/ Winter Guide. We hope you find the information helpful in planning the fall and winter months for your family. Have you ever swam in a pool full of 200 pumpkins? Now’s your chance! Join us at the Schertz Aquatics Center on October 5 for Dunkin’ for Pumpkins where participants can choose their own pumpkin out of the pool to paint and take home. The Halloween themed fun continues with Trunk or Treat scheduled for October 26 at Pickrell Park. A trick or treat trail with local businesses handing out candy, hayrides, face painting and other games for the kids are all part of the event. Dads and daughters need to mark their calendars for February 21 for the 2nd Annual Daddy Daughter Dance at the Schertz Civic Center. We will go “Under the Sea” for the evening and may even spot a few mermaids! New to the guide this Fall/Winter, is some information on exciting programs happening at the Schertz Public Library. Be sure to check out what our friends are doing at the library on pages 20-23! Finally, don’t forget to get out and explore all of our park properties highlighted on pages 18-19. Each location has different amenities, including two outdoor pools, and there is something for everyone. We hope you have FUN exploring everything your Schertz Parks & Recreation Department has to offer! Lauren Shrum, Director of Schertz Parks & Recreation

PARK DEVELOPMENT SCHERTZ PEDESTRIAN ROUTES & BIKE LANES PROJECT

The City of Schertz strives to continue developing the areas around the City with more beautiful parks and facilities. With the growth of the City's population, the Parks & Recreation Department has many future projects.

City-wide

VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PLAZA PAVER RENOVATION 512 Schertz Parkway

HERITAGE OAKS PARK 11700 Longleaf Parkway

ASHLEY PARK RENOVATION 534 Ashley Park Dr

COMPLETED! The renovation project for Ashley Park was completed over the summer and a Grand Re-Opening was held on July 31. Aging play equipment was replaced with a new double-net climbing structure, new Expression swing, and a new gaga ball pit – all 3 of these amenities are the first of their kind in Schertz parks! The old asphalt basketball court was also demolished and a new concrete court was constructed. Accessible sidewalks to new features were added, the restroom was renovated, and the existing soccer field was re-graded and re-oriented to create 2 practice soccer fields.

PARK DEVELOPMENT

The City of Schertz applied for a 100% matching grant through the TRAPS/ GameTime/PlayCore Statewide Funding Initiative and was awarded the grant in May. The City of Schertz is one of 25 grants awarded throughout the state, and our playscape structure was awarded two national demonstration site designations: “NatureGrounds” and the “PlayOn! Promoting Physical Activity.” Once the playscape structure is installed, PlayCore will be collecting data at the park as part of their national initiative to demonstrate the physical, social, and emotional benefits of play. The data will be presented at the 2020 Texas Recreation & Park Society Annual Institute in Galveston, TX. The playscape includes several slides, a butterfly climber, interactive and cooperative play panels, swings, and a spinning seat. An accessible trail will also be constructed at the park to connect the playscape to the existing parking and picnic areas.

Many of the pavers at the plaza have engraving that is wearing away and are in need of replacement and reengraving. This project will remove the existing pavers, re-install newly engraved pavers to replace those that were removed, and will install a new batch of purchased pavers from residents who have been on a waiting list. In addition the granite pedestals will be re-engraved and landscaping will be refreshed. The project is expected to be completed in October 2019.

This exciting project for the Schertz community will install $1.1 million worth of trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes throughout Central Schertz. A 10-foot wide decomposed granite trail is planned off of Schertz Parkway that meanders through the LCRA easement roughly parallel to Wiederstein Road and connects to the established trail in Forest Ridge Park. The second part of the project includes striping compliant bike lanes (proper width, proper signage and striping) on both sides of Savannah Drive from the Selma/ Schertz city limits to FM 3009. Bicycle traffic in this area is heavy due to the elementary and intermediate schools along Savannah Drive. Compliant bike lanes will also be added to Woodland Oaks Drive from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. The third component of the project is to install sidewalks along both sides of Live Oak Road from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. This will complete a much-needed connection for pedestrians between two-highly utilized corridors through the city. The project is nearing the end of design phase with the project scheduled to go out to bid this winter.

SCHERTZ PARKS

PARKS

Since its beginning in 1958, the City of Schertz has maintained, at the forefront, its desire to focus on the quality of life enjoyed by our residents. Planned parks, natural parks, sports facilities, pavilions and family gathering places, hike and bike trails, safe pedestrians ways, fitness facilities, swimming facilities and social gathering places are all part of a large picture that meets the needs of our community.

ASHLEY PARK

CUT-OFF PARK

This 5-acre neighborhood park is a great place for families to play on the playground, practice soccer, or enjoy a pick-up game of basketball. Renovated in 2019, this park now includes a double tower net-climbing structure, an expression swing, and a gaga ball pit – all the first of their kind in Schertz!

This 58-acre park features lots of open space, heritage-sized oak trees, and trailhead access to six miles of Cibolo Creek Primitive Trails. No motorized vehicles are permitted.

534 Ashley Park

GUTIERREZ XERISCAPE PARK

HERITAGE OAKS PARK

This 2-acre park features multiple garden areas beautifully maintained by the Guadalupe Master Gardeners volunteer group. The gazebo area is perfect for photo opportunities, and a shaded and lighted walking trail encircles the park.

This 13-acre park is a truly unique site, with hundreds of heritage-sized oak and cedar elm trees. This park offers a tranquil walking path through the woods, picnic facilities, and a picturesque pond.

This 17-acre park offers something for everyone. From basketball to swimming to playscapes to walking trails, we’ve fit it all in at this busy community park. Picnic pavilions are available by reservation, including the Large Pavilion for large groups with kitchen and private bathroom facilities. The park is also home to many city events and festivals throughout the year.

CYPRESS POINT PARK 5526 Cypress Point

This 10-acre neighborhood park features a playscape, walking trail, and lots of open space for families to toss a football around or play a game of Frisbee. Parking, benches, and a water fountain round out the amenities.

LONE OAK PARK

100 Block of Rountree Dr

This 0.34-acre neighborhood pocket park use to be home to a majestic lone oak right in the center of the park. While the lone oak is gone, the name remains the same and several other large oaks shade some benches in this small tranquil spot.

FALL 2019 / WINTER 2020

FOREST RIDGE PARK 17529 Wiederstein Rd

This 14-acre park features an almost hidden trail through a linear forested area that many walkers and runners utilize. The trail connects to the FM 3009 sidewalks and will have a future connection to the Schertz Parkway Trails.

MARY WHITFIELD BURKS PARK 3175 Schertz Parkway

This 2-acre park is just off Schertz Parkway and can only be accessed on foot or by bicycle off of the Schertz Parkway trails. The small pocket park has outdoor fitness equipment and a drinking fountain for runners and walkers to get a short workout in along their regular exercise route.

CRESCENT BEND NATURE PARK

SCHERTZ COMMUNITY PLAYSCAPE

This 180-acre park is a nature lover’s paradise. Miles of trails, blooming wildflowers, and picnic facilities are just some of what make this park special. Check out the two bird blinds in the park where rare bird species have been spotted or head down to the Cibolo Creek for some fishing.

This 1-acre park is all about play with multiple play structures, swings, merry go round, and accessible features. A new restroom building makes it a destination park for the community. A water fountain, benches, Story Walk Trail, and ample parking round out the amenities.

This small 2-acre pocket park borders Cibolo Creek and is mostly open space. The park is being developed by Eagle Scouts into a Scout Day Use Area. Phase I included picnic tables and parking which are open for use.

This 5-acre neighborhood park offers a picnic pavilion with BBQ grills, playscape, walking trail, sport court, and soccer fields. It’s the perfect spot for the family to play a pick-up basketball game on the court or bring a picnic lunch to enjoy.

This 0.60-acre park is not only for the dogs, but for the owners too. Benches allow the people to socialize while the dogs socialize too. Multiple fountains and small dog areas make the space multifunctional for pet owners.

SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY

FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR Welcome to the Library’s section of the Fall/Winter Parks & Recreation FUN Guide! A big thank you to the Parks Department for sharing space with us so we, in turn, can share information with you on some of our upcoming programming and notable services. We have several reading-related programs and challenges that will take place in the fall and winter. In January and February, our Winter Reading Club will take you on a reading adventure in and out of various businesses around the community. Our Book Nerd Challenge for ages 5-adult encourages participants to read 25 books a year in genres that get readers out of their comfort zone. The 2019 Challenge will be wrapping up at the end of January and the 2020 Challenge will begin in February. We also have an early literacy initiative called 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten which encourages parents to read aloud with their children during the critical developmental ages prior to starting school. On October 12, we will be promoting the works of authors from the community with our 4th annual Local Author Fair. Participating authors will be on hand to give a short presentation and answer questions about their works. In addition to reading programs, the library has many exceptional electronic resources for patrons to utilize and enjoy. Especially pertinent during the back-to-school season is Brainfuse HelpNow, an all-inone suite of tutoring services designed for a wide range of academic needs. Expert tutors, including Spanish-speaking tutors, are available online from 2:00-11:00 p.m. each day. Also, the library recently added streaming films to our collection. Library card holders can access the service, called Kanopy, and stream up to 10 films per month. Visit our online calendar at schertzlibrary.org for a full schedule of monthly programs and for more information on the many resources available to you with your Schertz Pubic Library card. Have questions? You can contact the library at (210) 619-1700 or at librarian@schertz.com. We look forward to seeing you soon! Melissa Uhlhorn, Library Director

How to Get a Library Card Any Texas resident with a photo ID and current proof of residence (i.e. a utility bill) may apply for a fullservice card, free of charge. If your proof of residence is different from your photo ID, your name must appear on the proof of residence to be valid. P.O. boxes are not acceptable as proof of residence. Children under 18 may apply for a card as long as they can write their name and a parent with a photo ID and proof of residence is present to sign the card. The library also has digital access cards and TexShare cards. Visit the “How Do I...” tab at schertzlibrary.org to learn about the various cards available.

WINTER READING EXPRESS

Hop on the Winter Reading Express with us this January and February. The Winter Reading Express is scheduled to begin its journey with a special event on Saturday, January 11! Once your train ticket is complete, submit it to the library before 6:00 p.m. on February 15 to be entered in to the grand prize drawing. There will also be weekly prize drawings throughout the program.

LOCAL AUTHOR FAIR Join us for a Local Author Fair at the Schertz Public Library! Selected authors will share a little about themselves, their work, and their writing process. Following the author presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to visit with and purchase books from the authors.
