About Our Magazine Schertz Magazine is a monthly popular lifestyle/entertainment/ community events publication wholly owned and operated by the City of Schertz and produced internally by the Schertz Public Affairs Department. It serves as the primary dissemination source for government information for a growing city of over 42,000 residents. Today, Schertz Magazine is the leading publication in the Tri-County area with a circulation of 16,000 copies; including 14,000+ direct mailed and 500+ subscriptions from Austin through San Antonio and around the country (including dozens of out-of-state readers). The magazine is mailed to 15,000+ local households and over 1,000 businesses with hundreds of copies made available at local and regional banks, hospitals and clinics, schools, pharmacies, and restaurants.

CITY MANAGER Hello Schertz. Happy November. I am really excited about the magazine issue this month as we take a look at many topics of interest to the community. First, I hope you had the opportunity to early vote, but if not, I wanted to remind everyone that election day is Tuesday, November 2. I want to wish all our veterans a Happy Veteran’s Day on November 11 and remind the community we will have a very nice Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Schertz Veterans Memorial Plaza at 9:00 a.m. featuring the commander of Air Education and Training Command, Lieutenant General Brad Webb, as our speaker. We sincerely appreciate the outstanding service and sacrifice provided by our veterans! With that in mind, the magazine features a wonderful article on how the VFW is involved in our community and gives back to all of us. These outstanding folks have served our country under adverse conditions and are now active in numerous community activities which is very much appreciated. Another article in the magazine features the Historical Landmarks/ Heritage Neighborhoods program which is conducted by the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee. This program seeks to recognize important locations within the City that promote and preserve the history and heritage of Schertz. The Historical Preservation Committee does a fantastic job ensuring our community’s history will be recognized by future generations of residents. We are getting close to the holiday season, and I also would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving this year! I hope you have time to celebrate this wonderful time with friends and family. Following Thanksgiving, we will have a few exciting events for the public. First, on December 2 at 6:00 p.m., we will have the annual Deck the City Hall tree lighting ceremony which is always a festive occasion. Then, we will have our annual Holidazzle events on December 4 featuring Breakfast with Santa in the Civic Center along with a Christmas bazaar and fun outdoor activities in the afternoon with a snow hill and snow play area, music, food, and other activities. It is always a great time. In the evening the activities conclude with our annual Festival of Angels parade down Main Street and Schertz Parkway. We hope you will make plans to attend these events. Thanks to our residents for all you do to make Schertz a wonderful place to live, work and play. We are fortunate to live in such a fantastic community.

EMS Honors Fallen Providers Each year in May the National EMS Memorial Bike Ride hits the East Coast to honor and celebrate the lives of those who serve the public with emergency medical services every day. This year, the ride was delayed due to increased numbers in the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual long-distance cycling event memorializes EMS providers who have fallen ill or injured while performing their duties, made a significant impact in the EMS field, and those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The sevenday 565-mile journey is not for the faint of heart and traveled through Connecticut and Pennsylvania from Boston, MA to Washington, D.C. In 2021 four Schertz EMS employees (Brandon Hill, Tyler Bowker, Mike Shown, and Ashley Cammack) took the challenge and completed the Bike Ride (September 19 - 25) in honor of some very special public safety servants. Schertz EMS Division Chief - Operations, Brandon Hill commented, "This year was extremely challenging, both for the logistics of the ride and for the ride itself. The ride really resembled the struggles of the past year and a half; a lot of rough terrains, fighting to overcome adversity, and celebrating and honoring those who we lost.” Every year, there are five different routes to complete for the bike ride, the East Coast (Boston to Washington, D.C.), Southern (North Carolina to Washington, D.C.), Midwest (St. Paul to Chicago), Colorado (Snowmass to Littleton), and West Coast (Reno to San Francisco) routes. All five routes rode simultaneously this year. Due to the high number of honorees, each route honored those lost from their respective regions. Since our EMS employees rode the East Coast route, their honorees are from that area. Hill rode for Randy Templin from Northwest EMS in Elizabethtown, PA, Bowker rode for Jonathan Damon from Tupper Lake EMS in New York, Shown rode for Rachel Cunningham from Survival Flight in Ohio, and Cammack rode for Brittney Jayne from Kingman EMS in Kansas.
“It was a rewarding experience to ride with this amazing group of people for such a great cause,” said Cammack. “Memorializing these fallen men and women who dedicated their lives to helping others in some form of EMS is just an emotional experience that’s so hard to explain. Every mile, was for our honorees. I rode this year for Brittney Jayne, who passed away in April of 2020 after battling cancer. She was a beloved EMT with Kingman EMS in Kansas. She was only one year younger than me and also had dreams of being a paramedic. Wearing her dogtags around my neck was like a burst of strength every time I felt like wanting to quit.” Usually held in May, the National EMS Memorial Service was held on July 24 due to COVID restrictions. The memorial service honored 144 line-of-duty deaths this year by a ringing of a bell, and a presentation of a yellow rose and American Flag to the family. These honorees will forever have their names on the EMS Tree of Life Memorial, and eventually at a permanent memorial in Washington, D.C.

Santa’s elves are cooking away to bring you a magical Breakfast with Santa. Warm and delicious pancakes and sausage will be served. The Kris Kringle Market offers a unique shopping experience of hand-made crafts, specialty food items, and independent consultant products. The market will be open from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Schertz Civic Center. The snow and ice sure will be plentiful at the Holiday Hoopla! Activities include the Mt. Schertz snow hill and snow angel play area, which will provide plenty of great photo opportunities! These attractions open at 2:00 p.m. and are FREE for all ages. Holly Jolly Entertainment will be held throughout the grounds of the McDow Sports Complex. While you enjoy the entertainment, make sure to check out the Fireside Toasting & Roasting food trucks for a special treat! The community favorite Festival of Angels lighted night parade will dazzle the crowds lined along Schertz Parkway and Main St. The parade steps off at 6:00 p.m. from Pickrell Park and concludes on Community Circle Dr. Food and craft vendors and those interested in participating in the parade can register at Schertz.com/ Holidazzle on CivicRec. FUN AT DUNKIN FOR PUMPKINS
The 4th annual Dunkin’ for Pumpkins event took place at the Schertz natatorium on October 2. Families pre-registered for the event for one of two age-appropriate sessions and 190 signed up to participate in this year’s event. Pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colors were dunked into the pool at the Schertz Aquatics Center where kids and their parents could then swim around and pick the perfect one to take home. Half the fun was bobbing and splashing around before visiting one of the outdoor pumpkin decorating stations. There, kiddos could paint and add stickers to customize their special selections and Halloween-themed games were also open to enjoy as both the creations and the kids dried off. The sponsors who helped make this year’s floating pumpkin patch happen were Schertz Parks & Recreation, Schertz YMCA, Raising Cane’s, local realtor Iris Gonzales, the Schertz Public Library, and Alamo Children’s Heart Center.

ED-ZOO-CATION BACK IN 2022
The third in the series, the September 25 Ed-ZOO-cation event was held at Crescent Bend Nature Park. Zoo and Conservation staff, along with members of the Animal Ambassador team, shared how they came to be part of the staff and industry. From growing up with animals to taking in a dog who didn’t make the cut in a rescue program, a love of animals ranks at the top. Thanks to the Center for Conservation and Research at the San Antonio Zoo, area families learned about the Texas Horn Lizard Reintroduction Project and got to meet some interesting characters. Did you know anteaters like avocados? Attendees learned this and more about Mr. Hogan, a 5-year-old tamandua (small South American anteater). Joining the fun were two horned lizards, a blue-tongue skink, and Twig, a 16-year-old screech owl. The Ed-ZOO-cation series will return in 2022. Stay tuned for information on the program.

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN The Schertz Public Library & the Schertz-Cibolo Lions Club have partnered to offer an early literacy initiative called 1,000 Books before Kindergarten. This project encourages parents to read aloud at least 1,000 books with their children before they enter school. Register your child online or at the Children’s Information Desk to receive a free tote bag and the first reading log. NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS (NAMI) FAMILY AND FRIENDS SEMINAR NAMI Family and Friends is a free 4-hour seminar that informs and supports family members, partners, friends, and significant others who have loved ones with a mental health condition. Participants will learn about diagnoses, treatment, recovery, communication strategies, crisis preparation, and NAMI resources. Join us for our brand new exercise program at the library Qigong for adults 18+ with local certified instructor, Jennifer Eash. The program will be held Monday, November 15 from 10 – 10:45 a.m. in the library courtyard. What is Qigong? Pronounced "chee gong", it is an ancient Chinese practice inspired by nature. Qigong means "energy skill" or "energy work", and is an extremely diverse practice that helps you develop skills in working with your own energy, expanding your self-awareness of your connection to yourself, other people, and the world around you. We will be using gentle, guided, standing practices, combining breath with movement, to remove old energy and bring in fresh energy, supporting you in developing more strength, resilience, agility, and focus. Schertz/Seguin Local Government Corporation Announces Hiring Of New Operations Manager Amber Briggs Beard, General Manager of the Schertz/Seguin Local Government Corporation (SSLGC) is pleased to announce that Daniel Myers, P.E. has joined the organization as the new Operations Manager. Mr. Myers will be a key member of SSLGC’s senior leadership team and responsible for the supervision and management of the dayto-day operations of SSLGC’s wellfields, water treatment plants, storage facilities, and transmission mains. “We are excited to welcome Dan to our team at SSLGC,” said Beard. “He has extensive knowledge in the water utility industry and will serve an important role as the SSLGC water system continues to grow.” Mr. Myers has over 27 years of water utility experience with the San Antonio Water System (SAWS), utility construction experience with Mission Contractors, water transmission experience with Northwest Pipe Company, and thermal utility experience with the thermal utility district at SAWS. Mr. Myers holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin and is a Licensed Professional Engineer. Mr. Myers is married with a daughter and four sons.

Sewer Averaging
Sewer averaging for the winter months begins November 1, 2021, and will continue through March 15, 2022, for cycle billing. Water usage over this period determines your sewer charge for the next billing year, which begins April 1. The water usage readings will be averaged and the average per thousand-gallon usage per month will be multiplied by $4.75. The final calculation result will be your sewer charge for the next 12 months. If you get your bill on the 10th day of the month your calculation period will be November 1 to March 1 and if you get your bill on the 25th day your period will be November 15 to March 15.

Schertz Launches Small Business Grant Program On Friday, October 1, applications officially opened for the Schertz Small Business Grant Program. This grant program was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). The City of Schertz will be awarded a total of $10,417,416.86 from ARPA. This amount will be delivered in two equal disbursements or tranches and will equate to $5,208,708.43 per tranche. As outlined in Resolution 21-R-85, the First Tranche Disbursement of Funds includes Category 2 whereby $1,000,000 has been allocated for small businesses to addresses negative economic impacts caused by the public health emergency. Per the Federal grant guidelines, the applicant is required to explain the losses the business experienced since the beginning of
the pandemic (March 2020) as well as provide documentation of said loss. The applicant will also be required to explain what the grant funds would be used for by briefly describing expenditures or proposed expenditures and providing documentation. Applications will be accepted ONLINE ONLY from Friday, October 1, 2021 through Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. (No late submissions will be accepted). Businesses must physically be located within the Schertz city limits. Clean Streets and Falling Leaves The fall season means football, pumpkin spice, sweater weather… and fallen leaves accumulating on City streets. Regular street sweeping is an effective way to remove leaves and litter before the debris clogs storm drains or is washed into waterways by rainfall, polluting our creeks and rivers. Our street sweepers clean about 163 miles of street each month in the City of Schertz. In order to maintain all of the roadways and assist our street sweepers, the City asks that residents do not dump, push, sweep, or blow yard waste, including leaves, tree limbs, or brush into City streets or right of ways. To remove leaves from the streets, sidewalks, and driveways, residents should blow or sweep leaves into the yard and mulch them or compost them. The street sweeper also needs height clearance to sweep freely throughout the city streets. So that the street sweeper can safely pass through the street and clean near the curbs, please ensure your

VFW Generously Serves Community By: Kira Villarreal
V
eterans of Foreign Wars, Cibolo Valley Post 8315 celebrated an important milestone this year. August 2021 marked the 75th anniversary of the post, which was activated on August 30, 1946, with 45 chartered members and 17 auxiliary members. The purpose of the VFW organization is to support veterans and their families, including advocating for veterans’ rights and benefits, assisting veterans and their families through the Veterans Affairs Program and numerous local programs and services. At a celebration that took place in August, the post was recognized by VFW National Headquarters for its milestone anniversary and its service to the military community. Schertz Mayor Ralph Gutierrez served as the keynote speaker and more than 80 VFW members and community members attended. The State of Texas has 25 VFW districts, and Cibolo Valley Post 8315 is one of 14 posts in District 5 (also known as the ‘Fighting Fifth’), which includes the cities of Schertz and Bulverde and the area north to Buda. The post has grown substantially since its early days and currently has 425 members, making it the largest post in District 5. The current membership is diverse, including men and women from ages 20 to more than 90 years of age from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and areas. To qualify for membership in the VFW, an individual must provide proof of having participated in a conflict, flown over or in support of a conflict, or have been stationed in a hostile environment. The post also has an Auxiliary, the members

of which are immediate family members of VFW members. The auxiliary is instrumental in helping with the many community service activities and events of the post. Cibolo Valley Post 8315 participates in Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Independence Day, and Christmas celebrations and other city functions, and they sponsor the Schertz Memorial Day celebration along with the Knights of Columbus #6358. This year, the post is also planning an unofficial celebration for Veterans Day. Several members of the group own classic cars, including 1970s military Jeeps and 1980s HUMMVs, and will occasionally organize classic car displays and parades throughout the community. They plan to do this for Veterans Day this year, in honor of all who have served.
Fighting for the rights of Veterans falls in line with my personal values, my upbringing as a Pacific Islander from Guam, and my military experiences taking care of soldiers and their families.
The Military Affairs Committee of The Chamber (Schertz, Cibolo, Selma) is responsible for organizing the community’s official Veterans Day remembrance ceremony, to be held this year on Thursday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. The VFW members typically support and attend this event as well. The ceremony will be held at the newly renovated Schertz Veterans Plaza, 512 Schertz Parkway, and the scheduled keynote speaker is JBSA Lieutenant General Brad Webb. Philanthropy is one of the main priorities for the members of VFW Post 8315. They hold scholarship competitions throughout the year and donate funds to various non-profit organizations in the community. They sponsor Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops, a corn hole team, and a Pacific Islanders dance group. They also sometimes assist with specific requests for donations or financial support to community veterans and their families. continued on page 32

This year, the post earned another important distinction. It was awarded All-State and All-American status for the 2020-2021 VFW year. The post had previously earned All-State status from 2013-2016 and All-American status in 2016. This award is the highest honor a post can receive. To qualify, the post must meet specific criteria including requirements for the number of members, fundraising efforts for veteran and military support, community service, social media presence, partnerships, and more. Henry Rivera Conway has been commander of Post 8315 since June 2020 and was also the commander from 2013-2016. He served as District 5 Commander in 2017-2018. A U.S. Army veteran with 22 years of active-duty service, Conway has traveled overseas to Guam, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Iraq, and Kuwait as part of his military service. For Conway, involvement with the VFW has been a family affair, and his wife and sons have joined him in his work with the organization. His wife Eileen has held several Auxiliary positions with the VFW and is currently the Treasurer. “I am very blessed to be married to my lovely wife, friend, and life partner of 36 years, who has supported me 110% in all my life endeavors, in the military and with the VFW,” said Conway. “She and my sons Henry Ray and Heath Ryan have been beside me working at the VFW since 2005.”

Conway first became acquainted with Cibolo Valley Post 8315 through his son’s Boy Scout Troop, after he learned that the VFW had sponsored the troop. He started getting acquainted with the post since he was already a VFW member at large but did not yet belong to any individual post. He was immediately impressed by the organization and thought it would be a good fit for him. “I liked the way they operated, their welcoming atmosphere, and their mission of helping veterans and their families,” said Conway. “Fighting for the rights of Veterans falls in line with my personal values, my upbringing as a Pacific Islander from Guam, and my military experiences taking care of soldiers and their families.” Now as post commander, Conway is responsible for all post activities, facilities, and staff. Members of the public can enjoy all the post activities, including Friday and Saturday night band or DJ performances and the annual BBQ and Chili cookoffs. There are also two halls available for rental – a smaller hall with a capacity of 70 and a larger one with a capacity of 400. Proceeds from events and hall rentals help the post raise funds for their operational expenses and philanthropic activities. Historical Places, People, and Events Honored Across the City By: Dean Weirtz
O
ver a decade ago a Schertz City Council resolution created the City of Schertz Historical Preservation Committee tasked, among other things, with identifying and recognizing historic elements of the Schertz community. The idea was to provide citizens of the community with an understanding of the community’s historic beginnings and give informal recognition to real estate features still present that would be considered historic elements of the community. Supporting the original Council resolution is the Schertz Comprehensive Land Plan that provides the “definitive source of information regarding existing and future conditions and characteristics of the Schertz community. The Plan focuses on preserving and enhancing the unique qualities of our town, including “its small-town atmosphere, rich history, and culture.” The Plan envisions a city that “looks to its past with pride” and is “recognizable for its ‘character, its rich history, its people and its possibilities.” Chapter 8 of the Plan stipulates that “opportunity exists to identify, research, and construct interpretive signage about historically or environmentally significant sites and activities." Four suggested community enhancements appear in chapter 8 that encourage the renovation, reuse, rehabilitation of underutilized structures. The Committee, in its early development, saw the benefit of doing the research that would give insight as to which neighborhoods and which city real estate elements would qualify as “rich historic” features of the community. The resulting findings of the Committee’s research have resulted in identifying 31 separate Schertz “Landmark Properties” (22 in Guadalupe County and 9 in Comal County) and three “Heritage Neighborhoods”. “Landmarks” would include homes, businesses, or properties that possess unique features due to either nostalgic, aesthetic, architectural, or symbolic attributes and which could have an enduring impact on the City’s cultural identity. A “Heritage Neighborhood” is one in which multiple “Landmark Properties” exist and/or collectively represent the early development of the community. One of the three “Heritage Neighborhoods” includes what is
termed “Old Central Schertz”, including Main Street and the six-block neighborhood south of FM 78 at First Street. The most prominent “Landmark Properties” in that neighborhood include the 500 block of Main Street which contains three original business buildings (Wm. Schertz Mercantile-509 Main St.), (original Schertz Bank-507 Main St.) (First City Hall, Library, Police Dept. & Fire Station-508 Main St.), (the Schertz Community Hospital Building-801 Main St.), and several original homes along Main Street (321, 603,707,711,537) to include the Schertz family home in the 400 block. Another of the “Heritage Neighborhoods” is just north of the “Old Central Schertz” neighborhood and is best known as Aviation Heights. The homes throughout this neighborhood date back to the 1950s and reflect the one-story bungalow architectural style. All street names in the neighborhood honor famous aviators of the WWI and WWII eras. An early farming village of the late 19th century called Comal Settlement comprises the third Schertz “Heritage Neighborhood”. Like Old Central Schertz, Comal Settlement was born out of early settlers’ desire to have land that they could farm as they had done in the old country. The first arrivals to Comal Settlement, as in Old Schertz Central, were among the first settlers of New Braunfels, Texas. Schertz annexed the territory along FM 482 including Comal Settlement. Annexation resulted in the capture of a treasure trove of historic real estate and family farm properties now designated as Schertz Landmark Properties. The most recent designation being the Hensman farm at 2705 FM 482. The neighborhoods, homes, businesses, farms, and churches that demark the early history of the Schertz community and as such provide prima-facia reminders of the City’s “rich history” as proposed by the Comprehensive Land Plan. It is the wish of the Historical Preservation Committee that by recognizing elements of the City that warrant mention as historic features, citizens will take pride in the place they call home and seek to preserve the elements that make up its rich history.

Schertz Historical Preservation Committee The Schertz Historical Preservation Committee (SHPC) is a small group of 14 Schertz volunteers interested in preserving the historic remnants of our city’s rich past. The City’s heritage dates back to the mid-19th century and the arrival of the first European settlers to the Cibolo River Valley.
The committee has two publications on local history available for sale. "Schertz, Texas: The Story of Great Ancestry, Legacy, and Development" is available for $15, and "Schertz, Texas: A Photo History" is available for $25. These books can be viewed and purchased at the Schertz Public Library, Schertz Visitor Center, and Schertz City Hall Water Department. Tropical Smoothie Café Gives Back Local business owners Peggy and Steven Johns of Tropical Smoothie Café made it their mission during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to give back to families battling cancer. Throughout the month of September, Tropical Smoothie Café held four "Angel Warrior" days where 100% of the store's profits went to the family or foundations for four different cancer fighters. September 5 was Mateo Sparkman-Luna Day, September 16 was Bryce Wisdom Day, September 28 was Reagan Lee Day, and September 30 was Gabriella Torres Day. Two years ago the Johns were inspired by the story of Bryce Wisdom, the Judson junior who courageously battled cancer for two years before passing away in July 2020. When Bryce was in the middle of his battle, the Johns helped the Wisdoms feed Bryce after long chemo treatments. Bryce loved the smoothies! From that relationship, the Johns grew their mission to support families like the Wisdoms, who deal with the day-to-day struggles that come with a child with cancer. With the help of the generous community, Tropical Smoothie Café was able to raise $10,000 for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Planting Seeds of Community
The Crossvine neighborhood recently unveiled a series of Community Gardens located off of Hollering Vine. The gardens will be used by The Crossvine residents to grow fresh vegetables, herbs, and even flowers. It will be another gathering space where people can come together to create healthier lives. Ideas and plans for the gardens started during meetings at the very beginning of the planning process for The Crossvine. Everyone was invited to toss ideas onto the wish list for the community, and one of those ideas was a community garden. The garden idea perfectly fits into the concept of a community built on healthy outdoor spaces and neighborly connections. Farming is also a part of the cultural heritage of this area and the community gardens pay homage to this tradition. “From the beginning, one of our core guiding principles has been to develop community through connections whether it is the trails, lending libraries, pocket parks, mail kiosks, amenity center and now, the community gardens,” said Chris Price, President of The Price Companies, Developers of The Crossvine. “The community gardens are the most fulfilling to date, but certainly will not be the last connection at The Crossvine.” Besides creating delicious food, The Crossvine residents will get to spend more time outdoors in nature, getting their hands

dirty and connecting with where their food comes from. Plans of hosting gardening workshops and group projects, like creating composting bins and learning about heirloom seeds, are also in the works. Currently, the gardens are for residents only, but there are plans to eventually host a farmers market at The Crossvine that all Schertz neighbors can attend.

My name is Hailey Skrobarcek, and it is my honor to serve as your 2021-2022 Miss Friendly City on the Schertz Sweetheart Court. I am 16 years old and currently a sophomore at Samuel Clemens High School where I participate in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Law Club. I have grown up in SCUCISD schools. While at Schertz Elementary and Wilder Intermediate, I completed the Dual Language program. Additionally at Wilder, I became a PAL and was a Kiwanis “Terrific Kid” 5th and 6th-grade years. During my time at Corbett Junior High School, I was on the Lady Mustangs basketball team and went on to be a Lady Buffs freshmen basketball player. My family has lived, worked, and participated in outreach in Schertz for 30 years and has shown my 10-year-old sister Hannah and I why this community is a great place to live and grow our family. My community involvement has included volunteering at the Schertz Animal Services, helping with food drives for RACAP, TruLight Ministries, Merritt Lakeside Senior Village, Good Shepherd Catholic Church food pantry, and several Back-to-School supply events. As I navigate the rest of my high school years the focus will be to prepare for attending college in Texas and studying law to become an attorney. One day I would love to be a prosecutor and help those who can’t help themselves. Being a member of the Schertz Sweetheart Courts has been an amazing opportunity and I am thankful for the City of Schertz for helping me become the person I am today.

Happenings Seguin Holiday Stroll Seguin’s Annual Holiday Stroll begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 2 with the Holiday Stroll Parade. RACAP Holiday Meal Basket Assistance Program 2021
The Randolph Area Christian Assistance Program (RACAP) will accept applications for the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday meal basket assistance program from September 20, 2021, through November 18, 2021. Thanksgiving applications will be accepted through October 29, 2021, and the deadline for Christmas is November 18, 2021. Applications from families in need of help for the holidays because of limited or no income, who are at or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines, will be accepted. RACAP is seeking financial donations to cover the cost of its Holiday Meal Basket Program. Donations from churches, businesses, groups, or individuals are greatly appreciated and are being accepted now. Please make all donations payable to RACAP and designate on the check that the donation is specifically for the “General Fund”. Lou Cady Celebrates 100 Years
Local Resident Lou Cady celebrated his 100th birthday on October 8, 2021. Lou was born an only child in Lodi, California to Louie E. Cady Sr. and Mary Pratt on October 8, 1921. Lou’s father lived to be 92 years old and his mother lived to be 88 years old. In 1939, he joined the army and served in World War II. He also served as a part of the Air Force Reserve. Lou has two children, Lynn Witt of Cibolo, TX, and Don Cady of Murphys, CA. His son Steve Cady passed away in 2002. Lou has 4 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren spread across Texas, California, and Idaho. He has been a competitive archer for over 50 years, competing in tournaments across Texas. He also enjoys flying planes, horseback riding, and playing many musical instruments. In 2014, Lou joined the Schertz Family YMCA and has been training with personal trainer Joy Graham ever since. They work on balance, stability, flexibility, and strength. On October 4, YMCA staff hosted a special birthday celebration in honor of Lou. Please join us in celebrating Lou’s 100th birthday!

LOCAL HISTORY On November 7, 1995, Schertz City Council approved an ordinance that allowed rezoning of property on Elbel Road that paved the way for the construction of a Guadalupe County Annex building. This was important in the minds of Schertz citizens who previously had to travel to Seguin to transact county business.
TEXAS HISTORY On November 17, 1835, the people of Cincinnati, Ohio, decided to aid the cause of the Texas Revolution by raising funds to procure two cannons. Since the United States was taking an official stance of neutrality toward the rebellion in Texas, the citizens of Cincinnati referred to their cannon as “hollow ware.” Two guns were manufactured in Cincinnati and then shipped down the Mississippi to New Orleans. The cannons arrived in Galveston at the beginning of April 1836, accompanied by the family of a Dr. Charles Rice. The guns were presented to representatives of Texas under the sponsorship of Dr. Rice's twin daughters, Elizabeth and Eleanor. Someone in the crowd made notice of the fact that there were two sets of twins in the presentation, the girls and the guns, and thus the cannons became known as the Twin Sisters. The guns went into action on April 20, and, supported the infantry assault the next day at the battle of San Jacinto.
