Schlitz Audubon Nature Center conserves our land’s diverse habitats on Lake Michigan and provides meaningful experiences and environmental education for all.

Director Emeritus Dorothy K. Vallier (1910-2013) Honorary Directors Edwin P. Wiley (1929- 2019)

Thank you for helping us create a sense of wonder! You, our donors, are a vital part of all we do at Schlitz Audubon. As you will read in the following pages, our broad accomplishments in the past year highlight how together, we create a sense of wonder in our quest to bring the joy of nature to all.     We strive to preserve, restore, and create beautiful natural spaces that allow visitors of all abilities to enjoy the wonders of naShane Delsman, Board President, and Helen Boomsma, Executive Director ture. The Center is home for myriad plants and animals who rely on our high-quality habitats. Our forests, prairies, ponds, and wetlands are tended by dedicated staff and volunteers who beautify and maintain a healthy landscape for future generations. Our educational programs serve a wide spectrum of the community and provide exceptional experiences for all ages. Visitors go birding, gaze at stars, identify plants, and discover wildlife in a welcoming, engaging setting. The knowledge gained by children and adults fosters a sense of kinship with nature, encouraging community members to become stewards of our shared resources. Visitors and program participants have the opportunity to see and even touch our animal ambassadors, who live year-round in our Visitor Center. They also sense the wonder of our powerful raptor ambassadors that are nurtured by staff and volunteers, who accompany them to awe-inspiring presentations throughout the year. Earlier this year, the Center completed a strategic plan titled On Kinship and Nature that will guide our work through 2027. The plan strives to create enduring relationships and connections between community and nature through meaningful experiences and hands-on learning. On Kinship and Nature also includes several land and structural projects that will increase our programmatic impact and our commitment to accessibility, bringing the joy of nature to more people. We are happy to share that for the sixth year in a row, we have received four stars from Charity Navigator, their highest rating. Thank you for entrusting Schlitz Audubon with your support and helping us share the wonders of nature with members of our community.

Sense of Wonder | Education

N

ature inspires a sense of wonder in all generations. When children are a part of educational programming at Schlitz Audubon, they learn about, see, and even touch wildlife they might not

otherwise experience, igniting a passion that lasts years into the future. When adults sense the same wonder as a child does, it plants a seed that blossoms into a spirit of stewardship for all of nature. Starting with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, students interact with the outdoors in myriad ways. They turn over logs to gaze at salamanders without touching their sensitive skin, learning scientific inquiry and empathy. Children hike to an ephemeral pond to look at the first blooms of skunk cabbage, observing the seasons and talking about what they encounter, introducing literacy skills. Through patting mud into mudpies, students squeeze, grasp, and bear different weights, developing the tactile skills that help them hold a pencil. These activities are part of an innovative curriculum that is filled with authentic learning. Thanks to generous donors, every week students from Malaika Early Learning Center and Next Door Milwaukee, often living in areas with little green space, join us to enjoy these formative opportunities through our Urban Outreach Program. Last year, we provided 16,000 school children with stimulating environmental education. Through donor support to our scholarship program, children who can’t readily access nature are able to experience our inclusive classes. More than 4,225 youth developed powerful connections to nature through free field trips and in-school assemblies. Throughout summer, bright rays of sunshine fill our summer campers with joy during thoughtful, nature-inspired programs. Campers search for rocks and fossils, make art with found materials, and learn about water while hiking near ponds or by the Lake Michigan shore, forging a strong relationship with nature at an early age. Every year for over a decade, children from the Boys & Girls Club of Milwaukee have enjoyed a week of participating in camp activities. Many will pilot a canoe for the first time and may even catch a frog, having fun while developing skills in environmental stewardship! Our age-encompassing programs encourage adults to also experience the natural world with wonder, including those with specific needs. Adults are captivated by our many birding programs, where they observe colorful migrating species or winter residents. Many identify trees, gaze at prairie wildflowers, and discover the magic of insects while surveying principles of science and phenology. They use telescopes to tour moonlit evenings and hike our trails inspired by the perspective lens of nature writers. All spark an interest and fulfill a passion for nature knowledge. There’s an opportunity for lifelong learning in every step taken at the Center, no matter the age. 3

Sense of Wonder | Conservation

A

ll visitors to Schlitz Audubon experience the wonder of engaging with nature. Key to that experience is our land’s 185 acres of high-quality habitats, 31 of which are among the highest in

the region. Our team of conservation staff and volunteers works throughout the seasons to preserve, restore, and create rich landscapes where people observe abundant wildlife up close, making them available to people of all abilities. With generous support from donors, we restore habitats through strategic removal of invasive species and ash trees, followed by dedicated planting to increase biotic quality. As a part of our Hardwood Swamp restoration, we planted 25,000 seedlings, shrubs, and trees to restore a vital, endangered habitat. With a recent expansion of the project to the corner of Brown Deer Road and Lake Drive, visitors will soon be welcomed with a stunning view of native wildflowers and a lush green forest. We strive to preserve our beautiful acreage all year long, which is a haven for 261 species of birds, including migrants and year-long residents. Preserving and restoring habitats creates vital breeding and nesting grounds for these birds, including 20 birds of greatest conservation need. Our visitors witness the wonders of spring migration, connecting with this grand annual cycle in habitats that support species who rely on the Center as a stopover site. People forge relationships all year long with bird species who nest, rest during spring and fall migration, and live here as winter residents. Key to our preservation efforts is the work of our volunteer land stewards, who clear invasive species, encouraging the repopulation of vital native plants. Our conservation work is truly a community effort, with staff, volunteers, and people who join as members all experiencing the wonders of the natural world from numerous vantage points. An exciting new addition to the Center is our rain garden boardwalk, east of the Visitor Center. People can traverse this glorious garden of marsh marigold, blue flag iris, cardinal flower, and more, before hiking north towards our Central Wetlands Loop. On the nearly two miles of accessible trails at the heart of our property, visitors of all abilities observe a variety of wildlife. Molly’s Pond and Dragonfly Pond, two newer wetlands created as a part of our ravine restoration, are essential for breeding salamanders, frogs, and toads. The accessible trails are also home to bird-friendly tree species, such as bur oak, hackberry, and sugar maple, making bird watching here a rewarding endeavor. With donor support, the committed conservation of our land provides wildlife with healthy habitats, allowing visitors to see numerous species in a stunning, biotically diverse ecosystem. 5

Sense of Wonder | Animal Ambassadors

W

hen a child or adult meets a turtle, snake, or raptor in a safe and welcoming setting, they often feel a kinship with that animal - and it positively influences how they perceive wildlife.

This kinship occurs daily at Schlitz Audubon. Children who appreciate nature early on will aspire to protect it in later years as nature becomes a part of their life. Through our Animal Ambassador and Raptor Programs, visitors can see, hear, and even feel wildlife in a way that is life changing. When nature becomes an important part of people's lives, everyone in the community benefits. Visit our Great Hall on any given day to meet some of our animal ambassadors, who reside in high-quality enclosures located in viewable areas of the building. Eddie, our ornate box turtle, is often seen ambling through his terrarium, an appealing, life-like habitat near the entrance doors. Emerson, our large common snapping turtle, is a favorite of Center visitors, seen swimming in his 530-gallon, well-appointed tank, complete with waterfall and basking rock. These animals and others, such as frogs and a snake, serve as our in-house welcoming crew. Thanks to our donors, volunteers are able to care for these creatures, providing ample food and attention to over 50 of our animal ambassadors. Our reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates are looked after in a dedicated state-of-the-art care room, where volunteers provide enrichment for and observe the animals for any behaviors that might indicate health issues, as well as clean their homes. The birds in our Raptor Program are also assisted by volunteers who provide opportunities for the community to be close to a majestic bird of prey. Our Raptor Program is a forever home to 15 magnificent birds of prey, including owls, hawks, falcons, and Bald Eagles. Our program even includes an American Crow, who inspires audiences by painting, and a Turkey Vulture who impresses people with flight displays. Seeing these birds and sensing their powerful presence is awe-inspiring. All of the birds in our program have either been injured or imprinted on humans. They can’t survive on their own, so are able to live at the Center, assisted by our raptor educators and volunteers, in their own private building. Thanks to our donors, four staff and 42 volunteers present as many as 600 programs annually, where they educate about our birds’ counterparts in the wild. Alongside meeting a bird of prey, visitors learn about lifestyle changes that they can make to help preserve wild raptors, such as not littering on the highway or to avoid using lead fishing tackle. Personal experiences with our raptors and other animal ambassadors, paired with timely and relevant education, create a strong relationship with wildlife that spurs a commitment to preserving it. 7

We invite you to consider becoming part of the Evergreen Society, a small group of visionary benefactors who cherish nature and conservation, and who have included Schlitz Audubon in their estate plans. The Evergreen Society recognizes and honors donors who will help advance the mission of Schlitz Audubon though their estate plans. Planned gifts can be made through bequests, retirement plans, charitable remainder trusts, life insurance policies, or appreciated assets. Even if you feel you only have modest means to share, you can still include Schlitz Audubon in your will—you need only believe in our mission. Together, we will decide which aspect of the Center means the most to you, and we will ensure that this area will benefit from your interest. This may include our land conservation efforts, our award-winning Nature School, our celebrated Raptor and Animal Ambassador Program, or our nature-based educational programs with offerings for all ages and abilities.
