Thank you for being a part of

You, our donors, are an essential part of everything we achieve at Schlitz Audubon. As you will read in the following pages, our accomplishments in the past year highlight how together we are growing roots and weaving connections throughout the community.

The land provides strong roots on which we grow intricate connections between people and the environment. We strive to preserve, restore, and create beautiful gathering spaces that allow visitors of all abilities to enjoy nature. Our dedicated staff and volunteers maintain critical habitat that benefits myriad species of flora and fauna, providing them a place to thrive.

Our exceptional educational programs offer enlightening nature-based experiences for all ages. Adults connect, learn, and continue to grow throughout life with our educators as helpful guides. Participants engage in guided birding hikes, plant identification workshops, art programs, and special events that delight and build connection through shared experiences.

Members of the community are awed by the Raptors of Schlitz Audubon, who excite audiences with their beauty and majesty while serving as educational ambassadors. Our conservation message is delivered by expert raptor educators who build connections by informing visitors and program participants about the important role raptors play in our environment.

Our Nature School, School Programs, and Homeschool offerings contribute to building purposeful and academically useful skill sets that allow children to grow and expand their roots. Learning takes place on the trail, within the forest, in the prairie, or wherever wild nature has a valuable lesson or skill to teach.

We are proud to share that for the seventh year in a row, we have received four stars from Charity Navigator, their highest rating. Thank you for entrusting Schlitz Audubon with your support and helping us weave connections with all members of our community.

Helen Boomsma, Executive Director, and Ben Pavlik, Board President

School-aged Education | Growing Roots & Weaving Connections

Schlitz

Audubon’s school-aged educational programs enrich the academic experiences of children. Our Nature School, School Programs, and Homeschool offerings all contribute to building a purposeful and academically useful skill set that creates wonder by instilling a lasting love of nature and the environment. Thanks to the generosity of our donor community, these opportunities are available to a broad audience to ensure that all students have access to outdoor education.

SCHOOL-AGED YOUTH PROVIDED WITH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

Through programming tailored to babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and K4 students, the Nature School uses real-life experiences to help kids gain abilities throughout their educational journey. Teachers introduce science, math, and literacy skills by using a hands-on, sensory-based approach. Children learn to use a ruler and count by measuring the distance to the top of a hill. They learn literacy and writing skills by creating poetry about trees and wildlife they encounter while hiking through our habitats. Many of our classes are held outside, in all types of weather, to foster resilience and self-sufficiency.

TRIPS

AND SCHOOL VISITS

In our School Programs, developed for students from K5 through grade 12, youth learn through assemblies right in their schools or on field trips at Schlitz Audubon. Our naturalists have created and lead programs designed to correlate with the Wisconsin Department of Instruction Standards for Science and to supplement work already being done in the classroom. Students learn about bird behavior, adaptation, ecology, raptors, and all aspects of the wild world by participating in a broad selection of interactive and engaging classes.

391

INTERACTIVE SCHOOL PROGRAMS OFFERED ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS

Our Homeschool Programs foster children’s development with a curriculum created for students ages 6 to 11. Programs are science and project-based, and each session combines educational activities and games with take-home learning extensions to help students undertake more in-depth exploration on their own. No matter the season, students venture to the ponds, to Lake Michigan, and through the forests and prairies. While there, they learn concepts such as ecology, geology, the water cycle, zoology, and botany.

Our school-aged educational programs encourage children to go further in their acquisition of the knowledge that will help them build character and skills for life.

The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon | Growing Roots & Weaving Connections

The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon spark excitement and awe throughout the community. Whether meeting them for the first or the hundredth time, the majesty of our eagles, hawks, owls, and falcons serves as a powerful learning bridge between their world and ours. These memorable encounters also impart how raptors serve as ecological indicators and, in this role, help gauge the health of the environment. As educational ambassadors, the Raptors of Schlitz Audubon inspire and educate tens of thousands of people throughout Wisconsin every year.

83,333

COMMUNITY MEMBERS EXPERIENCED MEETING OUR RAPTORS

Our Raptor staff, volunteers, and ambassador birds work tirelessly to bring environmental education to the community. In classrooms, Zari, a Great Horned Owl, perches confidently on her handler's glove while children admire the brightness of her yellow eyes and size of her powerful feet. At public events, Otis, a Peregrine Falcon, offers the opportunity to witness a Wisconsin-endangered species up close while our educators share the conservation success of wild falcon populations. All our birds have a story to share and help to forge personal connections to wildlife.

RAPTOR VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED

6,231

HOURS CARING FOR OUR BIRDS & EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY

The raptors also provide the means to explore past and present issues in conservation, and to teach us about what we can do to help. Just 50 years ago, raptor species such as the Bald Eagle were on the brink of extinction before concerned citizens rallied for stronger pesticide controls. The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon continue to inspire people to protect these magnificent creatures and steward the environments in which they live. We feel great joy in creating the connections in which these relationships develop and grow.

690

RAPTOR PROGRAMS WERE PRESENTED THROUGHOUT THE REGION

Thanks to the support of donors, we provide high-quality, individualized care for our 15 resident birds. These birds help educate the public about avian ecology, conservation, and the important role they play in our shared ecosystem. Audiences range from students at school programs, to families at the Wisconsin State Fair, to viewers tuning in to Fox6’s Real Milwaukee, where our birds appear in a new monthly segment. Each of our live demonstrations provides an unparalleled experience designed to captivate and engage audiences of all ages.

The Raptors of Schlitz Audubon build powerful connections to wildlife and showcase effective conservation efforts.

Conservation | Growing Roots & Weaving Connections

AtSchlitz Audubon, our year-round care for the land embodies and reflects our conservation values. Our management plan emphasizes preserving and restoring land to promote species diversity, and to create balanced habitats that give vulnerable plants, birds, and mammals the ecosystem they depend upon to thrive. The land and wildlife in turn provide the entire Greater Milwaukee community with treasured learning experiences in a beautiful haven for exploration and discovery.

185

ACRES COMPRISE THE CENTER & ARE UNDER ACTIVE MANAGEMENT

Several valuable conservation projects were completed last year that underscore our enduring land management values. The Bluff Pavilion Courtyard was created by using locally-sourced stone to produce a beautiful, open-air learning space. Thoughtfully designed to mitigate erosive run-off, this space also protects the health of the spectacular remnant old growth forest on the bluff below. Surrounding the courtyard are “The Gardens,” highlighting three habitat types: woodland, savanna, and pollinator garden, each planted with a diverse selection of Wisconsin native species. This colorful and inviting space is a new community gathering place for immersive educational programs, summer camps, weddings, and much more!

The Hardwood Swamp Restoration Project is another remarkable example of how we work with the land to enhance its unique qualities. Through invasive species removal and thoughtful native restoration, this habitat has become a beautiful open mix of wetland and meadow that greets visitors on the corner of Lake Drive and Brown Deer Road. A rare habitat type, our extended hardwood swamp fills an important niche for a variety of plant, bird, and animal species that rely upon such specialized habitat for survival.

Finally, at the heart of the Center experience, the entire onemile Central Wetlands Loop is now fully accessible. This important trail conversion helps to protect adjacent habitats by alleviating soil compaction and preventing run-off into the ravine. The loop provides unmatched access for all, including people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices, to enjoy species-rich woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and three ponds.

Core conservation and restoration projects provide current and future visitors with opportunities to learn, connect with, and enjoy nature.

Community

Engagement

| Growing Roots & Weaving Connections

We welcome all members of the community to experience nature and to explore its complex web of relationships. Our nature center is designed to be enjoyed by all ages and all experience levels. Whether you’re a child who enjoys the wonder of wildflowers, dragonflies, or pond life, or an adult who is embarking on a new journey of discovery, the Center is a place to explore your passion for the natural world.

186,000

PEOPLE ENGAGED WITH THE CENTER THROUGH NATURE EXPERIENCES & EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

We offer programs and experiences that appeal to people who wish to continue learning throughout life. Art classes and talks, regional geology workshops, guided birding hikes, and other nature-based activities engage the public while filling a need for learning and connection. Visitors can appreciate nature alongside others who share similar interests and then take with them practical skills, like tree identification or how to attract native birds, they can use everywhere. Interactions like these build new conservation leaders and foster a healthy culture of environmental stewardship.

1,506

PEOPLE WITH SPECIFIC NEEDS PARTICIPATED IN CUSTOMIZED LEARNING PROGRAMS

Sharing the wonders of our landscape and wildlife with people from all walks of life brings joy and offers participants a new way to engage with the world. Adult special events such as Flight Night, a beer tasting event, and Wingspan & Wine, a sampling event featuring our birds of prey, encourage attendees to build community while having fun and learning about raptors and conservation. We recently added programs with the Center’s Horticultural Specialist that will help community members learn how to select plants for any habitat type, plus how to care for a native yard.

WE BROUGHT SCHLITZ AUDUBON TO

828

SENIORS AT ASSISTED LIVING OR RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

While we offer classes at the nature center, we also reach into the wider community to bring the experience of nature directly to those places where many people live and gather, such as senior living homes and community centers. We customize our programs to meet the specific needs of any group, so that all can enjoy the wonders of nature.

No matter where you are on your journey with nature, Schlitz Audubon accommodates all ages and interest levels.

Stewards of the environment are developed at Schlitz Audubon with the help of our knowledgeable educators, who inspire an affinity for the wild world that endures throughout life.

We invite you to consider becoming part of the Evergreen Society, a small group of visionary benefactors who cherish nature and conservation, and who have included Schlitz Audubon in their estate plans. The Evergreen Society recognizes and honors donors who will help advance the mission of Schlitz Audubon in this way.

Planned gifts can be made through bequests, retirement plans, charitable remainder trusts, life insurance policies, or appreciated assets. Even if you feel you only have modest means to share, you can still include Schlitz Audubon in your will—you need only believe in our mission. Together, we will decide which aspect of the Center means the most to you, and we will ensure that this area will benefit from your interest. This may include our land conservation efforts, our award-winning Nature School, our celebrated Raptor and Animal Ambassador Program, or our nature-based educational programs with offerings for all ages and abilities.

Learn more by contacting us at giving@schlitzaudubon.org or calling 414-352-2880 x122 today!

Every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of our donor list. If you find an error, please contact us at (414) 352-2880 x237 to make a correction.
