Thank you for creating experiences at Schlitz Audubon! During the past year, donors, staff, and volunteers have worked together to create transformative nature experiences throughout greater Milwaukee. In the following pages you’ll read how your philanthropy has laid the groundwork for us to invite people to engage in the natural world. Through your support we have invit-

John Grunau, Board President and Helen Boomsma, Executive Director

ed people with memory loss and cognitive

changes to participate in the program SPARK!, welcomed a Barn Owl into the Raptor program, built the new Welcome Booth, and supported the future vision for these 185 acres. Throughout the past year, we’ve also created additional programming in our Nature Preschool space, Nature Mondays and Cozy Corners. The new Milner Lake Michigan Viewing Deck provides a tranquil setting from which to enjoy Lake Michigan with a pair of binoculars. New Citizen Science initiatives have engaged community members to collect vital data about plant and animal species at the Center. It’s hard to quantify an experience. For a child, the awe and wonder that is borne from one of our 17 Raptors flying overhead is invaluable. For participants and family members taking part in SPARK!, there is no price tag on once again smiling with delight. You have provided us with the tangible tools so that we can invite people to experience the intangible. Because of your generosity, we can both create new experiences, and work to improve the land that is the home for these experiences. Thank you for being a valuable part of Schlitz Audubon.

John Grunau Board President

Helen Boomsma Executive Director 1

Creating Experiences | SPARK!

A

t Schlitz Audubon, we’re committed to providing environmental education for people of every age and ability. Center staff are continually seeking ways to welcome new people to

explore our trails and engage with animal ambassadors. That’s what makes our SPARK! collaboration so exciting. SPARK! is a program developed for people experiencing cognitive changes such as memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia. Participants create artwork, sing together, interact with live animal ambassadors, and explore outside on our wheelchair accessible trails and boardwalks. Our program is also unique in that we invite collaboration with our Preschool students, encouraging diverse multigenerational interaction. Our SPARK! program has been generously funded by Bader Philanthropies. Through Bader Philanthropies, participants and caregivers are able to attend SPARK! and explore the Center free of charge. Using multi-sensory stimulation and exploration of a monthly theme, participants gain knowledge of the natural world, and cultural and scientific topics. SPARK! does not focus on past memories or experiences, instead stimulating new feelings and reactions. Center Naturalists have also led SPARK! programs in the community at Hales Corners Library and Wright House Senior Living. By doing this, we bring nature experiences to those who may no longer be able to independently explore the natural world. However, immediate participants are not the only people who SPARK! is designed to include. This program is also intended for spouses, children, other family members, and healthcare professionals who provide care and companionship. Both Marie Duane and her mother Betty Schuit, pictured left, benefit from this program. For those close to someone experiencing cognitive decline, SPARK! provides a pleasant diversion from the daily demands of caretaking. Participating in this program is an opportunity to experience a different side of one another, one of curiosity and enchantment. It’s this spark of joy from which the program takes its name.

Your generosity has created new experiences for people of various ages and abilities.

Creating Experiences | Supporting the Vision

I

n early 2016, Schlitz Audubon Director of Conservation Marc White shared renderings for a future trail and boardwalk system, new ponds and habitat plantings, and strategies for securing

vulnerable ravines. He shared the Center’s vision for the future of these 185 acres. The challenge regarding any vision is making the step from imagination to reality, and that requires the right tools for the job. The Center needed equipment with the capability to utilize numerous attachments for controlling invasive species, removing hazard ash trees, restoration tree planting, storm water management, as well as, trail, boardwalk, and fence construction. Thanks to generous donations this past year by Christine Symchych and Jim McNulty, and Margarete and David Harvey, Schlitz Audubon purchased a compact track loader to help fulfill this vision. This critical piece of equipment will support the Center’s land management, facilities, and capital project needs for years to come, laying the boardwalk for future generations of plants, animals, and people. During this time, Schlitz Audubon is implementing a Conservation Plan that will enhance our land’s ecosystems and support the Center’s mission. Schlitz Audubon is fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteer land stewards who work diligently to improve these 185 acres. These volunteers and others also donated funds toward the purchase of track loader attachments. With their hands in the soil, land volunteers greatly understand the impact this equipment has on their work. The track loader and its attachments empowers everyone to accomplish more work with greater efficiency. We’ve already used this equipment to manage dense thickets of invasive brush. Additionally, the track loader has played a vital role in building both the Mystery Lake Boardwalk and the Milner Lake Michigan Viewing Deck, where one can watch waterfowl swim and dive in Lake Michigan’s waves. Now, children can lay their bellies on a growing number of boardwalks and peer deep into ponds where frogs and turtles swim within, all while accompanied by family members regardless of physical considerations.

Your generosity has created valuable nature experiences for current and future generations of visitors.

Creating Experiences | Welcome Booth

O

ne of the most important aspects about any experience is the first impression. That initial moment sets the tone for the entire experience. In considering our visitor experience at the Center,

the need for a Welcome Booth at our entrance became evident. The new Welcome Booth offers visitors a seamless transition to what we’re all here to explore: nature. After stopping at the entrance, from the time visitors move forward into the property, they are completely enveloped in the natural world. Welcome Booth staff provide trail maps, offer personalized trail guidance, and inform guests about programs taking place during their visit. This has changed the dynamic of the visitor experience, as well as the purpose of the Center’s main building. Visitors now visit the building as it fits in to their individual nature experience. Inside, they can learn about the Center’s land, our conservation efforts, peruse the Center’s store, and explore the Schlitz Audubon Art Gallery. The Welcome Booth was generously funded by the Schlitz Audubon Board of Directors, Patti and Jack McKeithan, and the Paula and Ed Gebhardt family. Its structure, designed and built by our Facilities Manager Jason Festerling, beautifully complements the style of our main building, the Dorothy K. Vallier Environmental Learning Center. Additionally, the natural area surrounding the Welcome Booth is a microcosm of the habitat we work to cultivate throughout the Center’s grounds. Visitors are welcomed by three distinct habitats, including Dry-mesic Prairie, Calcareous Fen, and Aspen Glade - together boasting 56 native plant species. A bountiful, bustling habitat of native plants and animals now accompanies an inviting smile when anyone arrives at Schlitz Audubon.

Your generosity has created a welcoming visitor experience.

Creating Experiences | Athena

A

thena, an American Barn Owl, joined the Center’s Raptor Program in May 2017. Whether it’s their heart-shaped face with deep set eyes, their slender form and graceful flight, or their 17

unique vocalizations, there is something intangible that people love about Barn Owls. Despite the public’s love for and curiosity about Barn Owls, the species faces great threats to its survival. Schlitz Audubon created the Raptor Program as a way to educate the public about these dynamic birds and their importance to the ecosystem. Our 17 birds of prey are feathered ambassadors that help provide experiences and information about their wild relatives, habitat concerns, and issues facing raptors today. Powerful and graceful, each bird has their own story that provides a connection to and an appreciation for all wildlife and the habitats we share. Having Athena participate in educational programs provides an opportunity to bring conservation to the forefront, particularly as it relates to Barn Owls, who face the double threat in the loss of their habitat through deforestation, and untimely deaths due to lead or rodenticide poisoning. Because of these threats, Barn Owls are uncommon as rescue animals, due to their scarcity and the fact that they often die young in the wild. So unlike most of our Raptors, which come to us as rescue animals, Athena was bred as an educational bird. Athena came to us at less than one month old. Her joining the Raptor Program at a young age has been crucial in building confidence and experience that she will carry into adulthood. She trains at an advanced skill level and is learning to fly around corners using sound cues alone. The generosity of donors and Raptor volunteers empowered the Center to acquire Athena from World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, which has bred and released more than 1,000 Barn Owls into the wild. Through this relationship, we are able to teach about conservation while supporting an organization that fosters it. Whenever Athena spreads her wings at a program, or during an outreach event, she is the star of the room. Having a live animal ambassador for people to observe while learning about conservation issues creates a lasting impression. Athena makes people care about conservation.

Your generosity has created memorable conservation experiences.
