Thank you for leading with us! You, our donors, are a vital part of what we accomplish here at Schlitz Audubon. Thank you so much for your dedication and support of our mission! You will see in the following pages that your commitment has helped the Center lead the way in conservation, environmental education, and making nature accessible to all.

Aliah Berman, Board President, and Helen Boomsma, Executive Director

When COVID-19 brought unexpected challenges to our community this spring, your support enabled Schlitz Audubon to quickly develop new ways to safely and effectively share nature with everyone. A number of the solutions we developed have improved our organization for the future. One example: our response to the pandemic allowed us to broaden the reach of our accessible programming, one of the topics covered in this report. Based on our years of in-person programming, we developed online offerings that we can bring to people who are unable to visit the Center, like those in senior living centers or medical care facilities. We also completed year five of our 15-year conservation plan, and the largest land project in Center history came to life. The half-million dollar Stormwater Wetland and Ravine Restoration Project provides an innovative solution to the problem of stormwater runoff. While this conservation work gives us new educational opportunities, support of our education team, including our Animal Ambassadors, gives us new ways to teach about conservation. In this report we also highlight the care space we built for our resident educator animals, who help us teach the importance of conservation to thousands of people every year. Your support has enabled us to implement enduring solutions to unique challenges during the 2020 fiscal year. Thank you for joining us in leading together.

Leading Together | COVID-19 Response

W

hen COVID-19 closed the Center in mid-March, Schlitz Audubon faced a situation that called for both adaptability and innovation. Robust support of our donor community allowed our staff

to meet the unique challenges posed by the pandemic. Our response called on all departments to swiftly implement organization-wide change in how we make nature accessible to all. Though daunting at times, we now understand that these changes will positively and permanently affect our organization. Paramount to our planning was the decision that Schlitz Audubon would continue to provide programming to the highest of standards. Our team of 65 employees quickly transitioned to a temporary work-from-home format, and from there, brought nature to our community in new and fresh ways. Essential staff came to the Center to ensure that our 15 raptors and 35 animal ambassadors were cared for and that our building and land were maintained. Our educational offerings were quickly converted to a virtual format with Naturalist videos, Facebook Live “Word with a Bird” programs, scavenger hunts, a nature book club, and more. Our conservation and facilities team safely and efficiently continued to care for our land, and our events team worked to offer virtual and small-scale gatherings whenever possible. When safe to do so, we made our trails available to the public with a reservation system to ensure social distancing. In June, we reopened the Visitor Center and began to weave in-person, small group offerings into our mix of programs. June also marked the beginning of summer camp season during which campers explored a variety of topics, including Lake Michigan fossils, ponding life, and predator-prey relationships – all conducted safely and successfully entirely outdoors. Many of the changes that took place in spring and summer of 2020 provided the building blocks for the programming we are now utilizing through fall and winter. School groups are taking advantage of our virtual and digital-based learning. Our preschoolers are enjoying outdoor instruction more than ever. Individuals and groups who choose on-site visits benefit from new infrastructure – like outdoor shelters, handwashing stations, and heaters – that permit us to offer open-air programming year-round.

Your generosity helped us to creatively respond to the challenges of COVID-19.

Leading Together | Wetland and Ravine Restoration

T

he largest and most ambitious restoration undertaking in Center history, the Stormwater Wetland and Ravine Restoration Project, began last fall after years of planning and preparation.

A feat of environmental engineering, the 22-acre project positions Schlitz Audubon as a leader in forward-thinking stormwater management. As large as this project is, when complete, most visitors will see only beautiful habitats featuring two new ponds, a step-pool water conveyance system, and gentle contours on the landscape that were not there before. Through berms, retention ponds, and vegetation, the project uses the land itself to keep water – up to 7 million gallons per year – where it falls. Because the Center is located on Lake Michigan this is especially important. Unchecked, stormwater had been flowing directly into the lake, eroding our beautiful ravines and contributing to water pollution. The most innovative feature of the project is called regenerative stormwater conveyance. This system adds over 6,000 gallons of stormwater storage and, as water flows 45 feet downslope from Molly’s Pond to the bottom of the north ravine, it mimics the functions of a natural streambed. Dissolved oxygen is boosted as water tumbles over surface cobblestone and then pools. The water is cooled and cleaned as it passes through subsurface beds of stone, gravel, and sand. Plants also play an important role in both capturing water and enhancing the natural beauty of the project area. The contoured berms and pond habitats created to capture water are now resplendent with 25,000 site-specific native plants, shrubs, and trees. These plantings will increase the diversity of the Center’s ecosystems, providing essential habitat for native animal species and migrating birds, as well as a serene backdrop for every Center visitor to enjoy. Thanks to the support of our community, who contributed funding, expertise, and time, Schlitz Audubon was able to raise more than $500,000 to complete this ambitious project. Our attention will now be turned to completing the accessible trails that will allow all visitors to experience the project area. The first of these trail segments is complete, with more to come in the near future. Next time you visit the Center, be sure to explore these new areas to see first-hand what you have helped us achieve.

Your generosity helps us lead with innovative conservation practices.

Leading Together | Accessible Programming

A

n important component of Schlitz Audubon’s mission is to provide opportunities for all members of our community to engage with nature, and to ensure that everyone can reap its restor-

ative benefits. Recent donor support made it possible for us to provide more meaningful experiences for those with specific visual, cognitive, auditory, and mobility needs. Last year, we served a total of 1,350 individuals through accessible programming before closing the Center in mid-March due to COVID-19. Already well above our goal of serving 1,000 people, we estimate that we would have reached approximately 1,800 individuals had we not been forced to unexpectedly curtail programming! Schlitz Audubon’s accessible programs take place in a safe, comfortable setting in which we share tactile experiences, such as feeling turtle shells, examining feathers, or smelling summer flowers. Our team members work with group organizers in advance to make sure that we meet the unique needs of each participant, with a focus on providing a rewarding experience. A great example of programming under the accessible umbrella is SPARK!, a special offering designed for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and early to mid-stage memory loss, and their caregivers. Through the use of multi-sensory stimulation and exploration of a special monthly theme, the goal of each 90-minute SPARK! program is to kindle joyful experiences while living in the moment, and to inspire creative expression through engaging the senses. Forming new partnerships with organizations already dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities also allowed us to expand our reach. Center educators worked with Balance, Inc. to develop and provide five interactive sessions, including Reptiles & Amphibians, Monarch Magic, and Joy of Birding, that were a delight to both participants and staff. No two accessible programs are the same. Special care is given to allow each participant plenty of opportunity to interact and communicate in ways that work for them. Community feedback on our accessible programming has been tremendous, and even as we navigate the challenges of COVID-19, expansion will remain a priority. We will continue to provide people from all backgrounds and abilities experiences with nature in ways that offer the most meaningful connections.

Your generosity helps us lead the way in providing nature for all.

Leading Together | New Animal Care Room

F

or many, an encounter with a Schlitz Audubon Animal Ambassador is an unforgettable experience. With the help of our animals, visitors learn firsthand about conservation and ecology,

while creating connections that can last a lifetime. Because they are a vital component to our mission, this last year we updated our Animal Ambassador Care Room to give them the best lives we can provide. Over the years, our Animal Ambassador Program has grown to more than 50 animals who reside permanently at Schlitz Audubon. Last year, Atlas, a Red-shouldered Hawk, joined 14 other birds of prey in our Raptor Program. The ambassador team also includes a number of herptiles: snakes, salamanders, turtles and more; as well as mammals, such as the flying squirrel Amelia. As the ambassador team has grown, so has our need for supplies. Over the years, in addition to those we purchased, local businesses and community members donated aquariums, heaters, filters, and other equipment. For decades this served us well. But this year, thanks to generous donors, Schlitz Audubon was able to provide new animal habitats and convert an unused locker space to a state-ofthe-art Animal Ambassador Care Room to house the Center’s herptiles. The new room provides much more space for the animals and the volunteers who care for them. Upgraded housing for every ambassador includes larger tanks, new UV and heat lamps, and heating pads. New electrical support and wall-anchored shelves provide security for each ambassador’s habitat. With this larger care room, we have the ability to add animals as needed. In the past year alone, Nya (Speckled King Snake), Cordelia, (Rose Hair tarantula), Eddie Lacy (endangered Ornate Box Turtle) and others joined the Animal Ambassador team. As a group, the Animal Ambassadors are busy. They visit with school children, accompany educators on outreach events, and meet people in the Great Hall of our Visitor Center. We estimate that they reach 35,000 individuals in a given year! These animals have big jobs, and they earn their rest. Thanks to the help of our donor community, they now have the best accommodations possible for those moments when they’re away from the public eye.

Your generosity helps us enhance care for our Animal Ambassadors.
