Are We There Yet? How many times have you heard your kids whine the annoying expression, “Are we there yet?” It was too many for me, so I decided to set parameters. First, no road trip would be over two hours – that magic time frame beyond which all bedlam broke out in the back seat. Second, we would only go to exciting places for which we were prepped (knowing they’d soon see Clifford the Big Red Dog and have cotton candy seemed to help). Third, if they had to ask they had to say it a different way each time – how many miles is it to the nature center? What time do we check into the waterpark? If nothing else it took them time to construct the sentences. This month we have suggestions for delightful day trips that can put a smile of your kids’ faces, and yours as well. We sent out our parent reporters with their families to get the skinny on two delightful venues. Stacey Pfeffer took in the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, a novel excursion featuring air shows with antique biplanes that take to the air to do daring stunts as well as a museum and 40 vintage vehicles. It’s a great intergenerational outing! Andrea White packed up her family and their swimsuits to check out the newest waterpark in our area, The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark. What’s better than a quick waterpark getaway in the summer to revive the entire family? Extracurricular Activities What so good about extra? Call them what you will — extracurricular activities, after-school classes, or enrichment programs — what they all have in common is that ‘extra’ that goes a long way to making the school year, well, extra special. As parents we know learning doesn’t stop when the final bell rings. In fact, educational experts contend that extracurricular activities actually help your child to improve their academic performance. These after-school classes and programs offer enriching activities that can keep your children excited and engaged long after their notebook closes for the day. There’s such a wealth of choices — robotics, art, writing, theater, dance, music, gymnastics, science and sports. These programs also allow kids to explore other interests and develop broader perspectives. Not to mention building good self-esteem and providing different social opportunities than they have during the day. Some parents are proponents of having children take classes outside their school district so

they can make friends with other kids to shake up their daily environment. Extracurricular activities can also help develop essential life skills. Whether it’s how to win or lose on a sports field, how to channel creative inspiration in art class, how to be a team player or an entrepreneur, these experiences outside the classroom can be especially rewarding. Exploring other areas of interest that are fun and engaging allows kids to take a break from academics and

that pause can be productive when they sit down later to do homework. The caution is, as with everything, that moderation is best. A child doesn’t need to have an activity every day of the week, in fact too much of a good thing can be — well, detrimental. The goal is to go for balance. And if that means your child has to pick and choose one activity over another then you have taught them another important skill, how to make choices and live with them.

Organizing Back-to-School 5 fast tips from a pro

his Mother’s Day as a wellintentioned gift from my mom, I received the Marie Kondo bestselling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She had seen my struggles with organization in a three-kid household and was tired of hearing me stress about lost trip permission slips or missing shin guards. I needed an organization overhaul and fast. Only problem was after reading a fraction of the book, I misplaced it somewhere in my house and couldn’t find it for months. It was time to call in advice from the pros and luckily, I knew just the person — Westchester-based Katy Winter of Katy’s Organized Home, a professional home organizer with clients throughout the county, New York City and Miami. As a fellow mom of three, Winter knows how kids and their clutter needed to be reined in and how a streamlined and organized home leads to lower stress levels for the family. So with the school season approaching, I wanted to glean some wisdom from her and whip my home in shape just in time for September while encouraging my kids to take an active role in the process. Here are a few of her most helpful tips:

1. Create a drop zone I don’t know about your house but the minute my kids enter the house from school, it looks like a tornado hit the entryway. Backpacks strewn all over the floor, shoes thrown carelessly about. Despite my hours of navigating Pinterest drooling over customized built-in mudrooms, Winter insists that you do not

Use hooks for backpacks and coats and baskets for accessories such as hats and gloves. need to have a swoon-worthy mudroom but instead a drop zone that oozes functionality. She encourages clients to think about how your kids enter the house. Is it though a garage or front door? She is a big fan of hooks for their backpacks and coats. Winter also likes to use baskets for other accessories such as hats and gloves and if you have multiple children, a basket per child (rather than sorting them by item) is best so that you aren’t rummaging through the basket trying to find matching gloves while rushing to the school bus in the morning. If your children are enrolled in after-school activities, it is useful to have bags (e.g. sports, dance, gymnastics) for each activity with hooks or cubby space available for that too.

2. Enlist your kids to make their beds I’ve read many studies that say that people who make their beds in the morning are happier and more productive. Still, I was falling short on this most days and never actually thought to teach my kids this vital skill. “Kids as young as 3 years old can learn to make their bed. We tend to do it for them because it saves us time but if you take the time to teach this habit at an early age, you are instilling a life-long habit for your child,” says Winter. We spend a third of our lives in bed and it should be a cozy place to sleep, read and relax. Winter suggests these easy steps to teach your child how to make their bed: 1. Take off the pillow 2. Pull up the sheet and blanket 3. Put the pillow back on When you walk into anyone’s bedroom, the bed is the first thing you notice because visually it takes up a lot of space. “When you have your child straighten their bed, they are straightening a big part of their room,” explains Winter. I’m making a huge mental note of this and I promise to change our slovenly ways. 3. Make your kids pros at snack time When my kids enter the house after school, they are usually pretty ravenous and all of them are asking me for different snacks simultaneously. I am tired of constantly saying, “I am not an octopus. I do not have eight arms so you will have to wait.” Instead of being their snack butler, get them involved in this by ensuring that cups, bowls and plates are easily accessible in a bottom drawer

Find a space and make it “homework ready” Winter suggests that you think about where your children do their homework. Is it in their room at a desk, in the kitchen or on the dining room table? No matter where it is, make sure that supplies are easily accessible. If your kids favor the dining, kitchen or living room, create a homework box that can easily be stashed away. Even a shoebox can function as this.

The Juggle is Real for Hilaria Baldwin Hilaria Baldwin gets real with us about being a mom to four under five and her passion for healthy living

ilaria Baldwin is a busy mom. She is married to actor Alec Baldwin, mother to four kids under 5 years old, and a hustling entrepreneur with multiple businesses and passion projects. There is a reason why Hilaria has more than half a million followers on Instagram: despite her glamorous lifestyle, mothers everywhere can relate to her. She isn’t afraid to be honest and raw about the joys and challenges of parenting, documenting the less glamorous side of motherhood on social media. By peeling away the layers of glamour, we see a mother who is willing to be transparent. She helps parents feel that they are not alone when their kids start screaming in public or refuse to eat their vegetables at dinner. Hilaria has recently extended her authentic, transparent approach to more painful subjects. On April 9th 2019, Hilaria shared that she had experienced a miscarriage, thanking her social media followers for their support by saying, “Thank you all for listening, for your support, and for sharing your own personal stories. We are stronger together ... I hope this conversation continues to grow and that we stick together through both the beautiful and challenging moments in life”. For her followers who have experienced this heartbreak, many thanked her for her bravery. According to a recent Op-ed she penned for Glamour, Hilaria felt it was important to share her experience to destigmatize

the experience of miscarriage. Despite the fact that miscarriages are common (10 to 25% of pregnancies are estimated to end in miscarriage), discussing them remains taboo. As her career goes stratospheric, Hilaria ensures she makes her health a priority. With her background as a dancer, she has always been active, and after discovering the benefits of yoga, she trained as a yoga teacher, and then co-founded the New York chain of yoga studios, Yoga Vida. We caught up with Hilaria to chat about her daily routines, how she manages her brood of kids while keeping her marriage to Alec strong, as well as her popular podcast with Daphne Oz, Mom Brain, by Gallery Media Group. You are a busy woman — neither you nor your husband have the typical 9-to-5 job — how do you juggle this along with having four children? I will have days where I work really hard, but then I have days that I can stay home with [the kids]. It is a very luxurious way to work as a mother because it allows you to be really present with your kids, and I realize that it’s quite special that I get to have that. In some ways there is a different balance in that we don’t always have the predictability where you know what we are going to be doing in a month which is kind of nice. If you have a typical 9-to-5 job, you know what May is going to look like. [For our schedule] it keeps it exciting, different, and allows us to be with our kids.

As an advocate for healthy living, are you teaching your children great habits from an early age? Any advice for those of us with picky eaters? It can be very stressful and challenging, but I think the most important thing is to start with the perspective that they eventually start eating more things. You can’t underestimate the power of talking to your kids. When my daughter was 2 years old she just was so talkative. I was asking for different parenting tips and tricks and it was suggested that I just talk to her. I felt so silly in that moment, and I was mind blown because I just needed to talk to my child. Whether it is something at school or picky eating, it’s best to just talk with them and keep it consistent. We had the pediatric nutritionist, Jill Castle, recently on our podcast. She said that it takes almost 50 instances of presenting food to a child to get them to want to try it. She said to make it fun. She gave the example with broccoli that one day you could roast it, and the next day steam it, the next day make broccoli soup. I also put the food in the middle of the table, and the kids get to put it on their plates because one of the things with picky eaters is that it’s a question of control. Especially as someone who has recovered from an eating disorder myself, I don’t want to just tell them, “hey you have to eat this.” If we go to a birthday party and they had cake, we talk about how they feel after. If they say, ‘my tummy kind of hurts,’ it is probably because we ate these things that we don’t typically eat.

Tell us more about why you decided to launch a podcast with your friend Daphne Oz? Daphne Oz, my friend and co-host, is about to have her fourth child, and I have four children. We had a lot of children in a short period, and it was new for us that all of a sudden we couldn’t sleep in on the weekend, we couldn’t just walk out of the house, we had to have child care. So we would just sit and chat for hours and hours. We were saying for a long time, wouldn’t it be fun for our mommy group to be bigger. As we discuss topics on our podcast, you see in the comments that listeners are developing relationships between themselves, giving people support when times are hard, or exciting — it really becomes this nice community. Also, one of the things that makes it very special is that we don’t do a lot of preparation. Both Daphne and I have experience in television where there is a lot of prep. There are questions that you are supposed to ask, lines you are supposed to read, and podcasting isn’t about any of that. If we were in my home and we were sitting on the couch, what would we be chatting about? I think that is one of the reasons that it has become so popular because it is really authentic.

How does yoga help you navigate your everyday life as a mom? Everybody should do a little bit of yoga every single day. Stretching and focusing on your breath helps with stress, overall health, and circulation. Doing yoga as a mom helps me take a moment before I lose my cool if my kids are driving me crazy. If you are aware of your body, you notice when your shoulders start to scrunch up. If I soften my shoulders, I am less likely to lose my temper. Yoga is about practice, it is not about perfection. I always tell my students that it is like learning to touch type. Little by little you start to learn with muscle memory where the letters are. Then you can make words, sentences, and then your thoughts just flow through your fingers.

Hilaria believes that when parenting, you have to do what works for you. She lives by being present for her children and partner, pursuing her personal endeavours, and including yoga and deep breathing into her everyday routine to take on life’s inevitable obstacles. Hilaria told us that yoga is a practice, there is no perfection. The same thing is true

ately when I mention the idea of a family outing, I am usually greeted by at least one ‘tween giving me an eye roll. This is not a proud parenting moment as I am trying to keep my three children (with an age gap of five years between the oldest and youngest) entertained and educated this summer. So when I mentioned a family outing to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodome complete with air shows featuring antique biplanes, their collective antennae went up. All of my kids love flying and with the extra bonus of seeing 40 vintage vehicles from 1900-1940 onsite, their curiosity was piqued. The history of the Aerodome The Old Rhinebeck Aerodome has been around for more than 60 years and it is easy to see why this place has so much appeal, whether you’re an aviation fan or not. It was built by Cole Palen, an aviation mechanic from Poughkeepsie whose lifelong dream was

to open a living museum of vintage aircraft from 1900-1937. In 1950, Roosevelt Field (of the Long Island shopping mall fame) contained air hangars and was a functioning airport. One of those air hangars contained vintage aircraft. In 1951 when the site was designated for the Mall’s development, Palen took his life savings to purchase six vintage aircraft and eventually a farm in Northern Duchess County where the Aerodome today still stands. Air shows that delight The best time to visit the Aerodome is the weekends when they hold air shows at 2 p.m. These fun-filled shows, that last approximately two hours, feature several vintage aircraft doing amazing tricks in the air. The Sunday show is particularly familyfriendly as it contains a vintage fashion show before the aerial demonstration plus a lively cast of entertaining characters. Over a public announcement system a master of ceremony

explains the make, model and a few historical tidbits of each World War I aircraft in the demonstrations. He also provides a glimpse of what life was like in America during this tumultuous time. My kids got a kick out of the skydivers jumping from the aircraft landing with their parachutes on the field. They also enjoyed watching the airplanes perform what my family referred to as “Toilet Paper Ninja” after the popular video game Fruit Ninja. The pilots throw huge swaths of toilet paper in the air and then slice it with their aircraft using bold moves. One of the best features of the Aerodome is how close you are to the airplanes and many of the air pilots stay with their aircraft after the show so that you can ask questions and take photos. The Saturday “History of Flight” show is geared to history buffs but children will still look to the sky in amazement as these aircraft do carefully choreographed performances. Be forewarned though that all air shows are subject to cancellation due to inclement or

windy weather. This can sometimes happen at the last minute as the pilots determine that the wind speeds are too dangerous for these delicate aircraft so it’s best to call beforehand. Rain checks are issued if less than half of the air show is performed and can be used indefinitely. Benches are available to view the shows and there is no reserved seating. The air shows run through Oct. 20 so if you can’t make it there this summer, fall is a good time to visit as you’ll get the added bonus of viewing fall foliage on the ride up. Other on-site activities On one of the weekends we went the air show was cancelled but we still had a great time. We took a ride in a 1927 Ford, stopped at all the antique aircraft and vehicles on display including a perfect replica of the Spirit of St. Louis that was flown by Charles Lindbergh from New York to Paris, and walked the grounds., and took in the on-site museum. For the truly adventurous in spirit, they also offer biplane rides for 15 minutes (up to four passengers) in a 1929 open-cockpit New Standard D-25 for $100 per person.

Rediscover the Catskills! A new waterpark opens By Andrea White

t’s summer and the Catskills are calling. The premier Hudson Valley destination of decades ago is once again making a splash with the opening of The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark. Just about an hour and a half drive from southern Westchester, the 324 all-suite luxury resort sits on 1,600 acres among the rolling mountains in Monticello. My husband, our three children, and I recently visited for a two-day, one-night stay. We were smiling from the moment we walked into the grand lobby, a bright, colorful, lively space that felt shiny and new (the resort officially opened to the public in April, 2019). Get wet Of course, the real star of The Kartrite is the waterpark. Billed as the largest indoor waterpark in New York, it is 80,000 square feet with nearly a dozen water attractions. With our bathing suits and flip-flops on, we headed in and had the best kind of vacation dilemma - how to choose where to have fun first? We ended up getting our feet wet in the Puddle Ducks area, a shallow adventure lagoon perfect for the littlest visitors. Our 18-month-old son, Aidan, waded right in with his life vest on. (Life vests of all sizes are available inside the waterpark - just take what you need off the rack and return it when finished.) There are four small waterslides and some other creative water features in the Puddle Ducks section. By the end of our second day in the park, Aidan had mastered all of the slides, with a constant smile on his face, though one of us was always waiting to catch him at the bottom! The big kids were itching for some more thrilling activities, and they weren’t disappointed. Our 11-year-old daughter, Ava, headed right for the big waterslides. Her favorite was called the Time Warp. She liked that it was fast, dizzying, and made a big splash. The other slides are called The Krakken (also fast and featuring saucers creating a drop and dive sensation), Jiggerty-

Kartrite features an adventure lagoon, a dump bucket, water sprays and slides plus a lazy river. Ava and Gavin prove everyone can get blissfully wet. Jaggerty (multiple slides where riders on mats can race each other), and Nor’easter (similar in shape to a half pipe). Be aware that there are height restrictions for the waterslides, and there are also many steps to climb to get to the launch points (while carrying your mat or tube). Our 7-year-old son, Gavin, loved the Kartrite Island area which has water spraying at you from all directions, several twisty slides (enjoyable but tamer than the larger ones), and a massive dump bucket that tips over every few minutes. It’s quite the rush to be standing underneath when the water comes pouring down! Ava and Gavin also spent a lot of time trying to shoot hoops in the Cannon Ballers

pool and challenging themselves at the Later Gator Crossing, a rope bridge that participants cross on floating pads. It wasn’t easy, but they did it! Of course, no waterpark would be complete without a lazy river. The Kartrite’s is called Empire Bay, but I wouldn’t exactly call it lazy! The winding path takes you through several cascading water features, so make sure you’re paying attention as you lounge in your tube. For Douglas and me, the best and most relaxing part of the waterpark was the heated, indoor/outdoor pool called Affinity Springs. The water is only three feet deep and it’s a great spot for swimming and soaking in the sun.

Dry out Once you’re back on dry land, there are many other indoor adventures to keep the whole family entertained (for additional fees). You can start with the Playopolis arcade, which is jam-packed with all kinds of games from the classics to today’s interactive video games, plus air hockey and pool tables. There is also a four-lane mini bowling alley, laser tag, a rope obstacle course with zip line, an indoor rock wall, and more. As if that was not enough, the resort offers rotating daily activities such as arts and crafts projects and family movie nights (on a big screen in the lobby), plus there’s a spa, a fitness center, hiking, shopping - they’ve thought of it all. Rest and refueling The accommodations are also top of the line. There are multiple types of rooms to satisfy every family’s needs. We stayed in a Family King Bunk Suite, a spacious room with a king bed, two sets of bunk beds in a separate enclave (Ava and Gavin loved those!), a queen sleeper

sofa, a large TV, a mini-fridge and a microwave. The décor in the rooms and throughout the property is modern, chic, and fun. Last, but not least, let’s talk food. We did not leave the premises during our stay instead we opted for the many food options on site. On our first day in the waterpark, we grabbed lunch from the Surfside Grill (inside the park), which offers quick bites such as burgers, pizza, and salads. That evening, we went a little more upscale for dinner, eating at Bixby’s Tavern & Taproom. The kids’ menu is more than reasonable, with staples such as mac ‘n cheese and peanut butter and jelly. The next morning, we started our day at the resort’s buffet called Eat. Eat. Eat. It has myriad food choices, from an omelet station to French toast and eggs to cereal and pastries. But our favorite eats may have been from Pop’s Sweet Shoppe, a candy shop with a candy wall, cookies, homemade fudge, gelato, and more. My kids have already asked when we can go back to The Kartrite, and I do hope it’s soon. This modern twist on those legendary

6 Timely Tips for Tackling the School Supply List By Meagan Ruffing

’m new to this school thing. My oldest is going in to second grade so I’ve only had one year of buying school supplies under my belt. I will tell you though that I was on it the first year. Waiting for that school supply list was like Christmas morning for me. I couldn’t wait to tackle the necessities needed for my son’s first year of school. I bought the best of the best and even tucked in a few sheets of “Bravo!” stickers for his teacher. Oh, you too? Fast forward to the summer before his second grade school year and I’m already finding ways to save on his long list of supplies. Here’s a few clever ways you can save too. 1. Shop early. Most, if not all of your kids’ supplies are on sale during the summer. Stores are trying to get rid of old inventory to make room for the new, hot off the press products. I didn’t know this until I started paying attention to those clearance items while doing my weekly grocery trips. I started picking up post-it notes that somehow found their way onto to the shelves with $1 price tag. The only difference between those and the $3 to $4 sticky notes were the colors. Light blue as opposed to neon blue? I got this. 2. Reuse. Remember how I told you that I bought the best of the best that first year? Once I saw how many pencils came back with my son at the end of the school year, I thought, there’s no way I’m buying another 24 pencils when I have somehow accumulated over 50. We spent an afternoon sharpening all of these pencils during quiet time and put them nicely in his new pencil box. Old with the new … I like that. 3. Buy generic when you can. I usually leave the name brand stuff alone if I know the off-brand works just as well. I also shop around if I’m already out running other errands. I don’t make special trips to find better prices but just the other day I found myself at an office supply store getting some

things printed when I saw a great sale on crayons. I picked up a few boxes and thought the cashier had actually rung them up wrong; they were even cheaper than what the sign advertised. Score! 4. Resale shops. I never thought to scope out the local resale shops for back-to-school items but I was super excited when I found not one but two backpacks that were in pristine condition for less than $5 each. Once I saw how beat up my son’s got after just one year of school (not to mention I had paid $20+ on this specific superhero backpack) I quickly bought those and they are now ready to go for his second grade year and his sister’s second year of preschool. 5. Donate if you can. I like saving money. But if I do find school supplies at a good price, I like to buy a few more and donate them to my kids’ teachers just in case there are any kids who can’t afford school supplies or maybe forgot theirs on the first day of school. 6. Dry erase markers. Don’t you wish you could just erase some of those high prices from the packaging of these super expensive school supplies? Why are these markers so expensive? I don’t know the answer to that question but I do know how to save a little bit on these. First, always stock up if you see them on sale (summertime) and second, buy in bulk. It will be more money up front but cheaper per marker. Or, you can always split the package with a friend whose kids need the markers as well. So grab a friend, load your kids in the car, and head out early for your school supplies this year. If you’re late to the game, no worries, they’ll be another school year starting before you know it.
