Welcome About Schofield & Sims Schofield & Sims has been a leading publisher of educational resources for over a century. Focusing particularly on maths, English and Science at the primary level, Schofield and Sims books aim to provide all pupils, regardless of ability, with a strong grounding in reading, writing and arithmetic.
Why choose Schofield & Sims books? Written by experienced teachers, many Schofield & Sims resources are suitable for whole-school use. All are designed to support individual learning needs, with the following features underpinning every series. • A rigorous approach that improves test scores – in the national tests, in 11+ and in common entrance examinations. • A broad curriculum – that extends and transcends the National Curriculum, helping children to acquire the broader skills needed both for education and for life. • A clear structure – which helps children to learn systematically and to build on prior learning. • Sustained repetition to reinforce learning – so that core knowledge may be accessed immediately and key skills become second nature. • Continuous assessment – ensuring that you are able to check the level at which each child is working, monitor progress and identify strengths and weaknesses. • Steady progression – because the regular introduction of new learning increases children’s academic capacity, preventing boredom and allowing children to fulfil their potential.
Benefits for schools and teachers Schofield & Sims is pleased to offers schools and teachers the following guarantees. • Preferential prices – all school orders, wherever in the world they originate and regardless of the size of the order, qualify for the discounted school price. • Free delivery – delivery to all schools in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe is free of charge. • Free samples – free sample copies for evaluation are provided on request. • Taster packs – introductory sets of books at reduced prices. • School visits – the Schofield & Sims regional advisers are happy to visit your school to discuss both whole-school programmes and individual resources. Essential Mental Arithmetic J W Adams, R P Beaumont, E Spavin and L Spavin (edited by T R Goddard) At the request of Key Stage 3 teachers, Schofield & Sims has rebranded Mental Arithmetic for use with older students. Essential Mental Arithmetic is a repackaged edition – with different covers and the same rigorous content. Perfect for recovery work and for building functional skills in mathematics, Essential Mental Arithmetic: • gives intensive practice matched exactly to ability level, supporting differentiation and personalised learning • provides one-per-student workbooks that encourage students to monitor their own progress and take pride in their work • enables students to succeed in areas of maths where they have previously failed, embedding and securing learning that has previously eluded them
Use for Year 7 maths catch-up
• gives students the solid grounding in maths that is vital if they are to gain proficiency in other subjects, both academic and vocational • prepares students for full numeracy in education, training and daily life. The series can be used: • with students who struggle with maths materials designed for their age-group • as a baseline skills programme at the start of Key Stage 3, or at the beginning of any maths-related course • with the I can do maths teaching method (see page 54). An Essential Mental Arithmetic Entry test is available to help you determine the level at which a new student is working; this is downloadable from the Essential Mental Arithmetic page on the Schofield & Sims website. The Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide provides a full introduction to the series, together with further assessment resources: see page 53 for full details.
Suitable for use with the I can do maths teaching method (see page 54).
The Mental Arithmetic Answers books listed on page 53 are fully compatible with the Essential Mental Arithmetic workbooks and help to make marking quick and easy.

Understanding Reasoning Siân Goodspeed and Rebecca Brant Understanding Reasoning is a mini-series of learning workbooks that helps pupils to understand and answer correctly reasoning questions of the kind that are used in the 11+, 12+, 13+ and other school selection tests. The two books in this series look separately at verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Each book provides step-by-step explanations and examples together with practical workbook-style activities. Practice pages at the end of each section enable users to apply the techniques they have learned and correct answers are provided at the back of each book for quick and easy marking. A combined index and glossary ensures that all users understand the vocabulary required for the explanation and discussion of question content.
Understanding Verbal Reasoning includes the following question types:
Understanding Reasoning may be used flexibly: pupils can either work right through the books or focus on particular question types that they find difficult. The books are ideal for independent working but may also be used to support focused whole-class, small group or one-to-one teaching.
• alphabet and word codes • patterns • vocabulary questions
This text explains the topic and gives an example. Pupils will need to read it before they start answering the questions.
• spelling questions • mathematical questions • problem solving. Understanding Non-verbal Reasoning includes the following question types: • identifying shapes and patterns • missing shapes and patterns
Annotations guide pupils through every stage of the thinking process.
• rotating shapes and patterns • codes and logic • combined shapes.
Hints provide extra tips that help to make answering easier.

Siân Goodspeed and Rebecca Brant
The Rapid Reasoning Tests provide intensive, timed practice in all the question types that feature in the 11+ and other school selection tests Six carefully graded books are available for each of the two strands, non-verbal and verbal, and every book contains a year’s work – divided into three for term-by-term use The focus from the outset is on fast and accurate work and all pupils will quickly acquire essential reasoning skills Whereas full-length practice tests may be too time-consuming for frequent use, these short timed tests – taking between five and 12 minutes to complete – are ideal for regular independent work sessions, in school or at home Pull-out answers facilitate marking and a scoring chart with Action notes recommends next steps
Target times vary depending on how difficult the questions are likely to be for pupils within the age range specified.
