Why choose Complete Comprehension?
Complete Comprehension is a whole-school programme designed to equip pupils with everything they need to become strong, successful readers.
The Complete Comprehension series will help to:
Series structure
The series breaks down the complex process of reading comprehension into separate skills that closely match the curriculum requirements for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Each teaching unit introduces one of these skills through a modelling session, which is then practised using test-style questions.
• reduce teacher workload – each book contains detailed lesson plans that include pre-teaching and extension tasks, as well as carefully selected texts
• increase cultural capital – every teaching unit has background knowledge built in to help children understand what they are reading, as well as paired texts to encourage comparisons and discussion
• widen pupil vocabulary – each book uses carefully selected extracts to provide the foundational word knowledge that children need to access the curriculum
• build reading confidence through targeted skills – each unit focuses on a target skill that children need to develop in order to become good readers
• grow a reading repertoire –engaging texts from a range of genres will encourage reading for pleasure among children
• develop links with wider subject areas – the series provides a progressive, reading-rich programme for you to build upon and embed into your school’s curriculum.

A short synopsis of the text that links to other passages or curriculum subjects.
The Get ready section prepares children to engage with the text and draw on background knowledge of the genre and subject matter.
The Language toolkit identifies vocabulary terms for pre-teaching and includes a bank of supporting activities.
A Reading list features related texts and external resources for every teaching unit.

Each teaching unit focuses on a comprehension skill that is essential to meaningful reading. The target skill is introduced through a modelling session within the unit and is then practised through a set of Let’s try… questions.
The Target skill is clearly signposted at the top of the modelling session and throughout the unit.
The Modelling panel provides detailed guidance and questions, as well as prompts to keep children engaged.
All Let’s try… questions can also be downloaded as slides, along with a variety of other resources.
Mark schemes are provided for all pupil questions, and offer guidance on common areas of difficulty.

Resources for pupils
Text passages have been carefully selected and designed in a way that makes them easy to distribute to each pupil, who should be encouraged to make their own highlights and annotations.
A short, child-friendly Introduction helps pupils to access the text. This can be read aloud to pupils before reading the text.
Texts are designed to be easily photocopied and are also available online to download.
Text passages cover a broad range of topics, allowing you to make links with other areas of the curriculum and build wider knowledge.
Many of the texts include illustrations that can be discussed before reading the text.

Each unit includes a set of five Target-skill questions to enable children to practise applying the target comprehension skill, as well as a set of Mix it up! questions that offer practice in a range of comprehension skills.
The Target-skill questions can be used to practise the skill after modelling the Let’s try… questions for your class.
Each session ends with a set of Mix it up! questions that offer practice across a range of skills and could form homework.
Informal assessments
There are seven units to complete each term, leaving the remaining weeks free to spend on other reading work. Each term’s teaching units are followed by one of the three optional Progress checks. These are designed to be used as a helpful transition towards more formal assessment resources and provide practice for the reading component of the national tests (SATs).

Comprehension texts
Each Complete Comprehension book contains up to 24 text passages which are arranged in themed pairs and linked by either author or subject matter.
The texts have been carefully selected in order to provide a rich and diverse reading repertoire that can be embedded into your school’s wider curriculum.
These pairings have been planned to facilitate discussion and comparison of related texts as you move through the book.
In addition to discussing the units in their intended pairs, there are many other links you can make between the texts in each book, including discussing texts of the same genre. As many of the links are cross-curricular, these extra class discussions can be a useful way to strengthen children’s background knowledge.
Beetle Boy, a popular fictional story about an adventurous beetle enthusiast, has been paired with Beetle Boy: The Beetle Collector’s Handbook, a factual book written in the style of an old guide. The pairing of these texts gives children the chance to explore the similarities and differences between them, as well as explore other topics such as science and nature.
