Why choose My Letters and Sounds? My Letters and Sounds is a DfE-validated resource that supports teachers to ensure that most children meet or exceed the expected national standards in Reception and Year 1. It provides a systematic and rigorous approach to teaching phonics to all pupils, including the most disadvantaged. Developed by expert authors, the scheme offers your staff everything they need to deliver effective phonics instruction, allowing them to concentrate on how to teach, rather than what to teach, and focus on the needs of their class.

Daily lesson plans that reduce teacher workload My Letters and Sounds provides a lesson plan for every day of your phonics teaching. Activities are engaging, multi-sensory and deliberately limited in number to promote an efficient pace of delivery. Each lesson is designed to take around twenty minutes, extending to half an hour as the children move through the programme.

Each lesson plan spread begins with a list of the resources – digital and photocopiable – needed for that week’s teaching.

Teaching follows a consistent sequence: Revisit and review, Teach, Practise, Apply, Assess.

Beautifully illustrated Phonics Readers The My Letters and Sounds Phonics Readers are engaging, fully decodable stories that perfectly match the progression of the My Letters and Sounds SSP programme. Over 100 brand-new readers feature contemporary imagery that gives the look and feel of ‘real’, high-quality picture books. Vibrant illustrations fully and directly support the story texts.

Each book is written in natural language and focuses on themes and experiences that will appeal to young children.

Variations in sentence type and structure helps develop children’s comprehension skills.

Multi-sensory learning The My Letters and Sounds teaching guidance provides a range of multi-sensory resources to support the introduction of new grapheme-phoneme correspondence (GPCs), such as visual mnemonics, audio to listen and engage with, and physical activities, like tracing and sky-writing the letter shape using a range of materials and textures.

Phonics Readers The My Letters and Sounds Phonics Readers are exciting, fully decodable stories that perfectly match the progression of the My Letters and Sounds SSP programme. Designed to be used from the second week of Phase Two, they allow children to apply their phonics skills to reading ‘real’ books from a very early stage. A variety of attractive, contemporary illustration styles give the readers the look and feel of real, high-quality children’s picture books. Written in natural language, with plenty of humour, the story texts focus on themes and experiences that will appeal to young children from a variety of different backgrounds. Vibrant illustrations are closely related to each story.

New GPCs and tricky words are gradually introduced to ensure children are given focused practice.

8

Digraphs and trigraphs are underlined to remind children that the group of letters makes one sound.

Tricky words are highlighted in blue.

Text devices such as captions and labels are gradually introduced.

Non-fiction stories appear from Phase Three to develop children’s reading-for-information skills.

Increased space is allocated to text rather than pictures.

High-quality photography is used in some non-fiction books.

Less familiar and some specialised vocabulary is used in later non-fiction texts.

Non-fiction stories in My Letters and Sounds Non-fiction books appear from Phase Three of My Letters and Sounds, where they consist of narrative non-fiction texts that combine fictional storytelling with real-life events. These books help to develop children’s reading-for-information skills and provide a gentle introduction to non-fiction text devices, such as captions and labels. In Phase Five, non-fiction texts are broadened out to also include information non-fiction and instructional non-fiction stories, which feature a wider variety of text devices, such as simple charts and diagrams.

How to find the right readers If you are looking to supplement your current decodable readers, we recommend using the My Letters and Sounds Readers Phonics Coverage Chart to choose your books. This will help you assess how closely these readers match your school’s phonics programme in terms of the progression of grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GCPs) and tricky words. You can find the Readers Phonics Coverage Chart on the Schofield & Sims website or by scanning the QR code below.

What does fidelity mean in phonics? Whilst the Department for Education recommends schools take an approach to teaching phonics that is both rigorous and systematic, they do not say that you have to use all resources from a single scheme. Instead, fidelity means that your phonics resources should exactly match the GPCs in the order that you are teaching them. You can use different decodable readers and teaching resources so long as they match your progression and your approach is achieving strong results for all pupils.

Teacher’s Handbooks The My Letters and Sounds Teacher’s Handbooks for Reception and Year 1 include everything you need to teach systematic synthetic phonics with confidence. Each Handbook follows a simple structure, with content divided into teaching guidance (including advice on assessment), lesson plans and photocopiable resources, with additional resources available to download. Each Handbook provides a high level of support, both for teachers that are new to phonics teaching and for more experienced practitioners looking for planning that matches the latest best practice. Step-by-step instructions guide you through key teaching processes.

The Notes include strategies to use if some children struggle to grasp the new concepts.

Banks of activities are provided to facilitate regular practice of each phonics skill. These activities are also used in the weekly Lesson plans.

Assessment My Letters and Sounds helps you to track your children’s understanding over the course of each phase. Daily formative assessment is made manageable using ‘snapshot’ assessments of a different group of children during each phonics teaching session. Advice on summative assessment is also given at the end of each phase, helping you to choose appropriate next steps. In addition, optional Assessment checks enable you to assess a particular aspect of a child’s phonic knowledge, such as recognition and recall of graphemes, or spelling of tricky words. The summative assessment guidance in the Teacher’s Handbooks suggests when to use these checks with the whole class, but they can also be used with individual children as required.

A Daily assessment schedule helps you to divide your class into groups and focus on certain phonics skills each day.

In each phase, there are separate downloadable assessment resources to evaluate children’s developing phonics skills.

You can also find My Letters and Sounds on the online assessment and tracking programme, Phonics Tracker.

Pupil Books These write-in workbooks can be used at school or at home to practise the key phonics skills of grapheme recognition and recall, blending to read and segmenting to spell, and build children’s confidence in reading and writing captions and sentences. With a page or double-page spread for every new learning point in My Letters and Sounds, the books provide highly targeted practice and integrated revision of recently learnt GPCs and tricky words. Carefully designed to appeal to young learners, the activities are consistent and predictable, and, as the children do not need to complete all the activities in one go, the books are easy to fit into your school timetable.

Activities use the mnemonic as a reminder to reinforce the new letter shape and its sound.

Each new GPC is introduced in a predictable way to encourage greater independence in the children.

Activities cover recently learned GPCs.

Workbooks are useful for providing additional support to children who need help keeping up with their peers.

Writing opportunities become increasingly challenging as children move through the programme.

In Phase Five, familiar activities are used to introduce new graphemes, but there are more words to read to reflect the children’s growing stamina.

Answers to the Phonics Practice Pupil Books are free to download from the Schofield & Sims website.

Support for parents and other adults Listening to children read is an essential part of phonics and one that requires cooperation from parents and carers. Children will regularly bring home a decodable reader to practice but some adults may be unfamiliar with systematic phonics, which is why My Letters and Sounds provides guidance throughout the programme. The inside covers of every reader include tips and activities to help adults as they listen to the children read. Child-friendly definitions are provided for unfamiliar words that can be discussed and explored prior to reading. Suggested questions about the cover illustration and book title help to stimulate learning, while comprehension questions encourage children to talk about the story after they have finished reading. The GPCs and tricky words included in each book are listed.

Questions about the cover illustration and title introduce the text.

Comprehension questions check children’s understanding of the text.

Child-friendly definitions are provided for any unfamiliar vocabulary.

Additional tips for reading with children can be downloaded from the Schofield & Sims website.
