Pupil Books
Schofield & Sims Spelling is a structured programme for pupils in Years 1 to 6, comprising six pupil books, a teacher’s guide, a teacher’s resource book and a range of free downloads available from the Schofield & Sims website. Fully matched to the National Curriculum, it gives children intensive practice in using their phonic knowledge to spell words, not only preparing them for the national tests but also encouraging them towards effective spelling for life.
Based on the model ‘teach, practise, apply and assess’, the books build pupils’ knowledge of spellings by:
• systematically introducing spelling conventions and revising those already taught
• exploring word and spelling structures
• suggesting strategies for remembering common ‘tricky’ or ‘exception’ words
• providing regular transcription practice through tailored dictation activities
• helping pupils to monitor and correct their own spelling.
The main learning point is introduced at the start with relevant examples provided
Activities draw on a large bank of question types, ensuring variety
Illustrations are kept to a minimum to keep pages clean and uncluttered
Final activity allows pupils to use recent learning in writing whole sentences
‘I can’ statements encourage pupils to take pride in their achievements
Whole-school spelling practice
Each Spelling pupil book is divided into six sections containing five main pages that introduce new spelling conventions, followed by a Tricky words or Topic words page. Books 2–6 also include regular Revision sections, featuring crossword-style clues and cloze and proofreading activities. The main pages in the pupil books follow a clear and regular structure, consisting of:
• Remember – a child-friendly description of the spelling pattern, strategy, rule or guideline that is the ‘focus’ of the session
• Try it – quick-fire questions featuring words using the spelling focus
• Read–cover–write – practice activities using the spelling focus in whole sentences. Correct answers at the back of each book enable pupils to mark their own work, laying solid foundations for independent study.
Transcribing words in sentences builds vocabulary and consolidates learning
❝ Accurate spelling improves fluency in writing. Pupils who consistently apply their spelling skills in sustained writing are more likely both to communicate clearly and achieve academic success.❞

Tricky high-frequency words and subject-specific topic words are introduced alongside routine spellings
A simple methodology helps pupils to learn spellings that do not follow expected patterns
Teacher’s Guide
The Spelling Teacher’s Guide supports the systematic and explicit teaching of strategies, rules, guidelines and patterns to help pupils throughout your school to make good progress in spelling. The main part of the book comprises detailed Teaching notes – one set for every page in the six pupil books. Clearly laid out and in a format that is easy to refer to in the classroom, each set of notes:
• suggests how best to introduce each learning point or ‘focus’
• clarifies the detail of the focus and exactly what should be covered
• recommends ways of modelling, explaining and exploring the focus to develop pupils’ understanding
• refers you, where appropriate, to relevant photocopiable resources in the Teacher’s Resource Book (see pages 6–7)
• provides you with a regular weekly dictation sentence tailored to the learning point.
Each set of Teaching notes corresponds to a page in the pupil books, making planning easy
Teaching sessions are short and direct, lasting about 10 minutes
Clear references are given to photocopiable extension and revision activities, as well as prompts and reminders
Target words from the current focus are underlined in each dictation sentence
The guide also includes a full introduction to the series and in-depth guidance on how to implement each of the four stages of the ‘teach, practise, apply and assess’ teaching model.
Further guidelines for use include advice on: timetabling and organising spelling sessions; differentiation, grouping and partner work; spelling in the context of writing; and using the activities, prompts and reminders provided in the Teacher’s Resource Book. There is also detailed information on the different assessment options available, covering ongoing assessment, weekly assessment and periodic assessment.
Other topics covered include strategies for spelling tricky words and topic words, ways in which you can support less able learners and record keeping. To aid planning, a Scope and sequence section helpfully summarises the content of each pupil book.
❝ The scope of the programme is impressive and there’s an overview of each area of focus to be taught. The teaching notes detail what you need to cover and recommend ways of modelling the content. They aren’t too long either – just right, in fact.❞

Teacher’s Resource Book
The Spelling Teacher’s Resource Book features a comprehensive collection of photocopy masters to help you get the most out of Schofield & Sims Spelling. Part 1 of the book supports the ‘teach’, ‘practise’ and ‘apply’ stages of the teaching model and contains the following materials.
• Extension and revision activities – resources that can be used to reinforce or extend the learning points from the pupil books, such as Additional word lists that extend the range of words provided in pupil books; Word sort and Word collector activities to consolidate learning; and Spelling logs for selecting and recording additional words to practise.
• Reminders and prompts – resources that encourage pupils to apply what they have learnt in spelling sessions in their own independent writing, such as Target reminders to record spelling targets and blank versions of the ‘Tricky word’ and ‘Topic word’ logs found in the pupil books.
Additional word lists can be photocopied and given to pupils to learn at home
Word collector sheets encourage pupils to investigate different spelling patterns
Part 2 provides materials that support the ‘assess’ stage of the teaching model. The resources cover ongoing and periodic assessment and include:
• a Target and progress tracking sheet in which to record the spelling targets set for a group and to summarise evidence towards the targets
• Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Target tracking sheets for pupils to record progress towards personal spelling targets
• a photocopiable Dictation assessment sheet with space for five weekly dictation assessments
• a bank of cloze-style dictation tests that assess cumulative learning, and everything you need to administer them, including photocopiabe Response sheets and Error analysis sheets
• an easy-to-use record sheet for assessing spelling within samples of independent writing.
Photocopiable Response sheets are provided for termly cloze dictation tests
An Error analysis sheet for each dictation test allows you to identify problem areas
