SEEKERS OF THE LOST CAVERN!
Award-winning duo THOMAS DUNCAN-WATT and SUREN PERERA bring us Tomb of the Zombie King — the first book in this exciting new, funny, fast-paced adventure series like Indiana Jones meets Ninja Kid!
Q&A with Thomas Duncan-Watt
THOMAS DUNCAN-WATT is a multi-award-winning screenwriter and author whose credits include the BAFTA-nominated Dennis & Gnasher, Emmy Awardwinning Beat Bugs and Australia's highest-rated drama series, Home & Away Thomas was also the Head Writer and Co-showrunner on the sci-fi series Space Nova, for which he won the coveted John Hinde Award for excellence in Science Fiction.
Though not a full-fledged archaeologist yet, his adventures do take him around the world. As such, would really love his own hovership.
Illustrator SUREN PERERA, is an award-winning animation director, show creator, storyboard artist and book illustrator. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, he now lives in Montreal, Canada, and divides his time between both countries.
Can you tell us in your own words about your new book, Seekers of the Lost Cavern #1: Tomb of the Zombie King?
Tomb of the Zombie King is the first action-packed adventure of Davern Cavern, an accident-prone 10-year-old on a worldwide hunt to find his missing dad; famous explorer (and 5-times cover model of ‘Heroic Moustache Monthly Magazine’) Sir Charles Cavern!
Where did the idea for the series, Seekers of the Lost Cavern come from?
When I was a kid I loved action, adventure, comedy and a good mystery — preferably involving a lost temple or haunted tomb. So, I decided to combine them to write the book series I would’ve stayed up past my bedtime reading with a torch under the covers.
What are you hoping readers get from the series?
If Seekers of the Lost Cavern were a meal, I’d hope that each adventure gives readers a big helping of action, a generous serve of mystery, and a whole buffet of belly laughs.
What were some of your own favourite childhood memories of books and reading? Have you always been an adventure fan?
When I was a kid my book and comic book heroes were Tintin, Indiana Jones and Captain Kirk. Unfortunately, where I grew up in suburban Sydney there weren’t many international mysteries to solve, ancient artefacts to uncover, or reptilian aliens to battle. So, my friends and I just made up our own.
Do you have any tips for aspiring writers? When I was in primary school I submitted my first short story to a teacher. He gave it a ‘D’ because he said it was
‘too far-fetched’. Well, I’m glad I paid zero attention. After a career writing about pirates, space travellers and archaeological explorers, ‘far-fetched’ is now the brand!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Shape-shifting. Then again, who wouldn’t want to be able to turn into a famous person, or a tyrannosaurus rex, or a supersonic jet plane that can take your friends on free trips around the world whenever you felt like it?
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Telling my friends and family ‘dad’ jokes. When it comes to annoying puns, I’m like the world’s best scarecrow: outstanding in my field.
