SCHOMBURG CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN BLACK CULTURE

Where Every Month Is Black History Month

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located in Harlem, New York, is a research unit of The New York Public Library system. It is recognized as one of the leading institutions focusing exclusively on African-American, African Diaspora, and African experiences. Started with the collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg more than 85 years ago, the Schomburg collects, preserves, and provides access to materials documenting black life locally, nationally, and internationally. It also promotes the study and interpretation of the history and cultures of peoples of African descent. Today, the Schomburg serves the community not just as a center and a library, but also as a place that encourages lifelong learning and inspires exploration. SCHOMBURGCENTER.ORG 2

TUESDAY, JUNE 3 AT 6:30 P.M.

Talks at the Schomburg: Stuck in Segregation Throughout history, legal and de facto forms of segregation have restricted the ability of black communities to fully access housing, education, and banking. A long-fought battle before the civil rights movement, the complexity of today’s patterns of segregation takes many forms within public policy, income, and racial discrimination. This provocative conversation will explore new ideas, history, and the contemporary construction of segregation. Join panelists Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Atlantic), Patrick Sharkey (New York University), and Richard Rothstein (Economic Policy Institute) and moderator Farai Chideya. Presented in collaboration with the Sidney Hillman Foundation.

TUESDAY, JULY 8 AT 6:30 P.M.

Films at the Schomburg: Freedom Summer Veteran award-winning director Stanley Nelson captures the volatile months of the 1964 Freedom Summer through remarkable period footage and the firsthand testimonies of volunteers who were transformed by their time in Mississippi. A talkback will follow the screening with Nelson and voices from the film. Stanley Nelson, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, Emmy Award–winning MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellow, and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is the director of 12 documentary features. He is co-founder of Firelight Media, which provides technical education and professional support to emerging documentarians.

SCHOMBURG ON LOCATION

WRITING BLACKNESS

JUNE 6–AUGUST 3, 2014

West 155th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue

Writing Blackness, a contemporary exploration of the Harlem Renaissance Salon, examines “salons” as sites for cultural production fostering intellectual and arts movements, from the Harlem Renaissance to Négritude, mapping literary voices and publications from 1920 to 1935. The exhibit focuses in particular on the function of the literary salons as a convening physical space where dialogue and exchange of ideas was fostered among intellectuals and cultural producers. Writing Blackness aims to incite intellectual engagement by making archival materials accessible and “activating” the Schomburg Collection in a living space—literally, a twobedroom apartment in an affordable housing and an educational and cultural arts mixeduse development—where ideas are exchanged, and argued, and where all participants are equally equipped and invested in the conversation.

RELATED PROGRAM SATURDAY, JUNE 14 AT 3 P.M.

WRITING BLACKNESS LIVE

Make a trip to Sugar Hill where the Schomburg Center will host a salon reimaging the Harlem salons of the 1920s and 1930s, featuring special guests and musicians. This program is a collaboration with No Longer Empty’s If you build it, on view in Sugar Hill—the legendary epicenter of the Harlem Renaissance. The project is inspired and presented in collaboration with Broadway Housing Communities and architect David Adjaye’s utopian approach to housing and architecture. All apartments in the 13-floor building are dedicated to affordable housing as well an entire floor for early childhood education and the future Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling. The exhibition will feature some 20 local, national and international artists’ works, which include installations, photography, and performances made specifically for this exhibition.
