Taiko West Japanese Taiko Drumming Workshops
Taiko West’s Main Music Leader is James Barrow. Of the few Taiko teachers in the UK, James is the only one with a licence to teach traditional rhythms from a Taiko preservation society in Japan (Hiroshima), and he is also the only one with a professional qualification in Community Music (Goldsmiths College, University of London). He has been playing Taiko for over 20 years and teaching it in the UK since 1993. Workshops are a hands-on experience, ensuring that all participants spend the maximum time practicing and playing the drums. The method and approach encourages focus and concentration on the techniques and rhythms, while also helping participants to relax and have fun. The aim is to give participants an experience of Japanese Taiko Drumming that is engaging and energizing and instill the confidence and self belief for the group to successfully "perform" a simple piece by the end of the session. A typical day might start with a demonstration performance, followed by up to 5 workshop sessions which will include the following: a brief presentation and explanation about the drums, how they are made, their cultural background etc.; short physical warm up, practicing correct posture and hand grip of sticks, practicing basic simple movements; practicing basic rhythms and experimenting with varying the tempo and strength. They then break into groups and learn complimentary rhythms, begin overlaying them and finally structure those rhythms together to create a "song". The workshops use up to 15 mostly rope-tightened taikos, accompanied by traditional Japanese hand cymbals and kane bell-like percussion, plus the yokobue bamboo flute. The current maximum number per session is around 30 participants (larger groups can sometimes be accommodated) working together in 2 teams of 15, rotating at pace on and off the drums. Length of workshops vary from 50 minutes to 2 hours plus, depending on your school timetable and aims. Schools typically book half days or full days, extending up to 5-day residencies for developmental performance projects.

They have been working together for the past nine years providing traditional circus orientated entertainment, theatrical and media make-up workshops and circus skills workshops to children and adults alike.
“My Year 1 class are still talking about your visit to Eastway, a great success!” Judi Smitton, Eastway Primary School, Moreton “We just wanted to say a really big thank you for making the children's last day at pre-school a fab one.” Jo Smith and all the gang at Little Gems PreSchool, Little Neston Mini Circus Shows are performed by Kuki & Krums the clowns with their mini stage to set the scene. The clowns are on mobile microphones and the shows come with elaborate lighting and sound equipment. A 1 hour fun, colourful show involves acrobatics, clown comedy sketches, music, dancing, puppets, magic, competitions and lots of audience participation. The contents of the shows are designed to entertain the entire school including the teachers. Special Christmas Mini Circus Shows come with Christmas decorations, the theme of Christmas in Circus and a grand finale by special guests Father Christmas and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer marionettes. The shows are suitable for up to 250 children seated indoors, aged 3 – 11 years. They can be provided as a mid or end of term treat, used to brighten up a Fete, Fair or Fun Day or as something special at Christmas, an alternative to the Pantomime. The shows are renewed each year, so schools return year in year out for more fun with the clowns. Theatrical & Media Make-up Workshops involve skills that are highly challenging to learn as the techniques used are more complicated and elaborate than every day make-up and use unfamiliar materials, which means that male and female participants start at the same level. Theatrical make-up also requires the use of the imagination and artistic talents and a good deal of patience and cooperation. Participants work in pairs and at close proximity so they need to show respect and understanding for one another and they need to be self motivated and self disciplined to achieve the required effects within a limited time schedule.
14
Workshops can be arranged in support of the curriculum, as part of an Arts Festival, in preparation for a School Play or as a fun introduction to a training day. They are ideal for male and female students aged 11 and over. All equipment and materials are supplied and students can learn how to do Black eyes, Grazes, Cuts, Basic wounds, Bruises, Facial hair, Ageing, Illness, Burns, Photographic and Stage make-up. Individual workshops last 2 – 3 hours for up to 30 pupils, workshop days for 4 – 6 hours (30 to 60 pupils) and a full week can be arranged to culminate in a demonstration of work.

Integrate Education Nurturing Creative Potential
Employers want creative people who see connections, are problem solvers, have ideas, are innovative, and communicate well while 60% of children in primary schools today will work in jobs not yet invented. In attempting to explore the requirements of an education system to equip students for such a changing world, the government has prioritised creative learning and thinking skills. Integrate Education believe that the skills required of children must first be fostered in staff so that teachers have the confidence and inspiration to implement new ways of working. Their work has featured in TES and NUT Teacher Magazine and been recommended by the U.N.’s educational arm UN. Schools are discovering the cost and efficiency benefits of organising Inset in-house rather than sending staff on expensive courses which disrupt pupil learning. Integrate can visit you to deliver whole school inset, looking at generic approaches to Creative Teaching and Learning, Thinking Skills, or offer bespoke departmental inset in specific Art forms. INSET packages develop practical skills with teachers to enable confident planning, assessment and delivery of a creative curriculum. Practitioners can come and work alongside one teacher, developing and co-delivering schemes of work to children, or whole staff can be taken through practical and transferable activities. A valuable form of INSET training is to observe one of Integrate’s experienced staff in action, working with pupils for you to see first hand, how easy some of the techniques are and how readily pupils engage. All exemplar lessons are based on tried and tested approaches to creative teaching and learning and utilise aspects of arts based pedagogy to access a wide range of curriculum areas. Integrate Education have also been engaged in consultation work with schools to examine areas such as curriculum development, creative curriculum, dramatic enquiry, dance/drama in education, kinaesthetic approaches to teaching and learning, partnership development, CPD, or GCSE & A' Level

School Radio Create your own school radio station Radio is ideally suited to educational establishments such as primary and secondary schools, and higher education centres. A school radio station provides a cost effective and engaging platform for your students to express their opinions, and to develop communication and listening skills while having lots of fun.
“Since the start of Radio Warren at the beginning of the autumn term all pupils have had the opportunity to broadcast over the airwaves and The Big Friday Show is the highlight of the school week. There is evidence of a powerful impact of pupils’ speaking and listening skills.” Julie Wharton, SEN Inspector regarding Shirley Warren School
Radio is an inclusive activity for all ages and abilities which is less intimidating than other media, encourages speaking and listening skills, builds confidence and teamwork and provides a ‘voice’ for your students ideas and opinions. School Radio packages are designed to provide all the equipment that you will need to start your school radio station and a simple interface means that children of all ages and abilities will be able to get involved. Radio can be applied to education in a number of exciting ways. First there are the obvious areas like communication skills, drama and music but there are endless opportunities for schools to explore with their radio equipment. As more schools turn to radio as an educational tool, the range of projects and ideas is growing exponentially. • Make an Advert - pupils create a radio advert for a fictional product. They decide on the product, research similar products, come up with a name and marketing concept for the product. They write a script for the advert, record any necessary sound effects before finally producing their advert. The adverts are then played to the class for review. • Historic Event News Coverage – Students research a historic event and record a radio news article as if reporting live. They think about what it would have been like to be there, and how it may have been reported to the general public at the time. Students can then write a script for the news article, possibly including interviews with 'key' people involved. • Record A Radio Play – Performing a radio play is easier than putting on a real play as no scenery is needed and students can read from scripts instead of learning lines, but it is also much more interesting than simply reading a play. Students can also consider sound effects and how to create the atmosphere of the play in an 'audio only' environment.

Radio is a versatile medium that can be used in almost all areas of education at all levels and will add a new and dynamic dimension to your school curriculum.

Christopher Somerville (Mr. Bimbamboozle) is North Wales' best loved and most experienced children's entertainer. During term time he runs specialist Punch and Judy and puppet workshops in schools while his children's show combining Magic and Punch & Judy provides a delightful end of term reward day.

Mr. Bimbamboozle Puppet Magic
Drawing on his childhood memories and work as a Punch & Judy man Chris presents a fascinating workshop on the theme of Punch & Judy and the Seaside. The presentation is illustrated with pictures and puppets, and includes a performance of the traditional show. There is an accompanying web presentation which the children can view after the visit to review what they have learned and offers material to download and print. This workshop can be adapted for different age ranges. With his puppetry experience, on television and in the theatre, and his extensive collection of puppets Chris is equipped to devise workshop presentations to compliment a variety of educational topics. He has used Shadow puppets from the Far East in a presentation Dark and Light exploring a world of silhouette and shadow while his puppet collection provided material for A World of Puppets showing different types of puppetry reflecting the cultures where they developed. Chris welcomes teachers’ ideas and requests for particular topics. The various puppet types can be explained and demonstrated to inspire children who have a puppet making project themselves. Chris also collects historical and mechanical toys and presents a workshop to demonstrate these playthings of the past appropriate for Old and New or a technology project. Most of the workshops end with a performance or demonstration and are effective in being both entertaining and educational. As Mr Bimbamboozle Chris entertains children delightfully with a fun-filled mix of Magic and Punch & Judy and his performances are popular for end of term treats and for School Fundays. Chris is also one of the few entertainers who can develop a rapport with the pre-school age range and he has specially designed shows for Nursery presentation. In addition to his work in schools, Chris also runs the famous Harlequin Puppet Theatre in North Wales which specialises in marionettes. Built in 1958 as Britain’s first permanent puppet theatre it shows throughout all school holidays and is available for pre-booked school parties during term time.

“Once again a big thank you for the two days in October. As the young people liked it so much I have been asked to book you again.” Jill Greenall, Mencap, St. Helens “Many thanks - the children had a ball!” Ruth Spencer, Belgrave School PTA, Chester
Circus Skills Workshops are great fun for all and with determination and hard work the skills are achievable by absolutely everyone. Circus skills are also a great form of exercise and develop the physique evenly, unlike some sports which require specialized use of certain muscle groups. They require flexibility, strength, agility and balance, all of which improve with time through repetition. Circus skills also develop concentration, hand-eye co-ordination, motivation and self discipline. Finally, they necessitate the setting of goals, the development of problem solving techniques and team building skills. The personal rewards resulting from each small achievement are immense and become the driving force to the next level, be it alone, with friends or within a class group. Circus Skills can be taught to any age group but for practical purposes workshops are recommended for pupils age 5 and over. Magical Circus is proud that their workshops are accessible to all. They provide individual attention to each participant and take individual needs into consideration when providing them with suitable skills and involving them in the group. They have worked successfully with children and adults with challenging behaviour, a range of physical disabilities and learning difficulties. Previous customers include MENCAP, Downs Syndrome of Wirral, Underley Educational Services and HM Prison Altcourse.

Workshops can be arranged to coincide with a specific part of the curriculum, as an end of term treat, for a special celebration, as part of an Arts Festival, at a Fete or Fair, as a fun introduction to a Training Day or as a Team Building Exercise. JUDO The Olympic Sport of Judo is one of the few sports accessible to almost anyone, including children, and people with disabilities. Because it emphasizes physical and mental development, its influence extends to every area of a person’s life. Physically, Judo improves flexibility, coordination, balance and reflexes. It is a means of self-defence that requires skill rather than just size or strength. Mentally, it promotes concentration, self-confidence and leadership. Because Judo requires a clear and focused mind, it encourages participants to be fully present in the moment. They become more observant and better able to channel their mental and physical energy. With its strict moral and ethical principles, and its humanitarian approach to life, Judo fosters a sense of respect and consideration. Participants are taught to strive for physical, intellectual and moral perfection, so they can not only improve their own life, but also contribute to the greater good. FENCING The Olympic Sport of Fencing is not only an adventurous way to make sure your pupils achieve their five hours of weekly physical activity, the sport also offers an array of benefits to the long-term health of anyone who participates. Fencing provides a perfect form of cardio vascular exercise, as it's a fast-paced activity that gets the heart pumping and oxygen flowing. This leads to benefits including increased stamina, strengthened heart and lungs and increased immune function. It also reduces stress in a safe and enjoyable manner which is excellent during the examination months. With its complex physical manoeuvres, fencing also helps develop muscle strength, reflexes, flexibility, and coordination. The positions and movements in fencing must be precise to be powerful. In order to perfect that precision, the body must 28

School Mural Projects Murals by Design
School Mural Projects was founded by Will Coventry to design, create and coordinate the creation of bespoke celebration murals for schools. School Mural Projects can help to create a unique space that will reflect the ethos of your school. The finished mural may celebrate a school anniversary, an achievement, or could be a simple ‘art wall’ to showcase your pupils' talents. A mural project can take the form of an ‘enterprise day’, where pupils can produce a number of designs. Alternatively; a mural project can engage the whole school by involving all classes in an aspect of the design, as a possible inclusion in their art lessons. Maybe even a design competition. However you decide to proceed with your mural, Will Coventry will personally oversee and produce the final composite mural and he has the experience to deliver a wonderful, unique and lasting work of art for your school to be proud of. The murals can be painted directly onto your chosen wall or they can be painted onto primed boards and erected on a framework in the space provided. A mural is an innovative and rewarding way to involve your pupils in creating their own personal environment and helps to engender a genuine sense of attachment, ownership and pride in their school. Will Coventry is a commercial artist, graphic designer and a qualified teacher.

Filbert Great Artists in School Picasso, Dali, Warhol, Monet, Van Gogh and other artists will start a visit to your school by recreating their lives in front of an audience as big as a school or small as a class. There are many parts for the children to play in these interactive events which give children a real insight into the motivations and work of these great artists. “You put so much energy into every session and the lovely thing about that is watching our children, each one of them putting energy and effort into their work combined with excitement and great enthusiasm. All in all we all had a wonderful day and look forward to your next visit next term.” Sally McCamley, Headteacher, Stoke Prior Primary
These unique and inspiring events are followed by drawing and painting workshops which show children how to draw anything from a tree to a horse by using simple shapes, light, shade and texture; how to use a brush to create different marks and how to mix colour. For older children, such elements as; how to plan a painting using preliminary sketches, perspective and many other issues connected with painting and drawing are explained with practical demonstrations, delivered in a humorous and supportive manner, so even reluctant artists can achieve excellent results. Filbert, who arrives in costume and character, interacts superbly with children of all ages and interactive events and workshops are age appropriate, educational and great fun. He uses the latest digital projection equipment and ancillaries, guaranteeing a quality experience. Interactive events last from ½ hour to 1 hour depending on the age group and are followed by practical workshops. Alternatively Filbert can deliver a Painting Day to give pupils insights into how artists and movements created and developed their work. This can begin with an interactive event which demonstrates techniques and creates the atmosphere surrounding artists and gives pointers to their motives and character. Children usually practice and experiment with the techniques before creating their own masterpieces. Topics can include Impressionism, Expressionism, Abstract art, Futurism, and many others Supply Filbert with your examination questions, ideas, theme or project and he will put together a fantastic motivational half/full day for your GCSE or A Level Art and Design students. An interactive session where ideas are developed, discussed and thrown around, followed by short practical sessions where designs and ideas can be developed provide a great antidote to the phrase, 'I don't know what to do.'

Staff training days are also available and present an opportunity for teachers, particularly in primary schools, to learn drawing and painting techniques, methods and ideas which they can use in the class room. Techniques are broken down into simple sections, so that even teachers with little artistic ability can use and demonstrate them to a class.

SciTech combines Science, Technology & Children to create fun & enthusiasm. Children love to learn and are extremely receptive to receiving new information. SciTech provide a range of immersive lectures and workshops designed to provide children with a profound learning experience that will lead to an abiding love and hunger for learning and for science and technology. The States of Matter Lecture - Perhaps because of its spectacular and interactive nature, that makes this our most popular lecture here and throughout mainland Europe. This breathtaking experience sees liquid nitrogen and dry ice being used to bring about a thorough understanding of the three states of matter and the changes of state as well as a fantastic demonstration of evaporation, condensation, rain fog and snow as part of the water cycle. Children will be actively involved in a range of experiments during which they will become atoms & molecules and even temperatures on a living thermometer! Besides witnessing the fascinating phenomena the various experiments demonstrate, the children are invited to participate in many other activities and even get to witness a pressure explosion (in a plastic pop bottle) in the playground! When we revisit schools, children who participated in a lecture several years before, will demonstrate the amazing amount of knowledge they have retained from the experience.
All the SciTech lectures meet many of the curricular goals for Science and Technology as well of others, especially English. They encourage participation and fun. There is, also, a range of class based workshops that can be given independently or as an extension to a lecture. In these workshops children could make ice cream with liquid nitrogen; bubbles out of chocolate; great 2D and 3D illusions and more. In-Service Training work is available on any of the areas offered as lectures to explore ways in which the lecture can be built upon in class.

SciTech Science-based activities
Forces - This lecture is one of the most popular in the SciTech programme because it is the perfect example of SciTech’s philosophy of kinaesthetic learning - demonstration through audience participation in a BIG and physical way. Children witness a giant lever that allows one child to lift six others; One child rides ‘The Trolley of Doom!’ to demonstrate what happens when a force is applied to an object, ropes and pulleys can be used to pull a 4 x 4 car and to involve pupils in a giant 'Tug-ofWar' to demonstrate how simple machines amplify force. The Amazing Machine is in fact, a lecture on the human body that engages children through participation to help them appreciate how the experiences of their own body relate to the functions of Respiration, Digestion, the Senses, Memory, Illusion, and Muscles Bones & Movement. This is an exciting session where children get to join in feeling a giant pulse, help an apple through a giant intestine and go on a journey through the circulatory system. F1 - The lecture explains how forces, friction, aerodynamics and teamwork are all needed for success in F1 racing. The activities include experiments and demonstrations on Forces and Aerodynamics. This exciting programme was developed with McLaren and Brawn-Mercedes who have made available a variety of components such as wings and wheels etc, for the children to explore. The lecture contains a stunning technological exercise to demonstrate how effective the children can be as part of a team. Using a ‘Formula 1’ style Go Kart, this involves 21+ children forming a pit crew to change the wheels and includes everything from simulated refuelling, jacks, power wrenches, replacing the front wing and of course, the lollipop! It is a wonderful experience for the children, but an equally wonderful experience for teachers to witness transition from 21+ demanding individuals into a single team!

Llangollen Wharf Horse drawn canal boat trips Llangollen Wharf is one of the major attractions in the North Wales market town of Llangollen. From the Wharf you can embark on either a horse drawn boat trip along the feeder for the main canal, or a motorised aqueduct cruise which will take your party across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Built by Thomas Telford between 1795 and 1805 the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the country’s biggest navigable aqueduct towering a massive 126ft above the River Dee, supported on 18 stone piers and listed as a world heritage site. Both trips take in the magical sights and sounds of the beautiful Llangollen Canal and are suitable for all Keystages supporting National Curriculum subjects including history, geography, science, business studies - tourism and leisure. Visitors have enjoyed trips from the Wharf for 100 years and the experience is like stepping back in time. There are three different boats trips available from the Wharf: 45 minute Horse Drawn Boat Trip - leaves the Wharf westwards for 1 mile before the horse changes ends and brings the boat back. This length of canal is not used by motor boats so the water is crystal clear and there are often fish to be seen. The boat passes the Royal International Pavilion and under 2 bridges before running alongside the steam railway. This trip is suitable for all ages and can run any time between 10.00am and 3.00pm by arrangement. 2 hour Horse Drawn Boat Trip - goes in the same direction but continues along the Dee valley passing under 2 more bridges and crossing a small aqueduct before arriving at the Chain Bridge Hotel. A scheduled stop here allows you to admire the chain bridge across the River Dee, and marvel at the man-made Horseshoe Falls, created by Thomas Telford. This is the most beautiful stretch of canal and the horse drawn trip is the perfect way to see it. This trip can run at any time between 10.00am and 2.00pm by arrangement but is not suitable for very young children. 2 hour Aqueduct Trip - is a motor boat cruise on the "Thomas Telford" and goes in the opposite direction to the Horse Drawn Boat Trips. A live commentary from your skipper gives you the history, local knowledge and up to date gossip along the way. The journey finishes over the famous and thrilling Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built by Telford in 1805 and unsurpassed in its simplicity and engineering achievement. The trip is one way so your transport will drop you off at one end and pick you up at the other. The boats are All Weather and the Horse Boats are wheelchair friendly. In addition to providing entertainment, their education pieces also have relevance to the curriculum and enhance the work done in the classroom. “Carl and Jules stayed in character from the first moment to the last - allowing the pupils to ask authentic questions and receive authentic answers. The period props and costumes that they wore really added to the experience, and the highlight for all of the pupils was the simulated air raid! Watching 80odd Year 6 pupils running for cover, and then joining in with 'Run Rabbit' to keeps their spirits up was fantastic! The children can't wait to invite Carl and Jules back in later in the year, to bring other areas of history to life! Thank you both very much and we hope to see you very soon!” Dave Peterson, Head of Year 5/6, Ludlow Junior School

Kiddy Cook Healthy cooking classes Kiddy Cook’s Food In Schools Project is a hands-on unit of study that uses the theme of healthy eating to enrich the curriculum and develop thinking in a range of subjects. They run cookery workshops for children aged 2 – 11 years to encourage them to learn about ‘good’ food and to explore new flavours in an educational and fun way.
“The experience provided by Kiddy Cook was rich and stimulating and the Reception children were captivated by both the experiments and the cooking. The tasks themselves were straightforward, yet exciting. Overall it was a wonderful afternoon, well planned, well carried out and generally great fun! The children can’t wait for you to come back!” Helen Chappell, Reception Teacher, Bowdon CE Primary School
and make a ‘local’ recipe. Healthy Lunchbox – focus on healthy eating and making healthy choices. We show the children how to make a delicious and nutritious snack and introduce them to the importance of having 5 fruit and vegetable portions a day. Nurseries Our nursery sessions are a way for children to experience fresh local produce, tasty and healthy snacks, and cooking in the classroom! Cookie Tots class leaders bring exciting, practical & interactive lessons about healthy eating through storytelling, songs, games & activities all based around food and cooking. These great classes promote healthy eating and food awareness whilst building confidence and encouraging independence. Different recipes give the children a chance to explore their senses and express their creativity and they get to take home what they’ve made. Kiddy Cook hopes that at the end of these sessions, students will have developed the skills to make healthier food choices, a taste for new and diverse whole foods and a willingness to – and enthusiasm for – trying new foods. Cooking is an excellent way for children to build confidence whilst providing them with skills they can use again and again. It gives them an opportunity to be creative and to learn about ‘good’ food whilst having FUN in a safe and stimulating environment.
Each workshop encourages the students to discover the excitement that food can bring whilst relating it to its environmental impact, fair trade and more complex issues related to the global economy. Children are encouraged to taste during the cooking process so they can see for themselves how textures and flavours change once cooked. They get to conduct a ‘volcano’ experiment to learn how carbon dioxide works to make their cakes and biscuits rise. They learn the difference between taste and flavour and think about the effect sound has on their ability to eat! Schools A typical school day will consist of Kiddy Cook running 4 workshops for approximately 15 children. We’ll arrive at your school and supply all of the ingredients, aprons and utensils (excluding an oven). Most lessons last for 60 minutes and include a presentation, whole class and individual activities, and a show & taste component.

Our sessions are many and varied and include Juicy Lucy – peel, chop and slice as we introduce you to some of the fruit and vegetables that can be juiced and then create your own 5-aday drink. Humour and laughter play an important role in the learning process and Laughology offer a range of unique services to schools and other educational establishments, using laughter and humour techniques to enhance learning and teaching skills.
“Humour helps to connect left-brain activities with the right-brain creative side. This connection allows learners to experience a refreshing pause and better absorb the information being presented. Humour results in better information recall and an increase in long term retention”. Todd T Holm PhD ‘Humour and Learning’, December 29, 2004

Laughology Enhancing learning
Appropriate humour in a learning environment fosters mutual respect, provides commonalities and connections between tutors and learners and can also increase class attendance. Tutors who use strategies that promote the connection between humour and learning provide learners with the most memorable learning experiences. Humour affects learning outcomes, particularly in ‘difficult subjects’. Humour can reduce anxiety and aid self confidence which improves student receptiveness and ultimately has a positive affect on test performance. The area of the brain used for flexible thinking and problem solving is the same area of the brain we use for processing humour and for ‘getting the joke’. By using humour in learning we are accessing and exercising our flexible thinking which encourages development of key learning and thinking skills such as creativity and problem solving. Employers are also looking for more than just technical skills and knowledge of degree discipline. They particularly “value skills such as communication, team working and problem solving. Young people who can demonstrate these skills have a real advantage’. Digby Jones – Director General CBI Humour is a thinking skill. Laughology encourages the qualities and skills needed for success in learning and life and increases awareness of mental and physical health by introducing techniques for positive interaction. Laughology encourages an approach to learning that is safe, fun and engaging. They work with you, so that the events are designed around the needs of your school, but also tailored to the needs and aspirations of each child. Every Child Matters and every child can laugh! Issues and experiences are explored in a fun and creative way which encourages: • Motivation, learning and retention. • Participation and teamwork • Emotional intelligence and resilience • Creativity and imagination for learning • Self esteem and confidence building Their programmes are equally well received by both learners

Small Steps to Success Motivational workshops Small Steps to Success believes that children can aspire to be anything they want to be in life with hard work, determination and above all true belief in their abilities. They provide quality workshops for children that will inspire and motivate them to develop a more positive attitude to life and learning, in a bid to make their lives and futures better. Katie Small set up Small Steps to Success to provide children with the inspiration, motivation and encouragement to achieve success in their lives. Research has shown that motivating children at an early age is the best way of having a long lasting effect on the rest of their lives. Schools are the best place to reach all children and help them to make their lives better and to take responsibility for their futures. Katie began her teaching career in a deprived area of Liverpool where she recognised the talent and potential many children have, regardless of their backgrounds. Her passion for positive thinking and teaching has been life long and she has studied the topic for many years. She couldn’t understand why motivational speaking only existed for adults and believed that it could also benefit children and that having more positive children in the world will have positive results for schools, teachers, parents and society.
• Motivating children to believe in themselves and their abilities. • Raise children's aspirations, hopes and dreams so they aim for more out of life. • Teaching children how the power of positive thinking can encourage success. • Building children's confidence and self-esteem. • Encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own lives.
Many children live in negative environments which are detrimental to their personal development. Negativity breeds negativity but the same works in reverse in that positivity breeds positivity so Small Steps works to make children more positive and to help them believe in a bright, happy and successful future for themselves. Small Steps works in conjunction with a number of Government Initiatives that seek to provide young people with a sense of purpose, personal resilience and emotional stability. They deliver six age specific workshops which are designed for schools but can also be delivered to any youth group or organisation. Year 6 Workshop (Primary) - Small Step, Giant Leap Helping children cope with the transition process, and working specifically to improve self esteem and confidence. Year 7 Workshop - First Class Helping children cope with their 1st year at high school, and working specifically to improve self esteem and confidence. Year 9 Workshop - Your Life, Your Choice, Your Future Choosing options, helping children make the right decisions. Year 11 Workshop - Recipe for Success Helping children prepare for their exams and to motivate them to achieve more than they thought possible. Year 12/13 Workshops - The World Is Your Oyster Encouraging young adults to see what the world has to offer them and to seize their opportunities.

The Junior Chefs Academy has been helping schools to achieve healthy eating status across the North West. Their childrens cookery workshops promote a healthy attitude to learning about and having fun with food. Sessions are vibrant and educational and all pupils take home their own masterpiece; personalised chef’s hat; apron and recipe pack at the end of the day.
“From a head teacher’s perspective, it is a cost effective form of outsourcing. Junior Chefs meets every objective of ECM and also covers many elements across the curriculum, including science, art and drama. Most importantly, it’s great fun for the kids and messages are communicated brilliantly. Across all of our year groups the children have loved it.” Moira Williams, Head teacher, William Stockton Primary School

Junior Chefs Academy Hands-on cookery workshops
A typical school day will consist of Junior Chefs running four workshops for approximately thirty children. Classes are delivered by a fully qualified chef/lecturer who will arive at your school, and supply all the food and equipment needed for the day, along with an abundance of enthusiasm and expertise. They can cater for all year groups and will organise the day from start to finish, and like true professionals, leave the designated work area spotless upon completion. Their healthy eating classes include a fully hands on cooking experience coupled with interactive games and activities to engage and inspire your pupils’ interest and imagination. Sessions link in with the National Curriculum including the art of; the science of; and even a multicultural look at the process of cooking and food but most importantly they stimulate children’s interest in the health and nutrition aspects of food. Junior Chef’s Academy worked with 22,500 children last year and are hoping to double that number this year, involving over 250 schools across the North West. The reports from primary schools have been glowing and their success figures are testament to the appeal of their product. The levels of repeat business have been absolutely fantastic and they are building strong relationships with many schools. If the success of a Junior Chefs’ session lies in its all singing, all dancing approach, it is perhaps apt that a Michelin starred celebrity chef with his own brand of fancy footwork, Gary Rhodes, has been quick to champion the cause and says. “It’s vitally important that we educate children about the benefits of a healthy, balanced diet and give them the practical skills to achieve it. Through the Junior Chefs Academy these skills can be achieved while having good fun. I have been delighted with the work done by Junior Chefs Academy. They are helping kids to become educated about nutrition, whilst also having lots of fun.”

The Power of Storytelling as a Teaching Tool is a suite of resources created by Rona Barbour designed and developed specifically for practitioners in education to introduce storytelling into sessions to influence learners and improve their creativity and imagination. It is an established fact that fewer young people read these days. The storytelling course delivers a teaching resource which gives teachers an ideal opportunity to introduce learners to a range of reading experiences. The wide variety of material made available in this course means that something appropriate and engaging can be found for all learners, opening up to them the opportunity to read for pleasure which in turn, increases their learning potential.
68
The storytelling courses have been validated as a CPD unit and have been especially tailored to help engage with the storytelling resources in a stimulating and interactive environment. The workshop will provide a series of activities drawing attention to the importance of storytelling as a teaching method and ways in which storytelling can be used to engage the pupils,

“Can't do Maths” remains a familiar cry from many individuals, despite a series of Government initiatives to address the issue. The University of Liverpool Maths Outreach team have a variety of workshops, suitable for age groups from Year 1 upwards, including the Liverpool Mathematical Society’s popular FunMaths Roadshow, which aims to show pupils that Maths can be fun.
“Our year 7 students loved the Roadshow. They want to know when you are coming again!” Teacher, St. Joseph’s College “Years 1 to 6 found the session very enjoyable, achievable and challenging in parts.” Primary Teacher
The Maths Outreach team organise and deliver visits to primary and secondary schools, and also FE colleges, both in the North West and throughout mainland UK. We can work with pupils from many different backgrounds, including looked-after children, Aimhigher cohorts, and Gifted and Talented. A typical day consists of four sessions, usually about an hour each in length, but tailored to fit in with the school’s timetable constraints.

Maths Outreach Mathematical activities
The FunMaths Roadshow is a pupil-centred resource which can be set up in a school hall on tables that pupils can walk between and each activity has an A3 baseboard and pieces to manipulate. Pupils work in pairs or threes so they can discuss their work and self-select any of the activities, in any order. The activities are grouped in Boxes of 25, of which two Boxes are used per session, and each Box covers a range of mathematical topics. There is a wide spread of difficulty within each Box, making the Roadshow suitable for all abilities. 60 – 80 pupils would normally be involved per session. The Roadshow provides opportunities to strengthen links between schools and the community, with older pupils brought in as additional staff and parents and governors encouraged to come in to have a go at the activities alongside pupils. The Roadshow also provides an opportunity for gifted and talented KS2 pupils to attend secondary schools to work alongside KS3 pupils. Another popular workshop is the Dragon Quiz, which is a teambased relay for up to 60 pupils per session, with the aim of completing as many questions as possible in the time allowed. The Dragon Quiz is ideal for revision purposes, but can also be completed just for fun. There is a role for older pupils or staff to act as the ‘Dragon Masters’, marking participants’ answers. For groups of 30 - 40 pupils, we have workshops available for most ages and abilities, from ‘Maths in Art’ to ‘Pythagoras’, and from ‘Code Breaking’ to ‘Mechanics’. Workshops can also be designed to cover a requested topic.

Gene Journey Supporting biology and ethics Illumination Educational Software has developed a regularly updated online resource on genetics called Gene Journey. The site includes an extensive video library which provides a rich resource to stimulate debate on issues which will affect all our lives. On offer is a range of workshops which use Gene Journey and innovative software they have designed specifically for debates.
“I enjoyed using the Virtual Lab in class; it was fun being told what to do by my friends if I got stuck. I would also like to use it at home where I can work at my own pace.” GCSE Biology Student at Wirral County Grammar School for Boys “We think it is brilliant...It is the best resource we have seen for the teaching of these topics.” Marlene Griffin, Head of Biology, Hitchin High School
Gene Journey includes video, animation and a variety of interactive tasks. It is being used by a wide range of students studying genetics at school, college and university – from GCSE and A-level biology students to nursing and biological science undergraduates. Gene Journey can be used in class as a group activity or students can work at their own pace either in a computer suite or from home. Many of the tasks work extremely well with an interactive whiteboard. The aim of ‘Chromosome Challenge’ is to identify all the human chromosomes. Oliver, a GSCE Biology Student, from St Anselm’s Catholic College comments: “Really interesting, a great way to learn and much better than the way we did it in class when we had to cut out the chromosomes and stick them in a book”. The site also includes an innovative virtual cytogenetics lab allowing students to carry out a series of interactive tasks, based on how samples of amniotic fluid are analysed in a real laboratory. Tasks include tissue culture and analysing a PCR sample; the experience provides a genuine feel for what it is like to work in a lab. Gene Journey includes video clips of people whose work involves genetics, as well as people affected by genetic conditions. For example, Nobel Prize winner, John Sulston, who played a leading role in the Human Genome Project, discusses the ethics of patenting genes. As well as providing an invaluable interactive educational resource, the site aims to empower young people to play an active part in the debate on how genetics should impact on all our lives now and in the future.

Learning opportunities down on the farm Farms are as varied as the food we eat and provide opportunities for learning both in a formal context and by enhancing the social and emotional aspects of development. They may focus on livestock or arable production, or a combination, and be self-contained units or part of huge estates. There are a number that have developed as community and city farms which may be working farms, or smaller organisations that form a part of a community which can be visited by schools. Every aspect of a farm visit gives opportunities for direct and indirect learning, by experiencing the unique sights, sounds and smells. A farm visit gives young people the opportunity to understand where the food we eat comes from, and an understanding of how food production affects the countryside. Farms offer many unique learning opportunities, from the power of simple first-hand experiences, such as witnessing the birth of a lamb in spring or walking through a field of wheat which stretches to the horizon, to getting to grips with microbes in action in a dairy as milk turns into cheese or getting a glimpse into the many varied careers involved in keeping the countryside flourishing. A farm visit might focus on: l ‘from field to plate’ — the journey made in the production of one food item such as milk, wheat or potatoes l the impact on the landscape of farming operations l the people and the diversity of farming careers — l farm technology l farming methods, perhaps comparing organic with conventional farming l the natural environment l geography and map work
Learning support Many farms provide learning materials they have produced to support your visit wether in the form of worksheets or activities to be carried out during the visit or on return to the classroom. Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) offers access to resources through its website and its network of regional education coordinators. It also provides signposts to many different organisations who offer support both in terms of resources to support your visit and other possible visits by people to the school or setting. FACE aim to educate children and young people about food and farming in a sustainable countryside. There is widespread concern about the way children, young people, and their families, have become disassociated from where their food comes from and don’t know what is required for a healthy diet and lifestyle. They are also unaware of the many opportunities in the countryside for leisure and social activities, and for employment. FACE aims to meet these educational needs by working with their members and partners to promote visits to farms, and to provide easy access to a wide range of high-quality educational resources and activities to complement both schoolbased studies and outdoor visits. 74
Their work with schools and young people is highly successful because of the immediate and widespread benefits of visits to the
outdoors, and of using food, farming and the countryside to support many aspects of the curriculum and by doing so they aim to:• stimulate interest and excitement;• link to all aspects and stages of the school curriculum;• allow pupils to see rural activities such as food production first-hand;• introduce pupils to a host of leisure activities in the countryside;• introduce pupils to rural career opportunities and the world of work. FACE works with pupils and teachers and provides a one-stop enquiry service, curriculum resources, Regional Education Coordinators, links with farmers and the rural industries and training for teachers. They also provide workshops for farmers and seminars, support and advice, alongside an accreditation system for countryside visits while also forging links between schools and farms. For more details of how your school can maximise the learning potential of the countryside or how FACE can assist with your school’s farm visits see the website www.face-online.org.uk.
At its simplest, Learning Outside the Classroom involves young people moving outside their immediate and accustomed environment to learn from first-hand experiences. Wherever young people learn, from the ages of 0 to 19, learning outside the classroom has a part to play as an integral element in that learning.
Photograph courtesy of Martin Mere Wetland Centre
All young people should experience learning outside the classroom and its benefits as a central aspect of the learning experience, the curriculum and the courses they are engaged with. By stepping outside the classroom the opportunity exists to transform learning and raise achievement. Learning Outside the Classroom allows participants to learn in context, to learn by practical engagement, and to learn by personal discovery. Students can master new skills, work collaboratively with others and develop a better sense of themselves and their potential. There really is no limit to where Learning Outside the Classroom can take place. Give it a try!
In school grounds Habitats (e.g. a school playing field, hedge, meadow or pond), school garden or growing area, outdoor classroom, storytelling area, adventure play equipment and climbing/traversing walls, woodland.
Outside school Park or woodland, high street, city farm, community garden or allotment, garden centre, library, historic and contemporary buildings, arts venues. Botanic parks and gardens, country parks, places of worship, museums and heritage sites, theatre, adventure activity centres, nature reserves, science and discovery centres, zoos and aquaria. The aim is not only to make clear that learning outside the classroom has significant learning benefits for participants but also to explore how it can be successfully delivered so that more young people develop their knowledge, understanding and skills beyond the classroom walls.

The Forest Education Initiative Forest Schools originated in Europe in the early 20th century as a way of teaching about the natural world. By the 1980s it became part of the Danish early years programme. In 1993 a group of childcare students visiting Denmark witnessed the benefits of Forest School for themselves and brought the idea back to Bridgwater College. Here, lecturers that accompanied the students considered how they could apply what they had seen to the childcare provision in their own Early Years Excellence Centre. Since then the idea has grown and Forest Schools are spreading throughout Britain. Forest Education Initiative (FEI) aims to increase the understanding and appreciation, particularly among young people, of the environmental, social, and economic potential of trees, woodlands and forests and of the link between the tree and everyday wood products. Woodlands provide environmentally sustainable building materials and many other products essential to daily life. Wood products require less energy to manufacture and maintain than other non-renewable materials and they can be easily recycled. Woodlands benefit our environment and provide a great setting for education and recreation, as well as muchneeded jobs in the rural economy. The real work of FEI is achieved by local groups, known as 'cluster groups'. FEI encourages and supports the formation of voluntary cluster groups at local and regional levels.
Photographs courtesy of www.foresteducation.org
FEI cluster groups informally bring together individuals and organisations who want to educate others about trees and wood, and those directly involved with woodland ownership and management and related timber industries. Involvement is open to all those who wish to further the aims and objectives of FEI. Each FEI cluster group is unique, locally managed, independent and focused on their local needs. Clusters aim to offer teachers and leaders, facilities for developing activity-based programmes based on trees, forests and wood products in their locality.
Voluntary Ofsted Registration A voluntary side now exists to the Ofsted Childcare Register which allows non statutory, self registration for participating organisations. Voluntary registration means parents will know that an organisation has met basic standards designed to safeguard children. It also means eligible parents will be able to get help with the costs of their childcare through Working Tax Credit and employer-supported childcare schemes. Local authorities offer support and training to registered providers and pass on their details to parents who are looking for childcare and schools using external organisations to provide an extended service are encouraged to work with registered providers.
76
In order to register, the care must be provided for at least two hours a day or joined up to the beginning or end of the school day; or be part of an arrangement whereby care is provided for a continuous period of at least two hours (e.g. part of
extended schools activities or childcare). All staff with unsupervised access to children must undergo a check with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). Staff, premises, equipment and care provision must be safe and suitable. At least one staff member who is caring for children must have an appropriate first aid certificate, and one member of staff must have had appropriate training covering the common core skills. The registered provider must also have public liability insurance. Ofsted will select a proportion of providers for inspection at random, and there will always be an inspection following a complaint. After inspection, Ofsted will write to childcare providers to tell them if they have met the requirements for registration. To make an application, or for more information, contact Ofsted on 08456 404040 or visit www.ofsted.gov.uk.

Schools have used BBC Radio education resources for many years. BBC School Radio provides programmes to support teaching across a wide range of primary curriculum areas. The programmes offer a flexible, convenient resource with learning outcomes which carefully target curriculum objectives. They offer complete, interactive, ready-to-use sessions intended to inspire and motivate pupils. Most BBC School Radio programmes are supported by online Teacher's Notes which are free and simple to download and will include l details of songs, poems, music and other material used within the programmes l guidance on how programmes link to the curriculum l lesson plans and other suggestions for integrating the programmes into your classroom work l a comprehensive range of follow-up activities to support work in a variety of curriculum areas. School Radio programmes are available for schools in the UK to order on pre-recorded CDs. Each series offers a complete term's worth of material, available before the beginning of each term to enable lesson planning. Programmes are also available on demand via internet for 7 days after broadcast or they can be recorded during transmission. In addition to broadcast radio resources many schools are benefitting from setting up their own in school radio stations. Companies are springing up who can facilitate the creation of a radio station in school. This involves a consultation and installation
of equipment, industry standard software, training and support packages which will allow pupils to operate their own in school radio, create and broadcast content. The applications for radio in school are extensive and cover many curriculum subjects. It allows teachers to be creative during their lesson plans to fully utilise this powerful tool. Equally, it is a powerful tool with a uniquely engaging presence that adds a new dimension to learning, inspires participation and gets pupils enthused about learning. Covers curriculum areas l ICT Applications of Literacy Framework: communication, language and listening. l Every Child Matters/Community links. l Collaborative and autonomous learning. l Up-to-date VLE podcast/radio-feed creation. l Transition agenda. l Citizenship, PSE, Learning for Life and Work. l Enterprise in Education. l Public speaking skills and pupil confidence. Another option is subscription to an online radio resource where schools can create an online account and use a virtual studio to create, record and store content which can be broadcast as a blog and accessed by anyone with a computer, in school or from home. With so much professional help and advice available, and with a variety of cost effective alternatives on the market it has never been easier for schools to get involved with school radio and add this powerful resource to the curriculum.

The Government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched their Sustainable Schools Framework in 2006 when the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP set out challenging long-term aspirations for schools to mainstream learning about sustainable development issues and sustainable practices into everyday school life. Eco-Schools is an international award programme guiding schools on their sustainable journey and providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. It is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In addition to EcoSchools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests. There are 46 countries around the world running the Eco-Schools programme which links more than 40,000 schools around the world. It is now easy for Eco-Schools across the world to get in touch and explore ways of working together on environmental issues. Visit www.eco-schools.net where you will find instructions on how to register your school and carry out a search. After finding an EcoSchool that matches your criteria, you can then contact the ‘match’ school by post, telephone or email! Joining the Eco-Schools programme is free and it makes tackling sustainable issues manageable and easy for all schools, whether they are children’s centres, nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools or schools with special status. Once registered, schools follow a simple seven-step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity. Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to achieve them. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success.
78
Schools work towards gaining one of three awards – Bronze, Silver or the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. Bronze and Silver are both self accredited through the website and Green Flag is externally assessed by ENCAMS.
The Eco-Schools Programme is focused around nine key environmental topics: l Water Learning how to conserve and reduce consumption l Biodiversity School grounds provide an ideal opportunity to introduce children to the natural environment and to biodiversity in a practical way l Energy All Eco-Schools must carry out an energy audit as part of their Environmental Review and set targets for reducing energy use through their Action Plan l Global Perspectives Eco-Schools offers schools ways of obtaining global perspective with a school link or an international project on environmental issues l Healthy Living Schools are key to promoting the health and well-being of young people and the wider community through l Litter Many Eco-Schools choose to tackle litter as one of their first priorities following their Environmental Review l School Grounds should be developed to satisfy educational and recreational requirements l Transport Developing sustainable transport methods to reduce fuel consumption, pollution and car use. This includes cycling, rail, bus or walking l Waste Developing policies to reduce, re use and recycle materials
However, by adopting the flexible framework of Eco-Schools and following its seven-step process, your school will also be addressing the following national initiatives: l Sustainable Schools Strategy The Sustainable Schools Strategy highlights eight key doorways or areas where schools can become more sustainable. l Healthy Schools promotes the health and well-being of pupils and staff through a well planned, taught curriculum in a physical and emotional environment that promotes learning and healthy lifestyle choices. l International School Award support Eco-Schools linking with schools overseas as part of their Global Gateway and International Schools Award. l ASDAN Awards The first nationally recognised qualification in sustainability for students in secondary schools. l Every Child Matters to ensure every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, has the support they need to be healthy; stay safe; enjoy and achieve; make a positive contribution; and achieve economic well-being. l Learning Outside The Classroom Often it is outside the classroom that children have their most memorable learning experiences.
Woodheys Primary School Practical energy saving Woodheys Primary School in Sale, Cheshire has an excellent programme of practical energy saving across the school and is proud to have achieved the Eco School green flag status. Working closely with expert organisations such as WWF it has created a high-quality curriculum for its pupils which has been widely praised and replicated. An energy audit in 1999 prompted energy efficiency actions which reduced gas consumption by 30% and a solar PV array was installed on the school roof in 2005 with an electronic display that allows pupils to easily monitor its electricity generation. Other measures include 'Eco Monitors' to encourage good energy saving and a Travel Plan encouraging cycling and walking to school. The school places strong emphasis on carrying behavioural change through to the pupils' homes and local community. In 2007 Woodheys Primary were the national winners of the Ashden Awards presented at the Royal Geographic in London to Headteacher Mrs Laura Daniels by Al Gore, on behalf of the Woodheys Community. The ÂŁ15,000 prize money has provided the means for Woodheys to spread the word on sustainability nationally and internationally through their website and exciting science projects with their pupils
North West Sustainable Schools The National Framework for Sustainable Schools was created as a means to engage and assist all schools in addressing the issues of sustainable development and to encourage education for sustainable development (ESD) to be embedded in schools. The framework is made up of 8 Doorways: l l l l l l l
Food and drink Traffic and travel Energy and water Buildings and grounds Local well-being Waste and sustainable procurement Inclusion and participation
These can be summarised as 'Care for self, care for others and care for the environment' and has three cross-cutting themes, Campus, Community and Curriculum. This encourages schools to engage leadership, teaching and non teaching staff, young people and the local community in the agenda. North West Sustainable Schools DCSF released funds to the regions in 2007 to raise awareness of Sustainable Schools: the north west chose to create a full time post to promote the agenda with schools and Local Authorities (LAs), to create networks in the sub-regions to share good practice, run training around each doorway with those able to effect change, and to support LA engagement. There has been training for school management including bursars, a governors' conference working in partnership with NWCOGs and work has been undertaken with networks such as extended schools, the Diocese, and other relevant networks.

Eco-Schools, Healthy Schools and International School Awards are just some of the environmental award schemes on offer to schools. Sometimes it can be a little confusing as to how they all fit together, and the challenge is for schools to integrate the programmes on offer in a way which underpins the school ethos or climate for learning. There is no right or wrong way to do this as it will depend upon the school’s individual circumstances and the interests and passions of the school leadership, staff, parents and of course pupils.
Our main objectives have been to connect with and try to support existing ESD networks across the region and, where there were none, to develop them, and to ensure that existing networks working with schools are aware of the agenda. Activities North West Sustainable Schools brought together environmental education officers and ESD practitioners from across the ten Greater Manchester LAs to collaborate and run a Sustainable Schools conference. This event brought schools together from across the sub-region to learn from each other and share their best practice. It has also initiated a Greater Manchester network of expertise. 2009-2011 In 2009, objectives have slightly shifted with more emphasis on engaging LAs in a wider process. Embedding the National Framework for Sustainable Schools is an excellent means for LAs to address a multitude of agendas: not only does it focus on environmental sustainability, but it creates tangible links for the Children and Young People directorates. Furthermore, it helps build stronger and safer communities, has inclusion, health and well-being as core drivers, is proven to aid school attendance and levels of achievement, and has huge potential to drive forward CO2 savings. Added to this LAs are discovering that schools emit between 50-60% of the carbon for which they are responsible and, with schools being a part of the Carbon Reduction Commitment, it is imperative that schools become communities of good practice around energy use and energy efficiency. Consequently, North West Sustainable Schools is encouraging LAs to baseline and work with this agenda in an internal, cross-directorate manner to ensure that LA services not only understand the issues but can help schools deliver the agenda with greater ease.

Growing Schools – learning in the living environment Growing Schools aims to give all children the opportunity to connect with the living environment, whether it is an inner city window box or a vast country estate, a school veg plot or a natural woodland. Interacting with living plants and animals provides a very rich, hands-on earning experience in which both formal and informal education can flourish. The Growing Schools programme supports the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, and shares its conviction that every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstance. Within these broad boundaries Growing Schools focuses particularly on three areas that are accessible to all, at some level, as a context for learning. They are: l Food and farming, including the managed countryside l Gardens, gardening and green spaces l Wildlife and the natural environment Growing Schools also meshes very well with the Sustainable Schools agenda. It provides a practical approach to its core theme of care – for oneself, for each other and for the environment – and is particularly relevant to the food & drink gateway.
History of Growing Schools
80
Growing Schools was launched in 2001 in the wake of a foot and mouth crisis. This had raised concerns about the increasing divide between urban and rural life, the lack of knowledge about food and farming in the population at large, and a disconnection between young people and the wider environment. The National Curriculum required teaching young people about food, sustainable development, agriculture, environmental issues and the science of plants and animals. The advent of Citizenship within the curriculum added an important dimension, particularly its focus on rights, responsibilities and participating in the local community.
Learning that took place beyond the classroom walls was seen as a particularly effective way to enhance young people’s understanding of the wider issues, while delivering curriculum goals. However, many schools were uncertain about the benefits and practicalities of learning outside the classroom, so the Growing Schools programme initially focussed on identifying and overcoming barriers to outdoor learning. Partners were recruited and five flagship projects set up to develop appropriate resources including teacher training (CFE), teaching materials for early years (LTL), using field study centres to learn about growing and farming (NAFSO), using farms and gardens for learning (FCFCG) and encouraging farm visits (NAPAEO, now Landex). The programme was given a major publicity boost through the Growing Schools Garden created at the Hampton Court Show in 2002, and associated resources in the form of a Teachers’ Pack and a Growing Schools calendar. In 2005, linking with the popular film Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit spread the word further through the Great Vegetable Challenge – a competition to design a school garden – with its own wall planner and teachers’ pack. ‘Get Your Hands Dirty’, an indestructible folder that teachers can fill with their own selection of downloadable resources on farming and gardening was published in 2007, and has proved immensely popular. In July of the same year a second Growing Schools Garden triumphed at the Hampton Court Show, winning Best in Show. It has been recreated as a resource for school groups and teacher training at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and has its own website (www.thegrowingschoolsgarden.org.uk) for those unable to visit in person. Growing Schools is run as a partnership, funded by the DCSF, managed on a day-to-day basis by FACE, and supported by a Development and Delivery Group, representing partner organisations. It communicates through its website, www.growingschools.org.uk launched in 2007, a twice-termly enewsletter and an annual conference.
