Drum Planet Interactive African drumming Drum Planet have a long experience working in schools, colleges, youth centres, after-school clubs and universities, with workshops tailored to suit the age and ability of the student. Their aim is to inspire students and develop their learning with workshops in African Drumming, storytelling, mask making, jewellery making, ceramic making, and dancing. “I found the music session very enjoyable. The drumming helped to relax and uplift everyone ready for the activities that followed.
Drumming is a powerful way to enhance the creative potential of students, giving them self-confidence and self-esteem and is suitable for students of all ages with varied abilities and different backgrounds. African Drumming - Will bring authentic African drums and percussion instruments to your school and lead students through a memorable experience of music, community, and the discovery that everyone has a rhythm in the blood that can be shared! Emphasis is placed on learning how to play together through listening, cooperation, respecting, and teamwork. With the facilitation of the Drum planet team, each class will get the opportunity to play authentic African instruments and the group will create rhythms together. Workshops are flexible and can be tailored to meet requirements. Story Telling - is as much part of African life as songs, drums, and other African art forms. The history of most rural parts of Africa are passed on orally from generation to generation and older people are viewed as a key link to the past. They are custodians of history and they tell the stories they were told by their parents and by their parents' parents and so on. Story telling workshops tell the stories as they would be told in Africa and attempts to recreate the village kitchen and establish the belief that the group are there in Africa. . African Dance Workshops - A dance workshop provides an inspiring and memorable day that is both educational and fun and meets many requirements of the National Curriculum. Depending on age and ability, dance workshops encourage students to move imaginatively, respond to music and to choreographic instruction and to perform to a live audience. Workshops encourage teamwork and increase the awareness of group members as they complete their roles within the dance and enjoy a hugely rewarding experience. Mask Making Workshops - Masks and drums have been paired throughout human history. Mask-making is a natural visual art complimenting the musical arts offered by Drum Planet. In addition to completing a hands-on art project, students learn about the ways that masks have been used by different cultures of the world. Mask workshops require a minimum of 1 hour for simple mask-making, and 2-10 hours for more complex designs.

Circus Jim Circus skills workshops and shows
Circus Jim's most popular service in schools is a series of circus workshops over one day, e.g. four classes, with two Circus Jim teachers. During workshops children learn the basics of: balancing objects, spinning plates, juggling, diabolo, devil sticks and unicycling (where appropriate). Our aim is for everyone to achieve some skills and we structure the sessions to ensure that each individual succeeds from the very beginning. Another favourite is the performance project, where one group spends time training before performing their skills, or parading for the whole school or community, often as part of an 'arts week'. Other skills we offer include: stilt-walking, tightrope, walking globe, human pyramids and simple performance skills. Workshops can be tailored for Scout, Guide and Brownie Groups (contributing towards a Circus Badge). Circus Jim is experienced at targeting teaching to the needs of the group. The whole team believe that anyone and everyone can enjoy the Circus experience. For example, with young people with profound disabilities we focus on the tactile and sensory nature of the circus equipment and with young people with challenging behaviour we motivate them with the thrill of stilt-walking. The Circus Jim Show features a range of stunning circus skills and magic and lasts approximately forty minutes. Young and old are fascinated. A gentler version is popular with nurseries, where the show is sometimes combined with a simple 'have a go' session. For school events, eg fetes, a show can be combined with stilt-walking characters as well as an open 'have a go' workshop. Safety is always a top priority and where appropriate, workshop participants are provided with safety equipment eg. knee pads for stiltwalkers. Risk assessments can be provided. Jim Riley is a professional performer, qualified teacher and youth worker and has been teaching and performing circus skills for over twenty years. He was a leading figure in the national development of circus in education and youth circus and is supported by an excellent team of circus teachers. Circus Jim provides great opportunities to develop motivation, coordination, confidence, cooperation and communication skills, while learning new skills, getting exercise and having fun. A Circus Jim show or workshop will leave your school with a lasting feel good factor and the circus experience will develop your school’s communal spirit and leave your pupils with skills that can be carried over into future life and education.

Percussion4U Percussion workshops Laszlo Palko has been playing percussion instruments for over a decade, working professionally across the North West and specialising in Brazilian and African percussion and particular Samba and Latin American rhythms.
“The pupils certainly enjoyed their sessions, the staff were extremely impressed and we are all keen for you to return. Thanks again for contributing to a very successful and memorable Super Learning Day” Cathy Fitzwilliam-Pipe, St Peters High School, Manchester As former Musical Director of Zambura, Bury’s 50 member samba band, Laszlo has led a wide variety of workshops for schools, youth and community groups. He has also worked for the Manchester and Lancashire Music Services, teaching in both primary and secondary schools. He believes that young people can transcend the barriers of age, economics, race, language and physical challenge when they play percussion together. Samba drumming workshops are fun and full of learning opportunities. To spend a few hours learning to play unfamiliar rhythms on unfamiliar instruments and then to produce a creditable performance is enormously rewarding. Pupils find they can usually produce an acceptable sound on an instrument relatively quickly which makes it accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Playing as part of a group helps to dispel nerves and inspire confidence. The process encourages teamwork and engenders a sense of pride and achievement at the music produced. On an individual basis it can improve co-ordination and rhythm while developing listening skills, concentration and a sense of communal wellbeing. Workshops are therapeutic because the concentration required to listen and play will push all other thoughts out of the head and focus the mind in a positive way. Playing samba involves working as part of a team, rather than individual performances, which readily demonstrates the notion of 'the whole being greater than the sum of its parts’. It nurtures a sense of unity and encourages self-expression which results in positive self-esteem and confidence. Samba Workshops include an explanation of the basics, learning patterns for each instrument, playing in sections and together as a group, learning visual and whistle cues for starting and stopping, learning 'breaks' - the introduction of a different pattern, or a section playing on its own, learning two or three different rhythms.
16
Workshops can be run over a few hours, a weekend, away days (one or two days) or a course of shorter sessions. The benefits of drumming, percussion and dance are evident from the first session and the more time there is available, the more you will be able to achieve, by becoming comfortable and proficient in playing, learning a wider variety of rhythms and acquiring performance skills.

Drummers United Workshops and facilitation Drummers United is an educational and team building drumming organisation providing quality African drumming & dance workshops to schools and community groups. They have been running workshops since 1999, specialising in West African djembes and doun douns (bass drums) and Latin American congas, bongos and other hand percussion.
“We would like to comment that the whole school, staff and pupils alike, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Not only was everyone able to participate, but your program was tailored to suit every age group. Parents have commented on the fact that their children had a fantastic time. Carol Mason, Headteacher, Cheswick Green PS, Solihull
to produce spontaneous rhythms, which can lead to the creation of their own African styled rhythm and timetables can also be tailored to include sessions for school cluster meetings as a fun team building exercise.
They provide drumming workshops that are fun, inclusive, exciting and energising, that everyone is guaranteed to enjoy. The main benefit is providing an outlet for children of any age to express themselves through drumming, while building selfconfidence and working as a team. Workshops can also be adapted to suit the fluctuating abilities of pupils with special needs. All sessions start with an introduction/ history of the drums. Reception class sessions are mainly fun based with noise association games i.e. play our drums quietly it sounds like rain and loud sounds like thunder. Children get the chance to start and stop the group by using a 'magic stick'. This aims to give the class an experience with drums as opposed to creating rhythms. Y1/ Y2's enjoy rhythm based games and also have the opportunity to lead the group. Sessions end with everyone playing a simplistic rhythm with an opportunity for the more enthusiastic members to 'solo/showcase' depending on timetables. Y3/ Y4 sessions are similar but also employ cross rhythms, splitting the group in 2, with each side playing opposing rhythms. Y5/ Y6 sessions aim to create traditional West African styled rhythm complete with 'calls and responses', but still use games to break down inhibitions & shyness. The end product is a rhythm up to performance standard which could be performed to the rest of the school in an assembly, timetable permitting. A timetable will provide half hour segments for younger pupils, with 1 hour sessions for older ones or the day can concentrate on specific year groups to give them a focused session geared towards a performance.

Secondary school workshops contain an educational introduction, 'ice-breaking' rhythm games, instructions on drumming, a facilitation stage and teaching traditional West African rhythms which encourages trust, as each section relies on the other to perform a cross rhythm. Pupils are encouraged

Danny Zapparelli’s Circus Skills Workshops are a wonderful school activity and offer supporting links to curriculum subjects such as music, art and physical education. They provide unique, engaging, and fun packed sessions that will live long in the memory of all who participate.
“Danny’s work at the school has really opened the imaginations of the children as well as giving them real life experience of plate spinning, walking on stilts, tight rope walking and juggling. This yearly activity is enjoyed by pupils and staff and as a regular visitor, Danny delivers the workshop with a clear explanation of what a circus is, what it includes and excludes, and the skills necessary to be a circus performer. We thoroughly enjoy the workshops, and would most definitely recommend his services” Geoff Barlow, Head Teacher and Susan Elles, Director of Arts Prestwich Community High School
song. A boo-able villain with a chain-saw offers an original twist to the panto-like performance. This is children’s entertainment which will delight them and give a genuine, clear 'green' message that our planet has to be cared for. 'The Magic Tree' is the only tree in the forest being destroyed for a building development. The hero Roxy Foxy and the Crimson Fairy contrive to save it with the help of the Wizard of course! There are cuddly amusing glove puppet animals; Slippery Snail, Croaky Crow and Cyril Squirrel who pop out of the holes in the tree. The chainsaw wielding villain makes for lots of audience participation.

NK Theatre Arts All Inclusive Theatre Company NK Theatre Arts is Stockport and Greater Manchester's Premier All Inclusive Theatre Company based at The Forum Theatre in Romiley. They have a specific project dealing with outreach work in Schools, Colleges, and Youth Centres called “Interact”, split into 4 different areas and offering a comprehensive mix of education and information with particular and specific age appropriate content. School Curriculum Support - NK Theatre Arts provide theatre performances which can be studied by schools learning about a specific topic, for example World War 1 in history. Other performances are given which compliment set texts as part of GCSE/A Level Drama or English Literature. Schools are invited to The Forum Theatre to watch the performances, which are followed by a Director’s Workshop, giving the students the opportunity to discover more about the piece and talk to the actors etc. Themed Workshops – practitioners/actors will visit your school, or students can visit The Forum to take part in a Performing Arts workshop which is centred on a specific theme. This again could be linked to the National Curriculum, which could for example, see a Roman soldier visit your classroom in character and costume to talk about what life was like in Roman times, or Guy Fawkes could pay a visit to talk about The Gunpowder Plot. Sessions are age appropriate and focus on teaching a particular area of study accordingly. PPA Cover & After School Clubs - NK Practitioners can take sessions in schools to deliver Performing Arts workshops as PPA Cover for teachers, or as part of your school’s after school provision. If this involves regular weekly sessions with the same group, they can be used to work toward a performance by the students. Issue Based Presentations – the group is renowned throughout the North West for its hard hitting plays which aim to educate and inform young people about many important issues, with specific relevance to their age group. Radio is ideally suited to educational establishments such as primary and secondary schools, and higher education centres. A school radio station provides a cost effective and engaging platform for your students to express their opinions, and to develop communication and listening skills while having lots of fun.
“Since the start of Radio Warren at the beginning of the autumn term all pupils have had the opportunity to broadcast over the airwaves and The Big Friday Show is the highlight of the school week. There is evidence of a powerful impact of pupils’ speaking and listening skills.” Julie Wharton, SEN Inspector regarding Shirley Warren School

School Radio Create your own school radio station
Radio is an inclusive activity for all ages and abilities which is less intimidating than other media, encourages speaking and listening skills, builds confidence and teamwork and provides a ‘voice’ for your students ideas and opinions. School Radio packages are designed to provide all the equipment that you will need to start your school radio station and a simple interface means that children of all ages and abilities will be able to get involved. Radio can be applied to education in a number of exciting ways. First there are the obvious areas like communication skills, drama and music but there are endless opportunities for schools to explore with their radio equipment. As more schools turn to radio as an educational tool, the range of projects and ideas is growing exponentially. • Make an Advert - pupils create a radio advert for a fictional product. They decide on the product, research similar products, come up with a name and marketing concept for the product. They write a script for the advert, record any necessary sound effects before finally producing their advert. The adverts are then played to the class for review. • Historic Event News Coverage – Students research a historic event and record a radio news article as if reporting live. They think about what it would have been like to be there, and how it may have been reported to the general public at the time. Students can then write a script for the news article, possibly including interviews with 'key' people involved. • Record A Radio Play – Performing a radio play is easier than putting on a real play as no scenery is needed and students can read from scripts instead of learning lines, but it is also much more interesting than simply reading a play. Students can also consider sound effects and how to create the atmosphere of the play in an 'audio only' environment. Radio is a versatile medium that can be used in almost all areas of education at all levels and will add a new and dynamic dimension to your school curriculum.

JUDO The Olympic Sport of Judo is one of the few sports accessible to almost anyone, including children, and people with disabilities. Because it emphasizes physical and mental development, its influence extends to every area of a person’s life. Physically, Judo improves flexibility, coordination, balance and reflexes. It is a means of self-defence that requires skill rather than just size or strength. Mentally, it promotes concentration, self-confidence and leadership. Because Judo requires a clear and focused mind, it encourages participants to be fully present in the moment. They become more observant and better able to channel their mental and physical energy. With its strict moral and ethical principles, and its humanitarian approach to life, Judo fosters a sense of respect and consideration. Participants are taught to strive for physical, intellectual and moral perfection, so they can not only improve their own life, but also contribute to the greater good. FENCING The Olympic Sport of Fencing is not only an adventurous way to make sure your pupils achieve their five hours of weekly physical activity, the sport also offers an array of benefits to the long-term health of anyone who participates. Fencing provides a perfect form of cardio vascular exercise, as it's a fast-paced activity that gets the heart pumping and oxygen flowing. This leads to benefits including increased stamina, strengthened heart and lungs and increased immune function. It also reduces stress in a safe and enjoyable manner which is excellent during the examination months. With its complex physical manoeuvres, fencing also helps develop muscle strength, reflexes, flexibility, and coordination. The positions and movements in fencing must be precise to be powerful. In order to perfect that precision, the body must 30
become flexible and strong. In fencing, as in any martial art, power and precision go hand in hand.

“The poetry show was brilliant… Well matched to the children’s abilities and interests. The workshops at key stage 2 were also praised with the children enjoying the tasks given. We all enjoyed the day and learned lots.” Mrs Hartland, Brookhouse Primary School, Blackburn
Over three hundred of his mainstream poems have been published in literary magazines, including Stand, PN Review, and Poetry Nottingham, and his poems are widely anthologised. During the last five years he has visited over two hundred schools to perform his work, and organize writing workshops for children in foundation class and Key Stages 1,2 and 3 and he also provides poetry days and workshops for adult learners, libraries, and special schools. He can guarantee a lively interactive day, and poems galore, starting with a half hour poetry show for all the Key Stages. For the younger students he provides the props, costumes, scenery, puppets, voices and songs which bring the poetry to life. A fun sheet, often with a poem of his, helps children to explore how a poem is made; and children are encouraged to write their own poems in a similar style. The pupils perform for each other, and there are lots of ideas to follow up at all ability levels. Poetry days and workshops are a fantastic introduction to live poetry and provide fresh stimulus and incentives for pupils to explore and experiment with poetry and literature. Classes are fun and engaging and the days are structured and planned to ensure productivity and continuity. Philip’s wealth of teaching experience and performance skills produce the perfect combination of class work and entertainment to generate positive results. Poetry days can be booked to coincide with wider literacy programmes or school projects and workshops can be tailored to suit particular curriculum demands or specific areas of work within your school.

Apples and Snakes Poets in education
Poetry workshops are an excellent, way to develop the confidence, self-esteem, literacy and life skills of children. With15 years experience and many artists to choose from, Apples & Snakes can match your needs to the poets best able to provide a positive experience for you. Workshops allow children to learn from top performance poets, create poems of their own and perform their own work. Apples & Snakes also provide Inset periods to examine creative ways of using poetry as a teaching aid across all subjects; Syllabus-based workshops, referencing the National curriculum; Performance Poets from diverse cultural backgrounds who encourage participants to find their voice and discover hidden talents; Developing interest and enthusiasm for language is fundamental to learning to read, write and communicate. Early Years artists use strategies to engage children in the pleasure of language, emphasising spoken words and storytelling using games, activities and performance. Artists work on group poems, chants and action verses, and look at patterned language within stories. This builds the child’s confidence with using word and creating stories. Global stories also provide opportunities for further work in the classroom. From 7 to 11 years - Children are building on the basic literacy skills acquired in the early years. They are instinctively creative in their use of spoken language and this can be used to develop the written word. Artists can help to develop writing technique by examining the drafting process, how to structure a piece of writing, developing character and writing for different audiences. The foundation years are vital in the transition from spoken to written word. Apples & Snakes poets facilitate this process and their presence in class provides inspiration. From 11 to 16 - Apples & Snakes see poetry as a useful tool across the school curriculum not just in English. Their artists can contribute significantly in the teaching of Citizenship and specific projects are being developed to cover the themes it embraces. Artists play an extremely important role as positive role-models for young people, particularly within African-Caribbean and Asian communities.

Integrate Education Nurturing Creative Potential The power of creativity to motivate and engage young people has been well documented. Integrate Education have been working with a broad spectrum of educational establishments and international organisations for many years, to support teachers in their own classrooms and school environments to develop innovative approaches to teaching.
“Integrate has made a significant contribution to the development of creative teaching and learning in Wakefield schools. They have consistently delivered high quality CPD for Wakefield teachers across a range of curricular themes, empowering teachers to develop their own strategies for creativity across the curriculum” Keith Worrall, School Improvement Advisor, Wakefield LA
dance/drama in education, kinaesthetic approaches to teaching and learning, partnership development, CPD, or GCSE & A' Level examination syllabi. In addition they have successfully project managed a range of creative and learning programmes including CPD programmes, Creative Learning Programmes, teaching and learning conferences and DVD productions to disseminate national case studies.
Employers want creative people who see connections, are problem solvers, have ideas, are innovative, and communicate well while 60% of children in primary schools today will work in jobs not yet invented. In attempting to explore the requirements of an education system to equip students for such a changing world, the government has prioritised creative learning and thinking skills. Integrate Education believe that the skills required of children must first be fostered in staff so that teachers have the confidence and inspiration to implement new ways of working. Their work has featured in TES and NUT Teacher Magazine and been recommended by the U.N.’s educational arm UN. Schools are discovering the cost and efficiency benefits of organising Inset in-house rather than sending staff on expensive courses which disrupt pupil learning. Integrate can visit you to deliver whole school inset, looking at generic approaches to Creative Teaching and Learning, Thinking Skills, or offer bespoke departmental inset in specific Art forms. INSET packages develop practical skills with teachers to enable confident planning, assessment and delivery of a creative curriculum. Practitioners can come and work alongside one teacher, developing and co-delivering schemes of work to children, or whole staff can be taken through practical and transferable activities. A valuable form of INSET training is to observe one of Integrate’s experienced staff in action, working with pupils for you to see first hand, how easy some of the techniques are and how readily pupils engage. All exemplar lessons are based on tried and tested approaches to creative teaching and learning and utilise aspects of arts based pedagogy to access a wide range of curriculum areas.

Rona visits schools as a Storyteller and is so well received; she is asked to return again and again and has never looked back, with over 90% of her work obtained through personal recommendation. Rona works, not only in Schools, but also in Libraries, Country Parks, community venues and in Commercial settings. Her storytelling skills are a wonderfully engaging form of entertainment suitable for all ages and engender a genuine interest in all aspects of the spoken word, literature, language, communication, drama and theatre. of behaviourally challenged children within these settings. This successful project culminated in some of the more "difficult children" engaging in story writing, play writing and performing their own productions. As a result, these children found it easier to re-integrate into mainstream classes and she has since been commissioned to continue this work at other schools. A lifetime of study and ardent interest in all things to do with the personal psyche, Rona is a natural Emotional Therapist and her work with needy children and adults is testament to this. She has had considerable recognition for her work with children with behavioural problems including, excluded children and she passionately believes "They just haven't yet learned how to make people listen".

Martin Mere Wetland Centre Autumn visits Martin Mere Wetland Centre is home to over 100 species of rare and endangered ducks, geese, swans, flamingos and beavers. Open all year round, it offers pupils of all ages hands-on learning experiences led by experienced Teacher Explainers, and a safe environment in which to explore the wealth of Lancashire's wildlife. Inquisitive Hawaiian Geese will nibble grain from the hand whilst you tour the world's wetlands through the carefully planned pathways. In contrast, watch, from the comfort and choice of ten lookout hides, internationally important numbers of ducks, geese and swans gathering in winter to form spectacular feeding flocks on seasonally flooded wetlands which enjoy SSSI (Site of Scientific Interest)/SPA (Special Protection Area) and Ramsar status. Contrary to popular belief the season at Martin Mere doesn’t finish at the end of summer. The wonderful natural habitat is a hive of activity right through until October and November. Autumn is a particularly good time for a school field trip to Martin Mere. They have recently built four new dipping ponds, enclosed in a giant cage so the birds can’t get in and eat the pond creatures, that stay alive right up to the onset of winter! Another advantage of an Autumn visit is that with fewer school parties present they can give your group their undivided attention! They also run extremely successful programmes on habitats, food chains and webs, and adaptations, right through to November. Also in November, the geese and swans arrive from Iceland for the winter, and the whole place exudes a genuine buzz of excitement as they welcome back old friends with their new families among the famous Whooper swans. The migration programme ‘My Great Adventure’ includes a trip to the 75m long Swanlink Hide to watch a daily swan feed, plus games and science role-play activities. Autumn is a great time for field trips to Martin Mere as it gives you, the teacher, the chance to get to know your new class in a relaxed and natural environment. A room for lunch and support you while you are here is all provided, and you will find staff very friendly, positive, approachable and knowledgeable. There are days available during our schools’ Living History fortnight, which runs from 23rd September to 3rd October inclusive. Schools can bring a maximum of 40 children and choose either Celts and Romans, or Vikings. You will be sent plenty of information beforehand suggesting how to dress as a native of Mere Tun; all about the roundhouse village, and what authentic food to bring. Martin Mere Wetland Centre caters for groups of all ages, from schools, colleges, scouts, brownies, cubs, and play-schemes.

Ydalir Vikings The Vikings in Manchester Ydalir is the Manchester group of The Vikings, the UK's oldest and largest Dark Age re-enactment society. Their events represent aspects of life in Viking Europe, from combat displays to domestic crafts. In Norse mythology Ydalir (“Yew Dales”) was home to Ull the winter god and noted for being eternally damp. As Manchester, is noted for its rainfall, they chose Ydalir Vikings as an appropriate name.
“Hands-on sessions in authentic viking crafts” Vikings in the classroom: Key Stage 2 (KS2) Ydalir Vikings have an educational programme for schools in the Greater Manchester area in support of the National Curriculum KS2: Invaders and Settlers. Members of their experienced team will visit your school in full Viking dress, and lead a half or full-day session which can be tailored to suit your needs. Sessions can cover the origin and settlements of the Vikings, social structures, domestic life, law and government, folklore and religion, textiles, games, combat, and art and craft. We bring reproduction artefacts which the children can handle, and can arrange hands-on sessions in authentic Viking crafts, giving each child something to take away with them. They have produced a teacher's resource pack to support the visit, giving lots of ideas both for preparing for a visit, and for follow-up work. Ydalir Vikings schools team for KS2 The Ydalir Vikings schools team was formed in 1996 in order to address the needs of the KS2 Vikings topic, drawing upon its member’s wealth of experience from school visits during the previous ten years, and from a range of educational programmes run by other organisations. Their joint experience and knowledge of the Viking period is vast and eclectic, and classroom discussions have ranged from such diverse subjects as de-forestation in tenth century Norway to the role of children and inheritance laws. Roman Tours Ltd Interactive history workshops Roman Tours Ltd illustrate the story of the Roman invasion of Britain and the assimilation of British tribes into the empire 2,000 years ago. They achieve this through a combination of visits to schools and exciting museum based workshops and field trips in Chester, taking history off the page and breathing real life into it.
“We had our first 'Gladiator Workshop' for KS2. It was an amazing and exhilarating experience for the children. They were awestruck by the lanista, the gladiator and the ferocious bear!!!” St Margaret Ward Primary
If your school is planning a trip to Chester to study the Romans, Roman Tours Ltd can add a new dimension to your learning through their partnership with the Grosvenor Museum. Schools find a visit to the museum combined with a Roman soldier patrol is an ideal way to start the topic or reinforce the teaching that has already been done. Groups are met at the museum by a Roman soldier in full armour and brought to attention by the sergeant major who welcomes them to service in the legions. Pupils are then each given a set of armour to wear (lightweight plastic) and receive an insight into the life of a Roman soldier and the rigours he endured in the British climate. They swear an oath to the emperor before heading out on patrol to various Roman remains including Chester’s own amphitheatre. Many schools find that a Roman visiting their school is a more convenient and cost effective way to add first hand experience to Roman history at primary or secondary level. Roman Tours Ltd visit schools, dressed in full replica armour with replica equipment, copied from items discovered during archaeological investigations. Artefacts include a full marching pack, with soldier's rations, underwear, fire lighting kit, money, clothes, pots, tools, wine, spices and more. Pupils are engaged through curriculum-relevant role play, character acting, question and answer sessions and other activities, providing a unique and memorable educational experience. Topics covered include life of the soldier, impact on British culture, Roman society, medicine, military training and drill, towns, roads, sanitation, ladies and make up. Visits are extremely informative and can be individually tailored to suit teacher's lesson plans. Visits are interactive with pupils dressing in armour, marching and doing formation practice including the tortoise, a formation that needs testing by the teachers throwing (Safe) missiles to illustrates effective teamwork and why it was so important to life in the Roman army. Roman tour outreach programme is a fun, informative and hands on educational experience for pupils and teacher alike and is available as a full or half day presentations.

Llangollen Wharf Horse drawn canal boat trips Llangollen Wharf is one of the major attractions in the North Wales market town of Llangollen. From the Wharf you can embark on either a horse drawn boat trip along the feeder for the main canal, or a motorised aqueduct cruise which will take your party across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Built by Thomas Telford between 1795 and 1805 the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the country’s biggest navigable aqueduct towering a massive 126ft above the River Dee, supported on 18 stone piers and listed as a world heritage site. Both trips take in the magical sights and sounds of the beautiful Llangollen Canal and are suitable for all Keystages supporting National Curriculum subjects including history, geography, science, business studies - tourism and leisure. Visitors have enjoyed trips from the Wharf for 100 years and the experience is like stepping back in time. There are three different boats trips available from the Wharf: 45 minute Horse Drawn Boat Trip - leaves the Wharf westwards for 1 mile before the horse changes ends and brings the boat back. This length of canal is not used by motor boats so the water is crystal clear and there are often fish to be seen. The boat passes the Royal International Pavilion and under 2 bridges before running alongside the steam railway. This trip is suitable for all ages and can run any time between 10.00am and 3.00pm by arrangement. 2 hour Horse Drawn Boat Trip - goes in the same direction but continues along the Dee valley passing under 2 more bridges and crossing a small aqueduct before arriving at the Chain Bridge Hotel. A scheduled stop here allows you to admire the chain bridge across the River Dee, and marvel at the man-made Horseshoe Falls, created by Thomas Telford. This is the most beautiful stretch of canal and the horse drawn trip is the perfect way to see it. This trip can run at any time between 10.00am and 2.00pm by arrangement but is not suitable for very young children.

Eurotaps Ltd Pressatap™ Save Water Save Money A standard tap can waste 12 litres of water a minute. Water wastage can be financially damaging to schools, businesses and households alike and has a detrimental effect on the environment as a contributing factor to drought. There is a growing recognition of the need for water conservation and Eurotaps have a practical and convenient solution to reduce water wastage. “The key to water efficiency is reducing waste, not restricting use. About one third of the water each person uses on a daily basis is wasted – it runs straight down the plughole or down the toilet without being used... If we do not take action now, climate change, population shifts and behaviour mean the UK will face increased water stress in the future.” Waterwise According to Waterwise, the key to water efficiency is reducing waste not restricting use. The largest causes of water wastage are dripping taps and taps left running for no reason. The Eurotaps solution to the problem is an innovative range of tap inserts which can save up to 90% on an average water bills in high usage areas. The tap inserts are ideal in areas of high volume usage where wastage is generally higher. The Pressatap is the most costeffective tap on the market. It is an ingeniously simple delay tap mechanism, which can be fitted by almost anyone to almost any existing taps without expensive plumbing or tap replacement. There are three types of insert; a straight on and off which releases water only when the top of the tap is pressed down by hand; a timed delay which allows you to control the water flow between 0-20 seconds and a timed delay special which only releases water once the tap top is depressed and released thus saving even more water and expense. When you take your hand off the top of the tap, the water flow ceases immediately. So say goodbye to dripping taps! It is so easy to operate; even a child can do it! The Pressatap is produced and assemble by a dedicated team at the company’s northwest production unit, guaranteeing a quality product and high level of quality assurance. Eurotaps supply many establishments such as H.M. Government Buildings, factories and schools and their products will suit all your requirements, even for different-sized taps.

With an associate company Eurotaps also offer a full washroom refurbishment service and can advise on other water related areas, including water saving cisterns, aerated showers etc. The company are now associated with Waterwise, the independent body tasked with reducing national water wastage. They are also listed on the Water Technologies Website which is part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme, enabling 100% first year allowances on investments in technologies and encouraging sustainable water use.

Places Matter! Architectural activities
Working with teachers is one way that Places Matter! do this. A series of CPD sessions to support teachers delivering the Construction and Built Environment Diploma is currently being delivered. Sessions bring together teachers and design professionals to provide support, ideas and practical, up to date knowledge to help them deliver the design units. Sessions cover a range of issues such as sustainability, inclusive design and careers within the sector and include site visits, workshops and talks by experts from the sector. Architecture and the built environment provides opportunities for enhancing learning right across the curriculum, and can help deliver subjects like Art and Design, Citizenship, English and Design Technology. Places Matter! will therefore deliver CPD sessions for teachers to help them use this excellent resource. Through working with design professionals, teachers are more likely to come away inspired with creative ideas about introducing pupils to the Built Environment. Places Matter! can also work with schools undergoing redevelopment to maximise learning opportunities by bringing architects and landscape architects to work with school pupils and engage them in the design process, again linking the learning to the curriculum. Site visits, creative workshops, design projects and research are all potential offers leading to a wide range of skill development for pupils In partnership with Urbis, Places Matter! is delivering the Northwest component of the national Architecture for Everyone campaign which aims to engage young people from inner-city Manchester and Liverpool who have an interest in architecture. A series of intensive, exciting workshops will give them an insight into the value of the built environment and the skills to help them pursue a career in the sector. The project hopes to identify and support emerging architectural talent amongst groups traditionally excluded from entering the profession, in particular young people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds and socially excluded communities.

They are also delivering an exciting conference in spring 2010 for Year 10 pupils to promote careers in architecture and the built environment to young people in the Northwest. The conference will be a unique opportunity to give young people a genuine insight into the sector, raise awareness of the stimulating careers on offer while seeking to increase awareness of the value of good design and the impact that the built environment has on everybody's life.

Cherry Chung Willow Weaving Bend your imagination! Cherry Chung is an experienced willow artist undertaking workshops and projects both classroom based and within school grounds. Willow weaving techniques are used to create sculptures ranging from parade lanterns, mobiles and giant insects, to outdoor play structures such as living fences and dens, with the emphasis on the artform as a living learning tool. indoor sculpture, such as play dens, screens, calm spaces, and lanterns, or extend the art form into the outdoors, and build living willow structures such as tunnels, dens and fences. Living structures have the added interest of a form which changes throughout the seasons, and which can be harvested for its new growth in the winter.
Cherry Chung works with basketry and living willow withies to make structures and sculptures. Willow and the varied ways it can be worked, lends itself to the creation of a wide diversity of forms, from baskets to figurative or abstract decorative screens and sculptures, as well as functional living art like seating and shelters. The shape and feel of woven willow is very organic and it is a sustainable resource, being coppiced yearly. Willows are a native species, and before they are used basketry grade willows undergo minimal processing which is limited to boiling and drying, without any chemical additives. This makes it an environmentally friendly material which satisfies the requirements of Sustainable/Eco schools status and enhances your school’s ‘green credentials’. Projects can be as simple or as complex as the imagination allows, and a living, growing sculpture gives the added dimensions of seasonal changes in colour and form; a demonstration of growth cycles, and a potential harvest for future projects. Cherry particularly enjoys making sculptures that convey an element of surprise in their size, for example 3 foot long ants, 6 foot dragonflies, or an octopus straddling a school playground. Living willow structures are naturally sinuous and curved, and provide a soft and organic form of landscaping. To be able to create a basket or sculpture from a pile of sticks using little more than your hands, is an experience that many people, adults and children alike, find to be deeply satisfying, and therapeutic. As an established and respected artist Cherry has worked extensively, across the North West for the past decade. Many of the willow sculptures she has produced have been in collaboration with groups, including schools; youth projects; residents’ associations; and other community groups as well as with the general public. Within schools, the development of a willow sculpture project can be cross curricular, encompassing maths, art and design, biology, and history. 72

Small Steps to Success believes that children can aspire to be anything they want to be in life with hard work, determination and above all true belief in their abilities. They provide quality workshops for children that will inspire and motivate them to develop a more positive attitude to life and learning, in a bid to make their lives and futures better. Katie Small set up Small Steps to Success to provide children with the inspiration, motivation and encouragement to achieve success in their lives. Research has shown that motivating children at an early age is the best way of having a long lasting effect on the rest of their lives. Schools are the best place to reach all children and help them to make their lives better and to take responsibility for their futures. Katie began her teaching career in a deprived area of Liverpool where she recognised the talent and potential many children have, regardless of their backgrounds. Her passion for positive thinking and teaching has been life long and she has studied the topic for many years. She couldn’t understand why motivational speaking only existed for adults and believed that it could also benefit children and that having more positive children in the world will have positive results for schools, teachers, parents and society.
• Motivating children to believe in themselves and their abilities. • Raise children's aspirations, hopes and dreams so they aim for more out of life. • Teaching children how the power of positive thinking can encourage success. • Building children's confidence and self-esteem. • Encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own lives.

Laughology Enhancing learning Humour and laughter play an important role in the learning process and Laughology offer a range of unique services to schools and other educational establishments, using laughter and humour techniques to enhance learning and teaching skills.
“Humour helps to connect left-brain activities with the right-brain creative side. This connection allows learners to experience a refreshing pause and better absorb the information being presented. Humour results in better information recall and an increase in long term retention”. Todd T Holm PhD ‘Humour and Learning’, December 29, 2004
Their programmes are equally well received by both learners and tutors and Laughology will work with your school to ensure your aims and objectives are met. The Laughology effect is sustainable and keeps on working as teachers can continue to use the techniques and methods to compliment and support their teaching of the curriculum.
Appropriate humour in a learning environment fosters mutual respect, provides commonalities and connections between tutors and learners and can also increase class attendance. Tutors who use strategies that promote the connection between humour and learning provide learners with the most memorable learning experiences. Humour affects learning outcomes, particularly in ‘difficult subjects’. Humour can reduce anxiety and aid self confidence which improves student receptiveness and ultimately has a positive affect on test performance. The area of the brain used for flexible thinking and problem solving is the same area of the brain we use for processing humour and for ‘getting the joke’. By using humour in learning we are accessing and exercising our flexible thinking which encourages development of key learning and thinking skills such as creativity and problem solving. Employers are also looking for more than just technical skills and knowledge of degree discipline. They particularly “value skills such as communication, team working and problem solving. Young people who can demonstrate these skills have a real advantage’. Digby Jones – Director General CBI Humour is a thinking skill. Laughology encourages the qualities and skills needed for success in learning and life and increases awareness of mental and physical health by introducing techniques for positive interaction. Laughology encourages an approach to learning that is safe, fun and engaging. They work with you, so that the events are designed around the needs of your school, but also tailored to the needs and aspirations of each child. Every Child Matters and every child can laugh! Issues and experiences are explored in a fun and creative way which encourages:

She has extensive networks in the field of Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) and in the business world. She says “When I left school, there were lots of jobs to choose from and I expected to have a career for life. Young people today can no longer expect to have a single ‘career’. Instead they need to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will equip them to navigate the world of work, make progress and manage a series of transitions throughout their life”. These can be developed through an effective Careers Education programme which provides access to up to date, impartial Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG). "A whole school approach to IAG is vital: supporting young people to make decisions that will impact on their later learning and career options has to be central to a school's mission." Illumination Educational Software has developed a regularly updated online resource on genetics called Gene Journey. The site includes an extensive video library which provides a rich resource to stimulate debate on issues which will affect all our lives. On offer is a range of workshops which use Gene Journey and innovative software they have designed specifically for debates.
“I enjoyed using the Virtual Lab in class; it was fun being told what to do by my friends if I got stuck. I would also like to use it at home where I can work at my own pace.” GCSE Biology Student at Wirral County Grammar School for Boys “We think it is brilliant...It is the best resource we have seen for the teaching of these topics.” Marlene Griffin, Head of Biology, Hitchin High School.
Gene Journey includes video, animation and a variety of interactive tasks. It is being used by a wide range of students studying genetics at school, college and university – from GCSE and A-level biology students to nursing and biological science undergraduates. Gene Journey can be used in class as a group activity or students can work at their own pace either in a computer suite or from home.

Gene Journey Supporting biology and ethics
Many of the tasks work extremely well with an interactive whiteboard. The aim of ‘Chromosome Challenge’ is to identify all the human chromosomes. Oliver, a GSCE Biology Student, from St Anselm’s Catholic College comments: “Really interesting, a great way to learn and much better than the way we did it in class when we had to cut out the chromosomes and stick them in a book”. The site also includes an innovative virtual cytogenetics lab allowing students to carry out a series of interactive tasks, based on how samples of amniotic fluid are analysed in a real laboratory. Tasks include tissue culture and analysing a PCR sample; the experience provides a genuine feel for what it is like to work in a lab. Gene Journey includes video clips of people whose work involves genetics, as well as people affected by genetic conditions. For example, Nobel Prize winner, John Sulston, who played a leading role in the Human Genome Project, discusses the ethics of patenting genes. As well as providing an invaluable interactive educational resource, the site aims to empower young people to play an active part in the debate on how genetics should impact on all our lives now and in the future. Ding Ding! Public Transport Awareness The journey to and from school is an integral part of the day for pupils and teachers and for many it would not be possible without public transport. Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) has devised an innovative website to educate younger pupils about the importance of public transport and remove the stigma that it sometimes carries.

The site is useful for cross-curricular IT lessons, using interactive games to help children understand important issues such as the ‘Green Cross Code’ and pedestrian safety such as ‘Walking Safely’ and ‘Be Seen Be Safe’. Many of the games have different levels so that pupils can increase their knowledge and awareness as they progress. The site introduces children to skills that can be carried over from the classroom into general life by first presenting them in a transport setting. An example would be learning how to plan a public transport route will teach the importance of being organised.

GMPTE understand the importance of education and much of the content, such as ‘Traffic Survey’ can be expanded into lessons beyond the IT room and GMPTE can provide lesson plans to facilitate this. It can also be used as part of homebased learning between parents and their children. The site’s aim is to promote public transport and safety but it also has relevance across the curriculum, encouraging pupils to take a ‘journey around town’ and develop other key skills through game play along the way. Games like ‘Who’s the Driver?’ enhance memory function while ‘Destination Display and Gallery’ will utilise artistic skills, allowing them to design transport tickets. The site even has a Library that recommends a range of books from picture books to fiction for older children on the theme of transport. Pupils are also invited to get involved and suggest books for others to read or to write and submit their own reviews. Ding Ding! is funded by GMPTE

They offer young people the opportunity to learn the value of good design and increase their understanding of the impact of Design and Built Environment on society while also raising awareness of potential career opportunities.
“The programme of CPD set out is excellent and will help in our delivery no end. Liverpool College
Site visits, creative workshops, design projects and research are all potential offers leading to a wide range of skill development for pupils

At its simplest, Learning Outside the Classroom involves young people moving outside their immediate and accustomed environment to learn from first-hand experiences. Wherever young people learn, from the ages of 0 to 19, learning outside the classroom has a part to play as an integral element in that learning. All young people should experience learning outside the classroom and its benefits as a central aspect of the learning experience, the curriculum and the courses they are engaged with. By stepping outside the classroom the opportunity exists to transform learning and raise achievement. Learning Outside the Classroom allows participants to learn in context, to learn by practical engagement, and to learn by personal discovery. Students can master new skills, work collaboratively with others and develop a better sense of themselves and their potential. There really is no limit to where Learning Outside the Classroom can take place. Give it a try! Photograph courtesy of Martin Mere Wetland Centre

Learning opportunities down on the farm Farms are as varied as the food we eat and provide opportunities for learning both in a formal context and by enhancing the social and emotional aspects of development. They may focus on livestock or arable production, or a combination, and be self-contained units or part of huge estates. There are a number that have developed as community and city farms which may be working farms, or smaller organisations that form a part of a community which can be visited by schools. Every aspect of a farm visit gives opportunities for direct and indirect learning, by experiencing the unique sights, sounds and smells. A farm visit gives young people the opportunity to understand where the food we eat comes from, and an understanding of how food production affects the countryside. Farms offer many unique learning opportunities, from the power of simple first-hand experiences, such as witnessing the birth of a lamb in spring or walking through a field of wheat which stretches to the horizon, to getting to grips with microbes in action in a dairy as milk turns into cheese or getting a glimpse into the many varied careers involved in keeping the countryside flourishing. A farm visit might focus on: ‘from field to plate’ — the journey made in the production of one food item such as milk, wheat or potatoes the impact on the landscape of farming operations the people and the diversity of farming careers — farm technology farming methods, perhaps comparing organic with conventional farming the natural environment geography and map work
Learning support Many farms provide learning materials they have produced to support your visit wether in the form of worksheets or activities to be carried out during the visit or on return to the classroom. Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) offers access to resources through its website and its network of regional education coordinators. It also provides signposts to many different organisations who offer support both in terms of resources to support your visit and other possible visits by people to the school or setting. FACE aim to educate children and young people about food and farming in a sustainable countryside. There is widespread concern about the way children, young people, and their families, have become disassociated from where their food comes from and don’t know what is required for a healthy diet and lifestyle. They are also unaware of the many opportunities in the countryside for leisure and social activities, and for employment. FACE aims to meet these educational needs by working with their members and partners to promote visits to farms, and to provide easy access to a wide range of high-quality educational resources and activities to complement both schoolbased studies and outdoor visits. 90
Their work with schools and young people is highly successful because of the immediate and widespread benefits of visits to the
outdoors, and of using food, farming and the countryside to support many aspects of the curriculum and by doing so they aim to:• stimulate interest and excitement;• link to all aspects and stages of the school curriculum;• allow pupils to see rural activities such as food production first-hand;• introduce pupils to a host of leisure activities in the countryside;• introduce pupils to rural career opportunities and the world of work. FACE works with pupils and teachers and provides a one-stop enquiry service, curriculum resources, Regional Education Coordinators, links with farmers and the rural industries and training for teachers. They also provide workshops for farmers and seminars, support and advice, alongside an accreditation system for countryside visits while also forging links between schools and farms. For more details of how your school can maximise the learning potential of the countryside or how FACE can assist with your school’s farm visits see the website www.face-online.org.uk.

Schools have used BBC Radio education resources for many years. BBC School Radio provides programmes to support teaching across a wide range of primary curriculum areas. The programmes offer a flexible, convenient resource with learning outcomes which carefully target curriculum objectives. They offer complete, interactive, ready-to-use sessions intended to inspire and motivate pupils. Most BBC School Radio programmes are supported by online Teacher's Notes which are free and simple to download and will include details of songs, poems, music and other material used within the programmes guidance on how programmes link to the curriculum lesson plans and other suggestions for integrating the programmes into your classroom work a comprehensive range of follow-up activities to support work in a variety of curriculum areas. School Radio programmes are available for schools in the UK to order on pre-recorded CDs. Each series offers a complete term's worth of material, available before the beginning of each term to enable lesson planning. Programmes are also available on demand via internet for 7 days after broadcast or they can be recorded during transmission. In addition to broadcast radio resources many schools are benefitting from setting up their own in school radio stations. Companies are springing up who can facilitate the creation of a radio station in school. This involves a consultation and installation
of equipment, industry standard software, training and support packages which will allow pupils to operate their own in school radio, create and broadcast content. The applications for radio in school are extensive and cover many curriculum subjects. It allows teachers to be creative during their lesson plans to fully utilise this powerful tool. Equally, it is a powerful tool with a uniquely engaging presence that adds a new dimension to learning, inspires participation and gets pupils enthused about learning. Covers curriculum areas ICT Applications of Literacy Framework: communication, language and listening. Every Child Matters/Community links. Collaborative and autonomous learning. Up-to-date VLE podcast/radio-feed creation. Transition agenda. Citizenship, PSE, Learning for Life and Work. Enterprise in Education. Public speaking skills and pupil confidence. Another option is subscription to an online radio resource where schools can create an online account and use a virtual studio to create, record and store content which can be broadcast as a blog and accessed by anyone with a computer, in school or from home. With so much professional help and advice available, and with a variety of cost effective alternatives on the market it has never been easier for schools to get involved with school radio and add this powerful resource to the curriculum.

The Government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched their Sustainable Schools Framework in 2006 when the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP set out challenging long-term aspirations for schools to mainstream learning about sustainable development issues and sustainable practices into everyday school life. Eco-Schools is an international award programme guiding schools on their sustainable journey and providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. It is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In addition to EcoSchools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests. There are 46 countries around the world running the Eco-Schools programme which links more than 40,000 schools around the world. It is now easy for Eco-Schools across the world to get in touch and explore ways of working together on environmental issues. Visit www.eco-schools.net where you will find instructions on how to register your school and carry out a search. After finding an EcoSchool that matches your criteria, you can then contact the ‘match’ school by post, telephone or email! Joining the Eco-Schools programme is free and it makes tackling sustainable issues manageable and easy for all schools, whether they are children’s centres, nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools or schools with special status. Once registered, schools follow a simple seven-step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity. Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to achieve them. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success.

Schools work towards gaining one of three awards – Bronze, Silver or the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. Bronze and Silver are both self accredited through the website and Green Flag is externally assessed by ENCAMS.
The Eco-Schools Programme is focused around nine key environmental topics: Water Learning how to conserve and reduce consumption Biodiversity School grounds provide an ideal opportunity to introduce children to the natural environment and to biodiversity in a practical way Energy All Eco-Schools must carry out an energy audit as part of their Environmental Review and set targets for reducing energy use through their Action Plan Global Perspectives Eco-Schools offers schools ways of obtaining global perspective with a school link or an international project on environmental issues Healthy Living Schools are key to promoting the health and well-being of young people and the wider community through Litter Many Eco-Schools choose to tackle litter as one of their first priorities following their Environmental Review School Grounds should be developed to satisfy educational and recreational requirements Transport Developing sustainable transport methods to reduce fuel consumption, pollution and car use. This includes cycling, rail, bus or walking Waste Developing policies to reduce, re use and recycle materials
However, by adopting the flexible framework of Eco-Schools and following its seven-step process, your school will also be addressing the following national initiatives: Sustainable Schools Strategy The Sustainable Schools Strategy highlights eight key doorways or areas where schools can become more sustainable. Healthy Schools promotes the health and well-being of pupils and staff through a well planned, taught curriculum in a physical and emotional environment that promotes learning and healthy lifestyle choices. International School Award support Eco-Schools linking with schools overseas as part of their Global Gateway and International Schools Award. ASDAN Awards The first nationally recognised qualification in sustainability for students in secondary schools. Every Child Matters to ensure every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, has the support they need to be healthy; stay safe; enjoy and achieve; make a positive contribution; and achieve economic well-being. Learning Outside The Classroom Often it is outside the classroom that children have their most memorable learning experiences.
Beswyke Lodge – sustainable school building The new MGS Junior School, Beswyke Lodge, opened its doors to pupils for the first time in September 2008. It is a perfect example of a sustainable building and received a prestigious Green Apple Award for its construction and design. The Green Apple awards are given by The Green Organisation, an independent group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour and recognising the benefits of environmental best practice. Beswyke Lodge incorporates south facing classrooms and daylight dimming lighting, condensing boilers and a heat recovery system. It was built from sustainable materials with features designed to maximise daylight, reduce U values, ensure passive solar gain, provide natural ventilation. The building has proved a great success in achieving its aims, to provide a secure and friendly environment, and an energy efficient solution with a sustainable design. Head of The Manchester Grammar School Junior Section Linda Hamilton said: It is a pleasure to work in a building that provides an object lesson in conservation. We aim to ensure that our boys fully appreciate the importance of preserving the world around them and Bexwyke Lodge is a fine example of an imaginative and intelligent approach to an environmentally friendly building.
North West Sustainable Schools The National Framework for Sustainable Schools was created as a means to engage and assist all schools in addressing the issues of sustainable development and to encourage education for sustainable development (ESD) to be embedded in schools. The framework is made up of 8 Doorways:
Food and drink Traffic and travel Energy and water Buildings and grounds Local well-being Waste and sustainable procurement Inclusion and participation
These can be summarised as 'Care for self, care for others and care for the environment' and has three cross-cutting themes, Campus, Community and Curriculum. This encourages schools to engage leadership, teaching and non teaching staff, young people and the local community in the agenda.

Eco-Schools, Healthy Schools and International School Awards are just some of the environmental award schemes on offer to schools. Sometimes it can be a little confusing as to how they all fit together, and the challenge is for schools to integrate the programmes on offer in a way which underpins the school ethos or climate for learning. There is no right or wrong way to do this as it will depend upon the school’s individual circumstances and the interests and passions of the school leadership, staff, parents and of course pupils.
North West Sustainable Schools DCSF released funds to the regions in 2007 to raise awareness of Sustainable Schools: the north west chose to create a full time post to promote the agenda with schools and Local Authorities (LAs), to create networks in the sub-regions to share good practice, run training around each doorway with those able to effect change, and to support LA engagement. There has been training for school management including bursars, a governors' conference working in partnership with NWCOGs and work has been undertaken with networks such as extended schools, the Diocese, and other relevant networks. Our main objectives have been to connect with and try to support existing ESD networks across the region and, where there were none, to develop them, and to ensure that existing networks working with schools are aware of the agenda. Activities North West Sustainable Schools brought together environmental education officers and ESD practitioners from across the ten Greater Manchester LAs to collaborate and run a Sustainable Schools conference. This event brought schools together from across the sub-region to learn from each other and share their best practice. It has also initiated a Greater Manchester network of expertise. 2009-2011 In 2009, objectives have slightly shifted with more emphasis on engaging LAs in a wider process. Embedding the National Framework for Sustainable Schools is an excellent means for LAs to address a multitude of agendas: not only does it focus on environmental sustainability, but it creates tangible links for the Children and Young People directorates. Furthermore, it helps build stronger and safer communities, has inclusion, health and well-being as core drivers, is proven to aid school attendance and levels of achievement, and has huge potential to drive forward CO2 savings. Added to this LAs are discovering that schools emit between 50-60% of the carbon for which they are responsible and, with schools being a part of the Carbon Reduction Commitment, it is imperative that schools become communities of good practice around energy use and energy efficiency. Consequently, North West Sustainable Schools is encouraging LAs to baseline and work with this agenda in an internal, cross-directorate manner to ensure that LA services not only understand the issues but can help schools deliver the agenda with greater ease.

On board CCTV for Manchester school bus fleet The yellow school bus service in Greater Manchester is being equipped with TransVu Express DVR systems for incident management and in order to control anti-social behaviour.
“If there are any incidents on board the buses, video footage can be downloaded and examined.”
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) who was seeking to upgrade the on-board CCTV systems for its Yellow School Bus services has opted for the latest, state-of-the-art technology, from AD Mobile – part of AD Group in the form of the TransVu Express mobile DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Vehicles currently having the new systems installed are Irisbus Scolabuses which are procured by GMPTE and operated as part of its contracts with local operators.
In the case of the GMPTE project, the supplying dealer for the TransVu and TransVu Express is Millennium CCTV. Run by Managing Director Penny Chatburn who has been involved in static security monitoring systems, especially in the education and construction sectors, for over 30 years, Millennium’s move into mobile systems is a relatively new venture.
GMPTE’s Customised Services Officer, Gary Young, has responsibility for all of the organisation’s vehicles – in terms of specification, design, repair and maintenance. He said: “GMPTE started Yellow School Bus operations in 2003 and from the beginning CCTV formed an integral part of the package. The key benefit we get from CCTV is in controlling anti-social behaviour and incident management.
Penny Chatburn said: “GMPTE contacted me about supplying a more technically advanced system with improved reliability. Between 12-18 months ago we settled on AD Group as the system supplier. We particularly liked the fact that they were a UKheadquartered provider and, crucially, we had been a long term advocate of CCTV solutions from their subsidiaries - most notably Dedicated Micros.
“GMPTE operates a scheme where pupils, operators and the schools are all signed up to a code of conduct. As part of the scheme, vehicles have a dedicated driver and pupils are allocated passes and choose a specific seat on the bus. Vehicles are fully accessible and all-age seat belts are fitted for passenger safety.
“When it comes to CCTV on the move we are now working directly with a new arm of the company, called AD Mobile, which has been formed to deal with on-vehicle CCTV and other data collection and monitoring equipment. This includes the ability to gain driver and vehicle performance, CO2 emissions, fuel consumption and vehicle location.

“If there are any incidents on board the buses, video footage can be downloaded and examined. We have found the CCTV systems extremely helpful for clarifying disputes and influencing behaviour. “As part of the ongoing development of our Yellow School Bus scheme we are looking to adopt more modern CCTV systems using improved technology. In practice, we found physically downloading the recordings was fraught with problems – not least of these was having the vehicle in the right place when we needed to retrieve the data. The latest Wi-Fi systems are proving far more reliable and with automatic wireless downloading as the vehicle enters the depot, there is no effort required. “We are currently upgrading our existing CCTV systems because of the additional benefits of wireless download, improved reliability, and the opportunity to integrate with other on-bus systems that will give us more information on vehicle performance, driving standards and revenue protection.”

“GMPTE eventually settled on a six-camera system and the compact TransVu Express Digital Video and data recorder unit. They can be fitted with up to eight cameras if necessary, but we felt six was appropriate for this application. One looks forwards, another to rear, which also acts as a reversing camera, one monitors any ticketing transactions, one covers the entrance steps and the other two can see all passenger activity in the saloon.” The TransVu Express selected in this case has sufficient space to record digital data for up to one month’s normal operation. Looking at the installation process, Bill Flanagan from Walton Summit Truck Centre said: “We found the TransVu unit’s compact size a real bonus. It has also proved extremely rugged and reliable. “One of our problems has always been the size of some digital recording units and finding somewhere convenient to install them safely. We’ve worked very closely with Irisbus and bodybuilder Vehixel on this project and we’ve managed to get them on side. Under the present five-year contract with GMPTE, the company has installed TransVu systems on eight vehicles and there is potentially another 100 to do.
Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority has published details of its bid for Manchester to be chosen as Britain's first sustainable travel city. The transport body, which has the backing of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, is asking the government for ÂŁ29 million over three years to deliver a programme aimed at encouraging people to make smarter travel choices - helping to cut traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions and improve health. The bid includes proposals for region wide Personal Travel Planning, as well as a network of five flagship cycle centres in the regional centres, offering cycle parking facilities, showers and changing facilities, short-term bike hire, information and workshop and training points. The cycle centres would also promote sustainable travel and smarter driving advice. GMITA plans to offer one in five households 'personalised travel marketing' to help find the best way to travel and offer information and incentives to try different ways of getting around - such as car sharing, cycling, walking or public transport. This would be supported by creating a new website for Greater Manchester that would make information about sustainable travel choices easily available from a single source. In addition, the Sustainable City Travel money would be used to encourage smarter driving initiatives, promote car sharing and look at the feasibility of installing charging points for electric vehicles within the city centre. Cllr Keith Whitmore, chair of GMITA, said: "Our plans would make Greater Manchester a national leader in sustainable travel and, if successful, could lead to 13 million more journeys being made on the region's buses, trains and trams each year. Our bid seeks to

challenge people's perceptions of walking, cycling and public transport and show that they really are attractive and viable options - and to provide facilities like the cycle centres to address some of the barriers to making the switch." Nine large urban areas in England have been given the chance to obtain funding from the Department for Transport, which is expected to announce the successful bid in September. GMITA says its proposals provide benefits for all urban areas within the Greater Manchester city-region, concentrating on where the biggest environmental and health benefits are possible and making best use of the new Metrolink extensions and other public transport improvements that will be in place by 2012.
Voluntary Ofsted Registration A voluntary side now exists to the Ofsted Childcare Register which allows non statutory, self registration for participating organisations. Voluntary registration means parents will know that an organisation has met basic standards designed to safeguard children. It also means eligible parents will be able to get help with the costs of their childcare through Working Tax Credit and employer-supported childcare schemes. Local authorities offer support and training to registered providers and pass on their details to parents who are looking for childcare and schools using external organisations to provide an extended service are encouraged to work with registered providers. In order to register, the care must be provided for at least two hours a day or joined up to the beginning or end of the school day; or be part of an arrangement whereby care is provided for a continuous period of at least two hours (e.g. part of
extended schools activities or childcare). All staff with unsupervised access to children must undergo a check with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). Staff, premises, equipment and care provision must be safe and suitable. At least one staff member who is caring for children must have an appropriate first aid certificate, and one member of staff must have had appropriate training covering the common core skills. The registered provider must also have public liability insurance. Ofsted will select a proportion of providers for inspection at random, and there will always be an inspection following a complaint. After inspection, Ofsted will write to childcare providers to tell them if they have met the requirements for registration. To make an application, or for more information, contact Ofsted on 08456 404040 or visit www.ofsted.gov.uk.

A few small steps Wellfield Primary School, Sale, is a silver status Eco-School, and has recently joined forces with Action for Sustainable Living (AfSL) to gain extra support. AfSL’s innovative schools project, A Few Small Steps (AFSS), is launching across Greater Manchester and around the North West this autumn. Before becoming involved with AFSS, Wellfield Primary School had already been actively promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle. Children at the school had formed an “Eco-Warrior” club, to help sustainability in both the school and the surrounding area. The school already recycled paper, card and ink cartridges, emphasised the importance of turning off lights, and had a 20point plan to keep the school tidy and environmentally-friendly. The majority of this work was for the David Bellamy Award, in which the school were runners-up. With the prize money, they plan to create allotments and grow their own food. This will not be the first planting event that the school has hosted, as they have already had a Garden Day, where parents helped with planting around the school. As the school is next to Ashton Park, they work with the association Friends of Ashton Park, and children have planted bulbs and trees there. They also work with other Sale schools as part of Sale Area Council of Schools, and discuss environmental issues and ways to make a difference. Sarah Renshaw, the school’s eco co-ordinator, said that they had decided to get involved with AfSL to get some extra support: “It was recommended to us by a parent, and we looked into it and got some details. Our head teacher considered the information, and decided it was good to be more sustainable. We hope that AFSS will be able to support what we are doing already, and provide us with more support for the practical side of things. We’re hoping that their links with Trafford Council will help us, and give us the chance to integrate more.”
The AFSS programme, organised by Josh Steiner of AfSL, plans to build on the work that Wellfield is currently doing. It was trialled to great acclaim in several Greater Manchester schools last year, and provides a twelve-month support package helping staff and students to reduce energy consumption and waste, increase recycling rates and improve their school’s food culture. So far, the programme has been launched with staff INSET training, an assembly, lessons on global warming for years four and five, and work with the existing Eco-Warriors after-school club. The scheme helps schools to advance Every Child Matters, Healthy Schools, Eco-schools, Extended Services, School Travel Plans, Pupil & Parental Voice and more, in addition to saving money on bills and improving OFSTED reports. As well as coordinating the ‘Sustainability Mentoring’ programme, AFSS is leading on many other youth-oriented events over the coming months. These include school and community cooking workshops - with an award winning chef using local, seasonal and organic food; and peer eco-education and mural projects where teenagers from Manchester Youth Volunteering Project work with primary schools to develop art-based awareness campaigns. To find out more about how A Few Small Steps can work with your school, please contact Josh Steiner at schools@afsl.org.uk. Action for Sustainable Living supports individuals and their communities to make a difference. We believe that small steps lead to big changes.
The Forest Education Initiative Forest Schools originated in Europe in the early 20th century as a way of teaching about the natural world. By the 1980s it became part of the Danish early years programme. In 1993 a group of childcare students visiting Denmark witnessed the benefits of Forest School for themselves and brought the idea back to Bridgwater College. Here, lecturers that accompanied the students considered how they could apply what they had seen to the childcare provision in their own Early Years Excellence Centre. Since then the idea has grown and Forest Schools are spreading throughout Britain.

Forest Education Initiative (FEI) aims to increase the understanding and appreciation, particularly among young people, of the environmental, social, and economic potential of trees, woodlands and forests and of the link between the tree and everyday wood products. Woodlands provide environmentally sustainable building materials and many other products essential to daily life. Wood products require less energy to manufacture and maintain than other non-
renewable materials and they can be easily recycled. Woodlands benefit our environment and provide a great setting for education and recreation, as well as much-needed jobs in the rural economy. A new Forest Schools Cluster group has just been set up for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside. The group is called the 'North West FEI Cluster’ and is made up of support organizations and teachers/organizations providing Forest Schools: the Forestry Commission, Groundwork, Mersey Forest, Lancashire Wildlife Trust, 'The Forest School Initiative Lancashire’, Sefton Coast and Countryside Service, St Helen’s council, Bolton council and others. The North West FEI cluster group aims to promote forest schools in the region, provide contacts, support and advice to interested schools, obtain funding to enable teachers and others to go on Forest School practitioner training and to compile a database of relevant sites and providers.
