Radio-Active Learning School Radio Broadcast Solutions The Radio-Active Learning broadcasting system was launched in 2007 and is now the UK’s most popular ‘live’ primary school radio solution. It has been designed predominantly for primary school usage and its live broadcast capability has a proven impact on standards of communication, language and literacy. The system includes managed speaker distribution and pioneered the use of network cabling to distribute digital audio throughout school buildings. “The system has greatly improved our children’s communication skills especially public speaking skills which in the past have been quite poor. We strive constantly to boost pupils’ self-esteem, and appearing as a DJ on the system has really worked wonders.” R. Sumner, IT Co-ordinator, Parklands Primary School, Ellesmere Port
The system is expandable and highly affordable for primary school budgets. It utilises free Audacity recording software and 'hands-on' studio recording equipment as opposed to play-out software. Radio-Active Learning enables the recording and live transmission of pupil broadcasts across an internal school speaker network to classrooms, corridors and playgrounds.
Applications • The Radio-Active learning system can be used as an interdisciplinary ICT learning resource for cross-curricular activities and project work. The technology can provide differentiated curricula and learning experiences that help meet pupils’ needs and preferences. • The system can be used for tailored and responsive assessment of speaking, listening and responding skills; the key ICT application criteria of the PLF. • Radio systems provide engaging learning experiences for learners of all abilities, in all contexts, including pupils who are hard to reach. • The solution encourages parental engagement and strengthened relationships between families, schools and learners.
Benefits • Enables the creation of up-to-date audio media resources for sharing within VLEs, on school networks or the internet. • Develops digital learning materials for direct teaching or distribution. • Automated language assistance that can be used for language assessment. • BECTA Next Generation Learning technology. • Fun concept that engages, excites and motivates pupils and enlivens their communication and listening skills . • Enterprise in Education, Citizenship and Every Child Matters agenda. • Encourages parental engagement and develops school community. • Suitable for gifted and talented learners. • Package includes installation, training, support and maintenance.
22
With creative lesson planning the system can be used to enhance and develop lessons across the curriculum. Pupil broadcasts can be aired before school, at lunch-times, within after-school clubs or during the day in the form of listen-in learning exercises. Broadcasts may incorporate school news, stories, radio dramas interviews and more.

Hurricane Films Film Production Workshops Hurricane Films are a multi-award winning production company based in Liverpool who have worked extensively with young people on film projects in the Merseyside area. Past projects include the critically acclaimed feature film ‘Under the Mud’ - collaboratively written with a group of teenage first-time writers, mainly from South Liverpool.
“‘Under the Mud’...both accomplished social project and charming fairytale” Robert Epstein, The Independent “Hurricane Films’ Dead Drunk is a moving portrayal of friendship and family relationships as well as the devastating affect of alcohol abuse on people's lives. It will both inform and stimulate discussion amongst young people.” Sue Nott, Head of Education, CBBC
Using their experience on ‘Under The Mud’ as a case study for the workshop sessions, Hurricane offer educational programmes that allow children to tell their own stories through script writing and film-making, encouraging them to focus on conceiving an idea and developing the structure. The sessions also offer an insight into the entire production process and can be tailored to suit curriculum based objectives in English and Media across key stage 3 and 4. Hurricane have also worked on projects such as: Dovetails – a new writers initiative for the Everyman/ Playhouse and Channel Five. ‘Taste of LIPA’ - a summer school for LIPA, working with young people from disadvantaged areas, who wrote, acted in and shot their own short film. The Young Runaways project – a collaboration between the BBC and the National Carehome Association. The company have also worked with young people on a series of short films, including two with Kensington Fields Community Association – one ‘Little Angles’ which focused on dramatising the poetry of teenage first-time writers and dealt with the issues surrounding alcohol use and abuse. Hurricane Films firmly believe that young people’s self-esteem and confidence can be greatly enhanced through creativity – particularly when it is focused on them exploring their own lives and backgrounds - so they are encouraged to express themselves and call on their own life experiences. Seldom are young people given the chance to have their ‘voice’ heard. In their experience when they are allowed to express themselves artistically they challenge the negative stereo-types frequently associated with their generation. Most importantly, the creative workshops are enjoyable and entertaining - not only for the students but all the participating staff and practitioners too.

Steve McLean Urban Orienteering Steve McLean is at the forefront of orienteering development, using latest technology to introduce and deliver this adventure sport in an exciting and innovative way to people of all ages and abilities. His experience as part of British Orienteering's World Class Coaching team in addition to being an active competitor for many years is unrivalled and this is reflected in the quality of the work he provides.
A one-stop shop for all your orienteering needs, Steve can organise session delivery, mapping and equipment, staff training, support and guidance, tailored session plans and GCSE assessment. He can cater for disabled participants, family learning days, inter-schools festivals or events and much more. Thanks to the latest technology and a fresh and engaging approach, students and schools are being attracted to it in increasing numbers and as Lead Coach of the National Governing Body's Merseyside Participation Project there's also a natural exit route for those wanting to continue orienteering through weekly club nights. An active competitor since 1976, Steve was a part of the team that designed courses for the recent highly acclaimed British Sprint Championships and is utilising his expertise and passion for the sport to bring it to mainstream popularity. He has developed Orienteering for the Urban Environment which allows courses to be designed around any location even in school grounds and buildings. This has greatly increased the accessibility to the sport which has traditionally been set in forestry and countryside. So from school playgrounds to woodlands, parks to fells, Steve can design sessions to fully meet all challenges and needs. Another development has been the introduction of electronic timing and tagging which means teams require less supervision while on the course and results can be analysed easily at the end of the event. This flexibility has opened new avenues into the sport and school courses can be designed to suit any age group. Courses can incorporate elements of curriculum subjects with check points requiring answers to set questions or containing clues to the next check point location. Urban Orienteering develops teamwork, decision making, problem solving, numeracy, literacy and memory function as well as making exercise fun.
28
Each of these innovative developments is increasing the engagement level and appeal of the sport which maintains its competitive element and still contains plenty of old fashioned exercise. Competitions have been arranged for as few as 6 and as many as 420 competitors. Please call to discuss your requirements.

With Jungle Parc as part of your school activity curriculum you will guarantee your students an experience which incorporates a rewarding mix of mental and physical challenges. The course has a choice of ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’ routes to meet any students’ abilities. Children will enjoy themselves on the course and learn the discipline of their ‘life line system’ enabling them to accept responsibility and adopt basic safety rules that don’t normally exist in other sports. A Jungle Parc activity day incorporates a range of tasks that will develop balance, agility and mental and physical abilities. Jungle Parc allows children to attain new levels of confidence, self reliance and team awareness while experiencing an activity that is exciting, demanding and importantly, great fun. Another advantage of Jungle Parc over many other sporting or physical activities is its universal attraction among pupils. There is something about the unique nature of climbing among the tree canopy that is exciting and particularly alluring to children, whether sporty or academic and because courses are graded and non competitive, children of all abilities can enjoy and excel. Even children who normally opt out of sport or are afraid of heights will surprise themselves and everyone else by becoming the most enthusiastic once on the activity course.

Does your school have a prominent blank wall or free space, maybe an existing eyesore that could display a bright and colourful statement of your school's creative talents? A school mural will transform this eyesore into a celebration wall that will add a new dimension to the appearance of your school and provide a lasting focal point for your pupil's achievements, or school celebration.

School Mural Projects Murals by Design
School Mural Projects was founded by Will Coventry to design, create and coordinate the creation of bespoke celebration murals for schools. School Mural Projects can help to create a unique space that will reflect the ethos of your school. The finished mural may celebrate a school anniversary, an achievement, or could be a simple ‘art wall’ to showcase your pupils' talents. A mural project can take the form of an ‘enterprise day’, where pupils can produce a number of designs. Alternatively; a mural project can engage the whole school by involving all classes in an aspect of the design, as a possible inclusion in their art lessons. Maybe even a design competition. However you decide to proceed with your mural, Will Coventry will personally oversee and produce the final composite mural and he has the experience to deliver a wonderful, unique and lasting work of art for your school to be proud of. The murals can be painted directly onto your chosen wall or they can be painted onto primed boards and erected on a framework in the space provided. A mural is an innovative and rewarding way to involve your pupils in creating their own personal environment and helps to engender a genuine sense of attachment, ownership and pride in their school. Will Coventry is a commercial artist, graphic designer and a qualified teacher.

Fun Crew Graphic Stories and Cartoon Workshops Fun Crew deliver unique, exciting workshops incorporating cartoon-drawing and graphic storytelling. Children enjoy working with experienced, talented professionals whose work with CBBC, The Beano and Toxic comic they might have seen. Stuart is a reputed cartoon illustrator and Angela an illustrator and writer. She is the author of their 'Spooky Skaters' series for Scholastic which also runs in The Dandy and is being developed for animation.
Fun Crew's dynamic duo produce regular, ongoing comic strips and content for several national children's magazines, can be hired to add a vibrant twist to learning or leisure time. Their services support the visual and creative arts and have exciting potential to enhance diverse areas of learning. They are happy to discuss potential projects and can be adaptable and responsive to your project suggestions. As children become increasingly familiar with forms of graphica (comics, graphic novels) and cross-platform entertainment (animation, gaming, and online resources) then a graphic approach to understanding can be very engaging. For example, cartoons and comic-strips can be a compelling medium for literacy, history and PHSE education. (Think of the success of Horrible Histories!) Fun Crew have previously undertaken projects ranging from a commemorative mural for Rimrose Hope School celebrating the history of Seaforth and Litherland to an exploration of the cultural significance of Bolton's heraldry and an investigation of healthy eating issues for schools in Sefton. Fun Crew's workshops are innovative and inspiring. They spark interest and motivation and consistently produce immediate, impressive and confidence-boosting results. Sessions are suitable for individual class groups from age 5 upwards. Workshops can also be tailored to include parents and carers which has proven a popular option at many of their ‘open’ events. Fun Crew are available for 'Meet the Author/Illustrator' sessions related to World Book Day etc. and can arrange presentations to suit large groups (e.g. year groups or school assemblies). They can also be commissioned to produce bespoke artwork to enhance your schools' environment and can assist brainstorming or think-tank sessions with mindmapping or visual note-taking to record feedback or help to develop or evolve ideas.

Pottery painting is a creative way to cover curriculum topics for students of all ages and abilities. The Potting Shed is a friendly, modern ceramic studio - with seating for 42. It is an ideal location for a fun-filled learning opportunity outside the classroom.
“The Potting Shed recently worked with our Year 5 pupils making clay containers. Both sessions, one in school and the second at The Potting Shed studio were a huge success. The sessions were structured but flexible and the children enjoyed them immensely. The final results were fantastic. I look forward to working with them again!” Michelle

The opportunities for cross-curricular topics are endless but might include: • painting butterflies to improve understanding of symmetry • painting Mediterranean tiles to improve ruler skills • painting in the style of the Romans, Greeks or Egyptians as part of a history project • planning a design on a computer then transferring it to pottery as part of a technology project • ‘dotty’ Aboriginal style painting for an art project The finished ceramic pieces are professionally glazed and kilnfired for a fantastic result regardless of artistic ability. All items will be delivered back to school one week later. The studio is closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays to permit exclusive use for schools and other groups. Alternatively our highly-trained staff can visit you at your school on any day of the week. However, studio visits are preferable to access the full range of materials and tools available. We use top-quality bisque (the pottery) and underglazes to paint with. These are all completely safe, water-based and non-toxic. They also have the benefit of washing out of clothing very easily! All visits are tailor made to the teacher’s requirements and the needs of the group, we will always be as flexible as possible. A meeting with the teacher prior to any visit is essential to discuss desired outcomes as well as any specific needs or limitations within the group. Staff at The Potting Shed are used to working with people of all abilities and to finding flexible methods for assisting whilst still encouraging independent work. As well as a learning tool, pottery painting is good oldfashioned, safe, creative fun! A visit to The Potting Shed will always be a treat, so it is a popular choice for an end of term reward, a year 6 final visit, a Christmas treat to paint baubles or ornaments etc. If you’re not sure what painting pottery is all about, why not pop in and have a look around. Arty Pants Creative Art Workshops Arty Pants are passionate about art and promoting participation in art and crafts. Their mission is to make extra curricular art and craft activities easily accessible to all children and young people in Merseyside, regardless of ability and social background. They seek to achieve this by providing a mix of Holiday Clubs, After School Clubs, School Workshops, Consultation days, Community Art Work, Fun days and parties.
“Arty Pants were well organised and equipped and our staff were delighted at how smoothly everything went. The children were excited and enthusiastic and most important of all they were very pleased with their results. Excellent value for money - we could confidently leave the team to set up, run the class efficiently and clear away afterwards.” St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, Netherton
Arty Pants currently hold five after school art classes in various community settings across Merseyside. They engage up to fifteen children at each session, with a minimum of two experienced artists and teachers supervising. Each supervisor is a qualified first aider and has health and safety training, enhanced CRB checks, and NSPCC safeguarding children. They currently work in schools across Sefton, running art after school provision supported by extended schools. Arty Pants recently completed a Community Consultation project in conjunction with Extended Schools and St Phillips School, Litherland. Parents were consulted on local services and each produced pieces of work which were amalgamated to create a larger piece, currently on display in the school. In Sefton, Arty Pants target ‘hard to reach’ families, with the help of local Schools and this has resulted in additional children attending after school and holiday clubs. Wherever possible they source external funding to support activities enabling art to be inclusive to all children. Over the last 18 months, they have introduced new experiences to children and young people who attended Workshops, working with a range of materials from modroc to clay and have experimented with a variety of art techniques from screen printing to Aboriginal style painting. Arty Pants specialise in holiday clubs, after school clubs in schools and other community venues, pre school work in nurseries and children centres, projects with local youth clubs and school fun days and parties. They also carry out community consultation work, using art as a creative vehicle to capture pictorial notes.
40
Arty Pants provide all of the equipment and materials required for each project or workshop; asking the school to provide a suitable space, preferably with a wipe clean floor and easy access to a sink. They are looking to provide a long term solution to the shortage of extra curricular art and craft activities available to children. They hope to be able to build relationships with more schools and children while passing on skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for art.

JNF Digital School Art Projects Jackie Negus Fancey, founder of JNF Digital is a digital artist producing some unique and imaginative work with schools in the North West. She works to customise and transform your pupils’ classroom artwork or other images and incorporate photographs of the children within the finished product to facilitate the children becoming part of their own work of art.
On its simplest level this may involve working with artwork and photographs supplied by individuals or whole classes, to create single or group images remotely. Alternatively she can photograph the children herself as part of the project and assess the context and style of photograph required for each supplied image. This also involves the children in the creative process and produces more appropriate results in a completely personal and stylish manner. Artwork is produced on acrylic, canvas or wallpaper, and the end products can be used to decorate school hallways and provide lasting physical evidence of project work. JNF can also oversee bespoke projects where the artwork and photographs are produced in tandem to reflect a chosen theme. Artwork can be produced on an individual basis or arranged as a collage or montage reflecting the project in its entirety and presented to the school as a permanent display item. Schools can also use this unique service to memorialise an event or project that runs alongside the curriculum. Fairfield

Dominic Kelly Storytelling Performances and Workshops Dominic is a storyteller with a national reputation for performances in venues such as the Barbican, The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival and West End theatres. Your children can experience his narrative magic in school, and discover how to tell stories without scripts, enhancing their communication skills and providing a new creative outlet for self-expression.
“You managed to captivate everyone and all came away with nothing but praise.” Moulton School, Cheshire “The children were enthralled and listened spellbound. This led into some fantastic storyboard writing. We will certainly be making good use of the storytelling techniques in our literacy work.” Higham St John’s CE Primary, Lancashire
Dominic’s work in schools draws not only on his professional storytelling expertise but also on eight years as a qualified teacher in primary and secondary schools. He gives performances and workshops for all ages from Nursery to Sixth Form, based on his wide repertoire of folktales, myths, urban myths and legends from the British isles and round the world. His storytelling provides an imaginative springboard for learning across the curriculum, and helps to develop concentration and speaking and listening skills. For younger years he combines the wonder and humour of folktales and legends with infectious audience participation that involves the children in the telling. For older pupils he can perform full length performance pieces, alongside in-depth playful work on storytelling, including techniques to bring folktales into the 21st century! Programmes & Projects – In a day of performances Dominic can provide four sessions of up to an hour in length depending on the age of the group). He provides projects combining performances with progressive workshops: through individual, paired and group activities, Dominic shares the secrets of the professional storytelling process in enjoyable and accessible ways. He uses a wide range of oral, hands-on and visual techniques to help pupils develop their storytelling skills and narrative creativity. Projects can culminate in pupils performing stories to small audiences of other children (and even parents) in the school in a ‘Storyfair’ event, and larger performance opportunities for older children.

Dominic’s storytelling offers an invaluable resource to engage and entertain pupils and to stimulate imagination, interest and activity in a broad spectrum of curricular topics and the storytelling sessions and workshops can be tailored to suit your particular educational requirements. Martin Mere Wetland Centre Autumn Visits Martin Mere Wetland Centre is home to over 100 species of rare and endangered ducks, geese, swans, flamingos and beavers. Open all year round, it offers pupils of all ages hands-on learning experiences led by experienced Teacher Explainers, and a safe environment in which to explore the wealth of Lancashire's wildlife.
Inquisitive Hawaiian Geese will nibble grain from the hand whilst you tour the world's wetlands through the carefully planned pathways. In contrast, watch, from the comfort and choice of ten lookout hides, internationally important numbers of ducks, geese and swans gathering in winter to form spectacular feeding flocks on seasonally flooded wetlands which enjoy SSSI (Site of Scientific Interest)/SPA (Special Protection Area) and Ramsar status. Contrary to popular belief the season at Martin Mere doesn’t finish at the end of summer. The wonderful natural habitat is a hive of activity right through until October and November. Autumn is a particularly good time for a school field trip to Martin Mere. They have recently built four new dipping ponds, enclosed in a giant cage so the birds can’t get in and eat the pond creatures, that stay alive right up to the onset of winter! Another advantage of an Autumn visit is that with fewer school parties present they can give your group their undivided attention! They also run extremely successful programmes on habitats, food chains and webs, and adaptations, right through to November. Also in November, the geese and swans arrive from Iceland for the winter, and the whole place exudes a genuine buzz of excitement as they welcome back old friends with their new families among the famous Whooper swans. The migration programme ‘My Great Adventure’ includes a trip to the 75m long Swanlink Hide to watch a daily swan feed, plus games and science role-play activities. Autumn is a great time for field trips to Martin Mere as it gives you, the teacher, the chance to get to know your new class in a relaxed and natural environment. A room for lunch and support you while you are here is all provided, and you will find staff very friendly, positive, approachable and knowledgeable.

There are days available during our schools’ Living History fortnight, which runs from 23rd September to 3rd October inclusive. Schools can bring a maximum of 40 children and choose either Celts and Romans, or Vikings. Church Farm is a working organic farm in Wirral, specialising in school and group visits. How many children know how to grow a carrot? Why can’t sheep bite? Why do pigs like mud? At Church Farm, groups can learn all about how their food is grown. They can also meet the farm animals and find out more about them.
“Church Farm provided the children with an excellent, educational day, filled with interactive activities and lots of opportunities to see the ‘Soil to Stomach’ process. I would definitely visit again!” C. McWilliam, Teacher, King’s

Church Farm Organics Education Down On The Farm
Meadow Primary School, Southport
“I really enjoyed planting my own seeds, and can’t wait to see them grow.” Reece, Year 4, King’s Meadow Primary School
Church Farm was one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. This means the farm is recognised as a provider of safe, quality educational experiences for young people. “We’re not just a farm park - we’re a working organic farm,” says Jonny Bentley, education co-ordinator. “We grow vegetables and fruit to sell in our farm shop. It’s really important for children to understand where our food comes from, and how it’s grown. We take groups on a tractor ride up into the fields, and show them how we grow our carrots, potatoes, asparagus and more. Guests can even plant their own crops, then come back when they are ready, and harvest and take home their produce.” “We explain the plant life cycle from seed to harvest, show how we prepare the produce for sale, and also cover the importance of fruit and vegetables in a healthy diet. The children will also meet the farm animals including our cows, sheep, donkeys, alpacas, ponies, goats and pigs. Groups have the opportunity to help feed and look after the animals, collect eggs from the hen house, and stroke the guinea pigs and rabbits.” Church Farm has an indoor classroom and eating area that can be booked with any trip, and if your group needs to let off a bit of steam, there’s a play area with sandpits and go-karts too. Jonny says “We are happy to tailor your visit to your school’s specific learning requirements, so teachers can link it to their plans for the year. Young people can actually get involved in planting the vegetables and feeding the animals, it’s a fantastic, fun, hands-on way to learn.”

Wild Workshops Creative Classroom Creatures Wild Workshops is a venture started by a science subject leader with a passion for nature. Sessions bring local garden animals (and lots of equipment) into the classroom for a truly hands-on practical experience. These vibrant sessions boost pupils’ learning and encourage investigation with some spectacular audio-visual aids. Have you ever seen a 3 foot woodlouse or heard a mouse’s ultrasonic ‘squeak’?
“Fantastic! One of the best sessions I have ever seen in 34 years of teaching. The children were enthralled.” Marilyn Friend, Teacher, Legh Vale Primary, St. Helens
“The children loved it! They were given the confidence to interact with the animals. The sessions were excellent and differentiated from class to class. Children and teachers learned a lot!” June Amison, Key Stage 1 Co-ordinator, Ince Saint Mary’s Primary, Wigan
WildWorkshops focuses on the essence of science – finding out about our world. A Wild Workshops day is about stimulating children’s innate curiosity, not filling in worksheets or memorising facts. From Nursery to Year 8, children love discovering, first hand, the behaviours of everyday animals with unusual habits. Differentiated investigations can reinforce work on Habitats, Food chains, Plants or Adaptations and will usually involve snails, mice, woodlice, brine shrimp as well as other seasonal guests. Wild Workshops help children to understand the wildlife that lives all around them. Allowing the children to work in small groups with live animals, empowers them and they become motivated to develop their own investigative skills. Can a mouse learn the correct route through a maze? Why do some creatures look for light and some shy away? These sessions can be used to enhance any ‘natural world’ class topic such as: Similarities and differences among living things, Plants and animals in the local environment, Variation, Moving and growing, Habitats and Life cycles. A real must for Science week! Through careful liaison and consultation Wild Workshops can create the perfect day for your school and your timetable. They offer a flexible approach to workshops and can cater for all needs whether you require in-depth investigations, general nature sessions or taster sessions for each class.

Teach UK Learning and Fun Rolled Into One Teach UK is a professional initiative working in partnership with schools and education authorities to develop pupils’ natural talents. They focus on and promote student interests and create unrivalled opportunities to achieve in all areas of STEM, maths, history and literature. Their curriculum-based workshops provide an alternative way of teaching the school syllabus and are designed to provide maximum benefit by teaching in creative and fun ways. “I liked it all! I wish you could come back next week” Maria “This has been the best week ever” Cain “I liked all of it” Alex “I liked the news bulletin” Matt
Education workshops often incorporate drama, dance and music and are written in consultation with the National Curriculum and the activities used are designed to enable pupils to use their latent knowledge to educate themselves and each other while using their minds to ask questions and explore outcomes for themselves. This practical experience helps develop memory function, critical thinking and literacy and communication skills. Teachers can experience the activities along with the children or, alternatively, they can use the time to observe how the workshop is run so they can use the techniques themselves when they return to the classroom. The children are fully supervised and enjoy a combination of group learning and individual or small cluster exercises. This allows leaders to monitor individual pupil progress and help any children who may be struggling. It really is wonderful to see children generating creative ideas as a result of being taught Curriculum subjects in an innovative and exciting way. Examples of STEM workshops include: How the Body Works – This workshop aims to get the children to discover how the body works through movement. There will be different methods of exploration involved and will develop skills such as, trust, team building and confidence. George’s Marvelous Medicine – introduces the idea of using chemicals through a potion making activity. Children create imaginary potions and decide how they react and then look at actual chemicals and what happens when they are mixed together. The children use creative writing and movement to explore the topic further. Solids, Liquids and Gases – This workshop allows children to explore the composition of solids, liquids and gases; how they react to being heated or cooled, and what happens when a force acts on them. Discussion – All workshops end with a quick discussion/ question and answer session, to gauge if the workshop has sparked enthusiasm/inquisitiveness and also serves as a feedback and evaluation tool.

What was it like during World War II? How did it feel to be a British Citizen? What did people eat and wear? Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Museum answers these questions and more. It recreates the London Blitz with special effects highlighting the sights, the sounds, the artefacts, and even the dust, smoke and smell of an air raid at its height.

Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Experience
“Spot on for National curriculum for all age groups – quite amazing!” Dr. Anthony Freeman, Government, History Advisor
“I thought I was back in the war, it was unbelievable. All children should visit this nostalgic and moving experience to see what it was really like for the ordinary people during World War 2.” Dame Vera Lynn
The museum has an astonishing collection of evocative photographs and an enormous number of actual relics. Everything from toilet rolls and soap to an Anderson shelter, you can sit in and hear air raids overhead. There are shops displaying what was available for purchase during the war years and a feature devoted to Winston Churchill. The education packs available for primary schools include activity sheets intended to support National History Curriculum Key Stage 2 Core Study Unit 4 - Britain Since 1930. The particular emphasis is on the experience and impact of the Second World War in Britain and covers topics including: Sheltering in the Underground, Gas Masks, Anderson Shelters Rationing, Fighting Fires, Evacuation, and The Blackout. For secondary schools activity sheets are linked with the main themes of ‘Britain at War Experience’ and form part of the study programme for the History National Curriculum key stage 3, Core Study unit 5 - The era of the Second World War with particular emphasis on the experience and impact of war, and the home front in Britain. There are four titles: ‘Air Raid precautions’ ‘Andersons and the Underground’ ‘Women in Wartime’ and ‘The Blitz’. Each unit includes an introduction to the area of study and acts as a stimulus to further enquiry. The suggested activities are of varying levels of difficulty and may be used for individual work or group discussion. They invite pupils to develop their understanding of the Second World War, to think about the experiences that are recreated in the Supplement and to explore their own attitudes and reactions. The museum allows pupils to use a range of historical Artefacts, Documents, Posters, Printed Resources, Pictures and photographs, Film Music and Sound Recordings. Tasks have been designed with National Curriculum Attainment Targets in mind, but are not connected to specific targets or levels, as these will vary according to the age and ability of each group.

Holocaust Survivor Stories London Jewish Cultural Centre Eye witness testimony from Holocaust survivors is the most powerful tool in raising awareness of the dangers of prejudice and racism. London Jewish Cultural Centre’s survivor speakers’ programme enables thousands of school children each year to hear and learn from these compelling stories of human endurance and man’s capacity to ill-treat his fellow man.
“Students were unanimous in the verdict that this was the most important historical experience they had ever had.” Vandean School, Kent “Without the visit the Holocaust would just seem like another history topic. It gave a reality to the subject which it is impossible to convey through textbooks.” La Sainte Union School, London
“Your story touched me in so many ways that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Arnita Manandhar, Year 11, Preston Manor High School
In 1994 Holocaust studies became a compulsory part of the school curriculum. This led the Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department of the London Jewish Cultural Centre to formalise its visiting speaker programme, formerly run on an ad hoc basis. Over the past 17 years the programme has gone from strength to strength, reaching out to schools throughout the country. In 2008/9 alone, Holocaust survivors gave direct testimony to over 15,000 students. Some 60 Holocaust survivors, not all of whom are Jewish, act as school speakers for us. They have endured a range of Holocaust experiences – kindertransport, the ghettos, hidden children, false passports, slave labour, camps. All speakers are people with direct experience of the Holocaust. They have been helped in the presentation of their story and in dealing with questions from both pupils and teachers. The LJCC Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department makes all the arrangements. Supported by a marvellous team of volunteer drivers, the department liaises with the schools, and requests feedback from students and teachers. Speakers give their time voluntarily, but all their travel expenses are met. Some are able to talk more frequently than others; how often they talk, and where, is entirely at each individual’s discretion.

Mindful of the survivors increasing age and frailty, an LJCC Legacy initiative has been launched to enable future generations to keep these testimonies alive, using recorded survivor tapes, personal reminiscences, photos, maps and other memorabilia. Meanwhile, if you have not heard a survivor speak, try to do so. The impact of direct testimony cannot be overestimated.

Roman Tours Ltd illustrate the Roman invasion of Britain and the assimilation of British tribes into the empire 2,000 years ago. They achieve this through school visits and museum based workshops/field trips in Chester. During school visits a Roman soldier arrives in search of new recruits for the Roman army. Decorated in replica armour and equipment, he provides a unique insight to the past with an interactive presentation.

Roman Tours Ltd Experience the Roman Invasion
“We had our first ‘Gladiator Workshop’ for KS2. It was an amazing and exhilarating experience for the children. They were awestruck by the lanista, the gladiator, and the ferocious bear!” St Margaret Ward Primary School
Through curriculumrelevant role play, character acting, question/answer sessions and hotseating Roman Tours Ltd provide a unique and lively learning environment for all. The compelling format allows learners to question a ‘real’ Roman soldier and also experience the outfits, attitudes and way of life of our descendants for themselves. They are invited to adopt the role of a captured Briton or a Roman soldier; trained with shields and armour and participate in formation marching which illustrates the importance of communication, cooperation and effective team work. Further topics covered include the impact on British culture of the Roman occupation, Roman society, medicine, military training and sanitation, towns and roads. These visits are extremely informative and can be tailored to suit your teacher's lesson plans. If your school is planning a trip to Chester, Roman Tours can add a new dimension to your learning through their partnership with the Grosvenor Museum. Schools find a visit to the museum combined with a Roman soldier patrol is an ideal way to start the topic or reinforce topics that have been covered previously. Groups are met at the museum by a Roman soldier, again in full armour and brought to attention by the sergeant major who welcomes them to service in the legions. Pupils are then each given a set of armour to wear (lightweight plastic) and receive an insight into the life of a Roman soldier and the rigours he endured in the British climate. They swear an oath to the emperor before heading out on patrol to various Roman remains including Chester’s own amphitheatre.

Wirral Museums Heritage, History and Art Wirral Museums Service is part of the Cultural Services Division of Wirral’s Regeneration Department. Cultural Services is undergoing a period of reorganisation in 2009 so their offering may alter during the year. School groups are welcomed and encouraged and the Education Officer will coordinate your trips. Help may be available for your transport.
“It has been so helpful to watch and create art with the children rather than try to organise it and assess at the same time. The direct link with the exhibition made it a memorable and rewarding experience for all.” Helga Jones, Christchurch CE Primary
Birkenhead Priory – The Benedictine Monks first came to Wirral in about 1150 and the site includes the oldest standing building on Mersyside, which is still in use today as a chapel. The monks offered hospitality to travellers and established the first Mersey Ferry service to Liverpool. The site now includes museum displays and an education/performance/meeting space. An education pack on the Priory provides a full history and suggested work to do around the site, which remains an oasis of calm in an industrial setting, overshadowed as it is by the cranes of Cammell Laird. St Mary’s Tower is on the same site and is the remains of Birkenhead’s first parish church: climb the 101 steps for the best views of the River Mersey and Liverpool – on a clear day you can even see the Runcorn Bridge! Sessions have included: Old Masters/Young Poets – creative writing based on stories seen in paintings; An introduction to looking – an easy start to telling stories found in paintings. “Our aim is to provide easy access to affordable design and effective construction focusing on the visual aesthetics as well as function.” (Educational School Grounds)
What Gardens123 can offer to schools is varied and whole school holistic. • Concept Consultations £45 - design walk round with head teacher and/or school grounds coordinator • Whole School or Part Grounds Designs - full grounds overviews and focused re designed area • Consultation Package - pupils, parents, teaching, non teaching staff, local community • Design Displays - create a new interactive school entrance display • Construction Quotes - Contractors are CRB checked • Project Coordination - included in the construction quotation • Pupil Design, Construction or Planting Lessons - science, technology, maths, art, etc • Staff and Governor Inset Training - 'Effective Use of the Outdoor Space for Curriculum Teaching' During the consultation they will discuss what type of package you will require, your timescales, budget and fundraising schedule, levels of support as well as the ideas for your grounds. They can create natural seating, exercise stations, ponds, planting areas, rain or shaded areas, outdoor classrooms and play areas, all utilising natural features and natural materials to add new, exciting and rewarding dimensions to your school grounds. Gardens123 feel strongly about the environment and their business carbon footprint. They have therefore created an electronic design process and try to work locally so that they can either walk or bus to consultations. If however they do jump in the car for those longer journeys they try to offset these emissions within their planting schemes. Their website has also been produced as carbon neutral; they recycle all business waste, try to reuse existing garden features in new and exciting ways and try to use locally sourced or recycled materials in the construction process. It all requires a little more thought and planning during the design process but they love the challenge!

The Driving Academy.org.uk Driven by Success! Shockingly, one in four car drivers killed or seriously injured is under 25, yet just one in fifteen car drivers is in this age group. Road Safety workshops aimed at key stage 4 pupils can help stop the deaths by training young people in the dangers of speeding, drink and drugged driving, not wearing seat belts and being a passenger with a young driver.
The Driving Academy Team are well established, and have been training drivers for over seven years. Principal Trainer, Paul Grice has been qualified with the Driving Standards Agency for over seven years and is a Grade 5 Driving Instructor. Paul is a member of the Driving Instructors Association, is a DIA advanced driver and is qualified as a DSA Fleet Trainer. They specialise in ensuring young drivers are safe drivers. Free Road Safety Talks – The Driving Academy will come to your school and give a free talk to your key stage 4 pupils to get them thinking about driving safely: • Have an awareness of the consequences for young people involved in a road traffic collision • Encourage young people to consider the necessary skills and attitudes for safe driving • Discuss the behaviour and common attitudes of young people and the risks they face • Effective communication tactics, to empower young drivers to make safe choices • The key rules to being safe on roads including not speeding, not drinking or taking drugs, belting up and avoiding driver distractions, and not getting in with someone who might drive dangerously. Pre-17s Driving Course – Learning to drive is a big step, it is not only learning to control a car, it is taking responsibility as a road user, and thinking about the safety of others. A pre-17 driving experience gives young people an early understanding of road awareness and what their responsibilities will be behind the wheel. One of the benefits of the pre 17 driving experience is to give a young driver early tuition and understanding of the risks involved in driving. Once they have experienced driving for themselves, they will have a better understanding of car control, before they head out onto the roads to become learner drivers for real. For 11-16 year olds, we offer a taster session to simply experience what it is like to control a car, including some basic excercises such as a steering slalom and reversing. Great for birthdays and Christmas as a one off treat! A Driving Academy gift voucher is the answer. Learners – The Driving Academy have a great pass rate for Learner Drivers. They take geat pride at The Driving Academy, that they teach new drivers safe driving skills for life. Learning to drive offers so much new found freedom and independence and improved job prospects, however with it comes responsibility and The Driving Academy think learning thus should be fun!

Small Steps to Success Motivational Workshops Small Steps to Success believes that children can aspire to be anything they want to be in life with hard work, determination and above all true belief in their abilities. They provide quality workshops for children that will inspire and motivate them to develop a more positive attitude to life and learning, in a bid to make their lives and futures better. They teach children simple positive psychology techniques which they can use throughout their lives and our workshops help children understand the psychology of achievement. Katie Small set up Small Steps to Success to provide children with the inspiration, motivation and encouragement to achieve success in their lives. Research has shown that motivating children at an early age is the best way of having a long lasting effect on the rest of their lives. Schools are the best place to reach all children and help them to make their lives better and to take responsibility for their futures. Katie began her teaching career in a deprived area of Liverpool where she recognised the talent and potential many children have, regardless of their backgrounds. Her passion for positive thinking and teaching has been life long and she has studied the topic for many years. She couldn’t understand why motivational speaking only existed for adults and believed that it could also benefit children and that having more positive children in the world will have positive results for schools, teachers, parents and society.
• Motivating children to believe in themselves and their abilities. • Raise children's aspirations, hopes and dreams so they aim for more out of life. • Teaching children how the power of positive thinking can encourage success. • Building children's confidence and self-esteem. • Encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own lives.
Many children live in negative environments which are detrimental to their personal development. Negativity breeds negativity but the same works in reverse in that positivity breeds positivity so Small Steps works to make children more positive and to help them believe in a bright, happy and successful future for themselves. Small Steps works in conjunction with a number of Government Initiatives that seek to provide young people with a sense of purpose, personal resilience and emotional stability. They deliver six age specific workshops which are designed for schools but can also be delivered to any youth group or organisation. Year 6 Workshop (Primary) - Small Step, Giant Leap Helping children cope with the transition process, and working specifically to improve self esteem and confidence. Year 7 Workshop - First Class Helping children cope with their 1st year at high school, and working specifically to improve self esteem and confidence. Year 9 Workshop - Your Life, Your Choice, Your Future Choosing options, helping children make the right decisions. Year 11 Workshop - Recipe for Success Helping children prepare for their exams and to motivate them to achieve more than they thought possible. Year 12/13 Workshops - The World Is Your Oyster Encouraging young adults to see what the world has to offer them and to seize their opportunities. Anti-Bullying Workshop - No Victims, Just Survivors Based on a true story and giving children an insight into what it is like to be bullied and the effect this can have. Suitable for year 5 and above. Small Steps to Success's key aims include:

The Comedy Trust Stand Up Comedy Stand Out, the stand up comedy course for 14-18 year olds, is The Comedy Trust's flagship course and is run all year round in schools across the North West. Over 2000 young people have taken part in Stand Out, which has won approval from teachers and education professionals from across the country.
“Stand Out has offered students the opportunity to have fun and develop confidence and self-esteem – all within a supportive environment. Young people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds have shown remarkable progress by participating in these programmes. This is an excellent youth service and extended schools activity.” Stuart Smith, Exec. Director of Children's Services, Liverpool City Council
The course runs as a 7-week (2 hours) workshop programme, with a group of up to 20 pupils as an out of school activity or within the national curriculum. The course is delivered by professional comedians and creative practitioners and covers all aspects of writing and performing a piece of original stand up comedy. At the end of the 6 weeks, students perform their material to an audience of friends, family and teachers. In the seventh week the pupils take part in a fun evaluation and reflection session to enable them to evaluate themselves.
