The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We were looking for an international orientated IB school which would prepare our children for a future life as truly global citizens in a fast-evolving environment. When visiting the Open Day, we were all blown away by the friendly and knowledgeable staff as well as the outstanding facilities. It was very important for us to find an environment that inspires our kids and one that really brings out the best in each child. It is non-selective but the school constantly manages to equip children which could have slipped through the net in another system with a high calibre education. There are no square pegs and round holes at ACS. It is an embracing community where everyone has the opportunity to shine in his/her very own way. Open days: 25th and 26th September 2019.

As parents, we love: The staff are truly caring and supportive. Fellow students understand and warmly welcome different cultures. IB course choices and the school facilities are second to none. Our children love: The teachers. The group spirit/sense of belonging. The modern and global approach to education.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We chose Aldro because quite honestly there is no other school like it! We have twin boys who wear their hearts on their sleeves and we quickly realised they were going to be allowed to be themselves at Aldro. Tom and Harry are sport mad and so the standard of sport at Aldro was also a key factor. Teachers are very quick to notice when children are not feeling confident and are able to reassure them and get them back on track. Aldro parents are a really friendly bunch and I am making lifelong friends. There are some really popular parent events like the Quiz Night and Summer Party as well as family events. If you are looking for a school tailored for boys where boys are allowed to be boys then look no further!
As parents, we love: The beautiful surroundings and space that the boys have to develop. The homely feel within school. The approachable nature of both academic and pastoral care staff. Our children love: The delicious food! In particular the sticky toffee pudding. The Sports – Rugby, Football and Cricket. Chapel Choir.
HEADS UP
“To strive for academic excellence, seek to develop a love of learning for boys within a broad and contemporary curriculum that offers a wide range of opportunities for extra-curricular activities. Develop, coach, mentor and train a committed and highly motivated staff team.” Chris Carlier, Headmaster

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… All Hallows has become an extension of our family. We were looking for a school that would give our children a supportive learning environment and we have found so much more at All Hallows. Each of my children have been able to grow as individuals, explore and develop their own interests and hobbies in an enthusiastic, supportive environment. In all areas of their learning,my children have had dynamic, dedicated staff, encouraging them to explore, experiment and succeed. My children have developed confidence, independence, resilience and a hunger to learn. They have made life-long friendships and magical memories. It is clear to see that the school is full of happy children and staff.
As parents, we love: The breadth of learning and extra curricular activities available to all the children. The inspirational teachers that develop a love of learning in all the children. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We love that Aysgarth is an all boy environment where the boys have the freedom to be boys. The school offers a real sense of adventure, where the boys are encouraged to behave like children and be active in a good old-fashioned way. Aysgarth is set in beautiful grounds and has a sense of ‘place’. When you walk down the corridors the boys are like a boisterous, bounding pack of puppies - full of noise, excitement, life and energy. This encourages the boys to be hardy too, where they spend huge amounts of time outside playing sports and games in all weather conditions. The boys go onto a wide variety of schools including Eton and Harrow in the South to Merchiston Castle and Gordonstoun in the North, all as happy, confident all-rounders.
As parents, we love: The confidence and self-assurance it has given our son, without being arrogant. The boys are stretched academically by dedicated, passionate and caring teachers. We love the fact that a 1st team sports jumper is as coveted as the senior choir gown. Our children love: Fun and laughter with their peers in a strong boarding community - “a constant sleepover!” The broad range of activities from mountain biking to scuba diving and clay pigeon shooting. Opportunities, from the choir tour in France to the rugby tour in Oxford.
HEADS UP
“Aysgarth provides the opportunity for children to make the most of their potential and genuinely prepares them for public school and later life. We believe that happy boys learn more quickly and are much more likely to support each other and contribute to society.” Rob Morse, Headmaster

INSIDE SCOOP
Decisions, decisions… Choosing the right school can be daunting and probably one of your most important decisions as a parent. We ask education expert, Arabella Davies, to condense her 15 years of experience into some key pointers Start by browsing school websites. These are incredibly informative and can give you a real feel for the school. Think about what is important to you and your children. Consider carefully their individual interests and passions. Do you wish for your children to be day pupils or boarders? Also, what about the location of your chosen school? Don’t overload yourselves with too many school visits. You can always add to your list as time goes on. Although private tours can be more intimate, I feel you get a much bigger picture from an open day. Identifying energetic and passionate teachers is key. They can fire up imagination and make learning fun. Don’t be afraid to challenge the school on their selection process. What exactly is it that they look for in their prospective pupils? More often than not these assessments are in place to ensure that your child is the right fit. Ask questions to existing parents at your target schools. Don’t listen to those families who have no connection
to the schools you are interested in but seem to have rather a strong (often inaccurate) opinion. Ask them if they had one complaint about the school what would it be? It’s amazing what insight you will gain, from there aren’t enough spaces in the car park, to the Head is terrible! For day schools - I encourage if/when possible, a drive-past at drop-off and especially at pick-up, to see the types of children (and staff ) coming and going. More importantly observe how they behave and their appearance at the beginning and end of each day. For boarding schools - Look carefully at all the people responsible for your child day and night. If you are looking at full boarding, enquire as to how many children really do stay in at weekends as well as what activities they provide. Look to see if the children appear genuinely happy and don’t be afraid to ask your tour-guides plenty of questions including what they like the most or least about their school. Keep the admissions team on your side. Be organised and allow plenty of time for registration - they are much more willing to help if you stick to their deadlines!

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… I chose Bradfield as I had heard what a kind and well balanced school it was. The facilities are out of this world and always being improved. Bradfield itself feels safe, secure and is idyllic in its setting. I am about to send my fourth child to Bradfield and despite the fact they are all very different personalities, Bradfield seems to find and encourage the very best out of everyone – no small feat. Bradfield children have a quiet confidence about them and their social skills are as strong as their friendships. They are interesting young people who are perceived as fun, decent, engaging youngsters who mix well with pupils from other schools. When children are happy they flourish and achieve academically. Bradfield children are just that.
Our children love: The many friendships they have made. A close working relationship with all tutors and house mistresses, masters and teaching staff. The extensive variety of activities that are on offer.
HEADS UP “Bradfield offers an all-round education which is inclusive and diverse. There is one Bradfield but there are many Bradfieldians because the College is made up of young people whose individuality is nurtured and cherished.” Dr Christopher Stevens, Headmaster

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We chose Brambletye over other great schools for it’s special blend of traditional and contemporary values. From support to teaching staff, there are no weak links. Everyone is passionate, professional and top of their game. They really care about the school and it’s reputation but most of all they care about your child. Will and Amelia Brooks have not only fitted into this very special blend of qualities but have elevated every element, providing a clear focus and ‘care’ that is unique. Our son has emerged as a polite, confident, challenged (at the right level), curious, kind and engaging lad, all qualities that Brambletye have enhanced. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brambletye was the best prep school in the country. Seriously. How could you beat it?!
As parents, we love: The incredible buildings, location and grounds. The wonderfully supportive and nurturing team of teachers and support staff. The blend of traditional and contemporary values all brought together within a genuine sense of purpose and vision. Our children love: All the amazing friends I have. Everyone is so friendly and kind. The teachers are incredible! I also love all the things I get to do.
HEADS UP “Brambletye’s school rules are very simple - Work Hard, Play Hard and Be Kind these values apply to staff and pupils and underpin everything we do.” Will Brooks, Headmaster

A global education
We explore how Global Action’s approach to school trips is engaging young people in learning around global issues, building an empowered alumni of positive-thinking Global Citizens
W
hen Global Action founders Mark and Katharine Giffard-Lindsay returned to the UK from working for international aid organisations in the Himalayas, they soon realised they wanted their children to develop a global outlook. ‘Global Action was born out of a strong desire to do something that would have a longlasting positive impact on our children’s mindset and actions,’ explains Katharine. ‘All parents want their children to have a happy childhood, but not to grow up in a bubble. We want our children to be exposed to global issues, and appreciate the freedoms and choices many of us take for granted.’
“WE WANT OUR CHILDREN TO BE EXPOSED TO GLOBAL ISSUES, AND APPRECIATE THE FREEDOMS AND CHOICES MANY OF US TAKE FOR GRANTED.” Global Action takes school teams to fascinating places where they experience new cultures, and re-evaluate their place in the world. ‘Nepal, India, Costa Rica, Zanzibar, and Borneo offer so many global learning opportunities, we find they appeal across the curriculum – the Himalayas, tropical jungles or coral reefs? A focus on poverty reduction, conservation or social justice? Geneva is slightly different, in that it’s a city trip focussed on the work of UN agencies and international organisations. One of our students was inspired to study international law at Cambridge university after this trip.’ Because both directors have worked in international development, Global Action has access to people working in international and local NGOs (charities) who are keen to share their experiences. As Mark highlights, ‘The aim is to inspire the next generation to think critically, globally and make a difference through their Left: Meeting a Changuu Island giant tortoise; Zanzibar school mural. Right from top down: WWF Nepal; Godolphin girls visit Tibetan school, Srongtsen; Godolphin team clean water project; Nepalese school painting fun; basketball final score.
INSIDE SCOOP
CASE STUDY: NEPAL Niamh Reavill, Godolphin School What was your most memorable experience? The trip, as a whole, was full of many memories but my most memorable experience was being able to play a basketball game with the children at Tibetan School, Srongtsen. Although, as an all-girls team that had never played basketball before, we were rather poor, it was so much fun and ended up with our whole group on the court, whilst still managing to lose. Which organisation inspired you the most? I found the UK Department for International Development (DFID) most interesting to listen to due to the depth and interesting content they provided. All of the team were extremely passionate about what they do and gave us an insight into life in Nepal with global affairs. With Nepal being the second poorest country in Asia, with natural disasters such as the earthquake in 2015, DFID talked to
us about their schemes, such as infrastructure care and plans, helping to provide safer and more durable buildings to reduce the impact of natural disasters. What’s the most important thing you learnt? No matter what, we should always be grateful for what we have. On comparing Nepal to UK, there was a huge difference. The streets were narrow and dusty, with seas of people day and night, the people all work very hard and, in most cases, for very little money. The children in the school lived miles away from their parents with no internet or new clothes, just the bare basics and simple things in life. We were digging a hole to install a clean water system to reduce childhood diseases at the school, something we take for granted every day. If I could go back to Nepal, I would without a doubt. Our time there was absolutely eye opening and taught me so much.
Adam Reavill, Godolpin School, Head of CCF What were the highlights of the trip for you? Watching our students interact with the Nepali pupils at schools where we have been doing work. Despite the language barrier they have been brilliant communicating with a few words and hand signals. They have laughed together with the Nepali children and really enjoyed the interactive nature of the time spent in those schools. A close second has been spotting rhinos while riding an elephant into the steamy jungle at dawn - something to be remembered for ever.

CASE STUDY: GENEVA Arun Mistry, Rugby School
What inspired you to go on this Geneva trip? I decided to go on the Geneva Trip because at the time I was studying A-level politics, and found the idea of visiting Geneva, home of the WTO, WHO and European hub of the UN an exciting prospect. I went to help me perform better in my A-Levels and also to see in person where global environmental, political and economic forum takes place.

actions. But we want them to have fun too! They get to develop all those soft skills employers are looking for like teamwork, communication and problem solving, without realising they’re doing it. When you spend the morning with a women’s cooperative farming seaweed on a Zanzibari beach, or help rebuild a school destroyed in the Nepal earthquake, it gets you thinking differently. Also, it shows students how their actions, or local people’s projects, can make a real difference to improve quality of life. They come home with new ideas, as global citizens.’ That is global learning for positive change. If you’d like to know more, visit www.global-action.co.uk
14 schoolnotices.co.uk ★ 2019
What was your most memorable experience? I found the most memorable experience was visiting the international Red Cross museum. This is especially because I was able to experience the major challenges of today’s world, the defence of human dignity and reduction of natural risks. What’s the most important thing you learnt? This trip definitely influenced my plans after school and future career prospects. Before the trip, I had my aims set on working for a public body, like the civil service, where I could potentially have a positive impact on British society. But after seeing the work of IGO’s such as the UNHCR and its positive impact, I am now aiming for a career in global government.
Paul Teeton, Rugby School, Head of Politics and International Relations What were the highlights of the trip for you? A sobering visit to the UNHCR and a truly insightful lecture given by the staff of this wonderful organization provided us all with a fresh appreciation of the work so many UN personnel perform in some of the most challenging conflict zones in the world.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Buckswood truly believes and follows it’s ethos that every child has a talent that should be encouraged and nurtured. Traditional values are at the heart of the school and held strong whilst extra-curricular activities and possibilities are extensive. This ensures that the students are both capable and comfortable in the wider world environment once they move on. Our children have very different characteristics but both consistently say that they have felt that they could be themselves at school, without feeling they have to comply to a uniformity. Good pastoral support when it has been needed, has instilled selfbelief and confidence in the children. The schools internationalism ensures awareness of people’s differences and respect for those differences.
As parents, we love: Staff familiarity with our children, treating them as individuals and giving them the pastoral care and guidance that’s needed. Extra-curricular opportunities that enhance the children and prepare them for the future. The traditional values instilled in the children as they face the modern world. Our children love: The beautiful grounds. Their friends and interacting with students from different nationalities. The extra-curricular opportunities such as selfdefence, bag pipe lessons and Duke of Edinburgh.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… CLC ticked every box for us as an all girls’ school and we continue to be totally blown away by the school. Girls are independent thinkers and individuals; there is no ‘fixed look’ or mould which is so refreshing. The girls are encouraged to question and challenge the status quo, to think outside the box and above all be themselves. CLC encourages its girls to be the best at whatever interests them and the school instils an unashamed enthusiasm in them for whatever it is they enjoy. They are all united in their passion, focus and resilience. We love this individuality! The girls are happy which, in many ways, is all a parent can ask for!
As parents, we love: The individuality, capability and open mindedness of the girls. The team attitude amongst the girls when they all get together which is inclusive and powerful. That the girls have a lot of fun together. Our children love: My friends and classes where it’s OK to just be myself, natural and inquisitive with no pressure. Being part of the College Choir. As parents, we love: The outstanding community spirit of the school. Their approach to discipline and work ethic. How the school’s approach has shaped our daughter’s spirit and character. Our children love: Sports such as hockey, where the school has won the Welsh championship. Being a member of the chapel choir and singing in St Peter’s Cathedral, Rome. The extra-curricular music and the opportunity to play in the school orchestra.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We came to look around the school a few years ago and were most impressed by the school grounds and facilities. When it was time to make our decision, our most important consideration was the quality of academic teaching, which was clearly evident in consistently strong results. Most importantly, the students were happy and engaged. My son joined in year 3 and we have seen a significant change in his confidence. The school encourages independence and self-reliance from the beginning and we have seen the impact this has had on his personality. Freeman’s takes the time to guide students towards making positive choices, giving them the confidence to contribute in a world that can be both challenging and uncertain.
As parents, we love: The beautiful grounds and impressive facilities. The quality of academic teaching and energy invested into bringing out the best of each child. Consistently positive results and achievements. Our children love: Their teachers. The really tasty school lunch. Clubs and sports, particularly cricket in the summer term.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… There is a unique alchemy at Cottesmore, term by term, we have watched our children flourish, grow and unfurl. Within moments of meeting Tom Rogerson, we knew we were in exceptional hands, he ‘gets’ kids and quickly works out what they need. A passionate, have a go, safe and supportive family energy pervades and being part of Cottesmore is being part of this family for all of us, parents and pupils alike. Everyone from the kitchen team to the energetic, inspiring teachers, the secretaries and the sports teachers, motivation, care and kindness rule. Above all, there is an overwhelming desire to make it easy, get it right and let the child succeed.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Our daughter is really flourishing at Downe House. She was at a local primary school, so we were anxious about the transition but they have nurtured her from the moment she arrived this year. The boarding staff have been amazing and the communication with parents is excellent. Girls are encouraged to be open-minded, take risks and to have a go at everything! Downe House girls thrive in the classroom but also on the sports field, on stage and socially too. The attention to detail for every individual is remarkable and the pastoral care is unparalleled. It is such an inclusive school and we love the emphasis on mental fitness and wellbeing which leads girls to be the best that they can.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We choose Downside as my family has had a long history of being educated there. However what particularly stood out for us and why we decided to send our children was due to the sense of belonging and community that pervades the school. Irrespective of the academic or sporting ability of any pupil, Downside always gives its pupils a high level of confidence and self-security that will last them for the rest of their life. Staff show genuine interest and an understanding for all the children in their care. Also important is that they have all had, or still have, children of their own at the school which gives it a wonderfully warm family feel. Old Gregorians are extremely likeable, well-rounded and reliable.
As parents, we love: The Headmaster and senior management team. The setting of Downside Abbey is a magnificent landmark - the school was purpose built around it. The network, of OG’s and of current parents, all of whom work together with the school to make both the child and his/her family, be they parents or siblings, welcome and included. Elstree is surrounded by amazing grounds with fabulous facilities. They are academically ambitious for the boys, but still value the importance of ‘letting boys be boys’. The flexi boarding was also a real draw. My sons have become so much more confident since joining Elstree and more willing to try new things. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Farleigh is simply unique. Chosen for its Catholic ethos and after endles recommendations, we have been astounded by the school. Each child is seen as an individual, nurtured and encouraged at all times. The children have the most deep-set sense of right and wrong instilled in them from the moment they arrive, which creates kind, confident and happy children who seek to help others and find joy in the achievements of others. At the same time, they are quietly driven, with a whole array of areas at which to succeed from the obvious academic or sporting, through to drama and the arts, to more subtle things, such as courtesy or just always having a smile on their face.
As parents, we love: The pastoral care – it’s written all over their faces: these children are happy and that is of number one importance to a parent. Fr Simon’s unique position as a priest, husband and parent gives him a great understanding and makes him a fantastic listener and Headmaster. The music department is exceptional. The open air concert ‘Summer Soirée’ with picnics, playing and giggling between performances. Friends made at Farleigh are friends for life.

Wraparound pastoral care is at the heart of the charity
“Relationship” is the key word here. “The critical bit, which is why we have a very high retention rate – well over 90 per cent – is that we have a ‘whole child’ agenda,” explains Davenport. “We get to know the children, we build a relationship with the family, with a community group, the school, we link that all together. We then build the relationship going forward with an alumni programme.” Wraparound pastoral care, including holidays, is at the heart of what Royal SpringBoard does - and no pupil gets dropped after school, or if things don’t work out. “There are lots of complexities that might emerge from having someone from, say, Peckham start at Marlborough or Oundle or wherever. The schools, without exception, are fantastic; I’m an unapologetic advocate.” For the most part, fees are fully funded by the schools, with Royal SpringBoard making contributions where necessary. Matching school to child is key to Royal SpringBoard’s success, and Davenport plays an integral part in this, drawing on his experience as
a headmaster, housemaster and governor. There are no shortcuts, he says: “We get to know the child well, we interview them personally, we give them an academic assessment (not pass or fail) just to find the right level. We get a report from their schools, from their parents. We make sure we never recommend a school where they won’t academically thrive.” Given the ongoing backlash against private schools, one of the attractions of Royal SpringBoard, Davenport notes, “is that we are about boarding, so there’s no distinction between independent and state. There are living saints in all of these schools and it’s fantastic that we can collectively build a coherent theme.” Finding such a theme, to prove their benefit to the public and maintain their charitable status, is something that independent schools have been struggling with. They are, Davenport says, “slightly defensive about this, and right to be so as there are an enormous amount of interactions between independent schools and the local community, most
“…the children go back to their local communities and act as ambassadors. That’s what it’s all about. The most powerful way to influence change is if you see somebody you know influencing change.” Shining example, Yuriel Kpalobi

often through state schools. They undoubtedly need to work at building closer links with public policy issues, children on free school meals and Looked After Children. But also really drive forward the extraordinarily interesting things from a resource perspective and how can they be translated to the wider sector: the work they are doing on AI robotics; how can we make that a broader social engagement - that hinterland.” One of the many challenges facing boarding schools, believes Davenport, is “to show how they’re relevant in ten years’ time. There are all sorts of economic forces that are acting against that at the moment, teachers’ pensions and other difficulties. Fees are extremely high and whichever way you look at it, that can’t go on.” On the upside, there are many more international students today , which Davenport thinks is fantastic. “If everybody can leave school with a friend who lives overseas, that’s clearly got to be an important life enhancement.” And life enhancement is what Davenport is all about: “I won’t ever claim that Royal SpringBoard is changing the world but we are among a number of forces that are manifestly leaving the world a little bit better than it was, with the independent sector really wanting to make a difference.”

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Being a military family, constantly on the move every two-three years, we needed a boarding school that not only provided an outstanding curriculum, but a homely atmosphere and the very best pastoral care. With a boy and two girls we decided upon a co-ed school so our children would have shared memories and be together. Despite each child having very different personalities and interests, they have all flourished, remained grounded, and gone from strength to strength at FSM. Although a couple have now moved on to senior school they still speak glowingly of their time here. Ultimately FSM has done its job; created happy children who are ready for their lives to come.
As parents, we love: The work ethos that has been instilled within our children. Seeing how the teachers inspire our children, and are remembered years after. From a pastoral perspective it has gone from strength to strength. Our children love: The different activities that are on offer every single night. The food. The full English breakfasts and ice cream birthday cakes are legendary. Amazing friends who all muck in together. It really does feel like a home away from home.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… I loved the location of Gordonstoun, the chance for my children to grow up in a such a beautiful environment and so close to the sea was too much to resist! The range of activities in and out of school and in the local community is amazing. My daughters have benefitted from these and they have much more of a sense of what they are capable of now. They have competed in numerous different sports, they have taken the stage and they have both held positions of responsibility and all in a nurturing and good humoured environment. This has undoubtedly led to their successes in the classroom, which have been consistent. They do well because they understand that they can.
As parents, we love: The breadth of opportunities available to every student and the way that these experiences inform how they work in the classroom. The nurturing environment in which they live. The eclectic nature of the student body. Dynamic, diverse and international. Our children love: The co-ed system and their friends. The Saturday night socials which may be a dance, a trip to the cinema or even a barbecue at the beach. Being members of a boarding house and being part of a larger family of peers.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… From our very first tour to our son’s first day, our experience of Harrow has been one of seamless perfection and continues only to delight us at every turn. What we love most is how privileged our son feels to a be part of such an incredible institution. He has friends at the school who are talented at a range of different sports, academic subjects, music and drama. It is a wonderfully eclectic place with a hugely broad skillset between peers but one thing every boy in our house has, which clearly marks them out, is their kind and generous spirit. We chose Harrow because we felt the pastoral care was as strong as the education but this in particular has exceeded our expectations at every turn. We love the school and our son is absolutely thriving.
As parents, we love: The school has an extremely strong sense of social responsibility - it is a kind place. The Design & Technology department - our son’s eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw it! Shooting, fishing, skiing and sailing are some of the extra curricular sports the school does. brilliantly. There is never a dull moment. This is where Highfield and Brookham stood out for us; the children were clearly happy, outgoing and independent children who loved their school and wanted to share this love with us. The grounds are spectacular! The woods where forest school, camping, outdoor cinema and capture the flag are played are wonderful, as is the trim trail and extensive playing fields. Our youngest is in his final year and it is fair to say that we are all dreading our last day at school, as it has become such a huge part of our lives over the last seven years.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Hurtwood had been on our radar for some time. Alas we had to wait for sixth form to apply. We were looking for a school which could help our son indulge his creativity AND give him a fantastic academic base. Our son was underperforming and uninspired at GCSE and didn’t do very well. He went for an interview and we were all just blown away by the atmosphere. In just six months he’s gone from a knuckle dragging oaf to a young man who now WANTS to do well and they are truly supporting him. His confidence is rising daily, and we could not be happier. It seems that the secret is their weekly monitoring in all subjects, grades for effort and attainment and then an all-important follow up. It’s working!

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Kensington Park School is a truly special and relatively small school where every child genuinely knows every other child and teacher in a very personal way, creating a wonderful ‘family’. It boasts some of the country’s most experienced teachers and offers excellent cultural and sporting opportunities, all in the heart of London. Our child came from a large school where he would tend to hide at the back of the classroom and rarely contribute. Within weeks of joining KPS, he was actively participating, sharing his ideas and most impressive of all, coming home at the end of day with real enthusiasm about what he had learned at school. The difference is palpable, his confidence continues to grow and he is happy about school every day.
As parents, we love: The relationships the children build with their teachers and other students. The communication with parents through the parent portal is amazing. We feel truly involved. The neighbourhood feel of the school. It’s a joy to be able to walk to school. Our children love: Getting to know their teachers both in and out of the classroom. There’s a great atmosphere! The Inside Scoop from a current parent… I strongly believe that the school’s ethos both at senior and junior level has instilled confidence and resilience in the children. They have been encouraged to participate in a huge range of extra curricular activities both in and out of school time. This includes regular performances on stage to parents and others and builds confidence and self esteem. The beautiful outside space, the wonderful opportunities available both academically and extra-curricular, the sport, music and arts on offer and most importantly the way that Mr Seward and the teachers spoke so passionately about the school and what they do; this all shone through. It was clear very quickly at the open morning that their love of learning was contagious and our daughter was not only going to have a wonderful time at Kingham but also be given the opportunity to excel and be encouraged to be ‘intellectually curious’. To top it off, we were impressed by the academic results too.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We initially chose KS for our daughters, because of the energy and spirit that is apparent the second you walk through the doors. Magoo, the schools’ founder, has such a passion and vision for the children and the school. It combines all the things we were looking for - excellent academics, making sure the children have a genuine interest in the world, an appreciation for others, and a fun and safe environment to learn and grow. The school is very honest about what they are trying to achieve…it is not a 7+ school as they want the students to have the chance to flourish in all areas of development. This by no means makes it any less academically rigorous. The school produces eloquent, poised, curious and well-mannered students. Open days: Please contact the school.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We chose LWC based on our tour of the school, our interaction with the Headmaster and the thoughtful, professional way in which the Admissions Office communicated with us. The school has far exceeded all our expectations. The underlying ethos is one of inclusion and encouragement and the staff are dedicated and kind. My sons have thrived academically and are fulfilling their potential across the curriculum. The teachers’ dedication not only academically but pastorally is immense. The school nurtures the ‘whole person’, building confidence, self-reliance and social skills whilst ensuring that they fulfil their academic potential to support this. It is a testament to Lord Wandsworth College that both our very different boys have excelled in its environment. Open days: Please contact the college for information.

As parents, we love: That they nurture the ‘individual’, developing trust, independence and confidence in the students. High standards of behaviour and any issues are dealt with quickly, tactfully and practically. Communication is clear, meaningful and regular. Our children love: The teachers who help them exceed expectations. The school is kind, friendly and you can ‘have a go’ and get involved in a range of activities. The school recognises each individual for the contribution they make to the school.
HEADS UP
“A school with an inspirational charitable foundation, a passion for the individual and one which nurtures character and inner self-confidence. Pupils have a voice, alongside a desire to be curious, creative and gain an ever-developing sense of emotional intelligence. We also have a great deal of fun.” Adam Williams, Headmaster

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… There are many outstanding schools with amazing facilities and excellent academic results that we could have picked for our boys. Ludgrove checks all the usual boxes but it is unique in delivering that something extra – a real sense of pride and lifetime belonging to a school and a community that gives the students the confidence and conviction to excel at what they do with humility and integrity. Attending Ludgrove gives our children not just an amazing education, a memorable five years of childhood and making lifelong friends – it gives them an identity that unites old Ludgrovians, old and young.
SE
As parents, we love: The intimacy and closeness of all the boys across the year groups. The confidence they instil in each child to excel. The leadership, led by Simon Barber and his wife, Sophie – both passionate about Ludgrove through and through. Our children love: The opportunity to play lots of sports; the music and the acting. The friendships, with boys and the staff, in particular the way they all help and constantly support each other. The food, especially the waffles!

“Friendships are made for life – we aim to create an environment where the unique Ludgrove spirit allows boys to thrive in an atmosphere of high achievement, happiness, good manners and kindness.” Simon Barber, Headmaster

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Marlborough fosters a ‘whole’ approach to the child. The academic side of things is the most important aspect but it offers so much more besides. It is wonderful to see the burgeoning confidence that a busy place instills and the tense moments of parenting the teenager are largely dealt with in school – allowing time together to be happier and more meaningful. Our son doesn’t feel that he has to follow the crowd, has learnt to be organised, engages in pleasant conversation and has started to make strides academically (none of which come naturally to a 15 year old boy!) There is always a member of staff who will take a special interest in an individual and will promote and sponsor any endeavour. Open days: Please contact admissions.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We were struck immediately by Moulsford’s extraordinary location on the Thames but what impressed us most was the sense of a traditional yet modern education that the school combined. There was a natural, unforced politeness in the boys – doors held open without question, all standing when the Head came into the room, but all the technology was state of the art. The school is looking to the future without ignoring the lessons of the past. It has a nurturing ethos. My eldest son has gained a huge amount of confidence and gone from someone who was inclined to hide at the back of the classroom to someone who auditions for the lead parts in the plays and is up for trying anything.
As parents, we love: The excellent work/play balance, preparing them for senior schools without the added pressure. Older boys mix with young to help them make the move up into prep school. The very useful bus service and an incredible office staff make our lives as two working parents much simpler. Our children love: “The food” was the instant answer to this. The opportunities the school offers with after school activities and the residential trips. The outdoor pool in the summer term and kayaking and sailing on the river.

he uni ue ene ts of BRITISH boarding Fans of Harry Potter probably imagine life at British boarding schools as swirling gothic spires, with young wizards battling it out on broomsticks. Robin Fletcher, CEO of the Boarding Schools’ Association separates the fantasy from the reality
Hogwarts
Some of this picture is not a million miles from the truth (apart from the wizards, of course!), because there are many British boarding schools that look a bit like Hogwarts or have breath-taking ocean views. The operative word here is ‘many’ because there are more than 500 UK boarding schools, making it one of the largest boarding markets in the world. And with quantity comes choice, whether that’s by size or type of school or just location. There are 75,000 boarding students in the UK aged seven to 19. The smallest schools have just a handful of boarders while at the other end of the scale there are some with more than 1,000. Junior (or ‘prep’) boarding schools generally cater for those

up to the age of 11 or 13, senior schools from 11 or 13 to 18, and ‘sixth form’ boarding schools aged 16 to 18 or 19. Some schools are ‘all through’ catering for boarders from the age of seven right through to 18 or 19, while some are standalone, catering for more narrow age ranges. Many UK boarding schools today are co-educational, but there are still schools just for boys or girls, and some which are co-ed at junior or sixth form level, but single sex between 11 and 16 to allow students to study without distraction! The final piece of the jigsaw is location. There are UK boarding schools in the heart of London and in tiny villages. There are schools in seaside towns, in the wilds of Scotland, in Northern Ireland, Wales and in every county of England. Surrey alone, which is very close to London, has more than 30 boarding schools while Scotland has fewer than 20. Different schools suit different people. Some students love the busyness of city or town life, while others prefer the
slower pace and better views that come with studying in the rolling countryside. The unique educational experience provided by a British boarding school affords modern families with a topquality education and a flexible solution to family life. Academic achievements are fundamental in this fast-changing, global working world, but the ‘extras’ are what really make a boarding school experience count. The boarding culture fosters meaningful relationships with peers and house staff enabling pupils to gain independence and experience a breadth of opportunities. Each school will have its own specialism and cater for a variety of children but what all will have in common is their care for each individual child. At the heart of every boarding school is the philosophy to ensure that each child is happy, thrives and succeeds, whatever their interests or talents. Whether on the sports field, the concert hall or in the classroom you can be certain
“At the heart of every boarding school is the philosophy to ensure that each child is happy, thrives and succeeds, whatever their interests or talents.
“A sense of community and a busy life outside the classroom while facilitating contact with home helps a child to settle quickly and enjoy all that school life can offer.”
that all boarding schools seek to help all pupils achieve their full potential. The structured environment and extended school days offer pupils a wealth of valuable life experience, in turn enabling them to gain independence and be wellprepared for life beyond school. Parents may choose for their child to attend boarding school on a full, weekly or flexi-board basis, according to their family schedule. Visits, support at concerts, pitch-side and events are encouraged, as is communication via Skype, email and FaceTime. Boarding schools work hard to make the transition from home to school as smooth as possible. A sense of community and a busy life outside the classroom while facilitating contact with
home helps a child to settle quickly and enjoy all that school life can offer. Most pupils will report that ‘spending time with friends’ is the best part of attending a boarding school. Boarding will not suit every child or family - but for the right child, in the right school, it can offer an enriching life experience, preparing them for life beyond school. Learning to live with others with respect and tolerance and having the ability to resolve conflict when it occurs are key skills pupils will need when they enter the working world and experience the challenges of the 21st century. Often, the achievements, friendships and interests cultivated at boarding school last a lifetime. GL
The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Newton feels more representative of London than other prep schools. It’s progressive in its approach to education, with an ethos that supports the flourishing of each individual child; the facilities are simply amazing, the art work on display is the perfect illustration of how colourful, diverse and vibrant the whole school is, top to bottom. What a prospective parent may not know about the school is how diverse it is: the registrar told me there were now over 50 nationalities represented at Newton. Yet it doesn’t feel like an international school – there is that indefinable Britishness still, but just the modern London version. Sometimes I think London schools can lose the “precious childhood years” in their hothousing but not Newton.
As parents, we love: The teaching staff are exceptional, I was so impressed with how quickly they ‘got’ my children. Amazing facilities, relaxed environment, strong structures in place so that everyone get the right support (kids and parents!) The large size means there is a bit for everyone in terms of clubs. Our children love: The ‘All Weather’ pitch where we can play more freely with all of our friends. The school fair, it’s so much fun. Our teachers who are always so kind and help us with everything that we do.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… I chose Oakham School for my children primarily for the small class sizes and the family atmosphere. Oakham School’s two greatest strengths are its ethos and its staff. The school offers so many ways for children to develop as individuals beyond the classroom; it isn’t just an exams factory where getting an A* is the be all and end all. I have three children with very different personalities and interests but I am confident that Oakham will bring out the best in each of them. I think the staff are extremely caring and supportive of the children; the teachers do so much more than just teach their subject. As a result my children have developed the confidence to try new things and just ‘have a go’ which is so refreshing to witness as a parent.
As parents, we love: The many caring and supportive staff at all levels of the school. The hugely friendly House atmosphere gives us a real sense of community. The many diverse opportunities on offer the children are SO lucky! Our children love: The amazing school food, loved by all, obviously! All the friends that they have made in House and beyond. The opportunity to experience so many different things via the clubs and activities.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We chose Pangbourne because of its community and family feel and for the individual care that each child receives. It’s been brilliant for both our very different children: one started off shy and unsure of himself, he’s more of an introspective artist. The other is outgoing and sporty but with a short attention span. The teachers and systems at the College have been excellent at getting the best out of both boys, academically, socially and in terms of their emotional development. The College has a set of Flag Values and we feel like they really work hard to instill these in all students. They have taught our children to be resilient, kind, hardworking, socially confident young adults who care about others and the world around them.
As parents, we love: The individual attention is outstanding: staff know and try to bring out the best in each child. The community atmosphere. It’s like a family. The small size. This might be constricting in real life but in a school, with the kids still finding their feet, it’s a really supportive atmosphere. Our children love: The family atmosphere and boarding; they even say the food is pretty good! The lifelong friendships they are making and the good relationships with their teachers. That they can be themselves and the space for their own individual interests.

“Pangbourne is a place where the individual matters. We are committed to the personal development of our pupils in the fullest sense. They are encouraged to work hard towards academic success but just as important is the development of their characters” Thomas Garnier, Headmaster

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… There is a very unique atmosphere at Port Regis that you can only appreciate fully in person. It is a place so full of positivity, inspiration and excitement. The teachers are what stood out to me so clearly, they all, without exception (I’ve got four children there so have met many) are quite simply outstanding. They clearly see their roles as more than just a job, they give all their energy into what they do in a wholly positive way. As a result, the children flourish and achieve their full potential. What more could one want as a parent? I am aware this sounds too good to be true, but I mean every single word and have been a parent here for six years.
As parents, we love: The teaching is outstanding. Inspiring, positive, giving one’s best, are all the qualities they instil. The children glow – they’re supported and encouraged without being pushed, and are very well looked after. The atmosphere is outstanding. Everyone is there because they genuinely want to be. Our children love: Their days at school. They arrive happy and are always buzzing when I collect them. Their friends and the variety of lessons. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… There is something truly exceptional about QM – not just the beautiful environment, inspiring curriculum, skilled teaching staff who support the girls to reach their full academic potential or the way in which girls respect each other fostering a real sense of community. It’s not just the way that girls grow in confidence and emotional maturity, developing empathy for those around them. It’s more than that. It’s a family, a place filled with love and laughter, brimming with possibilities, where aspirations become realities; where my daughter is celebrated for who she is now and who she will become. Beautiful surroundings and first-class facilities only tell half the story, it’s the commitment to excellence and outstanding pastoral care that sets it apart.
As parents, we love: Staff that go above and beyond the call of duty to give your daughter the best possible experience. The unrivalled facilities for academics, sports, music and the arts. That every member of staff is accessible, warm and welcoming. The Head’s door is always open. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Rugby has a genuinely holistic approach with excellence across many different disciplines, producing students who are able yet humble. The school is celebrating its best academic results ever this year with 15 pupils recently accepted into Oxbridge. All pupils get a chance to shine - the diverse range of opportunity in sports, arts and drama offered is immense, and pupils are actively encouraged to participate across disciplines. The Arnold Foundation awards fully-funded places to bright but disadvantaged children who are fully part of the fabric of boarding school life. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We chose Shrewsbury because of the quality of education, opportunities and facilities it offered our daughter. Of particular note were the music and sports facilities and the attractive, roomy boarding houses. Shrewsbury is special because it seems to manage to get the very best out of its pupils without being a pressure cooker. There is expectation and great success including many Oxbridge and Russell Group entrants and national sporting awards. This success is built around hope and encouragement. Shrewsbury has helped shape our daughter into a young woman who is self-reliant, inquisitive and ambitious with strong organisational skills and a practical outlook. She loves her time at Shrewsbury and will be very sad to leave.
As parents, we love: Shrewsbury’s slightly quirky character revels in individuality both in its students and its staff ! Many schools talk about educating the whole child, Shrewsbury actually does this. We ADORE the music. Shrewsbury is blessed with a remarkable music department and inspirational director. We love the fact that it’s a mixed school and our son and daughter could be together plus it is set in an awesome city and isn’t too shiny! It was important to us that they could escape the school environment to grab a hot chocolate in Summertown during their busy week. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… St George’s, set in the grounds of Windsor Castle, is a very special school. After eleven years as parents, we believe that both our children have had an exceptional start – they have had the space, time and nurturing environment to mature into confident, caring and responsible children, with a healthy competitive spirit. They both got into their firstchoice senior school, both competed at a high level in a number of sports, both sang in the Chamber Choir and participated in numerous school productions. This is not a ‘hot house’ prep school, it is a true ‘allround’ school. Assemblies are held in St George’s Chapel and older children can flexi-board as much or as little as they wish. St George’s brilliantly prepares children to be responsible and happy adults. Open days: 4th October 2019.

As parents, we love: The confidence that the school instils in the children is incredible. The sport, music and extra-curricular activities. The dedicated and caring nature of the school. Our children love: Sports lessons and competitive matches against other schools. Good facilities and a local school meaning local friends that they can hang out with. Singing in the Queen’s chapel.

“With a unique heritage and music running through its heart, St George’s School Windsor Castle champions courage, curiosity, creativity and kindness. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… When choosing our next school, we were looking for one that educates girls holistically – encouraging academic achievement and excellence within a strongly nurturing environment. Our first visit to St Mary’s Calne gave us a clear sense of that, more so than any other school we have visited before or since…and our experience, with two (very different) daughters at the school, has proven that to be the case. Our girls arrived at St Mary’s as young girls and are turning into highly engaged, inspired, independent young women with a very clear sense of their place in the world and strong determination to play a full part in it. The amazing spirit that St Mary’s engenders allows this to happen.
As parents, we love: The flexibility to cater for very different children’s skills, abilities and talents. Support given academically, building independence and achieving their ambitions. The leadership of the school – sets the tone in pursuit of what one might call “excellence with compassion”. Our children love: The culture of the school. The horizontal boarding (i.e in year groups) throughout the school. The depth of friendships they are making.
HEADS UP
“St Mary’s Calne provides exceptional all-round education for girls in a warm and nurturing environment, coupled with outstanding pastoral care and an enviable extra-curricular programme, with over 60 clubs and activities to enjoy.” Dr Felicia Kirk, Headmistress

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Summer Fields finds the perfect blend of high academic standards at all times, with superb sporting facilities and coaching, leading to excellent sporting progress and healthy fit boys. The school is also unapologetically competitive in the attitude to sporting outcomes, which rubs off well on the boys. The pastoral care is simply excellent, whether on a general basis or on a more individually tailored level we really feel the care and attention the school gives each child is first rate. The culture in the school is unrivalled, and this positive and progressive culture runs through the Head, the staff and on to the pupils themselves, and this has given our son the perfect start in his schooling life.
As parents, we love: The level of care and attention given to our son is outstanding. The warm and comforting nature of all the boarding staff is so strong that we are never concerned when leaving our son at school. The overall facilities are simply outstanding. Our children love: The community spirit within the day boys, boarders and staff is fun and exciting. The work/activities balance makes school life great fun and really challenging at the same time. The sports facilities and teams are awesome and we love winning and having fun afterwards.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… Without doubt, the staff at Talbot Heath offer excellent tuition. In addition to this, the school has truly amazing facilities to allow for a very diverse range of interests – the danger is that this could result in very spoilt girls! Instead, there is a deep sense of each girl needing to take personal responsibility and to make the most of what is on offer to them. What we were told when first shown around has been borne out to be totally true in practice: the staff facilitate the girls’ learning journey, every step of the way. Of the many events that the school put on, The Linguists Dinner is a fabulous advert for this.

As parents, we love: The incredible ‘can do’ ethos, it really is ‘cool to like school’. Effort and achievement are highly celebrated in all forms, from academic to sporting to music and drama. Positive interaction between school, girls and parents creates a real feeling of working together. Our children love: The amazing banquet served daily for lunch. Friends - I have a lovely group of close Friends, but all my class are nice! Fun - actively engaged in learning, acting, and sports matches with lively staff.

The Inside Scoop from a current parent… I have two children currently at The Leys and have another two hoping to join soon. We chose it for a number of reasons but mainly because it just felt right! That might sound crazy but there is an almost tangible feeling of a tremendously happy and vibrant school from the moment you first walk through the gates. There really is a lovely feeling that the children have an extended family, which, as a parent, is fantastically reassuring. The Leys is situated in the historic university city of Cambridge and takes full advantage of it’s unique location. In 2018 the school launched its Cam Ex (Cambridge Experience) initiative, highlighting the individual advantages of its links with the university, be they opportunities for academic, sporting or cultural enrichment.
As parents, we love: The way the children are made to feel part of the school from day one. The independent thinking and resilience they have gained, particularly through boarding. The interaction between pupils and teachers; they really seem to get along. Our children love: The close friendships they have made. The amazing opportunities – nearly 150 clubs and societies they can join! The way the staff and pupils mix. They can join bands together and perform in public; my kids LOVE that.

True of many of the students, my son is developing into a well-rounded, grounded young adult. The students are polite, humble, and passionate about their school and at ease chatting to adults. All of the teachers are warm, friendly and experienced and we were hugely impressed by the beautiful expansive grounds and pitches. My kids are fully encouraged and involved in everything from art exhibitions to the Year 6 and 7 musical to the many sports matches. Kindness, one of the school’s core values, is seen in pretty much all areas of the school’s day to day life. The parent community is very friendly, inclusive and local. On top of all this, the second-hand shop is absolutely brilliant – a genuine one stop shop!
As parents, we love: The matrons and pastoral care: always there for the children (and the parents too!) The food. Fresh, great choice and delicious. My cooking is never as good as theirs! The visit sealed the deal – it felt right on every level. Not pushy academically (but they get the results) and lots of smiling children. The children showed us around and it was all very relaxed. My child is thriving there. He was at a London school and it was very competitive. His confidence has really grown and with that, so has his academic knowledge. He plays a lot of sport and is a real team player – there’s a lot of camaraderie. They don’t have a uniform which makes for a different feel. The Inside Scoop from a current parent… We chose Woodbridge as we liked the idea of the children staying at one school for their entire education, but the different sites meant it would not feel like they had spent too long in one place. It was like separate schools but without losing friendships and continuity. Woodbridge has taught my children to be mature, self-reliant and have the ability to think laterally. They are confident but not arrogant. They engage in adult conversations and know the importance of looking smart when required. Woodbridge is good for both the academic and not so academic children. My daughter has received learning support since Year 2. She has excelled in the areas that come easiest to her while still achieving good GCSE results.
As parents, we love: Learning support to help our children reach their full potential without compromise Friendly, encouraging teachers and the sense of community. It’s the LITTLE things
With his new book, Adolescence: How to Survive It, in the offing, former Eton head Tony Little tells Susannah Warren why it’s vital to keep talking to your teenager, how to choose a school and what he’s learnt in the job
T
he teenage years have never been easy, but with so much unchartered territory to navigate, the experience is more complex today than ever before. “The human condition is constant,” says Tony Little, former headmaster of Eton and co-author of Adolescence: How to Survive It. “What has changed is the electronic world of the screen. That’s a game changer in terms of how adolescents can behave and indeed in terms of relationships. It’s one of the difficult areas of life that we are yet fully to understand and resolve.” Eager to put his 40 years’ practical experience in
the context of the knowledge of a real expert, Little collaborated on the book with Herb Etkin, one of the UK’s leading authorities on child and adolescent psychology. Through a series of Q&A dialogues, the pair tackle the key problems facing today’s young adults and set out practical ways to combat them. The most important thing parents can do for their adolescent children, Little says, is “to listen and to talk”. “It sounds so simple as to beggar belief… but actually in the adolescent years it often becomes very difficult. When things have a tendency to go awry is when the lines of communication aren’t clearly open, they clam up or their experience becomes

secretive, part of another world.” As parents we simply need to keep the conversation going, about anything and everything. But it can be quite taxing, admits Little: “It’s worth thinking about the situations when you can engineer a conversation.” One of the best places, he suggests, is “when it’s just the two of you in a car”. A chapter in the book called Screenagers looks at how to deal with young people’s online habits. The crucial point here, the pair agree, is to not allow this world to become furtive. “We both continue to be amazed about how little parents know - or choose to know - about what their children are doing online. You can never know entirely, nor would you wish to, you don’t want to run a police state, but it staggers me that I come across parents who are extraordinarily laissez-faire and have no idea at all, no idea, what their children are doing.” Understanding nuance is, Little believes, one of the great skills in which all young people should be educated: “It’s more relevant than ever before in the era of fake news. Triangulating information, not taking at face value what you see.” It’s so important, in fact, that if he were a parent
choosing a school today, he’d want to know a school’s approach to developing pupils’ critical skills. “I don’t mean as a bolt-on module, I mean right the way through the whole curriculum. To try to make sure that my child is going to have a lively critical sense and healthy scepticism.” What else does Little think should parents be looking out for? “You look at inspection reports and results, that’s a given, but to me far more important is being in a school, experiencing it and noticing the behaviour you see around you. Maybe it’s because I’m so long in the tooth and I’ve seen many schools, but in a matter of minutes I can get a pretty accurate sense of the ethos of the school. You can do it by walking down a corridor between lessons. How are people behaving with each other? Eye contact; how do young people relate to adults? How are young people addressed? You pick this up intuitively (in short order). As for the single sex and co-ed debate, Little isn’t a particular advocate either way. “If I go back 20 years, there was kind of a binary response to the issue, as if co-ed by definition is good and single sex is bad, and I think the world has moved on from that as both have their place; depending on the child and
“IT’S WORTH THINKING ABOUT THE SITUATIONS WHEN YOU CAN ENGINEER A CONVERSATION”
TON Y’ S TR IO A school he admires: “A chain of schools in Africa, where the average annual fee is US$200. One of the best lessons I’ve seen in a long time was a young woman teaching eightyear-olds some sophisticated concepts around number entirely through song. She had a beautiful voice, the children did movements, they were singing and they were learning.”
A charity he believes in: “Afghan Connection, set up by GP Dr Sarah Fane after touring Afghanistan offering medical help to women. It is doing some remarkable things. Firstly, helping local people build schools in villages that have never had a school. That’s a big cultural change, when men want to physically build a school for their daughters.”
A motto he could live by: “The first school I was head at, Chigwell School, had a Latin motto that roughly translated as: either find a way or make it. I like the balance of that. I interpret that as meaning you connect with something that already exists or if it isn’t there, you make it. It’s a good kind of 21st-century entrepreneurial approach.”

circumstance. The vast majority of children won’t be affected either way.” The interaction between the state and independent sector has changed dramatically too, according to Little: “For example, when I started [as a head] in 1989, one of the first letters I received was from the headmaster of the comprehensive school down the road. His opening line was words to the effect: ‘I’d like to let you know that you will not be welcome on our school site at any time.’ That’s what it was like. Them and us.” “If I fast forward 26 years, towards the end of my time at Eton, we had a huge number of positive, friendly contacts with state schools. We helped set up two free schools. So schools like Eton are doing a great deal in terms of collaborative relationships. To me [this] is the future as all the evidence shows that schooling systems are at their best when they are collaborative.” Indeed, collaboration is one of three invaluable lessons that Little says he has taken away from his decades as a headmaster. “The best heads I’ve known have clearly been identified as the leader but they’ve
also talked, listened, sought the common view.” Another is to stay level-headed as a head at all times because “in the maelstrom and intensity of relationships in a school community things can appear to be one thing, but with a little delving it’s not that way at all”. And the last is to trust people. “Almost always when I look back and things have gone wrong it’s been down to a lack of trust, manifest in different ways,” he explains. “You can only run a boarding school with 1,300 teenage males in the year 2019 if the teenagers want to be there and trust you. If they don’t, it’s not going to happen. Same in any school. You have to have trust. And be prepared to be let down. One of the functions of dealing with adolescents is being let down. Once you understand that, you understand adolescence better.” Adolescence: How to Survive It, £16.99 (Hardback) is available from 27th June at bloomsbury.com
