TACKLING teeth Tips for preventing sports injuries to teeth in association with Metamorphosis Orthodontics There are numerous benefits for children in playing sport
– physical fitness, positive selfesteem and teamwork to name just a few. However, at all levels of competition, there is always the risk of injury, from bumps and bruises to broken bones and dental emergencies. Injuries to the mouth can often get overlooked however losing a tooth or damaging the gums can be a real cause for concern. Contact sports such as football, rugby, lacrosse and hockey which all involve objects travelling at high speed are particularly hazardous. If a stick, ball, or boot makes an impact at just the right (or wrong!) spot against the gum line, then there is a high risk of mouth or tooth damage.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD IN SPORT It may seem obvious, but many accidents can be prevented or at least significantly reduced, if children are wearing the correct type of protection. Helmets are commonplace in cricket and

ice hockey making it extremely difficult for any oral trauma to occur. However, it is the mouth guard that is your best (and last) overall line of defence in protecting the teeth and tongue. You can purchase the standard boil-and-bite mouth guards at any good sports shop, however, these don’t always provide sufficient cushioning. For this we would always recommend a custom-made mouth guard to ensure all the right areas within the mouth are protected. Losing a tooth is an expensive ordeal costing around 20 times more than the cost of
a customfitted mouth guard. So an appointment with a professional orthodontist has to be money well spent!

SOLO SPORTS

It is not just contact sports
that pose a risk to children’s teeth, mouths and heads. It’s just as important that they are protected when taking part in solo sports such as riding, bicycling, skiing and skating so always get them to wear an

appropriate helmet! A mouth guard is also a good idea, as a helmet alone won’t shield their teeth. Getting your child into the habit of regularly wearing their mouth guard is good practise and the best way of preventing future dental injury.

THE DO’S AND DON’TS of chipping or losing a tooth: A tooth that has been knocked out of its socket can be successfully replanted and last for years. Knowing what to do and taking quick action as a parent will increase the likelihood of saving the tooth:

✔ DO pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface) not the root. The tooth should be handled carefully and if dirty the tooth should be gently rinsed with water. ✔ DO reposition the tooth in the socket immediately; the sooner the tooth is replaced the greater the likelihood that it will survive. Carefully push the tooth in the socket with your fingers and gently bite down on it.

✔ DO keep the tooth moist at all times. The tooth must not be left outside the mouth to dry.

✔ DO place the tooth (or chipped piece) in milk or in the mouth next to cheek. ✔ DO go to see your dentist immediately Metamorphosis is offering SN Members a free Consultation and 10% off on full upper and lower fixed comprehensive Damon braces with the UK’s leading expert, Dr Neil Counihan (Tatler’s 2017 top recommended Orthodontic specialist). (or emergency dentist if out of hours). Professional advice and treatment as soon as possible after trauma will increase the chance of the long term survival of the tooth.

✘ DON’T use soap or chemicals to wash the tooth. ✘ DON’T wrap the tooth in tissue. ✘ DON’T ignore a small chip – always seek professional advice. Some teeth can lose their blood and nerve supply and turn grey and may require root canal treatment.

I don’t know how she does it! A woman of many talents, Clare Balding tells Susannah Warren about her crazy broadcasting schedule, her new novel for children and why she is passionate about promoting women’s sport

INTERVIEW

C

lare Balding is just as you would expect her to be: warm, articulate, intelligent, inspiring. Most reassuring, though, is how down to earth the broadcaster and best-selling author remains despite the accolades that have been heaped upon her: OBE, BAFTA Special Award, Royal Television Society’s Presenter of the Year Award, Racing Journalist of the Year, to name but a few. “I don’t need freshly born kittens and lilies. I don’t even need a dressing room. I go and change in the loo if needs be.” It is this lack of entitlement, along with her unerring professionalism, that has won over the hearts of pretty much the entire nation and made her the go-to presenter for so many of the sporting calendar’s biggest events. When we meet she has just finished fronting Crufts, is in the middle of filming a Channel 4 documentary, When Football Banned Women, which tells the story of the globally feted Dick Kerr ladies and explains how the 50-year ban (1921-1971) came about. Then she’s onto the Boat Race, the America’s Cup (“something totally new for me to learn”), Wimbledon, swiftly followed by the European Women’s Football Championships in Holland, which she is also presenting for the first time. In amongst all this, she has her ongoing Radio 4 series, Ramblings, and is also in the throes of writing her second novel for children, a sequel to her hugely popular witty debut, The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop. Due out in October, it has, she tips us off, a “certain Shergar theme to it”.

It’s exhausting just thinking about her schedule. And that’s not all of her commitments by any means, so just imagine when it’s an Olympic year. How on earth does she do it? “There’s a lot of other stuff that I don’t do. My sister-in-law will rustle up dinner for 20 people without blinking – that would give me a heart attack. I don’t have kids. Alice [Arnold, her wife] plans our holidays. I’m pretty focused on what I do.” Focused, or a workaholic, perhaps? “Yes, it is a danger, ” she admits. “But I recognise it and pull back from it.” The buzz of live coverage is hard to pass up, she admits: “I do love the energy and performance of live TV and radio, bringing a sporting event to life… trying to make people care about a race they’ve never watched before and they don’t know who half the swimmers, cyclists or whoever are.” As the daughter of former racehorse trainer Ian Balding, sport was in her blood. “The whole family was into it and it was on TV all the time.” She did endless competitive riding in the holidays and played a lot of lacrosse at Downe House, where she was head girl. Sport is, she insists, hugely important to schoolchildren’s confidence. “When you’re really struggling and feeling that you’re failing at something, it’s really good for showing you how to pick yourself up – not just how to succeed, but how to work in a team, how to react when someone else wins, how to get fit, to recover.” It is also, she says, a valuable reminder that life’s “not all about being size zero and stick thin”. It’s a theme she deals with in The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop, which tells the heartwarming story of a horse-mad 10-year-old girl, Charlie Bass, who has big thighs and even bigger dreams. ››

INTERVIEW

Although her school days are long behind her, Clare still remembers “the terror of changing into mufti at weekends”, and has some very sound advice for her younger self that schoolgirls would do well to heed: “Think less about what other people think and more about who you want to be. If you were going to describe yourself in adjectives, what would you want to be described as? Do you want to be kind? Do you want to be thoughtful? Energetic? Generous, ambitious, competitive? Don’t think: ‘I want to have long straight hair and all the latest clothes.’ That is not who you are and that is not how you will be remembered.” It is comments such as these that explain why Clare has become one of today’s most influential female role models. She is constantly flying the flag for women in sport and beyond, and has big aspirations. “In 10 years’ time I would like to open the sports pages of any newspaper and for it to be genuinely balanced.” She believes women’s football holds the key and is hugely excited to start covering it. “Football is the biggie because so many people do it. It is going to reach a tipping point very soon where interest multiplies exponentially.” She is hopeful that it could go on the kind of journey that the Paralympics went on under her watch. “The more people that know about it, the more stories we can tell, the more familiar we can get people with the players, the more people will enjoy it and be interested.” And who better than Clare Balding to make that a reality?

The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop is out now in paperback, (£6.99 Puffin Books) available in stores or online.

Walk this way

Getting children to go for a walk can be like pulling teeth. Luckily, with 17 years’ worth of Ramblings around the countryside under her belt for her Radio 4 series, Clare has some great tips to keep everyone moving in the right direction: ★ Do things in chunks, like the Cotswold Way or the Thames Path: “It might be five miles the first time, then next weekend you do the next five. They love being able to say, ‘We’ve done all that.’” ★ Do a well-known walk and research landmarks beforehand: “For example, you’ve got all those castles on the North East Coastal path. Get them to find out five facts about each. That’s really fun.” ★ Focus on bird and tree identification: “Children love trees. I do a bit of help with the Woodland Trust and getting kids feeling responsible for trees, recognising different types, knowing what’s evergreen, what’s not, what comes out early, what doesn’t, is great.”

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

3-2-1 Action!

If live broadcasting is on your child’s career radar, then there’s no time like the present, according to Clare. “These days, there’s so much you can do to make yourself a really good broadcaster before you even get to secondary school. Clare’s Homework: Write up a school event as a 250-word report, then write it up as a 500-word report, then try and do a 40-second voice piece. Work out how many words you need (usually three words per second), and deliver it. You can film on an iPhone, then edit on a laptop or iPad.

AFRICAN ADVENTURES PHOEBE, 13, OUR JUNIOR TRAVEL CORRESPONDENT, REPORTS ON HER LATEST TRAVELS IN SOUTH AFRICA. “I dreamed of going to Africa and when I finally got there the reality was more amazing than I could have imagined. I might have had to get up at 5.30 every morning but the excitement of what the day would bring had me leaping out of bed. In the Kalahari Desert, breathing in the smell of Africa, I felt like I had stepped into another world. We followed a wild dog hunt on our first game drive and the excitement was almost unbearable. The females led the way while the teenagers caused all sorts of mayhem chasing porcupine, warthog and too many antelope to count. As darkness settled the hunt became more serious and I was actually glad not to see a kill. I have never felt so conflicted; while I wanted them to feed I could not help but cheer on the brave animals that fought them off. We tracked lions and made plaster casts of their giant paw prints. We found the pride lazing by a water hole while the cubs fed and annoyed the adults. When they ALL began to grunt and roar the air seemed to vibrate, my hair stood on end, my spine tingled and my tummy rolled. It got louder and louder before the two males roared so loud that even the truck shook. It was exhilarating!

While watching a meerkat colony, our tracker picked up fresh cheetah tracks and moments later we were lucky enough to see two of them lying in the evening sun watching the world go by. I will never forget my first sunset over the Kalahari, the sand and sky turned every shade of green, blue and pink imaginable until all I could see were silhouettes and stars that seemed close enough to touch. In the Kruger we tracked rhino and saw a leopard up a tree with its kill, found lions, giraffe, hippo, elephant and buffalo. We were even surprised by a hyena while on a ‘pit’ stop behind a bush one morning. We had our luxurious safari tent raided (while we were out!) by a troop of very clever baboons who took clothes, washbags and my sister’s Latin revision - or that is what she told school. I was a little scared but mostly cross until the guides made me laugh by saying that somewhere out in the bush were some very well dressed and perfumed baboons with fresh breath reciting their tenses. I will never forget a single day and I cannot wait to return. Africa really does get under your skin.”

Tennis Legend

TIM HENMAN

INTERVIEW

Tennis legend Tim Henman talks to School Notices about his early years on the circuit, how he left school at 16 to pursue his dream and his inspiring journey to the top

How did you get into tennis? My mum and dad played as well as my two older brothers, so I started playing with my family. When did you know you wanted a professional career in tennis? My mum took me to Wimbledon for the first time when I was six and I saw Bjorn Borg play. That was when I made my one and only career decision. Who inspired you? Firstly, my dad. He played a lot of different sports to a good standard and is still the most competitive man I know. Borg and Stefan Edberg were my tennis heroes. When did you realise you had serious talent? I won my first tournament when I was eight, which was a county event. Then I won my regional final but lost in the national final. What was it like being a junior on the circuit? I really enjoyed playing junior tournaments and had lots of friends on the circuit. As a junior, how did you mentally prepare for matches? I tried to think about my game plan and the way I wanted to play. It’s important to focus on the process not the outcome.

How many hours of training did you practise a day? From the age of 11, I played two hours of tennis and did 30 minutes of fitness training every day, six days a week during term time. In the school holidays, I played even more. I left school at 16 to play full time tennis. Did you have any superstitions or follow any rituals before getting on to the court? For my first few years playing at Wimbledon I always showered in the same shower, but then they redeveloped the changing rooms. Can you share some strategies for coping with the pressure on court? Pressure is all self-inflicted, so remember to play one point at a time and focus on the process. How did you keep your cool when umpire decisions didn’t go your way? I knew that getting frustrated would not help my performance. What advice do you have for young players when it comes to dealing with defeat? You learn more from your losses than your wins. Use it as motivation to get better. …and victory? Enjoy the moment, but ››

INTERVIEW

What a champ!

Naturally talented, Henman won his first tournament aged eight and never looked back

“YOU LEARN MORE FROM YOUR LOSSES THAN YOUR WINS. USE IT AS MOTIVATION TO GET BETTER” remember to analyse the things you could have done better. Psychological warfare is rife in tennis. What’s the best way to handle gamesmanship? In an individual sport it’s important to control things you can control, i.e. your preparation and performance. You can’t control what your opponent is doing so don’t be distracted by it. How involved do you get in your own children’s tennis? Not a huge amount. They all play at school and enjoy the game but none of them have aspirations to play the game professionally. What are your top tips for tennis parents? Be supportive but don’t go over the top. Is it quality or quantity when it comes to children’s practice? Quality, definitely. Does a child have to have natural talent to succeed? I think natural talent helps but dedication and application are very important as well.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a tennis court, what’s the best way to develop a child’s game at home? A great way to practise is against a wall, it never misses! What’s the best route into the game today? Through a local club where you can hopefully play with friends and have fun. How do you go about choosing a suitable racket? When you’re young, height and strength dictates the racket you should use. It’s also important to get the grip size right.

Henman on the spot

Best win? Roger Federer in the 2001 Wimbledon quarter-final Favourite court? Centre Court at Wimbledon Best opponent? Roger Federer Who will lift the 2017 Wimbeldon trophies? Andy Murray and Karolina Pliskova.

“Sponsoring lacrosse fits closely with our broader objective to help the young develop life skills and personal qualities” Philip Howell. CEO Rathbones

This summer we’ll welcome the best in the world for the FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup – the largest women’s elite sporting event in the UK. As part of their commitment to young people and women’s sport, Rathbone Investment Management asked three leading female athletes about what it takes to achieve your dreams. Gill Burns, Charlotte Edwards and Kate RichardsonWalsh achieved remarkable international success in their respective sports: rugby, cricket and hockey. Each captained their country and have gained a wealth of knowledge on what it takes to win and achieve one’s goals. “I think in order to be world class, hard work is first and foremost,” says Olympic gold medal hockey star Richardson-Walsh. “It doesn’t come easy, I wish there was a bit of magic gold dust you could sprinkle and you’d be there, but it’s so much hard work.” Bouncing back when things don’t go your way is also critical. “You’ve got to be resilient,” says

“I THINK IN ORDER TO BE WORLD CLASS, HARD WORK IS FIRST AND FOREMOST” Kate Richardson-Walsh

former World Cup cricket champion, Edwards. “There are so many highs and lows throughout an international career. Sometimes more lows than highs, and I think riding them is key.” As with nearly all team endeavours, there is great emphasis on the cohesion of the group. “You’re part of a big machine,” says former rugby World Cup winner, Gill Burns, one of the first women to be inducted into the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame. “And you might have an important role within that machine – but you’re only as important as every other part.” The strong team ethos in lacrosse is one of the many reasons why Rathbones has been proud to support the development of the sport especially

within schools. At grassroots level, helped by the Rathbones Community Expansion Programme, the number of female U14 lacrosse players more than doubled between 2014 and 2016. “Sponsoring lacrosse fits closely with our broader objective to help the young develop life skills and personal qualities,” says Rathbones CEO Philip Howell. “Whilst we started with junior girls’ lacrosse it was a natural step to help the World Cup come to the UK to shine a light on the sport and help inspire the young.” And for those starting out on a journey towards their dreams, be emboldened by advice from Kate Richardson-Walsh. “When I was a teenager growing up I thought maybe I can’t ever be world class, but actually everybody can be world class. Everybody has strengths. You just need to find those strengths and leverage on those strengths and be the very best that you can be.”

INTERVIEW

Wardrobe MISTRESS Me+Em founder Clare Hornby tells us about the inspiration behind the brand’s fine lines

How did ME+EM come about? I’ve always loved clothes and would design and make them with my mother as a child. My first job was at Harrods, where I got a taste for designer quality clothes I couldn’t afford. I then worked in advertising for 15 years, building brands. The idea behind ME+EM was to create beautiful, contemporary clothes that were affordable. How would you describe the ethos of the brand? We call it Intelligent Style. That means we pick the best, most wearable trends and incorporate them into flattering, affordable clothes that are beautifully designed, and will do more than one job for you. And your design style? It’s all about clean, flattering lines, beautifully pared-down silhouettes and contemporary shapes. To what personal and professional influences do you attribute this? For years I’ve thought about what it takes to make a fashion icon, those pieces like the perfect blazer or the Breton top that earn a long-term place in your wardrobe. So I’m influenced of course by Coco Chanel, the way she insisted on pared-down simplicity and clothes you can move in, live in, dress up, dress down. But I’m also influenced by my own family life and professional life, the way I want versatile clothes that look and feel great 18 hours a day.

What are the special ingredients that make ME+EM so wearable? The special ingredient is the thought behind it. We’ve thought about how women live, work and socialise now. We’ve thought about how to best flatter women’s bodies. We’ve thought about how clothes feel, how they travel, how they wash and how they fit. How can women get the best out of ME+EM? By knowing they can wear them in different ways for work, travel, weekends, parties… Which are your must-have pieces? I wear our Utility Chic Summer Jacket round the clock. I can’t wait to get one of our new blazers. They are the perfect way to add a hit of chic - great for work, and elegant for parties with a jumpsuit and strappy heels.

Clare's must-have pieces Tie-front luxe blazer, £249 (above), oversized summer blazer, £249, utility chic summer jacket, £229 and wrap belted blazer, £249.

GIRLwer po

Enjoying sport is crucial to a happy and successful school life, believes head of Wycombe Abbey Rhiannon Wilkinson Through sport, girls learn resilience, leadership, and teamwork. The skills they develop on the field and in the gym underpin their academic success and enable them to become healthy and happy young women. It is our aim to equip each girl with the knowledge and confidence to enjoy sport for its own sake. Whether in PE lessons, clubs or extra-curricular activities, our pupils are encouraged to engage with sports they love and feel comfortable playing. The benefits of a positive sporting culture are felt across the school with pupils able to relax and spend time with their peers away from the classroom. Girls

need to be healthy to achieve in all areas of life and to make the most of their intellect and academic skills. Learning to deal with success and failure is a large part of this, and while competition is a very useful motivator, knowing that even the best lose at times is an immensely valuable life lesson. Our PE curriculum focuses on these values and help girls flourish in sport regardless of their level of skill. To achieve this, we offer pupils a wide range of activities to ensure each individual is inspired. Our lessons have included everything from a Bollywood dance workshop to martial arts. Beyond formal lessons we offer

a range of activities for recreation. In recent years, the number of girls playing sports purely for fun has risen dramatically. We now have more than 250 girls taking tennis lessons. The vast majority of these do not play competitively. Niche sports such as fencing and kickboxing are rising in popularity and each week 45 girls do Pilates classes. Through these activities, we seek to give every girl the opportunity to find and follow her sporting ambition. It is our hope that as more schools adopt this objective, girls across the country will be inspired to greater success and the profile of women’s sport will continue to rise.

Brain TRAINING

Learning and behavioural problems needn’t be a life sentence. Psychologist Sarah Warley of The Key Clinic explains how drug-free treatment can unlock your child’s potential When Bertie came to The Key Clinic last year, he was seven years old and in a world of his own. He made very little eye contact and had limited social skills. He struggled to read, had very messy writing and couldn’t ride a bike. He was extremely picky about food and had regular tantrums. The children who come to our clinic may have been labelled dyslexic, dyspraxic, ADD, Asperger’s, slow processing, or their parents may simply have a hunch that they are not performing as well as they could be. These children are often smart and capable, but cannot access or express that intelligence because something is quite literally ‘blocking’ their way. They feel different from their classmates, talk of being ‘stupid’ and lack confidence. Parents do

“BERTIE IS NOW A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BOY. HE HAS SELF-BELIEF AND IS DOING BRILLIANTLY AT SCHOOL. HE CAN RIDE A BIKE AT LAST, HAS MADE IT INTO THE ‘A’ CRICKET TEAM AND HAS LOST HIS DIAGNOSIS.” Annabel, mother

their best to help them, investing large sums in their education. However, few realise that their child may not be developmentally ready to process a formal education. While labels like dyslexia describe a cluster of symptoms, little is done to try to understand why the symptom is there in the first place. Our aim at The Key Clinic is to explore the different causes of these symptoms and treat the underlying problem. We use a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach to find the right ‘key’ to unlock each child’s potential. We use four main keys: neurodevelopmental, auditory, nutritional and cranial osteopathic. Each key is based on our ever-increasing understanding of neuroplasticity, which sees the brain not as static and unchangeable, but as a dynamic, flexible organ, capable of rewiring itself, building new connections and evolving every minute of every day. This means that problems, like Bertie’s, which once were deemed ‘for life’, can be overcome, provided the right stimulation is given to the brain. Bertie started with a series of simple, daily neurodevelopmental exercises and individually tailored vitamin shots which could be hidden in his drinks. Within six weeks he was showing improvement. By the end of the programme, he was flying.

REVIEW

Gift tokens With screen time becoming a daily battleground, Susannah Warren introduces TimeTokens to help manage her children’s digital diet – with life-changing results It’s a beautiful day outside. The house is deliciously quiet. But where are the children? Daisy, seven, is watching mindless TV in the playroom, Wilfred, five, is in his bedroom, nose to tablet, immersed in the virtual world of Minecraft. I’m not sure exactly how long they’ve been gorging on these tech treats (parenting fail), but it’s almost certainly too long. It’s time for battle and the inevitable screen withdrawal process – aka, a total meltdown – to commence. Sound familiar? Well, if getting your kids to turn off a device feels more like making a drug addict go cold turkey, I have glad tidings for

you in the form of TimeTokens. Designed by a mother with her seven-year-old son, it’s a simple, inexpensive system that empowers children aged between five and 10 to manage their own screen time via a pack of fun, tangible tokens and a magnetic LCD timer. Worn down by my daily digital battles, I decided to give it a whirl. As soon as the handy orange wallets dropped through the letterbox, they couldn’t wait to get started. After agreeing an allowance of five hours per week as a realistic starting point, they signed their personal Promise Contracts and stuck them to

the fridge. Then, whenever they wanted some screen time, they handed over the relevant TimeTokens - they come in handy denominations of five, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes – and set the timer accordingly. Initially, I was rather skeptical of their ability to self-regulate, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Although they used up their five hours’ worth too quickly in week one, they went without until their wallet was replenished for the new week and became much more discerning about how they “spent” their TimeTokens thereafter. A good lesson of delayed gratification and time management learned! The timer turned out to be the real revelation, though. As soon as it started to beep, the kids immediately turned off whatever device they were on. Without argument. Hurrah! It turns out they loved being in charge and setting their own boundaries. We are now nearly a month into this healthier and more harmonious digital life and the novelty has yet to wear off. Now it’s just the grown-ups who need to sort their tech addictions out…

Looking to update your teen’s bedroom? Sporting Wallpaper has just the ticket for your avid England Rugby fan While last term’s rugby balls may have been bunged back in the locker room, replaced with cricket bats and tennis rackets for the summer season at school, the winter sport won’t be far from young fans’ minds as the British and Irish Lions Tour in New Zealand gets into full swing this month. A treat that comes round just once every four years, the tour has one of the strongest English contingents chosen for many years, thanks to a record-equalling 18-match winning streak from the home team. In short, there’s rarely been a better time to be an England Rugby fan. One mum who has cleverly tapped into this market is Frances Titmus Mather, who came up with the idea for a striking rugby-inspired wallpaper that young fans are sure to hanker after. “Whilst I was doing residential interiors, I noticed a lack of wallpaper for older children,” she explains. “So I approached the RFU with a design concept and sample, and they liked the idea.” Designed from heritage Twickenham programmes and match tickets garnered from the World Rugby Museum collection, the wallpaper includes rare examples from England’s matches against nations from around the world from as far back as 1910. It is now a fully licensed England Rugby product and has been stylishly featured at, you guessed it, Twickenham Stadium. “It makes a real impact wherever it is used and takes putting posters of your favourite team to the next level,” says Titmus Mather. And who says it’s just for kids; if you’ve got a rugby-mad grown-up at home, they might well have their eye on it for their study or garden shed, too. £35 per 10m roll www. sportingwallpaper.com

They also work brilliantly served on their own with dips, or as a speedy lunch option. Falafel are packed with protein, fibre and calcium from the chickpeas, as well as immune- and digestion-supporting herbs and spices such as turmeric, cumin, garlic and coriander. We have paired them with two delicious dressings: sweet tahini and fragrant harissa. We love to wrap them on a bed of pickled beetroot and top them with fresh coriander, sliced avocado and ribbons of carrot and cucumber. Then just drizzle and enjoy! FA LA FEL WR A PS Makes: 15 falafels Ingredients • 225g drained tinned chickpeas • 1 clove garlic • ½ a red onion (we use red as they are sweeter) • 1 tsp cumin • 1 tsp coriander • ¼-½ tsp chilli powder or cayenne pepper (depending how much heat your family likes) • ¼ tsp turmeric • 2 tbsp spelt flour (or gluten-free flour as required) • a large handful of mixed fresh parsley and coriander • salt and pepper to season • approx 20g sesame seeds Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 190C. 2. Drain and rinse the chickpeas and blitz them in a blender to a paste. Add the spices, onion, garlic, flour, seasoning and pulse to combine. Don’t blitz for too long as you want to retain some texture. Stir in the fresh herbs. 3. Next, roll the herby chickpea mixture into balls and coat them in sesame seeds 4. Place the falafel balls on a lined baking sheet and into the oven for 5-6 minutes. Turn and cook for another 5-6 minutes until they have taken on a little bit of colour. 5. Serve with a wrap or pitta pocket, sliced vegetables of your choice and our delicious dressings.

RECIPES

Baked falafel wrap tahini and harissa s with dressing TA HINI DIP Ingredients • ½ red pepper (pre-roasted chargrilled in a jar work well, too) • 80g peppadew peppers available in most supermarkets • 1 chilli - check the heat on the tip of your tongue. (If this is for young children I would advise using half) • 1 clove garlic • 1 tsp caraway seeds • 2 tsp cumin • 2 tsp tomato puree • 4 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp smoked paprika Instructions 1. Place all the ingredients except the olive oil into a small blender, or use a stick blender to blitz all until pureed. 2. Add the olive oil to help thicken and emulsify the dressing. This dip keeps brilliantly in the fridge.

G H A RISSA DR ESSIN Ingredients • 2 cloves garlic, grated or pasted • 2 tbsp tahini paste • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • ½ tbsp water • a drizzle of honey to sweeten, to taste Instructions Combine all the ingredients and add the water to loosen (the colour will lighten considerably on adding the water).

Thousands of children take part in schools’ triathlon series to raise nearly £300,000 for charity

Y

outh-led charity Restless Development partnered with Royal Russell School, Bradfield College, Cranleigh School and Marlborough College to put on its 2017 schools’ triathlon series. More than 2,500 children aged between seven and 14 took part across the four events in April and May, raising nearly an amazing £300,000 for charity. The fun and inclusive format saw the triathlons run as a relay in teams of four, with each team member completing all three disciplines. The swim came first, with younger teams from school years three and four doing a total of 200m in the pool and older teams swimming 400m. It was onto the bike

section next, with 4,000m (Year Three and Year Four teams) or 8,000m (the older ones) completed on an off-road track in school grounds; then a 3,000m or 6,000m relay run split equally between each four team members to finish. Now in its second year, the Flight Centresponsored event is the brainchild of entrepreneur and long-time trustee of Restless Development Jim Sewell. The father of three saw a gap for fun, sportsbased fundraising for children and plans to roll out more triathlons around the country, with the aim of raising £1 million a year. He said, “It was brilliant to partner with such great schools and see the children throwing themselves into it. I am so excited about the potential for this event – I want this to become the schools’ equivalent of the London Marathon.” Martin Reader, head of Cranleigh School, said ››

“I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR THIS EVENT – I WANT THIS TO BECOME THE SCHOOLS’ EQUIVALENT OF THE LONDON MARATHON” after his school had played host: “What a fantastic event! I stood anonymously marshalling children at the bicycle handover. I lost count of the times I heard the words, ‘That was so much fun!’ or, ‘That was brilliant!’. They won’t forget the day, which means they are more likely to remember the cause.” Sewell agreed: “The children have really understood that they can make a difference, and the combination of sport and charity in a children’s event has been incredibly powerful. Their efforts will help thousands of children in developing countries access health education and life skills, which will transform their lives.” An internationally respected development charity that funds nearly £20m of projects a year around the world, Restless Development’s work is delivered by young people, for young people, giving them the skills and resources to lead change. The triathlons also raised funds for the chosen charities of the host and participating schools. The events were a hit with parents, too. One commented, “What a wonderful event you managed

to put together for the children yesterday! The atmosphere was delightful, with lots of support from parents and fellow competitors, all of which combined to make it feel like a real festival of sport.” The series, also sponsored by Knight Frank, Frog Bikes and Warminghams, would not have been possible without the generosity of the four host schools, which donated use of their facilities. The schools needed an on-site swimming pool, extensive grounds and playing fields for transitions zones and running and cycling routes, as well as ample car parking and viewing space for more than 1,000 spectators. With safety paramount, Restless Development partnered with mass event organiser Human Race to ensure the triathlons were organised professionally. The series still relies heavily on volunteers to help run the events, however, so an extra pair of hands is always welcome for future events. Sewell says: “If anyone is interested in getting involved either as a project manager or to volunteer on the day, we would love to hear from them.”

Volunteers or schools interested in taking part in or hosting a 2018 Restless Triathlon to help raise £1 million for charity can contact Jim Sewell at jim@restlessdevelopment.org

We’re thrilled to be including so many new member schools this term and if you are reading this for the first time, we’d like to welcome you to our growing club. In addition to providing you with a friendly parent marketplace, our goal at School Notices has always been to harness the power of our incredible parent and alumni communities. If every parent simply posts one free notice on the School Notices website, it immediately creates a value to business advertisers and your school directly benefits. Across the country, more than 100 schools are now capitalising on the power of their own communities to help raise funds for some amazing causes, and we continue to grow further afield with our fast-approaching launch in Asia this summer. The really exciting news is that our developers have been beavering away over the last few months to bring you a fantastic new site, which will launch next term and is going to bring you a hugely improved experience. We’re looking forward to sharing it with you! Raising funds is what it’s all about at School Notices and our free parent noticeboard is attracting more and more advertising revenue to share with member schools. Some schools donate all funds raised to charity, while others use it to start a bursary fund. But whatever it is used for, it is generated entirely by our members, so we’d like to say a very big thank you.
