Amanda Das Schwein im Orchestergraben Illustrations by Kerstin Hlawa 32 pages with CD – hardback Numerous colour illustrations 21,5 x 27,0 cm € 19.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0740-8 · ED 21032

A music-loving pig who, on top of that, is in love too? There is no such thing? Yes, there is! When Adalbert moves to the farm where Amanda lives, she is thrilled all at once. And when Amanda notices that Adalbert beautifully plays the violin, she is first enraptured and then even falls in love. But Amanda is not so blinded by love that she does not discover Adalbert’s secret: Before every performance, the violinist suffers with severe stagefright. Amanda would be glad to help him. But how? Amanda finds a solution. She acts as a lucky charm, thus being close not only to Adalbert, but also to the music unlike any other pig before. Note: In Germany, the pig is a symbol of good luck. Mit Musik kenn ich mich aus

Komponistenporträts für Kinder Vol. 2

Instrumentenkunde für Kinder Illustrations by Michael Boland

32 pages – hardback 21,5 x 27,0 cm € 19.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0739-2 · ED 21027

88 pages – softcover 21,0 x 29,7 cm € 16.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0747-7 · ED 21056

The year 1840 saw the birth of the probably most famous Russian composer – Pyotr Tchaikovsky. As a little boy he loved nature, so it was all the more painful for him to move with his parents first to Moscow and soon after to the Tsar’s capital, St. Petersburg. Inspired by the folk music of his country, he began to compose very early and left a varied and abundant oeuvre. But it is his ballet works that Tchaikovsky is most loved and admired for: Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Nutcracker delight both children and adults alike. Dirk Walbrecker and Maren Blaschke make the life and work of one of the most important composers of classical music accessible to children and at the same time resurrect the magic of old Russia with their texts and pictures.

Why do instruments sound differently? What makes an instrument special? Which instruments constitute an orchestra? – These are just a few of the questions asked and answered in this book of musical instruments for children. This edition is about the building, playing, sound, repertoire and history of the instruments which are brought to life on the accompanying CD. It is the ideal companion in instrument and music lessons and the perfect guide for choosing the right instrument. Dorothea and Rudolf Nykrin have been working as music teachers for decades. For SCHOTT MUSIC, Rudolf Nykrin coordinates the well-established educational works of ‘Music and Dance for Children’ and the series ‘Mit Musik kenn ich mich aus’, among others.

Dirk Walbrecker studied German studies and pedagogics among others. Worked as a teacher and for the film. Since 1986 freelance author: screenplays, radio plays, picture books, children’s and juvenile novels. Many reading tours. (www.dirkwalbrecker.de)

Dancing bats, partying cuddly toys, running musical mice and many jointly drumming hands – ‘Musikmäuse’ provides a lot of fun, games and music for the little ones thanks to numerous well-tried songs with easy instructions which can be ‘playfully’ put into practice with twoand three-year-olds in kindergarten, in parent-child groups or even at home. Active music-making with instruments suitable for children complement the experience of music. The accompanying CD invites singing and playing along.

‘Orff-Instrumente und wie man sie spielt’ is a textbook and practice manual alike. It provides extensive and descriptive information on the way of playing the individual instruments, including numerous methodological information and valuable tips. Apart from information on the selection, care and maintenance as well as development of the instruments, this edition also contains numerous practical examples and instrumental pieces as well as corresponding sound examples and playback tracks on CD. All this can be put into practice without any prerequisites – musical knowledge is not mandatory. ‘Orff-Instrumente und wie man sie spielt’ is a reliable companion for group lessons in kindergarten and primary school – but also for anybody who works with the instruments in groups.

136 pages – softcover with ca. 300 illustrations 21,0 x 29,7 cm € 19.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0684-5 · ED 20709

This book offers 40 new ways to write one’s own song. What is so special about it is: Most of these ways can be implemented without any prerequisites; musical knowledge or instrumental skills are not required. At the end of this workshop, the reader not only has written his/her own song but also has a profound knowledge of forms, metrics and musical basics. In this sense, ‘Songwriting’ is also a playful approach to the world of music theory – a compendium which is suitable for both self-study or music and German lessons or for teaching at music schools.

This edition offers ideal possibilities to approach the artistic and educational work at schools and music schools and during spare time. With the help of the preceding warm-ups and music examples for music-playing in class, group lessons and training which can be adapted flexibly to the different target groups, the approach to music-making is conducted in a more playful, certain and goal-directed way than would be the case with a leap in the dark.

Arrangieren Ein Praxis-Kurs für Einsteiger und Fortgeschrittene

‘Liebling, mein Herz lässt dich grüßen’

Der erfolgreichste Komponist der UfA-Zeit erinnert sich

368 pages – hardback with dust jacket 13,5 x 21,5 cm € 22.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0751-4 · ED 21041

This practical course teaches arrangers basic techniques: from preliminary ideas to the writing of the score and the notation of the individual parts. Melody, harmony, rhythm, form and instrumentation are topics that are dealt with in such a way that they can be applied to personal projects – without determining a certain style and while remaining open to the development of personal ideas. Exercises and suggested solutions make this book a compact course, with explanations on technical terms as well as transposition charts and charts of instrumental ranges, which invites the reader to consult it. ‘Arranging means to solve problems’, as the arranger Richard Roblee once said. This book just does not allow problems to arise.

‘You don’t know me, but you have heard a lot of me…’ This is how Werner Richard Heymann often introduced himself. The composer of still unforgotten sound-film hits like Liebling, mein Herz lässt dich grüßen or Ein Freund, ein guter Freund was also an astonishingly accurate and humorous observer. In his memoirs, he honours the memory of numerous personalities from 20th-century literary, film and music history. Hubert Ortkemper has succeeded in making the tape-recorded memoirs of the most important UfA composer into something entertaining and historically fascinating. The (auto-)biography about the fate of a German Jew which leads the reader from the end of the Weimar Republic via Hollywood back to post-war Germany is now available in an expanded edition.

Andreas Kissenbeck, born in Bonn in 1969, is a pianist, keyboarder and Hammond organist. He works as a lecturer at the music academy of Münster and part-time lecturer of jazz piano and music theory at the music academies of Munich, Hanover and Würzburg. As an author, he has published several books on jazz theory.

Hubert Ortkemper, born in 1943, studied theatre studies, classical archaeology and art history in Munich and Berlin. He was director of the Berliner Filmförderung and later produced numerous documentaries and portraits for television. As a book author, he has made a name for himself with publications on the history of the opera among others.

Die Jahre in Rom und Tivoli

Biography

232 pages – hardcover with dust jacket 24,0 x 30,0 cm € 49.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0715-6 · ED 20860

176 pages – softcover 12,0 x 19,0 cm € 12.99 ISBN 978-3-254-08418-7 · SEM 8418

Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century and one of the most important composers of his era, is regarded as an unusually charismatic personality. Whereas the years in which Liszt travelled around Europe as a celebrated piano virtuoso or worked in Weimar as composer and kapellmeister are well known and documented, the 25 years (1861-86) spent in Rome and Tivoli have been neglected up to now. This richly illustrated pictorial history describes for the first time in great detail the life and work of Liszt in the ‘Eternal City’ where he turned towards Catholicism and where he created his radical late works. At the same time, the numerous documentary pictures most of which have previously been unpublished create an impressive portrait of 19th-century Rome. With a foreword and CD by Alfred Brendel.

He spent almost his whole life in Paris, his home town. He never was in Spain. And yet, Bizet’s Carmen is regarded as the epitome of Spanish opera. But the composer did not live to see its overwhelming success around the world. Exactly three months after the world premiere in March 1875 he died at the age of only 36 years. Even today, his remarkable overall oeuvre is eclipsed by this singular masterpiece. Published in 1991 for the first time, the biography of Christoph Schwandt still is the only one available in German. The standard work which includes important research results and findings from the second half of the 20th century is now published in an updated and expanded edition. Christoph Schwandt, born in Bad Homburg in 1956, held leading positions at various theatres as well as at the Salzburg Festival. From 2002-2009 he worked as literary director of the Opera of Cologne. As an author, he has published biographies of Giuseppe Verdi and Leos Janácek among others.

Ernst Burger, born in 1937, lives in Munich as a pianist and author. With his award-winning documentary biographies about Liszt, Chopin and Schumann, he has made a name for himself as an outstanding chronicler of the 19th century.

Helmut Lachenmann

Ulrich Mahlert (Ed.)

Musik als existentielle Erfahrung

Handbuch Üben

Writings 1966–1995 (2nd edition 2004)

Grundlagen, Konzepte, Methoden With essays by E. Altenmüller, U. Mahlert, G. Mantel, Chr. Richter, P. Röbke, W. Rüdiger, M. Saxer, H. Wiedemann and others (2nd edition 2007)

488 pages – hardcover € 58.00 ISBN 978-3-7651-0247-9 · BV 247

416 pages – paperback € 36.00 ISBN 978-3-7651-0314-8 · BV 314

Lachenmann’s central essays such as ‘Klangtypen der Neuen Musik’ (Types of Sound in New Music), ‘Die gefährdete Kommunikation’ (Endangered Communication), ‘Zum Problem des musikalisch Schönen heute’ (The Problem of Beauty in Music Today), and his essays on Mahler, Schoenberg and Nono are among the most important testimonies of autonomous musical thought in our time. In addition to Lachenmann’s major essays, this volume of writings also contains all of the composer’s work introductions as well. The reprint 2004 is essentially the result of an intensive and critical reading of the previous text by Lachenmann himself. The text was generally only slightly altered, with passages rewritten and the language occasionally lightened. Only the analysis of the Second String Quartet ‘Dance of the Blessed Spirits’, which was very topical back in 1996, was newly conceived and substantially changed. The editor’s observations, work catalogue and discography have been revised and updated.

There’s no way around it: all musicians have to practice their whole life long. Yet very few musicians confront this ‘necessary evil’ and give it much serious thought. One might say that practicing has not been made practicable for the practical musician... In his ‘Handbuch Üben’, the experienced music teacher Ulrich Mahlert has brought together a number of renowned authors from the performing arts and neighbouring disciplines who are more than familiar with the joys and problems of practicing. Their essays have given rise to an important book that is rich in details on a topic that is often perplexing and always timely. The concise subtitle ‘Fundamentals. Concepts. Methods’ is programmatic, for the book seeks to convey impulses for pleasurable and fruitful practicing. In the best of cases, individually adjusted practicing can contribute to self-perception, self-criticism and personal development. The book has fulfilled its purpose if this goal is reached. One can only hope that this volume will become a standard work for everyone who practices!

Lexikon Musiktheorie

ABC Musik

Music Theory from A(bbreviatur) to Z(wölftonmusik)

446 Sätze zur Musiklehre New enlarged edition 2009

346 pages (2nd edition) – paperback 19,0 x 12,0 cm € 12.80 ISBN 978-3-7651-0370-4 · BV 370

360 pages – paperback 19,0 x 12,0 cm € 9.80 ISBN 978-3-7651-0309-4 · BV 309

Thanks to his ‘Lexikon Musiktheorie’, the knowledgeable author Thomas Krämer fills a gap that was open for far too long. He explains all standard concepts from such typical disciplines of music theory as harmony, counterpoint and thoroughbass in a succinct and easily comprehensible manner, often exploring stylistic and historical aspects as well. The spectrum of the contents has been deliberately expanded through excursions into domains such as formal design, new compositional methods and jazz theory – where co-author Manfred Dings’ special knowledge comes in handy. Providing vivid visual enhancements are the many short music examples that provide an additional elucidation to nearly every key word.

Countless students have learned their musical basics from ‘ABC Musik.’ After five very successful editions of the book which was first published in 1997, Wieland Ziegenrücker has thoroughly revised, updated and expanded his fundamental work. The new edition provides greater emphasis on the essential qualities of ‘ABC Musik’: a comprehensive selection of topics, well-grounded structure, visually compelling presentation, easily understandable language, practical exercises for learning control, and an index with explanations of technical terms.

Jonas Kaufmann „Meinen die wirklich mich?“

Erinnerungen und Gespräche aufgezeichnet von Thomas Voigt

Ersungenes Glück 176 pages – hardcover 30 b&w images 13,5 x 21,5 cm € 19.90 ISBN 978-3-89487-671-5

176 pages – laminated paperback with coloured images 13,5 x 21,5 cm € 19.90 ISBN 978-3-89487-669-2

On 20 August 1977, the space probe Voyager II was launched from Cape Canaveral, with copper-engraved recordings of earthly sounds and greetings in many languages on board. Also aboard: Edda Moser’s internationally acclaimed interpretation of the aria ‘Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen’ from Mozart’s Magic Flute. But the soprano was not only a brilliant Queen of the Night: whether at the Met or the Vienna State Opera, with Luciano Pavarotti or Plácido Domingo, under the direction of Leonard Bernstein or Claudio Abbado – Edda Moser had been among the great ones of her profession for many years. That, however, as she tells candidly in this book, did not spare her great personal disappointments, both in her professional and in her private life. Her conversations with the music journalist and film maker Thomas Voigt also take a look at basic aspects of the singing profession.

Since his sensational debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in February 2006 Jonas Kaufmann has ranked among the top stars of the opera scene. The international press hailed him as ‘the new king of tenors’, insiders celebrate him as the most important German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich. Whether New York, London, Paris or Milan: The world’s leading opera houses scramble to get him: He sings fantastic, is very good-looking, intelligent, has a gift for languages and is an excellent actor. In July 2010 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival, playing the title role in Hans Neuenfels’ new production of Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ brilliantly. Despite his success, the real Bavarian boy has remained refreshingly natural and down-to-earth. In his interview with the music journalist Thomas Voigt he talks at length about the bright and dark sides of his profession for the first time. - The first book on the internationally celebrated star tenor - First edition out of print shortly after publication - With contributions by Plácido Domingo, Angela Gheorghiu, Nathalie Dessay, Antonio Pappano, Peter Gelb, Franz Welser-Möst, among others

Edda Moser, daughter of the Berlin musicologist Hans Joachim Moser, was one of the most renowned Mozart singers throughout the world in the 1970s and 1980s. Today she teaches singing at the Cologne Musikhochschule and at international master classes.

‘A singer after my own heart’ Plácido Domingo

Thomas Voigt works as a freelance author, journalist and film maker. In 2010, the recipient of the Gottlob Frick Medal in Gold successfully published the first biography of the star tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

Oskar Wälterlin und sein Theater der Menschlichkeit

Dance Techniques 2010 Tanzplan Germany

304 pages – hardcover with dust jacket 50 b&w images 13,5 x 21,5 cm € 24.90 ISBN 978-3-89487-662-3

304 pages – paperback 2 DVDs 84 b&w images 21,0 x 27,0 cm € 24.90 ISBN 978-3-89487-689-0

It was due to his style of staging ‘humanist-realistic’ works that Oskar Wälterlin influenced the entire Germanlanguage theatre in the 20th century. After having worked at the theatre of Basel and the Frankfurt Opera, Wälterlin in 1938 became director of the Zurich Theatre, the most important venue of the German-language theatre in exile outside the National Socialist sphere of influence. The Zurich theatre staged numerous world and German-language premieres of plays that were banned in German and Austria, such as Thornton Wilder’s ‘Our Little Town’ (1939) or Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Mother Courage’ (1941). Among Wälterlin’s ensemble were actors such as Therese Giehse, Leonard Steckel or Wolfgang Langhoff as well as, after the war, Gustav Knuth, Will Quadflieg or Brigitte Horney. Authors like Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt made their breakthrough with Wälterlin’s productions. This book gives a lively description of the life of a great humanist who had dedicated himself heart and soul to the theatre.

In this publication – edited by Tanzplan Deutschland e.V. and written by renowned international choreographers and dance experts – the most important techniques of modern, post-modern and contemporary dance (José Limón, Trisha Brown, JoossLeeder, Jennifer Muller, Anouk van Dijk, etc.) will be presented. The book looks into questions like: What is bodily trained? What kind of aesthetics is being transported? Which concepts of communication and working practices are taught? How can the method or technique be classified within dance history? 30 photographs and 2 training DVDs complement the lessons. Tanzplan Deutschland e.V. was initiated in 2005 by the German Federal Cultural Foundation to develop a wide range of measures that would ensure the highest levels of sustainability for dance until 2010. 2 DVDs will show examples of basic trainings in all techniques. Ingo Diehl and Friederike Lampert, the editors in charge, are both dancers, dance teachers and dance researchers.

The first book on contemporary dance techniques

Thomas Blubacher, who has got a PhD in theatre studies, works as a theatre director and journalist. His bestselling book ‘Gibt es etwas Schöneres als Sehnsucht?’ Die Geschwister Eleonora und Francesco von Mendelssohn was published by Henschel in 2008.
