Peter Tschaikowsky The year 1840 saw the birth of the probably most famous Russian composer – Pyotr Tchaikovsky. As a little boy he loved nature, so it was all the more painful for him to move with his parents first to Moscow and soon after to the Tsar’s capital, St. Petersburg. Inspired by the folk music of his country, he began to compose very early and left a varied and abundant oeuvre. But it is his ballet works that Tchaikovsky is most loved and admired for: Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Nutcracker delight both children and adults alike.

Komponistenporträts für Kinder Composer Portraits for Children Robert Schumann Vol. 1 Peter Tschaikowsky Vol. 2 Ludwig van Beethoven Vol. 3 32 pages with CD – hardback Numerous colour illustrations 21,5 x 27,0 cm € 19.99

Ludwig van Beethoven Dirk Walbrecker invites his readers on a journey to the days of Viennese Classicism, letting Ludwig van Beethoven tell stories from his exciting life: about revolutionary Europe, about famous artists in his environment as well as about his visionary music. We accompany Ludwig in a horse-drawn carriage from Bonn to Vienna and to the Bohemian spas, get to know something about his ‘Immortal Beloved’ and much about how he composed although he lost his hearing in the course of his life. Illustrated with imaginative illustrations by Maren Blaschke, Beethoven’s life and his days come alive in their very own way. A selection of his most popular works recorded on the accompanying CD leaves the reader musically enchanted.

Robert Schumann Unlike hardly any other composer, Robert Schumann is able to make children see the beauty of classical music. As a father of eight children, he virtually wrote ‘hits for kids’ almost 200 years ago: Works such as ‘Kinderszenen’ or the ‘Album für die Jugend’ and many other pieces have got children enthusiastic about piano playing for generations. In the first person, Robert tells of his childhood, his youth and his eventful musical life. Children (and their parents) hear from his own mouth when, how and where his famous compositions were created. They hear about fascinating things of that time and about Schumann’s composer friends – and above all about his great love of Clara Schumann, also a composer and famous pianist even as a child…

Dirk Walbrecker studied German studies and pedagogics among others. Worked as a teacher and for the film. Since 1986 freelance author: screenplays, radio plays, picture books, children’s and juvenile novels.

This book is aimed at singers who wish to acquire sound knowledge of music-reading and improve their sight-singing skills. It is possible to approach this subject on all levels. This is why this book is suitable for absolute beginners and advanced singers alike. A navigation system facilitates fast orientation and ‘picks’ every user up exactly where he or she stands at the moment. In addition, the book contains recapitulatory exercises as well as an accompanying CD which enables the singer to review the acquired knowledge at any time.

‘Singen Lesen Schreiben’ in the ‘Musik macht schlau’ series provides versatile material for language promotion with music in the first years at primary school. 20 songs initiate varied games and exercises for learning how to read and write. Apart from important information on speech development, the teacher’s book provides 20 well-prepared teaching units which show how easy reading and writing skills can be improved through singing. The practical and well-proven material covers different learning levels and is therefore also suitable for the work with heterogeneous learning groups. The CD accompanying the teacher’s book contains all songs in varied arrangements.

Live arrangements combine composition and arrangement techniques with educational practice, their aim and result being musical pieces which are developed in a spontaneous and process-oriented manner during rehearsal. Each participant thus plays an active part in the creative process.

‘Rhythmik kinderleicht’ is a practical book which arose as a result of the author working with kindergarten and primary school children. It contains songs, spoken verses and little stories, movement games and dances, as well as numerous musical pieces for making music or playing along.

Both the book and the DVD provide all tips and tricks for live arrangements with different target groups very clearly, from school class to professional choir, from basic level to highly professional performance. Thus, a plain sheet of music morphs into a group arrangement for an unusual instrumentation, a sheet of lyrics into a choral arrangement for several voices, or a succession of chords into a perfectly fitting band arrangement.

The well-known author Susanne Peter shows how easy it is to combine singing, moving, music-making and social learning. The 33 models provide a lot of material suitable to prepare one’s lessons flexibly, including all periods in Ordinary Time. African songs, information on the use of boomwhackers and many practical tips add colour to the collection. The easy-to-realize models are suitable for kindergarten, music schools, primary school and special schools. Including master copies for copying.

For many years, Jürgen Terhag and Jörn Kalle Winter have studied and tested the methodology of live arrangements. This fundamental work summarizes their findings for the first time – for everybody who wishes to bring a new creativity to their musical group work.

The accompanying CD contains all songs, play-along pieces, music for rhythmical movement and dances contained in the book. ‘Rhythmik kinderleicht’ thus is a treasure chest for all who like to make music with children.

A choir director has to be more than a magician with a baton. Perfect organisation, careful preparation and profound skills form the basis of his work. In addition, his work as a musical communicator and motivator holds far-reaching social relevance. Using a new combination of media, Simon Halsey, choir director of international renown and passionate educationalist, passes on his own personal experiences: a plethora of practical information on the work with both amateur choirs and professional ensembles. While the DVD shows him as a teacher during one of his master classes for young choir directors and during rehearsals with the Berlin Radio Choir, the book provides information on the varied tasks of a choir director – from managing the choir via programming, studying the score and rehearsing to performing at a concert.

Solmization-assisted teaching – very old relating to its history and up-to-date relating to its methodology – is stimulating and full of variety, in small steps and comprehensive, intensive and exciting. Schools, choirs, music schools, universities, kindergartens and music academies, they all make use of its qualities in class, within the group or in individual lessons. This book explains what relative solmization is, which role it plays in music lessons and how to work with it. Annotated music examples are suitable both as material for one’s own lessons and for understanding progressively structured class schedules. Malte Heygster is an experienced conductor, music school director and teacher. He is particularly interested in the development of musical perception. As a writer, academy teacher and trainer in German-speaking countries, he devotes himself to modern methods supported by relative solmization.

For decades, Simon Halsey has been working with leading professional choirs of the world, but also with amateur ensembles on a regular basis. In 2001 he was appointed director of the Berlin Radio Choir. In 2002 the inventor of innovative concert projects and choral education programmes was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Das Leben der Grete Sultan zwischen Berlin und New York

Sein Leben, sein Werk, seine Zeit

320 pages – hardcover 13,5 x 21,5 cm € 29.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0800-9 · ED 21350

Grete Sultan (1906–2005) was one of the most exceptional pianists of the 20th century. Born and raised in a Jewish upperclass household in Berlin, she was an acclaimed interpreter of classical and new music in the 1920s. After being banned from exercising her profession and increasing harassment, she managed to leave the country in 1941 at the last minute. In New York, she became an established pianist and piano teacher and became the friend and muse of John Cage whose ‘Etudes Australes’ she performed throughout the world. Moritz von Bredow tells the story of Grete Sultan’s long life between trauma and success: a German-Jewish fate and a mirror of 20th-century music and contemporary history.

His ‘Méditation’ has almost become a ‘hit’, his operas ‘Manon’ and ‘Werther’ are part of the repertoire of all major opera houses – and yet, the composer Jules Massenet (1842–1912) has remained rather unknown up to now. But this is going to change now: On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Massenet’s death, Stefan Schmidl presents the first biography of this grand seigneur of the French opera in the German language. He shows that Massenet’s compositions were a lot more complex than ‘Manon’ and ‘Werther’ suggest – and presents a new view of the music history of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Moritz von Bredow works as a paediatrician and writer in Hamburg. This impressive documentation of the life of an exceptional artist is based on his personal encounter with Grete Sultan and many years of research.

Stefan Schmidl is a research fellow at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Apart from teaching and lecturing activities, he has published papers on topics in musicology, cultural science and media science.

No matter where those eager for knowledge are, whether at the university or on a park bench, this book presents this seemingly complicated subject everywhere in a well-founded way. After his authoritative books on harmony and analysis, Thomas Krämer’s ‘Kontrapunkt’ has been eagerly awaited. Now available, the great textbook is worded in an easily comprehensible way, contains more than 800 music examples, goes far beyond the four-part structure for the first time and also provides the three valuable excursus ‘Grundsätze der Textierung’ [Principles of Texture], ‘Generalbass und Kontrapunkt’ [Basso continuo and Counterpoint] as well as ‘Harmonielehre und Kontrapunkt’ [Harmony and Counterpoint] which virtually revolve around the core issue. Due to its comprehensive appendix with solutions, the book is especially suited for self-study.

From the thoroughbass era to late romanticism: Krämer’s method promotes the understanding of harmonic contexts and illustrates the transformation of the tonal language on the basis of numerous examples from music literature. Following the successful ‘Harmonielehre im Selbststudium’, the author presents a number of analysis exercises and suggests solutions in the appendix. The book is thus ideal for both the classroom and private study.

Orientation Aid for Music Instructors: Michael Dartsch offers a number of stunning perspectives on the theme of early musical training and, above all, on the concept of music education. Under the premise of education as a goal-concept, the author begins by sketching a general introduction to pedagogy. Then he focuses on the significance of music for human beings before defining the contents, methods and goals of instruction. After ‘Handbuch Üben,’ ed. by Ulrich Mahlert, and Christoph Wagner’s ‘Hand und Instrument’, ‘Mensch, Musik und Bildung’ is a further basic music-pedagogical volume published by Breitkopf & Härtel.

‘Umfassend Musizieren’ is not an in-depth essay that aims to give a comprehensive treatment of this vast topic. Instead, Andreas Doerne depicts the various dimensions of music-making in order to sketch the rudiments of an integral instrumental training. He departs from the conviction that music-making affects all levels of human life and should incorporate them when imparted to others. The goal is a comprehensive, varied training on the instrument, which gives rise to an intensive experience and existential relationship between man and music. ‘Umfassend Musizieren’ sees itself along with Michael Dartsch’s ‘Mensch, Musik und Bildung’ as a sequel to the publisher’s basic music-pedagogical writings, the first volumes of which – ‘Handbuch Üben’ ed. by Ulrich Mahler and Christoph Wagner’s ‘Hand und Instrument’ – were published a few years ago.

Vesselina Kasarova ranks among the most important and most versatile singers of the present time. Her international career is owed not only to her once-in-a-century voice but also to her charismatic personality. Although accustomed to success, the mezzo-soprano has always critically reflected on the profession of singer. She is an artist who not only has something to tell but also has something to say. Numerous much-noticed interviews and TV portraits testify to that. The present, richly illustrated book contains the sum of her experiences: In ten chapters, Vesselina Kasarova takes a look at the different aspects of a singer’s profession such as training, voice category, physical and mental requirements, dealing with colleagues and v, living a public life, crises and artistic fulfilment. A detailed biography written by Marianne Zelger-Vogt portrays Vesselina Kasarova’s career with its most important stages. Born in Bulgaria, Vesselina Kasarova was first trained as a concert pianist. After completing her vocal studies in Sofia in 1989, she was engaged by the Zurich Opera. After two years in the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, she began maintaining a busy schedule of international guest performances in 1993. With the Zurich Opera as her principal opera house, she has built a comprehensive repertoire over the years, covering works from the Baroque era via Mozart and the bel canto composers to Verdi and Wagner, which can be listened to in numerous recordings.

A rich tapestry of attributes have built up around the coloratura soprano Edita Gruberova: ‘queen of bel canto’, ‘Slovakian nightingale’ or even ‘the one and only’. Adored for her stupendous technique, her unique voice and her great dramatic ability by critics and fans alike, she has been on stage for almost 45 years. Her performances in Mozart works and bel canto roles are legendary and style-forming, her interpretations of the Queen of the Night, Lucia di Lammermoor or Zerbinetta unrivalled. Edita Gruberova is the only true ‘primadonna assoluta’ of our time. An artist who has always remained true to herself and to her voice, who has continuously and carefully developed her precious voice without submitting to the rules of the market. The music journalist Markus Thiel had accompanied the Gruberova attentively for ten years, having numerous conversations with her. His biography is the portrait of an exceptional artist, both refreshing and interesting to read. Markus Thiel, born in Bad Tölz in 1965, is music editor of the newspaper Münchner Merkur. In addition, he also works as a writer for the specialist magazine Opernwelt. His special interest has always been the music theatre. - The Queen of Bel Canto! - On stage at all major international opera houses for 45 years - Appears in Munich for her role debut in Bellini’s ‘La Straniera’

160 pages – hardcover with dust jacket 84 b&w images 13,50 x 21,5 cm € 19.90 ISBN 978-3-89487-732-3 · Publication date: August 2012

Many young people who like to sing feel the urge to professionalize their skills. In this context, the opera is still regarded as a fascinating professional environment which has brought forth real ‘pop stars’ like Anna Netrebko or Jonas Kaufmann. But it is not that easy to become an opera singer. And even if one has successfully completed one’s studies at a music academy or with private singing teachers, there is no guarantee that the entry into the profession will be successful or that the career will advance as desired. In his practical guide, Gerd Uecker, who knows the international opera scene unlike anybody else and who works with young opera singers throughout the world, explains in a clear and graphic way which stages a young singer has to pass through – starting with the personal requirements via training schemes, auditioning and first engagements through to the opera routines, treatment of the voice, crises and alternative professional paths.

Why was Herbert von Karajan invited only once to conduct the Cleveland Orchestra? Why do French orchestras go on strike more frequently than others and why are Swiss musicians always so serious? And how can classical music play a major role in society again? These and other questions are answered in this book by the world-renowned American conductor John Axelrod. In nine chapters, spiced with interesting observations and amusing anecdotes, he presents the most important international orchestras and their characteristics as well as the large variety of the orchestral landscape. In addition, Axelrod addresses the history of the profession of conductor, the development of the baton and the change of the relationship between conductor and orchestra. He describes the typical career of an orchestra musician, comments on the ‘cosmopolitanism’ of the composer and explains the importance of language for the understanding of cultures.

Gerd Uecker is regarded as one of the most prominent opera practitioners worldwide and lecturer in opera interpretation. His last theatre employment being as director of the Saxonian State Opera in Dresden (until 2010), he is now working mainly as a lecturer at various German and foreign universities and at international master classes.

John Axelrod has been working exclusively as a conductor since 2000, after studying music with Leonard Bernstein among others as well as after working as a talent scout for the record label RCA/BMG and as director of the Robert Mondavi Winery in California. He has worked with about 150 international orchestras, including numerous German-speaking ensembles. At present, he is the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ and musical director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire.

- Everything a singer has to know - Comprehensive information for the career entry and the first years on stage - Fascinating insights into the world of opera singing even for interested amateurs

- An international conductor tells tales out of school - An entertaining and informative look behind the scenes of an orchestra
