What does a little musician do when he feels lonely? He looks for a friend. And soon, there will be an orchestra of 10 players making music together: with rattles, cookware, a drum, a flute, a xylophone, etc. The text is nicely illustrated by whole-page pictures in four colours, making the children familiar with the numbers 1-10. The song of the 10 little musicians is printed at the end of the book. In addition, this book provides suggestions for how to make the instruments described in the story for oneself by using things and materials from everyday life. – It might be fun to stage the song in kindergarten or primary school. This is made easy with the help of the accompanying CD containing a recording of the song to sing-along. That way the performance will be a guaranteed success…
'Pssst …! Hello, can you see me? Guess who I am! Exactly! I'm a musical note …' Cecilia, the smart little note, loves to explore the exciting world of music together with children. She shows them how music was made thousands of years ago, how music is made in other countries, and which instrument families exist. She knows funny rhymes and songs, introduces her friends, the other notes, to the children and knows how to build a drum. And by means of little experiments, Cecilia examines with the children how to create noises and sounds. Cecilia's journey of discovery is narrated on the accompanying CD – with numerous sound examples: from bone scraper to electric guitar, from symphony orchestra to rock band. For children aged 4+ who want to get to know many things about the colourful world of music in a playful way.
Dorothée Kreusch-Jacob, music teacher from Munich, has been known for numerous publications of books and releases of CDs, focussing on new children's songs, musical travels of imagination, music theatre, breathing and silence, movement and relaxation. Lilo Fromm has gained a reputation that extends far beyond the borders of Germany thanks to her illustrated books and picture books. She has received numerous prizes, e.g. the German Youth Book Award and the Gold Medal of the Biennial in Bratislava. She lives in France.

Little Paul spends the weekend with his Uncle Ludwig, a professional cellist at a large orchestra. He takes little Paul with him to a concert in the evening. On their way, they make a short stop at the violin maker. Little Paul then has the opportunity to take a closer look at a symphony orchestra. He observes how the musicians warm up and gets to know some of Uncle Ludwig’s colleagues and their instruments. Finally, he hears his first symphony concert in its ‘classical’ form: contemporary piece, solo concerto, intermission, and large-scale symphony.
Little Paul visits a museum of musical instruments with his schoolmates. In the museum, one can see instruments from all over the world – very old ones, but also modern ones. Apart from well-known instruments, there are of course many other fascinating things to discover: sonorous stones from Northern Togo, a bone flute, the snake-shaped serpent, a walking-stick violin, an armadillo guitar, a giraffe piano and many more. In an entertaining way, the reader learns a lot about historical instruments and gets to know fascinating information on exotic instruments from faraway countries.

Little Paul gets a very special present from his grandma for his 6th birthday: he can learn to play a musical instrument if he likes. So the following week his mother takes him to the music school where he can have a look around. Ms von Moll, the headmistress, shows little Paul round the house: he gets to know many instruments, tries some out and listens to the great music concert in the evening.
Little Paul goes to the opera with his grandfather to see Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy-tale ‘Hänsel and Gretel’. Fascinated by the magic of the theatre, he is happy that his grandfather, who used to work as a stage designer there, makes it possible for little Paul to take a look behind the scenes as well. There he sees what is going on behind and under the stage, and he even takes a look at the orchestra pit, the ballet room, and various workshops. That way he learns a lot about the interesting work of the tailors, make-up artists, props, painters, and sound engineers.

How sad life can be if there is no one to play with! This is the fate of an old piano which is all alone in a cellar bar. Longingly, it remembers the days when the pianist Tom coaxed beautiful sounds out of it. But who appears in the cellar instead of Tom and starts to produce totally new sounds? First Nero, the amorous black tomcat with the white paws! Then Grrr, the amorous grey tomcat with the grim face! And finally Bianca, the elegant cute white cat with the black paws … A concerto for cats in major and minor modes, on black and white keys, with black, grey and white paws. And who plays best with whom in the end? The text and music of Katzenkonzert can be listened to on the accompanying CD – spoken by Dirk Walbrecker with jazzy classical improvisations by Jenö Nyári.
Book without accompanying music CD € 14.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0432-2 · ED 9307 There once lived a man whose head was filled with music – but the city was so noisy that he could barely hear the beautiful melodies. So he bought a house in the quiet countryside and invited other musicians to move in: the String family, the Woodwind and Brass families, a man with his piano, a harpist, and several percussionists. Soon sounds droned and groaned, thundered and rumbled throughout the house. This was not what the man had imagined. Find out how the musicians resolve their conflict and become a real orchestra. The CD version of this wonderful story is read by Godela Orff, the daughter of the famous composer Carl Orff. The music was written by the composer Michael Rüggeberg.

32 pages – hardback Illustrated in four colours 21,8 x 27,5 cm € 13.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0016-4 · ED 9208 Thekla, the portable piano of the Mozart family, now gathering dust in a dark loft and remembering past – and better – times, has a lot to tell: when Wolfgang made his first composition attempts on the piano and father Leopold made the first great concert tours with Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl in a coach, about the concert performance of the children before Empress Maria Theresia in Vienna (1762), about the trip to Paris and the rough crossing to England, and, finally, about the return to Salzburg in 1766. Mozart is described as a boy who has quite ordinary problems, who gets homesick on his trips and who longs for friendship. In addition, the book gives a short preview of his further musical work. Numerous – sometimes whole-page – pictures as well as an illustrated history of his life paint a colourful portrait of Mozart. With the help of a map, the reader can even follow Mozart’s travel route.
‘In days gone by there was a land where the nights were always dark, and the sky spread over it like a black cloth, for there the moon never rose, and no star shone in the obscurity.’ – This is the opening of the story ‘The Moon’‚ by the Brothers Grimm, set to music by Carl Orff. This story is about four young fellows who stole the moon in a foreign kingdom and placed it on a high oak tree in their own country. When the four men grew old and died, each one of them took one quarter of the moon with him into his grave – and the old state of darkness recommenced. In the world below, however, the pieces of the moon united themselves together again, and suddenly there was light where darkness had always prevailed, and it came to pass that the dead became restless and awoke from their sleep. And soon there was as much activity in the world below as it was on earth – until Saint Peter stepped in… This picture book, with atmospheric illustrations by Annegert Fuchshuber, reproduces the story as told by the Brothers Grimm, together with the complete libretto by Carl Orff. Brief notes on the composer himself and his work are also included. Annegert Fuchshuber (1940–1998) studied at the Werkkunstschule Augsburg. Since 1968 she illustrated and wrote children’s books and books for young people. Her works were translated into several languages and awarded various prizes, such as the German Youth Literature Award (in the category picture-book) and the Austrian Children’s and Youth Book Award (illustration). The books by Annegert Fuchshuber have been published by Ellermann, Ravensburger and Thienemanns, as well as St. Gabriel (Vienna) and Schott Musik International.

How can anyone have a name like Amadeus? A rather uncool name, thinks Nikolaj, the new student at the music boarding school of Treuenfels. And besides, what is he supposed to be doing here? His father, a famous tenor, went to school at Treuenfels. As if that were a reason to send his son here too! The fact that Amadeus, Fliege, Cosi and Malu try to treat him without reservation is hardly noticed by Niko. He is bored. But then, a violin worth a million dollar is stolen after a major concert, and not long after Niko is a suspect. Amadeus and his friends, the ‘Amadeus gang’, want to help Niko. But they are drawn into a wild, dangerous chase.
There is a great hustle and bustle at the Castle of Treuenfels: A museum is soon to be opened on the castle premises – with original manuscripts by Mozart, Brahms and Mahler! The Amadeus gang, too, have their hands full rehearsing for the big opening concert and surviving all exams unscathed. Even Igel works flat out to show his teachers what he can do. But then the Amadeus gang find out by chance that manuscripts from the collection of the new museum shall be sold off at an auction house. How can that be? Amadeus, Fliege, Niko, Cosi and Malu soon are certain that they have to be fakes!

An exciting time travel
Is there anyone who has not once wished to go time travelling and be in a different century in just a second? In this book, the two music-loving kids Clara and Frederik undertake an exciting journey through music history where they learn about different epochs: from classical antiquity to the present day. But how does one travel into the Stone Age? A time-travel machine may be helpful – but this is all that is revealed for now… After each journey through time the reader gets a lot of valuable and interesting information: Was there a kind of notation in ancient Egypt? Who was the first professional musician? What is the origin of the musical? The answers to these and other questions are given in boxes, tables, illustrations and photos. This edition also contains a quiz and amusing stories about great composers. So now, let’s start: Into which century do you want to journey?
From Absolute Pitch via ‘Blues’ to ‘Zither’ – this dictionary contains clear and suitable answers for children to questions on musical terms, genres and epochs, instruments, composers, interpreters, etc. The answers are given either in short, easily comprehensible articles or in the form of a dialogue between Clara and Frederik, two music-loving children who accompany the reader through the dictionary. The explanations on the origin of the words make the present book a work of reference that children like to consult and look at. The informative texts are complemented and illustrated by numerous music examples, phonetic transcriptions of foreign-language terms, as well as more than 200 photos and lovely four-colour illustrations. The explanations contain cross references, and a detailed index of more than 1,000 headwords enables the reader to find entries which are not explained in an extra article. Hans-Günter Heumann, born 1955 studied piano, music education and musicology at the Musikhochschule Hannover and composition in New York and New Orleans before becoming a piano teacher and composer focussing on the publication of educational piano literature. He is especially interested in imparting a sound knowledge of music and making a wide audience acquainted with it. Andreas Schürmann, born 1962 in Wuppertal, studied Fine Arts and Russian at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and at the Pushkin Institute in Moscow from 1982–1989. Since 1991 he has been working as an Arts and Russian teacher at the Gutenberg Gymnasium in Mainz.

Musical instruments and how to play them A guide to the orchestra for young and old alike 65 pages with CD – hardback With numerous photos and illustrations 15,0 x 21,0 cm € 19.95 ISBN 978-3-254-00001-9 · ATL 6001 ‘The whole range of percussion instruments can be compared to a magic kitchen. Like a good cook who is in great command of his spices and uses them effectively, the resourceful percussionist can create the most wonderful musical treats in his magic kitchen…’ – This is how Gerd Albrecht introduces his young and old readership to the orchestra in his book ‘Musical Instruments and how to play them’. He gives a comprehensible and illuminating account of the instruments’ history, construction features, sound generation, sound and playing technique. Which is the oldest instrument of the orchestra? Where is the set of timpani positioned on the stage? What is a ‘lemon mouth’ and what does that mean to a wind player? The answers to such questions are contained in this edition, complemented by graphic explanatory photos and humourous cartoons as well as by the accompanying CD introducing the sound of the individual orchestral instruments. In 1962, at the age of 27, Gerd Albrecht was the youngest German principal conductor in Lübeck. Later, he was principal conductor in Kassel, Berlin (Deutsche Oper), Zurich (Tonhalle), and Hamburg where he was principal conductor and opera director from 1988 to 1997. In 1991 the musicians of the Czech Philharmonic appointed him the first non-Czech principal conductor in the orchestra’s almost 100 year history. Since 1998 Gerd Albrecht has been principal conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. In 2000 he took over the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen. For more than thirty years he has been dedicating his work to young people. He has written children’s books, and conducted and presented 50 television films and records for children. All these questions and many others too are answered by Arnold Werner-Jensen in his music history book for children and young people in a concise and comprehensible way. This volume invites the reader to take an exciting and very readable walk through the history of Western music – from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The accompanying CD contains music examples from all epochs and musical genres.
This opera guide is written for children and young people, and also their parents and relatives. It contains concise, comprehensible information on all aspects of the opera. This edition describes the four-hundred-year-old history of the opera, the creation of an opera performance, as well as the opera house and the people working there. In addition, the reader is introduced to 40 operas – from Verdi’s ‘Aida’ to Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’ – which are suited to young opera-goers and are quite frequently performed at opera houses. The list of the dramatis personae is followed by a vivid summary of the contents, as well as by notes on the music, the genesis and significance of the work, and complemented by music examples written in simple keys so that they are easy to play. Black and white graphic illustrations by Reinhard Heinrich show selected scenes and introduce the reader to important characters of the story in typical costumes.

Carmina Burana von Carl Orff Genesis – Reception – Text Edited by Franz Willnauer 320 pages – paperback 40 illustrations 12,0 x 19,0 cm € 14.95 ISBN 978-3-254-08220-6 · SEM 8220 What music it must be, that it was always played when Henry Maske entered the boxing ring, music played at Michael Jackson’s stage shows, music still used for charity events and commercials? Understood and tolerated as a work of coded subversive character at the time of creation, misunderstood and met with hostility as musical evidence of the composer’s concurring beliefs seventy years later – nothing can prove the topicality of this seemingly ahistorical piece better than the unique phenomenon of its history of reception. Although the Latin texts make it difficult to understand Carmina Burana, they are among the most frequently played works in the world of music. Taking account of documentation by the composer, this book traces the genesis and reception of the work and discusses the growing popularity of Carmina Burana. Franz Willnauer, born in Enns/Austria in 1933, studied psychology, theatre studies and German studies before working in the publishing business and at several German theatres. From 1999 to 2003 he was director of the International Beethoven Festival in Bonn; before he held comparable positions at the Salzburg Festival (1985–1991) and at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (1995–1998).

The opera, probably the most spectacular and demanding of all art forms, undoubtedly holds its very own fascination for the operagoer, and many of them may ask how the often magnificent performances come about. This book reveals the secrets of the ‘stage’ and takes a look behind the scenes. It grants an insight into the complex work processes and the interplay of the different forces and factors that characterize the daily routine of the music theatre: from the business, artistic and literary directors via the artistic and technical staff, all sections and departments of an opera house are introduced to the reader. The description of the development of a new production shows the number of personnel as well as the expense and organisational and technical efforts that are required to ensure a successful opera performance. An informative guide to the work at an opera-house – not only for fans of the opera.
For the first time, the libretto of the ‘Magic Flute’ is interpreted within the intellectual and historical context of the late 18th century. In Perl’s study, Mozart and his librettist Schikaneder are revealed to be committed representatives of a radical late-Enlightenment movement, the ideology of the Illuminati, a secret society with the Viennese organisations of which Mozart maintained a close relationship. Because of rigorous censure, the authors had to disguise the work’s message: The ‘Magic Flute’ became a piece of allegorical theatre in which the acting characters impersonate the two irreconcilable forces of the clergy and the Illuminati. The original stage sets even showed a meeting place of the Society in Salzburg. Thus, this opera, when viewed with a new perspective, holds a mirror to the political events in the Austria of Emperor Francis Joseph.

Every summer for five weeks, the Eastern Franconian town of Bayreuth turns into the metropolis of festival music. Music lovers from all over the world pilgrimage to the Green Hill to enjoy performances of the works of Richard Wagner. But a visitor hardly thinks about the huge amount of time and effort involved. The highly praised ‘Bayreuth Workshop’ has always been a real workshop – including a carpenter, locksmith, dyer and festival smith. For Katharina Wagner, the composer’s great-granddaughter, this magic world was the playground of her childhood. Today, the ‘artistic cooperative’ forms the basis of her own productions. In this illustrated book, she and the photographer Enrico Nawrath take the opera lover on a journey behind the scenes of the festival theatre.
With the production of the ‘Ring’ by Tankred Dorst last year, the ‘Ring’ productions looked back on a history of 130 years. 14 productions by 12 directors (the brothers Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner staged two productions each) are proof of the inexhaustability of Richard Wagner’s opera tetralogy. Again and again, great opera directors (after the Wagner family itself) have taken on the colossal challenge of a production: from Patrice Chéreau and Peter Hall to Harry Kupfer and Jürgen Flimm. Unlike anywhere else in the world, Bayreuth is the place to study the context of its history and theatre aesthetics. Hence, a look into the history of the ‘Ring’ in Bayreuth is a look not only into the unique chronicle of the performance history of Richard Wagner’s greatest masterpiece but also into the history of the Bayreuth Festival, thus making this illustrated volume a unique document of opera history and a must-have for every Wagner fan.
Enrico Nawrath attended the Dresden Palucca School and the Berlin State Ballet School from 1988–1993 where he trained as a stage dancer. Since 1994 he has also worked as a photographer. 2006–2008 production photographer of the Berlin State Ballet. In 2008 photographer of the Bayreuth Festival. Katharina Wagner, born in Bayreuth in 1978, studied theatre arts in Berlin. From 1996 assistant director to Harry Kupfer and at the Bayreuth Festival. In 2002 debut as director, in 2007 first Bayreuth production under her direction (The Mastersingers).
Philippe Olivier, Alsatian writer, TV author and musicologist, was born in 1952. From 1975–1993 he worked as a producer with the broadcasting company France Musiques, from 1994–1998 as a marketing director with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and since April 2007 has been guest professor at the Rostock Hochschule für Musik und Theater. The ballet was an excellent export of the GDR. Classical dance and new artistic dance were in great demand all over the world due to excellent training centres and state funding. Embodying youth and innocence, they lent the system a human countenance. But like all spheres of life in the GDR, the dance theatre too was eyed by the Ministry of State Security, and the large number of IM [unofficial collaborator] files gives rise to the question as to whether the State Security Service had a particularly easy job here, at a place of artistic deception, play-acting and intrigue. With the help of documents from the Birthler Authority, the actions of persons involved and persons concerned are for the first time described in a comprehensible, yet oppressive way, without wanting to provoke any understanding for the actions of the responsible persons.
The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has not only seen and carried its share of the eventful history of its home town. Being one of the world’s most important concert orchestras, it has, in addition, become an excellent ambassador of culture. Herbert Haffner tells the story of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra – from its formation in 1882 out of the Bilsesche Kapelle (Bilse’s Band) via the period of inflation, two World Wars, the Berlin Airlift and the German reunification until the present day. Haffner does not conceal economic and personal crises, showing that the development of the orchestra mirrors the social and political circumstances of the time. The history of the Philharmonic Orchestra is marked, almost as strongly, by the continuous reorientation towards its principal conductors, from Hans von Bülow via Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado to Sir Simon Rattle. This is not just a book on music, but also an entertaining account of the cultural history of Germany and of the ever-changing city of Berlin!
Ralf Stabel studied theatre arts and choreography in Leipzig and did his PhD in Bremen on dance and politics. Professor of dance dramaturgy and dance history at the Dresden Palucca School and at the Berlin ‘Ernst Busch’ Academy of Dramatic Art. Today, he is director of the Berlin State Ballet School. His widely acclaimed Palucca biography was published by the Henschel Verlag in 2001.
Herbert Haffner lives in Freiburg/Breisgau and works as a freelance cultural journalist for numerous national and foreign newspapers, magazines and radio stations. He has published articles, books and broadcasts on the musical life of today and on the theatre from the 18th century to the modern age. 2003 saw the publication of his highly acclaimed biography on Furtwängler.

In addition, the original versions were followed by a large number of cover versions, re-recordings and arrangements by other famous performers and orchestras. In an entertaining and well-informed manner, Germany’s foremost expert on James Bond, Siegfried Tesche, recounts the exciting and sometimes odd story of the James Bond music themes, their performers as well as numerous anecdotes. Bond co-producer Harry Saltzman, for example, hated ‘Goldfinger’ by Shirley Bassey which was the reason why the song was almost not featured in the film. The fact that this song, of all soundtracks sold millions of copies probably greatly annoyed him. Siegfried Tesche, born in 1957, graduated in film studies and works as a freelance journalist for newspapers, radio and television companies. Out of enthusiasm for the British gentleman agent, he has amassed one of the largest Bond collections in the world and published several books on Bond.

Hugo Distler was one of the most important German composers of sacred and secular choral music in the first half of the 20th century. Born in 1908 and raised as an orphan, he created a vast oeuvre of choral and instrumental music within a few years. His ‘Mörike-Chorliederbuch’ forms part of the standard repertoire of major choirs throughout the world. The meteoric rise of Hugo Distler came to an end in 1942 when the 34-year-old committed suicide. Soon after, legends grew up around him: Some stylized him as a martyr to Nazi tyranny, others alleged that he had been involved in the Nazi movement as an accomplice. But what had actually happened then? Hugo Distler’s daughter Barbara has portrayed the story of his life in an authentic, yet very captivating way. With an introduction by Karl Corino.
When the conductor Paul Edmund Wunderlich notified the registrar of Kusel of the birth of his son Friedrich Otto in early October 1930, no one would have guessed that one of the greatest singing talents of the post-war period had been born. Within a few years, Wunderlich had conquered the opera houses and concert halls of Europe and was the most important German-speaking lyric tenor of his time. The biography by Werner Pfister was published again in a special edition to mark the 75th birthday of Fritz Wunderlich. Complemented by a CD which presents the most important stages of Wunderlich’s musical career, the publisher now offers this book as a special gift in honour of this great singer who died too soon.
Barbara Distler-Harth studied philosophy, political science and developmental psychology in Braunschweig and Munich. She published articles on issues of child development and the building of a human, democratic society. Barbara Distler-Harth has three grown-up children and lives in Munich as a freelance author.

550 pages – hardback with dust jacket 30 illustrations 17,0 x 24,5 cm € 29.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0598-5 · ED 20225
Paperback with CD 16,9 x 26,3 cm € 39.90 ISBN 978-3-7957-0476-6 · NZ 5003 ‘Nancarrow’s music is the greatest discovery since Webern and Ives.’ György Ligeti
For many people, Carlos Kleiber (1930–2004) is the most important conductor of the late 20th century. He was certainly the most problematic one. Having grown up with the burden of his dominant father Erich Kleiber, he struggled with his demand for perfection throughout his whole life. Being one of the most sought-after conductors, Carlos Kleiber did not accept any permanent appointment for years. His number of appearances was small and his official discography minimal, however, his charisma was legendary and he has a large number of fans. The guarantor of magic musical moments remained a mystery, though. His biographer Alexander Werner has tried to approach Kleiber, the man and artist, by finding out about the stages and stations of his life and questioning many of his contemporaries about the ‘secret of Kleiber’.
The American composer Conlon Nancarrow became famous for his complex compositions for player piano. In his Mexican exile he wrote an extremely original and at the same time emotional music which contributed to the further development of 20th-century music, beyond twelve-note technique and serialism. Jürgen Hocker accompanied Nancarrow in the last two decades of his life and now tells about Nancarrow’s stages as a composer and about his personality. The CD accompanying the book contains recordings of music by Nancarrow, some of them previously unreleased, as well as musico-historical recordings for mechanical pianos. With its combination of musicological work and biography, the present publication is aimed at both academics and a wide public interested in modern music. Press reviews:
Alexander Werner, born in Karlsruhe in 1961, studied literature and history. From 1991–1995 he worked as a trainee and editor with the Badische Neueste Nachrichten, from 1995 with Standpunkte, since 2000 as editor-in-chief with the Baden magazine Standpunkte with Chrismon plus. He has written numerous articles on classical music, interviews and CD reviews. The result of many years of research, taking numerous original interviews and unpublished documents into account.
‘… an impressive amount of biographical facts and authentic documents (…) which form a detailed picture… and not forgetting the accompanying CD which not only provides an excellent overview of Nancarrow’s oeuvre for player piano but also contains a few gems from the pioneer years of the self-playing piano.’ Peter Niklas Wilson in: Neue Zürcher Zeitung ‘… With his tricky pieces for mechanical piano, the composer and eccentric Conlon Nancarrow has made a significant contribution to the music history of the 20th century. It is due to a new book … that he is now discovered for the second time. … You can read Jürgen Hocker’s book while strolling, meeting scouts like René Block or Monika FürstHeidtmann in side streets, György Ligeti who praises him tirelessly and unselfishly in Europe (…) Charles Amirkhanian … or James Tenney …’ Konrad Heidtkamp in: DIE ZEIT/Musik

Leoš Janácˇek Biography 240 pages – paperback 12 x 19 cm € 14.95 ISBN 978-3-254-08412-5 · SEM 8412 No other composer stands for the lively blend of traditional and modern music as does Leoš Janácˇek. His œuvre is a fusion of national identity and universal humanism. Born in Moravia in 1854, Janácˇek did not become known beyond the borders of his small native country until the age of 60; but then he gained worldwide fame very quickly, particularly thanks to his operas Jenufa and Katya Kabanova, the Sinfonietta as well as chamber music works. His unique tonal language, close to the text, is immediately accessible to the listener but challenges him nevertheless. Today, Janácˇek’s compositions rank among the classics of modern music. With this book, Christoph Schwandt presents the first ‘handy’, yet comprehensive biography of the Czech composer in a lively and well-informed manner, which also takes a look at the historical and cultural background of that time and grants interested music lovers wide-ranging access to the life and work of Janácˇek. Christoph Schwandt, born in Bad Homburg in 1956, was employed at the theatres of Oldenburg, Bonn and Essen as well as at the Salzburg Festival in a managerial capacity. Since 2002 he has been literary director of the Opera of Cologne. As an author, he has published biographies of Georges Bizet and Giuseppe Verdi, among others.

‘Handbuch der Chorleitung’ contains profound and scientifically supported arguments for all choir conductors as to why people should sing in a choir and how self-enriching singing in a choir can be. It is a guide to sensible concert planning and organization as well as successful choir management. It deals with all central artistic issues in great detail, from proper conducting via effective rehearsing methods to intense musical interpretation, productive, yet pleasant voice training, the dramatic composition of a successful choir rehearsal and the preparation of choral pieces with instrumental accompaniment.
Do you also have the feeling that your choir could be a lot more spirited? That your singers cling to the notes and do not listen to each other enough? And that the audience actually should no longer bear to remain seated? If so, this comprehensive book on choral conducting for pop, jazz and gospel music contains the answers to these questions: Based on his wealth of experience in choral conducting, Martin Carbow discusses central issues such as rehearsing methods, choir work without notes, ear training and, above all, the groove in the choir. In addition to explaining technical terms, dealing with rhythmical problems and presenting exercises, he eventually also reveals his groove secrets. Christoph Schönherr explores the issue of vocal improvisation in choirs, the relationship of word and sound as well as the importance of conducting and the role of the choir director in the jazz and pop choir, among others. This book also provides information on further training courses for choir directors (and choirs), auditions, concerts, voice and voice training in popular music, accompaniment, arrangements, and many other aspects.

‘What do I do when I can’t produce the sound I would like?’ The book ‘Grundlagen der Kontrabass-Technik’ by Michael B. Wolf provides detailed answers to such questions. With the help of a detailed programme, the pupil will quickly learn the technical elements which are indispensable for artistic expression. Topics such as bowing technique, change of position, vibrato, right-left coordination, intonation or performance preparation are covered, taking into account the technical and intellectual aspects of generating the perfect sound. Although many techniques of this method represent a radical breach of tradition, they can be easily used for all double-bass methods and playing techniques.
Practising – or practise practising? Gerhard Mantel finds new, sometimes even unorthodox answers to the old question of how to practise. In this book the author describes the varied mental, psychological and physical aspects of the adventure of ‘practising’, while trying at the same time, in a widely diversified manner, to make individual instrumental problems accessible and thus available to the spontaneous artistic need of expression. In a new chapter of the revised and expanded edition, the author deals with the topic of ‘linking’: muscular or mental linking of two notes, spatial linking on the fingerboard, and linking inside the body.
Michael Barry Wolf, born in 1954 in the USA, is professor of double bass at the Berlin Universität der Künste. He studied music at the California State University and was member of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. His radio and disc recordings as well as numerous concert activities and master classes at home and abroad have always received great critical acclaim.
Gerhard Mantel was born in Karlsruhe in 1930. He began his musical training as a cellist in Heidelberg with Professor August Eichhorn and later continued his studies in Paris with Pierre Fournier, Paul Tortelier and André Navarra as well as with Pablo Casals and Maurice Gendron. Apart from numerous concerts all over the world, he performed in more than 100 radio and television productions as well as in numerous disc recordings. Professor Gerhard Mantel teaches at the Frankfurt Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst and holds master classes at home and abroad. The modern guitar method for young people and adults offers the recipe for success when it comes to melody playing, picking and chord accompaniment. It does not make a difference if you are an absolute beginner or if you already know a few chords. For with the pieces that you have always wanted to play, you also learn to play the guitar: plucking, melody and song accompaniment, and the major chords and rhythms with which you can play the best 50 folk and pop songs. The CD as a training partner guarantees a lot of fun and success: You can listen to the songs as they are supposed to sound. Fade out one of the channels! You then have 3 possibilities to play along: melody, picking or rhythm.
Dieter Kreidler’s new guitar method is aimed primarily at children and young people who want to learn to play the guitar in small steps. It contains numerous ensemble pieces and varied exercises for song accompaniment and is suited for both private and group lessons. Right from the beginning, the first experiences of ensemble playing are gained with the group. The method intentionally moves forward in small steps. The exercises and instrumental pieces of various styles are arranged in a progressive order and framed by inspiring illustrations, riddles, info boxes and creative exercises which stimulate the imagination and make the lessons a lot of fun. Vol. 1 of the new guitar method covers the basics of melody playing and song accompaniment on the guitar and introduces to ensemble playing. The accompanying guitar note finder makes it easy for the pupil to find the notes on the fingerboard in a playful way.
Rolf Tönnes, born in 1957, studied jazz guitar in Graz. He has published several guitar books and works as a lecturer at the Jazz-Haus-Schule in Cologne. Whereas the influence of modern guitarists can be detected in his ensemble playing, his solo playing is characterized by the influence of Joe Pass. Rolf Tönnes in one of the top guitarists of the jazz scene.
Dieter Kreidler is professor of guitar in Wuppertal and lecturer in further education at various music academies.

Mauz’ clarinet method (German and Böhm systems) is aimed at beginners and suitable for private and group lessons. It is published in three volumes plus a separate tune book each. The method’s easy comprehensibility, suitable selection of numerous songs as well as four-colour illustrations will appeal especially to clarinet pupils aged 8+. Since such a method does not exist in the German-language area yet, it fills that gap in the market and is a real addition to the Schneider clarinet method (ED 4466 and ED 8638/39) which is aimed at older pupils and adults. Vol. 1: Detailed treatment of the low register. Introduction to the dynamics and first overblowing. Vol. 2: Careful expansion of the tonal range (up to C’’’) and of the dynamics. Scales and triads up to 3# and 3b. Vol. 3: Expansion of times, keys, rhythms and of the tonal range. Major ornaments and the chromatic scale. The tune books of Mauz’ clarinet method are adjusted to the respective methods with regard to the tonal range, dynamics and articulation. They provide additional performance material for clarinet and piano as well as for 2 or 3 clarinets.

Step by Step Grundlagen der Trompetentechnik in 64 Etüden aus fünf Jahrhunderten 88 pages – paperback 23,1 x 30,3 cm € 14.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-9632-7 · ED 20194 This volume is a compendium of study literature from five centuries for the student, beginning with the first trumpet methods such as that of Fantini via the heyday of virtuoso literature in the early 20th century to the experimental playing techniques of our time. The book contains two exemplary studies of each composer which either can be considered to be typical of the respective style or put their focus on extraordinary technical or musical problems. All studies have been carefully revised, especially with regard to obvious typesetting mistakes of the original copies, and been rid of unnecessary ballast regarding phrasing and articulation. Malte Burba, born 1957, comes from a family of musicians, where the groundwork for his musical sensibility was laid at an early age. He studied trumpet, piano, musicology and music education. His supplementary studies of phonetics and medicine provided him with essential knowledge and an impetus for the development of his method and for the brilliant control and mastery of his instruments. His almost unlimited mastery of brass instruments gives him additional artistic leeway for the interpretation of classical, modern, contemporary and experimental music through the use of a wide range of instruments such as the various trumpets, the euphonium, alphorn, althorn and the didgeridoo. Not only does Malte Burba rank among the most interesting and versatile brass players of our time, he is also considered to be one of the best brass teachers worldwide. Many of his students play in leading orchestras or teach at major conservatories. One of the pillars of his pedagogy is the pioneering method developed by him for playing brass instruments which, in an absolutely logical manner, eliminates all technical and embouchure-related problems. He currently teaches at the Peter Cornelius-Konservatorium and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, and at the Conservatoire de Musique Luxembourg.

Suitable for both private and group lessons, it continuously brings the pupils from the very first lesson to lively music-making and a sound technical level. Vol. 1 of this method provides the basics, creating a tonal range from B to C’’ using the C major scale and triad. Other important elements of comprehensive teaching are simple improvisation, composing, musical interpretation and ear training. By including all major areas of learning, the pupils discover the ‘world of music’ with joy and imagination. And this is exactly the aim of this method: The children shall not just learn to play the trumpet but also develop into interested musicians. The complementary tune book 1 encourages joint music-making, helps the children to discover the joy of playing music and deepens the subject matter of the method. It contains songs, duos, trios and many settings with piano accompaniment. The level of difficulty is in tune with the structure of the method: In each piece it is indicated from which number in the trumpet method the 1st part can be played. The additional teacher’s edition supports the teachers by providing them with many suggestions and ideas for the planning and delivery of interesting lessons.

Over the course of the lessons, the pupils are deliberately addressed in a language that corresponds to their age. Furthermore, the method provides a stylistically varied range of classical and folkloristic instrumental pieces, and always gives a lot of interesting information on the music and its composers. Vol. 1: Detailed introduction to the bow hold – songs and instrumental pieces, using exclusively the first type of fingering while focussing on rhythmic, melodic and technical variety – playful touching and feeling of violin-playing techniques such as pizzicato, position playing, harmonics and double stops. Vol. 1 is accompanied by a CD (T 3272) containing all songs and pieces with funny dialogues spoken by children. A motivating addition to violin lessons and a great gift idea! Renate Bruce-Weber was born in Braunschweig in 1956. At the age of 7 she received her first violin lessons and won many prizes and scholarships, such as from the festival ‘Jugend musiziert’ and the Eastman School of Music at Rochester, USA. She studied violin with Professor Ludwig Müller-Gronau at the North West German Music Academy of Detmold and chamber music with Professor Wilhelm Isselmann. She taught violin at the Hamburg Conservatoire where she founded a children’s orchestra with which she gave many successful concerts. Since 2003 she has taught mainly children from Hamburg, St. Pauli in cooperation with primary schools in Hamburg.

Those who have already played the violin and use the method as a ‘way to change instruments’ may skip some pieces or even start with Vol. 2. Like ‘Die fröhliche Violine’, this book intends to make the children have fun while learning to play the viola. For this purpose, a stylistically varied range of classical and folkloristic songs and instrumental pieces encourage music-making, and small texts provide interesting information on the viola, the music and its composers. The viola is used both as a solo and as an accompanying instrument, and the ‘hearing’ and ‘counting’ of middle and lower lines are specifically trained. Due to the fact that many songs and secondary parts are notated in the treble clef and thanks to examples for trio and quartet playing, this book especially encourages ensemble playing with friends or within the family.

Play Piano By Ear 270 pages with CD – paperback 17,3 x 24,5 cm € 19.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-5519-5 · ED 9280 It is no secret that the majority of piano owners, in addition to playing classical music, would also like to play popular standards and pop songs, just like the piano player in a bar or cocktail lounge does, improvising and going from one tune to another. Here, finally, you have a new and simple method that will enable you to fulfill your secret wish to improvise at the piano, completely by ear. Simon Schott was born in Munich in 1917. After the Second World War he remained in Paris where he made ends meet, as he says himself, by playing the piano at third-class night clubs at Montmartre. One day, Harry McElhone, the owner of the then famous ‘Harry’s New York Bar’ in Paris, heard Simon Schott’s soft piano style and hired him on the spot. From then on, it was the world’s rich and famous who were among his audience. Ali Khan, Rita Hayworth, Humphrey Bogart, Coco Chanel, Ernest Hemingway and many others relaxed while he played his melodies, and talked to him. Before returning to Munich, he lived and worked in London for two years. Now, he has been playing the piano at the Kempinski hotel ‘Vier Jahreszeiten’ in Munich every evening from 5 – 8 p.m. for more than twenty years. He became known to a wide audience by TV and radio appearances, such as in the shows ‘NDR Talkshow’ or ‘Boulevard Bio’. The Bavarian Television made a documentary film about his life. In addition, he has found the time to write about twenty books – crime and science-fiction novels, books for young people and books on music. His romantic thriller ‘Das Bildnis der Alice Farnworth’ was awarded the ZDF prize ’Preis der Leseratten’.

Developed by Reinhard Flatischler in 1970, TaKeTiNa is a comprehensive method for learning and understanding rhythm. In the book, the author describes how the method has been developed, how it is structured and can be learnt. Focussing on rhythmic (in most cases combined) movements of the feet, hands (clapping) and voice, the method also uses drums and other rhythm instruments. The TaKeTiNa Explorer on the attached DVD enables the users to perceive rhythms visually and acoustically and program their own rhythms – from simple to very complex patterns. TaKeTiNa offers a theory and methodology of rhythm for the people of today – for musical amateurs and professional musicians as well as for music therapists, social educators and managers.
A novel combination of DVD and book, this volume presents for the first time issues pertaining to vocal techniques and interpretation in word, picture and sound. DVD clips provide insights into the working method of the renowned tenor Christoph Prégardien who can be seen in his lessons with students of his master classes. In addition, the singer and teacher Hedwig Fassbender deals with specific problems for the female voice; the pianists Michael Gees and Andreas Staier talks about accompanying singers. Professionals, amateurs, students and lovers of classical singing are provided with a plethora of important and valuable information. In the book, Christoph Prégardien deals with further questions on programming, correct practising and warm-ups, concert preparations and voice problems, among others. This innovative product is complemented by a detailed discography of Christoph Prégardien as well as bibliographical references and recommendations.
Reinhard Flatischler was born in Austria and successfully holds TaKeTiNa workshops and performances in America, Germany, Austria, etc. throughout the entire year.

Carolan’s Dream 15 Stücke für Flöte (Violine) und Klavier 44 pages with CD– paperback 23,1 x 30,3 cm € 17.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-5859-2 · ED 20201 Unlike any other, Turlough O’Carolan (1670–1738) knew how to combine old Irish music with Italian Baroque music which the high society liked to listen to at that time. The use of little repeating motifs, the kind of melody and way of tension building reveal Carolan’s sense and knowledge of the styles of playing typical of the Baroque period. These Baroque influences in his harp music became his unmistakable trademark. Thus, he created a whole new genre, as it were: the Celtic Classics. Turlough O’Carolan was born in 1670 in Nobber, co. Westmeath, Ireland. He was taken under the patronage of Mrs. MacDermott Roe of Alderford to be educated. However at the age of 18 he was blinded by smallpox, and so his patron stopped his education and instead had him sent to be trained as a harper for three years. Upon his finishing his musical training at the age of 21 she provided him with a horse, a guide and some money, to start him on his career as an itinerant harper. Carolan built a successful career as a harper, winning many patrons both Irish and English, Protestant and Catholic. He himself was Catholic and composed music for the church. However only one of his sacred pieces is known to have survived, ‘The Elevation’. Carolan married Mary Maguire from Fermanagh; they had six daughters and one son. Mary died in 1733 and Turlough died in Alderford in 1738. Wolfgang Löll was born in Wetzlar an der Lahn in 1961. At an early age he took lessons there with the post-Romantic composer, pianist and conductor Gustav Adolf Schlemm (1902– 1987). At music college in Frankfurt he trained to teach music in secondary schools; he also studied musicology and English at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. Patrick Steinbach was born in Hamburg in 1964 to an Irish mother and a German jazz musician father. He trained as a music teacher in Frankfurt am Main and now teaches guitar at various music schools. Besides playing the guitar, he also plays the banjo and mandolin and is an enthusiastic collector of songs. He has edited numerous tutorial volumes of Irish folk tunes for the guitar and organises workshops based on Irish music. Patrick Steinbach is a guitarist, composer and arranger of Irish music in particular: with numerous journeys to his second homeland he has made a name for himself as a connoisseur of all things Irish and a specialist in folk music. His book of Irish reels won a major German music publishing prize in 2005.

Let’s swing, Mr. Diabelli! 14 Jazzy Pieces for Piano Duet 40 pages with CD – paperback 23,1 x 30,3 cm € 13.95 ISMN 979-0-001-16957-8 · ED 20718 The success story of Diabelli’s ‘Melodic Exercises’ Op. 149 for piano duet has lasted now for almost 200 years. They are beautiful melodies covering a range of only five tones, perfectly suitable for beginners, with refined and brilliantly designed accompanying settings in the Secondo part. To this day, the pieces are very popular among pupils, teachers and music lovers. Diabelli, born in 1781, was not only a respected piano teacher and composer in Vienna, but also a busy music publisher and friend of Ludwig van Beethoven who jokingly called him ‘my diabolus’ from time to time. Sometimes he sent themes composed by himself to the then famous composers, asking them to write and return to him some variations on these themes. This led to the creation of the famous Diabelli Variations by Beethoven, a demanding piano work which is performed in the concert halls all over the world still today. Hopefully, Mr. Diabelli would not mind some of his wonderful five-tone melodies being transported into the world of swing, samba and other forms of expression, as has been done in this volume. Apart from some arranged melodies from opus 149, this volume also contains a few newly arranged pieces, all of them inspired by Diabelli’s idea to make music with five fingers as varied as possible. The original arrangement of the keys has been maintained. New inspiration for piano lessons and fourhanded piano playing!

These anthologies contain original compositions by nineteenthcentury composers. Several of the pieces are available for the first time as part of a graded collection. The repertoire includes works by major composers, such as Chopin and Schumann, as well as lesser-known pieces by, amongst others, Bortkiewicz and Rimsky-Korsakov. These collections are ideal for piano teachers looking for additional repertoire for their teaching practice. Nils Franke has held scholarships and awards at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the University of Reading and the Royal Academy of Music. After the completion of his studies he pursued a dual career in performance and music education. As a pianist, he has specialized in 19th-century piano music, particularly Liszt, and recorded chamber music by Bortkiewicz and Rachmaninov for Warner Apex (2005). He regularly plays piano quintets with his ensemble, performing a broad range of music from Boccherini to Messiaen. As an educator, he has taught piano extensively, worked as a mentor on professional development courses for instrumental teachers and is now Director of the BA (Ed) music specialism and MTPP (Music Teaching in Professional Practice) at the University of Reading, UK.

This collection contains pieces of varying degrees of difficulty (easy to moderate) from three centuries of music. It includes several enchanting and little-known miniatures which, as a collection, should be a welcome addition to the advanced guitar repertoire, both for tuition purposes and concert performance.
‘Romantic Guitar Anthology’ Vol. 1 is a graded repertoire book suitable for students of ca. 2–3 years of playing experience. Standard teaching pieces by the 19th century’s leading composer-guitarists Carulli, Giuliani and Sor are presented alongside rarely available works by Jaime Bosch, Johann Kaspar Mertz and Franz Tu ek. Also includes original guitar pieces by Berlioz and Paganini.
Konrad Ragossnig was born in Klagenfurt on 6 May 1932. From 1954–1957 he studied guitar with Karl Scheit at the Vienna Musikhochschule. In 1961 he won the Concours International de Guitare which marked the beginning of his international career as a guitarist and lutenist. Together with Julian Bream, Konrad Ragossnig helped the lute grow in popularity in the 1970s. Being one of the most important guitarists of the 20th century, he put his main focus on chamber music with non-guitarists. Konrad Ragossnig has recorded more than 60 records and performed in numerous radio and television productions. From 1964–1983 Ragossnig taught at the Basel Music Academy. In 1983 he succeeded Karl Scheit as professor at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts where he taught until 2002. In addition, he worked as a guest professor at the Zurich Musikhochschule and held master classes in Europe, the USA and Japan from 1989 to 1997. Among the numerous awards and distinctions he received is the Austrian Honorary Cross for Science and Arts, 1st class in 2003.
Romantic Guitar Anthology Vol. 2 is a graded repertoire book suitable for students of around 4 years of playing experience. Standard teaching pieces by the 19th century’s leading composer-guitarists Coste and Sor are presented alongside more rarely available works by Jaime Bosch, Franz Tucek and José Vinas. Original pieces by Berlioz and Paganini are included, as are carefully selected transcriptions of works by Rossini, Schumann and Johann Strauss. Composer biographies and extensive teaching notes on each piece are included together with a CD recording of all of the works in the anthology, performed by Jens Franke.

Classic meets Jazz 20 berühmte klassische Themen, Original + jazzige Bearbeitung Vol. 1 90 pages with CD – paperback 23,1 x 30,3 cm € 19.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-5847-9 · ED 20177 Vol. 2 80 pages with CD – paperback 23,1 x 30,3 cm € 19.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0641-8 · ED 20537 This volume contains a wide selection of famous musical themes from Bach to Carl Orff. Some of them were originally written for the piano; most have had their scores carefully arranged to make them easy to play on the piano. Each piece is followed with a jazz interpretation, which can either be played alone or alongside the ‘original’ version. Perhaps this will show that the ‘classics’ are not all that far removed from jazz, and that music of earlier periods contains many of the essential characteristics of jazz. Doesn’t Lully‘s ‘Gavotte’, for instance, contain one of the most famous jazz themes ever? The ‘Blue Gavotte’ may make this clearer. The theme from Mozart’s Sonata in A major (K 331) doesn’t require many rhythmic changes to give it a blues flavour (‘Mozart Goes Blues’). The driving rhythm of the ostinato bass in Carl Orff’s ‘O Fortuna’ would suit modern jazz-rock performers well, with a few small changes (‘A Fortune for a Tune’). What do Bizet’s ‘Habanera’, Brahms’ ‘Hungarian Dance No. 5’ and Paganini’s ‘Caprice No. 24’ have in common? Why have they been turned into salsa music (‘Habanera con Cigarro’, ‘Hungarian Salsa No. 5’, ‘Capriccio Latino’)? Much of this is up to the individual: if you want to discover similarities, they are easy to find. It is difficult to convey a jazz interpretation through musical notation alone, so a CD has been included - not to demonstrate the only possible interpretation, but to offer ideas and suggestions.

Discovering Orff 225 pages – paperback € 44.95 ISBN 978-0-930448-99-8 · SMC 99 This book is intended for those who want detailed, practical assistance in how and why to use Orff techniques and materials in the classroom. Goals are outlined and the best ways to achieve them are explored, but the principal focus is on the arrangement of the curriculum in a logical sequence. Such a structure provides a reasonable progression from simple to more complex objectives not only from day to day but from year to year. Structured learning need not be the enemy of improvisation but rather the best way to provide students with the tools they need to improvise. The book contains an introduction to the development of OrffSchulwerk and a discussion of the distinguishing features of this approach. Chapter Two introduces the activities children use in their music-making. The teaching procedure that structures those activities is taken up in Chapter Three while Chapter Four explains the vocabulary and accompaniment theory essential to the Orff teacher. Part Two applies these elements in a sequential curriculum designed for Grades One through Five. Especially important in each chapter is the inclusion of supporting activities designed to aid in teaching the various skills and concepts.

The magical sounds of these instruments are available to everyone – even without special training. However, a step-by-step approach to mallet instruments encourages instrumental facility and promotes beautiful sounds. Playing Together is the first book to offer the systematic guidance you need to help your students develop mallet skills with ease.
‘Elementaria’ is a fundamental and practical handbook to OrffSchulwerk . The author gives suggestions and examples without insisting dogmatically on one exclusive method. She offers well-tried solutions without excluding other possibilities and individual variations. It is not only a valuable personal document, but also a practical and essential guide for educationalists concerned with Orff-Schulwerk. The book is divided into two sections: Part One includes rhythmic, melodic and speech exercises. Part Two contains a detailed study of elementary movement training. There is an important appendix, with illustrations, on how to play the instruments used in the early stages of teaching. This book also contains music examples, movement diagrams and illustrations.
In this book you will find a sequenced program for building instrumental technique that begins with sound effects, proceeds to playing accompaniments, and – finally – melodies. Skills are introduced in a carefully sequenced presentation of authentic and artistic musical materials: folk melodies, Renaissance music, composed pieces, and standard Orff literature. Three Orff master teachers have also provided a classroom reality check for these materials, offering suggestions to encourage skillful playing and enjoyment.

While Orff training is helpful, it is not a prerequisite for classroom application of the music in this book. You can achieve success if you are able to play the recorder, respect the ranges and colors of the instruments, and acknowledge the inestimable contribution of instruments toward building musicianship in your students.

Volume 3 of ‘Documentation, His Life and Works’, an eightvolume autobiography of Carl Orff, published by Hans Schneider, Tutzing, Germany. A unique personal history of Schulwerk, from the early days in 1923 when Carl Orff came under the influence of Dorothee Günther, Mary Wigman and Gunild Keetman, to the ‘Symposium Orff-Schulwerk 1975’ in Salzburg which crowned a lifetime devoted to Schulwerk – ‘an idea that went around the world’. Carl Orff’s fascinating reminiscences on people and events concerned with Schulwerk, the evolution of his instrumentarium, early publications, and the development of Schulwerk on an international basis are accompanied by music examples and many historical photographs.
Teacher and performer Doug Goodkin presents an overview of the dynamic approach to music education known as Orff Schulwerk. In this comprehensive look at the many facets of this timeless practice, the author hopes to re-imagine its import in the lives of children, schools and culture at large in contemporary times. ‘Carl Orff’s educational ideas could not have an advocate more well equipped by fortune and disposition. Inspired initially by Avon Gillespie, who embodied playing, singing and dancing, Doug Goodkin also brings to his teaching a first-hand, intensive experience of the indigenous music and dance of many continents and peoples.’ Margaret Murray
Carl Orff was born in Munich on 10 July 1895. From 1913 to 1914, he studied composition at the Munich Akademie der Tonkunst with Anton Beer-Walbrunn and from 1915 to 1919 he worked as musical director at the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Mannheim Nationaltheater and the Darmstadt Landestheater. Continuing his studies of composition with Heinrich Kaminski in 1921, Orff began to occupy himself intensely with Bach, Buxtehude, Pachelbel and in particular Monteverdi. Having been involved in the foundation of the ‘Günther-Schule’ for gymnastics, music and dance (1924), he became director of the department of ‘tänzerische Musikerziehung’ [music and dance education]. One of Orff’s major achievements was the ‘Orff-Schulwerk / Music for Children’, an educational method for children, published from 1930 to 1935. Spreading with an astonishing rapidity and intensity around the world, it is still successfully used (in pedagogy and therapy as well). Leading a master class for musical and dramatical composition at the Munich Hochschule für Musik from 1950 to 1960, he was appointed director of the new Orff Institute at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1961.

Orff-Schulwerk is not a method that should be followed page by page; it is a collection of material that invites original arrangements or variations and the composition of complementary and contrasting material. It mirrors a vision of an education which considers music and dance not as a ‘fringe programme’ but essential for our entire being. These media ‘...are, in all world cultures, as important for survival as water and air. Animal Cracker Suite is a set of four original poems arranged for speech chorus, body percussion, and percussion ensemble. Twenty-one additional original poems are included for teachers and students to make their own musical settings.
Organized in two sections: Section One provides a series of rhythmic and musical preparations in mixed and irregular meters (with emphasis on 7/8, based on excerpts from The Raccoon Philosopher). Ideas are explored for studying specific meters to be moved, played and sung within the mini-musical. Extensions are suggested for other curricular uses under ‘interdisciplinary connection.’ Section Two is the complete mini-musical, The Raccoon Philosopher, which embraces mixed and irregular meter concepts, along with playing, singing, moving and creating. This section also includes staging and costuming suggestions, speech play, songs, movement/choreography ideas and Orff orchestrations. In both sections, true to the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy, it is the authors’ intent that the process be engaging and open-ended, and that it be treated as importantly as the materials that are provided. Students and teachers are invited not only to enjoy the mini-musical suggestions, but also to revel in the preparatory work where their ideas may ultimately enhance and enliven the final performance.

It is written for pre-school and primary teachers working with children aged 4–9, for music teachers and for teachers working with groups of mixed ability. It aims to widen the repertoire of songs, topics and related activities, to enjoy the experience of singing, moving and playing instruments together as well as to stimulate one’s own creativity to invent new extensions. The wide range of activities for each song enables teachers to work with children of different ages and abilities ensuring that no one is over- or under-challenged and that each child can learn, play and contribute to the whole on his or her own level.
This folksong collection provides models of arrangements to be taught using the Orff Schulwerk approach. The arrangements may be taught as printed or used as the basis for creative extensions – or both – and the accompanying teaching suggestions give examples of how to break down instrumental parts and sequence their presentation developmentally. Dance or play-party instructions are also given for some songs. David J. Gonzol is Director of Music Education at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The works represent a wide variety of styles that draw upon the musical models of the Orff-Schulwerk for inspiration. Along with each piece is a detailed teaching procedure designed to give music educators a collection of instructional techniques that can be used in all aspects of their work. A ‘Process Teaching Toolbox’ organises these techniques by musical element.
A selection of songs, games, dances, stories and instrumental pieces from the Spanish-speaking countries of Central and South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela. This book presents a rich and varied selection of material from an immense geographical area, combining local traditions with foreign elements and influences to engage and inspire teachers and students. A DVD with practical demonstrations of the dances will help teachers present these materials in the classroom.
