Everyone can listen to music, of course, but the enjoyment of it can be greatly enhanced – no matter what music one likes to listen to. Das MusikHörBuch shows you how to do that, explaining in an easily understandable language: • the most refined methods to select the appropriate music for any occasion • the best strategy to develop your own musical preferences • the most important tricks to enhance the pleasure of listening to music • the most frequent mistakes occurring in listening to music and how to avoid them Whether on musical journeys, time travels and music-tasting events, whether listening with the imaginary stethoscope or discovering the ‘anatomy’ of a music piece – the reader is granted new and unexpected insights into the cosmos of music and thus into his or her very own world of listening.
This book answers the question ‘What is musical?’, covering all aspects of the modern genre of music theatre and describing, in an international context and for the first time in this much detail, the development, the heyday, the industry, the flops and the opportunities for the musical. From The Black Crook and the Ziegfeld Follies via George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim to The Producers; from the American Operetta to the Concept Musical, this handbook offers an insight into all the different types and forms. In addition to the synopses, the entries contain information about the first nights, ensemble, voice categories, orchestration, detailed commentaries in addition to numerous illustrations, references to further readings and multimedia. A must-have for all musical lovers!

‘Handbuch der Chorleitung’ contains profound and scientifically supported arguments for all choir conductors as to why people should sing in a choir and how self-enriching singing in a choir can be. It is a guide to sensible concert planning and organization as well as successful choir management. It deals with all central artistic issues in great detail, from proper conducting via effective rehearsing methods to intense musical interpretation, productive, yet pleasant voice training, the dramatic composition of a successful choir rehearsal and the preparation of choral pieces with instrumental accompaniment.
Do you also have the feeling that your choir could be a lot more spirited? That your singers cling to the notes and do not listen to each other enough? And that the audience actually should no longer bear to remain seated? If so, this comprehensive book on choral conducting for pop, jazz and gospel music contains the answers to these questions: Based on his wealth of experience in choral conducting, Martin Carbow discusses central issues such as rehearsing methods, choir work without notes, ear training and, above all, the groove in the choir. In addition to explaining technical terms, dealing with rhythmical problems and presenting exercises, he eventually also reveals his groove secrets. Christoph Schönherr explores the issue of vocal improvisation in choirs, the relationship of word and sound as well as the importance of conducting and the role of the choir director in the jazz and pop choir, among others. This book also provides information on further training courses for choir directors (and choirs), auditions, concerts, voice and voice training in popular music, accompaniment, arrangements, and many other aspects.
Hans-Günther Bastian has been professor of music education and systematic musicology at the universities of Bonn, Paderborn and Frankfurt/Main since 1980. ‘What do I do when I can’t produce the sound I would like?’ The book ‘Grundlagen der Kontrabass-Technik’ by Michael B. Wolf provides detailed answers to such questions. With the help of a detailed programme, the pupil will quickly learn the technical elements which are indispensable for artistic expression. Topics such as bowing technique, change of position, vibrato, right-left coordination, intonation or performance preparation are covered, taking into account the technical and intellectual aspects of generating the perfect sound. Although many techniques of this method represent a radical breach of tradition, they can be easily used for all double-bass methods and playing techniques.
Practising – or practise practising? Gerhard Mantel finds new, sometimes even unorthodox answers to the old question of how to practise. In this book the author describes the varied mental, psychological and physical aspects of the adventure of ‘practising’, while trying at the same time, in a widely diversified manner, to make individual instrumental problems accessible and thus available to the spontaneous artistic need of expression. In a new chapter of the revised and expanded edition, the author deals with the topic of ‘linking’: muscular or mental linking of two notes, spatial linking on the fingerboard, and linking inside the body.
Michael Barry Wolf, born in 1954 in the USA, is professor of double bass at the Berlin Universität der Künste. He studied music at the California State University and was member of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. His radio and disc recordings as well as numerous concert activities and master classes at home and abroad have always received great critical acclaim.
Gerhard Mantel was born in Karlsruhe in 1930. He began his musical training as a cellist in Heidelberg with Professor August Eichhorn and later continued his studies in Paris with Pierre Fournier, Paul Tortelier and André Navarra as well as with Pablo Casals and Maurice Gendron. At the age of 21, Gerhard Mantel was solo cellist in Bergen (Norway) and two years later became solo cellist at the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne. Apart from numerous concerts all over the world, he performed in more than 100 radio and television productions as well as in numerous disc recordings. Professor Gerhard Mantel teaches at the Frankfurt Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst and holds master classes at home and abroad. In addition, he is honorary president of the German section of the European String Teachers’ Association (ESTA) and founded and is head of the ‘Forschungsinstitut für Instrumental- und Gesangspädagogik e.V.’.
