Born in 1900 and 1901 as direct descendants of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, they soon became notorious in Berlin for their extravagant appearance, their excessive lifestyle and their friendships and affairs with some of the great figures of their time, such as Max Reinhardt, Arturo Toscanini, Vladimir Horowitz and Gustaf Gründgens. The Mendelssohn siblings also made a lasting impression on the art world – Francesco as a musician and theatre director, Eleonora as a celebrated theatre actress. The takeover of the Nazis put an end to their hitherto careless way of life: their emigration to the United States proved to be a dead end for both their professional careers and private lives.

Thomas Blubacher, born in 1967 in Basel, Switzerland, holds a doctorate degree in theatre studies. He works as a director at theatres in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United States and has published, amongst other books, a monograph on Gustaf Gründgens. Blubacher has also written articles for newspapers like Aufbau, DIE ZEIT and Süddeutsche Zeitung and was the author of several radio features. In 2002 he was writerin-residence at the Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades (USA).

William Forsythe is one of outstanding choreographers of the present time. Like only George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham before him, he has developed his own characteristic sensitivity for the dance. Jo Ann Endicott has been a dancer and assistant of Pina Bausch, founder and artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, since the very beginning. Waiting for Pina is Endicott’s very personal account of her work with Bausch und her famous dance theatre company. She describes her life as a passionate dancer, wife and mother in a very humorous and lively way, without omitting the difficulties and drawbacks of her profession: aging, unemployment, the exhausting balancing act between work and family, and the dependence on the company and the choreographer. Jo Ann Endicott was born in 1950 in Sydney, Australia. In 1973 she was asked by Pina Bausch to join her newly-founded dance theatre company in Wuppertal. As a principal dancer she heavily influenced Bausch’s early pieces. She left the company in 1987, but returned in 1994 as a guest dancer, rehearsal supervisor and Bausch’s assistant and has remained in that position ever since.

304 pages – paperback 2 DVDs 30 b/w images 21 x 27 cm € 19.90 In 2005, the German Federal Cultural Foundation initiated Tanzplan Deutschland, providing it with 12.5 million Euros to develop a wide range of measures that would ensure the highest levels of sustainability for dance until 2010. Nine German cities are part of ‘Tanzplan local’. They provide services ranging from working with children and young people through the creation of new dance study programmes, touring guest performance programmes and interdisciplinary symposia, up to new residencies for young choreographers. As part of the Tanzplan Educational Programme, the ‘1st Dance Education Biennale’, involving all 11 state-run dance colleges, was held in HAU/Berlin in the spring of 2008, which will be followed by a second biennale in 2010 in Essen. Besides, inter-university workshops are organised, an E-Learning programme at the Salzburg University as well as the new multimedia project of William Forsythe (‘Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced’) were supported and recently a research project on the methods of contemporary dance techniques started, which will result in a publication.

This publication will be sustained by the most important national and international dance colleges who are going to examine the different methods or techniques of modern, post-modern and contemporary dance (José Limón, Trisha Brown, JoosLeeder, Jennifer Muller, Anouk Van Dijk, etc). They follow the questions: a) Body image/movement: What is bodily trained? b) Body concept/ideology: What kind of aesthetics are being transported? c) Methodology/didactics: Which concepts of communication and working practices are taught? d) Historical context: How can the method or technique be classified within dance history?

2 DVDs will show examples of basic trainings in all techniques.

Ingo Diehl and Friederike Lampert, the editors in charge, are both dancers, dance teachers and dance researchers.

Never had the work of an artist been attacked as fiercely during his lifetime as that of Joseph Beuys. A lot of legends have grown up around his person and his work, legends through which art historians try to explain his unconventional oeuvre and his character. The author has verified the truthfulness of these myths and lets twenty Beuys experts as well as friends and relatives of the artist get a word in. The photos of this illustrated book show Beuys neither as an artificial character nor as fat fetishist. They rather show scenes of a many-faceted artist's life and show him in private – as a person.

The Bauhaus was founded 90 years ago. To mark this anniversary, E. A. Seemann publishes the first Bauhaus Encyclopaedia, which brings all topics of this unique art college together. It features about 500 entries, which are connected through systematic references. This edition provides information on architecture, design, colour, theatre and educational theory as well as biographical information on the Bauhaus teachers and students from 1919 to 1933. Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a living legend. Ever since the movie ‘Frida’ was released in 2002, she has been known to a broad audience worldwide.

Pablo Picasso, Leo Trotzky, Heinz Berggruen, André Breton, Tina Modotti and Georgia O’Keeffe were just a few of her many admirers.

She immortalized a lot of these names in her private address book, which is now released for the first time. It unfolds the private cosmos of the Mexican artist before the eyes of the reader. The abundance of material strikingly shows how much Frida Kahlo, in spite of her own hardship, loved life itself and the people surrounding her – men and women alike.

The editor, Hajo Düchting, was born in 1949. He studied art history, philosophy and archaeology and got his PhD in 1981. Since 1984, he has worked as a lecturer at different universities. He is the author of various publications about Modern Art, didactics of art and the theory of colour.

The author, Christine Fischer-Defoy, works in Berlin as an historian, a writer and a film producer on topics like Nazi persecution, German resistance and exile. She has already published the private address books of Heinrich Mann, Walter Benjamin and Hannah Arendt.

After research projects in Florence, New York and Berkeley, she worked as an arts editor of ‘Bunte’ from 1999.
