Joseph Haydn is rightly regarded as a composer of epochmaking significance: Not only did he set standards in the fields of symphonic and chamber music, but his oratorios too are considered to be outstanding contributions to the genre. In his monograph which became a standard work long ago, Karl Geiringer takes a look at both Haydn’s life and work. As a consequence, this edition is of interest not only to lovers of Haydn’s music but also to readers generally interested in music history. An updated bibliography has been added to this new edition, as well as a preface written by the renowned Haydn expert Armin Raab.

Today, more than ever, Gustav Mahler is highly acclaimed as a ‘pioneer of new music’. Unlike any other composer in the late 19th century, he meteorically became the focus of attention of the musical public. Mahler’s music is an adventure, as beautiful and frightening, as peaceful and unpredictable as the world of which it is about. During his lifetime, Gustav Mahler was known rather as a powerful court opera director and less as a composer, for he could compose his own works only during the summer months. But as such, Mahler had to compete with his fellow composers Anton Bruckner and Richard Strauss. In his newly edited book, Karl-Josef Müller tries to examine this discrepancy between Mahler’s high ethical demands as a composer and his qualification by his environment.

He spent almost his whole life in Paris, his home town. He never was in Spain. And yet, Bizet’s Carmen is regarded as the epitome of Spanish opera. But the composer did not live to see its overwhelming success around the world. Exactly three months after the world premiere in March 1875 he died at the age of only 36 years. Even today, his remarkable overall oeuvre is eclipsed by this singular masterpiece. Published in 1991 for the first time, the biography of Christoph Schwandt still is the only one available in German. The standard work which includes important research results and findings from the second half of the 20th century is now published in an updated and expanded edition.

No other composer stands for the lively blend of traditional and modern music as does Leoš Janácek. His oeuvre is a fusion of national identity and universal humanism. Born in Moravia in 1854, Janácek did not become known beyond the borders of his small native country until the age of 60; but then he gained worldwide fame very quickly, particularly thanks to his operas Jenufa and Katya Kabanova, the Sinfonietta as well as chamber music works. His unique tonal language, close to the text, is immediately accessible to the listener but challenges him nevertheless. Today, Janácek’s compositions rank among the classics of modern music. With this book, Christoph Schwandt presents the first ‘handy’, yet comprehensive biography of the Czech composer in a lively and well-informed manner, which also takes a look at the historical and cultural background of that time and grants interested music lovers wide-ranging access to the life and work of Janácek.

Christoph Schwandt, born in Bad Homburg in 1956, held leading positions at various theatres as well as at the Salzburg Festival. From 2002-2009 he worked as literary director of the Opera of Cologne. As an author, he has published biographies of Giuseppe Verdi and Leos Janácek among others.

Die Jahre in Rom und Tivoli

Ein Leben in Bildern

224 pages – hardcover with dust jacket 23,0 x 30,0 cm € 49.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0715-6 · ED 20860

160 pages – hardback with dust jacket with ca. 300 illustrations 34,0 x 30,0 cm € 49.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0713-2 · ED 20854

Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century and one of the most important composers of his era, is regarded as an unusually charismatic personality. Whereas the years in which Liszt travelled around Europe as a celebrated piano virtuoso or worked in Weimar as composer and kapellmeister are well known and documented, the 25 years (1861-86) spent in Rome and Tivoli have been neglected up to now. This richly illustrated pictorial history describes for the first time in great detail the life and work of Liszt in the ‘Eternal City’ where he turned towards Catholicism and where he created his radical late works. At the same time, the numerous documentary pictures most of which have previously been unpublished create an impressive portrait of 19th-century Rome. With a foreword and CD by Alfred Brendel.

Mikis Theodorakis is one of the most famous figures in recent Greek history. The self-declared ‘Cretan, Greek and European’ stands out not only due to his very varied musical oeuvre which ranges from symphonic music via film classics such as Zorba the Greek to numerous Greek folksongs but also due to his political commitment, e.g. as voice against the Greek military dictatorship. Regardless of all social circumstances, his main interest has always been the music. This illustrated book portrays the life of Theodorakis. Apart from documenting his various creative periods as a composer, hundreds of photos and numerous unpublished statements of Mikis Theodorakis and his companions provide an insight into this eventful life between music and politics.

Ernst Burger, born in 1937, lives in Munich as a pianist and author. With his award-winning documentary biographies about Liszt, Chopin and Schumann, he has made a name for himself as an outstanding chronicler of the 19th century.

‘Nancarrow’s music is the greatest discovery since We-

Heitor Villa-Lobos is regarded as one of the most important and internationally most successful composers of Latin America. His comprehensive oeuvre combines traditional Brazilian with European art music in a manyfaceted way. Despite all this, his music has more or less been ignored in German-language literature until today. This gap is now closed by the present monograph which is at the same time a comprehensive study of cultural trends in Brazil of the first half of the 20th century. For the first time, the national traditions that influenced VillaLobos are documented in great detail and related to his compositional oeuvre. A monograph that combines biographical facts with information on the cultural and contemporary history of Villa-Lobos’ home country in a fascinating way.

bern and Ives.’ György Ligeti The American composer Conlon Nancarrow became famous for his complex compositions for player piano. In his Mexican exile he wrote an extremely original and at the same time emotional music which contributed to the further development of 20th-century music, beyond twelve-note technique and serialism. Jürgen Hocker accompanied Nancarrow in the last two decades of his life and now tells about Nancarrow’s stages as a composer and about his personality. The CD accompanying the book contains recordings of music by Nancarrow, some of them previously unreleased, as well as musico-historical recordings for mechanical pianos. With its combination of musicological work and biography, the present publication is aimed at both academics and a wide public interested in modern music.

Marek Janowski Atmen mit dem Orchester

Biography

456 pages – hardback with dustjacket 13,5 x 21,5 cm € 17.95 ISBN 978-3-7957-0675-3 · ED 20665

800 pages – softcover 30 illustrations 12,0 x 19,0 cm € 17.95 ISBN 978-3-254-08416-3 · SEM 8416

Marek Janowski is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the classical German orchestra culture. With an unerring ear, clear movements and instinctive musical intelligence, he transforms complex scores into expressive interpretations. To him, precision is the prerequiste for spirited music-making. In this authorized biography, Wolfgang Seifert for the first time portrays the life and work of the conductor who grew up in Nazi Germany as Polish-German war child. After his studies and first employments, he worked as principal conductor in Freiburg, Dortmund and Cologne, Paris, Monte Carlo and Dresden. Today he is director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva and of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra which he turned into one of the leading orchestras in Germany.

For many people, Carlos Kleiber (1930–2004) is the most important conductor of the late 20th century. He was certainly the most problematic one. Having grown up with the burden of his dominant father Erich Kleiber, he struggled with his demand for perfection throughout his whole life. Being one of the most sought-after conductors, Carlos Kleiber did not accept any permanent appointment for years. His number of appearances was small and his official discography minimal, however, his charisma was legendary and he has a large number of fans. The guarantor of magic musical moments remained a mystery, though. His biographer Alexander Werner has tried to approach Kleiber, the man and artist, by finding out about the stages and stations of his life and questioning many of his contemporaries about the ‘secret of Kleiber’.

Elisabeth Furtwängler

Wilhelm Furtwängler

Über Wilhelm Furtwängler

Gespräche über Musik

168 pages – softcover 12,0 x 19,0 cm € 13.99 ISBN 978-3-254-00269-3 · ATL 6269

117 pages – hardcover 12,5 x 19,0 cm € 12.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0270-0 · ED 8140

This book first talks about Furtwängler, the composer and then presents two articles dedecated to Furtwängler, the conductor who had been celebrated in Germany and all over the world, but later became politically controversial and consequently was attacked many times. Elisabeth Furtwängler shows the great significance the work of Ludwig van Beethoven in particular, yet also the operas of Richard Wagner had in the life of her husband. The topicality of Wilhelm Furtwängler’s disc recordings whose development and production are described in the battle with technology, attests to his brilliance in interpretation still today. The result is a very lively, yet also very personal picture of the composer, conductor and person Wilhelm Furtwängler.

These conversations about music took place between Wilhelm Furtwängler and Walter Abendroth in 1937. They always deal with a certain topic, such as with the question of different possibilities of interpretation, with the interaction between artist and audience, with the relationship between orchestra and conductor, with classical and modern, tonal and atonal music. Wilhelm Furtwängler voices his opinion in a lively and spirited manner, always being aware of his artistic mission and never losing his sense of clarity and logic in the music. Walter Abendroth writes: ‘The extent to which conscious intellectual work for its part is rooted in the immediate experience of the work of art and is induced only from there to feel this and follow that will certainly be of particular appeal to the readers of these conversations.’

All his life, the artistic work of the composer and conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler had been accompanied by the effort to account for it in theory too. This is substantiated by numerous documents. These essays and lectures cover a large period from 1918 to 1954. In these works, Furtwängler deals with basic questions, such as the faithfulness to the original, programme planning, artistic responsibility, modern music, and develops his thoughts on Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Wagner, Hindemith, Stravinsky, and other composers.

Being the result of lectures held by the author in America, this book keeps the promise made in the title: to show the composer in his world, portray him in his workshop and describe the disputes he has to overcome with himself, with the idea, the ‘material’, the fashion, the audience. Hindemith examines the conditions under which it is possible for an artist to do creative work. A new music theory is emerging, developing out of elementary components in a generally comprehensible and clear way while discussing in particular the technical side of composing. In this juxtaposition of creative artist and environment, the severe and critical statements on prevailing conditions result from the high sense of responsibility which, in Hindemith’s opinion, has to define the path of the musician.

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra A biography

Der erfolgreichste Komponist der UfA-Zeit erinnert sich

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has not only seen and carried its share of the eventful history of its home town. Being one of the world’s most important concert orchestras, it has, in addition, become an excellent ambassador of culture. Herbert Haffner tells the story of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra – from its formation in 1882 out of the Bilsesche Kapelle (Bilse’s Band) via the period of inflation, two World Wars, the Berlin Airlift and the German reunification until the present day. Haffner does not conceal economic and personal crises, showing that the development of the orchestra mirrors the social and political circumstances of the time. The history of the Philharmonic Orchestra is marked, almost as strongly, by the continuous reorientation towards its principal conductors, from Hans von Bülow via Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado to Sir Simon Rattle. This is not just a book on music, but also an entertaining account of the cultural history of Germany and of the ever-changing city of Berlin!

‘You don’t know me, but you have heard a lot of me…’ This is how Werner Richard Heymann often introduced himself. The composer of still unforgotten sound-film hits like Liebling, mein Herz lässt dich grüßen or Ein Freund, ein guter Freund was also an astonishingly accurate and humorous observer. In his memoirs, he honours the memory of numerous personalities from 20th-century literary, film and music history. Hubert Ortkemper has succeeded in making the taperecorded memoirs of the most important UFA composer into something entertaining and historically fascinating. The (auto-)biography about the fate of a German Jew which leads the reader from the end of the Weimar Republic via Hollywood back to post-war Germany is now available in an expanded edition.

Every summer for five weeks, the Eastern Franconian town of Bayreuth turns into the metropolis of festival music. Music lovers from all over the world pilgrimage to the Green Hill to enjoy performances of the works of Richard Wagner. But a visitor hardly thinks about the huge amount of time and effort involved. The highly praised ‘Bayreuth Workshop’ has always been a real workshop – including a carpenter, locksmith, dyer and festival smith. For Katharina Wagner, the composer’s great-granddaughter, this magic world was the playground of her childhood. Today, the ‘artistic cooperative’ forms the basis of her own productions. In this illustrated book, she and the photographer Enrico Nawrath take the opera lover on a journey behind the scenes of the festival theatre.

With the production of the ‘Ring’ by Tankred Dorst last year, the ‘Ring’ productions looked back on a history of 130 years. 14 productions by 12 directors (the brothers Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner staged two productions each) are proof of the inexhaustability of Richard Wagner’s opera tetralogy. Again and again, great opera directors (after the Wagner family itself) have taken on the colossal challenge of a production: from Patrice Chéreau and Peter Hall to Harry Kupfer and Jürgen Flimm. Unlike anywhere else in the world, Bayreuth is the place to study the context of its history and theatre aesthetics. Hence, a look into the history of the ‘Ring’ in Bayreuth is a look not only into the unique chronicle of the performance history of Richard Wagner’s greatest masterpiece but also into the history of the Bayreuth Festival, thus making this illustrated volume a unique document of opera history and a must-have for every Wagner fan.

What music it must be, that it was always played when Henry Maske entered the boxing ring, music played at Michael Jackson’s stage shows, music still used for charity events and commercials? Understood and tolerated as a work of coded subversive character at the time of creation, misunderstood and met with hostility as musical evidence of the composer’s concurring beliefs seventy years later – nothing can prove the topicality of this seemingly ahistorical piece better than the unique phenomenon of its history of reception. Although the Latin texts make it difficult to understand Carmina Burana, they are among the most frequently played works in the world of music. Taking account of documentation by the composer, this book traces the genesis and reception of the work and discusses the growing popularity of Carmina Burana.

The authors of the Orff Method and their closest coworkers describe the basis of what has become an integral, no longer questioned, part of elementary music and dance education today. The selected texts add the necessary theory to practical experiences, explaining and substantiating them.

Everyone can listen to music, of course, but the enjoyment of it can be greatly enhanced – no matter what music one likes to listen to. Das MusikHörBuch shows you how to do that, explaining in an easily understandable language: the most refined methods to select the appropriate music for any occasion the best strategy to develop your own musical preferences the most important tricks to enhance the pleasure of listening to music the most frequent mistakes occurring in listening to music and how to avoid them Whether on musical journeys, time travels and musictasting events, whether listening with the imaginary stethoscope or discovering the ‘anatomy’ of a music piece – the reader is granted new and unexpected insights into the cosmos of music and thus into his or her very own world of listening.

20th-century music is characterized by a confusing multitude of trends and movements. Several movements often coexist at the same time, reflecting intellectual tendencies, social and political changes and responses thereto. With this book, the renowned musicologist and author Constantin Floros provides a survey of the different styles and tendencies of New Music. He presents the most important composers, from Schoenberg to Rihm, in a series of essays, which are accessible to both the amateur and the professional alike. And since, to him, biography and music are inseparable, this publication takes into account both musical aspects and contemporary, psychological and sociological contexts. Constantin Floros, born in Saloniki in 1930, studied musicology, art history, philosophy and psychology in Vienna. Ph.D. in 1955, habilitation in 1961, professor of musicology at the University of Hamburg from 1967–95, focussing on music of the Middle Ages and the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Numerous publications, particularly on Mozart, Bruckner, Mahler, Brahms, and Alban Berg and Ligeti.

The brothers Ernst Ströer (born in 1963) and Hans P. Ströer (born in 1956) have been in the music business for more than 25 years – as composers, arrangers, music producers and musicians. They became known by their collaborations with Volker Kriegel, Klaus Doldinger, Udo Lindenberg and Heinrich Breloer, among others. Das MusikHörBuch is their first joint book project.

176 pages with 2 CDs – softcover 17,0 x 24,0 cm € 29.99 ISBN 978-3-7957-0759-0 · ED 21063

A book which is an eye- and ear-opener with regard to musical contexts unknown to many music lovers. Stefan Schaub shows an easy way of how even complex musical works become accessible step by step and without any academic efforts. Major symphonies from Haydn to Shostakovitch are described and analysed in a clear and comprehensible way, based on the example of the sonata form. Thus, the music can be actively experienced through more conscious perception, and the knowledge of structures and contexts increases the pleasure of listening. Being rather an exercise book than a book for reading, this book, including sound examples on two CDs, provides many ideas and suggestions, thereby awakening the reader’s delight in details.

For the first time since Hugo Riemann, a book is presented that is based on a completely new rhythm theory: the ‘theory of components’. Petersen’s theses and analyses make it possible to describe and understand the rhythmic structure of music better than before. Whereas rhythm has been described simply as an interplay of longs and shorts with accents and metres up to now, Petersen shows that there are secondary rhythms apart from the basic rhythms which are not notated because they depend on tonal properties and tonal figures. These ‘rhythms of components’ are effective as a rhythmic fabric and at the same time gravity forming; they can even change metre and time.

Up to now, the knowledge of fundamental terms and contexts has been a necessary condition in order to understand and enjoy music. Renner’s introduction to music theory presented here in a completely revised new edition has proven to be an effective means to impart such basic knowledge for decades. Questions of acoustics, notation, harmony, counterpoint and musical form, musical instruments as well as of time, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, melody and ornaments are dealt with in an easily understandable manner. This reliable, clearly arranged textbook is now available again for every music lover and everybody interested in music.

This is the first time that it has been tried to put the history of music education, seen from a perspective relating to cultural history as well as to the history of ideas, into a time frame of more than 3,000 years. This is associated with the claim to paint a picture which does not begin around 800 or not even before 1800, as has been the case up to now. Musical ‘world views’ have influenced entire nations, periods of history and cultural areas, affecting even their political structure: Music has ‘educated’ in the original sense of the word. The reader is introduced to 40 stages in our cultural and educational history: from antiquity to the present time. Awarded with the Deutscher Musikeditionspreis 2006.

From The Black Crook and the Ziegfeld Follies via George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim to The Producers; from the American Operetta to the Concept Musical, this handbook offers an insight into all the different types and forms. In addition to the synopses, the entries contain information about the first nights, ensemble, voice categories, orchestration, detailed commentaries in addition to numerous illustrations, references to further readings and multimedia. A must-have for all musical lovers!

‘Handbuch der populären Musik’ is a standard work which is aimed at music lovers and experts alike. In addition, it tries to both satisfy the listeners’ and fans’ need for information and provide performing musicians, music editors or music teachers and not least students of corresponding fields of study with a compendium for consultation purposes. Containing more than 1,000 entries, this book examines the forms as well as the historical, cultural and economic background of popular music, including the whole range from pop, hip-hop and electronic dance music via rock, jazz, blues, folk and world music to chanson, musical, wind music and folk song. The book deals with current and historical developments, techniques, instruments, the various aspects of practical music-making and the basics of music production. The fully revised new version of this handbook takes into account not only the effects of the digital revolution on the production and circulation of music, from on-line services to mobile music, but, by including company and label portraits, the defining role of music history in past and present times as well.

Do you also have the feeling that your choir could be a lot more spirited? That your singers cling to the notes and do not listen to each other enough? And that the audience actually should no longer bear to remain seated? If so, this comprehensive book on choral conducting for pop, jazz and gospel music contains the answers to these questions: Based on his wealth of experience in choral conducting, Martin Carbow discusses central issues such as rehearsing methods, choir work without notes, ear training and, above all, the groove in the choir. In addition to explaining technical terms, dealing with rhythmical problems and presenting exercises, he eventually also reveals his groove secrets. Christoph Schönherr explores the issue of vocal improvisation in choirs, the relationship of word and sound as well as the importance of conducting and the role of the choir director in the jazz and pop choir, among others. This book also provides information on further training courses for choir directors (and choirs), auditions, concerts, voice and voice training in popular music, accompaniment, arrangements, and many other aspects.

tifically supported arguments for all choir conductors as to why people should sing in a choir and how self-enriching singing in a choir can be. It is a guide to sensible concert planning and organization as well as successful choir management. It deals with all central artistic issues in great detail, from proper conducting via effective rehearsing methods to intense musical interpretation, productive, yet pleasant voice training, the dramatic composition of a successful choir rehearsal and the preparation of choral pieces with instrumental accompaniment. Hans-Günther Bastian has been professor of music education and systematic musicology at the universities of Bonn, Paderborn and Frankfurt/Main since 1980. He gave lectures at choir directors’ conferences of the Deutscher Sängerbund and was a jury member at several national choir competitions. Wilfried Fischer has been professor of music education with primary focus on the artistic practice of music lessons including choral conducting at the Flensburg Pädagogische Hochschule as well as at the universities of Cologne and Paderborn since 1972.

Paul Nitsche’s ‘Pflege der Kinder- und Jugendstimme’, published in two volumes in 1952/1954, has been known to directors of children’s choirs and teachers of singing for a long time. Now this standard work is available as a revised new edition in a new design and layout, consisting of the chapters ‘Theoretischer Teil’ [Theoretical Part] and ‘Stimmbildungen am Lied’ [Voice Training in Song]. While the first part deals with topics such as ‘autonomy of the child’s voice’, ‘breaking of the voice’, ‘breathing’, ‘sound generation’, ‘resonant chambers’ and ‘hummer’, the second part contains a lot of exercises for the practical work with children from primary school age to the breaking of the voice. ‘Exercises in song’, ‘Song vocalises’ and ‘Syllables for practising in shouting, singing and playing’ are just a few examples from the varied material provided for voice training. It is the author’s aim to exploit the possibilities of the voice in song without the song becoming a stereotyped and mechanically repeated voice training exercise. What is essential is that the subject matter is ‘wrapped up’ in the singing or playing activities in such a way that the children do not lose their joy and pleasure in singing.

What do they all have in common – the universal scholar Hildegard von Bingen, the pianist Clara Schumann, the Nobel Prize winner Albert Einstein, the violinist of the century Yehudi Menuhin, the German ex-chancellor Helmut Schmidt, and the actress Katja Riemann? They all have experienced how active music-making can enhance the quality of life – Isolated examples? No! A six-year long-term study with children aged between six and twelve years scientifically substantiates: Music-making children and young people - improve their social behaviour - enhance their IQ - get good grades at school - compensate for their lack of concentration, etc. In the present paperback, Professor Hans Günther Bastian, head of the research project, summarizes major results of the 700-page scientific study Musik(erziehung) und ihre Wirkung and provides convincing arguments in favour of the demand for music education to take up a central position at general-education schools. This book helps parents, teachers, music teachers, the young people themselves and politicians on a federal and länder level to see the potential that exists in music and music education.

‘What do I do when I can’t produce the sound I would like?’ The book ‘Grundlagen der Kontrabass-Technik’ by Michael B. Wolf provides detailed answers to such questions. With the help of a detailed programme, the pupil will quickly learn the technical elements which are indispensable for artistic expression. Topics such as bowing technique, change of position, vibrato, right-left coordination, intonation or performance preparation are covered, taking into account the technical and intellectual aspects of generating the perfect sound. Although many techniques of this method represent a radical breach of tradition, they can be easily used for all double-bass methods and playing techniques.

There is no violin method that is suitable for all pupils. But there is a large number of important educational traditions which can inspire the pupil’s personal artistic and technical development. Jeanne Christée set out to search for evidence: from Geminiani’s The Art of Playing the Violin, published in 1751, to Ricci on Glissando from 2007. The essential points of these different violin methods are complemented by insights into her own teaching practice. In addition, she talks with renowned fellow educationalists like Hilary Hahn and Vadim Repin about the significance of the historical methods for one’s personal violin technique. The result of her excursions is a comparative guide through the vast number of traditions which comments on and sums up the respective characteristics, thus imparting vital information on performance practice and music aesthetics.

Michael Barry Wolf, born in 1954 in the US, is professor of double bass at the Berlin Universität der Künste. He studied music at the California State University and was member of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. His radio and disc recordings as well as numerous concert activities and master classes at home and abroad have always received great critical acclaim.

Playing an instrument requires imagination, free association, individuality, eagerness to experiment. However, the prerequisites for such artistic liberties are certain physical and physiological facts which can be described very clearly. Their knowledge can open up new areas of creative freedom. In his book, published in 1972 for the first time, Gerhard Mantel tries to explain concepts of cello teaching which are classed between freedom and arbitrariness. His surprising results have meanwhile become established in general string instrument lessons to a large extent.

Practising – or practise practising? Gerhard Mantel finds new, sometimes even unorthodox answers to the old question of how to practise. In this book the author describes the varied mental, psychological and physical aspects of the adventure of ‘practising’, while trying at the same time, in a widely diversified manner, to make individual instrumental problems accessible and thus available to the spontaneous artistic need of expression. In a new chapter of the revised and expanded edition, the author deals with the topic of ‘linking’: muscular or mental linking of two notes, spatial linking on the fingerboard, and linking inside the body.

‘How can I play cleaner – even cleaner?’ This question bothers every critical string instrument player during his/her daily practice. According to a survey, more than 70 per cent of the actual practising time and attention of a string instrument player is spent on intonation. In this book, Gerhard Mantel provides basic information on the phenomenon of intonation, presenting practical methods which go far beyond a simple, spontaneous determination of ‘too high – too low’. His approaches to a solution, some of them quite unconventional, enable every sting instrument player to find his/her individual way to the best possible intonation and eliminate seemingly insoluble problems in the ensemble playing with other string instrument, wind instrument or piano players. The author attaches particular importance to dealing with intonation playfully and use it specifically for the artistic expression.

In this book, Gerhard Mantel looks into the question which means and tools a performer should have in order to make a musical text into the intellectual and emotional experience intended by the composer. As is generally known, the ‘actual music’ does not exist in the printed work. But which are the aesthetic and creative criteria for how the performer can, or has to, treat the musical text in order to interpret it and explain it to the listener? The musical imagination, the inner anticipation of the musical effect, is a vital condition for an interpretation. In addition, it is important to know, however, whereupon this effect is based and how it can be achieved. Based on decades of concert and teaching experience, the author leads the reader to a unity of knowledge, planning, intuition and emotion and thus to an ‘interpretation technique’ which is indispensable to an inspired interpretation and can be achieved by every musician in his/her very personal form.

The success of an instrumentalist depends on the quality of his practising and not least on the concrete knowledge of how to practise efficiently. The present collection of ‘recipes’ shall help to optimize and accelerate the learning process. The book describes techniques which are often new, yet well-tried in practising, concerts and teaching and are suitable for individual problems. This is about putting the practising behaviour into solid terms which are so clear that they are really available at any time.

By making music, people increase their means of expression. They broaden their mind and experience happiness. Learning how to make music happens in individual ways and thus has to be taught individually. The present book presents instrumental and singing teachers a comprehensive method that provides them with a wide repertoire of methodological possibilities, trains their observation skills and reflective faculty and enhance their imagination. Thus, teachers and learners can find their own ways towards fulfilling and sophisticated music-making. Ulrich Mahlert has been professor of music education at the Berlin Universität der Künste since 1984. He is cofounder and co-editor of the magazine Üben & Musizieren (Schott Music). It is easier than you think! Drawing from many years of practical experience, Michael Dickreiter shows how to decipher the complex image of a score very easily. First, he explains the notation, even in its historical development. Starting with following an individual part, the reader is acquainted with different methods of score-reading step by step. In an extensive chapter with practising examples, excerpts from popular scores have been prepared in such a way that these methods can be understood even visually. As a consequence, this volume is an easyto-understand manual for concert-goers and music listeners as well as a useful aid for pupils and students.

When Julius Hey published his three-part work ‘Deutscher Gesangsunterricht’ [German Singing Lessons] around 1900, he had no way of knowing that this textbook was to start an unprecedented triumphant progress. Originally, Hey had developed his method only for his pupils and as a mere singing manual. It was only the responsibility for improving the often wrong pronunciation of actors and singers that prompted him to add a ‘speech part’ to his main work. The fact that especially this part, entitled ‘Der kleine Hey’ [The Little Hey], became and has remained – with the largest number of copies – the standard work for speech training until today proves the validity of this method. Julius Hey’s textbook on the basics of the ‘art of speaking’ is the fundamental textbook for the speech training of actors, speakers and singers as well as of all other professions connected with the spoken word, and not least a valuable aid for school lessons and private studies. Do we breathe correctly? Do we breathe too high – meaning one-sided and insufficient chest breathing or misguided abdominal breathing – due to everyday stress or an incorrect teaching method? Breathing is an autonomous function, yet can also be influenced consciously and deliberately. ‘Die Atemschule’ enables everybody to recognize one’s individual faults of breathing and find out what has to be done to achieve a mental and physical balance and a higher performance capacity through correct diaphragmatic breathing, i.e. breathing in the middle. The book provides singers, wind instrument players, speakers and people with respiratory diseases with an exercise programme in order to change the incorrect breathing to correct breathing, posture and support. Revised and expanded 4th edition.

Tried and tested in practice, this textbook is aimed at all those dealing with the training of one’s own voice or of the voices of other persons on an elementary level – be it in the field of education, music, acting or therapy. Anneliese Riesch sees tone and sound as a phenomenon which needs to be examined mainly intellectually. Written in an easily understood language, the chapters on breathing, articulation, tonal range, interpretation and register are complemented by numerous illustrations. The work is completed by exercises with music and text examples. This textbook for the cultivation of the speaking and singing voice was revised on the basis of unpublished notes left by the author and is now available in a new updated version.

This book deals with three fields that are of interest to both singers and lovers of singing: the fascinating historical development from the Greek songs accompanied by aulos or kithara via the richly ornamented Gregorian chant to the heyday of the bel canto in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the demands of new music; the anatomical and physiological foundations of voice production, explained by a number of exact photographic and graphic examples; the technical foundations of singing in five main chapters which are worked on according to the disposition and aptitude of the students: posture, breathing function, intonation – function of the language, approaches to and training of the pronunciation – equalizing the voice, messa di voce, legato – range, volume, velocity and virtuosity – dramatic expression and interpretation.

What does head resonance mean? What is the relation between timbre and tone colour? What are the reasons for lacking carrying power and vigour of the voice? Answers to these and numerous other questions concerning voice training are given by Paul Lohmann in his guide that became a standard work long ago. The fact that he is never categorical but always presents various possibilities of how to eliminate faults is Lohmann’s strong point. His book therefore is perfect not only for budding and trained singers, but also for singing teachers.

Combining theory with practice, this book offers a theory of composition which is ground-breaking, far beyond the topic of ‘film’. Since 1980, composing has generally meant more than the mere logical development with the traditional materials space, time and sound: Music rather is about associative composing, the integration of entertaining, serious, world and jazz music, even with the aid of the latest studio technology. The use of these components for the development of film music is described by the author in his book, providing practical tips, such as concerning questions of music and film editing, synchronization of images and music, mixing, sound sampling as well as everyday problems such as studio rent and fees.

The aim of the author is to awaken delight in expression, pleasure in moving and joy of playing and make both intelligent interpretation and attentive listening deducing the meaning the basis of music-making. No matter whether Baroque music, music of the Viennese Classicism or Schoenberg’s ‘Little Piano Pieces’ – instrumental lessons shall always be music lessons as well.

For a long time, left-handedness has been regarded as ‘deviation from the norm’, and musical instruments usually are designed for right-handers even today. But the question arises whether or not the handedness, i.e. the preference for using the left or right hand for certain tasks, also plays a role with such complex activities as music-making. The changed playing situation with instruments for lefthanders touches on a topic that has to a large extent remained undiscovered and tabooed up to now. After a look at history, the book describes the current state of dealing with left-handedness in music-making – including all consequences not only for the common order of musicmaking but especially for the capability and health of the performing musicians. The author, a cellist and ‘right-hand playing’ left-hander, analyzes the musical practice of left-handed ‘normal players’ and left-handed players on numerous instruments from the perspective of an orchestra musician, instrumental teacher and educationalist. The analysis is concluded with recommendations for practising, teaching tips and answers to questions of parents of left-handed children.

Qi Gong – a sort of ‘self-healing breathing exercises’ – is a method in traditional Chinese medicine. It combines breathing with gently flowing movements, stretching and concentration on various meridians (energy channels) to form a holistic health system, the fundamentals of which are easy to learn. For musicians, four aspects of this holistic method are of crucial importance: combination of breathing with musical creation, stress management and stress prevention, muscular tensions, playing technique and reduction of physical stress caused by the playing posture

The practical exercise concept presented here leads to a unity of the performer with the music and himself, to ‘Wu Wei’, the ‘doing by not doing’. The theoretical basics from traditional Chinese medicine and Western kinesiology are presented in an easily understandable way. The exercise sequences are explained by means of clear depictions. Frank Hartmann is concert guitarist and guitar teacher with many years of experience as a teacher. He is Qi Gong trainer and lecturer and holds numerous courses and workshops. Author of various articles on this topic published in specialist magazines.

In order to complement and clarify this vocabulary, specialist dictionaries and reference books have been consulted. Contemporary musical terms taken, for example, from the fields of jazz, pop and electronic music, have also been included. Roberto Braccini studied music in Florence, Italy, obtaining his diploma in piano playing at the local Luigi Cherubini Conservatoire. Apart from various activities as a professional musician, he taught courses in musical terminology in various European countries. At present, he is professor of piano methodology and piano didactics at the Lugano Music Academy (Switzerland).

There’s no way around it: all musicians have to practice their whole life long. Yet very few musicians confront this ‘necessary evil’ and give it much serious thought. One might say that practicing has not been made practicable for the practical musician... In his ‘Handbuch Üben,’ the experienced music teacher Ulrich Mahlert has brought together a number of renowned authors from the performing arts and neighboring disciplines who are more than familiar with the joys and problems of practicing. Their essays have given rise to an important book that is rich in details on a topic that is often perplexing and always timely. The concise subtitle ‘Fundamentals. Concepts. Methods.’ is programmatic, for the book seeks to convey impulses for pleasurable and fruitful practicing. In the best of cases, individually adjusted practicing can contribute to self-perception, self-criticism and personal development. The book has fulfilled its purpose if this goal is reached. One can only hope that this volume will become a standard work for everyone who practices!

Lachenmann’s central essays such as ‘Klangtypen der Neuen Musik’ (Types of Sound in New Music), ‘Die gefährdete Kommunikation’ (Endangered Communication), ‘Zum Problem des musikalisch Schönen heute’ (The Problem of Beauty in Music Today), and his essays on Mahler, Schoenberg and Nono are among the most important testimonies of autonomous musical thought in our time. In addition to Lachenmann’s major essays, this volume of writings also contains all of the composer’s work introductions as well. The reprint 2004 is essentially the result of an intensive and critical reading of the previous text by Lachenmann himself. The text was generally only slightly altered, with passages rewritten and the language occasionally lightened. Only the analysis of the Second String Quartet ‘Dance of the Blessed Spirits,’ which was very topical back in 1996, was newly conceived and substantially changed. The editor’s observations, work catalogue and discography have been revised and updated.

Countless students have learned their musical basics from ‘ABC Musik.’ After five very successful editions of the book which was first published in 1997, Wieland Ziegenrücker has thoroughly revised, updated and expanded his fundamental work. The new edition provides greater emphasis on the essential qualities of ‘ABC Musik’: a comprehensive selection of topics, well-grounded structure, visually compelling presentation, easily understandable language, practical exercises for learning control, and an index with explanations of technical terms.

Thanks to his ‘Lexikon Musiktheorie’, the knowledgeable author Thomas Kraemer fills a gap that was open for far too long. He explains all standard concepts from such typical disciplines of music theory as harmony, counterpoint and thoroughbass in a succinct and easily comprehensible manner, often exploring stylistic and historical aspects as well. The spectrum of the contents has been deliberately expanded through excursions into domains such as formal design, new compositional methods and jazz theory – where co-author Manfred Dings’ special knowledge comes in handy. Providing vivid visual enhancements are the many short music examples that provide an additional elucidation to nearly every key word.

Eine Schule für Kinder und Jugendliche – Vol. 1 Set for piano by Thomas Blomenkamp Illustrations by Dorothea Lindenberg First steps with the double bass

With his ‘Violin Case’, Michael Dartsch offers an ideal supplement to every violin method and teaching situation. Organized according to themes, it has lots and lots of material: songs and pieces for playing on open strings, for stopping the string with individual fingers, for taking the different steps in fingering, for rhythm, notation, improvisation, and exercises in poise, posture and motion. Dartsch, an experienced conservatory teacher, has developed a compelling concept that is underscored by some interesting information he provides on the violin as well as by original texts to the songs. This allows the players to sing along with the melody. The pieces are almost always in two parts, which stimulates joint music-making.

It’s not by accident that ‘Kontrabass!’ (Double Bass!) has an exclamation mark in its title, for Thomas Schlink’s method begins from scratch, i.e. it requires no practical knowledge of the instrument. The ‘Kontrabass!’ concept is so broad that all teachers can proceed from their own playing techniques and methods, and can teach them without difficulty. In Book 1, the student goes from plucked and bowed playing on open strings to the first position. In order to let the student interact with others from the very start, the book often includes an accompanying part for bass, piano or melody instrument. Of course, such a well-planned instrumental method offers more yet: work materials, exercises, suggestions – in a word, double-bass lessons are rounded off perfectly with ‘Kontrabass!’ Incidentally, the double bass was recently proclaimed the ‘instrument of the year 2010’ in Schleswig-Holstein. Schlink’s ‘Kontrabass!’ would thus be the (instrumental) method of the year.

Along with comments intended for the teacher, the ‘Violin Case’ contains a song index arranged according to specific occasions, a text for the parents and a CD with tuning notes, a selection of play-along pieces and some stylistically enriching insights into violin literature. The ‘Violin Case’ is thus wonderfully suited for general teaching purposes as an alternative to a violin method.

Be a pro at the drums! ‘Drumroad 1’ marks the beginning of Breitkopf’s percussion instruction series. In the first book of Ralf Kleinehanding’s method, the comprehensive acquisition of the basic techniques is put in the forefront. Parallel to working on grooves, the student will also learn important fillins. The enclosed fill-in book offers a flexible array of uses and combinations, and contains many additional pieces for the toms. Accompanying patterns for chordal instruments (mallets, piano) round off the concept. This wide-ranging book provides essential groundwork for the mastery of percussion instruments. Ideal for traditional instruction, ‘Drumroad 1’ will also whet the student’s appetite for more complex grooves and techniques in Volume 2 – for we can assure you that Kleinehanding will be back on the „Drumroad“ as soon as possible!

The method that makes playing the recorder child’s play! Volume 1 of ‘BlockflötenSpiel’ offers the kind of variety teachers have long hoped to find for their little pupils (beginning at about age 6). Technical exercises are incorporated into little pieces from many different styles and eras. There are also quizzes, hints for improvisations, songs, suggestions for playing with other instruments, piano accompaniments, information on the recorder and its history – and, of course, tips for parents and notes for teachers.

Since his sensational debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in February 2006 Jonas Kaufmann has ranked among the top stars of the opera scene. The international press hailed him as ‘the new king of tenors’, insiders celebrate him as the most important German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich. Whether New York, London, Paris or Milan: The world’s leading opera houses scramble to get him: He sings fantastic, is very good-looking, intelligent, has a gift for languages and is an excellent actor. In July 2010 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival, playing the title role in Hans Neuenfels’ new production of Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ brilliantly. Despite his success, the real Bavarian boy has remained refreshingly natural and down-to-earth. In his interview with the music journalist Thomas Voigt he talks at length about the bright and dark sides of his profession for the first time.

‘You absolutely have to hear him play, the boy plays like the devil!’ said composer Aribert Reimann in 1987 to David Levine, professor of piano at the Düsseldorf Musikhochschule, who then took 17-year-old Fazil Say under his wing at once. Today, 25 years and thousands of concerts later, the performances of the exceptional Turkish pianist electrifies audiences all over the world, there hardly being a day the successful composer and jazz musician is not on stage. But being a bridge-builder between Orient and Occident, Fazil Say does not content himself with being an artist but also joins in explosive social debates, no matter whether they take place in his German or Turkish home country or whether they concern Muslim parallel societies or the political issue of ‘arabesque pop’. In his portrait, the renowned music author Jürgen Otten tries to get to the bottom of the phenomenon Fazil Say in a very perceptive manner: in intensive talks with Say, his family and his companions and fellow musicians.

‘The most compact, sensible, critical non-fiction book on the opera published in a long time.’ Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung ‘Voigt as well as Kaufmann have much to say about voices as such, about the mechanism of the business, about the creation of art and career development.’ Tages-Anzeiger

Egyptian family secrets revealed

The churches and their legends

- Are Nefertiti and Akhnaton the parents of Tutankhamun? - Mystery of the most famous pharaoh solved thanks to DNA analysis - New scientific findings about the world’s most beautiful queen

- Guide to famous cathedrals and important churches in the capital of Tuscany - The most beautiful churches of Florence from Santa Maria del Fiore to Santo Spirito - With numerous colour photos, city map, opening hours and tips

Who were the parents of Tutankhamun? And who was Nefertiti? Since the DNA analysis of the Amarna mummies in 2010, researchers have come a big step closer to solving the mystery of Tutankhamun’s family background. The analysis has proven that Akhnaton can be identified as Tutankhamun’s father and that Nefertiti was no foreign princess. These findings have far-reaching consequences for the interpretation of the history of Egypt portrayed by the author in this book. The result is a vivid picture of the time of Amarna and of the decline and fall of the two rulers.

‘Italy is the garden of Europe. Tuscany is the garden of Italy. Florence is the flower of Tuscany.’ Following this saying, André Horstmann has written a guide that shows the best routes through the whole of Florence to about 55 imposing churches and cathedrals, all the while telling fascinating stories not only about the buildings, their architects and clients, but also about saints, patron saints and Florentine families. André Horstmann, born in 1958, translator, interpreter, reviewer and freelance author, studied French and Italian at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Horstmann is cofounder of the Berlin Renaissance Society and renowned expert on Florence.

Michael E. Habicht, born in 1974, studied classical archaeology, Egyptology and prehistoric archaeology at the universities of Zurich and Basel. He has specialized in the New Kingdom of Egypt, the Royal Tombs and the books of the underworld as well as on the time of Akhnaton, Nefertiti and Tutankhamun.
