Residential Trips

Aberdyfi As part of our Year 7 curriculum, our students are expected to partake in this outward Bound course. During the course, students are expected to try new things and with the help of Outward Bounds specialist instructors find that they can do lots more than expected. The jetty jump is one of the highlights of the week along with the high ropes course. The trip is fully subsidised by the Academy although students are encouraged to raise funds towards the cost through the ‘£1Challenge’.

Ullswater As a follow up to the Aberdyfi trip for students who wish to further their experience of the outdoors. This trip, based in the Lake District, designed and lead by the Outward Bound Trust, allows Year 8 students to further develop the skills gained and challenge themselves to put themselves further. We do receive a bursary towards the cost from the Outward Bound Trust but we require a parental contribution in the range of £200 - £300.

Ski Trip Open to students of all ages this trip to Courmayeur in Italy allows students to enjoy the thrill of skiing or snowboarding. The trip is open to students of any ability and experience. Whilst in the ski resort students receive tuition from qualified instructors who will ensure that students attempt only runs they are capable of. The trip costs in the range of £650 - £750.

Ocean Spirit A chance to crew an ocean going yacht as it sails around the North of Scotland. This is a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing in spectacular scenery. The boat owned by Gordonstoun School is captained by an experienced sailor but the students are expected, under his guidance, to navigate, set the sails, take a turn in the galley and at the wheel. The trip is open to students in Years 10 to 12 and is subsidised by the Academy but there is a requirement for a parental contribution in the range of £400 - £450.

The tour is based in Rotterdam using the facilities and coaching staff of Feyenoord Football Club. As well as training sessions there will be the opportunity to play matches against international opposition and a tour of the Feyenoord stadium which has staged 10 European finals. The tour is open to year 7 and 8 students. The trip costs in the range of £550-£600 all of which is payable by parents.

Jerusalem This trip is part of our link with the Anglican International School Jerusalem. Students will travel to Jerusalem, one of the holiest places in three of the world’s great religions. Once in Jerusalem students, as well as visiting the many historic sites, will work with and build friendships with students from our partner school. This trip costs in the range of £600 - £650 and is open to students from Year 8 upwards.

Round Square As part of our membership of Round Square, a worldwide organisation of schools that share a common ethos, there will be during the year, a number of opportunities to visit partner schools. The visits will be centred on the Round Square Ideals; Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. The costs for each trip will vary depending on the location and the nature of the trip, but usually the major cost will be transport costs as accommodation is often at the boarding facilities of the partner schools.

Barcelona Visit Financial Assistance As a Business Studies and Economic destination, Barcelona has much to offer visiting students. We will enjoy a guided tour of a multi-national company or go behind the scenes at Mango. Alternatively we can visit local producers to compare their methods and successes. Reasons to visit: Anis del Mono Distillery - The distillery is in the same location as the San Miguel Glassworks visit so it’s an ideal combination. Visits can take place in English. The focus of the visit is on the history of company and the production related local history. It also looks at the comparison of production methods used 100 years ago and those currently used. FC Barcelona Museum - Trophies, documents, photographs and audiovisual shows trace the

history of one of the greatest clubs in the world. You can view the stadium from the grandstand. The visit takes 1.5-2 hours. Guided tours in English are also available. Port of Barcelona - Guided tour around Spain’s leading port including an audiovisual explanation and a visit around the port in a traditional sailing boat. Wine and beverage producers - Estrella Damm, Bodegas Torres, Cordorniu, Freixenet, Anis del Mono Discover more about a range of wine and beverage producers in and around Barcelona including behind the scenes tours, company presentations and question and answer sessions. Saving Club We operate a savings club where parents can make regular payments. We hold this money in a separate bank account from the Academy’s normal account. Parents can fully track the money they have paid in and instruct us how they wish that money to be used. If you wish to use this facility a bank mandate is available on the website. Endowment Trust The Academy has an endowment fund set up by our sponsors. The aim of the trust is to assist students who, because of financial reasons, would not be able to access all aspects of the wider curriculum. Students wishing to make an application should, in the first instance, talk to their school leader.
